Dear Alumni and Friends,
“After the Baptism of his baby brother in church, little Johnny sobbed all the way home in the back
seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, “That priest
said that he wanted us to be brought up in a Christian home, but I want to stay with you guys”.
I told this somewhat humorous story in my homily on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Each
year the Church invites us to go back to that place where it all began, to go back to the unimpressive,
muddy, slow-moving waters of the Jordan River. We see the familiar and eccentric figure of John the
Baptist wearing camel hair and his breath smelling of locusts! After the Baptism of Jesus we are told that
the heavens were opened and the voice of the Father proclaimed: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am
well pleased” (Luke 3:22).
Wherever our baptism was celebrated that same truth was proclaimed. Perhaps the Father’s voice
was not audibly heard but the truth of our most basic identity as God’s beloved child resounded in the
depths of our being. How important is that we as Christians remain grounded and secure in our identity as
God’s beloved child and live out of that identity every day of our lives! What a difference it makes in our
relations with one another if we believe that we are loved by God and belong to him not because of
anything that we have done to deserve it but simply because God first loved us!
Day after day, bad news fills the headlines! We are living in the shadow of the shooting at
Newtown. Violence is commonplace in many areas of our world. In the face of all of this people are
advocating a wide range of solutions from arming to disarming everyone. We try to create an illusion of
security that is shattered with the act of violence. In the face of all of the negative voices from without
and from within we need to go deeper into our very selves and hear again the voice of the Father calling
us his beloved child. If only Adam Lanza heard this gentle and loving voice in the depths of his heart,
perhaps his life could have unfolded in an entirely different direction.
The family is rightly called “the domestic church”. It is within the family that faith is nurtured
and the voice of the Father calling us the beloved become clearer. If only families would recognize the
essential link between the altar-table in the parish church and their own family tables at home. Our
Catholic schools like our beloved SMI and our committed Faith Formation programs are no substitute
for the daily witness of living the Faith in a family setting!
The journey began for Jesus at the waters of the Jordan River. Our journey of faith began in the
watery setting as well with our baptism. As we truly live our faith every day, then our children will not
have to cry all the way home like Johnny did after his baby brother’s baptism. In the context of a home
environment permeated with faith, our children will not have to be afraid that alternate Christian homes
will have to be found to raise them!
Peace,
Rev. John M. Medwid
Pastor

Dear Alumni and Friends of SMI,
As I reflect on the rich history St. Mary’s Institute has embossed on the fabric of the Mohawk Valley, I am
reminded of the foundational source of grace and providence that has guided us throughout our school’s
130+ year existence. I am humbled by the depth of our committed teachers and parents who contributed to
the spiritual and educational achievements of our students. Those who served and serve our mission, past and
present, have enabled us to blossom as an educational institute truly focused on the needs of our children and
their future role as citizens in a world filled with exciting challenges and endless opportunities.
By living our mission, we are confident that for the next 130+ years we will continue to deepen our
faith-based, child-centered, academically-excellent, family-focused and service-oriented Catholic school
environment. Standing on the shoulders of those that came before us, we rededicate ourselves to empowering
our children, parents, teachers, parishioners, alumni, and friends of our beloved school to be active partners in
the educational process. Together, we are forever linked by our deep love and unwavering support for SMI.
Throughout the pages of this newsletter, you will relive the exciting highlights that occurred within our
community during the 2012 calendar year. As you journey with us over the past year, you will be moved by
the transformative accomplishments we enjoyed as a result of our shared belief in our mission. We are proud
to proclaim our endeavors and accomplishments in our Catholic identity, our curriculum, our technology, our
graduates, our community, and in our fiscal management.
As you reflect upon the narrative of these pages, be proud and know that St. Mary’s Institute is blossoming
with a promising future: a future that will forward and advance the mission of providing a quality Catholic
education for the children of our community: a community that extends beyond a 15 mile radius and
transforms the neighborhood school model of yesteryear into an encompassing and diverse one. We are truly
living the vision with foresight that is inspiring schools throughout our diocese and the nation to emulate.
As you read on, I hope you will engage again the wonderful partnership that we have with all of you, our
alumni and friends of our Catholic community. We are now challenged to answer the call to move forward.
We do so with the awareness that without the grace of God and the support of you, our benefactors, we would
not be able to accomplish all that we do each day. We are grateful for your support and ask that you keep the
students, staff and families of St. Mary’s Institute in your prayers. May God continue to bless you and watch
over you in 2013.
With gratitude,
Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr.
Principal

~ SMI 2012 HAPPENINGS ~
On October 12, 2012, as a prelude to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha’s Canonization, the students
in grades 1-8 of St. Mary’s Institute were privileged to enjoy a trip to the Shrine of Our Lady of
Martyrs, in Auriesville, NY, the birthplace of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. On a beautiful autumn
morning, the students toured through the Sacred Ravine, viewed a documentary and visited the
historic museum. Afterward, they gathered for a Mass in the enormous Coliseum, whose
architecture is reminiscent of the Roman Amphitheater where early Christians were matyred. The
students also enjoyed lunch on the amazing grounds, which afforded them a panoramic view of the
Mohawk River Valley. As a culmination of the events leading up to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha’s
Canonization, the entire student body of St. Mary’s Institute celebrated a Liturgy in her honor
held on Monday, October 22, 2012. A bit of past history, on April 4, 1989, St. Mary’s Cafeteria
(former East Main Street school) was dedicated to Kateri Tekakwitha with the painting at left,
which was donated by Tom & Carol Constantino. This portrait now hangs in SMI’s current
cafeteria on Kopernik Blvd., the former Bishop Scully High School.
A beautiful illustration of Our Lady of Guadalupe was generously donated to Saint Mary’s Institute by Monica Hohenforst and
her family. This year, SMI hosted three international students from Mexico. Our
Lady of Guadalupe is one of Mexico’s most popular religious and cultural images.
It is said that a peasant named Juan Diego had a vision of a young girl surrounded by
light, which he recognized as the Virgin Mary. The magnificently illuminated
young woman asked him to build a church in her honor where she was standing. As
a miraculous sign, which would prove her identity, the Virgin instructed Juan Diego
to gather flowers from the top of a hill in the middle of December. Juan walked up
the hill, found Castilian roses (which are not native to Mexico) and placed them in
his cloak with her help. Later, when Juan opened the cloak, the flowers fell to the
floor. Where they once rested on his cloak appeared an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe now stands on the site where Juan
Diego had his first vision. Thank you, Monica, for your kind donation. The students of SMI will continue to be inspired by our school’s namesake. Pictured at right: Fr. John Medwid, Thomas Hohenforst, Mrs.
Hohenforst, Hannah Hohenforst, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Nuria Gonzalez, Melissa Noriega and Principal, Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio.
Ellis Island Day is an annual class project for Mrs. Baird’s 4th grade
class. Students experience the whole immigration process, from dressing
up from their homeland, carrying luggage, having proper documentations,
passing physical tests and everyone must have a letter of recommendation
written for them to be shown at the check points before they are eventually
welcomed into America. Pictured at left shows students waiting in line
getting ready to go through various check points. After passing each test
set before them, they are welcomed by site of the Statue of Liberty and
awarded citizenship.

To the Alumni Newsletter Staff,
Thank you for your hard work gathering updated news about my former
classmates, I appreciate it.
As for myself, I’m still hanging in there, thanks to the good Lord.
However, I’m now practically a shut-in since developing MD (Macular
Degeneration). Don’t drive so it’s stay at home. So if anyone would like
to chat-gossip or whatever, call me at (803) 788-7744 or email
[email protected]. I’m always at home.

Dear SMI,
We would like to say a big THANK YOU for the dedication to Mom
(Rosemary Van Allen Francisco ’49) and printing the
letter from Fr. Cal Poulin her memory in the 2011 Newsletter.
Starting the Alumni Association and newsletter was a large part of her life
for many years-an accomplishment of which she was very proud. She and
Jacque (Morini) Bresonis ‘64 worked tirelessly in the beginning gathering all
of the class information and addresses and phone numbers for such an undertaking . In the beginning I remember they had phone-a-thons and envelope
stuff-a-thons — of course, I was “drafted” to help.
Even after ‘retiring” she would still cut out articles and send them along
saying...the staff will not know this person or that person’s connection in the
school. When the newsletter would arrive, she would flip first to the lost
alumni going through the list saying I know where this one, this one, are...and
then go get out the phone book or make a phone call and have an address to
send along.
I am sure over the past few years, she was a great source of “Institutional
Memory”. She would be pleased that the newsletter continues and is
growing. Our heartfelt thanks-and best for your continued success.

Dear Alumni Association,
Another year and almost 60 years later here we are. I have been retired
since 1997 and as we know in retirement, one is more active than when we
were working. Beverly, my 51+ years wife, is writing her second book with
her first one a success-”Changing Lanes-couples redefining retirement”. As
for me this is my 12th year volunteering with my Mr. McSymphony’s Music
Programs in elementary schools. Now have 16 volunteers helping me, and we
have presented to over 65,000 children in 30 schools. If interested in seeing
what the programs are, visit my web site at Mcsymphony5.com.
Miss all the friends from the class of 1953 and hate to go back and see the
tormented city. Not as we grew up in. We both still play golf, enjoy wine
tasting clubs here in “Sun City Palm Desert”, workout three times a week and
have fun traveling. Grandkids growing up too fast. Let us know if anyone
comes out this way. God Bless to all~

From the Alumni desk:
This year truly held a few of the most exhilarating times here in the Alumni Office beginning with the discovery
of an unmarked box in a storage room. This box held a large old book which contains handwritten names of students
whom have attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Institute since it’s doors opened in 1880. On top of that, having
Rocky McCune call me to tell me he found his 1940 yearbook and wanted to donate it to our archive department. Now
what can be more exciting for any Alumni office then this? For me, it was being able to finally place the names on a few
very old (1889,1900,1927 ) graduating class photographs that have been donated over the years to SMI and to complete a
full set of yearbooks beginning from 1938 to our current year. This also adds to another one of my goals while in the
director’s seat here, and that is to eventually have a framed class photo of each of SMI’s graduating classes along with
graduates names, hung on a wall for every new family entering our school doors to see, admire and possibly recognize a
family descendants name.
Topping off this inspiring year, was the long awaited recognition of a man who was very dedicated to his family,
St. Mary’s Institute and Bishop Scully High School, a mentor to many, Coach “Dutch” Howlan, finally getting the
recognition he so gracefully earned into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.

2012 Yearbook Dedications
The Class of 2012 dedicated their yearbook to three individuals who have
been with them throughout their grade
school journey through SMI. Their
yearbook dedication went out to their
middle school science and
homeroom teacher, Mrs. Bernadette
Pecora. “She has motivated us to do
our best, and has brought us so many
amazing memories. She has made us more confident and enthusiastic by telling us
to look in the mirror every morning and say “Hey good-looking.” Class
representatives honored superintendent of SMI’s buildings & grounds,
Mr. Matthew Constantine, Sr. for his twenty two years of dedication to the school
and for his continual support of extra-curricular sport activities such as indoor/
outdoor volleyball, basketball and soccer programs. The graduating class also
recognized Mrs. Helen Abbattisti for her generosity and kindness she has shown
throughout their years at SMI. “Mrs. Abbattisti has done many wonderful things for
us out of the goodness of her heart. She has a positive influence on everyone and
puts great happiness and memories into the school.” Thank you, Mrs. Pecora, Mr.
Constantine and Mrs. Abbattisti for making our SMI school years special.

Fr. Calvin “Cal” H. Poulin, SJ ~ Class of 1949
In Memory Of
Father Cal
By
Robert Going ‘66-9
Everyone knew Helen Poulin, the widowed mother of three priests and a nun. For many years, she
served the Sisters of St. Joseph at their Grove Street convent as the house cook. I remember my grandmother
going through some old photographs and finding one of young Cal Poulin as an altar boy. She promptly put
it in and envelope. “I’m sending this to Helen. She must be so proud!” she told me, about the same time suggesting I should consider the priesthood, and maybe the Jesuits at that.
The road to priesthood among the Society of Jesus is a long one. For Cal Poulin, it was a thirteen year
preparation before his ordination just before my first birthday. His first Mass he celebrated here at St.
Mary’s, a festival of pomp and joy, of magnificent mystery. In those days, the altar boys formed something
of a choir, and we processed in our cassocks and surplices, our Eton collars and black satin ties. We learned
a new hymn for the occasion: Thou art a priest forever, Thou art a priest forever! According to the order of
Melchizedek. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Amen. Even translated through the squeaky voices of untalented
pre-teen boys, it is a hymn of transcendent beauty.
During the Prayer of the Faithful at morning Mass, I learned that Father Cal had passed to his eternal
reward in his beloved Philippines. Over the decades, he returned to St. Mary’s many times, even after he had
no family left here. He always spared a few moments for me, after Mass, and remarkably always remembered who I was, even when I’d grown old enough to have altar boys of my own. He had an infectious smile,
a solid intellect, and a pretty good grasp of the City of God and the City of Men.
Not long after the peaceful uprising of the Filipino people that led to the replacement of the dictator
Marcos with Corazon Aquino, he told us of the events leading up to that moment. He was part of a large
street assembly, tens of thousands of protestors. A murmur passing through the crowd began to turn into a
distant roar approaching them. “She’s coming! She’s coming!” Father Poulin waited then excitedly for the
appearance of the widow Aquino. But it was not the future president of the Philippines at all. Instead, a large
statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared, weaving its way through the crowd. Humble people dropped to
their knees in prayer, reciting the rosary together. Those prayers led to a peaceful transfer of power and the
restoration of democracy.
Some years later, after having served nearly his entire priesthood in that country, his order transferred
him for a time to Nigeria, at the time a war-tor nation. Just before he left, he visited Amsterdam again.
“Father,” I said to him, “I’m a little concerned. Don’t they like, EAT Jesuits in Nigeria these days?” He
laughed. “Not to worry. We’re not digestible.” He finished out his days back in his adopted country, a
source of wisdom and strength for the people of that land.
Eternal rest grant unto him, o Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Thou art a priest forever.
The Loyola School of Theology announced the demise of former LST Professor of Moral theology,
Fr. Calvin “Cal” H. Poulin, SJ., whom passed away early in the evening of February 19, 2012 in
Maria Reyna-Xaview University Hospital, Cagayan de Oro City. He was laid to rest on
February 23 at a simple ceremony in Cagayan de Oro. The funeral mass, presided by
Fr. Jojo Magadia SJ, Provincial Superior, was held at the Immaculate Conception Chapel of
Xavier University. Fr. Cal was buried at the Jesuit cemetery in Manresa in the presence of his
closest friends, companions in the Society of Jesus, and Xavier University faculty, staff and
students. He was well-loved by many in XU.
Fr. Cal entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1949 and was ordained a priest on
June 16, 1962. He served as University chaplain for 13 years, from 1999-2012. He also taught
Religious Studies from 2006-2008 and was the Loyola House Treasurer from 2002-2006.
In October 2011, Fr Cal was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. He passed away at the age of
81.

~Coach Francis “Dutch” Howlan ‘43~
Athletic Director ~ Manager ~ Coach ~ Instructor ~ Mentor
St. Mary’s Gaels & Bishop Scully Mohawks
Francis A. Howlan, Jr., also known as “Dutch” by all of Amsterdam, attended St. Mary’s
Institute from 1938 to 1943. While here, he played varsity basketball and baseball for
Coach Alex Isabel. After graduating from St. Mary’s Institute, Dutch enlisted in the
United States Navy to defend his country during World War II. Dutch played for the
Miami University varsity basketball team in Oxford, Ohio while in Naval Radio Training
school. He served nineteen months in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in
1946 from the Navy as a Radioman Third Class. After returning home, Dutch attended
college Manhattan college receiving a B.S. in Physical Education , and went on to
Wagner College taking classes towards his Master’s Degree while living and working on
Staten Island as a Recreation Director and Physical Education Instructor at the Willowbrook State School. Dutch
finally earned his Master’s Degree in Education from the State University of New York at Albany. Upon learning of the sudden passing of coach Alex Isabel, Dutch’s former coach and Athletic Director at SMI, Dutch
contacted Fr. Walsh and was hired to run the Athletic Department, coach and teach other academic courses.
Dutch coached at SMI until the high school closed in June of 1966 to make way for the opening of Bishop Scully
High School in September. Looking ahead, Dutch started a football program in the Fall of 1965 to ready his
players for the gridiron that he would build alongside the new Bishop Scully High School. His team would go on
to win multiple titles in the Pioneer Conference as Head Football coach at Scully High. Coach Howlan compiled
a win-loss record of 468-235 during his 34 1/3 years coaching varsity basketball at SMI and Bishop Scully,
giving him a winning percentage of .666, ranking him the 6th among the all-time winning coaches in Section II
history. This ranked him 21st among the all-time winning coaches in New York State high school basketball
history! Dutch’s SMI Gaels and Bishop Scully Mohawks collected 15 league championships, 2 regular season
1st place ties, 4 Eastern New York Catholic High School Division One Championships, a Section II Class B
Championship, a Capital Conference Inter-sectional Championship and 4 Christmas Holiday Tournament
Championships. In 1982, when Coach Howlan was nearing his 400th win, the students, faculty and staff honored
him by naming the Scully High Gym, “Howlan Hall”. Dutch sat and posed for several art students as they
painted the school’s mascot, a Mohawk Indian Chief in full head-dress regalia, with his profile upon the wall located in the corner of the gym. Coach Howlan retired for his Athletic Director and varsity basketball coach for
Bishop Scully in June of 1987. Just two years after retiring, Coach Howlan suffered cardiac arrest while on
vacation with his family. He is survived today by his wife Marion (Traskas) Howlan, son, Francis Howlan,III,
daughter Mary Kate (James) Lomanto and grandchildren, Andrew, Katherine, Nick, Peter and Maria.

~St. Mary’s Parish - Holy Names Society Essay Contest ~
Congratulations to SMI’s 8th grade
student Adam Tatun for entering and
winning the 2012 Holy Names Society
essay contest. Adam was honored by
St. Mary’s Parish Holy Name
Society during Catholic Schools Week
Liturgy. After being congratulated by
SMI Alumnus Mr. Michael Schuttig ’65,
on behalf of the Holy Names Society,
Adam read his essay to the whole
student body after Liturgy.
Below is Adam’s essay he submitted:
St. Mary’s Institute, otherwise known as “SMI” or St. Mary’s” to me and my fellow students, is a
school that is not easily comparable to any other school. I had realized that on the first day that I had visited
St. Mary’s.
During Fun Day 2007, the day I shadowed Mr. Smullen’s third-grade class, I knew that I would like
to attend this school the following year, and so I did. The easiest and best transition I have ever made was
from the over-crowed public school classes to the much smaller and friendlier St. Mary’s classes.
My first day at St. Mary’s had been full of shock and awe at [that] I fit in right away. The school had
a great learning atmosphere. The school seemed to run daily activities a lot better than any other school I had
ever been to.
All the teachers and students were very inviting and did not exclude me because I was the new
student. My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Baird, had a great sense of humor and would answer any questions on
the material that she was teaching. She found ways to keep me and other students interested in subjects that
are sometimes known to be boring, such as science, social studies, cursive writing and even spelling!
One of the greatest differences that I have found between public school teachers and St. Mary’s
teachers is that St. Mary’s teachers really care. If you are having difficulty in a subject of a concept of that
subject, that teacher will help you one-on-one. The teachers here are willing to stay after school or have
lunch with you, if you are struggling with a subject.
A lot of teachers are involved with at least one sport, club or other extracurricular activity. Many of
the teachers at St. Mary’s also try to show the students the importance of giving back to the community
through various activities and organizations, such as the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Pennies for Peace,
Catholic Charities, and Funds for Fine Arts. The teachers are a great influence on me and the other students,
and I think that is very swell.
Another benefit I get for coming to St. Mary’s is that I get to speak about my religion openly and
frequently. It is great to be able to proclaim my faith in God in the middle of the school day. I’m truly glad
that I can say “under God” when I recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I am also glad that I can take an active
part during the liturgies in the school. St. Mary’s Institute is very religious and holy.
I feel that I have forgotten something, but I suppose that is because St. Mary’s is so unique that I cannot fully explain what it means to me in one short paper.
As I sit in the back of Mrs. Bartyzel’s classroom, I am also having difficulty coming up with a title for
this. I presume I can simply call it, “St. Mary’s,” or “The Greatest School,” or a combination of both. It is
nearly impossible to sum up how I feel about my school in a couple words for a title, but here goes my best
shot.

Sr. Agnes Clare Vitale celebrates 75th Jubilee
St. Mary's Parish in Amsterdam recently honored Sister Agnes Clare Vitale, a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement, for 40 years of
service in Amsterdam and her 75th Jubilee in religious life. She is still in active ministry. Thank you to
Mr. Robert Going ‘66-9, and his wife, Mary, for conducting and submitting this interview for the newsletter.
It's just another day at work for Sister Agnes Clare as she moves a few things around on her desk
at the Faith Formation Office here at St. Mary’s Institute to prepare for this interview. Sr. Agnes has
been teaching and directing catechetics in Amsterdam for the better part of the last forty years, a major portion of her life as a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement which has now moved past the 75 year
mark. Sr. Agnes was sixteen going on seventeen when she entered the convent right out of St. Edmund Academy in Brooklyn (then a high school for girls) and made her vows in 1937. "It was a great
missionary age," she explains. When she was but fourteen, she took to heart an inscription placed in
the front of her classroom by one of the nuns (the Domincan Sisters of Sparkill): "And these shall follow the Lamb
whithersoever He goeth." That small quote from the biblical book of Revelation inspired her life: "I wanted to be there
when the saints go marching in," she chuckles. Sr. Agnes began picking up literature for religious orders, a brochure
from the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement caught her eye. “The harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few,” it
said. Here was an order that needed her, she decided. She particularly was taken by their charisma of seeking unity
among Christians.
Sister Agnes served her novitiate at Graymoor in Garrison, NY, just north of Peekskill. She served briefly in
Morrisonville, NY, near Plattsburgh, teaching kindergarten to children of a French-speaking community, and then
received her first major assignment to a convent in Wales. She never made it. War had broken out, and plans to go over
on the Queen Mary were canceled when the cruise ship became part of the fleet of Great Britain. So they took another
ship, this one to Mussolini's Italy, following the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. Her parents had come from Italy. At
night from their porch overlooking the Mediterranean, they could see the lights of Malta. But Sister Agnes had grown
up American and her command of the Italian language was at best, minimal. On the train from Naples to Rome, a man
tried to enter the compartment where she was reserving seats for the other sisters. He ignored her broken protest that
the seats were occupied, until another Italian man sharing the compartment picked him up and threw him out bodily.
“Pax tecum!” Sister Agnes called out after him. Their convent had yet to be built when the arrived in Rome. The
property itself belonged to the Vatican and Pope Pius XII had taken a special interest in assisting them. Conditions
were primitive. Until their convent was completed, the four nuns shared a one-room apartment with a tiny kitchen,
cooking on charcoal fires. The Mother Superior, from Scotland, knew less Italian than Sister Agnes, so relied on her to
tell a woman who sought their help not to worry, that she was just a little weak. Loosely translated back into English,
Sister Agnes told her, "Mother says, do not worry. You are just a little devil.”
It was a section of extreme poverty, and at their first Christmas, she experienced for the first time hordes of people
coming to them came to the sisters begging for food; some bread, pasta, an occasional sausage. Before long, events
overcame plans and they became a center for the care of war orphans, who were arriving in ever-increasing streams.
Food and water were scarce. There were no linens to be found for the army cots they used, so they walked to the
Vatican to get material to make their own, formerly used as yellow and white papal banners. Nearly all the children
were sick, coming from bombed-out cities and concentration camps. They were emotional wrecks, not old enough to
have a clue as to what was happening to their worlds. The Vatican established a medical clinic for them, treating a
thousand people at a time for typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis and malaria and other deadly diseases. The doctor was an
Austrian Jewish woman who had been made a citizen of the Vatican and was allowed to travel freely (and bravely) outside the walls.
"Pope Pius XII was a saint," Sister confirms without reservation. She met him when they first came over, sharing an
audience with the King and Queen of Italy. "Long live the Pope!" she tried to say in Italian.. "Long live the mush!" is
what she said to the Pope. (La pappa" instead of il Papa).
Three children arrived from Montecassino with their mother. There was no room, no food, no medicine. "You’ll
have to tell them to find somewhere else," the beleaguered Superior told Sister Agnes. "If you don't take my children,
I will kill myself," the mother told Sister. The children were barefoot, wearing only night shirts, their bodies covered
with lice-infested sores. Recalling the story of the Good Samaritan, Sister Agnes "requisitioned" precious olive oil
from the kitchen to treat the children's sores. She hid them for a full week finding wooden benches for them to sleep on.
"I decided I would wait until the Superior was in a good mood before telling her." One of the children died of
tuberculosis and was laid in a potters field. Years later, surviving orphans took up a collection to buy a headstone to
replace the number she had been buried under. The mother was never seen again.
The convent had been built with a neighborhood bomb shelter, at the direction of the Mussolini government.
According to Sister Agnes, the first place in Rome to be bombed was their convent. They were near an anti-aircraft
emplacement that had been harassing the British reconnaissance planes, and one plane that was hit dropped its bombs
as a safety precaution, not deliberately, as Rome was treated by all sides as an open city. Sister, being Sister, had snuck
24
Sister Agnes continued:
out of the shelter to get a good night’s sleep in her own bed when the fireworks broke out. Her Superior came running
into her room to get her out. When Sister Agnes bent over to pick up her sandals, a blast knocked both of them into the
hall, and the bed where she had been sleeping moments earlier lay under a pile of rubble.
Each day, she would walk to the Vatican for bread, passing through German Gestapo who were guarding the entrances. Not once did anyone suspect she was an American citizen, The revelation which could have proved exceedingly dangerous for her. At times, she even went face to face with the Germans when they demanded the use of the
convent for their soldiers. She would point to the sign indicating that this was considered extraterritorial sovereign
Vatican land, and it worked. And she rarely returned to the convent with any bread, as starving Romans would entreat
her for a crust all the way home.
Then the aqueducts were bombed and the municipal water supply ended. They would find people with wells and
haul the water back to the convent, untreated water that led to widespread dysentery. On June 5, 1944, the American
Army liberated Rome. "It was a wonderful day! They were all drunk!" Sister Agnes recalled. No water, all they could
drink was wine, and the people of Rome were only too willing to share what they had. Sister remembers the joyous
faces of the children outside of St. Peter’s, ridding on the shoulders of the GI’s, learning the delights of chewing gum.
Later, the sisters would take the children for recreation to the beaches at Anzio, where Germans and Americans had
fought for months. The sisters would check the beach for unexpended ordinance, and every now and then, the children
would stumble upon the shallow grave of a dead soldier. Sister Agnes remained in Rome after the war, teaching the
people how to vote, which greatly angered the Communists, who had been instructing illiterate the illiterate Italians that
their party symbol, a picture of Garibaldi with a beard, was St. Joseph.
Sister Agnes came down with tuberculosis herself, contracted from caring for the little girl she had hidden, which
laid her down for a year. She made a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Holy House of Loreto and personally witnessed
miraculous cures. But when she saw so many people worse off than herself, she refused to pray for a miracle. So
many others needed it so much more. Still, the miracle came and the disease disappeared. "I guess the Lord needed me
back in the vineyard."
Finally, in 1952, after thirteen harrowing years away, she returned home to America and saw her family for the first
time since she had almost sailed to Wales. A variety of domestic teaching assignments awaited her. One of the first was
at the Actor's Chapel in New York where Sr. Agnes helped educate the children in the cast of "The King and I." After
that it was Camden, New Jersey, then Schenectady and Schuylerville. One of the assignments brought her to Lake
Placid, where she played the organ for Sunday Mass. It was the early days of congregational hymn singing, and she
couldn’t help but notice that one of the parishioners was dominating the singing to such an extent that the others would
stop. "You're just going to have to tone it down. This singing is supposed to be for everyone. It's not a performance,"
she charitably admonished Kate Smith.
After a couple of other assignments, she came to Amsterdam as Superior of St. Michael’s convent, and, when her
term was up six years later, she coordinated the after-school catechetics city-wide, and, because the rules would not
permit her to stay at the convent where she had been the Superior, moved into her own apartment at highland Gardens,
where she remains to this day. In 1980, she became the CCD coordinator for St. Mary’s parish (now Faith Formation).
She trains the teachers, oversees the curriculum, harnesses volunteers, and always seems to find a way to make things
happen when it seems they can’t possibly happen.
“It’s been a very satisfying career,” she says, “I never worry about what dress I have to wear today,” Pretty clearly,
though, she doesn’t miss the ten pounds of wool habit that she used to wear in all kinds of weather, and which almost
sank her when she raced to rescue a drowning child in a river in Italy. She points to a battered wool fall jacket hanging
on the back of her office door. “It’s made from the cloth of my old habit,” she laughs. “I use it when I go pick apples.”
What advice would she give a young woman today? “It’s a wonderful vocation. It has a lot of challenges, but you
can be sure when the Lord calls you, He will say, ‘Come. Because I was hungry and you fed me; I was thirsty and you
gave me to drink; I needed knowledge and you helped me,’ and these are beautiful words that you’re going to hear
from the Lord. It’s very challenging, but it’s a close community and you’ll be very happy, and the sisters are very
caring and you’ll be taken care of and you’ll never have to worry about your future and you are working in the Lord’s
vineyard.”
On Saturday, June 16, 2012, Sister Agnes Clare Vitale returned to Graymoor on a beautiful summer day, to celebrate with her fellow jubilarians (three others celebrating seventy-five years with the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, and three more marking fifty). Together they processed into Mass; together they renewed their vows.
And together they sang, congregationally, the post-Communion hymn. Sister Agnes seemed a bit subdued, at first,
no doubt recalling her admonition to Kate Smith. Then the nun sitting next to her gave her an elbow, leaned over in
encouragement, and together they belted out: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

Montgomery County Camber of Commerce
Presented the 2012
The Young Professional Award
To
Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr.
“St. Mary’s Institute Principal, Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio was given the Young Professional Award for
“turning around” Amsterdam’s only Catholic school,” according to Mr. Peter Capobianco at the awards
dinner held at the River Stone Manor on January 27, 2012. Mr. Capobianco went on the say, “Catholic
schools are in trouble,” “People who want their children to go to a Catholic school not only have to pay
their taxes, but tuition, too, so they have to really want their kids to go there.” Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio,
Principal of St. Mary’s Institute since 2008 is the youngest Principal in the Albany Diocese and remains
the youngest in both Diocese and the area. Since his leadership, SMI has expanded the early childhood and
pre-kindergarten programs, making them one of the only full day programs in the community, stabilized
and has increased over all enrollment. Mr. Virgiglio inherited SMI, a school with a tradition of over 125
years in the community, after the much loved and dedicated principal, Sr. Elizabeth left her post of 15 years
to take on new endeavors.
The College of Saint Rose
Lally School of Education Prominent Alumni
Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr.
Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr. has been an educator in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany since 2003. A teacher at
St. Casimir School, Giovanni taught 3rd and 4th grade in the last remaining Catholic school in the Arbor Hill
Community in Albany’s inner-city. As principal at St. Mary’s Institute, he has shown incredible leadership and vision
for a young educator and professional. He has increased enrollment by more than 10% by cultivating student-centered
learning and an environment of perpetual improvement. His advancements include the creation of the first full day
early childhood in the Amsterdam community, and a partnership with The Jordan Family Foundation, affording
students access to advancements in science and technology including an LED message center, a solar paneled roof,
SMART boards, and iPads.
A strong presence in the community, Giovanni’s leadership shone during one of the school’s most trying times. In
2011, an internal water main break affected over eighty percent of the building and forced the school to close for
several days. Originating in the school’s library, the break damaged the entire collection. Giovanni facilitated a
partnership with The College of Saint Rose and The Children’s Aid Foundation of Amsterdam, affording the school a
brand new library collection. Today, this calamity turned interior overhaul is a testament to the community’s embrace
for St. Mary’s.
Giovanni states the following about his profession: “As an educator committed to my craft, I believe it is my duty to
achieve the highest level of instructional advancement on behalf of the students entrusted to my care. The College
of Saint Rose afforded me access to great leaders, teachers, and pioneers in the field of education. A cornerstone in
the community, The College of Saint Rose is committed to evolving with the ever-evolving world of education. The
Saint Rose Difference made me who I am today- an instructional leader promoting an educational experience that
will prepare my students for a world filled with many splendid opportunities and exciting challenges.”

Throughout the years of Bishop Scully High School, the Scully faculty made the learning experience a unique
one. They accomplish this goal through dedication, patience, and understanding. The teachers of Bishop
Scully strived to establish a close rapport with the students, and they were always willing to spend extra time
with those students who needed additional help. The faculty and staff were truly an invaluable and essential
part of the students lives. A questions posed in the Bishop Scully 1983 yearbook proves the sound advice
faculty and staff members offered to students, “Do you have any words of advice for B.S.H.S. students?”
“Don’t be afraid to be good.”…”Learn to do your best”…”Study (it will be worth it), yet have fun (‘cause
this is the time to do it), find a balance because both are important!” ...Be kind, sympathetic, and help one
another.”… “Be the best you can and be happy!”…”When it’s 4th and 10 –go for it-’cause you have nothing
to lose!”…”Plan ahead!”.. “Get a job!”///”Wake up to the advantages you have!”…”Never choose a path
just because its easiest. The path of least resistance probably lacks electricity, too. Be brave, ask questions,
live...don’t just exist!”…”Listen!! “Be what you have the potential of being –be responsible not only for
yourself but for your neighbor—let the memories of yourself which you leave behind you be good ones.”
