“Nothing happens unless first a dream”,
wrote the famous American writer and
poet Carl Sandburg. Great men are
dreamers, in the sense that they get a
glimpse of the future that they have yet
to create. The late Fr. Godfrey Roozen,
SDB, the first Parish Priest and founder
of St. John Bosco Parish was such a man. He dreamt of a beautiful
temple to honor God and to dedicate to the Patron of Youth, St.
John Bosco.
Two years after the parish was established in 1976, that dream of a
magnificent temple was realized by the master architect, Jose Maria
V. Zaragosa. On March 4, 2013, the Parish of St. John Bosco Makati
will celebrate the 35th Year Anniversary of the Consecration of its
Church.
Fr. Roozen also dreamed from the very beginning of a vibrant
Catholic community that is united through the Sacraments and
works of charity and formed under the guidance of the Church and
the Preventive System of Don Bosco. That dream too, is now being
realized by the present Salesian Community of St. John Bosco Parish
that crafted this Vision for the parish:
“The Salesian Community, lay mission partners, and parishioners
together form a community of Christ-centered and sociallycommitted families with preferential care for the youth and the
poor through the guidance of St. John Bosco and Mary Help of
Christians.”
The Catholic Church and, by extension, a Catholic parish is basically
and essentially a community of persons. Once united by Christ, the
Good Shepherd, these people can transform into reality all the plans
and dreams of the parish. By God’s grace and happy solicitude, the
succeeding pastors of St. John Bosco Parish up to the present one,
have done their best to form Christ-centred families and committed
young people. Indeed, the words of Dom Helder Camara ring true
for this Parish, “When we are dreaming alone it is only a dream. But
when we are dreaming with others, it is the beginning of reality.”
The importance of the human element notwithstanding, the physical
structure of the church can be the visible and tangible image of the
community of persons that is the Parish. We take pride in the Godinspired structure of our church. But the continuous wear and tear
of almost 35 years of use of the Church building has damaged some
of its parts, necessitating repairs. At the same time, the altered
features of the main structures of the altar must be restored to the
architect’s original design and made to conform to the rules of
Liturgical reform. It is for this reason that a major fund-raising
Concert was conceived to fund the repair of the sanctuary floor,
the enlargement of the altar and its restoration to the original
design, together with the ambo.
On behalf of the Parish Pastoral Council and the Salesian House
Council, I am so indebted to the Organizing Committee of this
Concert entitled TINIG - United In 1 Voice, for sharing in the dream
of the founders and present pastors of the Parish. I cannot thank
you enough for the courage and dedication you have shown all these
months as we started from scratch until we finalized the last detail
of this accomplished Concert. Truly, when we dream together, we
create reality!
Let me end with another inspiration, this time from the late Sen.
Edward Kennedy who said, “The work goes on, the cause endures,
the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.” To all of you who
have been part of the TINIG Concert, to those who have contributed
financially and offered encouragement and prayers, to those who
came and enjoyed the event and to all of you, my dear parishioners,
my profound gratitude and deep affection. Thank you all and God
bless you.

St. John Bosco Chorale
The St. John Bosco (SJB) Chorale is a church-based choral group
composed of students and young professionals. In November of
2000, Ms. Rose Marie Hugo, then head of the Ministry on Music
and Cultural Affairs (MOMCA), together with Mr. Lester Delgado,
brought together the various choirs of the SJB Parish into a grand
choir which animated special liturgical celebrations of SJB Parish,
Makati. Seeing the potential of the group, they honed the skills of
its members, and since then the SJB Chorale has evolved into a fullfledged, accomplished and multi-awarded choral group.
The group distinguished itself in several local choral festivals and
competitions, including the Harmonies 2004 Choral Festival of the
UST Conservatory of Music, Kamayan Christmas Choral Competition
(2002 Grand Prize Winner), Paskong Himig ng Pasig (2005 & 2006
Grand Champion), PAGCOR Choral Competition (2005 1st runnerup), Himig Pop Choral Competition (2004 1st runner-up and Best Song
Interpretation Award for George Canseco’s “Ngayon”), Harana Kay
Maria Choral Competition (2005 2 nd runner-up) and the 1 st
Vianneyhan Choral Competition (2010 Grand Champion).
The SJB Chorale has, likewise, wowed Filipino communities and
foreign audiences in memorable international concert tours and
festivals: (2004 & 2005) Hongkong, (2007) Austria, Belgium,
Germany and Italy, (2008) Canada, (2010) Singapore.
As it begins its second decade under the guidance of Mr. Vincent
Olandesca, the SJB Chorale continues to focus on fulfilling its mission
of sharing its generous gift of song with more and more people
here and abroad in Masses, concerts, festivals and tours.

with emphasis in Voice at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU)
System under the tutelage of Prof. Elietess Mayor-Cariño. He was
an original member of the PWU Chorale which won 1st Place in the
NAMCYA College Choir Category in 1999 and toured Europe in 2001.
He led the Barangay Cembo Chorale to its Grand Championship in
the Annual SK Choral Competition in 2000.
A baritone, he was the Grand Champion in the Annual Kundiman sa
Makati in 2001 and was a featured performer in SJB Parish Makati’s
benefit and thanksgiving concert, Leap of Hope 2 in 2010. Currently,
he is part of the Klassikal Music Foundation Voice Scholars founded
by Mr. George Yang.
Vince has been a member of the St. John Bosco Chorale since 2005
before he took over as its conductor in 2010.
Rev. Fr. Ting Miciano, SDB
St. John Bosco Parish Makati parish priest, Rev. Fr. Romeo Agustin
Ma. G. Miciano Jr., SDB (more popularly known as Father Ting) best
exemplifies the image of the meek, generous and humble servant
of God who also happens to be one of the Lord’s talented minstrels.
As many of his constituents know, he has been generously blessed
with an uncanny gift of song that touches hearts and soothes weary
souls.
Born on August 15, 1961 in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Father Ting was
regarded as a multi-faceted individual who excelled in academics,
sports, and music even as a young boy. His innate musicality is
evident in the distinct timbre and character of his voice whenever
he leads in the chanting of prayers or presides in Masses.
After his ordination on December 8, 1990, he was assigned to the
Don Bosco Seminary in Canlubang as the spiritual moderator of
the seminarians. After two years, he was transferred to Papua New
Guinea (PNG) where his 13-year service was interrupted only by his
masteral studies in education which equipped him to become the
founder and first Dean of the teachers’ college of the Don Bosco
Technological Institute in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Before
and after this assignment, he was the Principal of Don Bosco
Technical and Vocational Schools in PNG.
Upon his return to the Philippines, Father Ting served the SJB Parish
from 2006 to 2009 as Assistant Vicar and Director of the Don Bosco
Pugad and the Youth Center.
In May 24, 2009, he was officially installed as parish priest of St.
John Bosco Parish Makati in ceremonies presided by His Eminence,
Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, together with priests from the Salesian
community and the Vicariate of Sts. Peter and Paul.
Throughout his tenure, he has generously shared his time and
efforts not just for the improvement of the parish, but also for the
betterment of its parishioners and community. In many ways, he
has acted as a doting father figure who goes out of his way to touch
everyone’s lives with his congenial personality, offbeat sense of
humor and of course, the golden voice that resonates with God’s
majestic glory.

St. John Bosco Parish Children's Choir
Established in 2010, the St. John Bosco
Children’s Choir is one of the most
recent additions to the parish’s everevolving music ministry. Born out of
his desire to animate the Children's
Mass, Fr. Ting Miciano, SJB Parish
Priest, requested the Ministry on
Music and Cultural Affairs (MOMCA)
headed by Gaylord Villa to form a choir
composed of children aged seven to
fourteen years old, who are willing to
volunteer their time and talents to
serve the Church. As part of their
training, the kids attended the 2010
MOMCA Summer Voice Workshop.
The Choir had its major debut in 2010,
during the 10th Anniversary Concert
of the St. John Bosco Parish Chorale,
dubbed “Season 10.” For its first performance, the group sang Stella
Maris in honor of our Blessed Mother Mary. In December of the
same year, they joined with the SJB Chorale once more, together
with Fr. Ting Miciano, for the Christmas Cantata in honor of the visit
of the Pilgrim Relic of St. John Bosco to the parish.
Since then, the Children’s Choir has been singing regularly during
the Children’s Mass every Sunday at 8:30 A.M. and at the San
Lorenzo Village’s anticipated Mass every Saturday at 6:00 P.M.
Wesley Agpaua conducts the SJBP Children’s Choir with Mae Powao
as choir trainor. Gaylord Villa, Marinette Segovia and Concha Segovia
are the Choir Coordinators.

Alvin B. Paulin
Conductor
MR. ALVIN B. PAULIN earned his Bachelor of Secondary Education
major in Music Education at the Philippine Normal University (PNU)
Manila which honored him with the Male Vocal Ensemble Award
when he graduated in 2007. Mr. Paulin was a scholar for the PNU
Chorale and Dr. Enriqueta Dayao-Palazo.
For the past four years, he has been concurrent music teacher and
resident conductor of the multi-awarded, all male high school choir,
Boscorale, at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Makati.
Alvin’s passion for choral singing started in grade school, when his
choir performed at the CCP for NAMCYA. Since college, he has been
an active member of choral groups where he sings as tenor 1 for
the GMATHS Choir and PNU Chorale under Professor Luzviminda B.
Modelo.
While studying at PNU, he handled various chorale groups in and
out of the campus, including the CTL Youth Choir, BEED Choir,
Adamson Nursing Chorale and at present, the Coro Sacra Familia
based in Cavite. He is a proud member of Society of Young Music
Educators and Philippine Choral Directors Association.
The Boscorale is the all-male high school choir of the Don Bosco
Technical Institute in Makati which bested several schools in Makati
and emerged as Champions in the “1st Ayala Land-Makati Inter-school
Christmas Caroling Competition” held last December 10, 2010 at the
Ayala Triangle Gardens. Later, they were invited to perform their
winning piece live in TV Patrol.
In 2005, Mr. Frederick Estrada founded Boscorale. Two years later,
Mr. Alvin Paulin, a high school music teacher and active member of
the Philippine Normal University Chorale, took over as conductor.
Under his supervision, the chorale began participating in various
choral competitions. Soon, they were finishing as finalists or winning
in the competitions they joined: 2 nd place in the Yoshinoya
Megavoices and Joys at the 12 Days of Christmas Caroling
Competition in 2007, 2nd place in Korus Klef in 2008, finalists in Voices
in Harmony in 2009 & 2010, Grand Champion in the Inter-Don Bosco
Academic-Pastoral-Cultural Competition.
Eventually, their perseverance and hard work bore fruit when they
won the major competition in the Ayala Triangle. The school
community is proud of all that they have achieved in five years.
Inspired and moved by the spirit of St. John Bosco, the Boscorale
will continue to train, join and excel in choral competitions.

From St. John Bosco’s dream about St. Dominic Savio:
I said to him, “Tell me, what was your greatest
consolation when you came to die?”
In Loving Memory of
“What do you think?” he answered. I had several
attempts at trying to say what I thought it might be,
such as having lived a pure life, having heaped up so
much treasure in Heaven by all his good works, and so
on, but to all he shook his head with a smile.
MARINA M. ARANDA
“Tell me, then,” I said, quite crestfallen at my failure;
“what was it?”
Caring wife, Mother and
Grandmother
“What helped me most and gave me greatest joy when
I was dying,” replied Dominic, “was the loving care and
help of the great Mother of God. Tell your sons not to
fail to keep close to her while they are alive...”

About the cover
Since 1978, thousands of weddings, baptisms and sacred events have been celebrated in SJB Parish Church with its distinctive starburst
tabernacle upon giant anahaw leaf serving as dramatic backdrop, while overhead, the net of “fishers of men” hovers over the
faithful at prayer. (Photos by Menchit Ongpin)
