recorded here in 2009. “Every time I visit
Mallorca, I’m reminded of my second home in
Sicily,” he told Deluxe in an exclusive interview. In the coastal resort of Taormina, Jim Kerr
owns the delightful Villa Angela Hotel, from
which guests have a spectacular view of
Mount Etna – but who knows what would have
happened if he had visited the two islands in
reverse order? On the website of his hotel, he
writes that he fell in love with Sicily at first
sight. Maybe so, but we can’t help thinking
think that Mallorca would have had the same
effect.
Leaving that aside, his ‘Lostboy AKA Jim
Kerr’ album obviously had to be recorded in
the UK, at the legendary Rockfield Studio in
Monmouth . Although the music is reminiscent
of Simple Minds, it also comes across as fresh-
er, more youthful and full of joie de vivre. A
number of critics have voiced their regret that
Kerr waited till he was 50 before reprising his
youth. The positive feedback from the other
group members (“They’d quite like to be up
there on the stage with me, but then it wouldn’t
be a solo project”) and Jim’s fans make it clear
that this is not just some bored rock star indulging a whim: the power and energy that emerge from all the songs are proof enough of the
love and dedication that went into the making
of this debut album: “They may have revolutionised the technology that goes into the music
industry over the last 30 years, but at the end
of the day, it’s all about four people coming
together searching for a feeling and a melody.” Kerr’s own favourite from the Lostboy
album is The Wait. Well now the wait is over...

he founder and driving force
behind Glasgow band Simple
Minds can look back on a successful career in music that
extends over three decades.
Many of the group’s albums have
topped the charts in the UK,
Europe, Canada and Australia. Their first
records were strongly influenced by punk, but
they then went on to compose songs that were
more danceable, easier on the ear and therefore had a greater public appeal.
Global sales of Simple Minds records and
CDs now exceed 30 million, which puts them
up there alongside U2 and Depeche Mode as
one of the most successful groups to have

emerged from the British Isles . The song that
established their international reputation in
1985, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’, still gets
plenty of air time on the radio. Multitalented
lyricist, composer and singer Jim Kerr has stamped his own personality on the song with his
unmistakable voice. Over time, his lyrics became increasingly politicised as the band took up
the cause of Amnesty International, appeared
at the Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia and
sent out a heart-felt message about the conflict
in Northern Ireland with their best-known hit,
Belfast Child. So they are anything but “simple
minded” really. In the nineties and at the start
of the new millennium, the band embarked on
a series of massive tours, the most recent of
which was the Graffiti Soul Tour to celebrate
their 30th anniversary.
More recently, Jim Kerr has felt drawn to his
own youth and its associated memories. With
his first solo album, he has realised his dream
of expressing the energy, open-mindedness
and curiosity of his alter ego as a teenager
and young adult. And in May of this year, he
set off on a tour to showcase his ‘Lostboy AKA
Jim Kerr’ album. One of his stop-offs during the
month of August was in Mallorca, where he
delighted his fans in a performance at the
Hotel St Regis Mardavall in Costa d’en Blanes.
In fact, this was not his first visit to the Island,
because Simple Minds also put in a guest
appearance on the ‘Wetten, dass ...?’ show

Seit nunmehr über dreissig Jahren ist der Kopf
und Gründer der Simple Minds aus dem schottischen Glasgow mit seiner Band im Musikgeschäft erfolgreich. Etliche Alben der Simple
Minds stürmten nicht nur in England, sondern
auch im restlichen Europa, in Kanada und Australien die Charts. Die ersten Platten waren
noch stark vom Punk beeinflusst, später jedoch
wurde die Musik tanzbarer, gefälliger und
somit massentauglich.

Bis heute haben die Simple Minds weltweit
über 30 Millionen Tonträger verkauft und zählen damit – neben U2 und Depeche Mode – zu
den erfolgreichsten Formationen der Britischen
Inseln. Bestimmt kann sich jeder noch gut an
den Hit „Don´t you“ (forget about me) erinnern, mit dem die Band 1985 international
bekannt wurde. Jim Kerr, Texter, Komponist
und Sänger in Personalunion, drückt seither mit
seiner unverwechselbaren Stimme jedem Song
einen einzigartigen Stempel auf. Seine Texte
wurden zunehmend politischer, die Band engagierte sich u.a. für Amnesty International,
trat beim Live-Aid-Konzert in Philadelphia auf
und bezog mit ihrem wohl bekanntesten Stück
„Belfast Child“ Stellung zum Nordirlandkonflikt. Also eigentlich alles andere als „simple

Irgendwann fühlte sich Jim Kerr zu seiner
eigenen Jugend und den damit verbundenen

Solo-Album verwirklichte er sich den Traum,
die Energie, Offenheit und Neugier seines
Alter Ego als Teenager und junger Mann dar-
