Year after year, through the commitment of volunteers and donors, support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, and community, government and private foundations, we are able to be the first to respond to individuals and families facing challenges in their lives. While we continued delivering vital programs and services, last year we were able to create even more impact, as many of you also stepped up to provide opportunities that made a significant difference and enhanced the lives of those we support. For the student who received a special gift from a donor to cover the cost of her tuition for post-secondary education, this opportunity not only means a path to a better future, but also less financial and emotional stress on her and her family. For the senior who received a “top up” for monthly food vouchers, those extra funds meant that he was able to purchase eggs and meat – protein that he needs – but often is unable to, due to financial hardships. For clients living with mental health issues the opportunity to visit the Vancouver Art Gallery or attend the Chutzpah! Festival meant feeling less isolated and a chance to participate in culturally enriching experiences. For the father who could not secure gainful employment in order to provide for his family, comprehensive employment coaching meant he was well prepared for interviews, giving him the confidence to succeed in finding gainful employment. For the family who struggles with a difficult home life with their at-risk youth, each counselling session meant being one step closer to building a more positive and strong relationship with their child and ultimately reducing the risk of suicide. The list goes on and on. When people first come to JFSA, they may be facing temporary or long-standing challenges in their lives. The role of our agency has always been to ensure that they find the support that they need to move forward. This edition of Family Matters features stories of triumph and examples of how you have helped empower lives in our community. We thank you for your on-going support and commitment and look forward to sharing more such stories with you this coming year. It is an opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate our timehonoured traditions. But for those individuals and families who face daily hardships making ends meet, it is often even more challenging. In August, Syd Shafron, a long-time friend of JFSA, approached the agency to make a special gift for Rosh Hashana because he wanted to make a difference in the lives of those who struggle with hunger. On a monthly basis, our agency distributes food vouchers to those in need. Through the Annette Shafron Memorial Fund, Syd made the decision to provide families in need with voucher “top ups” totalling $10,000. Families who were the beneficiaries ranged from single parents, to couples with 2-4 children. “It breaks my heart to know that there are children in our community who do not have enough to eat,” says Syd. A few years ago, one evening when Syd was having a lavish dinner at the home of a friend, he and the guests reflected on the evening. “Here we all were, eating well, with lots of food…and there are Jews out there that cannot afford basic needs”. That evening he went home and started thinking about what he could do to help. The idea came to him to establish a fund at JFSA, in memory of his wife, Annette, who passed away in 2008. Syd’s dollars would go to support those who needed the Jewish Food Bank and food vouchers. Annette (z’l) touched so many lives, was a woman of strong principle, and lived her life with persistence, grace, and a tremendous sense of wit and humour. She showed unconditional love to her family and friends. Together, she and Syd had two children, Michael and Melissa, who they raised in a home with strong Jewish values. Values that included Ma’akhil R’eivim - feeding those who are hungry, and Someikh Noflim – supporting those in adversity. “It was fitting to establish this fund in her memory.” Thank you to Syd Shafron for establishing this fund and for this special contribution. Annette Shafron (z’l) 4 5 outreach counselling Sharing Jewish Identities: Supporting LGBTQ Youth: Children from the Tri-Cities head to Camp Shalom Alan Stamp, MSc, PCFTTA For youth, coming out as gay, lesbian, or transgendered can become an experience fraught with potential rejection, fear, hatred, danger and violence. As a result, gay and lesbian youth are 4 times more likely to consider suicide as compared to their heterosexual peers. Such youth face significant social, peer, cultural and political pressures that can affect their emotional well-being. Twenty years ago, I provided an Art Therapy seminar at Britannia Community Center for what I thought would be a handful of gay and lesbian youth. Over 40 youth crowded the room that night; many were still in their early teens. When a large portion of the youth had come out to their parents, they were told that they were no longer welcome in the family. Thus, approximately 75% were living in shelters, on friends’ couches, in the streets and in even more dire situations. Many of the youth that night drew art that reflected their fears, worries, despair and pain of having been rejected by their families, bullied in school and unwelcome in their broader community. This past summer, Jewish Family Service Agency, the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, the Burquest Jewish Community Association and Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver teamedup to create a new summer camp outreach program for youth aged 5-12. This was part of an initiative with the Jewish Family Resource Network ( JFRN). For one week, 21 children commuted from the Tri-Cities to JCCGV’s Camp Shalom with the help of a school bus provided through the program. JFRN was created to assist families living in the Tri-Cities area with basic needs, to direct them to existing services, as well as help connect them to each other so that they may build a stronger community. “My daughter came home every day with a massive smile on her face, talking excitedly about all the fun things she did at Camp Shalom,” explained one parent. “This outreach initiative was a huge success from my point of view and thank you all again for making my daughter’s camp experience such a memorable one!” The summer program was intended not only to provide youth with a new and exciting Jewish experience in their young lives, but also to establish a strong and healthy connection between Jewish families in the Tri-Cities and the Greater Vancouver Jewish community and its resources. Both the children and their parents enjoyed this wonderful experience and we have received an outpouring of positive feedback. Some youth may delay the coming out process until adulthood. Coming out is a life-long process mitigated by issues of safety and perceived levels of acceptance. However, recent research in the last 5 years is showing that LGBTQ youth are beginning to come out at younger ages – up to 7 years earlier, on average in North America. Service providers – therapists, social workers, youth workers, pastoral providers, teachers and others coming into professional contact with gay youth - require great awareness to the multiple forms of oppression that gay and lesbian youth may experience. Service providers must understand gay issues JFSA is proud to coand the possibility that the youth could have additionally sponsor “A Courageous internalized homophobia, making it more complicated to be Journey – One Family’s confident about their coming out process. Professionals working Struggle to Help Their with or in contact with youth can play a vital role in their lives. Teenage Son Come to Terms with His Sexuality”, featuring author, John Schwartz, on Sunday November 24 5:00p.m. at the Jewish Book Festival. Alan Stamp, will be speaking about the different ways JFSA supports youth workers and LGBTQ in the community. Please join us to learn more! We could not be more pleased with the results and we look forward to many more smiling faces next summer! The Jewish Family Network Program is generously funded through a three-year grant from the Women’s Endowment Fund through the JCF. 6 7 seniors Employment Putting Our Community to Work DID YOU KNOW? • L ast year, Employment Counsellors spent 1,820 hours helping 150 clients seek employment •W e help 80% of our clients find employment within 3-6 months For JFSA’s Employment Services department, success means putting their clients to work – helping them take the right steps that will lead them to find jobs in their desired career path. Enabling community members to find sustainable, meaningful and gainful employment is one of our agency’s most important areas of focus. Our Employment Counsellors work with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds, with most falling into one of three groups: Young Canadians Newcomers 55+ Who they are How JFSA helps • In their 20s and 30s • Familiar with local customs and quite proficient in English and technology • Recently completed schooling and earned credentials • Find it difficult to find employment (especially fulltime) in their chosen career • Slow economic recovery has brought a decrease in job prospects for this generation • R ésumé building lessons • Interview skills development •A ssistance in networking • Hailing from Israel, South America, Mexico and Eastern Europe • O ften hold extensive experience in their home countries, along with impressive credentials • L anguage and cultural barriers, along with a lack of foreign credential recognition can make it difficult for them to find gainful employment •G roup workshops on job hunting and employment skills • C onfidence building •A ssistance understanding Canadianstyle interviews and job policies • R eferals to resources that will help them evaluate their existing credentials for placement in the Canadian workforce •H elp finding introductory jobs in their profession, to sustain them while they complete the required upgrade training • Financial difficulties necessitate continued employment into their older years A Provincial Response to Keeping Seniors at Home Better at Home is a new provincial government initiative that helps seniors remain in their own homes through the provision of simple, non-medical support services. The United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM) manages the program, with local non-profit organizations providing the services. Through the Better at Home program, a lead nonprofit agency is identified for each Lower Mainland neighbourhood and given up to $100,000 annually, depending on needs, to deliver a “basket” of services. These include light housekeeping, transportation to appointments, light yard work, snow shoveling, grocery shopping and friendly visiting. Some are provided by paid staff, others through volunteers. The lead agency works with other non-profit organization to provide the services. JFSA welcomes this provincial response to broader access to affordable home help across the province. The UWLM has developed a generous sliding fee scale similar to the JFSA model, which means that several of our clients can access household help at lower rates. •A ssistance with networking and computer skills • R eferrals to resources for 55+, along with those that teach workplace technology applications Regardless of which group a candidate belongs to, with the help of JFSA’s committed Employment Counsellors, they become empowered to grow their skills and career. The Employment Services Program is generously funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, the BC Gaming Commission and by Yosef Wosk. 8 Better at Home: Since last October, JFSA’s Home Support Program has been contracted as the service provider in Vancouver’s West End for the West End Senior’s Network, the lead agency in that neighbourhood. Last month, JFSA was approached to become the lead agency for the Marpole, Oakridge, and Kerrisdale area. Other lead agencies have hired one or two additional staff - a Better at Home Coordinator and a Volunteer Coordinator to implement services. We hope to begin by hiring a Coordinator in the new year. JFSA currently provides assistance to approximately 30 Jewish seniors in this area. We estimate that the number of clients will grow to at least 100, and we will employ 4-6 home support staff. Marpole Place Neighbourhood House will be partnering with our agency. One of JFSA’s new responsibilities as a lead agency will be to set up a steering committee of local seniors and stakeholders. We are very excited to work with the community to expand our caring, compassionate and affordable home support service. Funding begins January 1, 2014. We hope to begin to offer services by early February. 9 Client Outcomes Stories of Success First, came the unexpected loss of his parents and other relatives, followed shortly by a damaging stroke that brought lasting health effects. Dan suffered from memory loss, learning difficulties and deterioration of his motor skills. He also lost his computer skills and other work related abilities. Sarah came to JFSA 2 years ago. As a single mother, who had just left an abusive relationship, she was struggling to make ends meet. Her top priority was to be able to take care of her children. “I felt very vulnerable and my personal situation was devastating.” Unable to continue his work as an electrician, Dan found himself without money and was soon living in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. His troubles were made even worse with the diagnosis of Hepatitis C, which required difficult chemotherapy. The treatment deteriorated his health and, in particular, his teeth, which were permanently damaged. Sarah’s Case Manager, met with her to assess her needs for financial assistance. As she was unemployed at that time, JFSA was able to respond immediately and help her with basic needs, such as food vouchers, medical assistance and utilities. Over the next few years, with JFSA support, Sarah was able to rebuild her life. “The agency provided me with food, my case manager helped support me emotionally, connected me with resources and assisted me in creating a plan for achieving my long-term goals.” During this time of transition, Sarah, considered going back to school in order to obtain a meaningful career for herself and to provide for her family. With a stronger foundation and encouragement she was able to take the right steps in this direction. Having heard of JFSA from his parents years before, Dan reached out to us for help affording basic resources, such as food. JFSA provided Dan with food assistance, as well as financial resources to repair his teeth. In addition, our Housing Coordinator helped Dan find affordable, assisted housing in a much better neighbourhood. He was also referred to JFSA’s Mental Health Outreach Coordinator (MHOC). “JFSA has empowered me in many ways. In times of challenge, it is comforting to know that we are not alone in this world. That there are people who care, have compassion and understand your struggle; and that there is help so that you can overcome your challenges. Knowing this gave me courage to pursue my goals, to work harder and take action.” Today, Sarah is pursuing her educational dreams, by attending community college in a Trades Program. Sarah In times of challenge, it is comforting to know that we are not alone in this world. Today, through the help of JFSA, Dan is living a safer, healthier life. Together with the MHOC, he has created Chaverim, a mental health outreach group that brings people together for weekly meetings, coffee gatherings and even outings, such as hikes. Dan I can’t even begin to describe how much my life has changed for the better. “I can’t even begin to describe how much my life has changed for the better,” enthuses Dan. “Just in the past year, my life has made a 100% turn around. Thanks to JFSA, I am now happier and more confident. I feel connected to the Jewish community and am able to observe the holidays.” Dan hopes to reenter the workforce in a parttime capacity as his health allows. 10 10 11 Immigrant Resettlement: Client Profiles and Demographics top four origins of clients: Most needed services: Connections to Jewish Community & Services Assistance Navigating Canadian Systems Employment & Job Search Assistance Finding Jewish Schools & Children’s Services Referrals to Credential Recognition Programs Finding Affordable Housing Nearby Being an immigrant isn’t easy. It’s like a second birth. You arrive in a new country with a different mentality, language, customs and people. It is especially difficult for older adults to become accustomed to another culture and a new atmosphere. During the first two years after my arrival in British Columbia I had a difficult time finding sustainable work. Immigrants go to job assigning centres where they keep telling you the magic word: network. So, you start networking like crazy, meeting everyone you can, forming a chain that could practically reach the Prime Minister’s office! You spend lots of time being interviewed and send hundreds of résumés. You meet some great people, but they all ask for previous work experience in Canada. Nobody even considers looking at your references. I found only casual jobs: delivering newspapers, making ship surveys, working as a security coordinator. None of them had anything to do with my previous career. Nor could they provide for permanent, stable and sustainable employment. DEMOGRAPHICS: Then I heard about JFSA. I met an Immigrant Resettlement Counsellor who welcomed me with the genuine warmth that I desperately needed. With JFSA’s advice and support I began the steps to get local certification. It took 6 months of hard work, intensive studying and exams, but I achieved the accreditation I needed! 200 clients were assisted by the Immigrant Resettlement Department last year Suddenly, doors started to open. JFSA connected me with a former immigrant and now a BC Ferries Captain. As a result, I began working in my industry of choice and met the right people with relevant information. I even got to work on a boat during the Olympic games and as a captain on dinner cruise boats! Slowly, I began to experience this amazing feeling: I was no longer such an outsider. I was starting to belong! The average age of a client is 35 Having a sustainable career has opened a world of possibility for me. I am grateful for all of the support that JFSA has provided on this journey. - Roni The vast majority bring education & work experience with them, which may not be recognized in Canada Roni is currently employed in the maritime travel and tourism industry. 12 12 13 Special Tributes Celebrating Life by Making a Difference Annually, JFSA counts on significant funds generated through tribute card donations. We are grateful for each and every gift. We are fortunate to also have donors who designate JFSA as a beneficiary during a special occasion or a life event. In doing so, they serve as advocates for our organization, communicate our program needs, and raise more funds for the Agency. This past June, Joseph and Rosalie Segal celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with family and friends and named the JFSA Food Assistance Program and the Vancouver Food Bank as recipients for tribute donations. J FSA is grateful to the following friends who have indicated their desire to support our agency for special or solemn occasions: Between April 1, 2013 and August 31, 2013, the following special tributes were received.
