Caring lives health touching improving Remembering Marjorie A. Compton… spring 2003 Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation Annual Report IN THIS ISSUE Farewell to Chairman Mike Dickerson Stronger, Faster and Better Trauma Services Campaign Raises Over $200,000 for Tools and Training Marjorie Compton Leaves $1 Million Gift Highest National Quality Rating for MRH In Gratitude to 2002’s Donors A Farewell Message from the Chairman As I reflect on my nine-year involvement with Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation, it’s gratifying to see the progress we’ve experienced. Thanks to effective marketing and our targeted annual campaigns, more people than ever before understand who we are and what we stand for. MICHAEL J. DICKERSON Chairman Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors As the fundraising affiliate of Middletown Regional Hospital, our mission is to achieve and maintain the highest possible health status among all residents of our Mid-Miami service area. The Foundation works hard to realize this in a number of ways, most notably through annual campaigns that have eased the suffering of patients and families by providing them with a variety of expanded healthcare opportunities. Thanks to our generous contributors—from hospital personnel and volunteers to the many businesses and individuals who have contributed their hard-earned dollars— we’ve surpassed our financial goal in each of seven campaigns. We’ve been successful because people believe in the work of the Foundation, knowing that part of their personal mission is to practice compassion by helping others in the community. I’m grateful to executive director Linda Baxter and her staff, Jessica Woodard and Virginia Peters, for their excellent work and tireless dedication. I also thank Doug McNeill and the hospital staff, physicians and nurses who work so hard to make MRH the excellent hospital it is and will continue to be. The Foundation’s directors, past and present, are also to be commended; they are this organization’s greatest asset and will ensure its continued success. We are fortunate to have Don Pelfrey as the incoming board chairman. As an executive committee member, Don has demonstrated tremendous leadership for the Foundation and Middletown Regional Health System. He will do a great job! In closing, it’s been a rewarding experience for me to be associated with the Foundation and the health system. I appreciate the trust you’ve given me and the opportunity to be of service. Best regards, Michael J. Dickerson Chairman Thank You for Your Remarkable Contribution On behalf of the Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation board and staff, I’d like to thank Mike Dickerson for his outstanding leadership, as a board member since 1994 and as its chairman since 1999. Mike’s passion for his community and support of its hospital are unparalleled. His leadership and vision have been instrumental in so many ways—in the success of our annual campaigns, in spreading awareness about the Foundation and its mission, in recruiting new board members, and in strategic planning for our many initiatives. Thank you, Mike, for your remarkable contribution to Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation’s progress and success. We wish you all the best! Sincerely, Linda C. Baxter, Executive Director LINDA C. BAXTER Executive Director, Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation For more information about ways to give to Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation, please contact Linda C. Baxter, executive director, (513) 420-5144 or (800) 338-4057 ext 5144. Annual Fund Campaign Raises Over $200,000 for Trauma Care and Prevention When seconds count, Mid-Miami residents can count on a stronger, faster and betterequipped trauma response system thanks to the generosity of area residents, businesses and civic organizations. Through their support, the Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation has raised more than $200,000 to provide much-needed tools, training and technology to all area emergency medical squads (EMS) and the Middletown Regional Hospital trauma center. Celebrating the successful conclusion of the Trauma Care Community Outreach Program are Mike Dickerson, chairman, Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors; campaign co-chairs, Middletown Fire Chief John J. Sauter and Terry Raszka; and Doug McNeill, president and CEO, Middletown Regional Health System. Not pictured is campaign co-chair Dr. Clyde Watson. “On behalf of the many people who will benefit from these enhanced trauma services, we want to thank each person who made our Trauma Care Community Outreach Program a success,” said Michael J. Dickerson, chairman of the Foundation board. “Trauma is the number one cause of death among people ages 1 to 44. But thanks to your help, we’re working to reduce the impact of trauma in our local communities.” During a special donor recognition event on February 18, Dickerson joined hospital and Foundation representatives in thanking campaign co-chairs Terry Raszka, Middletown Fire Chief John J. Sauter and Dr. Clyde Watson. Campaign officials also recognized first responders from 26 area emergency medical squads for their outstanding service to the community, pledging that a major portion of the campaign’s proceeds will purchase lifesaving equipment and training for the squads. “Because equipment needs vary dramatically from squad to squad, each EMS in Butler and Warren counties will submit a specific request for what they need,” explained Chief Sauter. “The objective is that all of the area’s EMS teams receive consistent training and equipment, so that whether someone is injured in a remote rural area or a city, the care from the rescue squad is standard and state-of-the-art.” Campaign funds will also be used to purchase specialized trauma equipment for the hospital’s emergency, critical care, surgery and rehab departments, as well as to implement a community-wide trauma prevention program. “It’s a sign of the times we live in that trauma is a public health problem of epidemic proportion in many communities,“ said Douglas W. McNeill, president and CEO of Middletown Regional Health System. “That’s why we felt it was necessary to raise the bar on this region’s trauma care now, rather than waiting until a new hospital is built.” McNeill explained that Middletown Regional Hospital—southwest Ohio’s third busiest emergency department—is working to become a verified Level 3 trauma center later this year, with a future vision of becoming a Level 2 center. “Middletown Regional Hospital is committed to providing the finest care possible to patients with traumatic injuries,” he said. By making this region’s trauma team stronger and more responsive in that critical hour, there’s no doubt we’re saving lives.” Marjorie Compton Touched Future Generations with the Gift of Health Marjorie A. Compton was known for many things. Her infectious smile and wit. Her beautiful singing voice. Her compassion for others, exemplified by her service as a Stephen Minister at First Presbyterian Church in Middletown. And her generosity of spirit, seen in her devotion as a 20-year volunteer at Middletown Regional Hospital. “She was very meticulous—conscientious about anything she did,” said longtime friend Mary Kindell, “but she also had a tremendous sense of humor and was a lot of fun.” On September 9, 2002, Marjorie Compton— faithful friend of MRH and the hospital’s largest donor to date—passed away, leaving a legacy that will touch future generations with the gift of health. Prior to her passing, Ms. Compton gifted 80 acres of Monroe farmland to Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation. Valued at $1 million, it was the largest gift ever given to the Foundation. “She placed great trust in this hospital and felt strongly about the quality of healthcare here,” said Douglas W. McNeill, president and CEO of Middletown Regional Health System. “My sense was that, like many people in our corner of southwest Ohio, Marjorie was touched by the level of care she had personally received from Middletown Regional Hospital. She turned that gratitude into a lifelong commitment to helping others receive the same care.” In May 2002, Ms. Compton was diagnosed with untreatable pancreatic cancer. But even when confined to a bed, she continued to give. Her lovely baby grand piano was given to Mount Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe. Her clothes were all donated to the MRH thrift shop. But Ms. Compton’s most pressing consideration was the Monroe farmland she had inherited from family. “Marjorie had no children, and when she began to think about gifting the land, she looked at many non-profit organizations and worthy causes she believed in,” said McNeill. “We were very grateful she decided to give the land to us, and we look forward to giving her permanent recognition in our new hospital facility.” Although health system officials are still considering how Ms. Compton’s gift can best serve the healthcare needs of the community she loved, one thing is certain: her selfless generosity will not be forgotten. A graduate of Middletown High School and the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, Ms. Compton returned to the Middletown area to work as a secretary/receptionist at Armco Steel Co. Upon retiring in 1982, she began volunteering at the hospital, ultimately serving in the inpatient pharmacy. “Marjorie was one of those people who just wanted to serve without calling any attention to herself. She was a consummate lady,” said Priscilla Lane, manager of volunteer services. “In all, she gave nearly 4,200 hours of service to the hospital.” ”My sense was… Marjorie was touched by the level of care she had personally received. She turned that gratitude into a lifelong commitment to helping others receive the same care.” – Douglas W. McNeill President and CEO Middletown Regional Health System 5 viewpoint Fourth High Quality Rating Confirms Hospital’s Excellence Viewpoint by Douglas W. McNeill, FACHE, President and CEO, Middletown Regional Health System Every healthy family knows the value of regular checkups. But healthy hospitals can benefit from routine checkups too—which is why Middletown Regional Hospital recently completed its triennial voluntary evaluation and on-site inspection from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious healthcare accrediting body. And the prognosis? The hospital scored a stellar 99 out of 100 points and was awarded “Accreditation with Full Standards Compliance,” the top honor Joint Commission bestows. We have averaged a score of 99 for four consecutive surveys over 12 years, a record unheard of in the industry and unparalleled in the region. Knowing the tremendous commitment to quality shared by our employees, medical staff and volunteers—all of whom contributed to this achievement—this level of recognition should come as no surprise. In the past decade, the hospital has been very proactive and aggressive in identifying and addressing quality issues. Our progressive quality management program touches every department, challenging each individual in our health system to help raise the bar on quality in meaningful and measurable ways. By establishing measurable objectives and outcomes within each department, and by striving to exceed those objectives in everything we do, Middletown Regional Hospital has consistently demonstrated that when it comes to quality care, we are indeed moving forward. The hospital scored a stellar 99 out of 100 points and was awarded “Accreditation with Full Standards Compliance.” Of course, the reason we emphasize quality is not awards and accolades, but the people we serve. Perhaps the strongest indication that our quality process is working comes from the mail that regularly flows across my desk—like the following note from Mrs. W.R. Klaus of Glendale: Dear Mr. McNeill, Please know that our family is extremely impressed with the quality of care and outstanding customer service we received at Middletown Regional Hospital. We mean it emphatically when we say we were pleased and delighted at virtually every stage of our visit Aug. 7 for my six-year-old son’s hernia operation. MRH is a best practice in customer service—not only within the medical industry, but in any industry. In a day when we’ve come to expect delays, mistakes, harried and frazzled service, especially in an industry well-known for its manic cost concerns, you personally and your staff deserve to be recognized for outstanding work. committed 6 High marks like these are not laurels to rest on, but motivation to press on in pursuit of new frontiers of excellence. Thanks for your continued support as we strive to bring ever-improving care to you and your family! CareView Home Health, the home health affiliate of Middletown Regional Health System, has acquired new TeleHome Care technology, allowing in-home “video visits” between chronically ill patients and their clinicians. “TeleHome Care is the leading edge of home health delivery,” said Jennie Schumpp, president of CareView. “This electronic system provides live, twoway video communication between the patient and a CareView nurse, allowing us The TeleHome Care monitoring units allow chronically ill patients at home to have a to make remote clinical "video visit" with a CareView Home Health nurse. This poses a variety of planning issues: • How much must I take out from my IRA or retirement plan each year? • Whom should I designate as the beneficiary of my IRA or retirement plan so as to achieve my estate planning objectives and minimize taxes? • I want to make sure that charities that are important to me are not forgotten after my death. Should I consider using my IRA as a way to reach that goal? Federal income tax laws require that owners and beneficiaries of qualified retirement plans, IRAs, §403(b) arrangements and certain deferred compensation arrangements must receive a minimum required distribution each year. This obligation usually begins with the year in which the owner reaches age 70-1/2. (Many qualified retirement plan participants who work beyond age 70-1/2 don’t have to begin receiving minimum required distributions until they actually retire.) New IRS regulations allow for the use of a longer period over which to make these required distributions. As a result, if the participant and her family can afford to defer receiving IRA distributions, the new regulations allow the family to defer paying federal income taxes. The less that is distributed, the less that must be included in income, and the more that can stay in the IRA and grow tax-free. Participating in a qualified retirement plan? Upon retirement, participants can leave their account balance in the qualified retirement plan. But that may not be the best choice. The qualified plan may require distributions on death much sooner than would be required if the participant had rolled over her retirement plan benefit into an IRA. The sooner the distributions occur, the more quickly federal taxes must be paid. 8 Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation Distributions from a BILL FREEDMAN qualified retirement Bill Freedman, an attorney with Dinsmore & Shohl, plan, IRA LLP, specializes in tax and or §403(b) estate planning, employee arrangement benefits and healthcare. He are subject to is a frequent speaker at federal income Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation’s Estate tax, as well as Planning Seminar Series most states’ for professional advisors. income taxes. Whoever receives the distribution—participant or beneficiary—must include the distribution for income tax purposes. In addition, on death, the value of the plan, IRA or §403(b) arrangement is also subject to federal estate tax and may also be subject to state estate tax. This quadruple taxation can consume a large portion of an IRA, plan or §403(b) arrangement. Instead of contributing to the IRS, why not channel those tax dollars to a favorite charity, such as Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation? Here is an example of a simple technique that will convert those taxes into a charitable contribution: • Take part of an IRA and place it in a separate IRA. • Designate the Foundation as beneficiary of the new IRA. • Result: the federal and state income and estate taxes that would have been paid will now go to the Foundation. If an IRA owner wishes to provide a spouse or other beneficiary with income from an IRA and then give what’s left to a charity, that too can be accomplished—and taxes can be minimized as well. A little planning can save taxes, assure that beneficiaries are provided for and benefit the Mid-Miami Healthcare Foundation.
