See you at the show! President’s Message -2- Dear Chamber Members, It’s Fall again! We are uniquely blessed to have such a beautiful season to enjoy at its fullest……and we are again reminded of this when we see the tragic disasters that have befallen our Gulf Coast neighbors, friends and families. While our lives continue and our businesses prosper, new starts are necessary for thousands of people. Perhaps we can keep this in mind when we are complaining about the price of gas! Thank you to Jane Sharpe for the summer events, the tour of Sandy Hook by Mike Porco, the Beardsley Zoo Open House for families (my granddaughter loved it!), the Ashlar BBQ (once again indoors due to rain), and the Open House at Newtown Computer & Financial. And the Labor Day Parade – many thanks to Barbara O’Connor for the use of her convertible. And also thanks to Bill Valenti for riding with me and to the “Chamber Rooster” for performance beyond expectations. Newtown” with the newly added Retail Passbook Program. Strategies for a Successful Employee Relations Program By Tom Gutner, Ashlar of Newtown No matter what your business, you’re only as good as your employees. The challenge for businesses today is not only to recruit the most qualified people, but more importantly, to retain a satisfied workforce in a highly competitive marketplace. Consider the following retention strategies that have proven successful for Ashlar of Newtown: Training and growth opportunities: Provide training initially and on a continuing basis to assure a staff member develops and maintains the skills and knowledge necessary to fulfill their responsibilities. Offer tuition reimbursement to encourage staff to further their professional growth. Staff recognition initiatives: Demonstrate your appreciation for the hard work of your staff. At Ashlar of Newtown we regularly host BBQ’s, Ice Cream Sundae days, an annual Employee Recognition Dinner and themed events in which the management team serves the staff and thanks them for their efforts. In addition, accomplishments are recognized verbally and in writing and through monetary and gift card rewards. Participatory decision-making systems: Involve staff in decisions that affect them rather than imposing decisions upon them. Focus Groups and Open Forums are constructive ways to learn what your staff is thinking. Balance between work and family demands: To the extent possible, offer flexibility to accommodate personal commitments and promote social/recreational activities, which are open to staff’s family. Open and timely communication: Being alert to opportunities to share information with staff is essential. Also, supervisors and management can enhance communication through staff meetings and being accessible. Positive relationship between staff: Build teamwork by establishing common goals and objectives. Through mutual respect and support, work together to achieve them. Adequate resources and facilities: Ensure your staff has the resources needed to do their jobs. A successful solution to the issue of Do YOUR Marketing Materials Need an EXTREME MAKEOVER? TOUR OF SANDY HOOK VILLAGE Mike Porco of Porco Construction regaled Chamber members with fascinating stories about Sandy Hook of yesteryear, while leading a walking tour of the various newly developed buildings. The tour began in the Mocha Coffee House, went through Red Brick Tavern, the Toy Tree, Porco’s Academy of Karate and even Sub- way. The tour continued through lower-level office space, overlooking the Pootatuck River and continued through the walking path to the new parking lot. Mike presented some of his plans for continued improvements for the Sandy Hook area. Chamber members were delighted to partake in such an interesting tour. OPEN HOUSE BEARDSLEY ZOO Chamber members and their families gathered at the new educational building, constructed in conjunction with Jane Sharpe of Ward Cedar Log Homes. Members were welcomed by Animal Programs & Operations Director, Don Goff and were given a brief introduction to the Zoo and all its programs and exhibits, including on-site camps, business development days, birthday parties and other private function. This event has come to mark the send-off to summer and a kick-off to the fall season. As a member of the dia, Zoo staff presented interesting information about their Species Survival Program, which explained how the Amur tigers were granted approved for participation in the Zoo’s breeding program. Information was also provided on the two additional building projects in place, including a cedar log building offering a wolf viewing station and another to be used as a new Aviary. After the reception, members were given family passes to enjoy the zoo. Board of Directors, Tom continues to show his support of the Chamber and the Newtown community. While the weather did not permit pond-side dining, BBQ fair was served indoors. Around the Town -5- An Update from the Economic Development Commission By Elizabeth Stocker, AICP, Director of Community Development Town of Newtown, Connecticut Fall marks the season for the Economic Development Commission to look back over the past year and to make preparations for the new year. They do this by sponsoring an annual Salute to Business which provides an opportunity for the commission members to network with Newtown’s business leaders and to select a couple of local businesses to recognize for their contribution to the Newtown community and its economy. This eight annual event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 6th from 5 to 7 pm at the Fireside Inn and all businesses are invited. While I am not going to give away any hints concerning the businesses that will be recognized this year, it is important to note that all local businesses both small and large contribute to the community and its economic well being. It is important to the local economy that businesses succeed and grow in the community. Overall, business activity and trade have been brisk in Newtown over the past year. As you drive around Newtown you will see many commercial projects under construction. These projects are taking place in Hawleyville, the Borough, Sandy Hook and in Botsford. Projects underway include the development of the Shoppes at Church Hill and Queen into a new shopping complex, Newtown Savings Bank, Edmond Town Hall elevator project, an addition at Connecticut Countertops where the old Botsford Post Office was located and the redevelopment of the Newtown Manufacturing site into the Waterfall Plaza. Also under development, the Hawleyville House on Hawleyville Road, a new personal services building on Botsford Road, and a new headquarters for Environmental Energy Systems (EES) at the Curtis Corporate Park. Sidewalks are being installed in Sandy Hook and plans are on the drawing board for a new Hawleyville Post Office, a new restaurant on Church Hill Road, an addition to the Prudential Realty offices and a new building at 50 South Main Street. Commercial construction activity is brisk and new projects are being explored on an ongoing basis. The Economic Development Commission encourages businesses to contact the Community Development office for information concerning business expansion in Newtown. If you or a colleague planning to explore your opportunities for business growth in Newtown, you are welcome to contact Elizabeth Stocker, directly at 203-270-4271. All inquiries are handled on a confidential and professional basis. ** 24 HOUR ** STATEWIDE EMERGENCY SERVICE • WATER EXTRACTION • RE-CONSTRUCTION • SOOT REMOVAL • MOLD REMEDIATION • BUILDING DRYING • ODOR CONTROL 1-800-233-8220 Serving Connecticut with offices in WATERBURY * BRANFORD * NORWALK * NEW BRITAIN www.jpmaguire.com E-mail : [email protected] EVENT APPLICATION November 9, 2005 4:00 – 8:00 pm Fireside Inn CONTACT INFORMATION Company: _______________________________________________________________ Contact: ________________________ Email: ________________________________ Address: _______________________________________________________________ City: ________________________ State: ______ Phone: ________________________ Fax: Zip: ___________________ ________________________________ BOOTH SPONSORSHIP* Platinum Package......................................................................................................... $375 Includes: 1, 8 ft skirted table, Electric Outlet, Full Page B&W ad in the Program Book, inclusion in all event marketing programs Gold Package ............................................................................................................... $200 Includes: 1, 6 ft skirted table, Quarter Page B&W ad in the Program Book, inclusion in all event marketing programs PROGRAM BOOK ADVERTISING Full Page (8. x 5) .......................................................................................................... $100 Half Page (4 x 5)............................................................................................................. $50 Quarter Page/Business Card (2 x 3.5)............................................................................ $25 DOOR PRIZES/RAFFLE PRIZES I would like to donate a door prize/raffle prize. That’s right! Any business, regardless of its size, needs to focus on making a positive first impression to their visitors. What kind of first impression does your business make? Here are a few tips to consider, it you’re considering giving your office a fresh new makeover: Select a wise color scheme. Differing colors affect people differently. Be sure the color scheme you want to use will be appealing to your visitors. And be cautious of color trends – some colors and patterns tend to date themselves very quickly. Gain perspective. Remember, mostly lobby or waiting room areas are not viewed from a standing position – but rather a seated position. What an important consideration in positioning furniture and waiting room accessories. tures can affect the productivity of your staff, the mood of your customers, and the overall enjoyment they’ll get from being in your office. Create a flow. It’s not uncommon for rooms in an office to blend together. The wisest decision would be to follow one master color throughout your office. Consult with a professional. You will gain great advice and ultimately save money. Ask your staff. Why not consult with your employees and garner their suggestions. You might be very surprised to find they’re more interested in their surroundings than you might expect. See the light. Every room you decorate is really two rooms – day lit and electric lit. Since lighting actually shapes a room it’s important to see your product selections and samples in both lights. Window treatments and lighting fix- Trust your Instincts. Never reject an idea, no matter how wild—just because you haven’t seen it elsewhere. Bounce it off your design professional to get their professional opinion. And remember, any room is truly like a canvas. In your office or home, the design possibilities are simply endless. For more information, Lynn can be reached at 203-426-3694.
