Accessible Powys A Guide to Accessible Accommodation
Introduction
people with easier access needs, including a
wheelchair user. All of the accommodation
featured will have at least one wheelchair
accessible entrance, one accessible bedroom
and a wet-room / level access shower.
Welcome to the first edition of the
Accessible Accommodation Guide for
the county of Powys.
Please note that whilst we have tried to ensure
that the accommodation will meet most
people’s access needs, we strongly advise you to
consult with each provider about your own
specific requirements.
This brochure was researched and produced by
Disabled Holiday Information (registered charity
no.1119972) in partnership with Powys County
Council.
It is also important to note that our researchers
assess for accessibility not quality, so for
accommodation inspection grading e.g. Star
rating, please refer to each providers own
information / website.
The guide is designed to give an insight into the
wide variety of accessible accommodation on
offer within the county. By combining it with
the comprehensive accessibility data located on
the Disabled Holiday Information website, we
hope it helps address the complex issues that
can face visitors when making decisions about
finding somewhere to stay that will meet their
individual access needs.
Full contact details, including websites, as well
as specific information of the accessibility of
each accommodation (plus photographs of the
accessible areas including the shower room) can
be found on the DHI website. Alternatively
readers can write to the DHI postal address for
further information about any properties of
particular interest.
Powys is an amazingly diverse county, which
offers visitors a wealth of dramatically beautiful
countryside and a wide variety of visitor
attractions to explore. It has an excellent
selection of accessible accommodation whether
you prefer a stylish hotel break, the comfort of a
bed & breakfast establishment or one of the
many varied self catering properties set in
peaceful and picturesque rural locations.
At the back of the guide we have also listed a
selection of the many attractions on offer within
the county, that our researchers have also visited
and assessed.
For ease of use, as with the sister guide for
accessible countryside sites and trails, we have
divided this guide into three main geographical
areas based on the historic counties of
Radnorshire, Montgomeryshire and
Brecknockshire that make up the present day
county of Powys.
As well as providing a memorable holiday
experience within the county, Powys is also an
excellent base from which to begin to explore
the rest of Wales and the neighbouring counties
of Shropshire and Herefordshire.
Every place included has been visited and
assessed for accessibility by one of the DHI
research teams. Each team is made up of

Accessible Powys A Guide to Accessible Accommodation
Montgomeryshire
The historic county of Montgomeryshire forms the northern part of
Powys. It is named after its county town, Montgomery, which in turn is
named after Roger de Montgomerie, the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and a
counsellor to William the Conqueror. The principal towns are
Machynlleth, Llanidloes, Montgomery, Newtown and Welshpool. This
area has forests and mountains to explore and a wide variety of visitor
attractions to suit all ages and interests from castles and reservoirs to
museums, a space centre and a heritage railway.
Self Catering
1) Bryn Tanat Hall is located in a peaceful rural location at
Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain but within easy reach of the main
road networks.
This period property, once part of the Aber Tanat Estate now offers
groups of up to 20 people a unique holiday experience. Although the
property is primarily let as self catering, by prior arrangement bespoke
holiday packages, which include fine dining and a range of activities
such as falconry can be arranged. Further details are available on the
owners’ website.
As well as the designated accessible bedroom on the ground floor,
nearby there is a second twin-bedded room accessed up a couple of
steps (which could be ideal for a carer/carers) and 8 more bedrooms
are located on the first and second floors.
This is a large, beautiful and atmospheric building that has been
skilfully refurbished to combine high specification whilst retaining its
period charm. The ground floor includes two formal dining rooms, one
of which is extremely spacious and suitable for parties, two lounges
and a snooker room.

2) Cledan Valley Tipis are located in a secluded valley on the edge of
the village of Carno but within easy reach of the market towns of
Llanidloes, Newtown and Machynlleth. The Tipis provide an unusual and
accessible form of camping, without the need to pitch your own tent.
In total there are 8 Tipis and 2 are located on fairly level sites adjacent
to the accessible toilet/shower cabin. One of these, named 'Hare' (a
family tipi sleeping up to 6 people), has an adapted opening to enable
easier wheelchair access.
Externally each tipi has its own barbecue and picnic table. Internally two
double futons and two singles are provided and guests bring their own
sleeping bags and/or bedding. For smaller groups (with prior notice) some
of the futons can be removed to provide more internal space if required.
Please note because of topography of the natural landscape, whilst the
surrounding countryside offers stunning views it is not wheelchair
accessible.
Telephone 01686 420409
3) Madog’s Wells lies approximately 10 miles west of Welshpool in
the hills above Llanfair Caereinion and has three comfortable and
accessible self catering cottages. Access to the entrance of each of the
bungalows is from adjacent hard surfaced car parking areas.
Wrens Nest Cottage (sleeping 3) has good wheelchair access around
the living/kitchen area, a double bedroom with a good sized en-suite
and a single bedroom.
Blackbird Cottage (sleeping 6) has spacious wheelchair access
around the kitchen/dining/lounge areas. There are two twin bedrooms
and a double bedroom. There is also a separate good sized shower
room and a separate toilet.
Swallow Cottage (sleeping 6) offers very spacious accommodation
and level access onto its own private verandah overlooking the 8 acres
of peaceful fields and woodland belonging to Madog Wells. The
cottage has a well equipped kitchen/dining/living area plus two twin
bedrooms and a double bedroom with an extra bed settee. The very
spacious en-suite has a level access shower and a bath. There is also a
4
Accessible Powys A Guide to Accessible Accommodation
separate toilet and wash basin.
The owners of Madog’s Wells have paid great attention to detail to
ensure good accessibility and a range of mobility aids are available on
site. Guests also have use of a communal games room.
Telephone 01938 810446
4) Owl Barn Retreat is situated in a peaceful and picturesque valley
within 5 minutes drive of the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and
is ideally located for exploring the beautiful county of Powys or
neighbouring Shropshire. Originally lovingly created on the site of a
former barn for a family member of the present owner, it has now
been revamped to provide a comfortable and stylish holiday property
with stunning views across the valley.
Access into the small entrance hall of the property is via a ramp. Once
inside, the kitchen/diner, lounge, double bedroom and shower room all
have level access and there is an additional twin room with sloping
eaves located up a flight of stairs, which could be suitable for family
members/carers.
It is important to note that some of the rooms within this property are
compact, access through the bedroom and shower room doors off the
hallway is tight for a self propelling manual chair user. For this reason
our researchers felt that Owl Barn Retreat would not be suitable for
non ambulant powered chair users or unaccompanied manual
wheelchair users.
Telephone 01691 780491
5) Quarry Cottage located in beautiful countryside at Highgate near
Newtown sleeps up to 8 people and has a good sized open plan living
area. It is one of 6 cottages situated on site, making it a good holiday
base for extended families or groups that have a member with easy
access needs.
The property benefits from a ground floor bedroom which has zip and
link twin beds and a spacious en-suite shower room.
these have en-suite shower rooms and the third has an en-suite
bathroom. There is also a separate downstairs toilet, however, this is
not wheelchair accessible.
Telephone 01686 623763
6) The Byre is one of two apartments at Le Gro Luxury Country Barns
which is situated in a peaceful countryside setting in the Welsh Marches
near Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain. Its location in Powys but near to the
border with Shropshire makes it an ideal base to explore both counties.
This 'high spec' and stylish property is all on one level with good internal
access to the lounge and kitchen areas. There is wheelchair access around
the bed in the double bedroom and to the main shower/bathroom. In
addition, with prior notice, furniture in the twin room can be rearranged
to create a super king bed and there is a fully sprung double sofa bed in
the lounge.
For extended families and larger groups with a family member/companion
with easy access needs, the upper floor apartment, accessed via an
external wooden staircase, is equally well appointed and sleeps up to 6
people. Both properties could be combined in a joint booking.
Telephone 01691 829143
7) Yr Hen Stablau is situated just outside Machynlleth on the Aberdyfi
road and was formerly a stable block in the early 19th century. Its
location makes it ideal for exploring the beautiful countryside in the
area and also the coast, which is only 8 miles away.
The property has been sympathetically converted to provide spacious
accommodation for up to 6 guests whilst retaining much of the period
charm of its former use.
The ground floor bedroom can be a double or twin and has an
adjoining wet-room. There is also a door out onto the rear patio with
views over the surrounding peaceful woodland. Upstairs there are two
well appointed twin bedrooms.
Telephone 01654 703428
In addition there are 3 double/twin rooms located upstairs. Two of

8) Edderton Hall Guest House is located at Ford approximately 2
miles from Welshpool and offers bed and breakfast accommodation
in 8 en-suite bedrooms. These include a comfortable and pleasant
ground floor accessible room with a king size divan bed that can be
converted to twin beds with prior notice.
The hotel has 3 designated accessible rooms with en-suite wet-rooms
with their own lift access from the spa. Rooms 45 and 47, located on
the first floor, are both spacious and have super king beds and their
own private verandah. Located on the floor above is the larger Lake
View room, which also has its own en-suite wet-room.
Guests are also able to enjoy the use of two large lounges both with
lake views, an attractive dining room and an outside patio area.
The room has a door leading out to a small private patio and
ramped access to the breakfast/dining room. Evening meals can also
be served by prior arrangement.
NB The pool in the spa does not have a hoist and guests would need
to consult with the hotel over their own specific needs for accessibility
with regards to accessing the treatments/facilities available.
In addition, guests have use of an attractive lounge on the ground floor
and a further large patio area at the front of the Hall that has magnificient
views across the surrounding countryside towards Powis Castle.

Radnorshire
9) Lane Farm is situated at Criggion on the Wales/Shropshire border
and offers guests comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation on a
working farm set in lovely countryside. It is located within easy reach of
the main road networks and would make an ideal base for exploring
nearby Welshpool and further afield.
The historic county of Radnorshire forms the central section of Powys.
Although the Assizes sat at Presteigne, New Radnor was originally
considered the county town. Administrative functions were eventually
transferred to Llandrindod Wells, which still retains this role within
present day Powys. The principal towns are Knighton, Llandrindod
Wells, Presteigne and Rhayader. There is plenty on offer in this area for
visitors to experience and enjoy, including the spectacular scenery of
the Elan Valley, the aerial ballet of red kites feeding and a remarkable
selection of unusual and unique heritage attractions.
There is an attractive ground floor twin room with en-suite wheel-in
shower and toilet. Breakfast is served in the farmhouse dining room.
Access to the entrance of the property is across a level concreted yard
from the car parking area and via a shallow step.
Due to the historic nature of the farm building, internal access is limited
and may not suit some powered wheelchairs, therefore we recommend
discussing dimensions etc, with the owners prior to booking.

10) Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and Spa is located at Llanwddyn deep
within the peaceful forests and mountains of north west Powys. Its
splendid setting on a hillside affords guests magnificent views over the
Victorian Reservoir with its 'fairy tale' tower.

11) The Meeting House located at Penybont near Llandrindod Wells
is a former drover’s house and listed building. It forms part of the
Thomas-Shop, a unique and on-going restoration project of a village
shop and its surrounding outbuildings. The property dates back to the
16th century and still retains all the atmosphere of its long history
alongside a main droving route from Wales to the markets in London.
This is basically a 'one up/one down' building, however the owners
have installed an accessible wet-room off the living area (where there is
8
Accessible Powys A Guide to Accessible Accommodation
a double bed settee) enabling some visitors with easier access needs to
experience staying in such a quirky and evocative period building. The
galleried room upstairs can sleep up to 6 people.
heritage. Its central position means it is within easy walking/wheeling
distance of the town’s shops and attractions and also makes it a
great base to explore the beautiful countryside in the heart of Wales.
NB Access outside the building is across an original uneven shallow
cobbled area, which might require some assistance to negotiate. Our
researchers felt this property would not be suitable for most
unaccompanied wheelchair users.
Room 124 on the first floor and room 224 on the second floor are
the designated accessible rooms and both have an identical layout.
Telephone 01597 851951
B&B
12) Gaer Farm is located in a tranquil picturesque valley at Hundred
House, approximately 8 miles from Llandrindod Wells. The light and airy
accessible room is large enough to contain a double and two single
beds, a table and four chairs and two 'fireside' style armchairs.
Its peaceful setting could make it an ideal place to relax and unwind for
families with easy access needs or individuals who are accompanied by
a carer/carers.
Entrance into the hotel from the car park is through automatic
outward opening doors and a good sized lift up to the reception
area. There is good accessibility around the public areas including the
lounges, restaurant and conference suites.
Access to the spa and pool complex is via several steps or a
wheelchair lift. The pool has a hoist and there is an accessible
changing room with level access shower and toilet.
Telephone 01587 823700
14) The Knighton Hotel is a 16 bedroomed hotel situated within the
heart of the historic town of Knighton. Its central location in the
borderland of the Wales/England Marches makes it an ideal base to
explore the unspoilt and varied landscape of this unique area.
The room has an additional kitchenette with a microwave, fridge and a
double 'plug in' electric hotplate, where meals can be prepared if guests
wish to do so.
The hotel has one designated accessible bedroom with an en-suite
wet-room located on the first floor. This has a double and single bed
plus a small sofa bed and could be especially suitable for families with
easy access needs or guests accompanied by their own carer/carers.
There is also an adjacent detached cottage sleeping up to six people on
site (not wheelchair accessible), which could make this an ideal holiday
location for extended families or small groups.
There are also several other bedrooms with en-suite wet-rooms, which
might suit guests with limited walking ability.

Hotel
13) The Metropole Hotel is located in Llandrindod Wells and has
been owned and run by members of the same family since the end
of the 19th century when the existing hotel on the site was rebuilt.
This privately run hotel skilfully combines period charm with
contemporary decor and prides itself on being able to offer a more
personal service. The management are willing to discuss and try to
meet guests’ individual access requirements with sufficient prior
consultation.
Telephone 01547 520530

leisure amenities still retains the charm and ambience of its Victorian

16 & 22) Carno Bach is one of several adjoining, converted period
buildings on Carno Farm situated in beautiful countryside at Libanus
near Brecon within the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Brecknockshire
Brecknockshire forms the southern part of Powys. Its main towns are
Brecon, Builth Wells, Crickhowell, Hay-on-Wye, Llanwrtyd Wells,
Talgarth and Ystradgynlais. The area contains some of the most rugged
and remote landscape within Wales, including a large section of the
Brecon Beacons National Park, the Black Mountains and Mynydd
Epynt. With dramatic and breathtaking views, a great selection of
accessible trails and a wealth of historic towns to explore, this area
makes a great holiday destination whether visiting for the first time or
making a return trip.
Access into the property is via a small portable wooden ramp and over
a threshold. There is a ground floor wet-room accessed from the
lounge. Furniture can be rearranged and a single bed can be placed to
provide for wheelchair users and other guests who cannot use the
stairs to get up to the two main bedrooms.
This property is adjoining a second larger cottage, Ty Carno, and there
is an internal connecting door between the two (one high step). This
second cottage can also be accessed externally using the ramp and has
an electrically adjustable single bed in the lounge and a ground floor
bathroom with bath hoist. The two cottages can be let as one unit
creating flexible accommodation for up to 8 adults and 2 children.
Self Catering
15 & 21) Beech Tree and Poplar Tree Eco Lodges are located at
Crai within easy reach of Brecon and the attractions of the National
Park but would also make an ideal base for exploring further afield in
Wales. The owners of these stylish 'high spec' properties have given a
great deal of consideration to the needs of all their guests, including
those with easy access needs.
Telephone 01874 625630
17) Cui Hen Beudy is an attractive period cottage set within
beautiful countryside at Talybont-on-Usk and is ideally located for
exploring the nearby historic town of Brecon, the Brecon Beacons
National Park and further afield in Wales.
Beech Tree Lodge sleeps up to 9 people with one spacious twin/double
bedroom and en-suite wet-room on the ground floor. There is easy
access throughout the whole of the ground floor and via double
opening doors on to the rear patio area, which has open views of the
surrounding countryside.
The two bedroomed property is managed by Brecon Holiday
Cottages and has been skilfully converted by the owners to create a
comfortable holiday home, whilst retaining much of the charm and
character of its former role as an agricultural building. It has level
access throughout and benefits from both a wet-room with level
access shower and a separate bathroom. Guests are also able to relax
and enjoy the tranquillity of the area within the secluded rear garden
with its outside eating area.
The adjoining Poplar Tree Lodge is equally well appointed and also has
a ground floor twin bedroom with en-suite wet-room and sleeps up to
12 people. The properties share joint access to a covered hot tub in the
grounds.
For visitors who enjoy countryside trails, there is a level access trail with
stunning views at Talybont-on-Usk Reservoir only 5 minutes drive away,
a short accessible section of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at
Talybont and a longer accessible section starting from the Canal Basin
in Brecon. These trails are featured in the Accessible Powys Trails Guide.
A joint booking of the two properties would make this flexible
accommodation suitable for groups of up to 21 people, including 4
members needing level access.

the grounds of Pendarren House Outdoor Education Centre, a large
country house situated near Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons
National Park. The property has been specifically converted for group

There are 5 en-suite bedrooms (3 bunk rooms and 2 twin rooms) and
1 of the twin rooms is 'L' shaped with good internal wheelchair access
and a fully adapted en-suite wet-room. The communal living area has
good accessibility and there is an accessible ramp down to a patio area
with wonderful views.
When the centre is staffed, by prior arrangement visitors at the Firs are
also able to use the Outdoor Education Centre. Facilities include an
unheated swimming pool, which has a hoist, a wheelchair accessible
abseiling route, and depending on an individual’s ability, they may take
part in other activities such as canoeing and orienteering.
NB A hoist and various pieces of mobility equipment are available on

that has been skilfully converted to create comfortable holiday
accommodation, whilst retaining all the history, charm and ambience
of the barn's original purpose. Set in peaceful secluded countryside
but still within easy reach of Brecon and the National Park's main
attractions, it offers a great place to unwind and is an ideal base to
explore the area.
In addition to the large open plan living area there are 2 bedrooms (1
double and 1 twin) and a separate, spacious wet-room on the ground
floor. On the upper floor there are 2 further bedrooms, one of which
has 4 singles (can be twinned) and an additional twin bedroom.
For extended families, if required, the property can be combined with
two other cottages on the farm to sleep up to 20 people. Please note

24) Wye Cottage is situated in a pretty courtyard setting at Penrheol

created with easy access in mind and is level throughout with good
internal access along the light airy corridor and the open plan living
area. Each bedroom has a wet-room and there are excellent elevated
views over the surrounding countryside.
The present owners have created wheelchair access around the side of
the property to the patio, which is one of this accommodation’s most
inviting features, as it has stunning open views, a large table and chairs
and a hot tub.
The adjoining one bed-roomed Irfon Cottage is all on one level and
whilst not specifically designed for wheelchair access like Wye Cottage,

wheelchair users with some ambulant ability.
Step free access to the main hotel is via a long removable ramp and
wheelchair users will require assistance to enter. Alternatively breakfast
can be served in the conservatory, which has easier access and
beautiful views. The former grounds of the Castle are now a country
