I would like to thank all those Members that have provided feedback on what is a very emotive issue indeed, more Members have replied to this survey than any previous survey on any subject. I would emphasise again at this point that the survey is merely a starting point and has given the Board a clear indication of Member’s views. The Board intends to seek further detailed input on this matter before any decision is finalised. For those that haven’t as yet answered the survey, it is open until 17th February 2016. Camping Update I know many of you will have received an email re the Camping situation but as this is such an important issue, I will provide a summary and a further update: 2 - February 2016 • On 26th October 2015, the ‘Development Application for Extensions to Existing Club (ancillary caravans and tents) over 247 King Avenue, Durack was lodged with the Brisbane City Council (BCC) • This is a necessary application to allow Caravans and RV’s to stay at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds around Show Days. This was paid on 4th November 2015 and allowed BCC to commence work on assessing the application • On commencement of the assessment, BCC initially indicated that they would request any further information regarding the application within 10 business days, this time period was then extended, as they are permitted to do • On 2nd December 2015, BCC requested further information, mainly in regards to a Bushfire Management Plan that was requested under section 276 of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009. • Owing to the Christmas break, this survey was unable to be completed prior to Christmas and was completed the week commencing 11th January 2016. This was then lodged with BCC and the period of Public Notification period commenced on 21st January www.dogsqueensland.org.au Dogs Queensland Board Notes The Queensland Dog World • The Public Notification period will take 15 Business Days. Then, providing there are no further issues and no further issues are foreseen, BCC have 20 business days to decide upon the application As always I will keep you up to date with any further developments. PR for Dogs Queensland As you also may know, the Dogs Queensland Board has appointed renowned Australasian PR Agency, PPR; http://ppr.com.au/ to assist them in the following areas: • • • Increase awareness of Dogs Queensland Position Dogs Queensland as the authority on dog breeding in Queensland Make Dogs Queensland the ‘go to’ voice for comment on anything related to dogs in Queensland PPR will take a proactive role in ensuring that Dogs Queensland is on the front foot for all potential issues by providing strong content to both Social Media (including Facebook) and more traditional mainstream media. PPR will also ensure that all levels of Government become increasingly aware of the standards set by Dogs Queensland, especially in regards to any proposed State Puppy Farm Legislation by the Queensland Government. So far with the Press Releases in regards to Australian Breeds, the General Manager has conducted interviews with ABC Mackay and ABC Wide Bay, as well as the story being picked up by the Gold Coast Bulletin, Sunshine Coast Daily, Bundaberg News Mail and other regional and local news outlets. Although these and coming articles are positive in nature and focused on pure bred dogs, they are aimed at getting the Dogs Queensland name out there so when issues of a more substantive nature occur, Dogs Queensland will be among the first organisations whose opinion is sought. The National Agility Committee Chairperson, Mr Bob Mills has been consulted and confirmed after review of the approved 2015 National Agility Committee meeting minutes that the following section of content appearing at the bottom of Page 2 and the beginning of Page 3 of the rules should have been removed: • • • • • • • A dog that is withdrawn from the ring, or fails to complete the course for any reason, will incur a score of 200 penalty faults. The maximum faults that a dog can incur are 200. Results will be determined by ANKC Ltd scoring – i.e. Individual performances will be recorded with Clear Rounds, Course Faults, Time Faults and Penalty Faults being incurred and totalled. After the conclusion of each Trial each team consisting of five (5) members will nominate and discard its worst result. In the interests of the breed, please read this survey carefully and reply by completing the return slip below and return to the ANKC Ltd Administrator, PO Box 309, Carina, Qld, 4152, or by email to: [email protected] by COB 1st March, 2016. If sending via email please clearly note in the Subject heading “GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG SURVEY”. Proposal The ANKC Ltd and the ANKC Ltd National Canine Health and Wellbeing Committee recommend that: The ANKC Ltd have resolved to conduct a Survey of all German Shepherd Dog owners recommending that: Litter Registration Limitations are to be amended as follows and will apply for litters born from 1st January 2017:1.1 Both parents of every litter must be screened for Hip Dysplasia through an official Hip Dysplasia Control Scheme. Where the parents have been born after the 30th June 2015, they must record a score of no more than eight (8) on either hip, with no more than three (3) in any one area, or in the case of imported animals, a grading that is deemed to be acceptable for breeding in their country of origin. 1.2 Both parents of every litter must be screened for Elbow Dysplasia through an official Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme. Where the parents have been born after the 30th June 2015, they must record a grading of Normal, Near Normal or Grade One on both elbows, and must be free from the condition of UAP (Ununited Anconeal Process). If litter registration limitations are approved for each or either of these diseases, breeders of litters whelped on or after 1st January, 2017, will be required to comply with the requirements as a prerequisite to registration of any litter on the ANKC Ltd Main Register. Dogs must be positively identified by microchip, and/or tattoo prior to being x-rayed. Litters which do not meet the above requirements will only be able to be placed on the Limited Register and will be flagged not to be upgraded. A majority of registered owners within the breed and responding to this survey must be in favour before approval is given by the ANKC Ltd. Each of the above two items will be considered separately. Rationale It is over fifteen years since the requirement was introduced for German Shepherd Dogs to show proof of x-ray for hips and elbows. It should be noted that a total hip score of 16 is still above the breed average and hence the majority of the breeding stock will still be utilised in the breeding program but it will ensure the removal of animals severely affected with hip dysplasia. While animals with Grade Two, and Grade Three elbows or Ununited Anaconeal Process (UAP) form a small percentage of animals x-rayed and numerically are very small, but in reality pose a real threat of increasing the incidence of Elbow Dysplasia within the German Shepherd Dog, hence only Normal, Near Normal, Grade One graded animals should be considered within any breeding program. Cut along the Dotted Line ANKC Ltd German Shepherd Dog Survey This section to be sent to the ANKC Ltd Administrator, PO Box 309, Carina, Qld, 4152 or by email to: [email protected] by COB 1st March, 2016. If sending via email please clearly note in the Subject heading “GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG SURVEY”. Wayatinah Geronymo Well, the Herding Sub-Committee were busy in 2015 arranging and running judges’ training. This is a first for this Sub-Committee so we had to start from scratch. At the moment in Queensland, herding is only a small group as obviously it needs very specific venues and stock to hold trials and training. As there are not many trials at the moment, 6 or 7 next year, it is hard for trainee judges to get the experience by going to trials and stewarding or stock handling. So we decided to develop a training course with practical classes as well as theory. We held three days practical where the herding competitors came and helped put the trainees through their paces and two days theory where they nutted out the rules and regulations for running trials and judging them. Geronymo passed away in 2015, however his legacy lives on in the show-ring. Sadly missed by Rodney and Kim Abell We would like to thank the herding community for their help. Ellie Wong and her family for the use of their home and stock for our first practice herding class and Ellie’s input with the training. Anne and Carl Mitchell for the use of their property and Stock. Anne’s help with the practical teaching and the good ideas to make our trainees think. To John Mitchell for help with teaching and demonstrating. We had a stock handling class at Tracey Lamb’s place where the trainees were put through their paces on handling both sheep and ducks without dogs. All of these classes have given our trainee judges the chance to practice and the chance to discuss with our experienced judges and competitors lots of different scenarios. Last but by no means least I would like to thank Peter Mayne for pulling it all together not only on the practical days but all the theory and background work for our course. 10 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World On a different note, we also managed a duck herding demo at this year’s dog spectacular. The public and dog world really seemed to enjoy watching Panda take our feathered friends round the obstacles and into the pen. They also liked the brochure we produced to hand out with information on the sport. The public were quite surprised on just how many breeds could actually herd and spent time at the photo boards trying to identify them all. Duck Herding was also featured on Totally Wild. Ranger Tracey came out to Wongapong to film. You can find it on their website. Retriever Ability Tests For Gundogs (RATG) - Update Further to a proposal to use replica game as an alternative to pigeons or dummies for the retrieving tests in Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG) the National RAFT has deemed it to be an issue which can be dealt with at individual state level. You are advised that Dogs Queensland has approved the following addition to the ANKC Rules for the conduct of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs which will apply for Queensland RATG events: Addition to: Section 8 – Definition of Terms “Dummies”: may include replica game such as Dokken. When used, they should be consistent with the existing criteria for dummies with respect to size, colour and weight. Please note that the requirement that all dummies are to be approved by the Judge prior to judging will remain applicable. Interested in Retrieving Trials? On the Australian Leaderboard she placed 5th, this was 63 points ahead of the next Queensland dog. Kit placed 4th in the Qld State Championship, while in her early stages of pregnancy. She stopped trialling for the year after the National in September and did not compete in any other trials for the season. The nature of Kit is the best a Labrador could have, her ability and her desire to retrieve are amazing. She has topped off the year with her first litter of 5 male and 5 female puppies that are definitely material for future retrieving gundogs. She has given me so much pleasure since beginning her journey in Retrieving Trials and I look forward to making 2016 a bigger and better year. Malcolm Tyrie, owner of the wonderful girl ‘Kit’ www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 13 Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World Rally-O Sub-Committee 3 point deduction for each of the following: Rally-O Deductions Explained • Repeat of a station, maximum of two (2) re-tries allowed per run – the original score is erased and replaced with -3 for the retry. 1 point deduction for each of the following: • Most retries are taken because the station was Incorrectly Performed but sometimes handlers may just want to try to do it better, or they aren’t sure if it was Incorrect Performance or not so they take a retry. Handlers are allowed to retry the same station twice. • Pylon/post knocked over (on Figure Eight, Spiral and Serpentine) by a dog and/or handler – some judges may also deduct if the dogs dislodges a sign. If the handler knocks over the cone or sign it is deducted as a Handler Error. • Lack of control – indicates the dogs has at least temporarily stopped working with the handler and is doing its own thing. The dog may have left the handler to sniff, check out a distraction, jumping up and down, lunging, spinning around or barking madly. This covers a wide variety of offenses. • Loud command or intimidating signal • Excessive barking – two or three small yaps is probably acceptable but if it happens at more than one station it may be excessive. A yap now and then throughout the course might be considered Excessive by the end of the course. Barking numerous times at any station could be considered Excessive. There is often a fine line between Excessive Barking and Uncontrolled Barking. • Course Distractions knocked over or dislodged - Does not include running away with distraction in Offset Figure 8 as this would be NQ by Minimum requirements not met. • • • Tight Lead – Any time the lead becomes tight on the course, during an exercise or between stations. Tight lead is taken when the dog makes the lead tight, if the handler pulled on the leash it would be Handler Error. Dog interfering with handler’s forward motion – any time the handler must adjust their path to avoid the dog, or if the dog bumps into the handler, usually seen on left turns and pivots and on cone exercises when the dogs is on the inside. If the dog does a poor sit or down so that they are partly in front of the handler, it could be scored this way. Poor sits, downs and stands – position is crooked, ahead or behind the handler enough that it would be scored a full point deduction in traditional obedience. This can be stations where the dog must sit in front of handler, be in heel position, or a finish. • Slow or resistant response – Prompt response is required so if the dog doesn’t sit, down etc on command, most judges will allow 2 or 3 seconds before scoring Slow to Respond. • Touching a pylon, post or course distractions – A dog making a light touch, enough to dislodge a sign or post or distraction. If a handler knocks over a cone or sign it would usually be scored as Handler Error. Doesn’t include a brush from a tail, unless in the situation where the dog wasn’t allowed enough room by the handler to carry out the exercise, this would then be scored as Handler Error. • • Touching or hitting a jump without dislodgement - A dog making a light touch or tap, loud enough to be heard by the Judge but not enough to dislodge a bar. If a handler knocks into a jump without dislodging the bar, it would usually be scored as Handler Error. Out of position – usually scored if the dog is heeling wide, forging ahead or lagging enough to be scored a full point in traditional obedience. It could also be used for a crooked sit, down or stand. 14 - February 2016 1 to 10 point deduction: Handler Error applies from when the team enters the ring until Judging ceases at the end of the Course. • Lack of teamwork – this is any time the dog and handler briefly cease to work together as a team. eg the dog sniffs or is distracted but returns to work when called. There is a fine line between Lack of Teamwork and Lack of Control • Lack of Briskness – Rules state the team move continuously at a brisk but normal pace unless otherwise directed. Brisk is defined as keenly alive, alert, energetic. The deduction may be taken at the end for an overall lack of briskness in the performance or may be applied to one station. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World • Handler error – knocking a sign, shuffling of feet, tight lead. • Attempting more than two (2) retries - If the handler has lost count of how many retries they have already taken, they shouldn’t try to ask the Judge. • In Novice, the Judge may give them assistance, but in higher grades the Judge will not communicate anything. • Performing a station out of sequence – similar to Station Not Attempted. A station skipped or missed before attempting the next station. If a handler realises their mistake before they start the next station they may go back and do the missed station. • Where a station is rendered unusable - if the dog knocks/ steps etc the jump then it is ‘Failure to Clear’ (IP) however if that jump is to be used twice in the Excellent Class and the jump has been ‘damaged’ in some way that it cannot be used properly the second time then it is “Station Rendered Unusable” (NQ). Station Rendered Unusable could also be in a situation where cones etc in weave twice are knocked out of position and can’t be negotiated again on the way back. Does not include running away with distraction in Offset Figure 8 as this would be NQ by Minimum requirements not met. 10 point deduction for each of the following: • Incorrectly performed station (including Failure to clear a jump) – one or more principal parts of a station not performed or performed incorrectly including entering the cones on the wrong side, incorrect number of steps. Any Incorrect Performance can be retried (if available) if they have not attempted another station before they start the retry. If the team successfully completes the retry, the IP score is replaced by a Retry score, plus any other deduction that may happen during the retry. Failure to Clear a jump includes walking through or on a broad jump, baulking or going around a jump. All these are eligible for retry. Where a bar is knocked down, it should be IP but not eligible for retry (unless the bar jump is to be used again and then it would be NQ for Station Rendered Unusable). Non-qualifying (NQ) scores shall be given for: • Minimum requirements not met – an overall status that a qualifying score hasn’t been reached. • Dog unmanageable or uncontrolled barking – if a dog completely stops working and the handler can’t manage the dog. If a dog barks at 50% or more of the stations it could be considered uncontrolled. Both are up to the Judge’s discretion whether an NQ is given or a lesser deduction. • Consistently tight leash – If the lead is tight more than 50% of the time in Novice • Dog relieving itself in the ring • Handler Error • Station not attempted – a station skipped or missed before attempting the next station. If a handler realises their mistake before they start the next station they may go back and do the missed station. • Failure of a dog to go over a jump in the proper direction – if a dog runs by the jump the exercise can be retried. If it then comes back over the jump in the wrong direction, it would be NQ. If the dog takes the jump of their own on the course in either direction it would more likely be lack of Control www.dogsqueensland.org.au Disqualif ication: No points awarded. The dog is disqualified from all Trial Competition on the day and the Judge must provide a written report to the Member Body within 14 days - the only exception being instances where the disqualification was incurred as a non qualifying score. February 2016 - 15 Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World Queensland Recommendations: • Distance markers – recommend that clubs buy markers need 1x5m and 4x3m – and that judges use these to mark the distance work in Masters. Competitors have to go at least to the marker and complete the exercise (either turn or call). Judges to pace out distance to 3 m or to 5m - doesn’t need to be exactly measured. If exercise executed short of the marker – IP. Recommend this be included in all Judges briefings. • New distance work stations - where handler has to leave your dog and walk away with their back to them. How does the handler know if the dog has moved and thereby eligible for a retry? Recommend that the Judge says “Your dog has moved”. Then the handler can decide whether to go back and retry, continue with exercise (IP) or go back to get dog and continue to next station (IP) (once they originally left the dog that constitutes attempting the station so cannot be NQ Station Not Attempted). • Moving in change of position work - use the wording from the Open Obedience rules regarding moving from position. Recommend 1 body length = IP. • Retries. Competitors sometimes ask the judge if they can retry or if they have used all their retries. Judges cannot communicate with the handlers. Suggest that in Novice, some help and advice can be offered. In the higher levels, no communication. • • • Failure to Clear Jump (IP) – includes walking through or on a broad jump, baulking or going around a jump. All these are eligible for retry. Where a bar is knocked down, it should be IP but not eligible for retry (unless the bar jump is to be used again and then it would be NQ for Station Rendered Unusable). Non Qualifying Scores - “If a team receives a non-qualifying score on a course, judging will cease immediately and no retries will be allowed.” Recommend if competitor is doing very badly or very slow, they can be asked to leave. If NQ’ed early, judging can cease but competitor can continue to the finish. Station 51 Spin – have to allow either handlers to slow pace slightly or allow some degree of out of position while dog turns away from handler walking forward – should not be penalised in the first instance. Have to allow for body shape / physical ability of dog to perform this and how quickly. If not performing correctly or too slow to catch up, then penalties apply. 16 - February 2016 • Station 52 Four Cone – to be completed as a continuous ‘cloverleaf’ by cross centre point 5 times (see figure 1 below) Figure 1 • Station 53 Back up 3 steps – heel off the straight line / veering to stay level with dog – IP. Dog performing exercise at an extreme angle 45 deg or over - IP. Between 0 deg and 45 deg – penalised. • Station 59 - Judges to leave LOTS of room to complete this – recommend at least an extra 6m. Must not anticipate – IP. Must not forge significantly – IP. Fails to catch up- IP. Change pace significantly to let the dog catch up = 1-10 Handler Error • Station 59 - Distance Call to Heel – can’t look over shoulder or turn body to look back at dog. – this is double command Recommend Handler Error 5 points • Retry - Handlers have to advise the judge of a retry. We recommend not advising the Judge as per the Rules should result in an IP • Station 46 – Recommend– That the handler does not commence running until they have given the command for the dog to go over the jump. • Station 40 – “shall be performed after the station”. Recommend this means “Must be performed” • Dog picking up a distraction - isn’t covered under the Rules – we recommend NQ by Minimum requirements not met. • Stopping in any turn (except pivot turns) – Rules state that turns must be executed as in Traditional Obedience. – Minor deduction in obedience so our recommendation is 1 point Handler Error. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Club Interest The Queensland Dog World • Pivots - Pivots should be executed with the feet remaining within an area approx. the size of a dinner plate (or appropriate to the size of the feet). Extra stepping or shuffling is IP Durack Vendors Current directory for February 2016: Vendors to contact the Vendors Committee Chair, Janelle Mannell Ph: 0427 736 882 Email: [email protected] • How do we determine the ‘pause’? We recommend – Feet come together and handler comes to a distinct Stop • Where must the team execute a Station relevant to “Ring Procedure” in the Rules? Rules say “near the designated sign, either directly in front or in the front and to the left of said sign”. We recommend that the team must execute each Station within 600mm of said station with obvious exceptions. We recommend that if the handler goes past the sign before giving the command then it will be scored an IP. J.J. Donuts: Email: [email protected] Contact: Gaylene Ph: 0434 405 375 “Multiple commands and/or signals ... are allowed” under the Rules however a dog that performs without multiple commands has to receive a better score than one who needs extra therefore multiple commands will be penalised. Next month, different Asian Breeds will be featured. ‘The Book of the CHOW CHOW’ by Dr Samual Draper and Joan McDonald Brearley was the September 2015 monthly Book Review. This is a massive book (A4 in size and 600 pages) not really suited for bedtime reading. However, it covers everything you need to know about the Chow Chow and includes many photos. Other Asian breeds in this month’s line up include the Shar Pei, Tibetan Mastiff and Akita. If you have an interest in any of these breeds, the Library has the following available for borrowing: ‘The Book of the Shar-Pei’ by Joan McDonald Brearley – a 225 page book covering history, breeding and all other relevant information. ‘The Shar Pei Today’ by Juliette Cunliffe is probably a more recent book on the Shar Pei and it too includes much of interest. ‘Tibetan Mastiff’ also by Juliete Cunliffe with Susan Elworthy is the only book currently held and likewise includes history and characteristics on this big beautiful dog. ‘The New Complete Akita’ by Joan M. Linderman and Virginia B. Funk and ‘The Akita Today’ by David and Jenny Killilea are just two of the books in the Library currently available. I am working on doing a comprehensive catalogue of all books held in the Library, both breed books and general books on showing, training and breeding etc. I cannot give a time as to when this will be completed, but at the moment it is a ‘work in progress’ and I look forward to being available online sometime in the future. Opening times for this year are not known, but I can always be contacted on 0407 961 025 if there is a book you would like to borrow. Many have done this in the past and I thank them for their support. Helen Acworth Librarian 20 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Book Review The Queensland Dog World This month’s member review is: ‘Dog Conformation and Its Evaluation’ ‘Common Genetic Diseases of the Dog’ Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian This month’s ‘Book Review’ features two books recently donated to the Library. The first ‘Dog Conformation and Its Evaluation’ was donated by the author and I quote for the opening paragraph:“Dog Conformation and its Evaluation is a fundamental manual for all who want to specialise in this field, from amateurs to professionals. Some of the chapters make extremely sophisticated reading while others are simpler.” With those words, I would expect that this book would be invaluable for all Judges. The book was first published in Moscow in 2008 and has lots of illustrations. The second selection for review ‘Common Genetic Diseases of the Dog’ is a book donated by Mr George Sofronidis of Orivet Genetic Pet Care. George was the speaker at a recent Education Seminar at Durack on 14th December, 2015. Those attending that seminar will most likely appreciate being able to have access to this book. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 21 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Shar -Pei Out of the Tombs Dogs Queensland Exclusive Written by Darcy Stratford Kennel: Ayzsa Shar-Pei Shar-Pei (literal translation from Cantonese) is ‘sand skin’ which refers to the short rough coat texture that is typical of the breed. Ancient History This ancient breed has its foundations as far back as 206 BC in a small town named Dah Let in the South China Province of Kwong Dong. As evidenced in the ancient tombs from around 2000, years ago, archaeologists discovered statues bearing the likeness of the Shar-Pei. Clearly, the Shar-Pei has known foundations as a Temple dog, however history shows this breed to be better known as a Chinese fighting dog. In reality, these dogs were multi-purpose working farm dogs that were used for hunting, tracking, herding, protecting livestock and as basic guard dogs. Ayzsa Relight My Fire (LuLu) Modern History Salvation Following the Chinese revolution in the 1940’s, communism was born. The new communist China imposed harsh taxes on the keeping of multiple dogs as this was considered to be a luxury. This ultimately led to the Shar-Pei becoming an endangered breed. In 1978, the Guinness Book of Records listed the Shar-Pei as ‘The world’s rarest dog’. In the early 1970’s, this rare and ancient breed was brought out of virtual extinction by the breed’s saviour Mr Matgo Law. Following a letter written to an American magazine by Mr Law, he pleaded to those who might be willing to pick up the challenge of rescuing the Shar-Pei from potential extinction. There was tremendous response from over 200 American dog enthusiasts that took up the challenge to save the breed. Bone-Mouth vs Western Meat Mouth It is widely thought that the original type of Shar-Pei is commonly known as the bone mouth. The traditional look had fewer wrinkles, roof-tile muzzle, pointed tail and short hair (sand paper coat). The modern day Shar-Pei as we know it ‘The Western Meat Mouth’ is a melting pot of integrating other breeds such as the Bull Mastiff, Chow Chow, Bull Dog, Boxer and the Bull Terrier. In contrast, Western Meat Mouth has a heavier muzzle (hippopotamus look) with meaty padding on top and generally has longer hair (Brush Coat). 22 - February 2016 The Standard and General Appearance General appearance: An alert compact dog of medium size and substance. The Shar-Pei should be square, close coupled and has a well-proportioned head in line with the body. Other characteristics include; distinctive lavender to blue black tongue, relatively loose skin on head and over shoulders, small ears, ‘hippopotamus’ muzzle shape, high set tail and compact well knuckled toes. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Est. 1977 For all your RIBBONS AND SASHES call Tina to discuss your club needs. Rynkls Hrsnround Inth Sunshine (Sven) Coat Types Horse coat – extremely short with a course sandy feel. Brush coat – must not exceed more than 2.5 cm at the withers and should still feel course and be off-standing. It is unacceptable and considered a major flaw to have a soft or wavy coat that exceeds 2.5 cm at the withers. Coat colours vary from black, blue, chocolate, lilac, 5 point red, red/fawn, fawn, cream etc. however the colour should be solid throughout. All are acceptable for showing. A more detailed description of the standard can be found at: www.dogsqueensland.org.au Health and Well-being The health and well-being of a Shar-Pei is largely determined by providing a well-balanced and nutritional diet that supports healthy skin/coat, brain development, eyes, bone density/strength, stamina, metabolism, dental care. www.dogsqueensland.org.au PHONE: (02) 4774 1809 109 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 www.marellenshowribbons.com [email protected] February 2016 - 23 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Lulu,Sven and Ayzsa Baby Im Burning (Dolly) Continued from page 23 Fundamental to this breed is a diet which is predominately made up from either chicken or fish. Many brands of dog kibble do contain both these basic ingredients however, the quality and grades do vary. The essential ingredients are as follows: • • • • No more than 22% protein (chicken or fish) Omega 3,6,9 fish oils Whole brown rice Vitamins and minerals Certain ingredients to avoid are as these are cheap fillers and offer no real nutritional value. Some of these include but are not limited to: • • • Soy based products Wheat bran and Corn gluten Beet pulp Some side effects of a poor nutritional diet are excessive shedding, dandruff, loose stools, gassiness, itchy skin. Other factors to consider with this breed regarding their health and well-being are eyes, ears and moderate exercise. • Ears – Closed ears and small canals often lead to bacterial infections therefore regular and thorough cleansing is required. • Eyes – As this breed can be susceptible to Entropion (eyelash rolling inwards) regular monitoring of the eyes is imperative to identify any irritation before leading to a more serious medical condition. • Exercise – The Shar-Pei requires only moderate daily exercise to maintain healthy muscle condition and mental alertness. This might consist of several short walks/runs, throwing a ball and general backyard fun. This makes them a versatile breed suitable for individuals or families looking for a low-medium maintenance dog. Photo credits: Photographer David Rogers Never feed a Shar-Pei red meat as this can lead to aggression and skin problems. 24 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World The Impressive and Regal Tibetan Mastiff Dogs Queensland Exclusive Compiled by Bronwen Dickson, Amitabha Tibetan Mastiffs The name Tibetan Mastiff (TM) does conjure up different images for people who don’t know the breed at all. Some question if it is like a Mastiff, Bullmastiff or Dogue de Bordeaux. Many are surprised that it is long coated with a well plumed tail curled over its back, with a mane around its neck. Some think it may be a Spitz breed being from Asia, but with a strong broad skull and square blocky muzzle, it is different again. This breed is at times grouped as a Mountain Dog which is very apt. However, the more time spent with this breed, you realise it is really quite unique. The History Behind a Rare and Noble Breed The TM is a land race breed that is believed to be one of the earliest existing breeds, yet it has only been in the last 10 years that the general population have even been aware of TMs. They are mentioned to have been an integral part of the lives of the likes of Genghis Khan, Marco Polo, the British Royal family and a US President. There are certainly many stories, myths and legends that surround the breed which adds to the intrigue for lovers of these majestic dogs from the roof of the world. A scientific study (Qi et al, 2008) identified that the genetic makeup of the Tibetan Mastiff originates from the Grey Wolf, like the majority of domestic dogs, but that the TM genetic divergence occurred around 16,000 years prior to the other breeds in the study. Skulls of large dogs from the area have been dated from the stone and bronze ages, and the first written account of the breed dates from around 1100BC from China. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 25 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Continued from page 25 In Tibet itself, the breed was traditionally known as Dokhyi, the name currently used for the breed in FCI countries. The breed was known as a fearless guardian dog by the Tibetan nomadic farmers who would keep the TM to alert them to strangers visiting their camp and to ward off predators of the goats and yaks, predominantly the Snow Leopard. TMs were also gifted to the monasteries where they were often at the front gates. Unfortunately, in the Chinese cultural revolution in 1959, many TMs were shot and killed during the invasion, heavily impacting the breed. The name Tibetan Mastiff was assigned to the “large dog from Tibet” when The Kennel Club in England formed the first stud book in 1873, well after Queen Victoria was first sent a TM named “Siring” by the Viceroy of India in 1847. The opening of the stud book saw a further trickle of imports to the UK and Europe until the Hon. Colonel and Mrs Bailey brought TMs from Tibet in 1928. They formed the Tibetan Breeds Association in 1931 when the first breed standard was adopted by The Kennel Club (England). The first TMs brought into the USA were apparently sent the President in the 1950s. 26 - February 2016 They were believed to be sent to a farm in the mid-west and nothing more was ever heard of them. From the 1970s, TMs were brought into the USA via Nepal and India. The first National Specialty Match was held in the USA in connection with the California Rare Breeds Dog Association in October 1979, with the Breed only gaining full AKC breed status in 2007. In Australia, the first 3 TMs were imported from the UK in 1983 by Pauline Leeton and Tudorhill Kennel in SA. Unfortunately one died shortly after arrival, resulting in the gene pool being too small for growth until further TMs were imported from the UK and USA in the 1990s. Certainly, with recent imports over the past decade, the breed is now well established across the country. The Pros and Cons of Popularity and Status on a Rare Yet Ancient Breed The Tibetan Mastiff has become much more widely known to the general public and recognised in the past 10 years with the media coverage given to the breed when 2 different Tibetan Mastiffs sold in China for over US$1 million. Having the tag of the most expensive dog in the world certainly draws attention, but is that attention positive? www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World to be screening their breeding stock for health issues. They also need to ensure that people who look to take on a Tibetan Mastiff are equipped to deal with this large, strong willed and self-thinking breed and want them for other than financial gain. As the breed has gained popularity in Australia, the number of TMs requiring rescue has regrettably ballooned in the last couple of years. I am sure that other breeds probably experience the same issues when their breed is featured in a movie or in advertising. The education provided by ethical breeders can go a long way to ensure that the breed and the puppy is the right fit, but not all breeders are ethical. Finally, for those of you who have never met a Tibetan Mastiff, don’t simply google the breed. See if you can meet one of these impressive dogs in person. This breed makes a wonderful therapy dog in many situations, which does not seem possible with the images that appear regularly online. The relationship developed over centuries with man has developed a unique understanding, and produced a temperament and disposition with initiative, fearlessness and controlled strength, balanced with patience, loyalty and gentleness. For the right family, the Tibetan Mastiff is a family member like no other. Information sourced from: With the Tibetan Mastiff becoming the status symbol for the emerging entrepreneurs of China in the mid-2000s, there were many enterprising people in China who looked to cash in on the economic boom the breed seemed to be providing. Breeding dogs were sold for $60,000 to $100,000, further fuelling the desire of people without an understanding of the breed to make an easy income. It needs to be known that there are some breeders in China who had the history and well-being of the breed at the heart of their endeavours. However, others looked to create a version of the breed that was bigger, hairier, more aggressive and with traits of other Chinese breeds. With the TM only having one season per year, the practice of cross breeding provided the unethical with the opportunity to have more puppies. The health and welfare of the dogs and the breed generally has suffered as a result. The 12-14 year traditional longevity of the breed has not continued in some lines that stem back to China, with some other health issues such as OCD starting to become far more prevalent. Temperaments can also be sharper and less predictable. This decade long popularity bubble in China has now burst, leaving many unwanted dogs. American Tibetan Mastiff Association. (2016). Contrary to popular belief, these dogs were not bred for food. In Asian countries, dogs were and still are used for food so there is a likelihood that Chow Chows may have been used for this purpose. However, the public buying and selling of Chow meat was prohibited by law in China in 1915. Chow Chows were used by the Monks to guard the Monasteries and Warriors used Chows to hunt man and beast. The Chows were used to bring down the adversaries and finally despatched by the Warriors. 28 - February 2016 Chow Chows were considered strange animals and utterly different from any other breed. They were described as having broad heads and short muzzles, to be of suspicious nature, surly and hostile to strangers but exceedingly courageous, known to attack a wolf without support of any kind. There is a description of huntsmen carrying lances with powerful long haired dogs with broad heads on a leash attached to a curious kind of body harness bound into an iron ring over the back, to which the leash is attached. The Chow Chow is an Asian Spitz breed aligned to rough coated, pricked ears and curly tailed breeds. The Chow Chow was first imported into the UK in the 18th Century having been bought from Canton, although their popularity did not happen until 1920 with having a number of Chows being exhibited at Crufts Dog Show in 1925. A theory has been put forth. In the early 1800’s when the Clipper Ships sailed regularly from China to England the hold of the ship where miscellaneous objects were stored was called the ‘Chow Chow’ hold because he had no usual or regular quarters. Eventually the dog took on the name of the place where he had lived for several months on the sea voyage from China. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Characteristics Of The Chow Chow The Chow Chow has several unique characteristics, being his short back and solid skeletal structure combined with his unique stilted movement resulting from little or no angulation at the stifle, giving him practically a straight back leg. The Chow Chow will have predominantly a long offstandish coat even though there are a few short coat examples of the breed. The Chow Chow has a blue/black tongue and the inside of the mouth and throat is black. Chow Chows come in a variety of colours whole coloured Black, Red, Blue, Fawn, Cream, or White, frequently shaded but not patches or parti coloured (the underpart of the tail and back of the thighs frequently of a lighter colour). The Chow Chow has often been considered to be an arrogant dog, but actually he is very proud, aloof and dignified who does not easily make friends but is loyal to his people, very often being attached to one member of his family. The Chow Chow has no vices, although he can be a difficult dog to train in the normal way of other dogs and is seldom or never seen in the Obedience Ring. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 29 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Continued from page 29 The Chow Chow has a will of his own and only obedient with members of his family. The Chow Chow is a well behaved dog and extremely clean in his habits. Over the last few decades most breeders have strived to breed a more amiable Chow Chow with a pleasant disposition and these dogs have become more tolerant of strangers and other dogs. Suitability An excellent family dog, the Chow Chow is usually very healthy. Best results are obtained by purchasing a young puppy and raising the puppy in the home and family envoirment. The Chow Chow is a dog that craves human companionship and as a reward, his family will have a long and happy relationship with their Chow Chow. Care and Maintenance of the Breed With the long off-standing coat, it is desirable to give the Chow a quick daily brush and once a week, a thorough brush to brush out any loose coat and knots and matting that may appear. This brushing also helps to keep the air circulation and keep the dog feeling fresh. As a double coated breed, Chows can cast their undercoat once or twice a year and it’s a good idea to get into the brushing as the new coat is growing. Chows do not need to be bathed often as this can contribute to the drying of the skin and coat and destroy the natural oils in the coat. The pads in between the toes will also need to be regularly trimmed. Remember, the more effort you put into your Chow Chow, he will repay you in loyalty and affection. They originated in Akita prefecture, the most northerly region of Akita. They were used for hunting in the mountains and were known as Matagi Inu. They were the ancestors of today’s Akita’s. Hunting remained an integral part of life until the early 1900s. They were only owned by the Shogun and were used to track and hunt Elk, Antelope, Wild Boar and Yezo Bears, giving rise to their legendary tenacious character. Later, dog fighting began and they were crossed with St. Bernards, Great Danes, German Pointers and Mastiffs. This produced the mastiff-type Tosa Inu. This cross breeding was the first set back for the Akita during the 1800s. 32 - February 2016 In 1908, dog fighting was prohibited and fanciers started restoring the breed. As a result, 9 superior examples of the breed were designated as National Monuments in 1931. During World War II, only German Shepherd dogs were exempt from being culled for meat and fur for the military. As a result, many owners crossed their Akita’s with German Shepherds to spare them. After the war ended, the number of Akita’s was drastically reduced and they existed as 3 distinct types – Matagi Akita, Fighting Akita and Shepherd Akita. After the war, there were two types used in the restoration of the breed, the Dewa line, which exhibited some Mastiff and German Shepherd characteristics and the Ichinoseki line, which was more true to the Matagi type. Most Akita’s taken back to USA at this time came from the Dewa line, while the Japanese continued to refine their Akita’s along the Matagi type. This has led to the 2 types we have today, the American Akita and the Japanese Akita. The Akita is not a breed for everyone, especially not for novice dog owners. They are a guarding breed and still retain their hunting instinct. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World They were hunted in pairs, not in packs like hounds, and does not want or need or like back up. Due to his heritage, he tends to be dominant over other dogs and will not back down from a challenge. However, Akita’s are extremely loyal to their families and will protect them with his life. He is very dignified, even as a puppy. They do not respond to harsh treatment and will become stubborn, instead firm consistent training will result in a well behaved family member. Remember, they are a dominant breed, so if you do not control that, they will. They can do Obedience, Agility, Jumping, Tracking, even therapy dogs etc, however they get bored very quickly with repetitive work, so you need to make it interesting for them. Short bursts of training are better than repetitive work for an Akita. They are ‘thinkers’ so want to know what and why. Akita’s molt heavily twice a year, so lots of brushing at this time to get the old coat out. They do not tend to smell and are very clean inside. They will clean themselves like a cat. Mud and dirt will tend to fall out of their coats. If they are in good condition, they do not need constant bathing. They do generally enjoy a good brush. They can suffer from some autoimmune mediated problems so always check that you are purchasing from a reputable breeder. Releasing this information before Christmas is a first for the EKKA and is seen as a great way to enable early planning, thus allowing many exhibitors across Australia to more effectively prepare for their show year and major trips away, and for our local exhibitors to work out just which day they might need off work. The information in a basic form was released via an email to Dogs Queensland members on the 18th December in the form of a letter and then links to the schedule. The information contained in the letter, for the many readers who did not receive it, outlined the judging system which will be a first for Australia trialled at the 2016 Canine Section of the EKKA. I was then asked by RNA Councillor and Dogs Queensland Director Lionel Blumel if I would like to provide to the readers some information on the new system at the EKKA. I have to say, that I am very pleased to do so as through my first hand experience working with the RNA. I know they are committed to improving the EKKA for us all every year. Not everything that is tried is going to work, and not everyone will be happy, but two important things must be remembered: • The Dog Section is still being housed in temporary facilities as the RNA undertakes one of the biggest urban redevelopments in Brisbane’s history. This means that for at least another year we aren’t going to have our beautiful new facility, but the good news is that this provides us with time to trial new ideas and provide feedback to the RNA so that when our new facility is completed the exhibitors will have had more input into the way it is put together and the supporting infrastructure. 34 - February 2016 • Things won’t be perfect for now! The up-side, as I said, is that by being proactive as exhibitors and actually entering and then providing feedback the chances of us getting the best dog facilities in the country are greatly improved. I know the RNA does want to be a leader in this area, and I also know for a fact that the RNA were very keen to read any feedback sent into them this year, and have responded to it. So what exactly is taking place and what is new for 2016? 1. Dogs will be judged in their groups on one day only by two international judges. This means unless you win a major In Group award, you only HAVE to attend one day. 2. FULL group specials will be judged each day, but only the Best in Group, Runner-Up, Puppy, Baby, and Neuter to come back on the last Saturday for General Specials. So this will make Saturday an easier day for exhibitors. 3. Obedience classes will be held over two afternoons while Dances with Dogs, Rally Obedience and Agility will all be held on the last day of show, which should provide competitors in dog sports and conformation ease in competing. 4. Friday 12th August will be a Toy Feature Show. Over the past two years, the RNA has introduced a group feature show, in 2014 it was Gundogs, and in 2015 it was Terriers. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World This has worked really well, but made for exceptionally long days. As part of the RNA’s commitment to improving the quality of the experience for exhibitors and making the EKKA as dog and exhibitor friendly as possible, and after listening to feedback, it was felt that the length of the days were not great for the dogs, or especially for older exhibitors who had to leave home in the dark and get home also late at night. This new plan should make for earlier exit times. 5. The RNA is already in talks with the Government and feels confident that parking will again be available across the road in the old Fortitude Valley State School. While this is yet to be officially confirmed, both parties are keen to sign off on this, which will again provide excellent close parking for most exhibitors. 6. The fantastic drop off and pick up initiative of 2015 is to be continued. The new drop off and pick up turning area worked incredibly well in 2015 and meant exhibitors literally could take 5 steps and be inside the venue. This provided a very friendly and close option for people with multiple dogs and is one of the closest facilities I have seen at a capital city Royal. Coupled with parking right across the road, it meant that from dropping off dogs to being all seated at our benches, even with our 11 dogs, took less than 10 minutes!! 7. Improved toileting facilities! I have spoken to Lionel Blumel and he assures me that areas of animal health and welfare are firmly at the forefront of the RNA’s mind, and they are committed to ensuring a safe healthy environment for the exhibits. As such, this is also being improved. Toileting facilities across the country are not great at capital city Royals, but again the RNA want to be the leader in this area and provide the best possible for our dogs. 8. The issue of access to and from the exhibitor benching areas to the rings and an improved assembly area cover is also being addressed by the RNA in efforts to make it easier with dogs both on leads and in trolleys to be moved from one point to the other. Again, this is only our temporary site and the RNA is taking on board all of these aspects with the design and construction of our permanent dog facilities. The change to allow Group Specials to be judged on the day of the breed judging, meaning one group is judged each day, allows exhibitors, spectators (including the general public) and trainee judges the opportunity to watch entire groups being judged, and for exhibitors to only have to travel back in for General Specials day on the Saturday 13th August, if they have won BIG, RUIG, Puppy, Baby or Neuter in Group. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Consultations for all species including house calls and farm visits Reliable 24/7 After Hours Emergency Service Canine Reproductions Services including: Caesarian Sections In-house Progesterone Testing and Vaginal Cytology Evaluations Natural and Surgical Artificial Insemination or TCI (Trans Cervical Insemination) Semen Collection, Analysis, Freezing, Storage and Transport Services AQIS Accredited for export Ultrasonography Digital Radiography AVA and Penn Hip Scoring Genetic Testing Caring and Experienced Veterinarians Drs. Two additional changes see Sweepstakes being completed on the Saturday of General Specials, allowing for a full range of breeds to potentially be available to view by the public, and also a very important change is the addition of class in group awards. Dogs will now be able to compete for their class in group, just like at a regular all breeds show, except there will not be General Specials, except for the standard classes as per previous years. This gives more opportunities for exhibitors to share in the joy of winning, and should provide exhibitors with an incentive to possibly enter more dogs. I think these initiatives are a clear indication of the fact that the RNA are trying to be proactive in regards to the dog section and are keen to not only be responsive to the issues, concerns and ideas that come from the exhibitors, but also are demonstrating a real desire to initiate changes that will see the exhibitors and exhibits provided with greater care and concern. I look forward to seeing you there. February 2016 - 37 Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World Zone 2 Dog World Column February 2016 A few tips or things to consider to look after the safety and wellbeing of yourself, others and our dogs include: • Don’t drive tired – please make sure that you have had adequate sleep and rest before driving long distances. If this means that you need to stop for a snooze part of the way through your journey to or from an event, please do so. Driving fatigued or tired is exceptionally dangerous for all road users. • Keep cool and well hydrated – particularly as you move further north in the state, events are often held in warm conditions and it is important for us and our dogs to be cool and well hydrated, so consider using fans, wet towels, ice, cool coats and mats to keep cool and make sure that plenty of fluids are consumed to avoid headache, exhaustion and heat stroke. Take advantage of shade, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself. • Please ensure that gazebos, shelters and tents, and the like are pegged down appropriately – particularly where there is poor weather and high winds, it is very important that shade is very securely pegged down to avoid it taking off and being damaged, or worse, damaging someone else’s’ property. Activities in Zone 2 have again commenced as we move into what is becoming an increasingly busy event calendar. I’m sure after the Christmas and New Year Break and the hotter part of the year, members are keen to once again enjoy their hobby. What’s on in Zone 2 in February? We are still easing into the year due to the warm weather with a few events in February, these will increase as we get to the cooler part of the year. For February, members can enjoy: • Mt Morgan and Bouldercombe Kennel Club Champ Shows (Rockhampton) - 20th and 21st February • Gympie and District Kennel Club Champ Show (Gympie) – 28th February There are also several shows outside of the Zone in the Brisbane area and north at Thuringowah that our keener Zone 2 members may be travelling to. Drought Relief Fundraiser Shows At the time of writing this column, these shows have not yet been held, but I want to express thanks to all members who participated in the two championship shows and the virtual shows to raise funds for our struggling people on the land. A big thank you should also be extended to those who have worked hard to bring these shows together, particularly Susie Carige and Jenny Sweeney. Also, a huge thank you to the Gladstone Kennel Club for allowing the use of the Gladstone venue to hold these shows. Safety We often travel long distances at odd times to attend events, and it is very important to ensure that we are mindful of our safety and well-being as incidents that can impact, not only us, but other people and our dogs. 38 - February 2016 We all want to be able to enjoy and participate in our hobby in a safe manner so that we can all return home in good shape at the end of the day. By being aware and conscious of the things we can do to ensure ours and our dogs safety and well-being, our events can be more enjoyable and a healthy activity for us. Show Workers During December last year, Show Workers training was conducted successfully in Bundaberg and Rockhampton. The participants engaged in the day and everyone came out of the session learning something new. It is so valuable and important that our members willing to assist at shows can participate in this training to equip them with the practical and theoretical knowledge to perform the roles. More training sessions will be available in Zone 2 during 2016 so please, keep your eye out for these and get involved. The more accredited workers we have, the easier and lighter the load for everyone will be at shows and the rules section I guarantee will stand you in good stead to understand how the intricacies of our hobby work. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World Of course, if you would like some real, ‘on the job’ training, please talk to the Show Manager at your next show to see if there are some opportunities for you to work with an experienced show worker. • Listen to the directions of show officials carefully and obey these – decisions are generally made for a purpose and so that events run smoothly and without issue – please don’t place show workers in difficult positions by openly defying requests. Rules in Action – Incidents at Events (Rules 249 to 258) • There is paperwork and information required if there is any type of issue relating to injuries at events – this is for insurance and legal purposes. If you are hurt at an event, medical assistance will be offered and members are encouraged to use this if there is any suspicion of an injury, you can’t be too careful and refusal of medical treatment may result in a more intense injury later on. • In situations where any disputes or issues are unfolding, please inform the Show Manager or officials so that it can hopefully be managed before it becomes a real problem. No, I am not going to type out 10 rules in their entirety, but it is very important for members to understand that Dogs Queensland does have rules and procedures that need to be observed when there is an incident at an event, and to be familiar with them. The incidents can include: • • • Dog bites or aggression; Damage to people, or property; and Complaints and protests There are other types of incidents but these examples are the ones that will require a significant amount of attention on the day of the event, so managing them correctly and being aware of the processes is pretty critical. I will leave members to check out the actual rules for the wording and content but a few really important tips to avoid or deal with a potential or actual incident at an event include: • • • Ensuring your dog is always under effective control and you are aware of your surroundings – avoid taking your dog into very crowded areas, or walking through or into assembly areas for other groups, move out of ring entrance areas and keep them clear. Often Stewards will ask exhibits for the next group to not move into the assembly area until the previous group is finished and the exhibitors have moved out – there is a very good reason for this as it minimises the risk of an issue during the commotion of a changeover; Become familiar with the rules so you understand what the potential issues are and what will happen if you are involved in an incident – if in doubt contact Dogs Queensland or talk to an accredited Show Manager for clarification of matters that are not clear; Everyone wants to participate in their hobby without unpleasantness or issues, so by being aware that Dogs Queensland has some pretty effective processes to manage issues and officials who have had some level of training in managing these, if we also follow good practice and careful consideration, we should be able to achieve this. Also, Dogs Queensland have a very hard-working Constitution and Rules Committee and Event Managers and Stewards Committee, who are constantly reviewing issues, incidents, rules and processes to ensure that these are managed in the best way possible. These committees are very active in implementing improvements where these are identified so please also keep your eye out for any amendments in relation to the rules relating to incidents. Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: [email protected] Until next time. If you are involved in an incident (even if it is an unpleasant occurrence for you), please do not leave the event. For incidents that are dealt with on the day, it is important that you are present as proceedings can and will be conducted without you if you are not there. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 39 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World German Shepherds Dogs T h e H o n o u r a n d P r i v i l e g e Wa l k 2 0 1 5 Wr i t t e n b y L o u i s D o n a l d n Sunday 15th November 2015, the ‘German Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland’ and ‘German Shepherd Dogs in Need’ came together to conduct the ‘Honour and Privilege Walk’ with the goal of creating a Queensland State record for the most number of German Shepherd Dogs walked at one time and at one venue. Founder of GSD's in Need, Lisa Jenkins As well as trying for the record, the event was used to raise much needed funds for the ongoing care of rescued GSDs. Dogs Queensland generously supported the event by providing the wonderful venue and facilities at the Durack Sports grounds. German Shepherd Dogs in Need’ started as a Facebook page created by Lisa Jenkins highlighting the plight of German Shepherd Dogs in pounds and shelters throughout Australia. From this early beginning, German Shepherd Dogs in Need developed a group of individuals who could accommodate the needs of those dogs. This included boarding, evaluating, training and rehabilitating those neglected and abused dogs. Walker with certificate at end The organisation has grown rapidly under the guidance of Justyn Bedford and Sam Hardy–Edwards with a fantastic team of supporting admin and foster carers who have rehabilitated and saved the lives of many dogs. “Sadly we depend on donations,” said Sam Hardy Edwards from GSD’s In Need. “We do our best to ensure every German Shepherd Dog in the rescue receives the necessary veterinary care, and the very best rehabilitation. Some dogs, particularly the seniors, are ‘forever foster’ dogs and we continue to pay for their veterinary care and ensure they have a good quality of life while living with their devoted foster care family.” 40 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World Start of Walk at Durack The event also provided an excellent platform and media exposure for the German Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland, official guardian of the German Shepherd Dog in Queensland. The club encourages members to be pro-active in the promotion of the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia’s breed improvement schemes and is the largest single breed club in Queensland. With over 400 registered for the Walk and approximately 350 dogs participating on the day, it was quite a spectacle with lots of media in attendance to record the fun! The morning started with an introduction by Rod Vernon, President of the GSDCQ, and myself as MC for the event. The objectives of Dogs in Need and the GSDCQ were conveyed to the participants with an emphasis placed on the need to only buy German Shepherd Dogs from registered breeders. The German Shepherd Dog is first and foremost a family dog, a working dog and a service dog. The number of dogs, their owners and families attending the Walk clearly demonstrated these qualities and for me was the best example of this I had seen for a very long time. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 41 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World Walkers further up hill Continued from page 41 In perfect weather, the scenic one kilometre walk commenced with a flurry – it was quite a sight to see so many dogs and handlers excitedly moving through the starting line with great beaming smiles enjoying the interaction with their dogs. For the veterans a shorter 300 metre walk was provided and the oldest dog to complete the walk was 14 years of age! As the crowds moved through the Finish Line they were warmly congratulated and presented with a certificate to acknowledge their dog’s participation and completion of the walk. After the walk, a number of demonstrations were held and enjoyed by the owners of the dogs and their families. First up was a talk and obedience demonstration, ably managed and directed by Val Bonney, who is one of the leading dog trainers in Australia. Val, a Canine Behaviorist and lecturer, gave a great talk on the benefits of dog ownership and dog training. Her GSD team demonstration was extremely well received by the attending crowd. 42 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World There was a very entertaining presentation of ‘dog dancing’ with a brilliantly trained six year old GSD named Honour handled by Robyn Thomas who impressed everyone with her training skills and Honour’s sheer joy and enthusiasm in performing. It was a delight to watch. Val Bonney considers Robyn’s demonstration one of the best she has ever seen – high praise indeed. I was invited to provide a small mock show dog demonstration with some of the GSDCQ members and their dogs, explaining the characteristics of the German Shepherd Dog and the relevance of the written standard. Finally a video was displayed on a giant screen showing case studies of German Shepherd Dogs that had been saved. It was very moving and there were plenty of tears around the place. WARNING, Contents of video are graphic: Assembly Walk showing video screen www.youtube.com/watch?v=odT-16krabo Congratulations also to Dogs Queensland who produced a video of the event which can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj8m_bkhN7c This was one of the best, one of the most positive German Shepherd Dog days I have ever attended. Everyone was there for the breed and the cause. Everyone had a smile and a good word. Everyone simply enjoyed being at an event that was there for fun and enjoyment with their German Shepherds and their well-being. Many people to mention in thanks for all the work and coordination behind the scenes but a few of particular note being Diane Ballantyne, Edi Fearon, Sue Robertson, Norma Zimmerle, Carolyn Pearen, John Hansen, Daryl Cross, Helen Mackie and Gail Donald who was the club Photographer. Like many people, I am guilty of being very selective in what I choose to read in any magazine. But this time, I was delighted to find a well written article which is a plus. The columnist has sought to address the ever present problem of bad behaviour at dog shows. I commend the author for her column. But many people have dragged out the Good Manners Chart and many have preached the Good Manners at Shows gospel before this time. Unfortunately, all the preaching on the subject seems to have little bearing on the correction of bad behaviour. It is in the nature of people themselves and innately polite people know how to behave and the obnoxious crowd can be relied on to make scenes. The Board of Directors can fine, suspend or administer a variety of punishments but there is scant chance of reformation of habitual offenders. I did notice that recently the President was moved to discuss bad behaviour. I would hazard a guess that the offenders are guilty of never reading any of these cautions. But if people are looking for answers to these problems, there are none. There is no respect shown to authority in most places these days. Yes, it is offensive when, as a judge, I am faced with the huff and puff of a vanquished exhibitor leaving the ring with a lesser quality exhibit. It is offensive when I am showing my dog and my opposition gives an audible critique of my dog from the ringside. It is offensive when a steward takes the liberty of advising the judge about their perception of quality in the ring. But the very worst behaviour, I believe, lies in character assassination. This can have serious health consequences for many people who have been victimised. I have been a fancier, club member, club official, a breeder, a steward and a judge in the Dog World for longer than I care to mention and have witnessed some appalling behaviour. I have been a victim of some of the plots. I do not wish to revisit them. But there are many good and helpful people who show dogs and I am happy to call them my friends. They know how to behave properly wherever fame, fortune and misfortune take them. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 45 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World SHOW CHATwith Ashlyn Montgomery Comedian, Radio Announcer and Mum Ashlyn Montgomery is the daughter of group 6 judge Dr. Sue Montgomery and protégée of all-breeds veteran Stefanie Smith. Find her showing Chihuahuas and Bichons (and the odd Dobermann or Rotty) around SE QLD and Northern NSW, usually hanging onto a baby with one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Drop her an email any time from the Mexicatl website - www.mexicatl.com Your First Showdog Take a trip down memory lane with me and think about your first showdog. If you don’t count the dogs I grew up with, my own very first showdog was the beautiful Bichon Frise ‘Kelzarki Choose Me’, aka Sasha. She was a stunning Bichon in every sense, her biggest handicap my average scissoring skills. I got her at the tender age of twenty and paid for her with money I won on the TV show ‘Deal or No Deal’, I kid you not! She is retired now, but is still my babysitter, bed dog and best friend. I could easily tell you about my Mum’s first Dobermans Shonte and Leah, for my own safety I won’t tell you how long ago that was. Or my best friend Mon’s first Dalmatian Layla. We all have that special first show dog that we remember fondly for the contribution they made to our lives. My first show dog that I owned independently of my family was an exceptional example of her breed and I enjoyed great success with her in the ring, but I feel that this is where my experience with my “first one” is different from many of us. 46 - February 2016 My mother will happily admit that her first Doberman Leah was a bit of a flop as a show dog and it does seem to me that this is far more the norm than having a great one first up. But you know what? That’s totally ok!! If you are in the ring with your first show dog now and are feeling disheartened that you keep getting beaten for those precious challenge points every weekend, let me reassure you that nearly every person in the dog world has been there. When you get started in a new breed, it takes time to really learn how to interpret your standard. You have to see lots of examples of your breed and talk to lots of other people about them. Your second show dog will be better. For a number of reasons. Firstly, you get to know breeders of great dogs and you prove that you can be trusted to be a proper “show home”. Secondly, by the time you’re ready for your second, you have started to develop an understanding of what style of dog you like and can make your own judgement on quality. For many, the second show dog is when you really got a handle on your grooming, training and ring craft. Here’s where I bring the controversy to February. My concern is that too many exhibitors are getting burnt out before they’re able to get to that magical second – better – show dog. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World Understand that my intention here is never to offend, but I have seen first-hand while stewarding and while exhibiting, older and very experienced exhibitors criticising, belittling and discouraging new exhibitors. New exhibitors can be slow. As we’ve already covered, often their dog is pretty average. But you know what? We need them!! It’s such a basic concept that seems to be so easily forgotten. We need to attract new exhibitors and include them into our world, or eventually the only breeders left will be the ones breeding fifty pugapoos a month. Say it with me. Pugapoos. Nobody wants that. “When you get started in a new breed, it takes time to really learn how to interpret your standard. You have to see lots of examples of your breed and talk to lots of other people about them”. If they ask you for an opinion of their dog and you are really struggling to say something positive, just have a laugh and say “Nobody has a perfect first showdog, but I can chat to you about the standard and show you some of my dogs if you like?”. Pointing out all the faults in a newbie’s dog, complaining about their lack of understanding the ring craft or snarking about their daggy clothes is unnecessary. Keeping our new exhibitors hooked on the competition is, on the other hand, very necessary! To my wonderful mentors over the years, Stefanie Smith, the late Pam Coleman, Les Bradney (to name a few), thank you. I hope one day I can regift the knowledge you shared with me to others. As always, if you see me in the catalogue pop on down to group one and say g’day. The change I want to see in the Dog World starts with me. Until next month my friends! Xx Ash I know that the website Showmanager.com has started matching new exhibitors looking for help with older mentors. There are some great Facebook pages like “Australian Dog Show Newbies” that seem to be very supportive forums for new exhibitors. Even if it’s only in a small way, I encourage everyone to have a quick look at these and reassure themselves that there are people still willing to help others. I myself am making an effort to welcome and encourage people who are new to our sport, but I acknowledge that it can be very difficult. Not every new exhibitor is destined to become your best friend and not everyone shares your passion. At the worst end of the scale, you can invest a lot of time and effort into someone who seems very keen on showing dogs, only to have them drop off the face of the earth. It’s upsetting when that happens, especially if you’ve trusted that person with one of your dogs. At the end of the day, we need to take that risk, or we can look down the barrel of a sport and a competition that will see less and less participation. Don’t make me say pugapoo again. Next time you see a newbie wandering off when they still have to go back in for the challenge lineup, give them a hoy and let them know there’s more to go. www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 47 Club Interest The Queensland Dog World The Beagle Club of Queensland Sets World Record! Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Jeff Souter - President On the 6th of December, the Beagle Club of Queensland set a world record for the largest Beagle pack ever assembled. The record was set as part of the Beagles Across Australia national event and was set on the Southport Spit. Since 2010 the Beagle Club of Queensland has held its final event for the year on the Gold Coast. The event is a walk along the beach on the Southport Spit for our Beagles and their owners, with a Christmas morning tea held afterwards. This walk has been a very enjoyable and fun event and as a result, the number of Beagles and people attending the walk has increased since it was first held. In 2012, our number reached 75. For 2013, the Club pushed to get the numbers over 100, something we didn’t imagine 12 months before. That year, we reached 153 Beagles for our walk. With the increase in numbers and interest from many avenues, the Beagle Club of Queensland initiated the event now known as ‘Beagles Across Australia’. This event is a day for all Beagle clubs around Australia, along with members in various regional locations, to get out and celebrate the breed. In 2014 we had more than 350 Beagles across the country participating in this simultaneous celebration of the breed. Walks took place in more than 10 centres across Australia, from Cairns and Townsville in North Queensland, to Perth in the west. We also had interest and walks taking place overseas in Germany and Qatar. 48 - February 2016 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Club Interest The Queensland Dog World As a result of this first Beagles Across Australia event and, with media coverage from the Gold Coast Bulletin and Channel 7, the numbers for our Southport Spit walk reached 186, despite torrential rain before and during the walk. In July 2015 at the Beagle National in the USA, 200 Beagles assembled in a pack – a world record for the largest Beagle pack. Their claim to this record challenged the Beagle Club of Queensland to beat the record as part of Beagles Across Australia for 2015. The wheels were set in motion to make this event our biggest yet and to see if we could set a record. The Club went about making this a ‘Beagle Bonanza’, with stalls, raffles, prizes and fun and games for the Beagles, along with the world record attempt. Media outlets were notified and the event was advertised on Facebook, the Club web site and on the Beagles Across Australia web site. The stage was set. As the Beagles and their owners began to congregate at Federation Park, opposite Sea World on the Gold Coast, the numbers were looking very promising. Almost every car that drove down Seaway Drive had at least one Beagle, smiling in anticipation. The numbers kept increasing – 50, 100, 150. Journalists from the Gold Coast Bulletin and two TV stations had arrived to take in the spectacle. Had we reached the record? Even if we didn’t achieve the record, it was going to be a fabulous day. The Beagles and their owners moved from Federation Park to the beach – a feat in itself. There were Beagles everywhere. The count kept going up. At the official start time of the walk, we had assembled an amazing 403 Beagles on Main Beach. This was more than double the record set in the USA earlier in the year. www.dogsqueensland.org.au The number blew everyone away. We had no idea we would achieve such numbers. The media were having a field day, taking video and photos of the mass of Beagles, sniffing, playing and enjoying this event. With the record broken, the focus moved to the walk. Having more than 400 Beagles walking north along Main Beach was a sight in itself. As the pack returned, the Club had organised morning tea, drinks, merchandise stalls for everyone to enjoy, and information about Beagle welfare, the Club and the breed. We had two photo booths for people to take photos of their Beagles with Santa. Beagles Across Australia T shirts were available to celebrate the event, as well as club merchandise items. Most importantly, the Club was able to enjoy the breed in the best way possible – by getting together, enjoying time with other Beagle owners and to take one day out to celebrate the breed with other Beagle owners across the country. Beagles Across Australia and the walk on Southport Spit was an amazing event for our Club and one that has enabled us to promote the breed to a level we could not have imagined. In total, we had close to 600 Beagles walking across the country, with walks taking place across Queensland in Cairns, Townsville, Charters Towers, Toowoomba and Hervey Bay, as well as in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. USA has already thrown down the gauntlet to break our record next year, so the challenge is now on to hold onto or break our record. And who knows – with such interest is this event, maybe Beagles Across Australia in 2016 will go global! We were very fortunate to have three excellent guest speakers with diverse areas of expertise. Due to the interest shown by members of the dog world, attendance had to be limited to 100 participants. The morning commenced with speakers Dean and Matt – Officers from the Queensland Police Dog Squad. Dean and Matt kept everyone very entertained with the training methods used for police dogs and gave handlers who were interested in the world of tracking great information on ways to get their dogs started in the sport of tracking. Debby Lamprecht A very happy audience Dean and Matt were followed by Debby Lamprecht. Debby is a Tracking and Track & Search Judge, involved in NoseWorks for Dogs and a proponent of Scent Dynamics. Debby’s talk and very interesting presentation on Scent Dynamics gave attendees an in depth understanding of how scent works and how the dog’s nose works when interpreting scents. All this provided a great foundation for those handlers interested in doing any type of scent work with their dogs. The final speaker for the seminar was Greg Horrocks. Greg is a chemical detection dog handler with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Greg spoke of how dogs are used within the Department for many varying activities from finding chemicals, insects, scat and other areas in biosecurity. The morning concluded with two practical demonstrations by Greg’s dogs. A very big thank you goes to the speakers for this seminar and to all those who assisted on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly as well as organising a very enjoyable morning tea. 50 - February 2016 Greg Horrocks www.dogsqueensland.org.au Club Interest The Queensland Dog World Agility Sub-Committee Fundraiser Trial Purple Agility and Jumpers Trial Held at Durack on 5th December, 2015 Judged by: Mr Robert Mills (pictured far left) and Mrs Barbara Murfet (pictured far right) www.dogsqueensland.org.au February 2016 - 51 Show Schedules The Queensland Dog World Show day: Sunday, 3rd April 2016 January amendments and notes PINE RIVERS KENNEL CLUB Belgian Shepherd Club of Queensland: Open Shows 6th March 2016, Brace will be run as a Class at both Shows Poodle Club of Queensland: Open Shows 6th March 2016.
