PARTNERS IN COMPASSION 1 LUTHERAN CHAPLAINCY SERVICE www.spiritualcare.org Providing Spiritual Care for Healing and Health since 1914 PARTNERS IN COMPASSION VOL. 30 #1 Winter 2011 Blessing of Hands for a New Hospital The Rev. Mary Carson, Chaplain Harry Werner and Jim Benedict, President of Ahuja Medical Center. I recently had the opportunity to preside at a Blessing of the Hands ceremony for the opening of the new Ahuja Medical Center in the eastern Cleveland suburb of Beachwood. The hospital is a part of the University Hospitals System. As a result of our longterm partnership with the UH Case Medical Center, Lutheran Chaplaincy Service has now partnered to provide spiritual care services for Ahuja. Since we have not yet hired a Director of Spiritual Care, I was asked to preside at the blessing. Our chaplains often do these blessings during Nurses Week or Pastoral Care Week, but I had never had the privilege of doing one. It was wonderful to be a part of this unique event, a symbol of Ahuja’s commitment to providing holistic care to those they serve, which was made even more special by being closely tied to the opening of the hospital. It was quite impressive to see the lobby filled with employees ranging from nursing see Blessing of Hands on page 3 Board Member Spotlight The Rev. Chris McCann currently serves on the LCS Board of Directors and is Chair of the Executive Director Search Committee. “Being involved in the process of hiring a new Executive Director has made me more aware of decisions that a board must make and how those decisions affect the chaplains and institutions that we serve,” he said. Chris is also secretary of the board and serves on the Governance and Personnel Committees. Chris was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1999 and served in a rural fishing village on the shores of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He came to Cleveland in 2003 and completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education at St. Vincent’s Charity Medical Center. He pursued further studies in supervisory Clinical Pastoral Education before deciding to return to parish-based ministry. In March 2005 Chris began his current ministry as Priest-in-Charge at St. Luke Episcopal Church in Chardon. Chris also supports LCS by hosting the annual wine tasting event. In June he will once again open his home and gardens in Cleveland Heights for the third annual wine tasting. All proceeds from this event benefit LCS. Having a background in hospital chaplaincy has enabled Chris to have a deeper understanding of the work done through LCS. “LCS understands the need to provide spiritual care for people who are in the midst of see Spotlight on page 3 2 Code Lavender Fairview Hospital Chaplain Tricia Gilbert is coordinating the Cleveland Clinic’s Code Lavender program at Fairview Hospital. The program was implemented at Fairview by Chaplain Dan Wenger, Director of Pastoral Care, prior to Tricia joining the Fairview team in September. “A Code Lavender is a supportive response to an event or series of events which stresses staff beyond their ability to cope,” Tricia explained. A Code Lavender is initiated by the nurse manager or department head and within 30 minutes a basket is delivered to the floor that includes snacks, aromatherapy lotion, cards and Code Lavender wristbands. The Code Lavender team, made up of Pastoral Care staff, Social Workers, Nurse Managers and other employees, is called and over a 72-hour period the team focuses on supporting the staff by offering various healing services such as touch therapy, Reiki, Healing Touch and massage. The team also provides spiritual support and counseling. Lavender flowers and lavender colors also are displayed in the unit so that others in the hospital know the unit is experiencing a Code Lavender. “A Code Lavender can be called in response to a wide range of events and sometimes a 72-hour code may not be needed, in which case a oneday code may be implemented or a Tea for the Soul is offered where the team provides tea, snacks, music and chair massages,” Tricia said. “This particular type of care offered in response to higher than normal stress levels, can provide the support PARTNERS IN COMPASSION necessary to enable staff to continue performing their jobs to the best of their ability.” Thirteen Code Lavender calls have been made since the program began at Fairview Hospital last July. Tricia said, “People are starting to see the benefits of the program and we are looking at different ways to expand it.” Dan is currently in the process of implementing a Code Lavender program at Lakewood Hospital. “The Code Lavender was very comforting and helpful. The gesture alone was very touching and I think it helped our unit.” Comment taken from evaluation form sent to Fairview Hospital nurses involved in a Code Lavender. News of Note Chaplain Alice Walsh has accepted a call to serve as staff chaplain at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland. Alice, an elder in the United Methodist Church, currently is an Association of Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisory Candidate at The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her journey to becoming a chaplain began while serving as a Stephen Minister at Fairview Hospital more than ten years ago. She will begin her new position in June. We look forward to welcoming her home. Chaplain Dennis Kristof is serving as an interim staff chaplain at Fairview Hospital. Dennis is a Ukrainian Orthodox priest who has been an on-call chaplain at Fairview Hospital. He is the pastor of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox ProCathedral in Lakewood and St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Lorain. Chaplain Robin Schreiber began serving as half-time interim chaplain at Lakewood Hospital on January 3. Robin has provided interim spiritual care coverage for LCS partner institutions a number of times, and we are very appreciative of her willingness to do this kind of ministry. LCS welcomes Gina Radio, our part-time administrative assistant, who began work with us on January 3. Most recently, she served as a marketing coordinator for the former National City, where she prepared marketing materials and helped manage capital improvement projects for clients. Prior to that, Gina was a paralegal for Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in Cleveland. She is enjoying the opportunity to work in the nonprofit sector. Gina is a graduate of The College of Wooster with a degree in English, and of Virginia Marti College with a degree in Graphic Design. She currently lives in Westlake with her husband, Mark. Lutheran Services in America (LSA) has a remarkable opportunity to win a share of $1 million in the Thrivent Choice Winter Voting Event, January 24 – February 28, 2011. Visit the LSA Thrivent Choice Voting page for resources and details: www.lutheranservices.org/ thriventchoice. PARTNERS IN COMPASSION 3 Blessing of Hands continued from page 1 A reception was held at Lakewood Hospital on December 21 to recognize retiring Chaplain David Walker (above, left). A reception was held at Fairview Hospital on December 17 to recognize retiring Chaplain Bill Combs (above, right). David retired after 19 years of service at Lakewood Hospital and Bill retired after 8 years of service at Fairview Hospital. The decision was made in April to merge the Pastoral Care Departments of Fairview and Lakewood Hospitals. Chaplain Dan Wenger, a staff chaplain at Fairview for 9 years, has moved into the position of Director of Pastoral Care. The Fairview pastoral care team includes Chaplain Tricia Gilbert; Father Ed Schwet, the Roman Catholic priest assigned to Fairview by the Diocese of Cleveland; and newly hired chaplain Alice Walsh who will begin in June. A search is currently underway for a half time chaplain at Lakewood Hospital. supervisors to cafeteria workers. Jim Benedict, President of Ahuja, opened the ceremony with an inspirational welcome, which Chaplain Harry Werner from UH Case Medical Center and I followed with a general blessing. Those present were then offered the opportunity to receive an individual blessing with water and scented oil. The Rev. James Friday, a paramedic in the Emergency Department at Ahuja and an on-call chaplain for UH Case, joined Harry and me in doing the individual blessings. As I saw the number of people in line, waiting patiently for their individual blessing, I was reminded of the importance of these professionals and their role in bringing healing and renewal to those they will serve daily through their work at Ahuja. It was a highlight of my ministry with Lutheran Chaplaincy Service to be part of the opening of this state-of-the-art facility. We are looking forward to our role in adding to their environment of care and spiritual healing. The Rev. Mary C. Carson Interim Executive Director AUXILIARY TO THE LUTHERAN CHAPLAINCY SERVICE EASTER CHEER Sunday, April 17, 2011 (Sunday ONLY) 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Unity Lutheran Church 4542 Pearl Road Cleveland, Ohio 44109 Cash and candy donations are requested (NO jelly beans, please) Mail checks to: LCS Auxiliary c/o Dorothy Bode 5249 East 100th Street Garfield Heights, OH 44125 Please note “For Easter Cheer” on check Candy donations should be delivered to: Unity Lutheran Church Sunday, April 17, 2011 between 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Spotlight continued from page 1 health and spiritual crises. When people are ill they are not so worried about their doctrinal positions and how that squares with the truths of religion. They are often left feeling alone and isolated. The spiritual caregiver is a quiet non-anxious presence to accompany people who seek their support. This is a privilege that chaplains are uniquely situated to participate in,” he added. 4 PARTNERS IN COMPASSION BrewFest 2010 Held at Great Lakes Brewing Company on October 7, 2010 Thank You, Jane Jane Doherty and Judy Ziolek display a cake made by LCS Auxiliary member Miriam Bohning recognizing Jane for her ten years of service as Administrative Assistant for LCS.
