The holidays can sometimes “make the year,” in terms of revenue and profit, and for other businesses, the holidays are a time to relax and plan for the new year. The Chamber of Commerce hopes that you close out a successful 2012, despite the challenges of the economy. When you make your review, you might consider being easy on yourself. In other words, if revenue or profits are down, consider the positive achievements, such as increased flexibility and creativity to overcome daily obstacles. These are assets not measured on a balance sheet, but ones that have a lasting positive impact on your business and your life. The Chamber has a lot to be grateful for this year, but also a lot of work to do in order to better represent our members. Most recently, our members showed their New England resilience by turning out in force for our 9th annual Destination Newtown at Rock Ridge Country Club, in spite of the weather. I know our local citizens are served well by a community of businesses that are willing to overcome obstacles to serve them no matter what. This is the kind of dedication that will welcome to our new members: Bruce coviello Entertainment Group Bruce Coviello 203-304-9011 45 Cold Spring Road, Newtown cider mill designs Kimberly Charles 203-512-0989 2 Thunder Ridge Road, Sandy Hook Cycle In Place Mitzi Hayes & Molly Basak-Smith 203-304-9738 274 South Main Street, Newtown November//December December2012 2012 22••November EasyCare Energy Solutions Barbara Eberstadt 203-463-9764 160 Christian Street, Oxford MW Financial James Ryan 203-770-0518 22 The Boulevard, Newtown New Fairfield Press / Godfather Promotions Jim Bixby 203-746-2700 Dunham Drive, New Fairfield make our business community even more successful in 2013. Tim Haas 203-297-6089 [email protected] LOYALTY? BAH! Loyalty toward employers continues to decline and has now reached a seven-year low, according to a new study, with job insecurity and expectations that benefits will be cut as leading contributing factors. About one in three employees hopes to be working for a different company this year, according to MetLife in its 10th Annual Study of Employee Benefits Trends, and the figure increases precipitously for those in Gen Y. “This ‘loyalty gap’ signals a troubling misperception that employers should take seriously,” MetLife stated in its report. “An employee who feels more expendable is likely to be less engaged and committed.” Four in 10 employers plan to maintain their current benefits, MetLife found, with another 30 percent shifting some costs to employees and 10 percent more otherwise cutting benefits. Fairfield County Business Journal • Week of May 28, 2012 November / December 2012 • 3 Enabling my business. “Creating smiles is my passion, but being involved in the community and with our patients and their families is what I love most. It was a natural fit to go to Union Savings Bank. I was able to bring my business, checking, and merchant accounts to the bank, and also restructure loans to coincide with the building of my new location. But it’s not just about business; Union Savings Bank’s commitment to the community matches my philosophy. It’s that type of connection that makes doing business with Union Savings Bank so easy.” Dr. Joshua E. Baum Joshua E. Contrary to popular belief, there is no “Franco.” Marcio Santo and Elizabeth Siemon, owners of Franco’s Pizza and Pasta assumed ownership of the Sand Hill Plaza location in 2003. Since then they have expanded the menu of the 35-seat restaurant to more than just pizza and pasta. over 40 years experience in the restaurant industry. Today, the family friendly menu includes a number of chicken and seafood entrees, baked dishes, wraps, panini sandwiches, grinders, and a special children’s menu. There’s always something for everyone of all ages - whether you want a quick snack, or a full Italian dinner. Santo’s pizza making skills have achieved international recognition. He has participated in several pizza competitions worldwide, and along with Elizabeth, served as one of the judges for a pizza competition in Shanghai, China, five years ago. As a previous participant of the Las Vegas pizza competition, Santo has already confirmed his place in that contest for March 2013. Marcio has been a chef for nearly twenty years and designed the menu. Most of his ideas come from his “Nonna Maria,” who taught him to cook as a child. He also worked for the Criscuolo Family for 10 years. The Criscuolo’s have Elizabeth also comes from a food service background. Since she was six years old, her mother has owned a bakery and restaurant. She also went to college for hotel and restaurant management. In addition, they both travel regularly to Italy to get new ideas and develop new recipes. Not only does Franco’s have delicious pizza and a strong following of loyal customers, but their employees stick around, too. The restaurant industry is infamous for high employee turnover, but this pizza destination in Newtown is known for their reputation in employee retention. Examples of loyal and hard working employees include Newtown resident, Anthony Gadoci who has been working at Franco’s since August 2008 and Nick Garofalo who has been there since 2004. Anthony states he has been a loyal employee at Franco’s because it’s a family-owned business that treats him as one of their own. “Marcio and Elizabeth have a great deal of experience in the food industry and they always focus their priorities on their employees and customers.” November / December 2012 • 5 event reviews M o r t g a g e S e min a r Left: Karl Noivadhana of ma Capital Resources, gives a detailed presentation on how attendees can successfully lower their debt over a certain period of time. We can’t build deep relationships with patients if we’re changing employees every couple of years. The long standing relationships we build are a large part of our continued success as a medical practice. What’s Our Secret? According to Sharon Daniels of the Harvard Business Review, “the cost of replacing an employee is estimated at up to 250 percent of their annual salary.” Retaining employees is not easy and there is no exact formula, but we have compiled a list of suggestions and strategies that might help. u u u Get the Right People in the Door The most difficult part about hiring new employees is finding someone that has the experience, knowledge, and personality that will work well in the environment of your business. Phone screenings, multiple rounds of interviews, reference checks and behavioral questions are all good ways to ensure you’re bringing in the right candidates for a new hire. Also, allowing staff other than management to be involved in the interview process is a great way to weed out candidates while showing your existing staff you value their opinion. Compliment Your Staff It’s always easier to notice something wrong with another’s work, but just as important to point out the positives and show some gratitude and appreciation. A small compliment here and there can do wonders for self esteem, confidence, and in turn, efficiency. Increase Salary When Deserved When the economy is struggling, it may seem difficult to increase pay. Try to find a way to offer a small raise to help employees keep up with inflation. One of the exam rooms at Moore & McGlynn Eye Care where the staff performs eye examinations, analysis and other vision tests on patients. Offer New Challenges and Rewards It’s always hard for a manager or owner to relinquish control and allow others to take on more responsibility. However, you have to have trust in your employees to take on new tasks. Most employees seek new challenges and anticipate promotions or career growth opportunities in order to avoid job redundancy and boredom. Encourage Open Communication Creating an environment of open communication and transparency is critical. People shouldn’t have to work in an environment where they can’t speak their true feelings. Whether it be disclosing a new idea, or expressing problems with a colleague or superior, all your employees should have a voice. If they don’t speak up, problems fester and become larger than necessary. Hosting periodic staff meetings in a non-threatening environment, where all the employees can share what is on their mind (the good and the bad), can go a long way.
