recognize and thank our volunteers, and salute our
benevolent friends. These collective teams provide

After a lengthy application and review process, we
were fortunate to receive Magnet Accreditation Exemplary Status from Meals on Wheels Association of America. This
achievement gives special recognition to the professional management and
performance of our organization in meeting the nutritional needs of seniors
throughout our community. The fact that we are the first Meals on Wheels
organization in Pennsylvania and the fourth in the United States to earn this
level of accreditation is a wonderful accomplishment.
Meal
This year, we will prepare 90,000 additional meals as compared to the
previous year. By the end of this year, we anticipate we will prepare 500,000
meals. This represents a 9 percent increase among our own clients. In
addition, we have added a new meal contract with Meals on Wheels of
Monroe County that involves the preparation and delivery of approximately
300 meals per day. We also continue to maintain meal contracts with Meals on
Wheels of Lehigh County and the Senior Centers throughout Lehigh County.
All of these combined efforts have contributed substantially to the increased
number of prepared meals.
However, despite our growth and success, we continue to face definite
financial challenges. Government funding (from both state and federal
agencies), that helps to subsidize the cost of meals for 95% of our seniors who
are low income, is dwindling fast and furious. This year, the Pennsylvania
Department of Long Term Care and Aging placed a freeze on government meal
subsidies. In addition, we also face an additional 15 percent cut, an
estimated $30,000, in meal subsidies provided by Northampton County
Agency of Aging. The lack of adequate meal subsidies for seniors in financial
need underscores our reliance on the generosity of friends and various fund
raising efforts thoughout the year. All will be needed and are sincerely
appreciated as we strive to make up the difference.
Thanks to our donors and our volunteers, we had the privilege of serving
1,548 seniors this year. Because of You . . . they enjoyed the benefits of good
nutrition and the satisfaction of being able to remain living in their own homes.

“Eat a Wing for Charity” Helps Benefit
Meals on Wheels Third Year in a Row!
On October 3rd, the Annual Wing Eating Contest, hosted
by George Lioudis, Lehigh Pizza (www.lehighpizza.com)
and Brian Mixtacki, Through the Looking Glass
(www.ttlgdesign.com), helped to raise over $800 in
support of meal subsidies. Under a huge tent, this year’s
event drew a record crowd of friends who cheered on 22
wing-eating contestants. For the second year in a row,
“Pot Belly” proved to be the winning champion. Our own
Betsy Laylon, Past President, Board of Directors joined
JoAnn Bergeron Nenow, Executive Director, to represent
Meals on Wheels in the competition.
Meals on Wheels of Northampton County’s “Ani-Meals on
Wheels” is a free, invaluable service available to all current
Meals on Wheels clients. Pet food (donated by Phillips Feed
Company, The Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley, and
T.J. Max Store employees) is currently available for cats,
dogs, birds, and fish. Funding for the program is made
possible through Banfield Charitable Trust. The pet food is
conveniently distributed by volunteers when they deliver a
client’s daily meals. This program allows clients to continue
keeping their pets in their home.
Rev. Raymond A. Malec Named Trustee Emeritus
At the annual meeting of the Board of Directors on
December 8, 2010, Betsy Laylon, Past President of the
Board of Directors, presented the title of Trustree Emeritus
to Reverend Raymond A. Malec in recognition of his 26
years of service on the board. During this time, he served
two terms as President and was instrumental in planning
the construction of our current facility.

The Path to Success: Our 2010 Achievements
• Meals on Wheels of Northampton County earned Exemplary Status - Magnet Accreditation, awarded by Meals on Wheels
Association of America.
• A new meal contract with Meals on Wheels of Monroe County began in July 2010 to prepare and deliver approximately
300 meals per day for delivery by their volunteers to seniors living in the greater Monroe County region.
• 1,548 older and disabled adults throughout Northampton County were provided home delivered meals.
• Meal delivery routes increased from 50 to 55 routes to serve more seniors in need of meal assistance.
• Volunteers who delivered meals contributed 36,350 hours of service, driving an estimated 178,919 miles to deliver meals,
using approximately 11,298 gallons of gas at an estimated cost of $30,416.
• Volunteers who participate in the FoodLine program completed 1,424 grocery shopping trips for homebound seniors,
56 more trips than the previous year.

Meals on Wheels of Northampton County adheres to the Donor Bill of
Rights as created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals:

To inform donors of our mission and to use their gifts for
intended purposes.
2.
To inform donors of those serving on the Board of Directors and
assure them that the Board will exercise prudent judgment in its
stewardship responsibilities.
3.
To offer donors access to our most recent financial statements.
4.
To assure donors that their gifts will be used for the purpose for
which they were given.
5.
To provide appropriate acknowledgement and recognition for
charitable gifts.
6.
To insure that donations are handled with respect and
confidentiality as determined by law.
7.
To insure that relationships with individuals at Meals on Wheels
will be professional in nature.

Recognition Event - October 6, 2010
On October 6th, donors were welcomed to a reception
at Meals on Wheels. Those whose cumulative giving has
reached specific levels were recognized and their names
appear on leaves that encompass the Tree of Life,
displayed in the MOW Volunteer Lounge. Members

permit delivery by MOW volunteers. Blizzard
boxes are provided to every client free of charge
and replaced as needed during the winter months.
