Valencia is your destination. Welcome to Valencia, a dream-like city that’s actually real! In a single city, you will be able to experience both history and modernity while savoring the delights of a true Mediterranean lifestyle. Today, Valencia is Spain’s third largest city after Madrid and Barcelona, but over 2,000 years ago, it already shined under the reign of Caesar Augustus. In the fifteenth and sixteen centuries, Valencia wielded economic power throughout the Mediterranean, as its large historic center and busy port demonstrate. This heritage, evident in Valencia’s many ancient monuments, picturesque views and exciting cultural attractions, makes the city one of the most popular destinations in Spain. In the new millennium, Valencia continues to make history with its avant-garde architecture, its warm, welcoming people, its cuisine and its strong economicfabric. The birthplace of paella, one of Spain’s most iconic dishes, the city of Valencia is cooking up a lot more than rice these days! 4 UCV / US PROGRAM Welcome to Valencia Here are five experiences not to be missed in this exciting city: 1 Take advantage of Valencia’s public bicycle rental system and make your way to the Jardín del Turia for a scenic ride through the old, sunken riverbed of the Rio Turia. This scenic park lets you bike safely and avoid traffic as you stop to enjoy sports fields and playgrounds. At its eastern end, the park stretches nearly all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the west, meets the City of Arts and Sciences. 2 The City of Arts and Sciences – Completed in 2005, this truly dream-like collection of architecturally unique buildings could take days to explore. Visit the Science Museum, enjoy an opera or an IMAX movie, spend a day in Europe’s largest aquarium, or just take a stroll and enjoy the incredible sites. 3 Visit the Ciutat Vella or Old City and experience Valencia’s rich historical past. Stroll through perfectly preserved plazas, cathedrals, museums and markets. Be sure to stop at the Plaza del Mercado where you’ll find the old Silk Market, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the colorful Central Market, one of Europe’s oldest, and the baroque-style Santos Juanes Church. 4 If you’ll be spending the spring in Valencia, make sure you’re in town for Las Fallas, a five-day festival commemorating Saint Joseph. Enormous, beautiful, brightly-colored sculptures are erected all over the city. On the final night of the festival, called La Crema, these works of art are burned in a spectacular display of fireworks and music. If you’re coming in the fall, make sure you stop by the Museo Fallero and discover the history of the event, as well as some of the most beautiful ninots, Valencian for dolls or figures, which each year are specially selected to be saved from the fire. 5 Of course you can’t come to town without sampling some paella, one of Valencia’s most famous culinary gifts to the world, and horchata, a drink made from chufas or tiger nuts. Make a real day of it and enjoy your meal on a beautiful Mediterranean beach. Ready for your dream to become reality? With daily flights from Madrid and Barcelona, as well as high speed or semi-high speed train service to/from both cities, Valencia is never more than a few hours away. 5 UCV / US PROGRAM Universidad Católica de Valencia 5 Entiorepra veresti bustius.
