Breaching a constitutional mandate
Propaganda war
Having been perceived publicly as a yellow-bellied commander-in-chief with military leaders
who are not about to admit to the serious demoralization that has enveloped the troops, the propaganda machine is being cranked to make a big show of PNoy and his military generals now in
“hot pursuit” against the claimed “lawless” elements within the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front, but making a big distinction on the MILF group that is not considered as “lawless” even when it has been violating Philippine laws.
The military and Palace damage control groups are now busy trying to change that weakling
and laidback image of PNoy while the military propaganda machine is being cranked up with
high-grade propaganda.
Monday, the military conducted air strikes in Payao town, Zamboanga Sibugay, claiming that
it had captured three “lawless” elements who are MILF members belonging to the group of Waning Abdulsalam. So how does one really know if these three are really the “lawless elements” or
just three civilians who are to be paraded before the public as Exhibit A?
The other propaganda spin is the usual exaggerated count of the dead and injured Moro rebels after the air strikes, with the military leaders saying that two soldiers were killed in the latest
operation after a firefight with lawless elements in Payao, while six lawless elements were killed
and 40 others wounded in the military offensive.
Now how would the military know just how many rebels died and wounded? Forty is a lot of
wounded and six would be more than the two soldiers who were killed by the MILF. So how does
the military arrive at this number of wounded rebels since they have not been captured, nor does
the military have possession of the dead “lawless” elements?
But this type or propaganda the military leaders always resort to, has been the style under all
administrations, to make it appear that it is winning the “retaliatory” war.
But the military leaders were extra careful in claiming that the airstrikes were not directed at
the MILF but at the Abdulsalam, who is wanted, adding that the airstrikes were directed at an
area that is not within the areas of the MILF “temporary stay,” the Palace’s euphemism for the
MILF-controlled areas.
Chances are high that even before the air strikes and ground fighting began, whoever the
government was trying to get, such as Abdusalam and his group went to naught, as they had
already escaped.
PNoy bared to reporters yesterday that he has worked out a deal with the MILF Central
Command which promised to cooperate with the government in its effort to identify “one by one”
all those behind the Al-Barka and Zamboanga Sibugay attacks, now saying that it was the Abu
Sayyaf that attacked the troops in Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay, despite the fact that the
MILF had already admitted publicly that it was the MILF that had staged those attacks.
PNoy merely shows his naivete and his reluctance to demand from the MILF leaders to surrender all those behind the attacks when he strikes a deal with the MILF for its leadership to
“cooperate” with his government.
What this also means is that the military and police force will still not go after the soldiers’ killers in Al Barka unless they first seek permission to enter the MILF-controlled territories.
Does PNoy really believe that the MILF will not be ready to hide its fighters considered as
“lawless elements” by the government when the military and police come a-knocking with advance permission to serve their warrants of arrest?
If Umbra Kato and his group that burned so many villages where Christians and Muslims lived
in peace were not surrendered by the MILF then, and even now, why would they all of a sudden
give up Abdulsalam and other Moro rebel leaders whom they protect?
It’s all propaganda, and Filipinos have become much too cynical to swallow the new “all-out
justice” vow of the weakling of a commander-in-chief.
6
Defending the Republic’s territorial integrity is the President’s primordial duty, but this
important constitutional principle is being breached by the
very President and Commander
in Chief when he grants armed
rebel groups, such as the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front part
of the Republic’s territories to
control them, even euphemistically calling these areas in Mindanao controlled by the Moro
rebels as “Areas of Temporary
Stay” (ATS), as well as allowing
these rebels to even carry their
arms publicly and worse, put up
checkpoints, with government
troops banned from entering
these MILF-controlled areas to
search for fugitives without first
seeking the permission of the
MILF.
It is fact that Noynoy made
his displeasure and dismay of
the MILF attack on the Special
Forces unit near the rebels’ lair
in Al-Barka, Basilan, where 19
soldiers were not only killed but
disemboweled by the rebels, instead of making those rebels pay
for what they had done to the
Republic’s soldiers.
And all Noynoy could say was
that the ceasefire conditions
must be respected, along with
his spiel of “No all-out war”
but “all-out justice” which is
meaningless, in the face of the
fact of that while retaliatory attacks were launched against the
euphemistic “lawless elements”
and the Abu Sayyaf group,
Malacañang still refuses to bare
the truth about these groups being one and same MILF, all of
whom work for the Moro secessionist group, since it can always point to the Abu Sayyaf as
the perpetrators even when the
MILF committed the criminal
acts, and also because Noynoy
and his military publicly go
along with the MILF line that
the Abu Sayaff did it.
Yet how on earth can Noynoy
claim to pursue an all-out justice
for the dead soldiers when he
keeps the hands of the military
tied behind its back?
So the government, through its
military and police force, comes
up with bombings and attacks
towns in Zamboanga Sibugay.
But that can hardly comprise
Noynoy’s so-called “all-out justice” vow, especially since he
continues to ban the military
from assaulting the MILF lair
in Al-Barka, Basilan where the
19 soldiers met their deaths in
the hands of the MILF rebels,
and all because he is insisting
on making the soldiers seek permission first to enter the MILFcontrolled areas and “look for”
the “lawless elements” wanted
by the government.
He even adds insult to injury
when he announces that the
MILF will be helping the Armed
Forces of the Philippines and
the Philippine National Police
find and capture the “lawless elements.”
That is a big laugh, considering the fact that the MILF organization has been protecting
its members who are wanted by
government.
And since, via the permission first before entering the
MILF-controlled areas policy
of Noynoy, naturally, the MILF
will have been alerted in advance and escapes can easily
be made by those MILF fighters and leaders wanted by the
government. See the stupidity
of this student council government?
But just who should be controlling these areas that the
MILF has today? The Republic and its security forces or the
MILF?
Obviously, since Noynoy tells
the military to seek permission
to enter an area that is euphemistically termed as “ATS” of the
MILF, Noynoy believes these
areas belong, not to the Republic of the Philippines, but to the
Moro rebels, since he does not
bother to defend the country’s
territorial integrity and defends
the right of the MILF to occupy
and control these areas, justifying his ban on soldiers not to
step into the MILF lair without
permission on the strength of
conditions found in the ceasefire
agreement.
Hello, morons. A ceasefire
agreement cannot be higher
than the Constitution which
mandates the state to defend the
Republic’s territorial integrity!

Jinkee-Manny hiwalayan blues and
Pacquiao’s becoming president …
Yah, that’s what boxing promoter Bob Arum
hopes to see when Manny Pacquiao finally
hang up his Cleto Reyes leathers and becomes
Philippine president. And Bob believes it
could materialize, who knows, on May 2022
when he is already 91 and could probably in
the hospice, as what he believes in a recent
interview with Examiner.com.
Yes, a simple wish from an American who
endeared himself with the Filipino boxing icon
and who played a very huge and significant
role in Pacquiao’s meteoric rise in the prizefighting business, and becoming the greatest
boxer in his era. Arum also made Pacquiao a
super rich boxer.
Yes, a dream from a non-Filipino for a
Filipino boxing great to lead the Filipinos in
the near future. What an exciting movie plot,
eh? ‘The making of Pacman as Philippine
president.’ Or in Tagalog parlance: ‘Itinadhana
ng Langit.’ Di ba Macoy movie yon in the late
60s? Ewan. Basta.
pinaka-mayayamang Pinoy sa Pinas as of now.
tadhana. Kaya ang isang taong pinagpala, may
nakalaang misyon sa lupa. At walang kayang
kumontra duon. Period.
Congressman ng Saranggani ngayon si
Pacquiao at tatakbo Gobernador ng Saranggani
Province sa 2013 bilang paghahanda sa kaniyang pang-national na political aspiration
when he resigns from the beakbusting profession.
na may private tutor to furtherance his knowledge of everything under the sun. Di nga
ba may doctorate degree (Honoris Causa) si
Pacquiao from the University of Cebu for his
excellence in sports?
Bibihira ang puwedeng gawaran ng naturang parangal, ha? O, from a reserve Sgt. in
the AFP, Lt. Colonel or ‘Eltikol’ na si Manny.
Kahit nga bigyan pa siya ng a Star General in
the reserve list, eh, never kong kukuwestiyon
iyon!
pulpol …
Tama na kaipokritahan.

Kuryente.
marunong..
Magtampo sa bigas
****
Kausap ko lang the other day ang isang
napakalapit na katoto ke Manny at natawa nga
ito sa lumabas na balitang kausap na raw ni
Jinkee ang mga abogado niya para mag-file ng
annulment of marriage nila ni Pacquiao. Selos
After several
sports ed of Abante….. hehehe) at daming
pera, nagagawa pa bang magselos ni Jinkee ke
Manny Pacquiao? At naniniwala akong hindi
kayang makipag-hiwalay si Jinkee ke Manny.
Ano siya, hilo?
****
My friends and followers of this column
have been asking my prediction every time
Pacquiao has a fight. 100% correct predictions
ko na mananalo si Manny. May ilang sablay
ginawa key Pacquiao. Manny will win this
fight, definitely.
Piso tamang barko.

‘If the COA will just apply forensic auditing
and reconstructive accounting techniques,
such action by COA will provide solution for
stopping LGU officials’ abuse.’
PNoy’s stimulus package
IS it only because America is into
putting together a stimulus package
that the Philippines in putting together
funds from expected government savings and is about to spend P72 billion in
what is also being heralded as a stimulus package? Gaya-gaya?
In our case, the stimulus package
is expected to have a political effect
-- boost the approval ratings of the local government units, which according
to PNoy are improving, as are his own
performance ratings.
ating LGU support fund, na nagkakahalagang 6.5 billion pesos," he said.
The LGUs will receive P273.31 billion in IRA in 2012, lower than their
2011 IRA of P286.94 billion. The P6.5
billion will help fill the gap.
Aquino cites the 2011 Survey on
Good Local Governance last September which showed that 76 percent of
the respondents are satisfied with their
governors, 82 percent with their mayors
and 75 percent with their vice mayors.
A reader (who wishes to be anonymous) notes, though, that we all ought
to keep a closer watch on our LGU’s
finances: "With reference to the CamSur financial analysis particularly the
fund sources, there should be a law for
mandatory performance appraisal and
analyses of actual application of all the
funds whether they produced concrete
results as targeted/planned and who
benefitted.
"This is similar to the rate of Return
on Investments (ROI) for the public
to know where their taxes were applied and who spent what and where.
If the COA will just apply forensic auditing and reconstructive accounting
techniques, such action by COA will
provide solution for stopping LGU officials’ abuse of the limited financial
resources of our country and avoiding
a ‘bottomless pit and wangwang’ syndrome from being a going concern.
"This suggestion is just wishful
thinking, as most members of our Congress were former local government
officials and some if not most of them
have mysterious skeletons in their closets, thus making it impossible for the
Information/Transparency bill to become a law, at this moment."
***
A friend wants to place a friendly
bet on whether or not the following
can also happen in our country. Here is
the news story that he wonders about
whether it can happen here:
"Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was sentenced
to seven years in prison Tuesday on
charges of abuse of office in signing
a gas deal with Russia, a verdict the
European Union and the United States
both condemned as politically motivated.
"Tymoshenko, the driving force of
the 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution and now the nation’s top opposition leader, denounced the trial as
rigged by President Viktor Yanukovych
to get rid of a political opponent.
"The case has galvanized the opposition. A crowd of several dozen angry
Tymoshenko supporters clashed fol-
lowing the verdict with helmeted riot
policed who flooded the city center, but
they were quickly pushed away and it
was unclear if the protests would last.
"Judge Rodion Kireyev declared
Tymoshenko, 50, guilty of exceeding her authority as premier when she
signed a natural gas imports contract
with Russia in 2009. He also banned
her from occupying government posts
for three years after the completion of
her prison term and fined her 1.5 billion
hryvna ($190 million or euro140 million) for the damages her actions cost
the state.
"Tymoshenko, clad in a beige dress
and wearing her trademark blond braid
around her head, has called the trial a
"lynching." She appeared unfazed by
the verdict and began addressing reporters in the courtroom without waiting for Kireyev to finish reading the
lengthy ruling.
"She said Yanukovych wrote the
verdict himself and compared it to the
show trials and horrific purges by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.
"The year 1937 has returned to
Ukraine with this verdict and all the repression of citizens," she said. "As for
me, be sure that I will not stop my fight
even for a minute. I will always be with
you as long as it is necessary."
And what’s my friend’s bet? Whether, in the Philippine scenario, the case
could even get to a court and whether,
here, the case would galvanize anyone
into demonstrating against bringing the
once all-powerful former leader before
the bar of justice to be meted the just
punishment for her crimes? Any takers?
***
Will someone explain to this nonlawyer what difference it makes that
a case supposedly assigned to the Supreme Court’s 3rd Division is decided
on by the 2nd Division, after the assigned ponente (Spanish for "proposer
of a motion." In this case, the justice assigned to write the decision.) was transferred from the 3rd to the 2nd Division?
It is this non-lawyer’s impression
that cases of little import are assigned to
the divisions (composed of 5 justices)
that do not involve "the constitutionality of a treaty, international or executive agreement, as well as those involving the constitutionality, application,
or operation of presidential decrees,
proclamations, orders, instructions, ordinances, and other regulations."
So, why should it matter which division made the decision? Aren’t the
five justices of one division equal to the
justices of another division? Would five
justices, as learned and as steeped in legal lore not be equal to those in another
division? Didn’t the ponente know that
cases assigned to one division cannot
be transferred to another division?
If as the SC says this is their "internal rule." Why, if this is true, did the ponente not know that "internal rule?" (By
the way, these rules have never been
published and we don’t really know
whether the SC creates these internal
rules as needed. LOL)
What would it matter that one or another division heard a particular case?
What the Supreme Court decided –
to hear the case again (instead of just
insisting that the decision was final) -brings up all kinds of speculations and
suspicions that does a Supreme Court
that has been changing its mind over
and over again in so many cases absolutely no good.

No peace in PEACe bonds
HOW would you feel if you
lent someone P100 with the
agreement that he would pay
you back P350 after ten years
and when payment time comes,
he will tell you he will pay only
P300 because he had to deduct
tax although when he borrowed
the money he told you that the
transaction was tax free?
That’s of course, oversimplification of the complicated case of
the Poverty Eradication and Alleviation Certificates (PEACe)
bonds which became due yesterday.
Ten years ago the Caucus of
Development Non-Government
Organization ( CODE-NGO)
whose members actively participated in the ouster of an elected
president, Joseph Estrada, and
the installation of Gloria Arroyo
in Malacañang in January 2001,
concocted the PEACe bonds
scheme to raise money for projects for the poor.
CODE-NGO stalwarts include
Social Services Secretary Dinky
Soliman, Peace Process Adviser
Ging Deles, and former DBP
Director Dan Songco.
Under the so-called innovative funding mechanism, the Bureau of Treasury would sell P10
billion worth of zero-coupon
bonds. On Oct. 16, 2001, CodeNGO, through Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., bought the
bonds on Oct. 16, 2001 at the
discounted rate of P10.17 billion
and at 12.75 percent interest.
CODE-NGO re-sold the
bonds to banks who bought on
the understanding that they were
tax-free. The transaction earned
for CODE-NGO a P1.8 billion.
Redemption time. The government was supposed to have
redeemed those bonds yesterday
which are now worth P35 billion including the P24.3 billion
earnings of the banks who hold
them.
But Kim Henares of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, issued a ruling last Oct. 7 that the
banks would not be able to get
the full P35 billion because they
will withhold the 20 percent tax
worth P4.86 billion.
The banks protested. When it
comes to money, bankers will
not give a centavo, much less
an inch. Eight banks including
Banco De Oro, Bank of Commerce, China Banking Corporation, Metropolitan Bank
and Trust Company, Philippine
Bank of Communications, Philippine National Bank, Philippine Veterans Bank and Planters Development Bank went to
the Supreme Court asking for
a temporary restraining order
8
from what BIR was planning
to do, invoking "sanctity of the
contract."
Petitioners said the BIR ruling
that retroactively applies to the
government bonds sold in 2001
is prohibited under the 1997
Tax Code "for being extremely
prejudicial to the bondholders,
including petitioners who relied
in good faith on the BIR declaration that the bonds are exempt
from final tax."
The Supreme Court yesterday
said the government must pay
in full its P35-billion sovereign
debt on the PEACe but ordered
that the 20-percent final withholding tax be held in escrow
until the issue is resolved.
What about the CODE-NGO?
They are included in the petition
but can they be made to pay because they have long ago sold
the bonds and enjoyed the P1.8
billion earnings from it?
We are told some of the bank
owners, most of them major
contributors to the Aquino presidential campaign, have directly
complained to him.
Aquino yesterday said he will
meet with Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima and Henares. "We
will then review this specifically to address the complaints of
those who undertook the PEACe
bonds," he said.
Meanwhile, here’s a reaction
from a blogger who is apparently into finance, TonGuEtWisTeD:
"Anong kakasuhan? Sino
ipu-put in jail? E kung yung
nakinabang mismo na CODENGO, at RCBC/RCBC Capital
na tumubo sa pera hindi kasali
sa tax sabi ni Henares.
"Tapos ang sasagot sa tax yung

Pacquiao’s secret
Our country still mourned the demise of
19 soldiers, who were ambushed in Alkobar,
Basilan Province last week. They were
Special Forces of the AFP, who were having
a mission to apprehend a Criminal Element
of the Abusayaf, who is also a member of the
Muslim Cessationist group, MILF. Because
we have a peace deal with the group, our
ranger group was just too trusty that going
after with a certain Kumander Laksaw would
not be a problem, knowing that the guy has
committed a grievous crime. On a shady area,
considered as the bulwark of MILF, a treachery happened. Our AFP were outmaneuvered
by some 400 MILF and also Abusayaf; they
were forced to defend themselves but to
no avail. Majority of our countrymen was
distraught, angry, and wanting to make an
outright revenge. But the AFP hierarchy,
PNoy and Malacanyang, issued right away
that it was just an isolated case and it should
be dealt with in gradual fashion. But I think
the best way is to run after this group while
we also deal them with peace. We should not
be outmaneuvered inside our sovereignty.
If somebody, within or without, wanted to
destroy it as a preventive measure we have
to deter it at all cost. Erap wanted an all out
war, and Sen. Lacson wanted that the AFP
should have right away responded on a hot
pursuit. But cooler mind still prevail anyway.
The President has his own lapses but that
AFP commander has a bigger share of the
wrongdoings. Those young officers, some
are PMAers, were great loses to the military
which it should not have happened after all.
I remember that boxing match of Ortiz
and Mayweather Jr. In the ring, as in war
area, you have to find out first who you are
fighting with. Ortiz, with hands down, waiting for the referee to say box, was focused
inattentively and was treacherously given a
hook and a straight, like a bird he dove to
the canvas. He was counted out right away
by the referee. I was one of those stunned
by that Knock Out. So, treachery can happen
anywhere.
I can’t imagine how horrifying is the story
about, a family of four and a helper who
were massacred by the head of the family. Emmanuel Ponce and his family resided
in City of Talisay. Ten years ago, he was
an international Seaman and his wife is a
branch manager of one bank in Cebu City.
The wife is a well known marathoner and
had won many trophies. Like a true athlete
many wanted to have a photo with her. They
have five children, two are nurses, and one
is studying as radiologic technician. The
youngest was spared, but was told to report it
to the Police. Whether it was his good intention or not treachery can happen even inside
the family.
The Libyan people sacrificed for 42
years under the brutal regime of Ghadafi.
Marcos, who was also a dictator, sent his
very sexy wife Imelda to have a peace deal
with Gadhafi, on the cessationist trouble
in Mindanao. Maybe, because the Libyan
dictator was known to have a soft heart for
women, it was alleged that the deal was done.
And without any hustle, it was criticized as a
big joke. Like Marcos, extrajudicial killing
was rampant, and any activist was shot without any hesitations. Their treachery ended
down by being toppled. Since Filipinos are
merciful, the family of the Marcoses and
cronies still enjoyed uncontrolled freedom.
Bongbong, Aimee, and Imelda should be
thankful for that. But burying Marcos as a
Hero in the Libingan ng mga Bayani is a big
insult to all peace loving Filipinos.
A friend of mine, who is a retired basketball enthusiast, cracked a joke; that when
Gadhafi was caught inside the hole, like a
Filipino “bading” in a womanly voice he
asked captors not to shoot and kill him. And
he murmured in Tagalog, “h’wag magpaputok” but he was shot anyway. Before he died,
he exclaimed, “ptyang ‘melda mo!” then he
stopped breathing. Someone probably taught
him his Tagalog.
Other matters, the new younger set of
officers of Ang Bisaya sa Ontario, will hold
their Christmas Party on December 10 at
Northwood clubhouse, along Arleta and
Sheppard Ave. It will be a big acquaintance
to all native Bisaya, who are now living
in this distant land, Canada. Everybody is
invited. For more information, call 416-6671432 or 416-736- 9695. Asks Dolping or Eric
for more info.
October 22, Saturday, Nonito Donaire Jr,
known in the boxing world as the Filipino
Flash prevailed against Omar Narvaez of
Argentina at Madison Square Garden of New
York City. Many writers considered him one
of the best boxers of the world but one thing
unusual was that the match was adjudged as
boring and lacks the quality of a good fight.
He will be moving to 122 lbs and we hope he
will sweep again foes in that division. Being
a Filipino and with a humble father, Nonito
deserves to be adored by our countrymen too.
Although many would not conform to the
idea that he will be the next Pacquiao, my
opinion of him is highly positive.
Manny Pacquiao’s Secret in maintaining
his power, is eating a boiled native chicken
mixed with Malunggay. His juice after eating is young coconut water. And he is also a
prayerful person. Unlike him, Juan Manuel
Marquez, after eating Sushi in a Japanese
Restaurant went to the washroom and drunk
his urine. Pacquiao should be vigilant on
his fight not to go closer because Marquez
breathes and perspires ammonia and it can
sedate him if he happens to smell it hugely,
it will weaken him. That is the secret of
Marquez. We will watch this match because
the queer rudiment in boxing is employed.
November 12 at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas
and the show will go on.
Now, we also congratulate Congressman
Pacquiao for his promotion as Lt. Colonel
in the reserve force. One Professor of the
National Defense College criticized it as a
defective promotion. But AFP upholds its
decision. Pacquiao after all did not ask for it.
He is in a way qualified being almost a graduate in his college study, plus a recipient of
a honoris causa on Doctor of Humanities. If
they can give whatever to Sen. Lapid, there is
no reason that Pacquiao would not be given.
Moreover, he could give more morale for our
rank and file in the AFP. Why not make our
problem in Mindanao reduce to a Boxing
Match? Nobody will die if we will deal them
on that way. And lastly, we pray that Manny
will win and also peace again in Mindanao
will reign supreme.

BCCA President Paeng Nebres
Edwin Corton
I believe one’s life could be reshaped by mere silence of losing the very person
you love and adore. Setting his mind to becoming a Physician, he was in his second
year Pre-med at Silliman University when he was informed of the sad news. His father
passed away.
For Edwin Corton, it was the beginning of a long journey. He quit his studies and
spent part of his life managing the family owned Sugar Cane Plantation and Hauling
Business in the province.
His courageous actions brought spiritual and self-fulfillment. Until the day he
found his way to make a difference, he overcame enormous odds…he was inspired
and fascinated by those distinguished extraordinary men and women around him.
Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Xavier
University, Cagayan de Oro City, he also dedicated himself to pursue and obtain his
Master of Divinity from Asian Theological Seminary.
He became an Associate Pastor, for Ethnic Ministry, Dominion Chalmers United
Church in Ottawa in 2002. Moving to Toronto brought him some considerable uncertainties but his strength and skills to succeed exerted a profound influence on his success in life and his business.
He is President and CEO of Eaufilaire Quality Inc ., a business promoting an amazing machine called RAINBOW. His company is based here in Scarborough.
Edwin’s self-discipline, honesty, leadership, and common sense, brought him not
only accolades and awards from various community organizations but gained respect
and equality amongst his peers. Not to mention his loving wife Theody, who gives him
all the strength and support, love and understanding, and certainly, patience and guidance.
But one thing deeply close to his heart is his dedication and involvement with
HANDS (Help Another Nations Develop Schools) Team. It is a team composed of volunteers to help communities in other nation to build schools so children can have quality
Christian education. As the Team Leader, Edwin will be happy to hear from everyone
who will be interested to join and support this worthy cause.
He is actively involved as: Board of Directors for Philippines Chamber Commerce
Toronto (PCCT), On. Silliman Univ. Alumni Assoc.(ONSUAA) , Group Leader, Grace
Christian Reformed Church and Silliman University Aces & Lilies.

If 2004 polls proved rigged …
FPJ is RP’s 15th President
MANILA,
Philippines
(October 20, 2011) - Sen.
Francis “Chiz” Escudero is
firm in his resolve in pursuing
his filed resolution that would
acknowledge late movie icon
Fernando Poe Jr. as the 15th
President or the rightful winner during the 2004 polls.
The matter is dependent on
whatever outcome or evidence
that will be gathered by the
joint Department of JusticeCommission on Elections
(DoJ-Comelec) panel as well
as the Senate committee for
looking into the alleged mas-
sive cheating in the 2004 polls.
“It’s (Resolution No. 543) is
aimed at setting the record and
correcting the country’s history,” he said in an interview
with reporters.
If in the event that evidence
would prove that Poe was the
rightful winner in the 2004
presidential race, it doesn’t
mean that whatever decisions
or moves taken by former
President and now Pampanga
Rep. Gloria Arroyo would be
declared illegal.
“It doesn’t mean that
all decisions would be
rendered invalid because under the theory
of a de facto president

all. We’re not out to

“We just want to
straighten things out
insofar as the history
of the country is concerned because 50
years or 100 years from now,
the issues surrounding (alleged) cheating in the 2004
elections (if left unresolved),
may only be regarded as an urban legend or even be reduced
to a mere ‘rumor,’” he said.
“Admittedly, this could only
be supported by the various evidence, whether testimonial or
documentary, in pursuing this
effort (resolution on Poe),” Escudero said, emphasizing that
the intention is not to add up to
the confusion as to what really
happened in the past.
“What’s important is to record, collate evidence to rectify what really happened. If
we cannot do it now, probably
in due time, we will be able to

Escudero, who was the campaign spokesman of the then
late opposition presidential
candidate under the Koalisyon
ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino
(KNP), said his position on the
matter is in accordance with
their stance in resolving the
issues surrounding the 2004
elections.
In filing the resolution, Escudero, who is the chairman
of the justice and human rights
committee, sought the creation
of a fact-finding commission
to look into charges that former President Arroyo allegedly manipulated the result of
the 2004 national elections.
The move will help bring
closure to allegations of massive poll fraud that benefited
Arroyo, allowing her to be reelected in May 2004, he said.
Under the said resolution,
Escudero proposed the creation of a fact-finding commission to be composed of a retired justice from the Supreme
Court, who will be appointed
by the President and will serve
as chairperson; the secretary
of the Department of Justice; a
commissioner of the Commission on Elections to be chosen
by the head of the poll body;
the Ombudsman; and a senator and a representative to be
named by the Senate President
and the Speaker, respectively,
as ex-officio members.
The commission will have
the power to issue subpoena,
compel the attendance of witnesses and production of evidence, cite in contempt any
person who shall disobey any
of its issuances, issue orders
and resolutions necessary or
incidental to its functions as
a fact finding body; and issue
rules and regulations on the
receipt, evaluation, admission
and custody of evidence in accordance with the policy set
forth in the joint resolution.

SPECIAL
REPORT
China’s one-child rule turns into a time bomb
BEIJING (AFP) — China’s one-child
policy has prevented almost half a billion
births but has turned into a demographic
time bomb as the population ages, storing up huge economic and social problems for the country.
As the world’s population hits the seven billion mark, straining the earth’s resources, China can claim to have curbed
its birth rate to around 1.5 children per
woman since the policy was introduced
in 1979.
Without the birth limits, which no
other country applies as rigorously or on
such a scale, the world’s most populous
nation would have hundreds of millions
more mouths to feed than the 1.34 billion it has now.
But from modern cities to remote villages, its implementation has involved
abuses from mass sterilisation to abortions as late as eight months into the
pregnancy. Baby girls have also been
abandoned and killed.
Couples who defy the rule can face
fines amounting to several years’ salary,
have access to social services cut and
even go to prison. Their so-called “black
children” have no legal status in China.
Ethnic minorities and farmers whose
first child is a girl are exempt from the
restriction and in some areas, couples
where both parents are only children are
also allowed to have a second baby.
But three decades on, demographers,
sociologists and economists are warning
of a looming crisis as China becomes the
only developing country in the world to
face growing old before it grows rich.
China’s crisis is approaching “incomparably faster” than in Europe, where
fertility has fallen very gradually over
the last century, Paris-based demographer Christophe Guilmoto told AFP.
In the next five years the number of
people in China over 60 will jump from
178 million to 221 million — 13.3 percent to 16 percent of the population —
according to the People’s Daily Online.
a single child shoulders responsibility for
two parents and four grandparents — is a
major headache for the government, particularly as unemployment rises, forcing
more and more people to migrate to cities for work.
Liang Zhongtang, a demographer involved in family planning, said the pres-
By 2050, a quarter of China’s population will be over 65, the Commission for
Population and Family Planning said,
compared to just nine percent today.
Already, half of China’s over-60s live
alone, a situation unthinkable before,
when four generations would live under
one roof.
The upside-down pyramid — whereby
sure would grow as Chinese born between 1962 and 1972 retire.
“Nearly 30 million babies were born
each year during that period, compared
to six or seven million each year right
now, you can imagine how big the burden on the government will be,” he said.
China already lacks medical facilities
for the elderly, retirement homes and
Balitang
Kutsero
qualified health care workers. The government plans to double the number of
beds in specialized institutions to six
million by 2015, but that only covers the
existing shortfall.
China has barely begun to put in place
a universal social security and retirement
system, and over two-thirds of the rural
population does not have a pension.
So, should China end, or at least relax
its one-child rule?
“Of course!” said He Yafu, a Chinese
demographer. “The reproductive right is
a human right, whether and how many
children a couple want to have has nothing to do with the government.
“Even if China relaxes the one-child
policy, I believe there won’t be many
couples wanting too many children,” he
told AFP, as middle-class couples around
the world opt increasingly for smaller
families.
Guilmoto is hopeful that fertility might
rise in the future, even if “this is very
uncertain when we look at the most advanced regions where it comes close to
one child per woman.”
Women are increasingly deciding
against having children at all, opting instead to pursue careers and enjoy their
growing material wealth.
But the southern province of Guangdong — the engine of China’s economy
with its 104 million residents — this
month decided against relaxing the policy.
China’s most populous province ruled
there would be “no major adjustments”
to the policy in the next five years, said
Zhang Feng, head of the Population and
Family Planning Commission. AFP
Interview with Lt. Col. Manny Pacquiao
By Perry Diaz
Finally, after numerous attempts, world boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao returned my phone call
for an interview. Our conversation went as follows:
Perry: Thank you, Congressman Pacquiao, for returning my call.
Pacman: Don’t thank me;
thank God I did it.
Perry: Congressman… or
should I say, Lt. Col., sir…
you haven’t lost your sense of
humor.
Pacman: Well, my friend,
you see… every time I make
one billion pesos, it humors
me.
Perry: Well, in my case,
just talking to you humors
me!
Pacman: Hoy! Watch your
mawt! What do you think I
am? A clown?
Perry: No, no, no! Actually, you’re my hero, sir!
Didn’t you know that our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was
like you, a boxer? He was
also a martial artist, a fencing
12
artist, and a great lover. And
he’s a linguist, too.
Pacman: I’m better than
Rizal.
Perry: How so?
Pacman: Well, I’m also a
doctor with a PhD in Sports
Science. But I’m better than
Rizal cuz I received my doctor’s degree with “honors.”
Perry: You mean, “honoris
causa,” which is for the sake
of honor, right?
Pacman: Same thing, same
thing. Now, when it comes
to boxing, Rizal was just an
amateur. I have eight world
titles; Rizal didn’t have any.
Perry: But Rizal was a
martial artist.
Pacman: That’s nothing!
He’s only a martial artist;
I’m a marital expert. Ask my
wife, Jinkee. We have four
kids and seven more to go.
Hehehe…
Perry: Gee! You amaze
me, sir! But how about fencing? Rizal was very good at
fencing.
Pacman: Hoy! When it
comes to fencing, Rizal can’t
beat my record. I have installed a fence around my
500-hectare property all by
myself. Did he do something
like that?
Perry: I guess you’re
right…
Pacman: And don’t forget,
I’m also a congressman! And
one more thing, I am a Lieutenant Colonel of the Armed
Forces of the Philippines!
And I can sing, “My Way,”
better than Sinatra!
Perry: Wow! You definitely are much better than Rizal.
But one thing that Rizal was
and you’re not is that he’s a
linguist.
Pacman: Huh? Ling…
what?
Perry: I said, linguist.
Pacman: Lingo? Hoy,
I’m better than Rizal. I go to
church not only on Lingo but
also on Lunes, Martes, Miyerkoles, Huwebes, Viernes,
and Sabado. I go to church
every day of the week, not just
on Lingo, amigo!
Perry: And I suppose you
pray the rosary every day, too.
Pacman: Huh? How did
you know about Rosario?
Who told you that?
Perry: Rosario? Hahaha….
Ikaw, ha! Pilyo ka pala.
Pacman: Hoy! This is confessional information, okay?
Perry: Confessional? You
lost me there, sir. What do
you mean?
Pacman: Well, it’s like
when you confess to a priest,
the priest can’t tell it to anybody.
Perry: Oh, you mean, confidential?
Pacman: That’s it! Same
thing, same thing!
Perry: Okay, I’ll keep it
confessional then. I’m getting to know you a lot better,
Congressman Dr. Pacquiao.
Hehehe…
Pacman: Don’t forget my
new title, Lt. Col., okay?
Perry: Oh, yeah! Congressman Lt. Col. Dr. Pacquiao it is
then, sir.
Pacman: Thank you. I just
want to settle the record long.
Perry: You mean, “set the
record straight,” right?
Pacman: Same thing, same
thing.
Perry: By the way, lest I
forget, there is one thing that
Rizal was very good at — he’s
a good shooter. He knows
how to shoot! I understand
that you don’t know how to
shoot.
Pacman:
How do you
know I’m not a good shooter?
I wouldn’t be promoted to Lt.
Col. if I weren’t a good shooter. I’m the best shooter that’s
why I was promoted from
Master Sergeant to Lt. Col.!
Perry: And without firing a
gun, ha? Can you prove that
you’re the best shooter?
Pacman: Of course, I can.
Just ask Rosario!
Perry: Ay naku! Maloloko
ako! Good-bye, Congressman
Lt. Col. Dr. Pacquiao. Don’t
pray too much, okay?
Pacman: Eat your heart out,
Perry. Good-bye. Hehehe….

RP gains extension of US perks under GSP program
MANILA (October 25, 2011) - The
US government has renewed the Generalized System of Preference (GSP)
scheme for the country that will allow
local exports to enter the US market duty-free or at preferential duties.
“The US is an important ally of the
Philippines and we welcome the move
of the US Congress to renew the GSP
privileges. The renewal of the GSP secures close to $1 billion exports revenues,” Trade and Industry Secretary
Gregory Domingo said.
US President Barack Obama signed
the renewal or reauthorization of the
GSP this week, Oct. 21.
Undersecretary for Industry Development and Trade Policy Adrian Cristobal
Jr. said the renewed program provides
retroactive claim for preferential duty
free access starting Jan. 1, 2011. Our
exporters will be refunded for the difference in tariffs paid after the GSP expired last December 2010. US Customs
is now preparing guidelines for the refund process.
In 2010, the Philippines ranked seventh among US’ top GSP beneficiary
countries, accounting for 4.9 percent of
total GSP exports to the US, data from
Bureau of International Trade Relations
(BITR) showed. In 2010, Philippine
GSP utilization was 72 percent — a
strong indication that the GSP is a valuable market access tool of Filipino exporters in maintaining competitiveness
in the US market.
The GSP is a program of the US government designed to promote economic
growth in the developing world by providing preferential duty-free entry to
4,800 products from 129 beneficiary
countries. Some of the countries that
benefit from the GSP include Thailand,
India, Brazil, Africa, Turkey and the
Philippines.
Cristobal said that the GSP benefits
the Philippines as well as the US. Analysts estimate that in the US alone, close
to 82,000 jobs are either directly or indirectly associated with the importation
and use of GSP-eligible imports including manufactures and semi-manufactures, agricultural, fishery, and primary
industrial products.
In the Philippines, products eligible
for GSP are cane sugar, bananas, parts
of air-conditioning machines, wooden
tableware and kitchenware, silver articles of jewelry, some types of women’s
or girl’s dresses, parts of machinery, and
other food products such as dried mangoes, guavas and mangosteen.
The GSP becomes effective Nov. 5
and will remain in effect until July 31,
2013.
Aquino okays P6.3B for MRT, LRT rehab
Pres. Aquino
MANILA, Philippines - President
Benigno Aquino III approved an additional P6.3 billion budget for the major
rehabilitation of the Light Rail Transit
Lines 1 and 2 and Metro Rail Transit 3

Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad on
Monday said P4.5 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of 26 additional coaches for the MRT. Another P1.87
billion for the LRT 1 and 2 rehabilitation. This is part of the P72-billion disbursements acceleration plan for 2011.
"For the first time, we are subsidizing
the rehabilitation of these railway systems to ensure the efficiency of operations and safety of passengers,” Abad
said.
He emphasized this is the first time the
government is subsidizing the rehabilitation of the 30-year old LRT-1, the
10-year old LRT-2 and the 12-year old
MRT-3. Past maintaenance of LRT and
MRT has been charged against its revenues.
The rehabilitation of LRT 1, which runs
Oct. 7 - Nov. 6, 2011
from Roosevelt in Quezon City to Baclaran in Pasay, would entail P1.33 billion. All 63 first-generation trains will
undergo body repair. The 18 LRT stations and facilities will be improved.
The rehabilitation of the LRT 2, which
runs from Recto in Manila to Santolan in Pasig, will cost P539.58 million. This covers replacement of train
spare parts, repair and replacement of
all 152 air-conditioning units, as well
as replacement of electronic monitoring equipment in the train and stations.
Meanwhile, there will be an acquisition
of 26 additional coaches for the always
overcrowded MRT 3, which runs from
Magallanes in Pasay to North Avenue in
Quezon City. This is aimed at increasing the MRT's designed peak loading
capacity by as much as 60%, to 37,824
passengers per peak hour per direction
(PPHPD) from 23,640 PPHPD.
The MRT's loading limit is often
breached, which causes service disruption and mechanical breakdowns. An
average 500,000 passengers ride the
MRT on weekdays.

Coconut oil exports down 42%
MANILA, Philippines (October 25,
2011) - Coconut oil exports plunged by
almost half in the first nine months due
to tight supply of copra in the domestic market and a slowdown in demand
abroad.
Yvonne Agustin, president of the
United Coconut Association of the
Philippines (UCAP), said preliminary
estimates indicate that the country’s
coconut oil exports fell 41.9 percent to
632,680 metric tons (MT) from January
to September this year, from 1,088,701
MT a year ago.
In September this year alone, UCAP
data shows that CNO exports reached
only 49,689 MT, down 46 percent from
last year’s 92,083 MT.
Agustin attributed the decline to the
tight supply of coconut in the domestic
market after three years of successive
good production which stressed the
trees.
The slowdown of supply and delivery
of copra to mills nationwide, Agustin
said, was due to the two typhoons that
hit the Philippines in September.
A slowdown in the demand for coconut oil in the world market has also affected shipments, Agustin said.
Likewise, Agustin said, consumers
are shifting to cheaper alternatives like
palm kernel oil.
Pending final figures from the Philippine Coconut Authority, Agustin said
the coconut sector may revise its targets
later this month or early November.
UCAP now projects coconut oil exports to reach just 900,000 MT this
year, lower by almost a third from last
year’s 1.32 million MT.
Google mulls role in possible Yahoo! bid
NEW YORK (AP) - Google is exploring the possibility of helping to finance a possible deal by others to acquire Internet search company Yahoo!,
according to a report published by the
Wall Street Journal on Saturday.
Google Inc. has talked to at least twoprivate equity firms about potentially
assisting them to finance a deal to buy
Yahoo Inc.’s core business, according
to the story, which cited a person familiar with the matter, and did not identify
the source.
The Journal said Google and prospective partners have held early-stage discussions, but haven’t assembled a formal proposal. The source said Google
may not end up pursuing a bid.
A spokeswoman for Mountain View,
California-based Google declined to
comment to The Associated Press. A
spokeswoman for Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo! said the company
doesn’t comment “on rumor or speculation.”
Any involvement by Google in a Yahoo! acquisition would likely draw antitrust scrutiny from regulators, because
of both companies’ shares in the Internet search business.
The report came as investors have recently driven up Yahoo!’s stock price,
betting that the company will sell itself,
either in whole or in part. Closing Friday at $16.12 apiece, the shares have
gained nearly 25 percent since Sept. 6,
when CEO Carol Bartz was fired.
They are up 45 percent from the
stock’s 52-week low reached in early
August.

The Philippines is 12th most populous nation in the world …
Manila welcomes 7billionth baby!
MANILA, Philippines (October
31, 2011) - The Philippines welcomed
shortly after midnight Sunday the symbolic seven billionth baby – a girl born
at the government-run Dr. Jose Fabella
Memorial Medical Center in Sta. Cruz,
Manila.
Danica May Galura, the second child
of common-law couple Camille Galura
and Florante Camacho, weighed 5.5
pounds at birth.
“We just welcomed the seven billionth
human being. I think this is symbolic in
the sense that we would like every Filipino and, of course, every human being
that comes into this world, (to be) born
with dignity and with all the opportunities in being able to achieve to the fullest the potential of his being a human
being,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona
said.
Danica May’s birth came amid an explosion of camera flashes in the delivery
room. “She looks so lovely,” Camille
whispered softly as she cradled her tiny
baby. “I can’t believe she is the world’s
seventh billion,” she said.
Florante, her partner, quietly stood in
a corner wearing a white hospital gown
as television crews and photographers
crowded to get a shot of his daughter.
The parents and the baby were met
by United Nations officials in the Philippines including UN Population Fund
Country Representative Ugochi Daniels, who presented the child with a
cake.
There were also gifts from local benefactors, including a scholarship grant
and a livelihood package to enable the

parents to open a small retail store.
Also on hand to witness the event was
12-year-old Lorrize Mae Guevarra, who
the Philippines declared as its own symbolic six billionth baby in 1999 when
the world reached that demographic
landmark.
“I am very happy to see this cute
baby. I hope like me she will grow up to
become healthy and well loved by everyone,” said Guevarra, who is now in
the sixth grade.
The UN named a Bosnian baby, Adnan Mevic, as the Earth’s six billionth
inhabitant on Oct. 12, 1999. The secretary-general at the time, Kofi Annan,
was pictured in a Sarajevo hospital with
Mevic in his arms.
Current UN chief Ban Ki-moon will
not be seen cuddling a newborn. He has
said the seven billionth baby will be entering a “world of contradiction.”
“Plenty of food, but still a billion
people going to bed hungry every night.
Many people enjoy luxurious lifestyles,
but still many people are impoverished,”
he said in an interview with Time magazine.
The Mevic family is now struggling in
poverty at their Sarajevo home, which is
partly why no baby will be put in the
global spotlight this time.
Danica May is one of several children
in countries around the world being declared a symbolic seven billionth human. It was hoped she would arrive at
exactly midnight, but she was delivered
two minutes early.
The UNFPA, in its “2011 State of the
World Population Report,” said 10 per-

cent of girls in the Philippines aged 15
to 19 have started child bearing, with
many of the young also increasingly
vulnerable to HIV.
Also based on the report, the Philippines is the 12th most populous nation,
with 94.9 million inhabitants. But according to Commission on Population
executive director Tomas Osias, the
country’s population is actually not
94.9 million but 95.8 million based on
National Statistics Coordinating Board
data.
The UNFPA report showed that of the
seven billion people worldwide, Asia
accounts for 60 percent. China’s population of 1.13 billion is still the biggest,
followed by India at 1.24 billion.
The same report stated that 893 mil-
lion people are over 60 years old and
the figure is likely to nearly triple to 2.4
billion by the middle of the century. The
average lifespan is now pegged at 68
years compared to 48 in 1950.
With about two babies being born every second, the seven billion figures will
keep racing ahead in decades to come
– to more than 10 billion by 2100, according to UN estimates.
The UN predicts that India will overtake China as the world’s most populous nation by 2025, when it will have
almost 1.5 billion people.
“This is not a matter of space – it’s a
matter of equity, opportunity and social
justice,” UNFPA executive director Babatunde Osotimehin said. – (philStar.

‘Sa Ngalan ng Ina’ is gritty drama
Naura Aunor
16
MANILA, Philippines - At the late September press preview of
"Sa Ngalan ng Ina," Ms. Nora Aunor’s return to TV drama after
an eight-year hiatus, the scene inside the venue was reminiscent
of how it was when the legendary actress’ Elwood Perez-directed
mother-and-daughter drama "Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita M" was
being shown in theaters in 1991. This was way before the advent
of mall cinemas and Ms. Nora Aunor loyalists would burst into a
thunderous applause at her every dramatic highlight.
Where Nora was largely over-the-top as the self-sacrificing mom in
Pacita M, she delivers a fine performance as the wife who becomes
governor in TV5’s "Sa Ngalan ng Ina." Unlike the regular soap that
proliferates on the tube, "Sa Ngalan ng Ina" is far from glossy and
convoluted. It is, thankfully, both gritty and theatrical. The theatrical touches are, of course, to be expected since the one at the helm
is Mario O’Hara who remains a presence in the local theater scene.
And because theatricality calls for huge, spectacular scenes, logic
is sometimes sacrificed. Consider the scene where Nora had to
walk through the rubble after the explosion that killed her husband
in the series (played by Bembol Roco). Why in the world was Nora
without a mobile phone so that her children could have just called
her and relayed the news? O’Hara was clearly striving for effect at
the expense of logic.Other than little quibbles like this, "Sa Ngalan
ng Ina" is still rather refreshing to watch. Aside from Nora, Eugene
Domingo (as Nora’s sister), Edgar Allan Guzman as one of Nora’s
two sons and Karel Marquez (as the willful daughter of Christopher
de Leon and Rosanna Roces) offer performances that bristle with
quiet power. We would have wanted to sing hosannas to Alwyn
Uytingco as the renegade son of Nora and Bembol but his portrayal
strikes us as too blustery for comfort.

Oprah top paid woman entertainer, Gaga catches up
Oprah Winfrey
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Watch out Oprah, there's a savvy pop star
and an ambitious real housewife nipping at your financial heels.
Oprah Winfrey remained the entertainment world's top woman
earner, but Lady Gaga and Bethenny Frankel, one of the original
housewives in the "Real Housewives of New York," are moving
quickly up the ranks of the rich, according to Forbes.com.
Winfrey held on to the top spot with $290 million in earnings from
May 2010 to May 2011 and an estimated net worth of $2.7 billion.
But Winfrey's daytime talk show, which she wrapped up in May,
was her chief money earner and her newly launched cable network,
OWN, has drawn paltry ratings since its January launch.
"The network has a long way to go before advertisers start paying
the kind of rates Winfrey was charging for her syndicated show,"
said Forbes' Dorothy Pomerantz, who compiled the list by culling information from agents, managers, lawyers and others in the
know.
Lady Gaga was a distant second with $90 million in gross earnings,
followed by Frankel with $55 million. Frankel, who launched her
own diet and lifestyle brand, sold her Skinnygirl Margarita cocktail mix for an estimated $100 million and has been expanding her
brand, which will soon include food, supplements and a possible
talk show.
Four women, model Gisele Bundchen, a singer Taylor Swift, talk
show host Ellen DeGeneres and Judge Judy Sheindlin, each earned
$45 million last year and tied for fourth place.

Martin Short to be a judge on Canada’s Got Talent
Martin Short has been announced as
the first judge on Canada's Got Talent,
which premieres on Citytv in 2012.
(Darren Goldstein photo)
Oct. 7 - Nov. 6, 2011
TORONTO - Martin Short figures if Canada’s Got
Talent had been around when he was just starting out, he
would have been too shy to try it.
“It takes a lot of guts . . . especially with three judges
that might be known to you, to get up and perform (like)
that, so I probably wouldn’t have, but you know, I auditioned in 1972 for Godspell and got it, and that took nerve,
but . . . it wasn’t being televised.”
The Canadian comedy legend, known on both sides
of the border for a four-decade-plus career that includes
TV, movies and theatre, was announced Thursday as the
first judge for the reality competition show, premiering on
Citytv in 2012.
Short, a Hamilton native, is best known here for the
characters he created on the TV series SCTV and Primetime Glick, as well as movies like Father of the Bride and
Three Amigos. He has also done dramatic roles on shows
like Law & Order: SVU and Damages, for which he was
nominated for an Emmy Award. (He won an Emmy as part
of a writing team on SCTV in 1983)
Auditions have already been held across the country,
including in Toronto at the end of September. But now,
hopefuls are being called back for auditions in theatres
across the country, including Dec. 3, 4 and 5 at the John
Bassett Theatre in Toronto.
Short will get his first chance to see auditions next
week in Calgary and said he’s looking forward to it.
In a news release, John Brunton, executive producer of
Canada’s Got Talent for Insight Productions, called Short
“the classic triple threat. He’s one of the most accomplished
comedians in history. He’s conquered Broadway and Hollywood, winning Emmys and Tonys, and he has one of the
funniest wits in showbiz.”
No air date has been announced yet for Canada’s Got
Talent, a franchise of Britain’s Got Talent. Rogers Media
said the other two judges, described as high-profile, and
a well-known host will be announced in the coming days.

Pacquiao, 8-1favorite, will teach Marquez a lesson …
‘Manny by KO in 6th’ – Roach
By Mon Datol
TORONTO - Celebrated boxing trainer
Freddie Roach predicted that his prized

Manuel Marquez inside six rounds in their
WBO welterweight title fight at the MGM
Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Nov.
12 and said the spark in the Filipino icon’s
eye in training camp indicates he’s going
all out for a decisive victory in their third
encounter.
With only a little over two weeks before
Filipino ring icon faces Marquez, Roach
expressed belief that his prized pupil of 11
years is ready to teach his challenger a lesson.
“Yes, Manny will teach Marquez a lesson on the ring,” Roach assured in an interview. “The way Manny has been conducting himself in training and how aggressive
he is in sparring, I think he's looking for the
knockout. “
“If it (knockout) comes, it comes," Roach
said, noting that Marquez looks to have put
on a lot of muscle obviously to catch up on
Pacquiao’s advantage in that department.
“I guess he thinks he needs that strength.
Personally I think that will slow him down
and that will be to our advantage.”
Roach believes that the training camp

(19 knockouts)—two ended in draws—
before he faced Donaire (26-1, with 18
KOs).
With the way he fought yesterday,
Narvaez wasn’t even worthy of being
Oct. 7 - Nov. 6, 2011
two of them teamed up in 2001.
“Manny is on fire. He boxed 11 rounds
Saturday with three sparring partners. His
timing, his distance, it's all coming together. Boxing fans will be seeing the best
Manny Pacquiao yet,” he said. ”This is because, as I said, he wants to teach Marquez
a lesson on how to respect people."
Pacquiao has dominated some of the new
sparring partners in the last two weeks. He
gave undefeated African boxer Hastings
Bwalya a bloody nose, and on Thursday,
he knocked down Scottish fighter Jaime
Kavanagh twice.
Roach reiterated that Marquez’s going
to the Philippines following the split decision against Pacquiao in 2008, wearing a
T-shirt saying he beat Pacquiao twice, was
a slap on the face of the Filipino boxing
hero which he has not forgotten.
In spite of how close their two previous
bouts were, Las Vegas bookmakers have
installed Pacquiao as an eight to one favorite to win the contest. Pacquiao is on the
very top of his game and Marquez at the
age of thirty eight seems to be approaching
the end of his career. But don’ tell this to
Marquez. The Aztec warrior believes that
he won the first two fights and promises
a clean sweep on November 12th. Does
Manny believe he will be facing the same
opponent he faced in 2008 and 2004?
Pacquiao, in a separate interview, concurred with his trainer’s assessment of
his preparedness, saying, "I'm focused
on making my strength and speed be the
best they can be. It's harder to train [in the
Philippines], it's high altitude — it's hard
to breathe, the air is so thin where I go, at
7,000 feet [above sea level]. But it helps
my stamina and energy, which I want to be
very strong in this fight."
"I'm always dedicated in my training,
but this fight is really important to me. Because it's our third fight — our last fight —
I have to end all the issues, all the doubts in
people's minds about beating him. I know
I need to be in 100% condition to do that.
You always hear me say I want to make the
people happy, make the people satisfied
with my fights. I want to be happy too,"
he said.
“I don't think Manny's going to let up on
Marquez like he did to his last opponents
(Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and
Shane Mosley). I think he's going to knock
Marquez out this time. Manny has improved a lot and is vastly better now than
when they fought the first time,” Roach
said.
“He's still the same Manny Pacquiao
machine. He's still going strong. Manny
Pacquiao is not nearly done yet." “This is
Manny’s world,” said Pacquiao’s strength
and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza or at
least it felt like it inside the Wildcard Boxing gym.
“Everything in Manny Pacquiao’s life
is because of boxing,” said Roach:” And
he knows that.” So, how does Manny feel
about being on top of the boxing world?
“I feel very happy and very thankful to
god for giving me this kind of blessing in
my life,” said Pacquiao, 33:” To all fans of
boxing, thank you very much for believing
in me.”
“This is kind of something special,” said
Pacquiao (58-3-2,38KO’S):” And I have
trained very hard for this fight and I think I
am ready to fight.”
“I think he is slower now compare to
before,” said Pacquiao:” He is slower, but I
am not underestimating him. He is a tough
boxer, tough opponent. He is strong moving up to higher weight division.”
“For this fight in this training camp,”
said Pacquaio smiling:” We do outside
( fighting), we do inside, right hand , we
do everything.” With only sixteen days
remaining till the night of the event, the
buzz around the fight is picking up steam.

Donaire fought a foe who disgraced the sport
(Abridged column of “All The Way” that appeared at Manila Standard-TODAY on Oct. 24, 2011.)
called unbeaten, much less be considered a winner by knockout in 19 of his
35 wins.
Ah, wasn’t Freddie Roach who said
Narvaez’s record was suspect? Before
the fight, Roach, Pacquiao’s brilliant
American trainer, said, “I’m impressed.
But if Narvaez’s victims were mostly
taxicab drivers, I won’t be surprised.”
Sometime ago, a guy named Edwin
Valero was unbeaten in so many fights—
maybe 21 fights. He won them all by
knockout.
When people started talking Valero
could pose a serious challenge to Pacquiao, and the Pacman could be in
trouble if it materialized, Pacquiao said,
“Maybe, his victims were all tricycle
drivers.”
Too bad Valero’s career—and life—
ended tragically. He committed suicide
only recently while in prison for domestic violence.
Ah, life. It is not to be lived, really, but
is a journey.
I don’t know what’d be next for Narvaez after surrendering all 12 rounds
yesterday as Donaire waltzed to a unanimous decision victory.
Will he return to his 112-lb and 115-lb
divisions and continue his farce-fraught
reign there?
You know, he has successfully defended his crowns 16 times the last 10 years
or so.
I guess that’d be a good idea—but
only if he struts his wares in Argentina
and doesn’t come to New York again.
Muggers in New York’s notorious
back alleys might spring him a surprise
he’ll regret for the rest of his life.
Ah, the sucker in us. We buy rotten
shows disguised as Broadway hits.
If not for Pacquiao, indeed, boxing’s
long been gone to the dogs.

Soon, Sonsona will be champ again
(Abridge column of “General Admission” that appeared in Sunday PUNCH
in Dagupan City.)
THE young and the restless—they are
as carefree as moths. It’s been like that
all this time, from Achilles to Palaris.
They fade young, if not die young. Their
courage knows no fear, defies danger like
true SWATs.
Of recent example is Marvin Sonsona.
He was once dubbed Marvelous, lifted
from Marvin “Marvelous” Hagler. Hagler was the best fighter of his time.
That’s because at age 18, Sonsona
fought beyond his age. Barely had he
turned 19 when Sonsona became a world
champ.
How many under-twenties have made
it to the summit of beak-busting? Not
even Hagler in his heyday in the Eighties. Or Muhammad Ali, the greatest
boxer of all time.
Sonsona hit the top so early because he
is gifted. Anybody disputing that can be
guilty of atheism.
For, to be gifted is to be favored by
God.
God works in mysterious ways but
spotting one similar to a teacher’s pet is
chicken feed. No mystery there.
The first time I saw Sonsona in action,
I knew he was a world champ in the making. Not that he comes from a city that
produces boxing greats, foremost among
them is Manny Pacquiao.
God loves GenSan that much He gives
us not one Pacquiao but several Pacquiaos?
For, aside from Sonsona and Pacquiao as sons of Gensan, there’s Nonito
Donaire, too. Donaire is also presently
holding a world crown. But that’s another story.
Sonsona was marvelous, indeed.
But, alas, for virtually only a fleeting
moment.
After winning a world crown, he
slipped quickly into oblivion—losing his
throne in no time when he fell to the vagaries of ego and success. The good life
gave him a false pride.
He grew fat on a diet opposed to his
reign. Before he could defend his title,
he lost it on the scales.
Unbeaten in the ring, he finally lost in
February 2010 by a fourth-round knockout.
Perhaps, too embarrassed to face the
music, he withdrew from public view.
Hermitic, no one knew where he was.
Then he resurfaced.
“I am a changed man,” he said.
On Saturday, October 15, he fought
again—18 months after he called it quits.
Because he is Mr. Natural, whose
in-born skills resemble that of Ali’s, he
won—decking Mexico’s knockout artist,
Carlos Jacobo, in the eighth en route to a
unanimous decision verdict.
It was an impressive win.
Jacobo was on a 13-fight winning
streak, the last 10 all by knockout. The
victory likewise restored Sonsona’s old
moniker: Marvelous.
Soon, Sonsona will wear a world
crown again.
Non-believers, place your bets.

Donaire routs Narvaez in a boring one-sided fight
NEW YORK – Nonito "The

and WBO title belts against
Argentina's Omar "El Huracan" Narvaez in what quickly
turned into a one-sided affair
at the Theater in the Madison

Donaire did not get the

Top Rank’s President Todd

In his fight

The Game

Billy Ray Bates: first encounter
By Bill Velasco
Super import Billy Ray Bates was
this writer’s first interview ever. The
summer after second year college, the
reed-thin version of yours truly shifted
from economics to communication
arts, and decided to test the waters of
television. I apprenticed with the merchandising department of what was
then City2 (before the EDSA revolution paved the way for ABS-CBN to be
returned to its true owners the Lopez
family). One of my first jobs was to interview the new import of the Crispa
Redmanizers named Billy Ray Bates.
At the sweltering hot Green Meadows gym, I casually walked up to this
massive, tree trunk-like newcomer
sitting on the bench, wearing a green
Snake Jones jersey. Byron “Snake”
Jones was Bates’ predecessor, at a
time when imports were allowed to be
6’9”. Jones had had some fabulous duels with Toyota’s other reinforcements
like Andy Fields, but could not play
because import were short for that conference.
I casually asked Mr. Bates if I could
have a word. He wiped his face (this
was before he made the white headband his trademark game accessory),
stood up to his full height, looked
down at me and firmly asked: “What
do you want?” in a voice that sounded
like he was gnarling gravel. Naturally,
I was flustered. But he turned out to be
very accommodating, if a bit cautious,
26
because this would be the first time for
him to see action in the PBA.
Of course, everything that followed
has become cemented in Philippine
basketball lore: the scoring outbursts
(both on and off the court), the merchandising man that followed his
rants of “I am Superman! I am Superman!” on nationwide television, and
the championships. Soon he would
have his own gaudy (some would say
tacky) collection of Grosby hightops,
complete with ankle straps. He was
the toast of the town. And he not only
drank in it, he dove headfirst into it.
I remember a story of one former
PBA MVP from Crispa’s heyday, of
how they were so impressed because
their new import was drinking orange juice during practice. Then, upon
closer inspection, the smell of the jug
of screwdriver mix leaked out. This
was the first sign of overindulgence
to come. But they were winning, so
nobody really complained. And when
he made his mark with Michael Hackett and Ginebra, the frenzy grew even
wilder.
I checked the NBA Register of a
few season before. There were glowing remarks about his amazing athleticism and ability to take over games (he
once threw a tomahawk dunk down so
forcefully he bowled over 6’11” backboard-slasher Darryl Dawkins). But
there were also comments about how
he once slept through the first half of a
game as a Portland Trailblazer.
Still, the stories were so compelling
that they were actually part of the impetus for Rafe Bartholomew to fly from
New York to Manila and spend three
years of his life writing “Pacific Rims”.
That first-ever book written by a foreigner on Philippine basketball became
the third-best selling book in the country in 2010, behind the “Twilight” series and Joel Osteen’s “Purpose Driven
Life” books.
The Black Superman’s troubles
are well-documented. In a piece entitled “Seven dollars and five years
in prison”, this writer recounted his
last big mistake, and his subsequent
boast of how prison basketball was
tough enough to match the NBA. Now,
though, Bates has straightened out his
act, and is the skills coach of the AirAsia Philippine Patriots of the ASEAN
Basketball League. One of his first
tasks is to teach underprivileged youth
and flood victims in Pampanga.
“Sports brings together classes, races and communities in shared pride,”
AirAsia Philippines CEO Maan Hontveros said at the press conference
launching the clinics, held at the esteemed Hotel Stotsenberg at Clark,
Pampanga. “Sports are important not
only for physical and mental development of our children, but for national
development.”
Bates called to mind my first encounter by sporting another borrowed
jersey, left over by from 6’7” journeyman Alex Crisano, who played with
the Patriots last season. He was both
impressed, humbled and thrilled by the
attention he has been receiving since
his return to be enshrined in the PBA
Hall of Fame.
“I’d really like to thank all the fans
for remembering me,” Bates said. “The
level of basketball in the country has
really improved so much since I was
last here.”
Bates is finding fulfillment in giving
back to the country that made him a
sports immortal, thanks to the AirAsia
Philippine Patriots, and making a positive influence on a new generation of
players that never got to see the Black
Superman fly.

Boxing my passion; politics my calling
I have been very fortunate in
achieving a certain amount of fame
through my achievements inside the
ring. As a boxer and a world champion, I have been allowed to raise the
international awareness of my country, the Philippines. But more importantly, it has given me a large platform to bring attention to the needs
of so many in my country, to give
a voice to those who are not strong
enough to speak for themselves.
By Manny Pacquiao

Though boxing has always been
my passion, I consider public service
to be my calling. For both, I have a
great responsibility to my people.
Oct. 7 - Nov. 6, 2011
There is a big difference in being a
professional fighter and being a congressman. As a boxer I have more
individual control when it comes to
achieving my goals. I train hard, I do
my homework and I fight to the best
of my abilities with only one obstacle
in my way: my opponent.
As a Congressman, the pace is
slower and more measured because
of the nature of government. That
is by design to provoke thought and
debate so that hopefully the best solution to the problems of the nation
and the provinces we represent are
met in the best possible way. It takes
patience and it takes cooperation.
Compromise is the bridge that
leads to solutions many times. It
forces us to consider the pros and
cons of the issues and though it can
be frustrating at times I understand
the rationale behind the process. The
immediacy and action of boxing is a
stark contrast to the rules of procedure and the deliberate pace of government.
As a boxer I carry the pride and
love of the Filipino people on my
shoulders. It inspires me to train
harder and motivates me to win. I
am their representative to millions of
people around the world who watch
me in the ring. I am humbled by their
support.
As a public servant the responsibility to “perform” is even greater because for many, lives and livelihoods
are at stake. Where can I do the greatest good? Everyday I am faced with
these decisions. It is an awesome responsibility. I was chosen by my people to be their voice. To help them.
To improve their lives. It isn’t something an eight-week training camp
can cure. It is a lifetime quest that I
have only just begun.
It’s wonderful to be a world champion boxer, but it’s an individual
achievement that can’t last forever.
Public servant is the title that defines
me. Public service is where I feel I
can do the most good for so many.

THE ROVING EYES
By Maria D. Bello
One of the wonders of nature is the
inherent ability of the mother after giving birth to produce milk and sustain
her young by breastfeeding. Interestingly, in human and among other mammals, the newborn comes with the instinct of sucking and searching for the
nipple, and the mother’s breasts at that
point in time, through a most sophisticated postpartum hormonal physiology,
are generally ready to provide milk for
the baby. All this happens so naturally
and so efficiently. Breastfeeding does
not only provide nutrition for daily sustenance but to arm the infant with more
essential ingredients to protect it against
diseases, and thus, for long term survival of the species.
Evidently, the ancient history of
breastfeeding in early humans (among
homo sapiens or extinct species of
hominids more than 2.4 million years
ago) started with the very first baby of
the very first couple on earth. They had
undoubtedly observed various animals
around them breastfeeding their young.
During those times, when the mother
died during childbirth or from disease
or accident, the baby was left to die,
unless the prevailing social dynamics
at the area allowed "group nursing,"
breastfeeding by other lactating women within the same tribe. Wet nursing,
where only one woman feeds the baby,
was, and is practice even today in many
cultures. In the absence of lactating
women, the motherless infant was fed
animal milk. Apparently "formula feed-

ing" started then too and is not a modern
invention.
It was in the 1800 when physicians
and scientists started studies to find out
the best baby food mixes and in 1867,
the first commercial baby food created
by Justus von Liebig came out. Since
then many other brands and types have
been marketed.
The convenience of the formula,
hyped up to be modern and better, attracted mothers who eventually chose
them over breastfeeding. As a result,
more than 50% of the babies were fed
baby formula by 1950. Twenty years
later, better-informed and more healthconscious women decided to "go back
to the basics." Breastfeeding became
popular once again, especially among
the educated mothers.
The concepts and practices in feeding
the baby have changed since the first
newborn. However, one fundamental
scientific principle remains: breastfeeding for at least two years, as recommended by the World Health Organization, or at least 12 months as practiced
in the United States, confers great benefits to the child.
Tons and years of research have
shown that mother’s breast milk is best.
It is the perfect food for her baby. No
commercial or animal milk can equal
the quality of breast milk, the only one
which contains valuable ingredients
that boost the baby’s immune system,
providing it antibodies that fight diseases, and is non-allergenic and less ex-

pensive. Breastfeeding also strengthens
the mother-child bonding, which studies have shown results in more secure
children with 30% less behavioral and
social problems when they start school.
Bottle feeding boosts obesity risk
Infants who are still bottle-fed at age
two have increased risk of being obese
by the time they reach 5, according to a
new research involving 6,750 children
in the Early Childhood Longitudinal
Study, Birth Cohort, which included
children born in 2001 in the United
States.
Twenty-three percent of children
who were still feeding off from a bottle
at age 2 were obese by age 5 ½, while
only 16% of those who stopped using a
bottle by age two were severely overweight. Obviously, the bottle encouraged more uncontrolled calorie intake
as reported in this study in The Journal
of Pediatrics.
Authorities in nutrition for children
suggest weaning them from the bottle
around age 12 to 14 months, which will
also avoid tooth decay from putting the
child to bed with a bottle, besides irondeficiency anemia.
Solid foods
Babies are introduced to solid foods
at age 4 to 6 months, which will eventually be the main source of nutrition for
the baby. A one-year-old will usually
require about 10 to 16 ounces of whole
milk a day, supplemented by a variety
of healthy table foods, like fish, vegetables and fruits. Vegetable and fruit
juices should be limited to 4 ounces a
day, and the rest of the liquid should be
filtered water.
For parents who have problems with
weaning a child from the bottle, consultation with their pediatrician is recommended. A transition from a bottle to a
cup might help staging the withdrawal.
The ultimate goal
The Surgeon General of the United
States in 2010 set the following goal:
75% of the babies breastfed when they
leave the hospital; 50% of babies still
on breast milk at 6 months of age, and
25% of babies still being breastfed after
1 year of age.
The American Academy of Pediatrics in 1997 advocated breastfeeding
"for at least 12 months and thereafter as
mutually desired."
Hopefully, all mothers will breastfeed their baby up at least age 6 months,
preferably to age one, or even age two.
The countless benefits children derived from breastfeeding during those
months of significant growth in their
brain and all other organs in their body
are immeasurable and priceless.
The natural powerful and magic ingredients in the mother’s milk cannot be
found in any supermarket or pharmacy
at any cost. (Ref: Parentcentral.ca)

Mad rush at 401 …
By Miss Rubi Talavera
Have you ever tried driving on the 401
during rush hour ???
Holy geez, the traffic is terrible. Grabe
talaga!
Reminds me much about Manila traffic
or probably even worse.
Because in Manila, puede ang lusutan,
di ba?
Anyway twice this month, we had to
drive to Mississauga for a reunion cum
dinner party for the visiting Consul General Joey Empesando.
Joey is a batch 68 Upsilon brod from
Vancouver and he was fellowshipping with
us Sigma Deltan sisters and Upsilon brods.
His flight was delayed but his trip from
the airport to Erin Mills took even much
longer. So the party host, Marita Lee
spoiled us with red and white wine and
appetizers sisig, and lumpiang shanghai,
plus barbecued pork on skewers. Ke sarap
sarap!
Among the guests were:
Henry Uy, Josie Natividad, Rizza Khamal, Tess and Ruben Cusipag, Sol Allen
and her Manila guest, Doris Villareal, Baby
Salazar, Rogie Concepcion, Raffy Policarpio, Noel Cruz, Amy Bautista, Alma Ma-
nahan, Jun Cruz, Ferdie de Asis, Frank
Luna, Pempe and Caridad Benavides.
Siguro there were more, but senior moments na ako. Nevertheless, thanks, Eddie,
for the hospitality, and once again, for being a gracious host.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Lots to be thankful for -Thank you to our family and loved ones.
No reason, just for being who you are!
Thank you to all our friends, readers,
supporters, for your friendship and patience and understanding!
Thank you to all our real estate clients
for your trust and for your business
Thank you, Canada, for all that you offer, and for your peace all these past 35
years of living here!
We spent our Thanksgiving weekend in
Caledon, just north east of Richmond Hill a mere hour and a half hours ride.
Friends have a blooming apple farm and
naturally we picked a bushel full of Macintoshes.
Cooked up a storm, made apple crumbles, apple crisps, apple pies, name it and
we gorged and feasted on them.
The trees were in yellow, red and brown
bloom-- beautiful! Nature at its best!
What about you - what did you do?
Family dinner? Canadian style?
BOO! Happy Halloween!
The Filipino Association of Richmond
Hill or FARH for short is holding its annual Halloween party and Induction of its
incoming officers and directors on Saturday, October 29th.

TICKLE ME!
By Chuchi Punzalan
Isn't it strange ..
How a 20 dollar bill seems like such
a large amount when you donate it to
church, but such a small amount when
you go shopping?
… how 2 hours seem so long when
you ' re at church, and how short they
seem when you ' re watching a good
movie?
… that you can ' t find a word to say
when you ' re praying but…you have no
trouble thinking what to talk about with
a friend?
… how difficult and boring it is to read
one chapter of the Bible but how easy it
is to read 100 pages of a popular novel?
… how everyone wants front-rowtickets to concerts or games but they do
whatever is possible to sit at the last row
in Church?
… how we need to know about an
event for Church 2-3 weeks before the
day so we can include it in our agenda,
but we can adjust it for other events in the
last minute?
… how difficult it is to learn a fact
about God to share it with others; but how
easy it is to learn, understand, extend and
repeat gossip?
… how we believe everything that
magazines and newspapers say but.... we
question the words in the Bible?
… how everyone wants a place in
heaven but... they don ' t want to believe,
do, or say anything to get there?
… how we send jokes in e-mails and
they are forwarded right away but when
we are going to send messages about
God, we think about it twice before we
share it with others?
IT IS STRANGE ISN'T IT?

A man and his dog were walking along
a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him
that he was dead.
He remembered dying, and that the
dog walking beside him had been dead
for years. He wondered where the road
was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high,
white stone wall along one side of the
road. It looked like fine marble. At the
top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall
arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it, he saw
a magnificent gate in the arch that looked
like mother-of-pearl, and the street that
led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the
gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man
at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called
out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'
The man thought a moment and then
turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his
dog.
After another long walk, and at the top
of another long hill, he came to a dirt road
leading through a farm gate that looked as
if it had never been closed. There was no
fence. As he approached the gate, he saw
a man inside, leaning against a tree and
reading a book.
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do
you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there,
come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump,'
said the man.
They went through the gate, and sure
enough, there was an old-fashioned hand
pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long
drink himself, and then he gave some to
the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog
walked back toward the man who was
standing by the tree. 'What do you call
this place?' the traveler asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler
said.
'The man down the road said that was
Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the Gold
Street and pearly gates? Nope. That's
Hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to
use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they screen
out the folks who would leave their best
friends behind.'
Soooo. Now you see, sometimes, we
wonder why friends keep forwarding
stuff to us without writing a word. Maybe this will explain it.
When you are very busy, but still want
to keep in touch, guess what you do? You
forward emails. When you have nothing
to say, but still want to keep contact, you
forward jokes.
When you have something to say, but
doesn’t know what, and don't know how
- you forward stuff.
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have
some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll
have some ice water brought right up.'
The man gestured, and the gate began
to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler
asked.
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
36
A 'forward' lets you know that you are
still remembered, you are still important,
you are still cared for.
So, next time if you get a 'forward',
don't think that you've been sent just
another forwarded joke, but that you've
been thought of today and your friend on
the other end of your computer wanted to
send you a smile.
You are welcome at my water bowl
anytime!!

Kaya
naman pagpasok ng pamahalaan ni
Pangulong Aquino bumalik ang patayan. Maraming Marines ang namatay sa
kamay ng MILF sa Basilan. At marami
pang namamatay habang lumalaon.
Ayaw naman ni PNoy na humarap
sa tunay na giyera. Lalo raw marami
Hehehehe .. buhay-Undas
sa Pinas nuong araw. Hirap kalimutan.
Happy Halloween na lang pos a inyong
lahat.

PCCT FAMILY POTPOURRI
It is said that in many a golf
game, old friendships are enhanced, new friendships are
developed, initial business
deals were reached and sometimes sealed outright. But even
granting that the last two were
absent at the Philippine Chamber of Commerce-Toronto
(PCCT) Golf Tournament on
Sunday, September 11, officers,
members -- led by its president
Oswald Tugadi – and friends
of the PCCT gathered at the
Bethesda Grange Golf Course
in Stoufville, Ontario for a day
of fun, organizational teamwork,
sportsmanship or plain friendship. For more information on
the PCCT, please call (416) 8504966. (Photo: Raymond Santos)

(PCCT) pose for a souvenir photo before
boarding the bus for fun and excitement
to Casino Rama, Saturday, September
17. The trip was organized by the PCCT
to raise funds for necessary office equipment needed at the premier Filipino business organization's office located at 21
Canadian Road, Unit 4, Scarborough, Ontario. The funds raised enabled the PCCT
to purchase a projector and huge portable
screen for use in its various business development seminars/meetings for members throughout the year. PCCT President
Oswald Tugadi thanks directors Flor Vendiola and Cheryll Cantonjos for coordinating the event and all members/friends of
the organization who took time to go on the

Honeymoon
Q. Why is a holiday taken by a newly married married couple called "honeymoon"?
A. There are a number of explanations. Some sources refer to ancient Germanic tradition of the couple drinking mead (fermented honey and water) for
30 days (moon) after the wedding. Others point to the waxing and waning of
the moon, which they say reflects the changing affections of newly weds. Still
others offer a simpler explanation: the sweetness of honey and the romantic
happiness of moonlight.
For the Record. Because the lunar cycle is approximately 29 1/2 days long,
every month of the year except February is guaranteed to have at least one
full moon. However, even moonless Februaries are a rarity, occuring once
in every 15 to 20 years. In 1866, February had no full moon, while January
and March each had two Astronomers say that arrangement won/t reoccur for
another 2 1/2 million years.
Past Forward. August 1, 1851: Banco Espanol-Filipino de la Isabell II, the
first commercial bank in the Philippines, was established by the Spanish government's Junta de Autoridades in Manila. Its name was changed to Bank of
the Philippines Islands in 1912.
Word Watch: Bonus (boh nuhs): Latin for "good."
