President’s Message
--
Dear Chamber Members,
Spring is in the
air! After an
odd winter of
freezing days,
piles of snow,
and
some
spring-like
temperatures,
I thnk we are
all looking forward to the annual renewal and energy that comes in the form of warm
weather, chirping birds, and lots of
sunshine! The Chamber has lots of interesting events in store and we hope
you will make time to join us at one
or more of our networking functions.
They are designed to meet your needs
and to help your business blossom!
Thank you to Judy Volpe of Avance
Esthetiques for sponsoring our Mardi
Gras Breakfast held at Edmond Town
Hall in February. In addition to a fabulous buffet breakfast courtesy of Jane
Sharpe, alias the caterer, we were given a brief history of the Town Hall and
how the Town Hall Managers run this
historical building.
Congratulations go to Avance Esthetiques and Ashlar of Newtown for
receiving the Chamber and Rotary
“Business of the Year Award” for 2005
in the small and large businesses categories. Their support and commitment
to Newtown are honored and appreciated. Lots of events coming up - be sure to
check the calendar. Also, the Chamber
is meeting with the EDC in an effort to
coordinate their initiative to bring more
business into Newtown. With our input, we are looking forward to the success of this venture.
As we approach this new season, I hope
your businesses continue to thrive and
that your membership in the Chamber
is helpful in that regard. Don’t forget there are plenty of ways to get involved
in the Chamber......we need bright
ideas, energy and thoughtfulness! We
need you!
Energetically yours,
Pat Linnell

In my case – and no doubt in others – it’s all
about embracing the community, making a
name for yourself, being true to your work
and always doing your best. We all make
mistakes, but those who own up to them,
make amends and use them to improve, often end up better for it in the end.

the group on the latest renovations at
the Town Hall and included interesting
tidbits about the history of the building.
The event was sponsored by Avance Es-

prepared by Jane Sharpe.
Tri Chamber Meeting Viewed as a Triple Play
Three area Chambers gathered for a celebrated opportunity to network and build
contacts with business professionals in
several neighboring towns.
People’s Bank sponsored the popular
Tri-Chamber After Hours event held at
the Fireside Inn, which also drew support from the Bridgeport and Stratford
Chambers in addition to the Newtown
and Monroe associations.
Todd P. Martin, Chief Economic advisor
of People’s Bank presented an overall positive Economic outlook for the area. His
presentation showed that housing remains
very strong while the Construction sector
has seen the strongest growth. The presentation concluded with the longer–term
challenges the state must focus on including, transportation, affordable housing,
high business costs, workforce issues, energy problems, competing effectively and
the need for innovation and education for
continued success.

An Update from the Economic Development Commission
By Elizabeth Stocker, AICP, Director of Community Development
Town of Newtown, Connecticut
Even as the news spreads about the
ongoing commercial projects that are
making progress, we are experiencing
a new rush of interest in commercial
and industrial development around
Newtown. The Economic Development Commission is seeing a new
wave of activity for development
projects along the retail corridor of
South Main Street to the hills of Hawleyville. It is very early in the spring
but it is already heating up with a variety of new inquiries that can total
up to hundreds of thousands of new
commercial space over the next year
or two.
While commercial activity generally
tends to be very active in the spring,
this year seems to be especially hot.
Could this be an indication that our
economy is expanding or is it because
new enterprises are just now making their way into Newtown now that
they see the opportunity for growth?
The pace of economic development in
Newtown is brisk and if the several projects that are on the drawing board move
into the construction phase, it may match
or even exceed residential growth. The
first quarter of 2006 has been one of the
most active in recent years.
Right along with private development
interests, the Economic Development
Commission is targeting the end of the
summer for presenting its plans for the
Technology Park to the land use agencies. Environmental reviews and studies are in process and should be completed in coming weeks to allow the
final engineering and layout of the park
for reviews. Biologic and archaeological reports should be ready in the coming weeks. Studies of the land, its flora
and fauna will help to ensure that the
development will be friendly to the environment and will be consistent with
resident’s hopes for a high end project.
The Commission is hopeful that the
new technology park will provide existing Newtown business an opportunity
to expand and grow locally. To enable
this, the Commission will be contacting existing businesses to find out more
about their future growth potential and
to share ideas for encouraging such
growth locally. If your business would
like to discuss the options available to
you, we are available on a confidential
basis and welcome your inquiries.
The Economic Development Commission encourages businesses to contact
the Community Development office
for information concerning business
expansion in Newtown. If you or a
colleague is planning to explore your
opportunities for business growth in
Newtown, you are welcome to contact
Elizabeth Stocker, directly at 203-2704271. All inquiries are handled on a
confidential and professional basis.

Located right on Queen Street, the
Newtown Color Center serves commercial painters and residential
“do-it-yourselfers”. Although the
Newtown Color Center has been
part of the Newtown community for
over 30 years, the company has been
owned by Tim Morris for twelve
years.
The store stocks an incredible selection of paint and wallpaper from well
known brands like Benjamin Moore,
Cabots, Sikkens and Panofin. They
also carry Waverly and Blondar wallpaper.
In great contrast
to the large, retail
chains, this store
offers a friendly
atmosphere and a
comfortable shopping
experience.
Consumers
are
greeted with a smile,
right from the start.
The staff, many of
whom are relatives
of Tim, is friendly
and knowledgeable
and offer guidance
in selecting paint,
wallpaper and accessories. There are hundreds of colors
available, including tips on decorating
and hints on how to paint whether you
are interested in traditional styles or
creative faux finishes.
Tim recently joined the Chamber to
help promote his business and allow
Newtown Color Center to fully become
part of the Newtown’s small business
community. He has participated in the
Chamber’s Destination Newtown and
is looking forward to staying active in
future functions. He believes staying
in touch with the community is a great
way to promote business and nurture
relationships.

“It’s wonderful to be part of a group
of other businesses where the focus
seems to be on networking to achieve
success. I can learn so much through
talking with others and sharing experiences. If I can help them, too, it is
just as rewarding.”
Denise has not been a member of the

business owner, she is still trying to
master the art of time management.
As a result, she has not had the opportunity to attend many Chamber

many new people who were just as

DID YOU KNOW...
In the 1500’s, most people got
married in June because they
took their yearly bath in May,
and still smelled
pretty good by June.
However, they were
starting to smell,
so brides carried a
bouquet of flowers
to hide the body odor. Hence
the custom today of carrying a
bouquet when getting married.
