Your basis for cost-effective production with
Sinker EDM
In view of today’s forceful requests for increased automation,
the palletizing technology must be considered a top priority
solution. Most of the upgrading potential of machine-tools
has already been exploited. The requirement of reducing
part production time and down-time while maintaining
quality and operational safety, however, can only be dealt
with by resorting to appropriate palletizing and clamping
techniques.
As professional specialists for clamping and palletizing
systems dealing with selected applications we are in an
excellent position to work out production improvements
which offer substantial benefits to our customers.
For over 10 years MECATOOL has been in the business of
designing and producing clamping and palletizing systems
perfectly matched to Wire and Sinker EDM operations. In
this endeavour MECATOOL is always striving to fully exploit
an obvious cost-reduction potential: the elimination of time
wasting machine set-up work.
In this field we MECATOOL specialists are motivated by
design and engineering impulses emanating from the
market as well as from our company’s integration into the
Manufacturing Group of the Georg Fischer concern. This
new constellation moves us even closer to our customers
and provides us with a unique new overall view of their
requirements. This is a real vantage point from which to offer
competent and comprehensive customer specific solutions.
We can thus provide all designers, manufacturing specialists,
production and plant managers with a solid platform
for optimal decision making by offering them standard
palletizing system solutions which are perfectly matched to
requirements of the tool and die making industry.
With the enclosed documentation on the MECATOOL GPS
20-240 palletizing system we would like
to offer our customers relevant technical production
alternatives backed up by our professional assistance.

The GPS palletizing system
The Productivity Path
Whereas the usual clamping systems cover only a part of
practical engineering requirements, the GPS palletizing
system has been redesigned from scratch to deal with all
possible technical contingencies. It therefore meets all
requirements with respect to precision, operational safety
and simple handling.
The standardization of the GPS palletizing system thus
permits you to make full use of the entire range of
machining operations – from metal-cutting or EDM
machining to other state-of-the-art processes such as highspeed milling operations. In this catalogue we provide for
every machining process a matching and simple-to-install
pallet-chuck. The GPS system permits the palletizing of
workpieces or electrodes and thus ensures the organic flow
and continuity of all machining processes. The mechanical
connection of the interface between the machine/
workpiece and the GPS palletizing system offers you
unsurpassed flexibility. No production machine will have
any down-time. The reason being that the time-honoured
on-machine set-up procedures are now definitely a thing of
the past!
The Productivity Path features a series of steps designed to
reduce machining costs.
It uses a process-oriented approach to manufacturing and
thus creates a new working method designed for optimal
flexibility. This new path concept focuses on the need to
position workpieces to known references on the palletizing
system. It’s primary purpose is not simply the holding and
clamping of workpieces but the task of faithfully reproducing
clamping accuracy.
The Productivity Path breaks the machining
process down into four steps or capability
levels:
4. Integration
Integrate operations to reduce operator dependence
and optimize reliability of manufacture.
4
3. Automation
Automate loading process to increase the
number of available machining hours.
3
2
2. Presetting
GPS – the user-friendly system
The patented GPS 20/70 press-in system permits the
central clamping of 32 commercially available standard
electrode shapes, within 2 minutes. The machining
operation can be started right away without the need for
any additional operations or accessories. Furthermore,
the GPS 20/70 press-in system also greatly simplifies raw
materials management.
The design of the GPS 20/70 collets or split collets
surrounding the raw electrode offers the advantage that
the collets will perfectly adapt themselves concentrically.
The insertion imparts to all parts involved an
unsurpassable mechanical strength which will withstand
the highest machining forces.
1. Positioning
Position with known references to improve
machine loading.
Save time!
✔
With the GPS palletizing system you save up to 90% of
the unproductive on-machine set-up time.
✔
You get rid of that painstaking positioning and set-up
work required for every single machining operation.
✔
Instead, the positioning and set-up of workpieces
and electrodes with the GPS palletizing system is carried
out on the separate set-up and presetting station without
interrupting the machining process.
✔
The substantial time savings increase your machines’
productivity.
GPS means precision
The system centres on the aluminium die-cast, highprecision GPS pallet. Thanks to the deliberate use of the
material’s elasticity, the GPS pallet will perfectly adapt itself
to the GPS chuck and fully match its precision. The formfitting design of the GPS palletizing system with protected
reference surfaces provides the required system accuracy
and yields a long service life.

Benefits and Advantages of the GPS Palletizing System
GPS Pallets
• Thanks to the compact design of the GPS pallets all reference surfaces are integrated
into one component part.
- no longer any installation work required to prepare the electrode-holder
- no longer is any shifting of the reference point
• Protected reference surfaces A
- the pallet design completely protects the X, Y and Z reference surfaces against
impact and dirt.
- No dirt or dielectric fluids can reach the reference surfaces when in the clamped
condition.
• The hardened clamping bushing B in the GPS pallet permits clamping without
the use of a clamping spigot in the GPS chuck.
A
B
• The light and stable aluminium pallets protect the reference surfaces of the GPS chuck.
• The patented press-in system allows the palletizing of 25 metric (6 to 50 mm diameter)
and 7 inch-size standard electrode shapes.
• The raw electrodes or workpieces are clamped in the centre C of the pallet.
Turning operations can be effected without any problems.
• The down-thrust effect of the insertion system ensures a strong and safe clamping
of the raw electrodes or workpieces.
• The clamping stresses, evenly distributed over the entire surface of the insertion system,
are ideally suitable for the use of graphite.
• No distortion of the GPS pallet reference surfaces due to clamping of electrode or
workpiece.
C
GPS Chuck
• The GPS chuck permits the clamping of the GPS pallets without the use of clamping
spigots.
• The user can check the clamping force of the GPS chuck with the clamping force
testing unit.
• Periodic maintenance on the GPS chuck can be carried out without loss of reference.
• The GPS machining cubes are machined of one piece.
No shifting of references during heavy machining operations.
• The sealed clamping mechanism of the GPS keeps out fluids and chips.
• The pallet design protects the reference surfaces of the GPS chucks against dirt.

GPS 20/70 Press-in System
GPS Press-in System for the manufacture of electrodes and
workpieces
With the GPS palletizing system you save up to 90% of unproductive set-up time.
The split collets 2 surrounding the raw electrode 1
offer the unique advantage that during the insertion into
the cup-shaped split collet holder they positively adapt to
it thus providing even and concentric holding of the raw
electrode 3 in the holder.
1
... and this is how it’s done:
1. Cut the standard electrode section to the
desired length
2. Bur raw electrode with
hand grinder
3. Insert raw electrode in
suitable collet or split
collet and introduce into
collet or split collet holder
4. Put complete split collet
holder or collet shank
onto arbour-press spacer
and press in with (300 to
700 kg) force
2
3
In less than two minutes a
concentrically palletized electrode will be ready which will
withstand all conceivable
machining forces.
