GROWING
OUT SERVICE
When you buy an unbroken youngster you are
getting first bite of the cherry. These are not horses
that have been assessed by the professionals and
passed over. These youngsters have the potential
to change Australian Olympic history.
The first step with an unbroken youngster is to
grow him/her out with exposure to good fencing,
appropriate companionship and a diet that includes
the right minerals for bones and joints to develop,
plus a program of regular worming.
Auction of the Stars will take care of all of this. You
do not have to have a moment’s worry. It’s a great
way to buy a youngster, and a great way to get the
beginnings of a dream, managed by professionals.

A MESSAGE FROM HEATH
December 2013
Welcome to the 2013 AOS December Auction
here at Heatherbrae. Each year the auctions
do evolve and progress demands that we do
keep reinventing ourselves. Certainly the focus
has gone from selling mainly weanlings in the
early days to today selling a much larger proportion of ridden horses. Of
course, over the years, our weanlings have become ridden horses and
today we are proud of the performances of horses sold through the AOS
auctions.
• Utopian Cardinal was presented through the 2010 AOS Heatherbrae
Auction. Cardinal is by Regardez Moi and today is the youngest
Australian Grand Prix Dressage horse to be challenging for team
selection for the World Equestrian Games next year in France. At the
time of writing Cardinal had competed in only eight Grand Prix tests
and had won seven.
• Jude R, by Jive Magic out of Marge R, was bought as a weanling by
Sue Hearn at AOS in 2006. Today he is a seven-year-old who has just
won his first advanced dressage test. Sue feels that Jude has a very
exciting future in front of him.
• Bindaboo is a Brilliant Invader gelding bought by Lindsay Honey in
2010 as a 1* eventer. Lindsay and Bindaboo are today 3* and in the
running for selection for the World Equestrian Games in France next
year.
• Aspire R was sold as a three-year-old in November 2009 and is by
Aspen. He was bought by Pamela Maine and has been primarily
campaigned by Heath Ryan. Aspire R has developed into a very fancy
young eventer, winning the 2013 Quirindi CCI2*. Aspire is entered for
Adelaide 3DE at the time of writing and we expect him to step up to
3* early next year. Already there has been considerable interest from
overseas buyers.
• Just Dance R is by Jive Magic out of Richmeed Dancer and was
bought as a weanling in the May 2006 auction by Katina Smith. At the
recent NSW Dressage Championships 2013 Katina and Just Dance R
were medium overall champions and advanced overall champions.
Auction of the Stars Newcastle, NSW
• Jarrah R, by Jive Magic out of Samphire, was sold as a weanling in
March 2007. Jarrah R at the recent NSW Dressage Championships
2013 was reserve advanced champion to Just Dance R.
• Nova Cruz who is by Carbine was sold at the 2012 December auction
and with Wendy Ward in the saddle is winning both Prix St George and
Intermediate I competitions.
• Feldale Regardless R, by Regardez Moi out of Georgia R, also sold
through AOS and is competing very successfully in the lower eventing
grades with Australian international rider Felicity Cribb in the saddle.
Regardless is a stallion and demands a lot of attention.
Without doubt the auction horses are performing brilliantly at a top level
in the Olympic disciplines. Equally, the auction horses are being just as
successful for riders with lesser competition ambitions who nevertheless
share the same passion for horses.
This December we have a wonderful mix of young dressage horses,
competition dressage horses, young eventers, competition eventers and
newly broken youngsters. We have an unusual inclusion of an imported
riding pony who is currently NSW Medium Pony Champion and the National
Elementary Pony Champion. Equally unusual is the imported stallion
Desert Storm who has the most fantastic bloodlines being by Dr Doolittle
who in turn is by Donnerhall out of a mare who is carrying both Florestan
and Rubinstein blood. These bloodlines are probably the best you can get
anywhere in the world at this present time. What makes this stallion even
more unusual is that he stands at just 15.2hh. And as usual we have a
mix of unbroken stock, primarily weanlings with breeding to die for along
with our traditional presentation of a limited number of super quality brood
mares.
I have no doubt that within this collection there are a number of individuals
that have the potential to become a part of Australia’s Olympic history. We
wish everybody the very best of luck.
Cheers,
Heath

A MESSAGE FROM ANN-MAREE
A HORSE FOR EVERYONE
Auction of the Stars has been in the business
of selling dreams for more than 10 years. For
many people, those dreams turn into reality.
Once upon a time, those dreams came in the
form of weanlings, but with a changing market, Auction of the Stars has
changed to accommodate new and adjusted dreams – to the advantage
of you, the buyer!
The best way to turn a dream into reality is to turn it into a goal, and that is
where Auction of the Stars comes in. Heath has demonstrated clearly in his
foreword that horses presented at our gala weekends come through later
in life with successful performances, as many and varied as their owners’
hopes and dreams.
First of all, those equestrians out there with dreams need to define a goal.
Suppose your dream is to one day ride at Grand Prix level. That’s a lovely
dream, but it will never be realised while ever it is a vague dream. Think
about it. What’s to stop it from becoming a reality? Breaking down that
goal, your first step would be to own a horse that is capable of performing
the piaffe and passage required at that level. Auction of the Stars has
historically focused on the 3% of horses that can accommodate that goal.
The next step would be to determine what budget is available to you to
acquire the horse that is most likely to carry you to your goal. A generous
budget would give you an advanced horse. A smaller budget would mean a
younger horse. It might even mean an unbroken horse. It might limit you to
a weanling. It may possibly only stretch to a broodmare, which means you
will have to wait a little longer for the same thing. It is still achievable – but
you need to make a start, not just talk about it or think about it.
No budget at all? No savings, but regular income? You can always apply
for finance through Auction of the Stars and take the horse home with you,
using its presence to encourage your steps towards the next step as you
pay it off over 12 months.
All of those financial considerations should be taken into account when
flicking through the Auction of the Stars catalogue. Research the different
levels of horseflesh available. Research the reserve prices of a variety of
horses to give you some idea of what will be available to you. And then
watch closely – often there are bargains to be had from left field that are
completely unexpected.
Auction of the Stars Newcastle, NSW
A goal has to be specific, so set yourself a target – perhaps purchasing a
horse that will take you one step closer to where you want to be. A goal has
to be measurable – at the end of the auction, has your path to your goal
of riding Grand Prix progressed? Is it attainable now? Perhaps this auction
is the reconnaissance mission and you plan to return next year, savings
plan firmly in place, pen at the ready to mark, this time, real possibilities.
Perhaps you can lease a broodmare and simply buy a service fee to one of
the Auction of the Stars stallions – we find that people will frequently come
up to us and tell us that they saw our stallion five or so years ago, but now
they are in a position to take the next step to their goal.
And of course your goal has to be realistic – that’s where we come in.
Choosing a Grand Prix horse from Auction of the Stars is entirely realistic
given its history of selling horses that make it to the top level. Of course,
you can come and along and spectate, that’s fine too, and we welcome the
crowds that make our atmosphere what it is, but a dream is a goal with a
plan, and a goal is a plan with a timeline.
You may not be able to promise yourself that you will be Grand Prix in six
years’ time or else, but you can barter with yourself and set yourself a time
by which you will have bought something to set yourself on your path.
Of course your goal may be wildly different to the above. Perhaps you
would like to simply own a beautiful horse and compete, or own a beautiful
horse and watch it be trained, take yourself to Grand Prix showjumping
rather than dressage, or breed young horses to sell to professionals, but
whatever it is, Auction of the Stars can take you one definitive and positive
step closer to helping you to be where you want to be.
Give it a go. You don’t know until you try. And you will always be ahead of
those who never try.

RIDDEN HORSE
TRIALLING
OF THE
This is one of the outstanding opportunities offered through the AOS selling
program. We would encourage all riders who are slightly interested in the ridden
horses to pluck up the courage to trial these horses in the official trialling times.
Of course you are very welcome to trial these horses by prior arrangement in the
weeks preceding the auction. Most people do suffer from the thought of riding
in front of a crowd on the official trialling day. Our take on this is that if you are
too embarrassed to look out for your own interests, then certainly nobody else
will. Also, if you have dreams and ambitions, secret or otherwise, and being
embarrassed is the biggest obstacle you have to overcome, then really life is not
too bad. Realistically you will have to overcome much bigger obstacles than just
being self-conscious or embarrassed. Get out there, trial these horses and take
advantage of a great opportunity.
At the auction you do have the unique advantage of comparing one horse against
the other. This comparison opportunity is exactly what happens in competition,
one horse immediately compared against another, a phenomena which is very
difficult to replicate when buying a horse privately. Riding is a passion discipline
and in most instances when buying privately a prospective purchaser falls in
love with a horse and buys it. In the auction situation, a prospective purchaser is
much more likely to weigh up the pros and cons of each horse on a comparative
basis. Of course, falling in love with the horse is a critical ingredient for success
but we at the AOS would encourage you firstly to select your next horse on an
intellectual level, then follow your heart and fall in love with the horse. We all
know of people that have bought horses that didn’t turn out to be everything
they had hoped for but nevertheless, love the horse and persevere even when
it is clear they should sell and start again. Treat the auction trialling as a day at
the office.
We encourage everyone to trial each horse that goes close to falling into their
wish list category. Keep in mind that sometimes a horse that reads and looks
mediocre in the catalogue actually turns out to be lots better in real life than
you had expected. Conversely, some horses will catch your imagination in the
catalogue, and then be disappointing in real life. Once you ride more than two
horses you will lose track of details on each horse so we encourage you to write
notes on each horse immediately after trialling them. Also, watching a horse
being trialled by other riders is a great way of assessing honesty and rideability.
The first official trialling is at 12:30pm on Saturday 14th December and we would
encourage all interested parties to take advantage of this Saturday trialling. This
does give you as the potential buyer the opportunity to have another ride the
next day Sunday 15th December at 8:30am. This also gives you enough time to
research the horses and talk to the owners.
The basic format of trialling is that two or three horses come into the arena and
are shown off for the first five minutes by their vendors, basically warming up
and just gently running through the horse’s routine. Then people wishing to have
a little sit are invited to come forward. Prospective buyers organise to trial a
horse by approaching the AOS representative, who takes a list of names so as to
keep the trialling ordered, and also signing the appropriate waivers. Each trialling
is tailored to each rider’s individual needs, keeping in mind that the first and
foremost priority is safety, and of course the well-being of the horse. It is a very
hectic schedule with two sessions of public trialling plus the auction, all in two
days, so horse welfare is a major consideration. We are of course very aware of
also servicing the riders’ needs.
Good luck, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact
Heath Ryan on 0417 656 636 or email [email protected]

Palomino stallion 2004 17.2hh
Byalee Briar is an amazing opportunity to acquire a highly sought-after European
pedigree without the frozen hassle! Bjorsells Briar 899 was for 7 years a legend,
the world’s number one dressage breeding stallion! On the dam line, Byalee Briar
is out of a Bernstein mare, Bernstein being another Swedish warmblood stallion
and sire of many approved stallions, with offspring in Grand Prix in Europe and
the US. Bernstein was stallion of the year in Sweden and now has offspring with
amazing piaffe and passage. Both Bjorsells Briar and Bernstein are elite-listed
performance stallions and together these bloodlines have now produced Byalee
Briar, who is just beginning to develop what will be an amazing competition trot.
He has inherited Briar’s incredible uphill canter with strong shoulder and knee
action, and shows that ever-essential correct walk. Byalee Briar is now moving
up to medium/advanced level after winning championships at elementary level
on up to 70%. So quiet he can be campaigned by a teenage pony clubber, and his
babies are friendly with great conformation and amazing movement. He jumps,
practises polocrosse, and rides out like a gelding babysitting the young horses.
His youngsters are a joy to ride. And as a bonus, Byalee Briar is a palomino, with
the colour dating back eight generations of Swedish warmbloods. Now AWHA,
ISSA and palomino registered. Live cover only.

Unfortunately Jive Magic was injured and so did not continue his campaign as a

most powerful Grand Prix horse in Australia. Jive Magic won some of the biggest
Grand Prix competitions on the circuit including the prestigious Sydney CDI. As a
sire Jive Magic is experiencing huge success. His very first foal went Grand Prix
and is called Jeff the Chef. Jeff the Chef is campaigning in the USA and we are
hoping will make the US team for the World Equestrian Games in France in 2014.
At the recent Nsw State Dressage Championships the advanced and medium
champion was Just Dance. Reserve in the advanced was another Jive Magic in
Jarrah R. Earlier this year the 5 year old class at Dressage With The Stars was
taken out by Jazzski. Recently the NSW State Eventing Championships were
held in Goulburn and Je Blues shows great promise as an eventing superstar in

quite remarkable paces with a very distinctive walk. Trot is fully suspended with
adefinite ballerina poise between beats. Canter is beautifully balanced and uphill
with super easy flying changes. Fiji R is sensationally bred with his sire Florencio
being both the 5yo and again the 6yo World Champion young dressage horse.
Florencio I is by Florestan I who has emerged as one of the recent very important
dressage lines in Germany and who has a number of Olympic offspring to his
credit already. On the dam line is a mix of Trakehner through the very famous
Hohenstein and thoroughbred through the Hill Hawke line. The Hill Hawke line
has become famous as a dam line by also being the dam line of the Welt Hit line.
Many of the top Australian riders have a Fiji R youngster growing out in their
backyard for the future including riders such as Rachael Sanna.

Flaxen chestnut colt 01/01/2010 15.2hh
A compact and very attractive young colt by British Olympic Grand Prix sensation
Wie Weltmeyer, Wow simply oozes charm. His elastic and correct paces show
scope in his movement with an exceptional hind leg action in both trot and
canter and increasingly flash front leg mechanics. His trainability is second
to none, with his enthusiasm and talent for dressage simply amazing for his
age. Wow eats up the work and begs to be ridden each day. He qualified for
Dressage with the Stars at his first outing at the recent Australian National
Dressage Championships and is training at home through elementary/medium
movements. Jumping should be no problem either as his sire, Wie Weltmeyer,
was known to win 1.4m classes on alternate weekends to his FEI dressage
commitments! Wie Weltmeyer is a seriously versatile stallion with a lovely
temperament and has crossed so well with the TB mare Lawsuit. This young
colt will be perfect for the smaller rider wanting a horse with versatility, scope,
power and presence and is already proving popular as a sire over pony mares.
Those interested in colour should note that Wow has a flaxen mane and tail – a
tail which is in fact white – so we are looking forward to lots of chrome on his
offspring! The first Wow foal is on the ground and is showing his same beautiful
temperament. Wow is that sought-after warmblood stallion, small enough to be
ride comfortably but offering Grand Prix dressage and jumping bloodline to fill a
popular niche market in Australia. For more information and photos of Wow

Black stallion 22/05/08 15.2hh
Desert Storm is a magnificent imported black stallion representing just the very
best Olympic bloodlines in the world today. He is a beautiful type with an artistic
head and neck. His movement is big and correct with super bend through the
hocks and knees. Desert Storm is very strong behind and gives the softest of
rides. He has an outstandingly soft back. Interestingly enough Desert Storm is
also a very fancy jumper. He loves to jump and approaches the fences with
a careful watchfulness and then bascules up over the fences with perfect
technique. Although very careful, Desert Storm is brave and does not stop or
run out. He just loves it! For the breeding connoisseurs Desert Storm is bred
to win a medal at the Olympics in dressage. Donnerhall through himself and
his sons is responsible for influencing the breeding of over half of the top 15
placegetters at the recent European Dressage Championships. Rubinstein blood
is also extraordinary and exerts a whopping 21% influence in the genetics of
these top 15 placegetters. Right now these 2 bloodlines are the “crème del la
crème” of the top Olympic Grand Prix competitors. Then Desert Storm has the
add on of Lauries Crusador and Florestan I who have both produced Olympic
Grand Prix dressage horses. For a breeding buff these are lines to die for. For an
aspiring rider this is a horse to die for. For a collector of quality individuals this is

Burnt buckskin filly 09/01/13 mature 16.3hh
Rush R is definitely the ugly duckling of the auction. She is going to turn into the
most beautiful young dressage lady. Rush R has fine elegant lines and lots of
leg underneath her. She moves very softly with almost a daintiness and scope
combined. In the photo she has a foal coat but by the auction we expect her
to be burnt buckskin in colour and look absolutely stunning. Without being
radically different she is immediately going to be individual through her colour
and quietly beautiful. In the paces department Rush R is right up there with the
best of them. She definitely has paces that would interest an Olympic rider. In
the temperament department Rush R is just super-duper sweet. She would just
love to be someone’s best friend. Rush R is by Regardez Moi who is the most
winning Grand Prix horse ever in Australian history. The mother of Rush R is
by Byalee Briar who is a very talented palomino stallion with great Swedish
bloodlines and a stallion for the future. Perhaps easy to overlook is the Salute
mare Stirling Savannah who in turn is also the dam of Byalee Magic who was
a very successful Grand Prix dressage horse. Rush R does have a wonderful
collection of Grand Prix dressage genetics. Certainly we are extremely hopeful of
great results from this filly in years to come.

Jimson R is immediately an outstanding lot being tall for his age and very well
developed. He has wonderful conformation which makes the heart quicken.
Jimson R is particularly quiet with great poise and a natural soft confidence. He
is quite difficult to chase around the arena and show off his paces. His paces
are however wonderfully balanced with huge scope and a spectacular kick into
the air and subsequent moment of suspension whilst trotting. A brilliant type
that would stand up with the best youngsters in the world. Jimson R is by Jive
Magic who in 2008 won the Sydney CDI Grand Prix. The young stock by Jive
Magic are going very well with Just Dance R winning the advanced and the
medium champion at the recent NSW dressage championships. Runner up in
the advanced was another Jive Magic gelding called Jarrah R. Very interesting is
that Jarrah R is just 7 years of age, has already won a Prix St George and is out

any rider wanting to ride at the top level or looking for a schoolmaster. Currently
graded advanced, Jackson was the Hunter Valley Dressage Advanced Horse of
the Year in 2012. He commenced his PSG career in 2013, with his first Inter I start

schoolmaster for a couple of years before returning to competition with Heath
Ryan in the saddle. Jo’s first start back was at Camden Equestriad in September
2013. He was entered in the pre-novice or EV105 class and placed 5th. Jo
immediately moved up to 1* at Scone CNC in October 2013. He was 6th in the
class. Jo then went to the New South Wales State Eventing Championships at
Goulburn in mid October 2013 and came 4th in the CIC 1*. This was in a field
of 27 starters. Hygain GI Jo does a really nice dressage test scoring over 70%.
Interestingly enough Jo has really nice, clean, straight flying changes. As a show
jumper Jo has lots of scope and is very careful. Jo and Heath have gone to some
straight show jumping shows and placed in the 1.20m classes. Cross country,
Jo is very straight forward and also quite creative in terms of helping the rider
out if the distance is less than perfect. Jo is naturally very quiet and can be
ridden by a very inexperienced rider as well as responding very positively to an
experienced rider. This is a very nice horse indeed who is on his way up and is a

seven consecutive years. Briar is competing at national elementary level and is
currently winning championships with scores of up to 70%. Tessa was broken

F1 Julius Caesar was bred by Jeff Sharp and Melody O’Toole. Jeff bought
Skansen Duschka from Lesley Ann Taylor who at the time was based in South
Australia. Duschka had been bred by Lesley Ann and was by her imported
stallion Du. Lesley rode Duschka to Prix St George/Intermediate I level with
great success. Jeff and Melody put this mare in foal to Jive Magic and F1 Julius
Caesar was the outcome. Jive Magic was of course a very successful Grand
Prix dressage stallion winning some very big competitions with Rozzie Ryan in
the saddle. F1 Julius Caesar is a really beautiful young horse with four white
stockings going all the way up to his hocks and his knees. Julius Caesar also
has a big white blaze going down the center of his face and he is certainly very
noticeable with this much bling. F1 Julius Caesar has been worked primarily by
Hazel Shannon who is in the saddle in the photograph. F1 Julius Caesar has a
good walk, a good trot and a good canter. He is naturally compact and round
and is working on the bit nicely. It is our intention to have F1 Julius Caesar out
in competition before the auction. This youngster has the whole world in front of

Black/brown colt 10/11/12 mature 16hh
Skywalker R is not destiny bound to be our biggest youngster in the auction but
he will create a lot of interest. Skywalker R’s dad, Starnberg, was a fabulous
black imported stallion owned by Pamela Maine. Starnberg spent his first couple
of years here at Ryan’s where he progressed quickly and by the time he was
6 years of age he had mastered piaffe, passage and one time changes. He
was a very cool dude and just had huge aptitude for training. Starnberg did
win two advanced official dressage tests before going back to Pamela to start
his proper competition career. Whilst here at Ryan’s Starnberg alternated from
being a serving stallion to an auction masterclass presentation to a sometimes
competition horse. He was an amazing success. Since focussing up on straight
competition Pamela decided to geld him and so these are some of the last
Starnbergs ever. On Skywalker R’s dam side are two Grand Prix stallions in
Regardez Moi and Richmeed Medallion. Regardez Moi carries the Rubinstein and
Donnerhall bloodlines and Richmeed Medallion carries the May Sherif bloodline.
Skywalker R is a very fine youngster with a delicate head and a beautiful set
in terms of his neck onto his shoulder. Skywalker R has a sensational trot.
Skywalker R does come from a very quiet mother in Ruby and a rising superstar
father in Starnberg. Skywalker R is suitable for a rider wanting a quiet individual

Pumpkin R does carry some different bloodlines which are very exciting. This
is a young mare that does have fabulous conformation and mesmerising
movement. The movement is exciting to watch and goes off like a metronome.
Her paces are special enough that we would expect everyone at the auction to
take particular note of her. A very serious dressage proposition. The genetics
making up Pumpkin R are fascinating. Her father Promise R was a young stallion
who had special talents for piaffe and passage. Her grandfather, Prestige, is
currently on the Australian Grand Prix Dressage Elite List for the World Equestrian
Games in France next year. Her great grandfather, Silvano N, represented Holland
at the Sydney 2000 Olympics in the Dutch Dressage Team. On the dam’s side
of Promise R is Flemmingh who is a superstar Dutch stallion being the sire of
Anky Van Grunsven’s Krack C and also Edward Gal’s world cup winner Lingh.
Equally exciting on Pumpkin R’s dam side is Slinky R who is by Salute. Salute
would be the most influential sire of Olympic horses in Australia today. The grand
dam, Lynx, is a full sister to Londoner who was Australia Prix St George and
Intermediate I champion as a 6 year old. Londoner went on to do Grand Prix

She has never put a foot out of place, doesn’t need to be worked every day
