TO OUR FRIENDS
2004 -2005 HIGHLIGHTS
Securing the resources needed for a non-profit community hospital and undertaking projects to ensure quality
health care for the people of Huntingdon County can be challenging. Sustaining them in a stressed and uncertain
health care environment is difficult; and for many small, rural hospitals, it is impossible.
478 donors made gifts to the Foundation between July 1, 2004
and June 30, 2005
Whether you responded to a phone call, a letter, or an invitation to a special event like our golf tournament, you
enthusiastically supported the health of your community.Your combined commitment to J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital Foundation has raised more than $218,000 in the last year, including more than 580 gifts – an increase of
54% over 2003-2004 – so that the charitable mission of J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital could continue to enhance the
lives of our families and neighbors.
Netted more than $26,700 from the 7th Annual J.C. Blair Golf Tournament, which was
sponsored for the first time in 2005 by J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation following six
successful golf events hosted by The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair
Kicked off “The Power of One” – J.C. Blair’s Employee
Annual Giving Campaign and raised nearly $8,000 with 20%
employee participation
As J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation celebrates its second year of activities, it is an honor and privilege for
me to present this annual report to say thank you and to bring you up to date on the many projects that you have
helped the Foundation accomplish. Projects like the new Mammography System with Computer-Aided Detection,
new bassinettes in the Maternity Department, LifePak Defibrillators, new vital signs monitors and the replacement
of other aging equipment vital to patient care make a difference and have brought new awareness to the
importance of supporting efforts to improve our community hospital.
Held a Dedication Ceremony and Open House in May to introduce the community to J.C.

AT J . C . B L A I R
Last year, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation began a campaign to
raise $90,000 for an additional mammography system. The Auxiliary to J.C.
Blair soon made a gift to kick off the effort. It wasn’t long after that the J.
Melvin and Beulah Isett Community Foundation stepped forward to issue a
matching gift challenge to the community. Individuals, businesses, and
organizations responded to that challenge and the need to improve access
to mammography service. In April, 2005, J.C. Blair, its employees, and its
patients, welcomed a new mammography system and opened a calming
exam room in the Radiology Department. A plaque outside the
Mammography Suite permanently honors the generosity of the donors
who made it possible.
J.C. Blair is the only provider of mammography in Huntingdon County.
Until the addition of a second mammography system, a woman had to wait
from four to five months for a screening mammogram appointment. This
additional piece of equipment, as well as the accompanying Computer Aided
Detection system which will enhance the radiologist’s ability to more accurately diagnose breast cancer at its earliest stages, allows J.C. Blair to
offer premier mammography service to the women of Huntingdon County.

T H U R S D AY, M AY 1 2 , 2 0 0 5
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital is blessed to serve a community that can
be counted on for support. Our community came through in a big
way this past year in support of the
Hospital’s mammography program.
The Hospital is also blessed to
have the technologists, radiologist,
surgeon, oncologist and the
technology that, together, are able
to diagnose and treat breast cancer
early so that we can continue to
save lives.
There’s no doubt that the treatment
of breast cancer can be arduous.
But the earlier the cancer is found, the less difficult the treatment.
And strides are being made every day in clinical research trials to
find the most appropriate treatments for specific stages and grades
of breast cancer.
A mammogram is not something to be feared. With the new
technology, done regularly, along with breast exams, breast cancer
can be detected at its earliest stages and can be beaten.
To all who contributed to the mammography fund drive, thank you
for your generosity in helping J.C. Blair maintain the highest level of
diagnostic capabilities in the fight against breast cancer.
We ask that you become an advocate for early detection of breast
cancer. Remind your friends, family and neighbors who are at risk
to use the new technology – to call their doctor, schedule a
mammogram, and make the commitment to be screened regularly.
It could save their lives!
We gratefully recognize and acknowledge these donors who generously contributed
nearly $140,000 to enhance the healthcare of women at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital.

FOR GOLF
Thirty foursomes beat the heat on Wednesday, August 3, 2005,
with rounds of golf under the day’s high temperature of 95˚ at
Standing Stone Golf Club in Huntingdon. The 7th Annual Golf
Tournament was hosted by J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital
Foundation for the first time in 2005 following six successful golf
events hosted by The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair. The golf
tournament is the Foundation’s signature fundraising event
for the hospital.
This year’s tournament featured 121 players, 34 volunteers, and 88 sponsors. Participants enjoyed a full day including lunch, a round of
golf, dinner, and an awards program. The golfers took part in many challenging skill events including closest-to-the-pin, longest drive,
and longest putt; plus friendly competitions new to the tournament like Move Up to the Ladies’Tee on #1 and Huntingdon
Gastroenterology’s Surgery Shot on #17.The Golf Tournament netted more than $26,700 for J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, which will
be used to purchase a washer/sterilizer for J.C. Blair’s Central Processing Department. The equipment provides the necessary and
required cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of medical and surgical instruments vital to patient care.
The team of Barry Purdy, Chuck Streightiff, Joey Wible and Tim Rupert sponsored by The Mayor were the top
finishers in Division 1 with 27 points tallied using the Modified Stableford Scoring System. Following closely
with 25 points was the First Commonwealth Team of Robb Ritchey, Nick Gates, Lynn Lovell, and Steve
Huston. Winning first place in Division 2 with 19 points was MJEMs Photos represented by Mary Jane Smith,
Burgess Smith, Gerry Huggler, and Tom Kriznuski. Not far behind with 14 points was the Ferris Baker Watts
team of Garry Pote, Steve Martz, Dave Stiffler, and Roger Oswald. Prizes also were presented to the 7th place
winners in each division – in recognition of the tournament’s 7th year. Division 1 winners were NAC Corp
with Derek Ross, Martin Kyper III, Aaron Kaytl, and Travis Cramer. The team from Diamond Healthcare,
represented by Pam VanNatta,Tom Matthias, John Moran, and Carole Miller, took home the Division 2 honors.

ANNUAL GIVING
C A M PA I G N
J.C. Blair employees have the power to make a difference every day.
From each patient who is well cared for, to the programs and services
that routinely exceed quality measures, our employees make it happen!
And this past year, J.C. Blair employees put that same spirit to work
through The Power of One – J.C. Blair’s Employee Annual Giving
Campaign. Twenty percent of the Hospital’s employees took their
daily commitment as an employee one step further and made a
personal financial investment in J.C. Blair. The campaign raised nearly
$8,000 with employees contributing through payroll deduction or
by writing a check.
Employee Campaign Representatives in each department spread the
word and collected response envelopes from their coworkers in April
and May 2005. All employees who returned an Employee Annual
Giving form were eligible to win a DVD player donated by Park
Furniture & Appliance. The lucky winner was Tracey Noel, who
works in Central Registration.

SINCE 1912
The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital is a dedicated community volunteer
organization that supports J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and the people it serves. It
provides a vital link between the Hospital and the Huntingdon County community
through innovative programming, health education, community partnerships and
fundraising.
In 2004-2005, the Auxiliary donated $36,871 to help purchase the “Hugs Infant Security
System.” A small bracelet holds a security device to the ankle of the baby, monitoring the
whereabouts of the infant at all times. Any breach in the system immediately alerts the
staff, and the maternity ward locks down.
Projects and programs sponsored by The Auxiliary to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital include:
The Doorway Gift Shop
Baby Portraits and Spoons
Annual Charity Ball
J.C. Blair Employee Scholarships
Children’s Health Fair
J.C. Blair Care Bears
Patient TV Service
Hospital Lobby Sales
The Auxiliary welcomes men and women who want to support its charitable mission.

You have several options when making a gift to the Foundation. Contributions to J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital Foundation are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. The Foundation encourages unrestricted giving as the best way to secure the future of healthcare for the people of Huntingdon County
and enhance services at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital.
A Gift of Securities is a popular alternative to a cash gift because it actually saves taxes twice. You may
not only receive an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of your securities, but you also
avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation.
A Bequest is a simple way to leave a legacy to the Foundation. It is advantageous for you to
consider some advance planning with an attorney or other professional advisor and consider
naming J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation in your will. In many cases you can easily do this through a
simple amendment called a codicil; thus your entire will does not have to be redrafted.
Several Planned Gift options such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and life insurance each offer distinct advantages to the donor by allowing you to tailor your giving to meet your personal needs and achieve your financial goals.
legacy
A Gift of Real Estate or Personal Property offers tax advantages to donors. For example, a gift of personal property made during your lifetime entitles you to an income tax deduction and reduces taxes on
your estate.
SOCIETY
The 1911 Legacy Society honors a dedicated and special group of individuals. The Society was named for the founding year of J.C.
Blair Memorial Hospital and is comprised of those who have made a planned or estate gift to J.C. Blair. We gratefully acknowledge the
following friends who have made J.C. Blair a beneficiary in their estate plans.Their vision and generosity will help to assure that J.C.
Blair has the resources it needs to provide quality healthcare for Huntingdon County.

J.C. Blair in your estate plans and have not told us, please call the Foundation Office at (814) 643-8888.

TO GIVE
A Gift of Cash is the easiest and most direct way to give. Most of the gifts made to J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital Foundation are in the form of cash, through a check written by the contributor.

ways
A commemorative Gift from the Heart allows you to remember and honor those you love and the special
occasions in your life.
A Gift of Endowment sustains a program at J.C. Blair in perpetuity. Your gift is invested to
provide a steady stream of income in support of the Hospital with the restriction that the principal may
not be expended.
For more information about giving opportunities, please contact Susan McLaughlin, Executive Director,
at (814) 643-8888 or email [email protected].
