KIDNEY DAMAGE
HEALTH
❚❙ Heart patients needed for study
Researchers
seek ways to
ease surgery
side-effects
PATIENTS about to have keyhole surgery on their aorta –
the main artery which leads
away from the heart – are
needed for a medical study.
A new study will seek ways
to prevent kidney damage
which can sometimes occur
after surgery.
Researchers want to test the
effectiveness of administering a blood salt called bicarbonate before the operation.
Endovascular aneurysm repair, or keyhole surgery, is
largely effective but can
sometimes impact on kidney
function.
Leicester clinical lecturer
Athanasios Saratzis said: “It is
well established that if
someone’s kidney function
deteriorates after surgery,
other, even more serious,
complications can arise.
“It is therefore essential to
prevent kidney deterioration.

“Administering bicarbonate
before surgery has previously
been shown to help prevent
kidney problems in similar
forms of surgery and we want
to investigate this further.
“Participating in the trial is
voluntary and taking part
would be hugely beneficial as
the information gathered will
help us to improve the overall
quality of care for future patients.”
Patients who sign up will
have their kidney function
measured before the surgery
using a routine blood test.
They will then be randomly
allocated to one of two study
groups. Both groups will receive fluids through a vein.
Half the patients will be given the bicarbonate ingredient
prior to the operation.
Blood tests will then be
taken after the surgery and
the passing of urine will also
be monitored and recorded
along with the function of the
patient’s vital organs.
If the findings are positive,
it is hoped the study will be
opened up nationally so researchers can find a definitive
answer on how to prevent
kidney failure in patients who
have keyhole operations for
aneurysms.
The study is sponsored by
the University of Leicester
and has been funded as part
of an Academy for Medical
Sciences Starter Grant.
National Institute for
Health Research Leicester
cardiovascular biomedical research unit has helped with
study design, patient and
public involvement and supported the overview of the
trial.

‘STAFF DID A GREAT JOB AT MAKING THE PATIENTS FEEL AT EASE’: Nicky Morgan
MP with eye surgeon Amar Alwitry and a cataract patient at Loughborough Hospital
MP hails cataract service
MP Nicky Morgan has
praised the efficiency of the
cataract surgery service at
Loughborough hospital.
Consultant ophthalmologist and eye surgeon Amar
Alwitry operates twice weekly
at the hospital with 10 patients on each operating list,
rather than the usual six or
seven.
The patient spends 15
minutes in theatre while the
cataract is removed and
replaced with a new lens.
In addition, long or short-
sightedness may be corrected
depending on the choice of
lens.
The Loughborough MP
donned theatre scrubs to
view Mr Alwitry and his team
at work.
Ms Morgan said: “This is an
incredibly efficient service
and Mr Alwitry and the
theatre staff do an amazing
job.
“The patients I spoke to
were absolutely thrilled with
the level of care they received.
“They were telling me how
wonderful it was this service
is available in Loughborough
and that they did not have
travel to Leicester.
“The atmosphere was
relaxed and staff did a great
job at making the patients
feel at ease.”
Mr Alwitry said he was
pleased to be able to show off
the service.
He said: “Our efficient service is only made possible by
the hard work and dedication
of the whole team.”
