Where Do The

At Home With Angelique
Photos by: Andrea Shilling – www.familyartphotography.com
Written by: Amy Dwyer
With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, we set out to honor local fun-loving,
free-spirited mom, Angelique Lorence.
Mom to Rocco (7), Roman (5) and
Mario (2), wife to Brian, blogger and
renovation expert, Angelique Lorence
has managed it all with great success.
A Pittsburgh native, Angelique moved to
the Sewickley area while attending Robert
Morris University. During college she
worked alongside the owners of the former
Bailey and Bailey Boutique. “I wanted
to take it over, but then I had a family,”
recalls Angelique. Craving a community,
Angelique recounts her early days as a
mom: “I used Facebook as an outlet to chat
with other moms … they were received as
being funny, so I continued.” With husband Brian in advertising and marketing,
the transition to blogging seemed simple,
and “Where the Piggy Toes Go,” a lifestyle
blog (www.thepiggytoes.com), was born.

Upon moving to Sewickley, deciding on a house proved difficult.
Brian wanted land, Angelique the ability to walk to the Village.
The Holdship house in Glen Osborne, built in 1820, seemed a
perfect fit. “I hit the driveway and thought: this would be ours?!
I knew this was a big undertaking.” As the lease on their rental
expired in 60 days, a new idea was born of renovating the house
in 60 days. Angelique documented the journey on her blog
under the caption “60-Day-Farmhouse.” Immediately upon
closing, the Lorences dashed to the new property to start demolition. With only one previous house flip under their belt, the
Lorences got busy, learning tricks on YouTube. “We made fast
decisions,” admits Angelique. “You have to be a quick thinker;
you have to know what you like and get it done.”
When asked what she is most proud of regarding these endeavors, she beams proudly: “My husband. He’s a rock star. When I
think he can’t impress me anymore, he impresses me. He is such
a go-getter and a hard worker.” With the renovations complete,
Angelique embarked on a new endeavor with her blog by offering custom-designed products for sale. A soft launch in February
proved successful, selling out in 13 hours with six locally made
products, including necklaces, t-shirts and clutches. “Not only are
you shopping local through me, a lot of my shop items are locally
made.” Each item comes lovingly packaged by Angelique her-
We Capture Your Precious Moments
self. “It’s all about the packaging,” says Angelique. “You must feel
loved when you get these items I’ve worked so hard to make!”
So where does this ambitious, hard-working mom see herself
in five years? “I would love to have a store here; I want it to be
a mix of your life,” says Angelique. “A lot of bloggers choose
one direction … I never wanted to talk about one thing … so I
decided to be a lifestyle blogger … family, recipes, fashion, home
décor … It would be great for a woman to go into a store and
purchase items for her life, not just for one purpose.”

Lunch includes a choice of two soups, salad, homemade bread
and choice of beverage. Dessert is a highlight – home baked
cookies. While the Christy House is a natural venue for women
to share lunch, men are more than welcome and are offered
refills on soup for their bigger appetites. A children’s menu is
also available, and lunches are available for take out. Menus
change weekly and are posted outside the house and online. All
of the food is prepared from scratch by two professional chefs
with a team of volunteer kitchen staff, servers, and bakers.

Every Friday Can Be
Mother’s Day At The Christy House
Written by Letty Savage
In many families taking mom out to lunch for Mother’s Day is
a tradition usually celebrated at a restaurant on the holiday. The
Christy House in Sewickley offers an interesting alternative to
this tradition, especially if the mother in question would enjoy
the old-fashioned ambiance of a tea room.
Located at the corner of Frederick and Walnut Streets in
Sewickley, the Christy House will be celebrating Mother’s Day
on Friday, May 8, from 11:30 until 1:30. The tearoom is not a
traditional restaurant but a ministry of St. Stephen’s Church,
and all proceeds go to local and worldwide missions that serve
women and children. A card in the hallway of the house lists
missions supported in the past year.
NeighborhoodNews
May Sewickley Living
The house was built in 1862 and is named for George Christy,
a patent attorney for George Westinghouse, who lived there
with his wife and children. It later became the church rectory.
The building was to be demolished for a church expansion
when a group of churchwomen asked that it be spared so that
they could use it for a tearoom. Originally named the Crumpet, the Friday tearoom opened in 1979.
Today the house still retains many of its original Victorian features, including fireplaces and built-in cabinets that not only
appeal to old house fans but give the tea room an old-fashioned
ambiance. Friday lunches are served on linen covered tables
using floral and fresh flowers complement the décor.
In addition to lunch, visitors can treat mothers to a special gift
from one of the two volunteer-run gift shops. Upstairs, Earthly
Treasures features vintage items just waiting to be re-purposed
including a collection of handbags. Downstairs, Needles Eye
offers a creative collection of cute and affordable new items.

$5.00 for children. Reservations are not required but

The 10th Annual Recipe For Hope
Submitted by: Bonny Diver
Photos by: Ray Cordero – www.mainlinephotography.com
Serving Station with KDKA’s Dave Crawley
Rick Dayton, Chef Jason Capps and Kym Gable
The 10th Annual Recipe For Hope to support Hair Peace
Charities sure heated things up at the end of a brutally cold
February. More than 250 guests, many Sewickley friends,
enjoyed a variety of dishes served by 20 local celebrities at The
Mayernik Center on Camp Horne Road.
WPXI TV's Cara Sapida was surrounded by a crowd sampling
her Goat Cheese Pastry Puffs. "I love baking for Recipe For
Hope; I look forward to it all year! It gives me a chance to
show my pretend talent in the kitchen. Several people came
up to me this year and remembered what I have made in past
years! Made my night. It usually takes eight hours to make
250 desserts or appetizers, and that time is well worth the
great cause," Sapida said. Pretend? Cara was a runner up in
the National Pillsbury Bake-Off.
Connie and Ed Engler with Karen Reinsel
Hair Peace cancer survivor Liz Evans requested Atria's for her
favorite, Pot Roast Nachos. "We had the best nachos in town,"
said KDKA Radio's Bill Rehkopt with John Chamberlain a.k.a.
The Pittsburgh Blogger YaJagoff, who served in Liz's honor.
Celebrities had their choice of making 250 servings or teaming
with a professional to provide the dish. Wearing aprons were
celebrities from KDKA TV, WPXI TV, WTAE TV, WISH
99.7, WDVE, 3WS and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Monterey Bay Fish Grotto debuted Sinful Sushi Monterey Bay
Roll and Chocolate Guava Mousse Cake for the WPXI morning co-anchors Joe Arena and Katherine Amenta. "It's not a
contest but we go for bragging rights for the best dish of the
night and ours was amazing," smiled Arena.
Monterey Bay’s Chocolate Guava Mousse Cakes
Grazing and stargazing may have been the main attraction, but
bidding wars were hot for tickets and autographed Penguins,
Steelers and Pirates collectibles. Given that Sewickley is prime
horse country and many equestrian auction packages brought

Do you have a Lasting Legacy?
John Chamberlain, Linda Marty and Bill Rehkopf with Atria’s Team
Founder Bonny Diver-Hall credits the
night's huge success on a great group of
friends and volunteers including many
cancer survivors. "There are many special
events all going on at the same time for
worthy causes. I am thrilled to know our
community supports Hair Peace and the
work we do. We help local people in a real
way when money is tight. Cancer is expensive and buying a nice looking wig can be
difficult with co-pays, deductibles and time
off work. One woman said her 9 year-old
son told her to not come to his ball game
because she looked like an alien."

BUSINESS beat
Sewickley Confectionery
Born out of a hardworking farm boy
with wholesome values to serve the best
locally raised and sourced dairy and meat
products, Sewickley Confectionery is
everything Christian Bichsel dreamed of.
Many of you recognize the iconic cornerstone shop at Walnut and Beaver as
your go-to for cool ice cream treats or to
pick up fresh dairy products and bacon,
but Chris is constantly looking at how
to bring the best dairy products and now
beef to his varying client base.
This year he launched his “boxed beef,”
offering (primarily for his home-delivery
customers who buy shares of what is
raised, but you will find the remaining
in the store). His grass and grain-feed
beef cattle are raised locally on a nutrition regimen that Chris has adhered
to for many years. The cuts are thicker
custom butchered with large amounts of
marbling for the best flavor. The meat is
picked up, stored and delivered under the
proper refrigerated conditions that maintain USDA inspection certification.
The selection of cheeses and butters
continues to grow as well, with Chris
maintain strong ties to locally owned and
operated cheese houses and dairies, and
even a new organic Greek yogurt producer in the Strip District.
And, why stop there. You may also spot
a Sewickley Confectionery mobile icecream cart at local events and parties.
“We love being able to offer this unique
compliment to an event or fundraising
opportunity,” said Chris.
Whether you frequent Sewickley Confectionery’s store, are one of Chris’ home
delivery customers or in need of the
mobile ice-cream cart for an event, the
quality and service never waivers.
Chris lives by “Do the things that you like
and that you value and share it with others.”

All of their brands are designed to be very low maintenance for the
homeowner - typically just by washing off with a hose. Their furniture is designed to last for up to 30 years, and many pieces are customizable to whatever the customer wants. Patio Concepts works
individually with clients to meet specific needs – THIS is what sets
them apart. Much of their business is custom-order, special fabrics,
special finishes, pretty much whatever the customer wants, they do.
Custom orders can be delivered, as quickly as 2-4 weeks.
Patio Concepts outpaces big box and furniture stores by providing
the finest furniture and fire pits on the market. With unparalleled
customer service and attention to detail, CEO Bob Drescher
along with a very experienced staff, work one-on-one ensuring
they meet the unique tastes, needs and budget of each client.
Drescher, who has been in the industry for 20 years, explains,
“Our most popular fire pits are 42-48 inch diameter and frequently include a seating group with 4 ultra-comfortable swivel
rocking lounge chairs. Propane model fire pits with the instanton/instant-off feature are the most popular; and the granite and
aluminum finishes make the patio really stand out. The outdoor
room that includes a fire pit allows extended use of the patio –
longer into the evening and during the cooler seasons.
Patio Concepts features a broad selection of outdoor furniture
in resin wicker, and rustproof aluminum for outstanding lon-
gevity and superior comfort. Exclusive brands include: Summer Classics, Designing Fire, Cast Classics, Gensun, Cape
May Wicker, and Ratana. All brands offer outstanding value
and quality over a broad price spectrum. When it comes to
comfort - Patio Concepts excels!
Bob's advice to the customer is: "This is a 'people' business see what's out there and let our knowledgeable staff help you
navigate through the options. Look at and sit in the furniture;
see if it is comfortable BEFORE you buy it. Let us earn your
business; if you want an outstanding selection with a broad
choice of fabric, we've got it covered! "

SPRINGTIME IN THE VILLAGE!
WE LOVE IT!
Sewickley buzzes with activity in the springtime. A fitness
class and the Farmer’s Market at St. James are a perfect start
to a sunny Saturday morning, followed by brunch and browsing the shops. There are lots of outdoor play options, thanks to
all of the scenic parks in the area.
There’s no shortage of community events in May, either. The
“unofficial” kickoff to the season and celebration of all things
bright is the Sewickley Civic Garden Council’s Annual May
Mart on Saturday, May 9th, which also happens to be Mother’s
Day Weekend. Be sure to make your brunch or dinner reservations with Mom at one of the fantastic restaurants in Sewickley!
and are serving our country in the armed forces. Organized
by the Sewickley Memorial Day Committee, the weekend
begins on Friday, May 22nd with an official flag retirement
ceremony and patriotic music at Wolcott Park, followed by a
“Celebration of Service” display of fireworks. BYO blankets or
chairs to watch from Broad Street!
Memorial programs will also be held on Saturday May 23rd
and Sunday May 24th. The weekend culminates with the
124th Annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25th at
10:00am. It’s one of the oldest parades in the nation, and the
Sewickley community is very proud of it.
Before we go, we have just one more announcement. Explore
Sewickley will officially be moving to our new, new home at 418
Beaver Street in the upcoming weeks! Déjà vu, right? We know.
The way we look at it: We’re enthusiastically part of Sewickley’s
exciting development. To follow our progress, make sure you’re
getting our newsletter. Sign up at www.ExploreSewickley.com.
Also in May is the 6th Annual Sewickley Unleashed Pet Parade
and 5K – a benefit for our fabulous friends at the Western
Pennsylvania Humane Society. That’s on Saturday, May 16th
from 9am – 3pm, and you can find out more information by visiting www.SewickleyUnleashed.org.
Closing out the month of events is Memorial Day Weekend,
a humbling celebration of the brave veterans who have served
So, here’s to spring and to a flourishing community. Check out
some of the new stores and restaurants that have opened in town,

Where form meets functionality
Wichman Landscape
Construction promises
to provide an exceptional product and an
exceptionally pleasant
experience.
Wichman Landscape
Construction specializes in nine specific types of Paver and natural stone installation projects: Blue stone Patios, Walkways, Natural Sandstone
Retaining Walls, Stairs, Fire Pits, Outdoor Kitchens, Paving
stone Driveways, and Pools.
Owner Jeff Wichman talks about his business:
"I started the business in 2003 focusing on lawn care maintenance.
In the beginning I focused on growing the lawn care side of the
business, but I always had the idea of expanding into the stonework side of landscape construction; by 2005 I began to make the
transition. I sold off the lawn care side of the business to a local
company and put all of my energy into growing the landscape
construction side. As the demand for our work grew we continually added more equipment and more personnel. Currently we run
two hardscape crews, and one landscape enhancement crew that
focuses on plant material installation, and maintenance.
Aspects of our business that separates us from the competition
are that we have the ability to create a full 3D walk-through
design of any project; we have a full time estimator, and a real
time data collection system that allows us to produce detailed
estimates with in a day of meeting with a customer.
If you're interested in a new landscape construction project feel

The Village Theater Company (VTC),
aims to present films suitable for a wide
audience in the Sewickley area with a goal
of building and operating a motion picture theater in Sewickley. VTC proudly
announces “Vanguard Theater” as the
name of the theater soon to be built, with
construction at the Walnut Street location
commencing in the summer of 2015.
On Thursday, May 7, 2015 the VTC will
be hosting a fundraiser at the Atlas Brewing House in Lawrenceville, followed by a
movie screening of the film The Rise and
Rise of Bitcoin by Nick and Dan Mross
of Sewickley at Rowhouse Cinema, also
in Lawrenceville. Doors open at 5:30
p.m., followed by a discussion with the
Mross brothers and financial leaders Sean
Sebastian and David Becker. All proceeds will go to VTC.
Nick, a filmmaker, has worked on several independent films, including Riddle
with Val Kilmer. Recalls Nick, “In 6th
grade my parents bought me a camera.
It was the best gift I ever got.” Brother
Dan took a different path, pursuing a
career in computer science. An online
video on new technology mentioned a
concept called Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency,
which projected Bitcoin as something
that “could replace the dollar.” A data-
base administrator for most of his career,
Dan viewed Bitcoin as a new database
technology that did not exist before. “It’s
about trust,” explained Dan. “Instead of
trusting a central party or authority, it’s
a decentralized system; there is no third
party trust in order for the system to
function.” Dan likens the idea of Bitcoin
to the basic trust surrounding money:
“Everyone agrees money is valuable
because it’s backed by the issuers of currency. It’s about that trust; that the paper
money has redeemable value and other
people agree. Bitcoin has digital tokens
called bitcoins, which are sent around
in the system. On their own, they are
worthless like the paper dollar; however,
the system is programmed in that the
rules of the system cannot be broken; the
system becomes very trustworthy.”
A documentary on Bitcoin was the perfect union for this unlikely pair. Nick
was interested in the subject matter, while
Dan wanted to explain a technical topic.
Per Nick, “It was fun to dive into that
world while wearing an objective hat all
the while. At the time, Dan was one of
the true Bitcoin players. He deserved
to be a character in the documentary on
this.” Combined with Ben Bledsoe and
Patrick Lope, the project became much
larger. The film premiered at the Tribeca
film festival last spring, followed by a
release on iTunes. Recently, the film also
launched on Amazon Prime.
When asked about the future of Bitcoin,
Dan offers this: “The metaphor is that
the internet changed communication …
Bitcoin is the financial extension of this
disruption. Banking systems/currencies
are evolving over millennia, but ownership/money will change now, using the
internet as a base with Bitcoin as a money system; the internet of money.” For
more information on the film or Bitcoin
itself, visit bitcoindoc.com.
