Michael Schoonaert has always wanted to play
ice hockey ever since first skating on Lake Clare,
where his father Mark Schoonaert lived. After donning skates for the first time he watched his first
hockey game on TV. Soon it was a trip to see the
Chicago Wolves, which led to season tickets for him
and his father.
Michael spent almost every day skating on the
pond or roller blading and practicing his stick handling and shooting skills.
However, opportunities to play were limited. The
high school teams in South Bend have many players
who have been playing since they were six years old
on teams at the Ice Box Skating Rink. It was not a
place where a high school sophomore from Michigan
City High School could learn the skills needed to
play the game when everyone else was so advanced.
His father Mark happened to be talking to a business associate, Mike Blessing, from Merrillville Tent
and Awning Co. and the subject of hockey came up.
It turned out that Mike was a hockey coach and ran
a men’s league that played home games at Midwest
Training and Ice Center in Dyer, IN. The players in
that league were from 23 to 45 years in age and had

of the Chicago Blackhawks. Bobby visited a practice session
of the Portage Ice Hockey team.
played for many years. After finding out that Michael was bigger than Mr. Blessing he invited Mark
to bring Michael over to try a skate with the men’s
league.
Mark and Michael drove to several rinks in the
Chicago suburbs so he could have a couple hours
of skating time since he had never skated on an ice
rink before. In Michael’s first game with the men he
scored a goal. Mike Blessing began talking to coaches and people from the Illiana Ice Hockey League.
The Illiana Hockey League consists of schools from
Portage, Munster, Lake Central, Homewood-Flossmoore and Crown Point. They also play teams from
South Bend, St. Joe, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.
Valparaiso also has a team that is associated with
Michiana Hockey League in South Bend.
This league is part of USA Hockey and follows
the rules dictated by the Indiana State High School
Hockey Association (ISHHA) which covers all 38
High School Hockey teams in Indiana. Many high
schools do not have ice hockey teams, but teams are
formed in areas around certain high schools and
are called “combined teams”. Michigan City is part
of the Portage combined area and must meet all of

requirements as other student athletes in Indiana.
Report cards must be turned in regularly for eligibility.
The next time Michael was playing with the men
the Head Coach from the Portage Ice Hockey Team,
Duane Becker, introduced himself to Michael’s father. He asked which player Michael was on the
ice. When Mark pointed out his son, Coach Becker
asked how many years he had been playing. When
he was told this was only his third time on the ice
he said, “I need to talk to Michael.” Coach Becker’s
Portage Varsity team had finished second in the
State Hockey Tournament, in the 1A high school division the year before.
Coach Becker spoke with Michael and told him
he did not have to know how to play hockey because
part of the mission of the league was to develop
hockey players. There are not that many hockey
players just walking around in Northwest Indiana.
Michael joined the team and began to be instructed
in the art and science of ice hockey. He was taught
the position of defenseman since he is sized (big and
strong) for that position. He started to play with the
JV ( junior varsity team) four practices later.
Two weeks later he played in his second game at
the United Center before a Blackhawks game. He
saw the opulent locker rooms that the Blackhawks
had. The Portage team was escorted thru the players’ entrance, past Dale Tallon the Hawks general
manager and taken to one of the auxiliary locker
rooms. The auxiliary locker room that they were assigned had leather couches and plasma TVs. The
Hawks had - even TVs in the showers!! There was
a jersey and water bottle on a chair for each player,
courtesy of the Hawks. Part of the Portage game
was shown on the big screen between periods at that
night’s Blackhawk game against the Dallas Stars.
The weeks went by and Michael was promoted
to the Varsity Team in January. His coach told him
it was because he had shown improvement at his
position and he was big enough and was not afraid
to check ( bodily block) on the ice. Varsity was much
faster and had bigger players than Michael had
played with but he adapted quickly and began to
learn the game at a higher level with the wonderful
teaching of the four coaches that Portage has, each
one an adult player with experience.

Last month there was a very special day for Michael and the team. It was not publicized because it
was feared a large crowd might show up at the ice
rink because Bobby Hull, the legendary Golden Jet
of the Chicago Blackhawks came one Monday night
for a practice with the team. He arrived before the
6:30 starting time, spent time with each player and
checked out their sticks for length, flexibility, blade
curve and how it fit that player. Michael was told “a
little too long” but otherwise a good stick.
Then Bobby Hull sat on the cold aluminum
stands with some of the parents and watched the
entire 90 minute practice on the ice. He commented
on many aspects of what we saw, told wonderful
stories about his career and childhood and how he
had played as a child in Canada. After practice he
held a group session with everyone and spoke about
the practice, the most important aspects of learning
hockey (“skate, skate, skate”) and spoke with the
young men about how hockey can help them face
many challenges in life. Then afterwards he went
out and a had a beer with the dads that didn’t have
to take their sons home.
Not knowing what to expect from a legend of his
stature, it was surprising how caring he is for young
players, so gracious with his time and truly was an
inspiration for every young player there. The following Saturday, Bobby Hull was being interviewed
on WGN radio, home of the Chicago Blackhawks,
and spoke of his night with the players of the Portage Ice Hockey Team.

The next weekend Michael was named to the JV
all star hockey team and had a wonderful experience playing with the best players in the league and
from Fort Wayne.
What has hockey done for Michael?
Michael had a major speech he had to prepare
for his speech class the next week. He received a
perfect score on every aspect of the speech. He told
his mother after he got home that “Hockey has really given me confidence that I never had before.
I’m not afraid to have to give a speech now, in fact it
might be my favorite part of school.” Not a bad recommendation for the role sports can play in a young
person’s life.

about playing ice hockey and didn’t know how to
begin, give Mark Schoonaert a call and he can get

your questions. The Illiana league is open to players
from 8th grade thru high school, male and female.

VU Adds Masters in Digital Media
PNCWA Spring Luncheon
A Valparaiso University master’s program in
digital media will be offered beginning this summer
to satisfy the growing need for professionals with
skills in digital video and audio production, Web design and desktop publishing.
Students earning Valparaiso’s digital media master’s degree will be prepared for organizations that
use digital content in any combination. The program also capitalizes on Valparaiso’s excellent production facilities, which include two tele-production
studios; a lab for digital video creation, advanced
desktop publishing and Web design; and a digital
audio suite.
In addition to offering expertise in digital media
technology and skills, the program will integrate
management skills and ethical perspectives into
their study.
The 37-credit master’s program can be completed
in 15 months by full time students. Many courses
will be scheduled in the evening to accommodate
professionals holding full- or part-time jobs.

Born in Russia to a family of artists, Viatcheslav
Tchistiline began painting at the age of nine. He
studied fine art as an undergraduate at Kharkov
State University, in the Ukraine and studied painting, decorative art and interior design at the Kharkov Artistic-Industrial Institute. He received his
master’s of fine arts from Ukrainian Academy of
Arts, which has a number of his works in their collection.
Natalia Tchistilina was born and raised in the
Ukraine. She earned her master’s degree in Commercial and Industrial Art-Artistic Design at the
Kharkov State Institute of Arts and Design.
Slava and Natalia painted with oil on canvas in a
realistic manner in Europe. After moving to Canada in 1995 with their daughter, Olga, they changed
direction and began using the ancient encaustic
method.
The early Egyptians as far back as the 2nd century A.D practiced encaustic painting. It is a complicated process, one that depends on precise time
management in the application of dry pigment, hot
beeswax and paint on paper, canvas or cardboard
surface. Slava and Natalia use the sculptural potential of melting wax and pigment to create luminous
three-dimensional worlds.

A Musical Tribute

“Hi Mrs. Wendt.”
I warmly embrace the lovel lady standing in the
doorway. She looks much the same in spite of the 30
some years that have passed since I last sat beside
her on the piano bench for my weekly lesson.
“This is my son, David. He plays the piano.” I
proudly introduce my progeny, the newest pianist
gracing the earth from my point of view, a second
generation of pianists influenced by her gift, passed
on through me.
“Would you like to hear him play?” I ask, nudging
my reluctant son to the keyboard in her Alki Beach
condo, near Seattle, Washington. His six year old
fingers plunk out a pretty good tune, and then he
retreats to the cover of the bedroom where his four
year old sister has been invited to watch cartoons
during our visit.
Mrs. Wendt still walks with a crooked, energetic
gait, her hips lamed
by the same disease
that now bends her
fingers. Her eyes still
sparkle with passion.
Her familiar piano
now dominates the
center of her condo
near her daughter’s
house, 1,000 miles
from the place we
both used to call
home on the southern tip of Lake MichiDoris Wendt
gan. The familiarity
of that piano brings a comforting touch of home.
“Can you play something for me?” I request hopefully, not sure how much the Alzheimer’s has yet
claimed of her.
She sits tentatively at the keyboard of the black,
lacquered baby grand. “Oh, they can never tune this
piano like Larry did,” she laments as she plays a
few notes of a Bach, Beethoven or Brahms composition, too few to be recognized.
“It’s just not tuned right like Larry would have
tuned it,” she repeats, wringing her hands in disgust. Larry, her son, died in a motorcycle accident
years ago, her daughter whispers to me later. He
was her piano tuner and the grief of her loss has
settled there.
“I’ve been playing the piano for my kids since
they were born, Mrs. Wendt,” I report, remembering
the familiar feeling of hoping to please this teacher.
“I play fast songs and they pretend they’re bounding across a big field, scooping butterflies with their
nets. Songs in a minor key make them giggle with
nervous glee. One of their favorites is ‘Song of the
Dark Woods’ by Elie Sigmeister. Remember that
one? They tiptoe around the kitchen, imagining
they are creeping through a scary wood at night.
We hoot like owls as I play.”
I continue. “Do you remember ‘Golliwog’s Cakewalk’ by Debussey? I describe a circus parade to
them as I play it. We can practically see the elephants prancing and the clowns doing tricks. You
taught me all about ‘expression’ in music. I can still
hear and feel it, Mrs. Wendt. And I’m teaching my
kids to hear it and now play it too. David’s already
been taking lessons for a year. Katie will start next
year,” I boast.
Mrs.Wendt smiles, her sparkling eyes dancing to
some now distant tune. “How is your sister, Julie?”
she asks.
“Fine. She still plays the piano too,” I politely answer, but I’m still longing to talk of the way music
makes me feel and the pictures it brings to my mind;
how certain combinations of notes cause tears to unexpectedly well up or invite joyful scenes to scamper
across my mind. And more so as the years go by.
“Mrs. Wendt, you have given me a gift,” I exclaim.
“One that I enjoy every day of my life! And that gift
just grows and grows inside of me and brings new
delights all the time. Thank you for investing your
life in teaching music. Thanks you for passing on
your love of music to me. I can’t imagine life without
this part of me awakened. I’d miss so much!”
“And now I’m trying to pass the gift on to my children. I wanted you to know, Mrs. Wendt.”
I give her a big hug as we prepare to go. I make
my children hug the friendly stranger, who has so
enriched their lives though they don’t comprehend
it yet. But they will, because the music keeps growing inside of me. And I’m so thankful. And I will
keep telling them.
I buckle the kids in their car seats for the ride
home from Alki Beach to Bothell. I turn on the radio
for the hour ride home.
“David, do you hear those 3 notes! Aren’t they
beautiful together?”
“Katie, doesn’t that music make you see a waterfall?”
“Guys, listen to that set of low notes. Those are
called base notes. Do you hear the boom, boom,
boom behind all the high notes?”
And on it goes.
Thank you Mrs. Wendt. Sitting by your side, week
by week, learning to play and appreciate music has
given my life a wonderful soundtrack. I can never
thank you enough for this gift.

This recipe for success brings nearly 5,000 visitors to the fair each year. All will have the opportunity to sample familiar ethnic favorites, such as
eggrolls, quiche and pansit, as well as new dishes
including samosas (a Southeast Asian triangularshaped pastry shell stuffed with spiced potatoes,
onions and peas) and chapati (a special Indian
bread resembling a tortilla). Sweet-tooths are always satisfied by brigaderio (a Brazilian chocolate
fudge candy and all-around crowd favorite) or delicious pastries, cakes, rolls and traditional American
strawberry shortcake with ice-cream.
In recent years, approximately $20,000 has been
raised through the food fair, held annually since

VU Celebrates 150 Years
A year-long celebration of Valparaiso University’s
150th anniversary and its vibrant future will culminate May 2 with a gala featuring award-winning actor John Lithgow and the internationally-acclaimed
Duke Ellington Orchestra.
The memorable evening will honor 150 years of
Valparaiso’s rich history and tradition – including
the inauguration of its 18th president and dedication of the state-of-the-art Harre Union during the
current academic year – and take place inside a formal lawn pavilion on Brown Field.
Lithgow, who will serve as master of ceremonies
for the gala, has ties to Chicago’s theatre community and is a long-time supporter of education. The
actor won the Tony for best leading actor in a musical for his role in “Sweet Smell of Success,” which
premiered in Chicago, and he has performed with
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in its children’s
concert series.
He has written several New York Times best-selling books and albums for children. In addition to two
Tony Awards, Lithgow has won four Emmy Awards,
a Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild
Awards, and is a two-time Oscar nominee.
The evening also will feature remarks by President Mark Heckler, a video tribute to 150 years of
Valparaiso history, music provided by VU talent
and dancing to the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
The Duke Ellington Orchestra, formed in 1923 by
one of America’s greatest composers, tours throughout the world and frequently performs at prestigious national and international jazz festivals.
Also taking place during the gala weekend are a
performance by the VU Chamber Concert Band and
an astronomy lecture and Observatory open house
on May 1; the College of Engineering’s annual Design Expo and VU baseball and softball doubleheaders on May 2; a performance by the VU Symphony
Orchestra on May 3; and the annual VU Student
Art Exhibition at Brauer Museum of Art throughout the weekend.
Valparaiso was founded in 1859 as Valparaiso
Male and Female College, one of the first coeducational institutions of higher learning in the United States. Rechartered as Valparaiso University
in 1906, the institution’s modern history began in
1925, when it was purchased by the Lutheran University Association and became an independent Lutheran university.

I had a recent Twitter experience. The currently
fashionable twitter.com added me to its legions of
followers. Not on its own, but here I admit that I
opened an account there after reading a favorable
review in the New York Times online. I wanted to be
“with it.” My first post was something like, “testing
this out for now,” or something close to that. I made
one additional post and then shifted my attention
to other places on the Web. And I’ve not been back.
Seems I lost my login and password information.
Plus, I have nothing else to say to add to those Twitter posts. I don’t see how others get things done in
the real world if all they are doing is twittering or
tweeting or whatever they call it. I have accepted
being “out of the Twitter loop.” I’d rather spend my
time roaming freely around the internet and telling you about some of my latest finds. Here is this
week’s list:

If you need a dose of anger management after thinking about AIG’s bailout or something just as irritating, head to the smash shack and break something.
This is a bricks-and-mortar place located around
San Diego. I would not be surprised if the concept
became a franchise operation. For a fee, you can
purchase wine glasses, plates, vases, glass ashtrays
and much more to hurl at a specially-constructed
wall. You’ll be wearing a safety helmet and if you
remembered to bring your Ipod, you can turn up
the volume while you watch glass shatter within
the smash room. It might be more fun to participate
with like-minded friends. You could ring up quite
a bill purchasing the available breakable items, or
you are allowed to bring your own breakables from
home (a list of exclusions is on site). I would love
to try this out and will wait for someone to pay my
way to San Diego to test the Smash Shack concept
and report back to readers. By the way, Sarah and
her partner give group discounts for police, firemen,
persons in the military, and for senior citizens.

net). On the heels of Sarah’s smashing operation,

I was disappointed with this website because it did
not have very many tips. I was hoping to bring you
a list of a whole bunch of cleaning sites since we
are officially welcoming spring, but it was too nice
outside and I got distracted. I figured you would get
distracted, too.

finished a two-week series on coupons and frugal
living. Satin Box is the other side of the coin. Its

Singer/songwriter Kevin Blair has been compared to such memorable performers as Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash; however, his incredible and

and Roll is Here to Stay”. Over the years he has
performed with other bands as well as entertained
as a solo performer.
Kevin has gained recognition for his creative talents -- both musically and for his visual artistry for
which he has won many awards. He appears and
performs regularly from the Midwest to Florida. He
has been invited to perform in Israel in February,
2010.

Michiana Annual Art Competition
The Berrien Artist Guild, Inc. announces the 7th
annual Michiana Annual Art Competition to be held
at the Box Factory for the Arts, 1101 Broad St., St.
Joseph, MI. Entries will be accepted from April 1118, with judging on April 22.
The competition is open to artists living in Southwest Michigan, Northwest Indiana, or members of
the Berrien Artist Guild. The entry fee of $30 allows
each participant to enter up to two pieces for judging.
The exhibit and presentation of awards will be
May 15th. This year’s judge is Dr. Marvin Bartel,
emeritus professor of art from Goshen College.
A total of $12,700 in awards will be presented at
the award ceremony on May 15th. This year’s $1,000
Best of Show award is being sponsored by the Berrien Community Foundation. Monetary awards,
sponsored by Chase Bank, will be presented in the
categories of painting, drawing, ceramics, pastel,
photography, digital art, watercolor, and mixed media. The award for sculpture will be presented by
the Krasl Art Center and the award for fiber art,
a new category, will be presented by the Berrien
Towne and Country Quilters Guild.
In addition to category awards, artists’ work will
be eligible for purchase and merit awards, ranging
from $150 to $1,000.
Again this year the $500 Tackett Family Young
Artist Award will be presented to an artist under
the age of 26.

eating green eggs and ham. Believe it or not, most
of the students loved it.
They spent most of the day reading Dr. Seuss
books and making a graph listing their favorite
titles. After reading, the students played with oobleck. Oh what gooey fun they had!
They concluded the day by eating a cake made
and designed by Mrs. Jenn Gronceski. The students
all agreed that the reading Dr. Seuss books is fun
and important.

It’s been a year since Fernwood Botanical Garden
in Niles, Michigan, formed its book group. Today,
the group consists of about a dozen readers who enjoy monthly selections on topics ranging from nature and the environment to botanical mysteries
and gardening.
The variety of reads the group has enjoyed keeps
members coming back for more—from as far as
Chesterton and South Bend, Indiana, and Bridgman and Stevensville, Michigan.
The Fernwood book group has become so tuned in
to what everyone likes that they often bring in the
same books to recommend. That is how the March
book, Looking for Hickories: The Forgotten Wildness of the Rural Midwest by Tom Springer, came
to be. Mr. Springer lives in Three Rivers, Michigan,
and will attend the March 28 meeting as the group
discusses his book. Members who have read it already said they could not put it down, and are anxious for the discussion and to meet Mr. Springer.
Looking for Hickories has been named a Michigan Notable Book for 2009. The Grand Rapids Press
calls the book “perfect reading for the Michigander
who loves the outdoors,” and states that it “goes beyond the area’s flora and fauna into wise insights,
making you glad you live in Michigan.”
The Fernwood book group meets the last Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon Eastern
time, with refreshments served at 10:00 a.m. Donations are accepted each week for the Fernwood library. All are welcome to attend the meetings, even
if they have not read the book selection.

PNC Non-Credit Beginning Golf Class
Purdue University North Central Office of Continuing Education will be offering the non-credit
class, Golf “Fore” Beginners this summer.
The class, taught by a local pro, will meet at The
Clubhouse in Michigan City. Golfers may select to
enroll in sessions meeting on Tuesdays, April 21May 26, from 6-7:15 p.m. or sessions meeting on
Thursdays, April 23-May 28, from 6-7:15 p.m. The
course fee is $179. Clubs and balls are provided.

Golfers will learn basic golf techniques such as

Another Lovely Supper Evening….
Neighbor Patti Marth and I met at hostess Donna
Hennard’s dining table on a recent Saturday evening. Donna’s two chosen guests were Jeanette Eason and Barb Varro, both of whom brought perfect
dishes. It was an entertaining and totally pleasant
evening, with lots of laughs added to each of the
excellent foods you’ll admire below. The Latchford
lady who is “queen of leftovers,” didn’t make it for
the first time ever (this small plates club has existed for about eight years now) – she’d been familyinvited to Florida for that weekend.
Hostess Donna’s excellent Ricotta Stuffed Chicken Breasts
Ricotta Stuffed Chicken Breasts
(the hostess’ lovely plate)
6 chicken breast halves (lightly seasoned)
2 4-oz. packages spinach
1 c. water
12 slices prosciutto, thinly sliced
6 sage leaves
2 T. olive oil
3/4 c. Ricotta cheese
1 T. fresh rosemary, minced
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place chicken
between sheets of plastic or in bag and flatten to
double their size. Pour water in skillet or saucepan and bring to simmer over medium heat. Add
spinach and stir. Cook about 2 min. (til spinach
just begins to break down). Remove from heat
and drain. Allow to cool and add ricotta. Divide
into 5 parts. Place 2 pcs. of prosciutto into “X”
pattern and place breast onto prosciutto. Put
portion of spinach on top. Place 1 sage leaf on
top and dab of 5th spinach mixture. Wrap ham
around chicken breast into a ball. Place in baking dish. Sprinkle with olive oil and rosemary.
Cover with foil and cook 40 minutes. Uncover
and broil 2 minutes.
Cheesy Spinach and Bacon Dip
(outstanding, served by Jeanette Eason)
1 pkg. (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, thawed,
drained
1 lb. (16 oz.) Velveeta cheese product, cut into
1/2” cubes
4 oz. cream cheese, cubed
1 can (10 oz.) Rotel diced tomatoes and green
chilies, undrained
8 slices bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled
Combine ingredients in microwaveable bowl.
Microwave on HIGH 5 minutes, or until Velveeta is completely melted and mixture is well
blended, stirring after 3 minutes. Serve with
tortilla chips.
Sweet Potato Crisp
(another lovely dish, from Barbara Varro)
4 to 5 sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed
8 oz whipped cream cheese
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. finely chopped apples
1/2 c. dried cranberries
1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
3 T. flour
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
2 T. brown sugar
2 T. butter
2 c. honey bunches of oats – crumbled
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat cream
cheese and potatoes with 1/4 cup brown sugar
and cinnamon. Spoon into a 2-quart baking
dish. Top with apples, cranberries and nuts.
Mix 3 T. flour and 2 T. brown sugar in a bowl.
Cut in the 2 T. butter until coarse crumbles. Stir
into crumbled cereal and sprinkle on top of potatoes and fruit mixture. Bake 35-40 minutes
until browned.

Vinegar and Oil Salad Dressing
1/4 c. pure extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp. sesame seeds
1/4 c. raspberry balsamic vinegar
dash of sea salt
1/4 c. water
dash fresh ground pepper
1 tsp. maple syrup
Shake well before pouring.
1/2 tsp. minced garlic
Can be refrigerated up to 3 days
And Patti’s perfect salad
with vinegar and oil
dressing.

Port Caramel Sauce
(I was lazy. I bought chocolate unsugared sauce
and added a bit of port wine)
1/2 c. plus 2 T. granulated sugar
1/2 c. light brown sugar
1/3 c. plus 1 T. ruby port
1 c. heavy cream
1 T. pure vanilla extract
In a heavy, medium saucepan, cook the
granulated sugar over moderately high heat,
stirring occasionally, until melted. Continue to
cook, without stirring, until an amber caramel
forms, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat.
Add the light brown sugar and stir until smooth.
Return the caramel to the heat and carefully
add the port; the caramel will harden slightly.
Cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Add
the cream and cook, stirring occasionally, until
thickened, about 6 minutes. Remove from the
heat and stir in the vanilla. Transfer the sauce
to a pitcher and serve warm. (Make ahead: The
sauce can be refrigerated for up to one month;
rewarm.)
Chocolate Ganache Bread Pudding
(a long recipe, but everybody raved)
5 oz. bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
1-1/4 c. heavy cream
6 T. unsalted butter
1/2 lb. challah, crust removed, bread cut into 3/4”
dice (6 c.)
(McConnell couldn’t find challah, instead used
Meijers’ciabatta)
1 c. milk
3/4 c. sugar
6 lg. egg yolks
3 T. unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
Preheat the oven to 325. Put 2 oz. of the bittersweet chocolate in a small heatproof bowl. Heat
1/4 c. of the heavy cream in a small saucepan
over moderately low heat. Pour the warm cream
over the chopped chocolate and let stand for 5
minutes, then stir until the chocolate ganache is
smooth. Let the chocolate ganache stand at room
temp until set.
Butter an 11 x 8” baking dish. In a small
saucepan, melt the butter. In a large bowl, toss
the melted butter with the diced challah. Spread
the bread on a baking sheet in an even layer and
toast for about 15 minutes, or until the bread is
golden brown. Wipe out the bowl.
In a small saucepan, combine the remaining
1 c. heavy cream with the milk and 6 T. of the
sugar and bring just to a boil. Remove the heavy
cream mixture from the heat. Add the remaining 3 oz. of chopped bittersweet chocolate and let
stand for 5 min., then whisk until the chocolate
is melted.
In the bowl used for the bread, whisk the remaining 6 T. of sugar with the egg yolks, cocoa,
vanilla and salt until a paste forms. Slowly whisk
in the warm chocolate cream until smooth. Strain
the custard into a clean bowl. Add the toasted
bread and toss to coat with the warm chocolate
cream. Let stand for 10 minutes, or until most of
the chocolate cream is absorbed.
Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish. Using a large spoon, dollop the chocolate ganache on top. Bake the bread pudding for
about 35 minutes, or until it is cooked through.
Let the chocolate bread pudding stand for 15
minutes, then serve with the Port Caramel Sauce
on the side. (Make ahead: The chocolate bread
pudding can be refrigerated overnight. Rewarm
before serving.) 8 servings.

A myriad of seasonal delights await attendees to
the 18th annual Prairie Pride Folk Art Show, “Rebirth, Renew, Rejoice, it’s Spring!” on Sat. and Sun.,
April 4th & 5th at Fawn Run Farm in Rolling Prairie, IN.
Featuring the works and wares from over 30 contributors, the show is a perennial favorite source for
quality, handcrafted, primitive and country folk art,
traditional crafts, and select antiques. Displays of
Easter, spring, and garden themed vignettes created by show promoter/folk artist Marcy Dailey of
“Sew Many Things,” showcase the varied offerings.
Birdhouses, hand painted furniture and accessories, soft-sculpture bunnies and characters, hand
painted decorative framed windows, seasonal paper mache` figurines, hand-thrown pottery, dried
flower wreaths and arrangements, hand painted tin
tile plaques and highly scented jar candles will be
featured. Herbal offerings include dried bunches,

“America on Wheels: Vintage Reflections”
On April 4th the Southern Shore Art Gallery will
host the opening of an exhibit of paintings by Merry Johnson. The show is titled “America on Wheels;
Vintage Reflections” and is a series of paintings depicting the different forms of transportation that
were a large part of American culture from 1900 to
the1970’s. Executed in the style of trompe l’oeil, the
paintings are taken from vintage photos that were
chosen by the artist either for their esthetic appeal
or because of the personal affinity for the image.

The series of 30 paintings began in 2007 with a
painting that was exhibited at the Symphony Center and Gallery. It was titled Happy Days and was
so well received that Merry decided to do more. At
first it was difficult to find vintage photos of automobiles or any other mode of transportation. Most
of the ones that she has painted came from friends
or relatives; a few were found in antique shops.
Merry Johnson graduated from Indiana Uiversity South Bend in 2007 with a BFA in Painting. She
has won several awards in the LaPorte County area
and was chosen to hang a painting in the Lt. Govenors’ “Hoosier Women in Art” first juried show.

“The Shape of Things” at VU Theatre
Valparaiso University Theatre Department will
present Neil LaBute’s “The Shape of Things” in the
Valparaiso University Studio Theatre on campus.
The production will be directed by Lee F. Orchard.
How far would you go for love? For art? What
would you be willing to change? What price would
you pay? These are some of the provocative questions explored by Neil LaBute in his controversial
character study which, interestingly enough, is set
on a liberal arts college campus in a conservative
midwestern town. The answers the playwright offers promise to intrigue and even alarm.

13th Annual Native Plant Sale
Wildflowers everywhere on Sat., April 4th as the
Friends 13th Annual Native Plant Sale heralds the
return of spring! Organized by the Friends of Indiana Dunes, the 13th Annual Native Plant Sale blossoms at the Indiana Dunes State Park Pavilion, Rt.
49 at Lake Michigan, in Chesterton, Indiana from 8
a.m. to 1 p.m. Open shopping of all plant stock. Several experienced gardening consultants available to
answer all your questions. Vendors with gardening
books and gardening miscellany on hand, as well
as a variety of free literature. All Native Plant Sale
profit supports the many Friends of Indiana Dunes
programs at the Indiana dunes parks.
The sale features more than 125 plant species,
including woodland flowering plants and ferns; dry,
medium and wet prairie flowering plants; as well as
grasses, shrubs and trees. Most varieties are potted.
Some spring woodland plants are also available as
rootstock or bulbs – great for immediate planting,
regardless of the weather temperatures. All plant
species in the sale are native to Lake, Porter and/or
LaPorte counties, although not of local genotypes as
those are not commercially available at this time.
Our suppliers plan to bring last minute hand-picked
varieties of woodland and prairie plants (in addition
to the order form offerings).

Celtic Band “Mithril” at Acorn Theater
George and Dory Morley of LaPorte are happy to
announce that Mithril, the Celtic/world music band
fronted by their son, Tom, is making a return appearance to the Michiana area.
Since its formation in 2002, Mithril has become
one of the most sought-after Celtic music bands in
the country, performing at festivals, on concert series, and as guests with symphony orchestras all
over the U.S. The band, including Tom Morley on
fiddle, Andra Bohnet on Irish flutes and whistle, Ben
Harper on guitar, and David Hughes on bodhran
(the Irish frame drum) and keyboards, plays with
the precision of their classical training and the enthusiasm and high energy that springs from their
love of the music.
Mithril delivers Celtic music that pushes into
American folk, classical and Middle Eastern territory with a free and fun spirit. The band wowed local audiences in March 2006 with performances in
La Porte and Three Oaks.
The four-piece group of multi-instrumentalists
will play at the Acorn Theater, 107 Generations Dr.,
Three Oaks, MI, on Fri., March 27. The show is at 8

Ella Sharp Museum Art & Wine Festival
The Ella Sharp Museum of Art & History is looking for artists to participate in their annual Art &
Wine Festival. Now in its fifth year, the Ella Sharp
Art & Wine Festival has become an eagerly anticipated event which features the best of local Michigan art, wine, and music. The festival will take
place on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 on the grounds
of the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, MI from 11
a.m.-7p.m.
To be considered for participation, artists must
submit (3) digital files or slides of original work, current resume/biography, an artist statement, a SASE
for the return of slides and the notification of juried
results, and two (2) checks: one for $45, which will
be returned if the artist is not accepted into the festival, and one for $25, which is a non-refundable application fee. All applicants will be juried by a panel
of local artists. Booth spaces are 10’x10’, and artists
are encouraged to obtain their own tenting, which
will not be provided by the festival.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Did you ever read a book that you hated
to see end? That you wanted the story to
go on, to see where the future took those
characters? Well, this week’s book recommendation is like that. And yes, gentlemen, this is “chick lit.” About women - by
a woman. This story will stay in your
mind and in your heart long after you finish the last page.
Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960s.
That’s our setting. Our subject is white
society women and their colored maids.
The voices in this book come from three
women: two colored maids and one white woman…
The first voice heard from is Aibileen, one of the
colored maids. Aibileen’s only son, Treelore, was
killed in an accident at the lumber yard where he
worked. He was twenty-four years old. She’s spent
most of her life raising other people’s children. Now
she is working for the Leefolts: Mr. and Mrs. and
baby girl Mae Mobley. Mrs. Leefolt is only interested in shopping for new clothes, and going to all
the social events in Jackson. She hardly pays attention to her daughter and soon Mae Mobley becomes
more attached to Aibileen.
We go through the day with Aibileen, from walking in the kitchen at 8 a.m. and making coffee, to
getting Mae Mobley ready for the day, to polishing
the silver, washing and waxing the floors, cooking
and baking until 4 p.m. when she makes her way
back home. Aibileen is a soft spoken woman who
dearly loves Mae Mobley and puts up with all the
guff given out by Mrs. Leefolt and the ladies who
visit her. One of Mrs. Leefolt’s friends, Miss Hilly,
is shocked that she doesn’t have a separate toilet
for the maid. It just isn’t right! So Mr. Leefolt gets
a handyman to throw together a small room next to
the carport out back of the house for Aibileen to use.
Minnie, the next voice heard from, is Aibileen’s
younger friend and maid out of work at the beginning of the story. Out of work because old Mrs.
Walters’ daughter, Miss Hilly, doesn’t like her and
is carting her mother off to a nursing home so she
can sell the family home and get rid of Minnie. Of
course, she tells all her friends that she fired Minnie
for stealing--that should show her! Fortunately for
Minnie, she manages to get a job from Mrs. Celia
Foote, a newcomber who hasn’t fit into Jackson society. She wants Minnie to teach her how to cook but
keep Minnie’s employment a secret from her husband. Minnie is scared Mr. Foote will come home
early, find a colored woman in the house and kill
her!
Miss Skeeter is the young white woman heard

from. She lives with her parents on a cotton farm. Since they are old blood they
are part of Jackson society. Civil rights
are just making a mark on the country
at this time and Miss Skeeter, fresh from
college, begins to question their way of
life in Mississippi. What she wants to be
is a writer and she wants to interview
the maids and get their stories, but using
false names, of course. What is all this
fine talk leading to? You’ll be surprised!
There’s an old saying, “Walk a mile in my
shoes” and that’s exactly what this book
will make you do. See life from the perspective of a black maid, and even that of the society
women who have taken the separation of the races
as a matter of fact for so many generations that
they can’t see the forest for the trees. But what will
happen if Miss Skeeter’s book is actually published?
Maybe now she will start to see the world through
another’s eyes, someone who has been treated as
one of no importance, without value and without
a voice…expendable. But then again, maybe that’s
exactly what will happen to her when her “friends”
find out what she’s been up to…
These three women’s voices ring pure and true.
Never have I read a book that touched a subject so
completely.
This is Kathryn Stockett’s first novel. She was
born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. In an afterword to the book she tells of her family maid
Demetrie:
“I’m pretty sure that no one in my family ever
asked Demetrie what if felt like to be black in Mississippi, working for our white family. It never occurred to us to ask. It was everyday life. It wasn’t
something people felt compelled to examine.
“I have wished, for many years, that I’d been old
enough and thoughtful enough to ask Demetrie that
question. She died when I was sixteen. I’ve spent
years imagining what her answer would be. And
that is why I wrote this book.”
