Thank you! Fr. Tom Choosing Godparents and Sponsors Dear Parents, Catholic Godparents and Sponsors for Baptism serve as models and mentors of Catholic Christianity. The world is blessed with millions of holy, moral, loving & generous non -Catholics both Christian and non-Christian, however, please be mindful, your child is being baptized or confirmed into Catholic Christianity. In order for them to serve as a Godparent and/or Sponsor one has to be a baptized and confirmed Catholic, at least 16 years of age and in good standing, that is, there is clear evidence that one is a practicing Catholic. Being registered in the parish is insufficient. We need evidence that one has been registered for at least one full year, contributes to the support of the parish and faithfully attends Sunday Mass. Further, if you are 25 years of age or older you have to be registered yourself and again show evidence you are in good standing. Please do not ask me to sign sponsor certificates if I cannot be shown clear evidence that one is a Catholic in good standing. It is a sacred and serious honor to be a godparent and/or sponsor but why would any parent want to bestow such an honor upon a non-practicing Catholic? Or ask a non -Catholic to model and mentor Catholicism for their child? My mom’s dad was a very moral, loving and a practicing Protestant Christian, but I would not ask him to serve as a Catholic mentor/model because though he is a wonderful Christian he is not Catholic. Catholic makes us different, never better. To deny and pretend there is really no difference is disrespectful of Protestantism and Catholicism. Being Catholic in name only as well is insufficient unless you would want a godparent/sponsor to model “nominal Catholicism” to your child. Parents, please permit me to ask you to think before you ask someone to be your child’s godparent/ sponsor. Starting with me, we are all sinners. This is not a moral judgment, it simply is a common sense requirement...it is logic. I shall be delighted to sign off on Certificates indicating someone is a practicing Catholic and worthy to serve in this honorable capacity but please don’t ask me to do so if you cannot provide me clear evidence one is, in fact, a practicing Catholic. If I can help any parents further, please let me know how and I shall be happy to do so. Father Tom If you wish to support the Parish by having your bank mail a check directly, you are welcome to do so. Please have checks payable to Assumption Church. Please remember Assumption Church in your estate planning. If you wish to make a donation of appreciated stock to the Parish, you may do so by crediting UBS DTC # 0221 for further credit to Church of the Assumption, Westport, CT Acct. UN R5454-17. New PLS Fund replaces Roncalli House Fund: The Roncalli Fund is now closed but you are most welcome to designate our new PLS FUND as recipient of your charity. This new fund will help us cover the cost to paint (P) the interior of the Church, to put in place 14 micro spot lights (L) on the 14 Stations of the Cross as well as update/upgrade our Sound System (S). Thank you. Marriage Jubilee at Assumption Church Sunday, May 31, 10:30am mass Marriage is a vocation and a Holy Call from God. To acknowledge and honor those in our parish who live this vocation we shall celebrate our Fifteenth Annual Marriage Jubilee on Sunday, May 31st at the 10:30am Mass. All parishioners who are celebrating the following anniversaries in the year 2015 are invited — 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th, or above. To register, please call the Parish Office by Monday, May 25 at (203)2275161. The flowers at Mary’s statue across the street on the river are in honor of Frances Casey Hansen Page 4 Congratulations to our second group of students who received their First Eucharist on Saturday May 16th. These nominees are chosen for their service to the parish. Please complete this form and return it in the offertory collection, mail or drop off at the parish office by Sunday, May 24. Thank you, Fr. Tom I wish to nominate (person or couple) as a worthy recipient of one of the our twenty-five 2015 Parish Service Awards in recognition of their faithful service to Assumption Church. Name (s) _______________________________________________________________ Name of person Nominating: _______________________________________ Awards will be granted on Sunday Evening, June 7th. Seventh Sunday of Easter Reflecting on God’s Word . . . My friend the storyteller Bob Wilhelm shared an “artful” variation on the story of the choice of Matthias. Both Matthias and Barsabbas were artists, so St. Peter decided on a contest. He divided the upper room where the community gathered for worship with a curtain, giving half to each man to decorate as he saw fit. The community would declare the winner and Judas’ successor. Catholic Daughters Page 5 Annual Barsabbas, a painter, sent for his brushes and a rich assortment of paints. All week long he painted lovely scenes of Jesus preaching, teaching, healing, casting out demons. His brush captured the parables, illuminating them. Matthias, a stonecutter and polisher, also toiled all week behind this curtain. People could hear only his humming and soft singing. The day came and the people entered Barsabbas’ half of the church. They broke into applause at his artistry. The uses of color were magnificent. They found themselves depicted in his paintings. They were delighted. Peter became worried. How could Matthias’ work possibly compete with this? But he went over to the curtain and turned it back. Silence filled the room as people turned to see what Matthias had done. His work had been to polish the stone walls of the chapel’s other half, allowing people to see themselves as never before. The walls shone like mirrors and every person was given a sense of the beauty of Christ shining within them, a glimpse of the divine spark each one carried within. And so Matthias was chosen to replace Judas. He had revealed Christ by revealing Christ’s followers to themselves. - James A. Wallace - Saturday, May 23rd & Sunday, May 24th Please stop by after the 5:00pm mass on Saturday and at the Sunday 9:00, 10:30 and noon masses. Remember, come early for the best selection! Bringing Holy Communion to the Homebound & Eucharistic Ministry Sr. Catherine’s ministry to the sick and homebound was evidence of Christ’s presence, “Christ has...no hands, no feet but yours.” (S. Therese of Avila). Grateful for Sister’s extraordinary work, Helen Thiemann, Cathy Romano and I realize how essential visiting the sick and bringing the Holy Eucharist to them is and we wish to continue this important ministry. There are two ways to participate: (1) as a minister to the homebound and (2) as a recipient of this service. As a minister to the homebound, you may already be a Eucharistic Minister; this will be an extension of your generous service. However, you need not be a Eucharistic Minister and can be commissioned to simply visit and bring Holy Communion to the homebound and not serve at the Altar. Please call Helen Thiemann at 203-227-6318 or [email protected] for details. Homebound and sick persons in our parish (or family members on their behalf) are encouraged to phone the rectory to request a visit. Their appeal will be answered. Deacon David and I also share in this ministry. I am always available for the Sacraments of the Sick and Reconciliation. Anyone interested in being a Eucharistic Minister of the Altar, please call Cathy Romano at 203-226-5448 or [email protected] for details. On Sunday, June 7th, the Feast of The Body and Blood of Christ at the 5:00pm mass, I shall commission any new Eucharistic Ministers of the Altar, of the Homebound or both. I shall re-commission and bless all current Eucharistic Ministers. Thank you for considering these parish services. Sincerely, Helen Thiemann, Homebound Visitation Coordinator Cathy Romano, Eucharistic Minister Coordinator Fr. Tom, Pastor Page 6 As of our latest report, our parish has reached $181,988 from 334 donors bringing the parish to 93.33% of its $195,000 goal. According to the Connecticut Food Bank, nearly 19% of Connecticut’s children are at risk of hunger. The rate in Fairfield County is 15.5%. During the school year children at risk of hunger receive free or reduced-priced school meals. But that ends when summer vacation begins. While the majority of donations to food closet and pantries come in during the holiday season, the reality is that the highest demand for food is in the summer. A family with two children has to come up with more than 200 extra meals during the summer. Saturday, June 13th, 5:00pm Mass Sunday Masses, June 14th until 1:00pm Members of Social Concerns will be in the parking lot before the Saturday, 5:00pm Mass and Sunday from 7:45am to 1:00pm to collect your gifts. The children who will be the beneficiaries of your generosity attend summer programs at: The Missionaries of Charity house; Waltersville School; Sister Theresa Tremblay’s school (all located in Bridgeport, CT), Children of Open Door Shelter, Norwalk. p sho o t o tt ime n t a w ie No till l Conn s and , cal 937 -9 ate don 3-852 20 Non-Perishable Items needed: Canned Goods: Tomato sauce, beans, soups, vegetables, fruits, tuna, canned meats.
