WOMANLINE
a COUNSELING CENTER
Compassionate, affordable counseling
especially for women.
2009 - 2010 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
The Combined Federal
Campaign Regulations require
that donor lists not be released
to anyone other than the
recipient agency. Accordingly,
we have omitted the names of
donors who have given only
through the Combined Federal
Campaign.
We have taken great care to
correctly list all donors. We
apologize if your name has
been listed incorrectly or
omitted accidentally. Please
contact us so we can correct
our error.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
The majority of the women who come to Womanline for
help with emotional problems have at some point in their
lives been sexually abused—some as early as five years of
age. There a very few more traumatic events in a child’s life
than to be sexually abuse by someone she trusts—a parent,
a relative, a coach, a teacher, etc.. The emotional stress
caused by his abuse continues to affect women well into
their adult years, often for a lifetime. Most survivors, as we
call them, will need treatment over a long period of time.
Sadly, most cannot afford that care.
Treatment by private psychiatrists, psychologists, or
counselors is very expensive. Very few of our clients have
the insurance or personal wealth to pay for it. Sixty-seven
percent of our clients this past year were divorced or
single. These women earned an average of $9,700 a year.
Women who were married and had dependents were worse
off, living in a household with an average income of only
$24,000.
Although we have been able since September, 2009 to bill
Medicaid and some insurance companies, many of our
clients do not qualify under either. To make counseling
affordable for these women, we adjust our fee. On the
average, our clients pay less than 20% of the cost of an
hour of counseling.
Thank you.
Most of the financial support for Womanline comes from
individuals, corporate donors and foundations. All of
these sources, on whom we have relied for years, are faced
with the same economic facts: donors who have lost jobs
or have less disposable income, fewer or smaller pledges,

In the Fall of last year, we developed an aggressive business
plan, setting out financial goals and strategies we believe
will help us over the next several years weather the current
economic storm, increase revenue from the services we
provide, and meet the growing need in the community.
The second part of that plan is keeping our costs as low
possible while delivering the highest quality services to our
clients. Six months into the plan, we are pleased with the
progress we have made so far. A critical part of that plan,
as you might expect, is to maintain the support of private
donors. Without private support, we cannot make up the
difference between our cost and the revenue we earn from
client fees, insurance, and Medicaid.
We know that throughout the year our donors receive
many requests from deserving charities—charities that are
an important part of a network essential to the health and
welfare of the community—faced with the same financial
challenge as we. We are proud to know that you count
Womanline among the agencies worthy of your support.
Without the financial support provided by our donors,
these women would not get the help they need.

smaller returns on investments or declining stock market
values. We have taken the same hit on our own investments.
The past two years we have seen a decline in donations
and grants from all of these sources. This decline in giving
limits our ability to help women at a time when the demand
just keeps growing.

THIRTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL LUNCHEON
On April 24, 2010, the Womanline Auxiliary, which has
been hosting an annual luncheon for the past thirty-seven
years, once again feted their guests with an afternoon at
the Mandalay filled with good food and entertainment.
The highlight of the luncheon was a fashion show,
with fashions by The Secret Ingredient of Town &
Country. For the second year in a row, the fashions were
modelled by members of the Womanline Board and other
volunteers. Over $3,000 in donated items were raffled
off during the program and sold through an online
auction.
Vectren, as it has been for the past three years, was this
year’s grand sponsors. Other sponsors were Dayton Power
and Light, Premier Health Partners, Kettering Health
Network, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Uhl Agency,
Mark Fornes Realty, Greater Dayton RTA, Providence
Medical Group, and Midwest Design Computers.
Young Women Leaders Award
Another highlight of the Luncheon was the honoring of
four outstanding young women leaders. From over sixty
nominations, four young women were selected this year
to receive the annual Young Women Leaders award and
a $500 scholarship. The Young Women Leaders Award,
established in 2008, is an annual award given to high
school seniors and college students to recognize young
women who have seen a need or problem in the Dayton
community or anywhere in the world, inspired others to
become involved, gathered resources and planned
activities to meet that need or solve the problem, and laid
the foundation for continuation of their efforts.
Honorees
Amy Arnett. This Wright State University senior saw
an opportunity for members of the WSU Marketing
Club to use their marketing skills to help with the
March of Dimes annual March For Babies fundraiser.
Under her leadership, Club members created a route
card for the March, collected funds, and organized
groups to participate in the annual march. As one of her
nominators said, “Amy exemplifies the volunteer spirit of
our young women in this nation.”
Kasheen Swango, Deb Franz, Tonya Zengel, Rhonda Miller,
Julie Krabill, Barbara Ann Hardy, Jean Smith (manager, The Secret
Ingredient), Courtney Stengal, Jeanette Rudy, Lois Sutherland,
Cary Hatton.
Larquana Bryan. This University of Dayton sophomore
stepped into the role of president of a service club that
was faltering, and energized others to get involved in
community activities. Their first effort was to design and
hold workshops to encourage and help Belmont High
School seniors prepare for the college admission process.
Larquana and her club also adopted an afterschool
mentoring program at the Wesley Community Center,
where they tutor young children.
Kayla Shelley. This Chaminade-Julienne High School
senior went on a mission trip to Belize in the summer of
2008, thinking it would just be an adventure. What she
saw there changed her for life. On her return to school in
the Fall, she and Amy Stoddard formed a service club to
collect clothing, books, and supplies for girls in Belize.
That modest objective evolved into a project, they called
“Loose Change to Loosen Chains.” In one week the two
young women raised over $4,500 to help put two girls
through high school.
Annie Stoddard. Like, Kayla Shelley, this ChaminadeJulienne senior couldn’t forget her experience in Belize.
As president of the Key Club she worked to get more
students involved in community service, even getting
more students signed up to go to Belize this summer.
Not wanting their successful efforts to raise money for
young girls in Belize to go to school to end with their
graduation, she has worked with the faculty and Board of
Trustees at her school to make their fundraising project
an annual event. In Annie’s words, “if you see injustice
with your own eyes, you will gain all you need to lead
others in making a difference.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
I CAN TELL
I Can Tell has been a staple of Womanline’s prevention
effort for over two decades. This classroom-based
program has been designed to reduce the incidence
and prevalence of childhood sexual abuse by teaching
basic information to young children about abuse, how
to recognize signs of abuse, how to protect themselves,
how to report abuse should it happen, and by preparing
teachers to assist children, who come to them for help.
Since the first of January, 2009 our educator has
given eighty-two presentations to over 1,800 children.
Participating schools are: Belle Haven, Charity Adams,
Driscoll, E. J. Brown, Horace Mann, Menlo Park,
Monticello, Rushmore, Ruskin, and Valley Forge.
The program is funded by CareSource Foundation,
WorkflowOne, and Target.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Women who were sexually abused as children tend to
require longer treatment, because of the difficulty in
working through emotional disorders dating back to their
childhood. It is the nature of the trauma that survivors
often repress the memory of the abuse, and continue to
feel ashamed and guilty for what happened to them as
children, adding to their reluctance to talk about their
past.
In 2009, Womanline began an advertising campaign using
GPS-triggered ads on RTA buses throughout the area to
reach out to survivors and other women with emotional
problems. That coupled with limited radio ads has
greatly increased the number of calls for counseling.
Today the counseling program is seeing a twofold
increase in the number of clients, and is now employing
two full time counselors. Recently, the agency began an
aggressive campaign to get doctors to refer women with
health and mental health problems.
When the agency earned COA accreditation and
certification from the Ohio Department of Mental
Health, we were able to obtain a Medicaid contract with
the local Mental Health Board. Although our counselors
were treating clients with Medicaid before, we were not
able to bill for their services. In addition to Medicaid,
the counseling program is an approved provider under
