Annual Report 2011-2012 - Flathead Valley Community College
YOUR COLLEGE 2012 Annual Report YOUR COMMUNITY On the Cover The Broussard family (on the cover) gave Flathead Valley Community College $4 million, the largest gift ever given to the college, to build a nursing and health science center as a tribute to the late Rebecca Chaney Broussard, a former nurse and philanthropist. To fund the completion of the building, the Broussard family challenged the community to contribute the remaining $1 million. Thanks to our community, the Flathead Valley Community College Foundation celebrated a milestone this year as it raised $1,364,837, surpassing its $1 million goal by 36 percent.. COMMUNITY On May 22, members of the campus and area communities gathered to watch the Broussard family and FVCC dignitaries, along with college health care and health science faculty and students, break ground on the college’s first privatelyfunded building. The center will house classes and labs for FVCC nursing programs, as well as other health sciences programs, and will include a student health clinic to provide affordable basic health care services to FVCC students. First graduating class of FVCC’s Associate of Science in Nursing program Rebecca Chaney Broussard Center for Nursing and Health Science Dear Friends, We have many reasons to be proud. During a time when the economic recession has impacted our region significantly, the people of Northwest Montana have sought new ways to support themselves and their families. The communities of Northwest Montana are built on individuals who can meet any challenge and rise above any circumstance. In addition, our communities are supported many individuals who are passionate about giving their time, energies and resources to help those in need better their futures. As president during the past 11 years, I have seen our college double in size and serve record numbers of students who have all come to FVCC with the common goal of investing in their futures and in the futures of our local, state and national economies. I also have seen the benefit of the partnerships and generosity from those who truly care about impacting our students and their success. “It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a community to build a college.” I have been fortunate to work with other community colleges on the national and international levels. And while other colleges may have more students, more resources and more recognition, I can tell you that no other community college has the community support and partnerships that we have here at FVCC. Thanks to you, FVCC has become an exceptional college, and our many achievements have happened because of your support and because of your confidence in our students. You have made a difference in the lives of our students and their futures, and for that, we are forever grateful. With gratitude, Jane A. Karas, Ph.D. President p1 National Impact When Montana’s senior U.S. Senator Max Baucus was appointed to serve on a bipartisan 12-member Joint Select Committee charged with reaching a deal on national deficit reduction, he reached out to FVCC students and asked them to submit their ideas. FVCC Scholars Program students Ursula DeStefano, Tracy Lost-Bear, Lisa Seelye and Heather Fraley answered his call by coming together to brainstorm ideas, volunteering nearly eight hours of their time for this special project without receiving extra credit. Under the guidance of The Scholars Program Director Ivan Lorentzen; Outreach Coordinator, Career Pathways and Running Start Jeremy Fritz; and Executive Director, Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning Brad Eldredge, Ph.D., the students reviewed Congressional Budget Office reports on the deficit, read various deficit reduction proposals and discussed and developed their own ideas for deficit reduction solutions. Their ideas, discussions and recommendations on various topics, such as health care, taxes, Social Security and defense spending, that reached consensus were summarized into a six-page report that was presented to Senator Baucus. COMMUNITY p2 “The experience was a very unique opportunity. I hope the project will provide a spark to start something revolutionary in our national government. Maybe someone will take an interest in one of our ideas, or maybe our ideas will have an influence in some way. In the end, it all comes down to FVCC students having a real impact on our national government.” Lisa Seelye FVCC Scholars Program Student With the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics projection that the registered nursing workforce will be the top occupation in terms of job growth through 2020, FVCC expanded its nursing curriculum this year by launching an Associate of Science degree in Nursing. The two-year program prepares students to take the national certification examination for registered nurses and joins the college’s Certified Nurse’s Aide training and Practical Nursing program. In Flathead and Lincoln counties alone, the number of available registered nursing jobs is projected to grow by 24 percent, with 375 jobs opening in the next 10 years. This is double the growth projected elsewhere in the state of Montana. “As our population continues to age, the need for registered nurses continues to rise. Having this program at the college will prepare our community for good-paying jobs in the booming health care industry while providing top quality health care to patients across the region.” Myrna Ridenour Director, FVCC Nursing Program COMMUNITY Preparing for the Future p3 Honorable Service FVCC’s leadership in community service received national recognition this year as it was named to the 2011 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. This past year, 429 FVCC students provided more than 7,700 volunteer community service hours, and 83 Campus Corps members provided 42,000 hours of service through their clinical hours, internships, externships, and student teaching. According to Janaya Okerlund, service learning supervisor and Campus Corps coordinator, volunteering plays a vital role in building confidence in students while teaching them key skills that will help them succeed throughout their lives. COMMUNITY p4 “Elementary students improve their reading and math skills, residents and visitors are assisted through emergency services, low income families receive new homes, troubled teens are mentored, elderly residents gain new friends, local children are provided warm meals, abandoned pets are cared for, less fortunate residents receive the resources they need to succeed...this list goes on and on. I see how community service impacts our students, and I see them grow from their experiences. The students never realized how much help is needed in our community until they got involved. They are empowered by their experiences. It’s meaningful to them to make a difference.” Janaya Okerlund Service Learning Supervisor and Campus Corps Coordinator Symone Atondo has always had a passion for cooking and loved to apply her passion to large groups at her church. The single mother of three’s future took a turn when a pastor asked her what she was going to with her skills. Little did she know that his simple question would inspire her to enroll in The Culinary Institute of Montana at FVCC and later put her on a mission to help others. In the spring, she donated an in-home fine dining experience for the Flathead Food Bank Soup and Supper Auction Benefit. To help her, she recruited a couple of her fellow classmates to join her in preparing and serving the meal. She also entered a recipe contest through the Samaritan House homeless shelter in Kalispell. Her recipe, “Red Velvet Cake with a Twist,” was inspired by the Waldorf-Astoria red velvet cake recipe she learned in school. She took the original recipe, made a few tweaks, including removing all gluten, and created a dessert she thinks “tastes better than the original.” So did the judges. Symone placed first in the dessert category, and her recipe was published in the Samaritan House’s “Come To Our Table: The Community Cookbook of Sharing and Caring” which raises funds for the organization and awareness of homelessness. Symone’s donation of one of her finished cakes to the Samaritan House Cowboy Up Auction raised an additional $400 for the organization. “I’m happy I’ve finally found my way to give back. I am trying to instill in my children the value of helping others. After all, what better thing in life is there than helping other people? That’s why we’re here.” Symone Atondo Student, The Culinary Institute of Montana at FVCC COMMUNITY Cake with a Cause p5 Pink Gloves FVCC graphic design student Amanda Haynes had recently lost a close friend to a long battle with cancer when the FVCC Nursing Department began looking for someone to produce the college’s very own Pink Glove Dance video in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness and to bring hope and smiles to those impacted by the disease. When Amanda learned of the opportunity, she jumped all over it. With the help of the college’s Institutional Advancement Office, Amanda spent a week filming and producing the video featuring 270 students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and friends of the college who united together to raise awareness for the cause. When the video was released last October, FVCC became the first organization in Montana to produce its own Pink Glove Dance video, joining thousands of organizations from health care facilities to other colleges and universities across the nation. COMMUNITY p6 “This was a very creative, upbeat project, and that’s how my friend was up until the very end of his fight. I liked the message it would send not only to our community but around the globe.” Amanda Haynes FVCC Graphic Design Student record class of 403 graduates recognized at commencement this year; yet, he stood out with distinction because of his ambition and spirit for community service. FVCC President Dr. Jane Karas presented him the Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellows Award, a national honor awarded to 162 college students from across the nation this year. Corey’s passion for community service is richly demonstrated in his commitment to rescue volunteer work. When he’s not searching for avalanche victims, looking for missing hikers, or finding lost skiers, he is volunteering with the Big Mountain Fire Department, working with Flathead County Search and Rescue, training with Kalispell’s A.L.E.R.T. air ambulance, instructing Flathead Nordic Ski Patrol Outdoor Emergency Care classes or teaching CPR classes for ski patrollers, EMTs, nurses and search and rescue personnel. Rescue Hero “Corey’s commitment to continuing his service through Montana Campus Corps is a testament to his desire to serve. A dedicated student both in the classroom and in the field, we are fortunate to have such a devoted student, citizen, and hero in our community.” Jane A. Karas, Ph.D. FVCC President COMMUNITY Corey Ledbetter was among FVCC’s p7 COMMUNITY Nancy Gordley, longtime Flathead Valley Community College Foundation Board member, was recognized this year with the Eagle Award, the college’s most prestigious honor. A 17-year volunteer member of the FVCC Foundation Board, Nancy was recognized for her leadership as Foundation Board chair for many years and for serving in key roles for major fundraising events and activities that helped grow the Foundation’s assets from $60,000 to more than $7 million over the last two decades. In addition to serving as chair of the Foundation’s Building for Success campaign which was instrumental in making the dream of the college’s Occupational Trades Building, Arts and Technology Building and Early Childhood Center come true, she established an endowed scholarship fund in honor of her late husband, Jim, to ensure the futures of FVCC students. Outside the college, Nancy supports FVCC students as she has hired four as part-time employees for her business, Great Harvest Bread Company, in Kalispell. Fundraising Champion p8 “Nancy’s dedication to the future of FVCC and to the futures of our students speaks volumes and has been influential to other Foundation Board members. With her leadership, the Board has continued to function as a highly-effective unit to bring the best of the college to the community and the best of the community to the college.” Jane A. Karas, Ph.D. FVCC President With limited exposure to diversity due to its isolated geographic location, FVCC has made providing enriching, cultural education opportunities a priority for its students and members of the Flathead Valley community. This year, FVCC offered numerous free multicultural events to the community including a Flathead Valley Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Community Celebration featuring Rabbi Allen Secher and live musical performances by blues guitarist Andre Floyd and the Crown of the Continent Choir; Native American song and dance performances by the Diamond Creek Singers and the Whirl Wind Dance Troupe; and a presentation on Tibetan history and art, including a traditional Tibetan butter sculpture demonstration by Tibetan Monk Lama Paljor. COMMUNITY Worldly Education In addition to hosting its fourth annual semester abroad program in Venice, Italy, and second annual spring break tour in London, England, the college expanded its study abroad program by taking its first group of students to Ecuador where they explored the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon Basin and the capitol city of Quito while earning up to six college credits. “As our world becomes more interconnected, the necessity of studying abroad and being exposed to and informed of various cultures has never been greater for American students. International academic experiences and knowledge of foreign cultures are invaluable assets in today’s job market.” Mick Stemborski Multicultural Services and Study Abroad Coordinator p9 Career Coach Last fall, FVCC became the first college in Montana to launch Career Coach, a free online tool that allows students, community members and others to explore career opportunities in Northwest Montana. The tool provides real-time, local information including detailed wage estimates, job trends and up-to-date job postings as well as a resume builder to help students and job seekers quickly and efficiently construct resumes that highlight key skills and job experience.. AR E E C “We wanted to offer a free, simple, easy-to-use tool that would become a key resource for our community. It’s an excellent way to learn about the necessary training and education needed to become qualified for specific jobs. Not only is it a beneficial tool for job seekers, it is a vital resource for local high school and college counselors, area workforce development agencies and market research analysts.” Karen Darrow FVCC Career Development Coordinator R COMMUNITY p10 FVCC Career Development Coordinator Karen Darrow, who connects area employers with FVCC students and alumni for jobs and internships, was instrumental in bringing the tool to FVCC and making it available to FVCC students and the Flathead Valley community. Five years ago, FVCC launched College for a Day to provide area high school juniors a hands-on approach to learning about college, the opportunities it presents and the resources available to help students afford it. This spring, FVCC welcomed over 750 local high school students to campus for the day-long event. Students from Flathead, Glacier, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, and Whitefish high schools experienced the college classroom setting, met college instructors, explored the diverse career options available in the workforce and learned about saving money for college and the various financial resources that are available. Parkside Federal Credit Union partnered with the college by sponsoring the event and donating four $250 college scholarships. “College for a Day provides the platform that allows students to dream about the possibility of advancing their skills, giving them hope that if they work hard in that direction, their dreams will come to fruition. From time to time, students need support from resources outside of their family, and College for a Day provides that opportunity. Parkside strongly believes in supporting financial resources to families, such as this, and that is why we donated $1,000 in scholarships for College for a Day participants to enter to win to help them achieve their dreams.” Jeremy Presta President and CEO, Parkside Federal Credit Union COMMUNITY College for a Day p11 Teamwork FVCC’s Logger Sports Team celebrated this year with an undefeated season, highlighted by its fourteenth national championship title and its capture of the Top Sportsmanship Award at the national competition. When the nation’s top logger sports team isn’t putting in long hours of practice, hitting the books, or traveling to and from their next competitions, members of the team are out in the community volunteering their time, skills and strength to participate in various community service projects. The engineering, forestry, medical, parks and recreation, and photography majors understand the important roles that practice, discipline and good sportsmanship play in their success; yet, their commitment to serving the community is what truly makes them winners. COMMUNITY p12 “This team puts in a lot of community service every year. Not only do they practice hard and put in a lot of time, we expect them to go out and give back to our community. It’s our way of saying thank you to everyone in our community who has helped us and supported us.” Annie Beall Logger Sports Team Coach FVCC’s Student Built House Program commemorated its 15th year by taking on a new type of project— constructing a 2,800-square-foot system-built, transportable house comprised of two halves. Building Trades Apprentice Program Coordinator Greg Waldrop said the decision came after evaluating the local housing market and deciding this type of home would best meet the needs of the local community. Nineteen building trades students, comprised of high school students enrolled in the college’s Running Start program and students who were displaced from their previous jobs, worked meticulously at the construction site building the home to meet code requirements as if the home was constructed on its permanent foundation. What the students produced was a well-built home that could withstand the stress of being transported from one location to another. “We’re so grateful that FVCC has this great program. It’s very rewarding to be a part of this program knowing that this was an invaluable learning experience and that the students are learning the correct methods and techniques of construction. This is a great way to give back and support our local college.” According to Greg, the construction crew that transported the home was very impressed with the durability of the house. “They couldn’t believe the house resisted the typical outcomes that occur when houses are transported,” he said. Greg calls FVCC’s Student Built House Program, that was developed in partnership with the Flathead Building Association, a win-win. “Our students benefit from the high value skill sets they learn from working on the job, and our community members benefit by having the opportunity to purchase affordable, high-quality, well-built homes constructed by hardworking and dedicated students.” Scott and Michelle Hadwin, who purchased the home for Michelle’s father, couldn’t agree more. COMMUNITY Michelle Hadwin Co-owner of the McDonald’s Restaurants in Kalispell, Whitefish and Libby p13 Distinguished Alumni FVCC surveying graduate Ryan Mitchell knows first-hand how well prepared students are when they graduate from FVCC. In fact, as Kalispell office manager of Robert Peccia & Associates, a global civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture firm based out of Helena, Ryan makes it a priority to hire FVCC graduates for the Kalispell branch. “It’s simply because I know the quality of students they produce. I experienced it first-hand. I know how well prepared I was when I transferred to Bozeman.” When Ryan is not working on the job, he can be found on the FVCC campus mentoring students or providing support to engineering and surveying faculty. Ryan’s continuous commitment was recognized at the Ambassadors & Alumni spring luncheon where he was presented the college’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. COMMUNITY p14 “I think there is something special about FVCC and its ability to train people in a way that other schools aren’t. The problem-solving capabilities of students and individuals coming out of FVCC are remarkable, and that is a key reason why we look highly upon FVCC graduates for jobs within our company.” Ryan Mitchell 2012 FVCC Distinguished Alumni Award Winner Chair, FVCC Alumni Council Office Manager, Robert Peccia & Associates Kalispell Branch Kris Long has two passions—working in the field as a paramedic and teaching her students no two chest pains are the same. Kris began her career as a police officer before enrolling in an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course at her local community college so she could become an even better police officer. That launched her 25-year career as a paramedic, and she continues to go strong today. After moving to Montana, Kris served as a 911 Dispatcher for Lake and Flathead Counties, a member of Three Rivers EMS, and a medical assistant at Family Health Care. To fill the need for an EMS service west of Kalispell, she founded West Flathead EMS in 2009 where she serves as the EMS Captain for the volunteer fire department. In addition to her role as program director of FVCC’s paramedicine program, she was instrumental in this year’s establishment of FVCC’s emergency management program, the first of its kind in the state of Montana. Kris was recognized as a “Hometown Hero” in the spring 2012 issue of Flathead Living magazine for her leadership and dedication to the safety of our community. “Community service is about doing what you can to make your community as a whole a better place to be, a place where you are proud to call home. You know that what you give will bring comfort to people during difficult times in their lives, and recognition is not expected for your deeds. I consider it a privilege as well as an honor to be part of the community of public safety professionals, both in my career and through my volunteer work, in Flathead County, in the state of Montana and in our nation.” Kris Long FVCC Paramedicine and Emergency Management Program Director COMMUNITY First Responder p15 When Buffalo Hill Golf Course held a grand opening celebration for its newest addition, a long-awaited driving range, FVCC building trades, heavy equipment operator and cabinet and furniture technology students were spotlighted for their roles in bringing the dream of a driving range at Buffalo Hill to life. Hundreds of Buffalo Hill members and the local golfing industry’s biggest supporters showed up to commemorate the historical moment and applaud the students and their instructors, Greg Waldrop, Chris Moore and Robert Woody, for their hard work to provide Buffalo Hill Golf Course the missing link to its facility. “This new driving range will introduce the game at Buffalo Hill to a whole new level, and it is really going to expand our club’s abilities,” said Buffalo Hill Golf Course Superintendent Jon Heselwood. “This makes Buffalo Hill a true world-class resort.” The project involved the heavy equipment operator students excavating and constructing the new driving range, the building trades students constructing a new equipment storage building and the cabinet and furniture technology students constructing the cabinetry lockers in the club storage building. Susie Burch, FVCC executive director, economic development and continuing education, called the new driving range “a splendid addition to our community” and recognized golf as being an economic driver and a key contributor to the quality of life in the Flathead Valley. COMMUNITY p16 Economic Driver “What a wonderful, meaningful and rewarding opportunity this was for our students. These were real-world experiences that will be invaluable to their futures. This is a perfect example of a win-win for our college and our community.” Susie Burch FVCC Executive Director, Economic Development and Continuing Education rewarding opportunity this was for our students. These were Pioneering Partnership FVCC Chemistry Instructor David Long calls the college’s partnership with Zinc Air Inc. a great success. David, along with his colleague Mariusz Gajewski, spent this year working with the Columbia Falls-based company to provide their chemistry students invaluable opportunities to conduct cutting-edge undergraduate research on elements within Zinc Air batteries and their potential to reduce battery degradation. The students presented their findings in Butte at the Montana Academy of Science and American Chemical Society Meeting in Miniature Conference. Cassia Wagner was one of those students. “Conducting research for Zinc Air gave me taste of what being a scientist is actually like,” said Cassia. “I learned the frustration and thrill of tackling real world problems in a laboratory environment, and I fell in love with it. I chose to become a chemistry major after performing that research. Now as a student at Montana State University, it is far easier to get a job or a summer internship because I already have research experience under my belt.” “The research programs at FVCC offer outstanding experiences for students, instructors, and local industry and businesses. The exposure of the students to cutting-edge developments is an excellent screen for aptitude and interest, and it provides a direct interface between the students and local engineers and scientists. Our staff at Zinc Air Inc. have been impressed by the quality of the students and the research at FVCC, and we consider these efforts favorably in our company’s recruitment plans.” Ron Brost, Ph.D., P.Eng. Chief Technical Officer Zinc Air Incorporated COMMUNITY Next year, the college’s Chemistry Department will continue working with the company after receiving a $43,795 grant from the Montana Space Grant Consortium to support undergraduate research in organic chemistry and electrochemistry for studies on the Zinc Air fuel cell. p17 Major General and Mrs. Paul Vallely of Bigfork paid a lasting tribute to their son, Private First Class Scott Paul Vallely, this year by establishing the Scott Vallely Soldiers Memorial Endowed Scholarship in honor of his memory and service to our country. The Vallelys founded the scholarship with the goal of providing valuable educational assistance to members of the Armed Forces, as well as veterans, who have served our country in peace and war. The family invites others throughout the community to join them in supporting our nation’s servicemen and women by donating to the fund each year to help grow the fund and the number of scholarships that can be awarded to qualified students. A Lasting Tribute COMMUNITY p18 photo credit: Bigfork Eagle/Camillia Lanham “To be honored with such a profound opportunity to continue the Vallelys’ legacy is humbling. Following the example Scott has set, I am challenged to strive to become a worthy leader in my community, so that Scott’s sacrifice will always be remembered.” Andrew Hart 11B, Infantryman Scott Vallely Soldiers Memorial Endowed Scholarship Recipient Montana Mentor Suzy Williams “I support the college because I believe education is so important. FVCC allows anyone who wants to further his or her dreams—from learning to drive a truck or weld, to having the necessary courses to become a nurse or even further education to become a teacher, doctor or engineer. Scholarships are readily available to those who need it, thanks to the dedication of the Foundation and support of teachers and staff. I am proud to be a part of FVCC and the community that supports the dreams of students no matter their ages.” Suzy Williams 2012 Montana Mentor Award Winner COMMUNITY has been called FVCC’s biggest cheerleader. In addition to serving as the founding chair of the FVCC Foundation’s Ambassadors and Alumni Association, which provides opportunities for alumni and friends to be active and engaged in FVCC, Suzy was instrumental in establishing FVCC’s Student Ambassadors Program which is comprised of a select group of students who assist the Foundation with fundraising activities. This year, Suzy volunteered her time and energy chairing the building campaign for the Rebecca Cheney Broussard Center for Nursing and Health Science, which successfully exceeded its $1 million goal by 36 percent. FVCC President Jane Karas recognized Suzy’s commitment to the college and community at commencement by presenting Suzy with the president’s annual Montana Mentor Award. p19 Chris Parson has served as the director of the Northwest Small Business Development Center for the last four years, but in January, he became a new fixture in the FVCC campus community. In his role, Chris assists entrepreneurs and small businesses with developing and improving their business plans, financial management, business management and marketing strategies, and other technical skills so they can optimize their performance in order to succeed in today’s ever-changing and dynamic business environment. In any given month, Chris mentors approximately 20 start-up and existing small businesses in Flathead, Lincoln and Lake counties by providing them with free, confidential one-on-one counseling. COMMUNITY p20 Small Business Support “Providing local business owners with access to resources and business education plays a vital role in supporting the economic vitality of our community. I find it very rewarding to help our local businesses with business plan counseling, financial assistance and market research, and I enjoy guiding aspiring entrepreneurs in the right direction. Having FVCC host the local Small Business Development Center is a natural fit since both organizations have strong commitments to client and student success and to strengthening communities.” Chris Parson Director, Northwest Small Business Development Center “Achieving student success is a top priority for me when teaching. Employers are looking to hire highly-educated surgical techs. This is one way health care facilities can ensure surgical safety, prevent surgical infections, and achieve successful outcomes for their patients.” Erin Howardson FVCC Surgical Technology Program Director COMMUNITY Smooth Operation Under Surgical Technology Instructor Erin Howardson, FVCC received the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Merit Award for achieving a 100 percent graduate pass rate on the 2011 Certified Surgical Technologist examination, compared to the latest national average pass rate of 56.2 percent. This makes for the sixth consecutive year that FVCC surgical technology students have achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the national certification exam. p21 Highlights FVCC graduated its largest class in the college’s 44-year history during the college’s spring 2012 commencement. FVCC awarded 434 degrees and certificates to 403 graduates. COMMUNITY p22 The FVCC Board of Trustees, FVCC President Jane Karas and the college faculty recognized the college’s newest Emeritus Honorees, retired counselor George Shryock and retired vice president of instruction Kathy Hughes, at a special celebration. The special honor was presented to them for serving FVCC with distinction over their lengthy careers. FVCC honored nearly 245 graduates for earning their General Education Development diplomas. FVCC’s Lincoln County Campus celebrated its high completion rate, helping 94.7 percent of students who entered the program in 2012 successfully complete their GEDs. Last fall, FVCC began delivering its practical nursing associate of applied science degree program to Browning in partnership with Blackfeet Community College. The classes are taught by FVCC nursing faculty via interactive television and online classes with labs and clinical classes held at BCC and Browning area health care facilities. The two-year initiative is funded by a U.S. Department of Labor Strengthening the Indigenous Nursing and Emergency Workforce Community Based Job Training Grant. FVCC introduced student housing last fall after entering into a five-year lease agreement with Kalispell Regional Healthcare for 16 apartments to rent as student housing units on their campus. This new endeavor, that provides opportunities for students to have access to affordable housing near the college campus, is an expansion of an existing partnership between FVCC and Kalispell Regional Healthcare that involves preparing FVCC students for careers in health care. “We recognize that partnerships between our health care system and other community resources are essential to fulfilling our mission of improving the health, comfort and lives of those in our region. From student housing on our campus to health care training programs at the college for our hospital’s future nurses and other health care workers, Flathead Valley Community College and Kalispell Regional Healthcare complement one another’s needs. Together, through this unique symbiotic relationship, we are ensuring that our hospital will be staffed with local, qualified nurses and support staff for years to come.” Velinda Stevens President, Kalispell Regional Healthcare COMMUNITY FVCC honored its largest class of practical nursing graduates for successfully completing the two-year associate of applied science degree program. Husband and wife award-winning national journalists Maury Povich and Connie Chung kicked off Flathead Valley Community College’s inaugural President’s Lecture Series with their presentation, “A Conversation with Maury and Connie.” The event opened a free five-part lecture series for the community that focused on the truth in journalism. The series continued with presentations by Dr. Deni Elliott, Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy at the University of South Florida, Saint Petersburg; award-winning journalists and father and daughter Flathead Valley radio icons George Ostrom and Wendy Ostrom-Price; and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution National Economics Writer Michael Kanell. The college also partnered with the American Association of University Women Kalispell branch to present a free screening of the award-winning documentary, “Miss Representation.” COMMUNITY Anmol Grace Manchala became the first student in FVCC history to be awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship awarded to our nation’s top community college students. A native of India, Anmol was one of 60 community college students in the nation to receive the award valued up to $30,000 per year that will assist her with the necessary expenses to achieve a bachelor’s degree at any four-year college or university of her choice in the United States. Anmol is currently attending Montana State University in Bozeman where she is studying pre-medicine. p25 FVCC Foundation Highlights Festival of Flavors 2011 was a tremendous success, raising record net proceeds of approximately $60,000 to provide five full-tuition scholarships for students and six grants for faculty and staff to support innovation in education. The 10-day festival, comprised of 13 events, highlighted eight of the Flathead Valley’s finest chefs and FVCC culinary arts students and culminated with a grand wine tasting event. COMMUNITY p26 The legacy of Chuck Mercord was celebrated on January 24 when the Scholars Program at FVCC classroom was dedicated in his memory. Chuck was recognized as a true visionary and for his leadership in helping to establish Flathead Valley Community College in 1967 and the college’s non-profit Foundation in 1976 and for his service on the Foundation Board of Directors. The Mercord family continues to carry on Chuck’s legacy through their active roles in the Foundation, with Chuck’s wife Kathy serving on the Associate Board and their daughter, Leslie, serving as Foundation Board chair. “Chuck understood how to make a difference. His selfless pursuit of excellence is why we are here today. And because behind every great man is a great woman, we honor Kathryn. Together, they have worked unselfishly to make our community a better place.” Ruth Ackroyd Retired FVCC Director, College Relations The Ambassadors and Alumni of FVCC hosted a record gathering of 120 guests at its annual spring luncheon prepared by the students of The Culinary Institute of Montana at FVCC. The event focused on FVCC’s emerging engineering program and featured a panel of FVCC alumni, faculty and students in the fields of engineering, surveying and physics. The summer 2011 tours of the Bibler Home and Gardens kicked off with a special event featuring the unveiling of “Fertile Ground,” a new painting of the Bibler Gardens by renowned Bigfork artist Nancy Cawdrey. The spring 2012 tours opened with a Mother’s Day champagne brunch prepared by students of The Culinary Institute of Montana at FVCC under the direction of instructor Chef Howard Karp. Combined, the Bibler Home and Gardens spring and summer tours were attended by 576 guests and raised $8,486 to support FVCC student scholarships and programs. COMMUNITY The FVCC Foundation welcomed a record crowd of 248 guests to its annual Scholarship Award Luncheon, which honored scholarship donors and student scholarship recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year. The event provided an opportunity for private scholarship donors to meet the student scholarship recipients. Donors were acknowledged for contributing over $420,800 in private donor scholarship awards helping 287 students attend college, both records for the college. Student scholarship recipients Tony Palmer, Shaunda Crutsinger, Tanner Morrison and Vera Salo addressed guests with their personal stories and the positive impact the scholarships have made on their lives. p27 p27 2011-2012 Honor Roll of Donors Gifts and pledges received between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012 We gratefully acknowledge the following friends and businesses for their confidence and investment in the students and programs at Flathead Valley Community College.
