After the “I do's” were said and the last of the buttercream icing was eaten off of the cake, newly-weds Charmaine and Isaac hopped across the Atlantic for their honeymoon, where they spent “seventeen glorious days traveling around Spain, drinking wine, and eating delicious food.” HONEY, I FORGOT THE RINGS! Before the ceremony, Charmaine and Isaac accidentally forgot to hand over their rings to the best man! “Fortunately,” Charmaine said, “thanks to some quick thinking on the part of my bridesmaids who handed off [the] rings to the best man while I was walking down the aisle, we were still able to do the ring exchange and nobody was the wiser. We also have a great story to tell!” Y CEREMONY, RECEPTION, CATERING + ACCOMODATIONS: Clover Forest Plantation, Goochland, VA, 804.457.3535 PHOTOGRAPHY: Laura's Focus Photography, Blacksburg, VA, 540.808.9018 GOWN, VEIL + BRIDESMAID DRESSES: Jingles, Richmond, VA, 804.364.4009 SHOES: Urban Outfitters, urbanoutfitters.com MATRON OF HONOR DRESS: 6pm.com FORMALWEAR: Jos. Here, on white-linen tables featuring gold napkins with handmade coral-colored paper flowers, guests enjoyed an assortment of wines and beers along with a dinner which included chicken milanese, flank steak, mushroom risotto, and rustic Italian rolls. To compliment the theme, they also had a picnic-like, familystyle menu. Teal and coral were their colors of choice, emerging in the décor as well as in the invitations. LAUGHS, SWEETS, AND LOVE “We got married outside on a grassy hill overlooking Upshur Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia,” Chelsea said about her five o'clock ceremony. A decorated arch and flower pedestals adorned the alter, and a unity candle, which would play a significant role in the ceremony as they symbolized their union, was placed nearby. The center aisle was lined with shepherds hooks from which were hung mason jar floral arrangements and decorative wood filigree frames displaying childhood photos. Two family friends, Jordan (JC) and Ron (RJ) Ocampo provided music for the ceremony, playing the keyboard and violin as the wedding party walked down the aisle. To get to and from the ceremony and reception sites, guests and the wedding party utilized golf carts and four-wheelers as their main mode of speedy, albeit risky, transportation. “My dad was driving one of the golf carts (a little too fast) with me in it holding the flower girl in my lap,” Chelsea explained, when “he hit a bump and we rolled out of the cart. Luckily it wasn’t on the way to the ceremony – just the night before.” • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 With Brian scheduled for deployment in early 2014, the couple had only six months to plan for their big day. real weddings A GOOD EXCUSE After waiting for Brian to return home from his Naval duties out at sea, Chelsea was excited to have him meet her at her place of work to be introduced for the first time to all of her co-workers. But by the time five o'clock rolled around and he wasn't there, Chelsea began to worry. “I called and he said traffic was terrible, so I headed home,” Chelsea said. “About thirty minutes later, Brian came home and was acting super weird. He kept pacing and fidgeting - I honestly thought he was about to break up with me! Then he said he couldn’t wait anymore and got down on one knee and proposed!” Apologizing for his late arrival, Brain said he had not been able to make it to Chelsea's work because, instead of heading right over, he had gone to pick up her ring right after getting off his Naval ship. 103 The reception was held under a large tent provided by Eastern Shore Events and Rentals. Strung with cafe lights, it housed a large oak bar table and smaller wine barrel tables for appetizers. Guest tables were set with white linens and napkins which encircled the silverware and were tied up with a teal ribbon. Centerpieces included mason jars filled with teal and coral stones and arrangements of silk coral roses and white gardenias all placed on top of square, bevel-edged mirrors. Surrounding these were sprinkled crystal heart and diamond decorations, as well as coral tissue paper flowers filled with candy and tied with an ivory ribbon. Guest favors were etched-glass champagne flutes displaying the couple's double-heart emblem and wedding date. Inside these at each place setting were wine corks which held guests' place cards. The children in attendance at the event received small glasses filled with M&M's candies. Chelsea also filled doubleheart organza goodie bags with personalized M&M's – each one exhibiting the wedding date, a word of thanks, and the printed faces of the bride and groom. “One of the twin cousins in attendance made the comment to his mom, 'I can’t eat this - it has their faces on it,'” Chelsea remarked. • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 real weddings AN ARRAY OF CORAL AND ROSES Chelsea's gown was an Alfred Angelo, purchased in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was diamond white in color, boasted a fit and flare silhouette, and was accented with decorative jeweled beading at the top. For shoes, she selected sparkly silver Toms and opted to wear a pearl headband instead of a veil. She also wore her mother-in-law’s pearls. About her ensemble, Chelsea said “I've never felt more beautiful in my life.” 104 The maid of honor and five bridesmaids all wore the same coral-colored dress from Francesca's Boutique in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The junior bridesmaid wore a different style dress in a similar color and the flower girl wore a white satin dress with a coral bow. The groom, best man, and four groomsmen wore dark grey Vera Wang tuxedos from Men's Warehouse with grey vests and coral ties to match the hue of the bridesmaids' dresses. To match the bride, the groom's tie was off-white. A BOOK OF MEMORIES For their engagement photos, Brian’s mother, who loves taking pictures, offered to take the couple around the Hampton Roads area for a series of photo shoots. After selecting the best shots, she created a photo book through Creative Memories that Chelsea and Brian used as their guest book at the reception. Guests were encouraged to write their well-wishes on the open areas of the pages. According to Chelsea, “It was a fun way to share the engagement pictures and have a lasting memory.” Y CEREMONY + RECEPTION SITE: Upshur Neck Lodge, Blake Johnson, Quinby, VA, 757.787.4242 PHOTOGRAPHY + INVITATIONS: Maddie K. Immediately, a connection was formed and the two started dating a few months later. When it eventually came time for Patrick to propose, he decided to do it outdoors. The day before Kim was scheduled to leave Charlottesville for Atlanta, he asked her if she'd like to go on a hike in Shenandoah National Park. She agreed, and afterwards, he suggested the two take a photo at a scenic overlook. After finding the right location, Kim went to set up her camera and when she turned around to pose, found Patrick down on one knee. Thinking he was trying to ruin the picture, she attempted to pull him to his feet, but she had no such luck. He had a question he needed to ask her first. A FAMILY AFFAIR “Our wedding was centered around our family and our heritage,” Kim said. From chapel to wedding gown, everything at the couple's event played a significant part in their family tree. Instead of purchasing a new dress, Kim wore the gown her grandmother and mother had worn at their weddings. She also carried the napkin from her baptism and wore a string of pearls that her grandmother, Virginia Sledd Rogers, gave to her. The ring bearer also got in on the heirloom affair, carrying a ring pillow used in the groom's parents' wedding. The ceremony itself was held at the Grace Lutheran Church in Chester, Virginia – the same church Kim had attended growing up. “The ladies of the Altar Guild were so kind and put up beautiful white banners, ribbons at the end of the first pew, and assisted the florist in putting the arrangements in the right places,” Kim said about Grace Lutheran. “We also had pictures from family weddings displayed in the foyer before and after the wedding.” A CEREMONIAL HEIRLOOM For her dress, Kim decided to wear the candlelight satin gown worn by both her mother and grandmother that dated back to 1948. The garment had long sleeves that tapered to a point on the back of her hands, netting around the neck highlighted with original beading, and a long train. Kim also wore her aunt's Italian, cathedral-length veil, worn at her ceremony in Rome. While Patrick wore a black tuxedo with a candlelight satin bow tie, the groomsmen all wore black suits with cornflower blue bow ties from the Men & Boys Shop in Charlottesville. The bridesmaids wore Cornflower Blue dresses from the Jasmine Bridal line at Ellis Bridal Shop in Chester, Virginia. real weddings MAY 2013 located at • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 25 SAT U R DAY 107 During the ceremony, Kim carried a bouquet of cascading roses in shades of pink and purple. CELEBRATING CULTURE Tuckahoe Plantation was the site of Kim and Patrick's reception. Gathered under a tent decorated with crystal chandeliers, bird cages, love birds, and Baby's Breath, guests enjoyed blue Margaritas, pulled pork, and the Ketchersid family's homemade cornbread. As the bridal party was introduced, they all carried parasols (even the groomsmen) upon entering into the reception space. In addition to its beaded lace and empire waist, it also incorporated delicate cap sleeves and a chapel train. Her veil was also from the David's Bridal Collection and was short in length with freshwater pearls and crystal beading along its edge. Anna kept to tradition, wearing something old: a pearl necklace of her mother's, something new: a pair of gold, diamond, and pearl earrings from Macy's, something borrowed: a pearl bracelet loaned to her from her aunt, and something blue: her fourand-a-half-inch, navy blue satin and ivory lace peep-toe pumps. Anna's four bridesmaids wore chiffon halter dresses by Bill Levkoff in navy. Each had a sweetheart neckline, gathered pleats at the bodice, an empire waist, and an A-line skirt with a pleated, sheer overlay. Having met through a mutual friend, they remained friends all throughout their time at the university. It wasn't until a few years later, however, at a Hokie New Year's Eve reunion party, that the pair discovered their relationship had unexpectedly blossomed into something more. 111 Those who were civilians wore Calvin Klein tuxedos with navy vests, ties, and handkerchiefs. The military officers wore their branch's version of mess dress (military formalwear). For fun, each of the six groomsmen wore superhero tee-shirts under their dress shirts as well as matching superhero cufflinks. AN OCCASION FIT FOR SALUTE Anna and Matthew's ceremony took place on Hotel Roanoke's garden terrace at sunset – the classic architecture of the building and the sun's waning light making a beautiful backdrop for their vows. The reception, on the other hand, was held inside the hotel in the Crystal Ballroom – a showstopping space in itself. With its crystal chandeliers, gold wall sconces, and many mirrors, Anna proclaimed it to look like something right out of a fairytale. With the help of her mother, sister, and cousin, Anna designed each of the tables' centerpieces which included glass vases, gold tea lights, and pink and blue flower arrangements. All the displays were illuminated with blue vase lights and sat upon circular mirrors to accent the décor of the ballroom. • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 real weddings The couple incorporated numerous military traditions into their reception. The first of these was a sword arch formed by the various men in uniform attending the event, just as the couple entered the reception area. “The leading men on our eight-man sword detail stopped us before we could walk all the way through, demanding a kiss as toll payment,” Anna said. “After we kissed, they raised their swords to allow us to pass, and then I was smacked on the bum with one of the swords and welcomed to the Air Force.” 112 The newlywed couple also cut their cake with an Air Force sword, this one belonging to Anna's grandfather's. Over the course of the evening, Anna and Matthew received their share of attention and praise from their loved ones. Numerous guests gave speeches at their reception, including the father of the bride, the best man, and Anna's sister. “My father and the best man both gave incredible, touching toasts and I will never forget how special they were,” Anna said. Her sister, on the other hand, gave a speech that was more tongue and cheek. “I love her so much for finding a way to make me laugh through the happy tears,” she said. In addition to the planned speeches, Anna also received some rather unexpected attention – at one point in the evening, after guests had been dancing for a while, some of the men in attendance took Anna and placed her in a chair in the middle of the dance floor and surrounded her, singing at the top of their lungs, “You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,” by the Righteous Brothers. LOVE CONQUERS ALL Like many wedding plans, Anna's didn't always go on as expected. “We had five bridesmaids originally,” she explained, “but the typhoons in Japan the week of the wedding stranded Shelly Matsue [one of the bridesmaids], leaving us with four on the big day.” Anna also had stress-dreams about her big day, one night dreaming she was pregnant and serving as the maid of honor in Matthew's wedding, her sister being the bride. When all was said and done, however, and the changing plans and bad dreams had become a thing of the past, Anna thoroughly enjoyed her wedding day. A word of advice she gives to the next bride is: “At the end of the day, if you are married to the person you love, your wedding was perfect.” Y CEREMONY, RECEPTION, + CATERING: Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, VA, 540.985.5900 PHOTOGRAPHY: Tara Lilly Design Photography, Roanoke, VA, 540.309.5210 OFFICIANT: Blackstone Baptist Church, Reverend Robert Brown, Blackstone, VA, 434.264.1762 GOWN + VEIL: David's Bridal Collection, David's Bridal, Roanoke, VA, 540.563.5800 SHOES: Etsy, walkinonair.etsy.com HAIR: Shear Designs Salon, Becky Gomez, Lynchburg, VA, 434.239.9202 BRIDESMAID DRESSES: Bill Levkoff, Chantilly Lace Bridals and Formals, Blacksburg, VA, 540.951.5361 FORMALWEAR: Calvin Klein Tuxedo, Men’s Warehouse, Roanoke, VA, 540.563.9860 FLOWERS: George's Flowers, Roanoke, VA, 540.981.0900 MUSIC: RSP Entertainment, Roanoke, VA, 540.312.3353 CAKE: Coffey Cakes, Lynchburg, VA, 434.941.7182 ACCOMMODATIONS: Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, VA, 540.985.5900 / Cambria Suites, Roanoke, VA, 540.400.6226 HONEYMOON: Holland America Cruise Lines, 877.932.4259 SENDOFF: FlutterFetti, Largo, FL, 877.321.1999, flutterfetti.com • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 In addition to the swords, Anna and Matthew also incorporated a ring warming custom in their pre-ceremony events. Jeremiah proposed to Lindsey in September of 2012 when the couple had the opportunity to go to Jamaica on vacation. Having high hopes for the occasion, Lindsey was expecting Jeremiah to pop the question during their trip. After a nice dinner on the Wednesday of their stay in Jamaica, Jeremiah took Lindsey down to a shelter that overlooked the Caribbean Sea, bathed in moonlight. He knew Lindsey's expectations of him during their trip and thought the location overlooking the sea would be the perfect spot to get down on one knee. However, instead of heading straight to the proposal, he pretended to want to go back to their hotel room instead. “Then, all of sudden, Lindsey started to cry,” Jeremiah said. He asked her what was wrong and she told him, “Jeremiah, if you are not ready now, when will you ever be?” To her question, Jeremiah answered, "I've always been ready; I just wanted to make sure you were.” Concerned about bringing Lindsey's engagement ring across international borders, Jeremiah showed Lindsey a picture on his phone of his own hand holding it and asked, “Will you marry me?” Lindsey, thinking he was joking, started to cry harder. In the picture, Jeremiah's hands were dirty, for he went to purchase the ring right after he got off of work. “Look, Lindsey,” he said, trying to explain. “Who else would have those dirty hands holding a diamond ring?” Lindsey then began crying even harder and said yes. • virginia bride | summer / fall 2014 “From that point on, we became attached to each other through a bond that neither one of real weddings “I had never met Lindsey and she had a pretty serious boyfriend,” Jeremiah said about the situation. Included in this list of heirlooms were canning jars, antique chairs, and various buckets and canisters. “My mother,” Lindsey said, “used burlap and lace found in the groom's grandparents' home to decorate these items, along with old table cloths, curtains, and vintage fabric for décor.” In addition to these décor items, a wall and entrance door to the ceremony were constructed out of old barn wood and barn doors, and a lemonade stand was set up nearby for refreshments. The couple also served a number of cakes to their guests, many of which were made from family recipes and included Granny Brammer's pound cake and Granny McMillan's apple sauce cake.
