Designed for and by young people, Cinemagic caters for young people (aged 4 to 25) with just about
every level of interest in film, whether to watch and enjoy, create their own work or take things a stage
further and find out more about a career in the film or television industry. Cinemagic strongly believes that
film represents much more than entertainment – the medium of film offers the most accessible way to
learn about and stimulate discussion among young people about the personal and world issues that are

Motivating Young People To Learn Through The Use Of Film
And Filmmaking.
The session, hosted at the BFI, focused on “Motivating Young
People To Learn Through The Use Of Film And Filmmaking”
and examined the use of the three Ss: Story, Setting and

session explored theoretical aspects linked to literacy as
well as practical approaches to filmmaking, focused around
characterisation. Into Film’s training programmes explore
film’s ability to engage students and help them to connect
with the curriculum by inspiring their innate curiosity in the
world. Into Film’s downloadable materials for teachers include
the use of film to help students develop literacy, analytical and
technical skills and promote deep and active learning.
One of the highlights of the festival launch was a special
reception in the Houses of Parliament, Westminster, on
the 3rd April, at which invited young people, educators,
Cinemagic patrons and guests from the small and big

genre study – the war film
with Euroscript
War puts us into the most extreme situations, bringing
out both our best and worst qualities. As well as being
the ultimate “extension of politics,” warfare tests our
morals, beliefs and individual psychology, subjecting
them to the most intense pressure imaginable – often
to the point of destruction.
It follows that the War Film is a broad genre. Some
seem to be historical documents, giving us believable
reconstructions of events; others blast off into the
realms of fantasy or black humour to make their
satirical points. Some want to rally us behind the fight

Illustrated with powerful and entertaining clips, this

behind the War Film. It shows how the genre can
express love and hate, nobility and degradation, as it
sets out the reasons why we fight each other.

Over the last decade ‘writing about film’ has changed with more and more
influence being placed on online journalism. This platform allows for more
accessibility and for the ‘traditional’ reader to have a creative voice. In this
workshop Empire’s Chris Hewitt and Helen O’Hara will explain the processes and
techniques used when analysing film texts before discussing how film journalism
has evolved over the last 10 years. They will also look at the rise of blogging and
how this has affected online journalism in general.

+ Q&A with Julie Dawn Cole (A.K.A Veruca Salt)
Cinemagic is delighted to welcome Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca Salt) to the festival. Julie will introduce today’s
screening and take part in a Q&A after the film!
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - The story of Charlie Bucket, a little boy with no money and a good heart,
who dreams wistfully of being able to buy the candy that other children enjoy. Charlie enters into a magical world
when he wins one of five ‘Golden Tickets’ to visit the mysterious chocolate factory owned by the eccentric Willy
Wonka and run by his capable crew of Oompa-Loompas. Once behind the gates, a cast of characters join Charlie
and Grandpa Joe on a journey to discover that a kind heart is a far finer possession than a sweet tooth.
