As well as being the ultimate “extension of politics,” warfare tests our morals, beliefs and individual psychology, subjecting them to the most intense pressure imaginable – often to the point of destruction. It follows that the War Film is a broad genre. Some seem to be historical documents, giving us believable reconstructions of events; others blast off into the realms of fantasy or black humour to make their satirical points. Some want to rally us behind the fight Mon 30 June 10.30am – 1.00pm BFI Southbank (NFT 2) 15 – 18 year olds £3.00 per student for a “just cause;” others see warfare of every kind as total stupidity.
