Whitcomb (49) passed away peacefully in his sleep June 3, 2009. Lawrence married Ruth (Burton) (48) Whitcomb in 1947 and graduated from Pasadena College in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in math and physics. He worked in aeronautical engineering at McDonnell Douglas, Lockheed Martin, and Magnavox, specializing in what became technology for global positioning. Lawrence served on the PLNU board of trustees for 20 years. He is survived by his wife; son, Michael (72) and his wife, Linda; daughter, Melinda (75) and her husband, Chris; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Darrel Gumm (51) passed away on June 7, 2009, of congestive heart failure. He lived a very good life of 87 years. Darrel’s strong commitment carried him well through this life and into the next. Darrel is survived by his wife, Joanne (Purkiser) (56); son Darrel (74) and his wife, Jane; son David (77) and his wife, Paula (Ghormley) (79); son Daniel (80) and his wife, Beth; and many grandchildren. Born in Pasadena, her family moved to Oroville, Calif., where she lived the next 77 years. Ruth and Alfred (51) married in August 1951. They raised four children: Brenda (pref. 83), Joe (76), Bill (76), and Harold (78). Her family grew into a strong legacy group with many of her twelve grandchildren attending PLNU and two great-grandchildren perhaps on their way. Ruth taught for 25 years in the Oroville Unified School District. She was active in the Church of the Nazarene. Ruth is survived by her immediate family and her sister, Leona Ransbarger. Ernie graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Pasadena College and was senior class president. Ernie was a lifelong educator, enjoying the youth in his community. He taught in the classroom, served as principal for multiple schools, and retired from the school district as director of elementary curriculum. Staying connected with PLNU, Ernie served on the Alumni Association Board and Sports Associates Board. He also led the Class of ’50 Endowed Scholarship for students in graduate education.
