The black and white photos of School of Dentistry alumni surround photos of current students – many of our 2011 scholarship recipients. Students of the school’s past have generously supported students of the present through contributions to scholarships and service to the school. They have and will continue to inspire current students to support the school and its students in the future. In our 2011 spring magazine, we thanked and recognized our adjunct faculty. Several names were omitted from the listing in error. We thank all of our adjunct faculty members for your service to the VCU School of Dentistry and regret the omission. Dean’s Greeting Dear Friends, It’s an exciting time to be a part of the VCU School of Dentistry. The VCU Rams helped to thrust our school into the public eye, and our students are living up to their reputation of being the best and brightest. Our plans for the next 10 years, in line with those of VCU as a whole, include focusing on the people that we are here to serve. All of us – from new faculty members to sage professors and from patient care coordinators to administrative assistants – we’re all here because of our students. We support them through their academic careers, guiding them through new and difficult material in the field of dentistry and helping them as they begin to see patients and lay the groundwork for their future practices. I have made it my personal priority to bolster student scholarships. We’re putting our money where our mouth is. This year, we awarded more scholarships to more students than ever before – that’s a trend we’re committed to. You have the opportunity to support these promising future dentists too. I encourage you to visit www.dentistry.vcu.edu/reflections/ to discover more about the many existing student scholarship offerings, including our new General Scholarship Fund and several other new additions (see page 2). Don’t see anything that resonates with you? Create a new named scholarship, and begin helping the students of today and tomorrow in the way that you deem most appropriate. We haven’t forgotten about the other piece of the puzzle – our educators. Without our outstanding, world-class faculty, our school would not exist. Taking a cue from VCU president Dr. Michael Rao, we are focusing our efforts on creating endowed professorships and chairs that not only attract the best and brightest new faculty, but also contribute to the development of our current faculty (see page 4). We also must thank you, our alumni and friends, for making the VCU School of Dentistry a priority in your lives. Many of you contribute to the school by serving on boards or serving as adjunct faculty, and we are constantly grateful for your generosity. With your help, we raised more than $2 million in the past fiscal year with 70 percent coming directly from dental alumni. In fact, our alumni hold the distinction of having the highest percentage of donor participation across the entire university. As we progress further into the new school year, we face new challenges and anticipate many exciting successes. We are poised to attract the brightest students and faculty to help our school continue to develop and grow. With your help, I know that anything is possible. Again, thank you for your support. I look forward to seeing you next time you visit the VCU School of Dentistry. Best wishes, David C. Sarrett, D.M.D., M.S. Dean, VCU School of Dentistry & Associate Vice President for Health Sciences, Faculty Affairs Your Investments in People Supporting Our Students Through Scholarship Awards VCU has set out upon its quest to be the premier urban, public research university focused on advancing knowledge and student success. The VCU School of Dentistry is committed to playing a role in the quest for distinction. has made private gift support and the equitable and fair distribution of student scholarships a priority. With Dean Sarrett’s guidance, the VCU School of Dentistry is well on its way to growing its scholarship offerings. One key tenet of achieving this mission is to increase scholarship offerings to attract and retain the best and brightest students. As the cost of dental education continues to rise, and the amount of support VCU receives from the Commonwealth for the school has continued to decline, providing student scholarship funds is vital. Dean David Sarrett One recent offering is the School of Dentistry General Scholarship Fund. This fund, still in its infancy, is the first of its kind for the school. The General Scholarship Fund was created in response to the need to offer more students scholarship funding and is designed to award as many scholar- August 2010 2010-2011 Year in Review Your Investments in People 2 VCU School of Dentistry (8/28/10) Students Join Forces to Fight Oral Cancer – The VCU School of Dentistry Chapter of the Student National Dental Association (SNDA) organized and promoted the 2nd Annual Oral Cancer Walk, bringing students and community members together for the cause. More than 70 energetic walkers showed up for the event at Byrd Park’s Vita Course – nearly doubling participation from 2009’s opening event. The amount of each scholarship and the number of scholarships distributed will be a direct result of contributions within each fiscal year. Thanks to generous donations in the past fiscal year, awards from the General Scholarship Fund were given to 20 deserving students. Elegibility to receive awards from the General Scholarship Fund is determined by VCU School of Dentistry’s Scholarship/Awards Committee. Students must be in good academic standing, and preference is given to students who are not receiving or eligible for other major scholarships, grants or awards or students with critical financial need. The General Scholarship Fund has broken new ground at the VCU School of Dentistry in more ways than one. For the first time, dental hygiene students, in addition to all currently enrolled D1, D2, D3 and D4 students, are now eligible to receive support through the new fund. Tuition has never sufficiently covered the cost of dental education here or anywhere else. In fact, there is a $27,159 gap between the cost of education and tuition cost per student. The VCU School of Dentistry depends upon the generosity of donors to offset these mounting costs for students. Currently, 90 percent of dental students at VCU receive some sort of financial aid. NEW SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED IN 2011 Alden and Sara Anderson Fund In the spring of 2011, the school awarded more than $90,000 to 67 students. With support from alumni and friends, these numbers will continue to grow, and more and more students will lessen their financial burden. Student scholarships have been and will continue to be a major priority for the VCU School of Dentistry and a major thrust in VCU’s quest for distinction. Revere, Jr. Professorship for Faculty Excellence Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. The future of the dental profession depends on excellent teachers and access to innovative information. Professorships are central to both, and the beneficiaries are dentists, dental students and the patients they serve. Seeing a need and a solution, Dr. James C. Burns (D.D.S. ’72, Ph.D. ’80) and Dr. John A. Svirsky (D.D.S. ’73, M.Ed. ’79), both of the Department of Oral Pathology, established the Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Lectureship Fund through the VCU Dental Faculty Practice Association. The endowment provides resources for a lectureship for the school. Drs. Burns and Svirsky responded to the growing need for continuing education while honoring Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. (D.D.S. ’65), a faculty member who embodies the ideals of the school. The endowment demonstrates appreciation, gratitude and support for the faculty, both full-and parttime, through continuing education and faculty enrichment programs, utilizing lectures, workshops and presentations by recognized experts. Topics and speakers representing broad interest to the majority of the faculty, both full- and part-time, are the planners’ goals. Today, the lectureship is on course to achieve its goals, but it is not yet self-sustaining. Additionally, the initiators of the fund met with Dean David Sarrett and determined that it is crucial not only to make the endowment self-sustaining, but also to expand what the endowment offers. Expanding the Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Lectureship Fund to a professorship is one key to meet the school’s priority of faculty development. This expanded endowment will contain both a lectureship component, to dispense current knowledge to hundreds of faculty and alumni, and a component to provide annual incentives to faculty members with five or fewer years of full time teaching. The incentives may provide awards for teaching excellence, and funds may be used to assist the development of their teaching skills. Faculty development is so vital for innovative and developing faculty members. Thrust into a teaching capacity with little or no educational training, new dental faculty members may be at a major disadvantage. Their development as teachers may be slow and frustrating as they have many responsibilities in a school, like ours, that has fewer faculty members than other schools of our size. It is crucial for the future of the profession to invest in faculty here at VCU if we expect them to continue as teachers. At the national level, as more dental schools open or expand their class size, it is imperative that September 2010 (9/27/10) 'Virginia's Top Dentists' Listing Features 15 VCU Faculty Members, 327 Alumni – More than half of the Commonwealth’s highest rated dentists got their start at the VCU School of Dentistry. Furthermore, by raising additional funds for new faculty development, the second component of a professorship will ensure that we are assisting faculty as they endeavor to become the best they can as they devote their careers to educating our next generation of dentists here at the VCU School of Dentistry. Dr. Revere embodies the ideals that we are striving to enliven by expanding the endowment made in his honor. A professorship may be the best way to honor a beloved faculty mem- ber who has given his entire adult life to the school—even after official retirement. Alumni and friends may build this endowment that bears Dr. Revere’s name so that we may continue to advance the school that he helped make great. Dr. Revere has given of himself for so many years so that thousands of young people can lead a good life as they help others to better their lives through improved oral care. Please contact Edward G. VCU maintain an advantage in the retention of qualified faculty. Creating qualified faculty and retaining them will be the major thrust of the newly expanded Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Professorship for Faculty Excellence. In 2012, the principle in our current lectureship endowment will be approximately $100,000. This endowment will generate approximately $5,000 for an annual lecture. By expanding the principle through philanthropic The first annual Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Lecture. Here are the stories of just a few friends of the school who are paving the way for success for our faculty, our students and the patients they serve. Dr. Mary Frances Stavropoulos (B.S. ’73, D.D.S. ’82) Dr. Franci Stavropoulos has lived her life according to her family’s motto “To Be Educated.” Now she hopes that her motto will inspire dental hygiene students to be committed to their education and achieve greatness in their careers. Her interest in dentistry was piqued in high school during her visits to the orthodontist. “I loved to watch the assistants,” said Dr. Stavropoulos. It was her orthodontist that suggested she look into dental hygiene. So, after high school graduation, she went to I hope that other dental “hygiene grads will give back to their profession and serve as role models for others. ” Dr. Franci Stavropoulos in front of the Dental Hygiene office suite, named for her mentor, Dr. Ann Dinius. October 2010 (10/15/10) White Coat Ceremony 2010: Students Charged with Making a Commitment to the Dental Profession – The DDS Class of 2013 and the Dental Hygiene Class of 2012 participated in the honorable tradition of receiving their white coat as a welcome into the clinical aspect of their dental education. Dr. Gus Vlahos (D.D.S. ’81) spoke to the students about ethics, professionalism and the overall commitment to the dental profession. Both classes were presented with their white clinic coats by members of the faculty and then recited their respective pledges. Dr. Gus Vlahos 6 VCU School of Dentistry Indiana University for two years and then transferred to the VCU School of Dentistry to study dental hygiene. While in dental school, Dr. Stavropoulos interacted with then Director of Dental Hygiene, Dr. Ann Dinius. “I credit her with my determination, my motivation and always wanting to be at the top of my game. She wouldn’t accept anything less.” After two years of hard work and study, Dr. Stavropoulos took a public health position in New York City. Her career eventually took her to the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center where she learned a great deal about how to treat the dental needs of severely mentally ill patients and gained experience in a hospital environment. Another career jump brought Dr. Stavropoulos back to Virginia where she worked at McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center and noticed that dentistry was intricately involved in the treatment of patients. Her thirst for knowledge inspired Dr. Stavropoulos to apply once again to the VCU School of Dentistry with the goal of becoming a general dentist and returning to the VA for a resi- dency. But, during her fourth year of dental school, she was “bitten” by the oral surgery bug after extracting a tooth in the pediatrics clinic. Dr. Stavropoulos achieved her specialty degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and now teaches it at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. But she never forgot her roots at the VCU School of Dentistry. “My experience in dental school helped me to develop a real professional commitment to dentistry and to pursuing specialty training,” said Dr. Stavropoulos. “I knew that I wanted to continue my education and be in an education setting.” She was mentored throughout her career and through dental school by many professors at the VCU School of Dentistry, and now her goal is to serve as a mentor for others, especially dental hygiene students. Last year, Dr. Stavropoulos chose to establish a bequest of $100,000 to the Division of Dental Hygiene – the largest gift ever made to the program. She hopes that her gift will help to (10/29/10) Friends of Dental Education Dinner Celebrates Your Gifts at Work – More than 200 friends of the School of Dentistry, including alumni, donors, students, faculty members and VCU leadership, gathered at the newly renovated Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for the annual Friends of Dental Education Dinner. Guests were treated to attract and retain a talented faculty, provide opportunities for research and continuing education and enhance students’ educational experiences. “I hope that we can make the VCU School of Dentistry the number one dental hygiene school in the U.S.” Dr. Stavropoulos has done her part to help her alma mater, and she hopes that her fellow dental hygiene alumni will do the same. “The dental hygienist is such a critical individual and member of the dental team,” said Dr. Stavropoulos. “I hope that other dental hygiene grads will give back to their profession and serve as role models for others.” Dr. Stavropoulos gives back to future dentists, serving as an associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Dean David Sarrett shared how gifts from alumni and other friends of the school are put to work, and Crystal Hayes (D4) told her story as a scholarship recipient. Dean David Sarrett and D4 student Crystal Hayes 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 7 Your Investments in People Dr. George A. Oley III (D.D.S. ’79) Reba Oley knows a thing or two about dentistry. She spent time working in her father’s Richmond dental practice as a teenager. So, as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech where she volunteered at a local free clinic, Reba knew right away that a little girl’s tooth could be saved instead of pulled. Because the clinic didn’t perform root canals, she did the next best thing. She volunteered her father, Dr. George Oley, to drive from Richmond to Christiansburg to do the job. A dutiful and charitable father, Oley did what he was asked. That experience brought back memories of his own undergraduate days at Virginia Tech as well as his days at the VCU School of Dentistry, where things were a lot different than they are now. “When I was in school, it was kind of like a fraternity initiation,” he remembers of dental school. “Teachers were stern, and the last thing I would have done was contribute to the school. But as you get older, you remember those times fondly. The fact that you experi- Dr. George Oley (left) enjoyed the Final Four game in Houston with Tom Burke (B.S. ’79, M.P.A.’95), executive director of the VCU Foundation. November 2010 (11/16/10) For Massey fundrasier, ‘stache equals cash - During November, male students in the School of Dentistry Class of 2014 grew, groomed and styled mustaches for “Mustaches for Massey,” a fundraiser for pharyngeal cancer, or cancer of the larynx. To raise money, students found sponsors to donate money to the cause for as long as they kept their facial hair during the monthlong event. All proceeds went go the Massey Cancer Center. The “Mustaches for Massey” campaign’s goal was to raise at least $1,000 with hopes of continuing the event annually. 8 VCU School of Dentistry The Class of 2014 raised a total of $2,500 for the Massey Cancer Center. enced bad times makes you appreciate the good times. I guess it was a teacher’s job to be tough and demanding. “That’s changed now. Teachers have become communicators and they appeal to students. That’s one of the things I’m most proud of about the school today. It’s turned a corner and become a nurturing environment for a young dental mind.” Dr. Oley and his wife, Siham, have made a $500,000 gift to the School of Dentistry, which includes a $150,000 scholarship in the name of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Oley, Jr. Additionally, a portion of the gift is designated to the Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Professorship for Faculty Excellence Fund. “I have a lot of respect for Dr. Revere,” Oley said. “I don’t remember a time when I didn’t see him impeccably dressed. I saw him in Houston at the Final Four and there he was in jeans and a headband with a painted face. That was pretty cool.” The Dr. James H. Revere, Jr. Professorship for Faculty Excellence Fund provides resources to meet the growing need for continuing education while honoring Dr. Revere (D.D.S. ’65), a faculty member who embodies the ideals of the school. Oley is proud to honor both Dr. Revere and his parents through his gift to the school. “My father had always wanted me to become a doctor,” he remembers. “I didn’t want to be an M.D. because he had always been sick most of his adult life. He died when he was 47, and the last thing I wanted to tell somebody was that they had cancer. The worst thing I could tell them, as a dentist, was that their tooth had died.” Dentistry is shaping up to be a family affair with the Oleys. Mrs. Oley works in her husband’s practice, and both children are pursuing dentistry. Reba has completed her first year at the VCU School of Dentistry, and son George is studying for his dental school admission test. The School of Dentistry is grateful for the support of its alumni, especially gifts that provide student support, said Dean David Sarrett. “The Oleys’ generosity is significant,” he said. “Scholarships make a huge difference in helping dental students because there are a lot of expenses that can’t be paid for with borrowed funds. Dental school is becoming more and more expensive every year, as there is less and less state support.” - Nan Johnson Dr. Oley provides dental services to his patients at Drs. George A. Oley, Paul J. Shaia & Associates. Dr. and Mrs. Oley are members of the VCU Founders’ Society. December 2010 (12/3/10) David C. Sarrett, D.M.D., M.S., Named Dean of VCU School of Dentistry – David Sarrett, who served as interim dean since early 2010, was named dean. Dean Sarrett will focus on building the research enterprise of the school with an emphasis on oral and head and neck cancer and bioengineering in collaboration with the VCU Massey Cancer Center and other VCU schools. He also will work to enhance the education, research and patient care outcomes through growth of the faculty in strategic areas and through faculty and staff development. David C. Sarrett, D.M.D., M.S. 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 9 Your Investments in People Dr. Pamela F. Regimbal (D.D.S. ’86, Orthodontics ’88) Dr. Pam Regimbal has taken her affinity for children and her fond memories of her classmates at the VCU School of Dentistry and established funds that will yield positive results for years to come. At a young age, Dr. Regimbal enjoyed art, and, with a push in the right direction from her mother, she decided to pursue the art and skill of dentistry. She enjoyed the entire dental school experience – especially the camaraderie she shared with her fellow classmates who mutually supported each other through the sometimes grueling days of a dental education. As graduation drew near, and with a brand new baby in tow, Dr. Regimbal made the decision to pursue a certificate in familyfriendly field of orthodontics. During an off-site rotation as part of her residency, she experienced something that would motivate her to take action. “I realized that here, in our own area, kids desperately need dental care. But they can’t always Dr. Pam Regimbal in the Pediatric Dentistry@VCU Practice. '68; OMFS, '71), the immediate past president of the American Dental Association, spoke at the Dr. Cyril R. and Evelyn F. Mirmelstein Ethics Lecture. His presentation focused on the role dental students play in the ethics of dentistry, describing them as the "new guardians of the profession." 10 VCU School of Dentistry Dr. Tankersley fields questions from D1 students (left to right) Dean David Sarrett, Dr. Ron Tankersley, Dr. Terry Dickinson and Dr. Charles Cuttino. get the care they need because their parents may not have dental insurance or funding,” said Dr. Regimbal. She saw a need and created a solution. In 2001, after many years of successful practice, she established the Children’s Dental Endowment Fund. The fund, which has grown over the years through Dr. Regimbal’s continued generosity, provides educational resources for our dental students to teach children about improved oral care. Importantly, the Children’s Dental Endowment Fund was used to create the Pediatric Dentistry@VCU Clinical Digest, a reference manual designed to aid students and residents in gaining the knowledge and skills neeed to provide dental care for infants, children and adolescents, including those with special health care needs. “Thanks to Dr. Regimbal, we’ve been able to create a straightforward, nuts-and-bolts review of pediatric dental content for students to review prior to certain experiences they may encounter in February 2011 (2/24/11) New Technology Means Greater Accuracy in Dental Implants – The VCU School of Dentistry is on the cutting edge of technology as one of the first universities in the world to utilize image guided navigation software designed to achieve the the pediatric clinic,” noted Dr. Tegwyn Brickhouse, Department Chair, Pediatric Dentistry, Associate Professor and Research Director. “And they can use the manual as a quick reference for working with children in their future practices.” “I see kids with crooked teeth, but the vast majority of them are cavity free,” added Dr. Regimbal. “They have a head start in life because they had access to dental care. My hope is that we can give other kids a hand to get them started down the right path.” But she didn’t stop there. Dr. Regimbal also spearheaded her classmates to establish a scholarship for student support at their recent 25th reunion. The group wanted to do something special, and they chose helping students rather than naming a classroom or an operatory space. “We want to let the students know that we care about them and about the education that they receive.” few pieces of advice: “The most important thing in dentistry is the relationship you develop with your patients and the compassion you show to them. And also keep in mind that the blessings and success you receive come because of the opportunities and support you had here at school, so don’t forget to help future dental students.” Dr. Regimbal can be found spreading the word about dental care and straightening teeth at Aloha Orthodontics. She serves as an adjunct faculty member for the VCU School of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics and a member of Dean David Sarrett’s Board of Advisors. Dr. Regimbal has confidence that the students at the VCU School of Dentistry will go on to do great things. She did offer a highest level of accuracy during dental implant placement. Class of 2011 graduates gave generously to the various programs and departments that have given them so much. The D.D.S. Class of 2011 graduates thought long and hard on where to direct their class gift. Past classes have chosen to purchase new equipment, implement new technology or create special funds. This year’s graduates finally found a cause they could all get behind – helping patients navigate the School of Dentistry. Literally. At the annual Pledge Dinner in May 2011, the students presented a few videos that gave a comical glimpse into how people outside of VCU (and even inside!) see the dental school. Ironically, some students standing at a bus stop right outside the school could not even say where the School of Dentistry is located. Parking in downtown Richmond provides another obstacle for visitors, and, once inside, the mazelike halls of the dental school’s three buildings have proven challenging to many patients. The combined pledge of $62,000 from the D.D.S. Class of 2011 will be used to improve interior and exterior signage at the school. These graduates hope that their donation will generate more patient visits and increase patient retention and satisfaction. Dental Hygiene Class of 2011 graduates similarly stepped up to make a difference and enhance their program. The class chose to direct their giving in a way that will be meaningful to future students as well as the Division of Dental Hygiene. A portion of the class’ $12,000 pledge will be used to underwrite the cost of a review course to help senior dental hygiene students with the daunting Board Dental Hygiene Exam. The remainder will help future purchases of specialty equipment like hand instruments not found in the university-distributed kits, intraoral cameras and small handheld air polishers. The D.D.S. Class of 2011 gift already has come to fruition. New exterior signage on the W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. Building, visible from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge and I-95, will help current and prospective patients find the VCU School of Dentistry. Additional exterior and interior sign projects are in the works to ensure that patients find their way to the school and to their appointments with ease. Dr. Barry Segal (D.D.S. ’73) served as keynote speaker at the event and discussed the importance of continuing education in the quest for optimal oral health care. Michelle McGregor, Assistant Program Director, Division of Dental Hygiene, expressed gratitude on behalf of the program, saying, “These generous gifts are significant to enriching the clinical experience and providing critical new technology and equipment for the students.” She added, “Student giving is so noteworthy because it truly signifies the value that our graduates attribute to their education and the future of their school.” In addition the D.D.S. and Dental Hygiene classes’ pledges, each class also gave outright gifts to support the Dentistry Annual Fund and Dental Hygiene Annual Fund. Gifts from both classes, totaling a hefty $28,600, will go to serving the school’s greatest and most immediate needs. Senior giving has become a rite of passage for graduating dentists and dental hygienists, but this year marked the first class gift for the residents of the Department of Periodontics. Drs. Sayward Duggan (D.D.S. ’06), Rafael Rodriguez and Jason Streem surprised their department and Dr. Thomas Waldrop (D.D.S. ’73), professor and director of graduate periodontics, with a $25,000 gift. The three periodontists were honored with a plaque that will reside in their named operatory in the Graduate Periodontics Clinic within the W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. Building. Upon dedicating the operatory, Dr. Waldrop expressed his gratitude and remarked, “It will be exciting walking through the hall and seeing the three names from the Class of 2011.” port the future of the profession, and recent graduates are keenly aware of the most pressing needs dental students. They are paving the way for future generations of students and encouraging others to follow in their footsteps. The Class of 2011 D.D.S. and dental hygiene students as well as the periodontics residents certainly have set the bar high. They were the individuals, along with all other entering freshmen dental students across the nation, that helped set the standards for the Dental Admission Test. They were the first class to band together and jointly give a 50th reunion gift in support of student research. But perhaps the most defining characteristic of this unique class is that it was comprised entirely of World War II veterans. Reunion Weekend in April 2011 marked the 60th anniversary of the class’ graduation, and the highlight of the weekend was the Military Salute for the Class of 1951. This moving and momentous event was hosted by a committee of military students and faculty members. Guests – including nine of the 16 surviving members of the class, their spouses and families – crowded into the packed Crocket Lounge to hear the story of Class of 1951. June 2011 (6/6/11) School of Dentistry STARS Shine Brightly – The VCU School of Dentistry is committed to the values of Service, Teamwork, Attitude, Respect and Stewardship (STARS). Faculty, staff and students are recognized for demonstrating STARS qualities above and beyond normal expectations. 14 VCU School of Dentistry Dr. Fred Certosimo, a retired military officer and chairman of the Department of General Practice, served as emcee for the event. He reflected on the special alumni from the Class of 1951, noting “It has been very humbling to read and hear the stories of how this class answered their country’s call and then returned to start their families and their careers as dentists.” Jodi Koste, Archivist and Head of Resources and Operations for the Tompkins-McCaw Library encouraged guests to take a trip down memory lane through the STARS for the year to date are Linda Bartlett, Patient Care Coordinator, Clinic Services; Dr. Charissa Chin, Assistant Professor, Department of General Practice; Dr. Susie Goolsby, Assistant Professor, Department of General Practice; Ray Hudgins, Human Resources Assistant and Payroll Technician, Executive Associate Dean’s Office; Rocio Lopez, Dental Student, Class of 2012; Donnie Parris, Manager, Patient Registration/Information and Chartroom; Collin Rice, D3 Student; Cecelia Stevens, Patient Class of 1951 alumni admiring the plaque dedicated in their honor pages of Painless Publication, the annual newsletter edited by each class member in turn that helped the Class of 1951 keep in touch. Dr. James Burns (D.D.S. ’72), associate dean for clinical education, chairman and professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology, took us back to a time when Perry Como was all the rage and a gallon of gas would only set Accounts Coordinator, Patient Registration/Information and Chartroom; Kimberly Stotesberry, Insurance Coordinator, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Bob Troxell, Equipment Repair Specialist, Dental Facilities Management; Keisha Tyler, Insurance Coordinator, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and Barbara Wells, Surgical Assistant, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Congratulations! you back 19 cents as he presented a biographical timeline in tribute to the Class of 1951. He chronicled the class’ combined 222 years of military service and presence at turning points of World War II, including the flag raising at Iwo Jima, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Bulge and the Nuremburg war crime trials. “I was impressed by the togetherness of this class and the uniqueness that they were 100 percent veterans,” said Dr. Burns. “I had a personal connection to the Military Salute because three of the Class of 1951 graduates were my instructors.” Dr. Thomas Koertge, professor and vice chair of the Department of Periodontics, explained the significance of the American flag displayed unassumingly in the Crocket Lounge. Dr. Koertge had recently returned from service to the Army National Guard, and he brought with him a special flag that had been flown in a combat mission over Afghanistan. The VCU School of Dentistry now has an official school flag, which symbolizes the long-standing commitment of our military faculty, students and alumni to their country. The 46 men that made up the Class of 1951 will be remembered as the dedicated group that defended their country while making great strides in the dental profession. With over 1,000 alumni and friends giving more than $2 million, you have helped 405 dental students, 32 Masters of Science in Dentistry students in the specialties of endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and periodontics. You have helped 66 dental hygiene students, five advanced education in general dentistry students and 10 oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. You also helped 81 fulltime faculty members and 223 part-time faculty members. Thank you! Your gifts are an investment in people. Gifts support scholarships, research awards and service opportunities. Your gifts have enabled us to integrate and maintain top-notch equipment, like our 128 dental simulation-training stations and 277 dental chairs, while maintaining a superior overall facility. Gifts are investments in faculty development opportunities. We want to retain the best and brightest, as the profession depends on dedicated teachers. Philanthropy assists us to build our research enterprise. Building a body of knowledge is imperative to the profession. Charitable dollars touch all areas of our school and truly represent an investment in people, in students, in faculty and in the many patients we see in our clinical facility. In the academic year 2010-2011 alone, there were more than 100,000 patient visits. With approximately 10 percent of our budget coming from the Commonwealth of Virginia, your investment is vital to the general health and well-being of your school. Who are the students you support? The D.D.S Class of 2015 originated with 2,513 applicants, including 310 Virginia residents and 2,203 out-of-state applicants. The school accepted 60 Virginia residents and 35 students from other states. Of those accepted from Virginia, 22 percent are from Virginia’s rural locations, and 10 are School of Dentistry legacies. The Class of 2015 includes 52 female and 43 male students. Two students are African-Americans, and three are of Hispanic descent. For the last several years, donors have stepped up their giving to the school. Donors have increased their rate of giving by 250 percent in the last seven years – wow! The past fiscal year is the fourth best giving year in at least a generation, and, through your generosity, we hope to make your school a better place for the students we serve. We are grateful that you are considering significant investments in the people that make up your school and your profession. Edward G. Developed by: American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC) Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP) Giving to the school is donor driven. “That is to say, if a donor is interested in making a difference, we will see to it that we do our best to make the dreams of the donor come to life,” said Ed Kardos, the school’s director of development. “We have a variety of ways in which a donor can invest in the students and the school, whether large or small, and we feel that a gift that is meaningful to our donors is certainly very meaningful to us,” noted Kardos. Annual gifts provide critically needed support and are among the easiest ways to make a difference at the school. You may designate your gift to a specific department, program or scholarship used for innovations and day-to-day life. Private support is crucial, as state dollars do not provide a margin of excellence they may have decades ago. These funds provide the flexibility to address immediate needs and unbudgeted opportunities. Major gifts make a major difference, and their impact is apparent everywhere — in our learning environments and in the quality of our students and faculty. Major gifts offer the donor naming opportunities, which are available throughout the three dental buildings. A named gift is the most enduring way to honor the memory of a loved one or a faculty member that holds great meaning for you. Endowments never stop giving. The principal of your gift is invested and grows over time, while a percentage 26 VCU School of Dentistry of the income growth is distributed annually to support the purpose you have specified. Endowments are extremely important to the quality of our programs, as they provide longterm financial stability. You may create an endowment to support students, faculty, research or other programs at the school. A minimum gift of $10,000 is required to establish a new endowed fund; however, there is no minimum or limit on gifts to existing endowments. Tribute gifts to mark a holiday, birthday or other special occasion also are welcome. Memorial gifts remember a deceased friend or loved one. If you decide to send a check, please attach your honoree’s name and a note explaining your donation intentions so that we may thank you and notify the individual or family properly in a timely manner. Planned gifts are a wonderful way to support the school while incorporating your philanthropic goals into your estate and financial planning. You may receive financial benefits such as lifetime income for yourself or another and substantial tax savings. We can assist you and work with your financial adviser to tailor a plan that meets your personal objectives. Generally, planned gifts fall into one of three categories: •Gifts you make in partnership with us (the MCVF), such as charitable gift annuities, deferred charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. •Gifts you make now, such as outright gifts of cash, real estate and appreciated securities. Giving appreciated securities is an easy way to make a gift, and you derive considerable tax benefits. If your securities are held electronically with your broker, send your broker a letter authorizing the transfer (not sale) of shares of specific stock(s) to the MCV Foundation’s main brokerage account. Tax benefits from gifts of appreciated securities include: •A charitable tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities at the time of your gift. •Avoidance of the capital gains tax on the increase in value. •Reduction of the cost of the gift when a long- or midterm appreciated stock gift is made. The School of Dentistry Development team in partnership with the MCV Foundation stands ready to assist you in exploring giving options and opportunities that will be meaningful and beneficial to both you and the school, center or program of your choice.
