Children’s centres and
maintained nursery schools
Children’s centres offer a wide range of
services to parents with children under
five years old including: early years
education and childcare; health and
family support; and parenting advice
and guidance. Many children’s centres
are open 48 weeks a year and offer
full-time childcare.
There are four maintained nursery
schools in the borough that offer early
years education as well as children’s
centre activities.
Pre-schools
Pre-schools are either private or
voluntary-funded organisations that
provide early years education and
childcare for children aged between
two and five years old. They offer
morning or afternoon sessions.
Independent schools
Nurseries and Daycare Map
The majority of the independent
schools in the borough have nursery
classes that offer full or part-time early
years education. The service is usually
offered to children aged between twoand-a-half and five years old.

A place in the nursery of a maintained
school does not guarantee children
a place in the reception class of the
school; parents will still need to apply
to this through the primary school
application system.

Minimum Free Entitlement
The Minimum Free Entitlement
(MFE) offers three and four year old
children up to 15 hours of free parttime education per week. Places are
available in all local authority nursery
schools and nursery classes in primary
schools. These places are available
to children in the term after they turn
three years old.
The minimum free entitlement is also
offered in many pre-schools, private
nurseries and independent schools.
These providers will offer up to 15 hours
of education per week, but may charge
for additional services and childcare.
The early years services that take part
in this scheme are marked in the lists
below with the initials MFE.
These are private nursery schools that
offer early years education to children
aged from two-and-a-half to five years
old. Some of these nursery schools offer
full-time daycare to parents of children
aged between birth and five years old.
