The event, themed as a Black and White Ball, was sponsored by Newtown Savings Bank, Curtis Packaging and Ashlar of Newtown. The Annual Meeting was led by Chamber President, Pat Linnell. Along with the ratification of past acts of officers and directors, the Chamber voted unanimously to accept renewal terms of existing board members and the Board nominations of Carole Georges of People’s Bank, Awilda Caisse of Union Savings Bank, Jim Gulalo of Preferred Insurance Services and Peter Giarrantano of P&M Consulting. The slate of officers was presented by nominating committee chair, Janet Woycik. Entertainment at the annual dinner is always a hit. This year was no exception as the Chamber Rooster, played by Don Sharpe, made its appearance at the Ball. The Rooster took pictures at each of the tables and ended his evening with a dance with Pat Linnell. Along with fine dining and dancing to the tunes of DJ Power Station, guests congregated around the Silent Auction table in hopes of outbidding fellow Chamber members on one of the creatively packaged options, includ- ing New England Patriots Preseason Luxury Box Seats, Gourmet Baskets, Leather Jackets, even a Spa Package for dogs. In addition to the Silent Auction, guests were invited to join the “U Pick-It” raffle where you purchase one ticket for $10 for a guaranteed raffle item worth $25 or more. Over 100 items, donated by areas businesses, were raffled-off in this manner. Thanks to Mike Neiman for hard work in getting these items. The Chamber Annual Dinner committee included Mike Neiman of Captain Cont’d on page 8 President’s Message -- Dear Chamber Members, A new year full of promise, hopes, expectations and a lot of exciting new ventures from your Chamber. After our successes last year, we are seeking to make our events more informative and supportive of your business. Upcoming events include a Mardi Gras breakfast in late February, Business of the Year presentation with the Rotary in March, a tri-Chamber meeting with Monroe and Trumbull Chambers, and a meeting at Taunton Press with a presentation on Design and function in today’s office. Thank you to all who attended our annual business meeting and dinner dance. A special thank you goes to Ashlar of Newtown, Curtis Packaging Corp., and Newtown Savings Bank for their sponsorship of the evening and to Mike Neiman who garnered 120 gifts so that almost everyone walked away carrying packages! Thanks to Jane Sharpe for the decorations and a big thank you to Don Sharpe for resurrecting the Chamber Rooster to the delight of the guests! is always considered. Having grown to 10 branches with 170 people, it was no wonder they had outgrown their previous set-up. Now occupying 36,000 sq. ft, they have met their expansion goal and can provide added service to the local community. For example, the Community Room, where the ribbon cut- ting ceremony was held, is now available to the town for meetings and gatherings. John Martocci welcomed the group for showing their support. Shortly after, his heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this expansion possible, he received a plaque from the Tercentennial Com- Tired of not being paid on time or at all? Approximately 137,000 square feet of new retail space will be added to Newtown’s inventory from eight projects currently approved, under construction or planned. Additional square footage is in the discussion stages and will bring much more economic development into Newtown. Most of the new retail projects will be on South Main Street with three of these projects located in Botsford adjacent to and across the street from Sand Hill Plaza. In January, we celebrated the opening of Washington Mutual Bank at the new Waterfall Plaza. Coldstone Creamery, the UPS Store and a yet to be announced restaurant are also expected to join Washington Mutual in the new plaza. The approved Plaza South shopping center which will be adjacent to Sand Hill Plaza makes up the bulk of the inventory of new space with approximately 70,000 square feet of space planned. The developer has plans for some changes to the approval that will increase the number of buildings on the site, shrink their size and permit more retailers to locate there. The changes will effectively make the proposed development more like a life style center which has many advantages including availability of more space for smaller independent retailers. The owners have not announced their new tenants but are expecting to draw a few of the current tenants from Sand Hill Plaza. Edens & Avant, owners of Sand Hill Plaza, have shared their plans for the mall area. TJ Maxx will be expanding their store, Panera Breads will open a bakery and restaurant, Sleepy’s will relocate into a larger space, and Eye Care Plus will move into a new space in another area of the plaza. Avance Esthetiques will remain in its current location, the UPS Store will move to Waterfall Plaza and the Plaza Cleaners already moved into the Village Center closer to town. The Black Swan Stove and Gift Shop have plans to redevelop their property and expand their business into a new 10,000 square foot building that will replace the existing struc- tures on South Main Street. The Swans plan to realign their retail business for better service and efficiency. The Shoppes at Church and Queen Street, the proposed 4,500 square foot office/retail building at 50 South Main Street, a 6,000 square foot retail/office building at 224 South Main Street and the 21,000 square foot Berkshire Plaza make up the remaining projects. This increase in retail space is seen as a boost to the local economy and a revitalization of Newtown’s retail inventory which has not increased significantly since the redevelopment of the Newtown Shopping Center was completed in 1998. The EDC is looking forward to this increase in inventory as it opens a tight market that has not grown appreciably in several years. The Economic Development Commission encourages businesses to contact our office for information concerning business expansion in Newtown. If you or a colleague is planning to explore your opportunities for business growth in Newtown, you are welcome to contact Elizabeth Stocker, directly at 203-270-4271. All inquiries are handled on a confidential and professional basis. ** 24 HOUR ** Janet Woycik and her team celebrated another successful Christmas Tree Lighting. With new lights, the tree looked beautiful. In honor of the tercentennial, Dan Cruson, Town Historian, did the honors of lighting the tree. Curtis Packaging again did a fantastic job on the luminaries. The crowd was treated to donuts donated by Union Savings Bank. Thank you to all those Chamber members who donated over $800 to this honored tradition. DID YOU KNOW... In the 1500’s, houses had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip off the roof. Hence the saying, “Its raining cats and dogs.” Everything Your Business Needs to Succeed. • • • • • Business Checking and Online Banking Small Business and SBA Loans Commercial Loans and Mortgages Business Credit Lines Cash Management Services Carole Georges Darrin Fodor Financial Services Mgr.
