Sheriff Gives
Families Home
Relief for the
Holidays
The Philadelphia sheriff’s
Office officially announced
on Christmas Eve (December 24) a 30 day postponement of all owner occupied
residential properties scheduled for foreclosure sale at
the January 4th Sheriff’s Sale
auction.
Chief Deputy Barbara
Deeley confirmed that the
postponement was approved
by the Common Pleas Court
President Pamela Dembe as
part of an effort to give financially troubled homeowners
time to qualify for assistance
under President Obama’s new
Emergency Homeowners
Loan Program which is
scheduled to bring more than
$106 million to Pennsylvania in January. She pointed
out that this action was taken
as the result of a cooperative
effort on the part of the
Sheriff’s Office, City
Councilpersons Jannie
Blackwell, Curtis Jones,
Council President Anna
Verna and the Philadelphia
Unemployment Project.
“Sheriff John Green has
always supported initiatives
to help families keep their
homes. He was one of the
first in the nation to call attention to the foreclosure crisis now facing this county,”
Deeley said.
To identify families eligible to participate in the
Emergency Homeowners
Assistance Program, Judge
Dembe said the courts will
hold hearings starting on Jan
13th.
Many of the 1,498 properties scheduled for the foreclosure sale in January could
be affected. Deeley said that
the postponement will have
no impact on the sale of nonowner occupied and non residential properties.
Sheriff Green first called
for a moratorium on sheriff’s
sales in 2004 and his action is
largely credited to the start of
Philadelphia’s Mortgage
Foreclosure Diversion Program that has become a national model for helping families save their homes. Under
this new Pilot Program of the
Court of Common Pleas, if
you live in Philadelphia and
are facing foreclosure, you
may be able to get help with
your mortgage. For assistance

"Keep Them Warm" Coats
Scores of people, including the youngsters in this picture,
can now brave the bone-chilling cold from Ole Man Winter
thanks to a coat drive held recently at Mt. Carmel Baptist
Church.
The drive was the Third Annual "Keep Them Warm"

Santa’s ‘Angel’ Blackwell
Delivers Christmas To 5,000
By Jim Brown
The work of God never
goes undone. Councilwoman
Jannie Blackwell has delivered her greatest gift to those
in need and to those who need
a helping hand during this
holiday season.
Recently, some 5,000
people converged on the
Pennsylvania Convention
Center in Center City to experience the coucilwoman’s
Annual Christmas Dinner For
the Homeless.
Blackwell's work with
the homeless and with families in need shows that she’s
not just a politician looking
for votes come election time,
but a representative that cares
about people.
“We started out wanting
to do our part at Christmas to
share with other people who
have less,” said Blackwell.
“We started at First District
Plaza at 3801 Market Street.
We did it there for about seven
or eight years and then 1,000
people wasn’t enough.”
“Today, we’ve gone
through 5,000 plates of food,”
she added. “These are tough
times and that we’re all one
family under God and that
we need to share and give
what we have. Thank God for
all the volunteers and people
who contribute so that this is
made and possible. And we
wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New
Year.”
The councilwoman was
supported and sponsored by
over 24 contributors to make
this event an enormous success.
As I covered the spectacle, I witnessed a tireless
and energetic councilwoman
walking around, greeting all
the people and posing for pictures with an appreciative
flock.
“Well, this is kind of my
covenant with God,” explained Blackwell. “Working
with homeless people and
people in need, we recognize
that everybody needs to have
a happy holiday celebration.

Hello everyone!...Happy

For A Safer N'hood: Catch Them We Must
Yes, the pictures on this
page are real fuzzy, but it is
important that they be seen.
These are pictures of
people who have done bad
things in making our community a dangerous place to
live and do business.
In the first picture, this is
the picture of two of three
armed men who held up a
business on 500 Block of
North 63rd Street on December 4. They invaded the business with guns drawn and
forced the customers and the
owner to lay down on the
floor.
They robbed the customers of their wallets and took
$500 from the business
owner, according to police.
In the second picture, a
man was asked to leave a
Sunoco gas station at 3750
Girard Avenue by a uniformed security officer on
December 15.
The men left, but returned
shortly with a gun. He shot
the security guard in the back
of his neck and robbed him as
he lay on the ground. The
security guard survived.
His assailant was described as a black male, 35 to
45 yrs old, 5’9" to 5’11",
170lbs, mustache, medium
complexion, wearing a blue
Polo hat, blue hooded jacket,
blue jeans, and white sneakers. Offender vehicle description: Green Chevy Venture
mini-van, unknown tag.
If you have any information about these males , please
call the Southwest Detective
Division at 215-686-3183/
3184. If you see these males,
please do not approach. Call
911 immediately.

I’m a Survivor: Real Stories of Triumph
over Breast Cancer - Rand Somerville
side effects from the treat-
By Lori Ward
The thought of having to
battle breast cancer at the age
of 34 never entered Rand
Somerville’s mind. She was
a busy mom with three children to raise, all on her own.
Like many women, her center of attention was rarely
herself. Keeping up with 2, 8
and 16 year-old boys kept her
moving at what felt like the
speed of light.
For years she had been
seeing information in random
sources about breast self examinations
and
mammograms. Since she was
under 40 and did not have
immediate relatives who had
had breast cancer, it was not
time for her to have regular
mammograms. She decided
that she would try to remember to perform a BSE each
month. She is thankful that
one day in the summer of
1998 she decided to check
her breasts. What she found
that day would change the
course of her life.
Rand felt a lump in her
breast. She had an idea what
this could mean, but tried not
to panic. She made an appointment to see her doctor
right away. Her doctor did a
clinical breast exam and confirmed her finding. There
was, in fact, a lump in her
breast. Rand had breast cancer. “I was speechless. I was
devastated!” Rand recalls.
She never thought it could
happen to her.
By the fall, the doctor removed the lump from Rand’s
breast and started her on chemotherapy and radiation

Smiles For Christmas
Scores of children gathered at the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center for a Christmas party and visit from
Santa.
This annual event was
sponsored by the neighborhood TownWatch organization headed by Ms. Julia
Chinn.
Children danced to the
music of a deejay and enjoyed hot dogs and other
snacks as they awaited
Santa's visit.
And when the party was
over, children met with Santa
and left with gifts to put
under their tree.
The donations were provided by local merchants and
the Toys for Tot program.

Harris Holiday Provides Gifts for Local Youth
State Rep. Ron Waters
poses with the children for
this Christmas picture.
By Nathaniel Lee
Westside Correspondent
The recession has taken a
terrible toll on many families
across the nation. West Philadelphia is no different. While
there are improvements in the
economy, many families still
need help making ends meet.
This is especially true
during the holidays when the
tradition of gift giving place
additional pressure on fami-
where they were treated to
holiday festivities which included a live nativity scene
complete with a baby Jesus
played by a real infant. There
were also performances by
two praise dance groups and
West Phillies own Buccaneer
drill team.
“This was our tenth annual
community party for
lies to provide holiday gifts
community children as well
for their children.
Thanks to Betty Harris, as abused and neglected chilfounder of Betty Harris dren,” said Harris, whose orHomes, Inc., some 300 chil- ganization recently fed some
dren received gifts during her 300 homeless during the
10th annual Christmas party Thanksgiving holiday.
For much of December,
at First Corinthian Baptist
Church, 51st and Pine Streets. Harris’ home served as the
Children from all over the command center where food
area flocked to the church was collected, gifts wrapped
and volunteers organized.
The results? Some 300
children were treated to a day
of entertainment and a visit
from Mr. and Mrs. Clause
who provided each child with
a holiday gift.
“The world needs people
like Betty Harris,” said representative Ronald G.
Waters who spoke to the children and their parents at Harris’ Christmas party.
Others attending the
event were Alicia Burbage,
local entrepreneur and candidate for city council, Claudia
Tucker-Keto of Health Partners who helped sponsor the
event and Lana Felton Gee of
Pepsi Bottling Co. who donated funds to assist Harris
services for area youth.
Toys for Tots, Cradles to
Crayons, Brown’s Shop Rite,
Fresh Grocer, the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles also
chipped in to make this event
a success.

Police/Community Meet To Empower
By Nathaniel Lee
Westside Correspondent
The 12th Police District
hosted its monthly community meeting, (on Thursday
December 8),with issues designed to inform and to help
empower local residents.
This meeting was the first
held after the home invasion
and brutal beating of beloved
activist Marsha Moore, 52,
who was severely attacked
while asleep in her home last
October 29.
Members of the community crowded into the district
(see picture) to hear a presentation on home invasions, a
topic very much on our minds
after Moore’s attack.
“Our main theme this
time was safety and it was
based on what was going on
with on with Marsha Moore;
and we just want everyone to
feel safe and improve their
neighborhoods and blocks,”
said Officer Joe Young, community outreach officer for
the district.
Moore’s husband, also in
attendance, took a moment
to thank everyone for their
support.
Although the minds of
many attendants were on
Moore, there were also other
key topics discussed.
“Also we had the [Philadelphia] More Beautiful
Committee, the Sanitation
department and the Planning
Commission so that people
will know what’s coming into
their neighborhoods,” said
Young.
Once considered one of
the most troubled areas having the highest crime rate in
the city, Southwest Philadelphia has shown significant
improvements with violent
crimes down for the last three
monthsm, according to
Young.
Young believes that the
improvements are not only
the result of additional police officers assigned to the
area and cooler weather, but
also the community's involvement.
“The community out
there are our eyes and ears;
they let us know what’s going on so that helps us out
quite a bit,” explained Young.
How effective are such
community meetings?
“They are very effective,
” said Young. “because they
inform the community about
what’s going on ... in their
neighborhoods and they are
able to defend and help themselves. Basically that’s what
it is all about, empowering
the community,” said Young.
Tara E. Smith, Community Support Specialist for
Town Watch Intergrated Services, agrees.
“They are always informational and there are a lot of
block captains and town
watch members who are represented as well a concerned
citizens. This particular area
is very successful having
meetings and gatherings of
concerned neighbors so its
always a positive event here
at the 12th [Police District] ,”
said Smith.
