THE SHORT FILM JURY
During the Marrakech International Film Festival Closing & Award Ceremony, the Short Film Jury
presents to films selected in the Cinécoles Short Film Competition:
THE CINÉCOLES SHORT FILM PRIZE
Launched in 2010 for the 10th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM), this contest
is aimed at students of Moroccan cinema institutes and schools.
Through the short film competition, the FIFM Foundation wishes to develop a space for cinema
creation and job opportunities for budding filmmakers, and to create during the Festival a real
platform promoting exchanges between seasoned professionals and young directors.
It is also a unique opportunity to introduce School Cinema for the first time in Morocco and within a
prestigious event.
This Cinécoles Short Film Prize is aimed to reveal and bring to light, amongst students of Moroccan
cinema schools and institutes, a new talent on the cinema scene.
In 2011, the prize is awarded for the second time and 10 short films will take part in the competition.
His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Marrakech International Film Festival
Foundation, grants an amount of 300,000 dirhams exclusively dedicated to the making of a second
short film.
The whole grant will be managed by the FIFM Foundation and will be exclusively dedicated to the
making of a short film that will have to be completed within three years after the awarding of the
Prize. The Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation will support the making of the film by
overseeing the writing, directing and editing process.
In 2010, the first Cinécoles Short Film Prize was awarded to Mahassine El Hachadi for her short film
Apnée (10 minutes, ESAV Marrakech).

TRIBUTES
Following last year's tributes to James Caan, Harvey Keitel, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Mohammed
Abderrahman Tazi and Larbi Doghmi, the Festival maintains its position as world cinema's meeting
point, paying tribute to strong personalities from every horizon. Confirming its flair for the ecclectic,
this year Festival has decided to honour:
MOHAMED BASTAOUI (Actor - Morocco), MARCO BELLOCCHIO (Director - Italy), TERRY GILLIAM
(Director - USA), SHAH RUKH KHAN (Actor - India), FOREST WHITAKER (Actor and director - USA)
and ROSCHDY ZEM (Actor and director - Morocco).
MOHAMED BASTAOUI
©FIFM
Born in 1954 in Khouribga (Morocco), Mohamed Bastaoui decided when he was twenty years old,
like many young men, to go to Italy where he took several jobs. Five years later, he came back to his
country and started an acting career by performing in plays for children broadcasted on television,
and then with “Le Théâtre d’aujourd’hui” company, alongside great Moroccan artist Touria Jabrane.
The company went on tour several times, in Morocco and abroad, producing plays acknowledged as
masterpieces of the national heritage.
After “Le Théâtre d’aujourd’hui”, Mohamed Bastaoui founded “Le Théâtre du Soleil” company with
many other artists, including actor Mohammed Khouyi, with whom he played many parts for the
stage, cinema and television.
Mohamed Bastaoui’s remarkable stage presence, acknowledged by the critics and the audience alike,
also attracted the attention of film directors. Thus the actor started a film career, notably with
Mohammed Abbazi in the feature film Les Trésors de l’Atlas (1997). He then played opposite Hassan
Essakalli in Adieu forain (1998) by Daoud Aoulad Syad, a film that won the Best First Film Award at
the Arab Film Festival in Paris. Mohamed Bastaoui’s performance in the film also earned him a

nomination for the Best Actor Award in that festival, a confirmation that he had now entered the big
league (the award finally went to great Egyptian actor Ahmed Zaki).
Mohamed Bastaoui’s cinema career started right when the Moroccan film production engaged in
unceasing progress, especially in the early 2000s. Indeed, the actor worked with great Moroccan
directors like Saad Chraïbi in Thirst (2000) and Jawhara (2003), Kamal Kamal in Tayf nizar (2001),
Mohammed Ismaïl in Et après (2002), and later by Faouzi Bensaïdi in A Thousand Months (2003) –
shown at the Festival de Cannes in the “Un certain regard” section - and WWW: What a Wonderful
World (2006). He was also directed by Daoud Aoulad Syad in Tarfaya (2004) and Waiting for Pasolini
(2007), Mohammed El Asli in In Casablanca Angels Don’t Fly (2006) and recently in Les Mains rudes
(2010), as well as Farida Bourquia in Two Women on the Road (2007) and Jillali Ferhati in At Dawn
(2009). He has also given much-awaited performances in upcoming L’Enfant cheikh by Hamid
Bennani and Sotto voce by Kamal Kamal.
Besides his presence in Moroccan cinema, Mohamed Bastaoui has played in several foreign films
shot in Morocco. He also impresses the Moroccan art scene with his performances in television films
that meet with much critical and public success.
In 2000, Mohamed Bastaoui was honoured by the Khouribga African Film Festival, the oldest film
festival in Morocco and one of the greatest events dedicated to African cinema.

TRIBUTE TO MARCO BELLOCCHIO
Born in Piacenza (Italy) in 1939, Marco Bellocchio dropped out of the Catholic University in Milan
where he was studying philosophy in 1959, and registered at the Experimental Centre of
Cinematography in Rome to become an actor. Unsatisfied, he finally pitched on filmmaking and
made the short films Abbasso lo zio, La Colpa e la pena and Ginepro fatto uomo in 1961 and 1962.
Then, thanks to a scholarship, he moved to London to take courses at the Slade School of Fine Arts.
His first feature film, Fists in the Pocket, was shown at the Locarno Film Festival in 1965. From then
on, breaking with neorealist cinema, he took on the Italian symbols of conformism through a
politically committed work. The Locarno International Film Festival gave him a Special Award for his
complete works in 1976. Anouk Aimée and Michel Piccoli, his actors in A Leap into the Void, received
the Awards for Best Actress and Best Actor at the Festival de Cannes 1980. An internationally
acclaimed director, Marco Bellocchio is also a screenwriter and a producer.

TRIBUTE TO TERRY GILLIAM
©Alex Sturrock
Born in 1940 in Minneapolis, Terry Gilliam first came to recognition in 1969 as the only American
member of the wildly popular television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus, for which he crafted the
animated sequences.
In 1975, he co-directed, with Terry Jones, his first feature, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which
was soon followed by his solo directorial debut Jabberwocky (1977). His subsequent films include
Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985) - starring Jonathan Pryce and Robert De Niro and for which he
received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, a Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best
Film and widespread critical praise -, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), a return to
historical fantasy and The Fisher King (1991), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best
Director and the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Returning to the director’s chair with the star-studded science fiction epic Twelve Monkeys (1995),
notably starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, he then went on to make Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
(1998), an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del
Toro. In 2000, Gilliam started production on his lifelong dream, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.
Unfortunately, severe problems led to the production being shut down within the first week of
filming, against his wishes. The entire nightmare was brilliantly documented in the film Lost in La
Mancha (2002).
In 2005, Gilliam released The Brothers Grimm, starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, followed a
year later by Tideland starring Jeff Bridges, Jodelle Ferland and Janet McTeer.
In 2009, he wrote, produced and directed The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, starring Heath
Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits.

TRIBUTE TO SHAH RUKH KHAN
At 46, Shah Rukh Khan has managed to capture the collective Indian imagination like few

Bhansali’s magnum opus Devdas not only won him accolades in India, but also went a long
way in making it the Indian entry for the 75th Academy Awards. The film was also screened at

Mumbai, in loving memory of his beloved mother Late Mrs. Lateef Fatima. When the nation
is faced with any calamity, SRK has always come forth and patronised, supported and
donated to various Relief Funds from time to time.

TRIBUTE TO FOREST WHITAKER
©Joe Arce/Starstruck Photo
Born in 1961 in Longview, Texas (USA), Forest Whitaker earned a scholarship to study drama and
then classical music.
He decided he wanted to become an actor after seeing Robert De Niro’s performance in Martin
Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. In 1982, he got his first role in Amy Heckerling’s comedy Fast Time at
Ridgemont High, alongside three other beginners: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nicolas Cage and Sean Penn.
His performance as jazz musician Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood’s Bird earned him the Best Actor
Award at the 1988 Festival de Cannes and a nomination for the Best Actor Golden Globe the
following year.
In 1993, the actor decided to get behind the camera, shooting the television film Strapped for HBO.
Two years later, he directed Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett in his first feature film, Waiting to
Exhale. He repeated the experience in 1998 with romantic drama Hope Floats, starring Sandra
Bullock and Gena Rowlands, and again in 2004 with romantic comedy First Daughter, with Katie
Holmes and Michael Keaton.
Forest Whitaker received the highest accolade in 2007 when he earned the Academy Award for Best
Actor for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada in The Last King of Scotland by Kevin
Macdonald. Two years later, he crossed paths with French director Olivier Dahan, freshly praised for
his film La Vie en Rose, who later directed him in My Own Love Song.

TRIBUTE TO ROSCHDY ZEM
©Marcel Hartmann/Getty Images
The son of Moroccan immigrants, young Roschdy Zem took drama classes and had a passion for
football. His first cinema-related experience dates back to 1987 (he was an extra on Les Keufs), yet he
was still a young man selling jeans on markets then, with no intention to become an actor. He was
spotted by an assistant of director André Téchiné, who offered him small parts in I Don’t Kiss (1991)
and My Favourite Season (1991). He also started to perform on stage occasionally.
Roschdy Zem was 30 years old when his acting career took off, with Don't Forget You're Going to Die
by Xavier Beauvois and En avoir (ou pas) by Laetitia Masson. Art cinema quickly got crazy about this
sturdy and very sensitive young man, who then appeared in films by Patrice Chéreau (Those Who
Love Me Can Take the Train), Philippe Garel, and many first films like Louise (Take 2), The Other Shore
(1997) or Living in Paradise (1998).
Like Sami Bouajila, Roschdy Zem opened the way for actors of Arab descent in France, by
distinguishing himself in a variety of roles and films: films dealing with social issues like Save Me or
My Little Business by Pierre Jolivet, for which he was nominated for the Cesar for the Best Supporting
Actor; blockbuster comedies like The Race, Blanche or Chouchou; or psychological films like Alias
Betty or Ordo. Either an informer in 36, a cop in The Young Lieutenant by Xavier Beauvois (which
earned him a new Cesar nomination), this talented character actor, who learnt Hebrew for Live and
Become and took on a Serbian accent in French California, won the Best Actor Award in 2006 at the
Festival de Cannes, alongside his partners, for Days of Glory, a war film about the North African
soldiers mobilized in 1943.

2006 was also the year of his debut as a director with Bad Faith, in which he also played the leading
part. In 2008, he was in love with The Girl from Monaco, he overtrained for his role in Go Fast, and
happily reunited with Pierre Jolivet for La Très Très Grande Entreprise. His performance as a lawyer
with a guilty conscience in Legal Aid (2009) was acclaimed by the critics, as was his work in his friend
Pascal Elbé’s first film, Turk’s Head. In 2010, the colonial infantrymen from North Africa were back in
Cannes with Outside the Law, again in the Official Competition of the Festival, with Roschdy Zem
teaming up again with fellow award winners Jamel Debbouze and Sami Bouajila. That same year,
Roschdy Zem directed his second feature film, Omar Killed Me, based on the Omar Raddad case.

GENERATION MEXIQUE
Mexico, the wild years
The 2000s, the Mexican years? The last decade surely had its share of flourishing cinemas (South
Korea, Argentina, Thailand…), but the most explosive new wave probably came from Mexico. The
alarm was raised in 2000 by Alejandro González Iñárritu with a sensation: Amores perros, a
hyperreal, stylized film that broke with the fake-Hollywood trend of the national production and
significantly changed the face of Mexican cinema, whilst making Gael García Bernal’s face into the
very symbol of this state of grace. In their wake, Alfonso Cuarón delivered a film of great naturalist
freshness (Y tu mama también), while Carlos Carrera (El Crimen del Padre Amaro) or Fernando
Eimbcke (Duck Season) confirmed the revival. Carlos Reygadas pulled out all the stops with Japón
(2002), a true sound and visual trance on the topic of Salvation: the sexual and mystical morbidity of
the film, its extraordinary formal strength established Reygadas as the leader of the new
independent cinema, thus taking over from grand baroque master Arturo Ripstein. While Iñárritu
kept on working in an increasingly “international” fashion with 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful
(American productions crammed with stars), Reygadas remained fiercely independent. Carried along
by the momentum, many authors asserted themselves over the years, shooting contemporary
Mexico with amazing acuteness. In Sangre or Los Bastardos, young prodigy Amat Escalante displayed
the cycle of violence and corruption plaguing a degenerating society, with a head-on,
uncompromising style that makes him one of the most promising disciples of Reygadas. Enrique
Rivero with Parque vía (2008) and Rodrigo Plá with La Zona (2007) also gave their own account of the
rage and social concerns shared by their generation. Although young Mexican cinema is imbued with
violence, it finds in the resources of escape (Pedro González-Rubio’s strange and beautiful Alamar)
and genre cinema a great terrain for sublimation, as shown by Guillermo Del Toro’s baroque work
(Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth…) or Jorge Michel Grau’s remarkable We Are What We Are
(2010)…Considering the countless promises of these last few years (Leap Year by Michael Rowe,
Norteado by Rigoberto Perezcano, Abel, the first film of star Diego Luna, or Miss Bala by Gerardo
Naranjo, which is to represent the country at the Oscars…), Mexico is probably only beginning to
consume the fire of its uninhibited youth.

CINEMA FOR THE BLIND
Following the previous years’ success of the screenings for the blind and partially sighted audience,
the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM) continues to program in this year’s edition new
audio-described feature films including the new Moroccan feature film adapted in 2011 by the FIFM
Foundation to this new technique: this film is Lalla Hobby directed by Mohammed Abderrahmane
Tazi.
For this 1997 film, the Foundation invited two young Moroccan presenters, Aziza Laâyouni et
Mohamed Ammora, to be the audio-description narrators of the film.
Following the example of previous editions, the blind and partially sighted guests of the Festival
coming from all around the Kingdom are entirely taken care of by the Foundation, thus allowing
