‘Standard for Breeding Dogs’
WO WEEKS ago we covered the advice
being given to puppy buyers by the
Advisory Council on the Welfare
Issues of Dog Breeding. At that stage we
expressed the view that some of the
recommendations were a bit ‘over the top’.

This week we look at
the
Council’s
much
heralded ‘Standard for
Breeding
Dogs’.
It
attempts to set out formal
recommendations for the
minimum standards which
they say should be met to
provide good health and
welfare for all dogs
involved in breeding. This
‘Standard’ has been sent
with the Council’s stamp
of approval to Defra civil
servants,
MPs
and
Ministers. It therefore
cannot
simply
be
dismissed by dog breeders
as
something
to
completely ignore.
In what some people
would regard is an
extremely
arrogant
statement the Council says
“The Advisory Council
does not consider any
other current standard
published in the UK to be
comprehensive enough to
fully protect the welfare of
both breeding stock and
their puppies.” That, for
most people who are
actually involved in
responsible dog breeding,
would
probably
be
regarded as a matter for
debate!
It has to be said that
most of the requirements
are perfectly sensible and
would be accepted as such
by
almost
every
responsible breeder.There
are however, as well as
some of the very odd
requirements
and
recommendations
to
puppy buyers outlined in
OUR DOGS two weeks
ago, a number of issues on
which true, experienced
and practical dog breeders
would take very strong
exception
with
the
Advisory Council.
The Standard is divided
into two sections. The first
section outlines absolute
requirements and uses the
word ‘must’ throughout.
The second section details
recommendations
and
uses the word ‘should’
Only one caesar
and no
‘line breeding’
Another issue which
may upset some breeders
is that the Advisory
Council demands that
“bitches that have had a
caesarean section may not
be bred from again unless
a veterinary surgeon
certifies
that
malpresentation of a puppy
was the sole reason for the
surgery.” Presently the KC
allows puppies born from
a second litter by
caesarean section from a
bitch to be registered.
In
addition
the
Advisory Council states as
a must: “Bitches may only
be mated to a dog when
the
Coefficient
of
Inbreeding (COI) of the
resulting puppies as
measured from a five
generation pedigree would
be lower than 12.5%.”
This, if ever accepted,

Age for
breeding
One of the most
controversial requirements
that the Council has
outlined is that: “All dogs
and bitches must be at
least two years old before
they
are
used
for
breeding”. It is easy to see
that this might be sensible
for breeds that mature late
or for breeds with a
specific
problem
or
condition that cannot be
identified until the breed is
two years old or more. But
for many people this
requirement
will
be
regarded as simply ‘for the
birds’ and will put the
Advisory Council on a
collision course with the
average
responsible
enthusiasts of many breeds
– especially those of early
maturing breeds. Many
perfectly
responsible
people believe that it
makes far more sense to
breed from young and
healthy bitches at the age
of say eighteen months
than to breed from them
when they are older, at say
the age of five or six.
would effectively ban half
brother to half sister
matings and grandparent
to grandchild matings.
Some breeders might find
that acceptable. But
12.5% would also ban a
large number of other less
obviously closely bred
matings which would be
regarded
simply
as
sensible ‘line breeding’ by
many
serious
dog
breeders.

Special win for Movado
helped the timing of the show and
even with puppy groups and veteran
groups judged in the big ring as well
as the groups themselves, the show
managed to finish in good time on
all three of the days Backing onto
the admin block is the traditional
judge’s lounge, nicely appointed and
with some very up market executive
loos at the back, all flashing lights,
music and flat screen TVs to entertain you whilst enjoying your comfort break. Very high class!
HE SUN shines on the righteous, we are told, and
for nearly three days that’s exactly what happened
at this popular and well organised event held at the
delightful venue of Newby Hall near Ripon.
T
It was only around about 4 o’clock
on Sunday when the rain clouds gathered and the heavens opened, of
course they did, the trade stand holders were just beginning to pack
everything away and what right do
they have to do that in dry weather!
Thankfully the main arena was an
excellent well lit haven in the large
tent out front of the admin offices
belonging to Secretary David Guy
and his hard-working team, and so
the groups and many stakes finals
could be judged in comfort whilst
the rain came down – and didn’t it
just come down at that stage.
The honour of judging the main
event, best in show, fell to the UK’s
resident Swede, Liz Cartledge, who
had enjoyed a busy few days judging some of the groups as well. After
putting everyone through their paces
she eventually strode over to the
Bouvier Des Flandre, Ch I'm Special
Inessence Movado At Kanix, owned
by Fiona Lambert & Hughes and
handled by that man about dog
shows, Dave Killilea, whilst
Reserve Best in Show went to the
Norwich Terrier, Ch Ragus Merry
Gentleman, owned by Lesley
Crawley & Matthew Oddie, who are
in a rich vein of form on the summer
circuit of shows having just won the
top spot at Richmond.
That was not the end of the judging, however, as the press photographers had to hold their horses for
two more decisions. Best Puppy in
Show was awarded to the Cocker
Spaniel, Jayzander Maid By
Request, owned by Mrs. Wilding

and Best Veteran in Show was the
Labrador Retriever, Sh Ch Am &
Can Ch Salty Dog Of Tampa Bay,
owned by Mrs Hess. The puppy
groups had been gone over by
replacement judge Valerie Foss,
except for gundogs where Moray
Armstrong stood in because Mrs
Foss had been judging a gundog
breed that day. The veteran groups
were judged by Jack Watson who
was in the past a very successful
breeder and exhibitor of Fox, Cairn
and Sealyham terriers.
Very obedient

Swedish import
Liz Cartledge must have felt at
home with two fellow country folk
judging at Darlington. As the UK’s
resident Swedish import Liz is a
popular judge who knows her own
mind. She was joined at the show by
the delightful Hans Almgren and
well known Moa Persson both from
Sweden, and they both had a good
stint of breed judging…including of
course, Swedish Vallhunds for Moa!
On the OUR DOGS stand you see
Emily Mitchell’s Standard Longhaired Dachshund, Ch Bronia Lotario
JW won his 17th CC with Best of Breed and Group 3, and Andrew
Gullicks’ Norfolk Terrier, Ch Jaeva Made in Gold won his 10th CC with
Best of Breed at the age of 18 months old, judged by Terrier specialist Mrs
Sue McCourt.
Jason Lynn & Stone’s Standard Poodle Afterglow I Should Coco with
Tolpi won her 3rd CC with Best of Breed, she is the first Champion offspring of (Ch Del Zarzoso Salvame from Afterglow), last year’s Top
Utility in the UK and Number 3 all breeds.
Mum-to-be Amy English had a great day with her Schnauzer puppy,
Vesper Saltus Ze Zahrabske at Nujax winning his second Best Puppy in
Breed and shortlisted in the Utility Puppy Group. Charlotte Page and family are having a great run at the moment with their team of Dalmatians, at
the show her youngster, Winflash Elle’s Belle’s won 1st Junior Bitch and
Reserve Bitch CC, her kennel mate Winflash Born to Be Wild won Limit
Bitch also on the day.
Charles Lewis Crooks won Best of Breed with his Standard Wirehaired
Dachshund Barmaud Rufus won 1st in Open Dog, Best Dog and Best of
Breed under Mrs P Rhodes. Claire Millward’s recently crowned UK
Champion Greyhound Windspiel Northern Steel for Alouann won Best
Dog and Best of Breed at the show and was shortlisted in the Hound Group.
Amanda Ellis made a new Champion in Brittanys at the show with her
male Eastonite Bacchus, judged by Mrs M B Reeves, Amanda also had a
great day in Pugs winning the RDCC with Regencylodge Hebe Eastonite

Meanwhile in Pugs, Louise Brooks Lowe’s Ch Pugalicious
Provocateur JW won his 10th CC & 9th Best of Breed and Clodagh
Fallon travelled from Ireland to the show with her female Clodana
Serenity Belle and won a 2nd CC in Pugs. In Akitas, Patsy Hollings judged
and awarded an 8th CC and Best of Breed to Jenny Killilea and Arlene
Clure’s Ch Redwitch Back for Good, who has won Back to Back Best of
Breeds in just seven days handled by Dave Killilea who had a great weekend winning Best in Show with Lambert and Hughes Bouvier Des Flandres
I’m Special Inessence Movado At Kanix, back to the Akitas and the
Redwitch success did not stop there, Jenny Killilea and Arlene Clure’s Ch
Redwitch Perfect Ten won the Reserve Bitch CC and Reserve CC winners stakes overall on the day, and their youngster, Redwitch Born This
Way took the Reserve Dog CC and Best Puppy in Breed followed by
Puppy Group 4. He is the winner of multiple CCs and still in Puppy and is
already an all breeds group winning Akita, all this at 9 months old.
Winning the Bitch CC in Akitas was June Forman’s Kitsune Don't Push
It Calicelesti, a first CC for this female.
A great weekend for the two famous Dunhill ladies at Darlington, starting on Day 1 and Michaella Dunhill-Hall’s Papillon, co-owned with breeder Jo Davidson Poston, Spinillons Spark In The Dark won Best Puppy in
Breed under Frank Kane, and later on Liz Dunhill won Bitch CC with her
leading Top Shiba Ch Vormund Fashion Baby, Reserve Dog CC, Best
Puppy in Breed and Utility Puppy Group 1 with Vormund Johnny Depp.
In Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Fantasa Blonde Neville wins his 2nd
CC and Best of Breed under Paul Wilkinson, handled by Michaella
Dunhill-Hall. Finally in Rottweilers, Michaella’s top winning Rottweiler,
Ch Fantasa Smirnoff Ice won her 17th CC, 16 with Best of Breed and
Group 4 and is the current leading top Working Breed for 2012. A fantastic weekend for team Fantasa and Vormund. Liz Dunhill’s Rottweiler breed
record holder, Ch UK NZ Ch Aus Ch Rolex Rumour Has It By Fantasa,
produced the Dog CC winner at the show in Mandy McClure’s Mankell
Russian Roulette, his 2nd CC on the day, a great win for Mandy and her
partner Paul Routledge.
a lot of schedules going out for
forthcoming shows and you also
hear comments about which judge
someone will exhibit under, so to
bring in new faces or a sprinkling of
knowledgeable and experienced
overseas judges can help freshen up
entries nowadays.
Chairman Sarah Allsopp confirmed to me that Darlington was in
fact up...not a lot…but up on dogs
which has to be good news nowadays. The show boasted a total entry
of 7181 dogs despite only having
about ninety breeds with CCs. The
show makes a feature of its non-CC
breeds and this year scheduled at
total of nearly a hundred breeds
without tickets. Darlington show
encourages these breeds with no
CCs by holding special stakes classes each day for Reserve Best of Sex
in these breeds and with entries
taken on the day. These classes
were this year sponsored by
Eukanuba and were very well supported. The same system operates
for Reserve CC winners with nearly
£100 of prize money each day and
even that competition was sponsored – this time by the Society’s
accountants Mitchells Grievson.
Amongst the visitors to the show
we cannot forget the local boy now
resident in Spain, that’s David
Mchale back from Spain judging his
favourite breed, Bulldogs and then
visiting family in the North
East…but not taking part in the Great
North Run which was organised on
the same weekend as Darlington!
Also in from Spain, Sylvia Burditt
going over the Beardies before heading back to the sun.
The show has moved on a long
way since the days when it was virtually the last of the one day
Championship shows with its
plethora of stakes classes. Then it
was held at South Park in the town
centre of Darlington where it gained
popularity with the locals, but not
for all the right reasons. Now we are
treated to a trip into the North
Yorkshire countryside where the
grounds of Newby Hall are opened
up with kind permission of Mr. Mrs.
Richard Compton. Richard is a
charming host and he informed me
that the hall had been in the family
since 1720 and the lineage dated
back to round about 1690; the land
used by the society is grazed by
sheep for much of the year but the
BIS area had been roped off and
given special treatment to achieve
the more even surface and closer cut
that looked so well in the main
arena, which also housed it own collecting ring.
Well done Stakes
There can be few societies that
boast so many (sponsored) stakes
classes offering not only rosettes,
but that rare thing in dog showing
nowadays….prize money!
PA Announcer Terry Pearson was
kept busy announcing everything
from the Kennel Club Breeder
Stakes to the Newby Stakes and
even the Classic Chambers Open
Stakes! (That’s the people who supplied the loos if you are not in the
know!) It certainly gives dog folk
more opportunities to compete at an
event, a good thing especially if you
have to travel a long way and much
better to get more out of the day
rather than disappearing straight
after your class.
David Guy and his erstwhile
Assistant Stuart Plane listed the
many stakes classes for me but then
hit me with the key figure, £3,500 in
prize money. Just what Mr. Killick
was asking for in his column last
week.
The Society also tries to take care
of the newcomers to our game and
for this they must be given great
credit. As Newby is open to the public, there is every likelihood that visitors will make their way to the dog
show, especially as a courtesy bus
was in operation in the grounds.
Once there it can be a bit of a mystery so each day, Christina Chapman
one of the Societies helpers, hosts a
meet and greet meeting for anyone
who wants to find out more about
the show scene. OUR DOGS also
helped out by producing a handy
booklet entitled ‘Showing your dog’
in association with Darlington. The
great news this year was that at least
three of last year’s ‘newbies’ actually attended this year as fully fledged
exhibitors! Maybe only small steps,
but positive ones at that.
The paper was also pleased to assist
the Society in the ongoing production of archive material this year
featured on two attractive pull up
banners in the open plan organizers
office. Terry Pearson and Sarah
Allsopp had been the driving force
on this project, raiding first the OUR
DOGS archives and then local
libraries…watch out for more on
this in 2013! The office area is an
airy open area which contains the
Secretaries desk, Treasurer, PA corner, Enquiries, the Kennel Club
information desk and area for
Breeders Stakes entries…..just off
this is mission control of the stewards’ office, meticulously ticking off
ring progress throughout the day.
This attention to detail undoubtedly
For the first time ever, obedience
classes were held on the other side
of the main driveway and this
attracted an additional 300 dogs to
the show. It was good to see some of
the obedience people shopping in
the trade stands as well as the good
sprinkling of general public.
You get the feeling that this is
only the beginning of the improvements and ideas coming from this
progressive society. They have now
bedded into the grounds and
although heavy rain on the
Wednesday made for some late
adjustments it all seemed to work
well; whether this is the final layout
we will wait and see after the committee has its debriefing meeting to
assess this years event. Good to hear
that President Alan Mather is better
after feeling unwell half way
through the show.
Well done the Rottie people who
all supported a sponsored silence on
day 2, and also to Liz Dunhill presenting a cheque to Rottweiller rescue after her hard work at Blackpool
towing cars off the muddy car park
where she received a number of
donations.
A good formula
It’s events like Darlington that
remind us what a pleasure it is to go
to a well run dog show. After all that
is why most of us go to dog shows –
to enjoy ourselves. Of course the
good weather experienced by
Darlington makes a huge positive
difference. But shows like this one
with plenty of good organisation,
lots of space, good layout, goodsized rings and tight and slick timing
are on course to succeed.
Perhaps the most important
requirement however for anyshow
of this size is for a Committee and
leadership that cares for its customers - the exhibitors and trade
stand holders. Darlington seems to
have that in abundance and that
must be a good formula for the
future.

Hound group
THE HOUNDS were the first Group to kick off the
proceedings, and I was very happy with the overall
quality. The group was complete except for the Wire and
Min Wire Dachshunds, and my shortlist comprised the
PBGV, Beagle, Longhaired and Smooth Dachshunds,
Greyhound, Hamiltonstovare, Irish Wolfhound,
Elkhound and Whippet. Three bitches and six dogs.
They went round the large BIS ring together in size and speed order and
I then moved them once up and down individually. Still happy, willing and
full of energy was the PBGV, Ch Soletrader Peek A Boo, owned by Sara
Robertson and Mrs Doherty, and handled by husband Gavin. I judged her in
the breed very recently at City of Birmingham, and I have also placed her
second in the Group at Midland Counties. This was her day - she couldn’t
stand or move wrongly. The ultimate showgirl, she would, I am sure, go
forever - in fact she moved up a gear and got better the longer the judging
went on!! Feminine and well balanced, shown in marvellous condition, firm
and fit.
A young Irish Wolfhound, Goodson’s Moralach The Gambling Man JW,
followed her into second place. Lovely shape and outline, covering plenty of
ground, moving with a long, easy stride. Splendid bone and depth of body,
well muscled, good coat texture. At only 16 months, this handsome, calm
youngster impressed me very much - with a little more maturity he will be
even better. Third went to Emily Mitchell’s lovely Longhaired Dachshund,
Ch Bronia Lothario JW, whom I had previously given a Hound Group.
Clean silhouette, good keel, quality head, well coated and conditioned. Just
lost out on the last up and down when he didn’t keep quite focused. The
veteran Elkhound, Middleton’s Ch Kestos I Spy At Graythor JW ShCM,
now 9 years old, is quite remarkable for his age, and a real laster. Still enjoys
his showing, kept in impeccable condition with his fit, strong body, certainly
bright eyed and bushy tailed.
Liz Cartledge ■
Terrier group
THE TERRIER Group was 25 strong with just the Bull
Terrier BOB absent, hotly contested and most enjoyable
to judge. I restricted my cut to eight but could easily have
kept in two or three more for further consideration. All
trying for a place in the final four were the Border
Terrier, SFT, Sealyham, Skye, Irish, WFT, Kerry Blue
and Norwich. Five dogs and three bitches.
All good performers, showing and moving with plenty of Terrier spirit
and animation. Stepping out in front was Crawley & Oddie’s Ch Ragus
Merry Gentleman, as good a Norwich as I have ever judged. The Ragus
kennel has produced so many top class Norwich Terriers over the years,
including BIS winners, and Lesley should be very proud of her achievements in this numerically small breed. Gentleman, as well as being a typy
Norwich of good size and balance, he also has a superb temperament for the
show ring, as keen at the end as at the beginning. On the day his jacket was
good, his eyes sparkling with anticipation and his movement absolutely true.
He could not be denied the top spot in this form.
I have always had a soft spot for a game and high spirited Kerry, and
Ramsay’s Torums Calico Jack was certainly full of bounce with that dare
devil attitude, ready for anything. He took a bit of settling down on the move
but once Ron got him into stride, he took off with plenty of power from his
big quarters. Masculine head and expression, keen, in hard condition, lovely
coat, colour just turning and used his neck to best advantage. He slotted
comfortably into second place.
Third went to Leung and Almeida’s Ch Travella Staer Craft, WFT bitch
handled by Richard Allen. Real little aristocrat, presented to the last hair and
in great form. Quality head, expressive eyes, tail on top, shortest of backs,
totally feminine and so confident.
Not far behind was Barker and Averis’ Irish bitch, Ch Fleet St Fire And
Ice, completing a very superior quartet. Racy and very typy, she too showed
with composure, lovely head and eye and well presented.
Liz Cartledge ■
Utility group
COMPLETING THE first day’s judging with the Utility
Group, it was obvious that some had waited a bit too long
and were less on the ball. However, nine made it to the
second round, the Akita, Std Poodle, Schnauzer, Shar
Pei, Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, Tibetan Terrier, Min Poodle
and Dalmatian. More girls than boys here (five bitches
and four dogs).
The Dalmatian, Alexander’s Ch Offordale Chevalier, was in superb
condition, hard and fit with wonderful muscletone and for me was a clear
winner. Effortless mover and very sound, clean neckline, well carried tail,
good bone and feet, typical head, very smart and interested.
Holmes-Leak’s Ch Michandy Great Expectation By Navarre, a black Min
Poodle, was my runner-up. Lovely bitch to go over, gorgeous head and eye,
bright showgirl, moved well both ways, tight feet, good coat texture, well
handled.
Hot on her heels was Green’s Tibetan Terrier, Ch Verony French Charm,
who finished third. Good honest bitch with no exaggerations, very good
head, serious expression, best of coats, well conditioned and topline held on
the move.
Making up this foursome was Tumppila’s Multi Int Am UK Ch Chic
Chiox Ta Sen Knockout, a Lhasa Apso dog with lots of self esteem, jaunty
mover, plenty of coat, masculine head, well handled, showed well but not
quite as concentrated at the TT at the end.
Liz Cartledge ■
Working Group
DAY TWO, and a glorious, hot and sunny day.
Numericaly this was the smallest Group of the show, and
my selection here was, the Alaskan Malamute, Bouvier,
Boxer, Leonberger, Neapolitan Mastiff, Rottweiler, St
Bernard and Siberian Husky. Sexes evenly split with four
dogs and four bitches.
I did like the BOB Newfoundland bitch, but she was not moving quite
Best in Show
THIS WAS my first visit to Darlington Ch Show since
the Sam Pascoe days as Secretary, and also my first
viewing of the venue at Newby Hall. What a great
setting for a dog show, lovely scenic countryside, a well
planned layout but most of all I noticed and felt the
warm and friendly northern atmosphere.
Talking to other judges during my three days there, this
show is fast becoming a real favourite and we were made
to feel most welcome from start to finish. The Committee,
led by Chairman Sarah Allsopp; David Guy, the youngest
Championship Show Secretary in the country, has a downto-earth approach, plenty of new ideas and has already
made an impact and big difference to this society. I don’t
know all the Committee Members, but they all seemed to
be working efficiently behind the scenes, and easy to spot
in their jade blazers. I felt very honoured to be asked to
judge five Groups and BIS and thoroughly enjoyed my
time in the north east with good friends old and new.
The final line-up, I thought, looked most impressive,
including the two Group winners from the last day, the
Pointer bitch, Siddle’s Sh Ch Wilchrimone Ice Maiden JW
and Griffon dog, Ch Beauview Royal Male, sent forward
by Frank Kane and Stephen Beardwell. Ice Maiden looked
wonderful in profile movement, full of class and quality
and was handled to perfection by Amelia Siddle. I judged
her in the Puppy Stakes at Blackpool last year and was
very taken with her then - delighted to see that she got her
title and is now also a Group winner.
I have long admired the smooth b/t Griffon from the
ringside, his attitude is what we would all want in a show
dog! Defiant and full of confidents, he looked like a ‘mini
Rottweiler’, eyes full of expression, standing his ground
and trotting his stuff like any of the big guys.
It had to be a special performance on the final run to
decide my winner and runner-up. Ultimately the Bouvier
came out tops. Sound and workmanlike, he really looked
the business in the hands of handler supremo, Dave
Killilea, powering round the ring in perfect harmony. I
have never seen this Bouvier look better than he did today
- body, coat and conditioning perfection. Not to be
outdone was the gorgeous Norwich Terrier, in high spirits
going round the ring in great style. It gave me enormous
pleasure to award him RBIS. In my view these two are
great ambassadors for their respective breeds. They both
had to work hard to edge in front of five other worthy
Group winners. Thank you Darlington for a great show.
Liz Cartledge ■
Best Puppy In Show
THE PUPPY Groups had been judged by Mrs Valerie
Foss and Moray Armstrong, but I had the pleasure of
selecting the overall winner and reserve.
All seven pups, bar one, were clearly still enjoying their
big moment. The young Cocker Spaniel bitch, Wilding’s
Jayzander Maid By Request, was a real gem and I loved
everything about her, superb outline and proportions,
lovely head, eyes and expression, sturdy body, good bone,
moved and showed nicely with a merry tail. She was my
winner, followed by the cheeky Norfolk Terrier, Phillips’
Blakens Xpress Yourself. Really promising dog puppy
with good head, super body and coat texture, confident
and positive on the move.
Liz Cartledge ■
true in front today so had to be left out of the equation. I watched my eight
go again and had no hesitation in giving Lambert, Murray & Hughes’
Bouvier, Ch I’m Special Inessence Movado At Kanix (Imp) the Group.
Quite outstanding and when he is in the right mood he is impossible to
ignore. Such a marvellous mover, absolutely in step with his handler, Dave
Killilea. Real athlete, great body and quarters, correct topline, well fitting
coat, all male in head and attitude with that touch of arrogance.
Not easy to follow that - well, the Leonberger, Niall & Rothery’s Ch
Devenheath Court Jester JW ShCM did! Handsome fellow I have judged
and liked before. Now in his prime, well constructed and another who has
that air of superiority that stallion dogs have. Strong body, well presented
coat, calm, intelligent expression, moved well.
Third place I gave to Rees’ Wintermelody Miss Dynamite At Amical
(Imp). A most appealing young Siberian Husky bitch, hard and fit with well
muscled quarters, good neck and topline, at one with her handler on the
move. Sensible showgirl with feminine expression.
Michaella Dunhill-Hall piloted her Rottweiler bitch, Ch Fantasa Smirnoff
Ice into fourth position. Well proportioned, eager and willing showgirl with
plenty of drive in movement, shown in hard condition, most ably handled to
look her best.
Liz Cartledge ■
Pastoral group
THERE could have been 28 BOB winners present, but in
the event, the Anatolian Shepherd, Groenendael,
Malinois, Komondor, Maremma and Cardigan Corgi
were missing. I am not at all complaining - the 22 breed
representatives I had gave me plenty to think about. I
had seven who survived to a second round, the Australian
Shepherd, Briard, Hungarian Puli, OES, Pyrenean,
Samoyed and Swedish Vallhund (four bitches, three
dogs).
I then felt it almost became a ‘two horse race’ between the Samoyed and
Australian Shepherd, and they ended up in that order. It is hard to believe
that the Samoyed, Bobrowski’s Ch Vandreen Imperial Hermioni By
Berezniki JW ShCM, is 7 years old. She looks as fresh and eager as any
youngster, beautiful smiling face, clearly loves the show ring. She never
carries a really full coat but has the most lovely silhouette, strong body, well
set and carried tail, sound and happy.
The young Aussie bitch, Allan & Harlow’s Ch Allmark Fifth Avenue JW,
gave it her best shot, vivacious and responsive showgirl who impressed on
the move and feminine in every way, well proportioned. Obviously has time
on her side, great style and potential.
The Puli, Grover’s Ch Rockisland Crest Of A Knave For Cordemops,
secured third place. I was amazed to find he is 10 years old! Steady lad with
correct brisk movement, firm body, good topline, well corded and conditioned. Did not look half his age.
It was a battle between little and large for 4th position - Swedish Vallhund
bitch, Ch Starvon Rumour Has It; or Pyrenean, Bayliss’ Ch Shiresoak
Wizards Legend. In the end I gave it to the PMD, with his beautiful head,
great bone, lovely coat and presentation, but the Vallhund was certainly not
disgraced in this quality company.

Gundog group
IT WAS a pleasure to judge the gundog group at my
local show where the warm Northern hospitality and the
beautiful setting of Newby Hall parklands provide an
excellent atmosphere and it was good to see so many waiting to watch the group and BIS.
I kept my shortlist to eight dogs and apart from these I like also the Vizsla
bitch, full of quality and sound, just a little flat on the move and the
Weimaraner who is an excellent mover but lacked body on the day; the
Chesapeake also impressed for his type, substance and coat. The shortlisted
dogs were the young GSP of true breed type and excellent movement. With
a little more maturity of body he will go even further.
The Golden Retriever was lovely to go over but then sadly threw in the
towel on the move. The Flatcoat has excellent type in his raciness of outline
but his front action let him down later. The Welsh Springer bitch looked and
moved well, she is just a touch long for my idea of balance.
The black and tan cocker was going to be in the placings until the last circuit when she flagged a little, a black and tan of true cocker type with excellent rib and free from exaggeration presented as always in superb condition.
So that left my final four;
In fourth place the Irish Water Spaniel Carruthers & McDaniel’s Sh Ch
Am Ch Whistlestop's Elements Of Magic, much improved since I judged
him at an early show in his career in the UK. He has come on in rib and
chest, has an excellent coat and when he settles has a good stride. He was in
a very ebullient mood and not helping his handler
In third place the American cocker Crummey & Lynn’s Afterglow Pearl's
A Singer, a lovely young bitch full of breed type and excellent movement,
she has developed well since she won her first BOB under me and with a
few more months of maturity will go further
In second spot the Labrador Hess’s Sh Ch Am & Can Ch Salty Dog Of
Tampa Bay, full of quality and type and very sound and accurate on the
move. At the end of a long day his topline was just not as firm as usual but
he was the one to press the winner today.
And for me the outstanding winner of the group on the day was the
Pointer bitch Siddle’s Sh Ch Wilchrimane Ice Maiden JW whose profile
movement and style of going was beautiful to see. Her body is all curves
and she is very well put together with correct oval bone and feet and good
tail and action. She really enjoyed the big ring and put on a great performance here.
Frank Kane ■
Toy group
IT WAS a great privilege to judge such a strong Toy
group at this well organised and congenial show. I felt all
those that I short-listed, and a couple that I did not, had
a strong case to take the top spot.
My short listed group were the Bichon, the Smooth Coat Chihuahua
Amarose Tink Attitude JW, the Griffon, the Jap Chin Pochinka Polka Dot
Dekobras, the King Charles, the Maltese Ch Benatone Gold Boots, the
Papillon, the Peke Ch Yakee Ooh Aah Cantona and the Pug Ch Pugalicious
Provocateur JW
My final choice for the group was the outstanding black and tan Griffon
Brabançon Ch Beauview Brave As A Blizzard, with his wonderfully compact outline, striking carriage and large open featured expressive head. He
moved with a balanced, accurate driving action and showed his stunning
outline moving and standing right to the end, which just edged him to the
front of the queue.
In 2nd spot the young Bichon Pamplona Brings It On with his lovely
expressive head and strong pigment, proud carriage and balanced proportions. His effortless action on the move, silky coat and immaculate presentation made him a very strong contender.
In 3rd was the Papillon Ch Denemore Story's Echo At Tussalud, I found
her delightfully refined whilst well made throughout, well animated,
tremendously accurate light in action on the move, with beautiful large ears
and expressive eyes.
And in 4th the King Charles Ch Maibee Theo, with his lovely domed,
expressive open featured head, his well proportioned, strongly made body
and relaxed elegant profile on the move.
