WELCOME TO POLAND!
Dear Participants and Team Leaders,
We are more than happy to welcome the brightest young
geographers from all over the world to Poland. We hope
all of you will have a tremendous time in the historical
city of Kraków and the Małopolska region. We wish all
the participants success, gathering valuable experiences
and making friendships that should last for years.
Best regards and good luck,
Tomasz Sawicki

THE 11TH INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OLYMPIAD
The International Geography Olympiad returns to Poland
after 10 years.
The International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) is an annual
competition for the best 16 to 19 year old geography students from
all over the world. Students chosen to represent their countries are
the very best, chosen from thousands of students who participate
enthusiastically in their own National Geography Olympiads.
The Olympiad is held under the auspices of the International
Geographical Union (IGU) and managed by the IGU Olympiad Task
Force.
The iGeo 2014 is being held in Kraków, organized cooperatively by
the Polish Geographical Society and the Pedagogical University of
Cracow. We are proud to host you again in our country, 10 years
after the 5th International Geography Olympiad was held in Gdynia!

CULTURAL FUNCTION AND POSTER PRESENTATION
CULTURAL FUNCTION
POSTER PRESENTATION
The cultural function will be held on Friday, 15th August
in the evening. The aim is to share knowledge about the
diversity of the cultural heritage of participants from all
over the world. That is why each team is invited to give
a 90-second presentation entitled The unique symbol of
my country/region.
Posters that the participants have made will be displayed
in the Hostel Za Kolumnami common areas on Saturday
evening. Each poster should illustrate an issue from the
team’s home country related to the topic: Challenges of
Contemporary Urban Areas.
Apart from learning about your country we would like
to show you a little of ours. To do so, we have planned
a performance by a regional band, followed by learning
a Polish traditional dance and songs! We hope you will
find it interesting. And what is culture without cuisine –
we would like you to try some regional food from Poland.
20
You will have the opportunity to present your posters
the same way as the academics do! Although the poster
presentation is not counted as part of a student’s final
score in the iGeo, a prize is planned for the team whose
poster is voted the best. Moreover, the best posters will
be displayed at the IGU Regional Conference venue
during the Conference.

EXCURSIONS
Excursion 1: Kraków (visit to old market square,
underground city and Mariacki Church)
13 August 2014
Medieval Kraków was an important urban center, situated
at the intersection of several trade routes. MAIN SQUARE,
the largest market square in medieval Europe, enabled
merchants to free trade, by displaying their goods on
stalls. Sukiennice Cloth Hall still remains from these times.
Besides them, the most important monuments in the
town square are: the Town Hall Tower, St. Mary’s Church
and St. Wojciech Church. Almost all buildings around
the market are also historic, and possession of them was
a sign of wealth and prestige. The Main Square was the
administrative, economic and cultural center of Kraków,
and witnessed important events in Polish history, such as
the promise of fealty to the Polish King Zygmunt I by the
Duke of Prussia Albrecht Hohenzollern in 1525, and the
Kościuszko insurrection.
stone paths with grooves worn by the wheels of wagons
transporting goods, the oldest brick constructions of
trading buildings, ornaments, coins, and many other
objects lost or left here on purpose by those visiting this
place ages ago.
ST. MARY’S CHURCH is a gothic church, built from the
thirteenth through the next two centuries. It is one of the
most valuable monuments of Poland. The interior of the
church was decorated by the most famous Polish painters.
The pride of the church is a magnificent altar made by Wit
Stwosz, showing St. Mary and the Apostles. The altar is
made of over 1,000-year-old oak wood.
Underneath Kraków’s Main Square is a unique museum,
the result of archaeological works in the eastern part of
Main Square. It uncovered 1000 years of the history of this
place. It preserves construction and architecture relics,

Excursion 2: Pieniny Mountains
14 August 2014
The excursion is starting early in the morning and ending
late in the evening. Comfortable, tourist clothing, raincoat,
cap, sunscreen, water – min. 1 litre – and a camera are
recommended! Taking your passport/national ID with you
is compulsory!
The excursion will include RAFTING ON TRADITIONAL
WOODEN RAFTS through the wonderful Dunajec Gorge
in the Pieniny National Park. This is a unique tourist
attraction lasting about 2.5 hours (18 km on the river):
beautiful nature – endemic fauna and flora, exceptional
views, an unusual experience can be expected!
Traditional rafting developed due to the location of
the mountain villages on Dunajec River, which were
established about a thousand years ago in the heart of
the pristine Carpathian woods. The river was often the
only means of transport and it was also the source of
food and fishing territory. The first pioneers used a large
canoe. The beginning of tourist rafting can be traced back
to the mid-1800s, when the guests from the Dunajec
Castle were taken on rafts down to Cerveny Klastor and
from there bathers were taken down to Szczawnica spa
town. At the turn of the 20th century, rafting became
an international phenomenon. The highest number of
tourists in one season has reached 285 000. Currently, the
Polish Association of Pieniny Raftsmen on Dunajec River
has 482 registered members, who have a total of about
250 rafts, On April 1st 2014, the 183rd season of rafting
commenced on Dunajec River.
Another attraction is a CYCLING TRIP on “Pieniny Road” –
about one hour easy cycling along the Dunajec River
bank in the Pieniny National Park (PNP). The National Park
in Pieniny and the Slovakian Nature Reserve in PIENINY
were founded in 1932, and so together were the first in
Europe and second in the world (after USA-Canada) crossborder Nature Park. PNP is visited by 750 000 visitors a
year. The cycling path crosses the Polish-Slovakian border.
Both Poland and Slovakia are part of the Schengen Area,
which means there is no border control between them
and people can travel freely between these countries.
25
Visiting Pieniny could not be complete without VISITING
SZCZAWNICA HEALTH RESORT (Szczawnica – “The Queen
of Polish waters”). Szczawnica resort is located in the
immediate vicinity of the Pieniny National Park Grajcarek
Valley. It is surrounded by mountain slopes covered by
coniferous and larch forests on all sides. On both sides
of the mountain gorge there are sanatoriums, holiday
houses and guesthouses. Szczawnica is a perfect base
for hiking trips in Pieniny. The name of the town comes
from the acidic waters, known to highlanders as sorrels
(“szczaw”). The settlement was first mentioned in 1413,
and for over 200 years it has been considered a resort.
After WWII, new sanatoriums for workers in specific fields
and a modern Institute of Natural Medicine were built.
Szczawnica received city rights on July 18th 1962.
26

The excursion will continue with an OUTDOOR TRADITIONAL DINNER ”Pienińskie Posiady” with Polish food
(roast lamb, mixed dumplings) and highlanders’ music
played by local, mountain band musicians. It will take
place on the Dunajec River bank among natural scenery.
Duration about 2 hrs.
Excursion 3: Auschwitz
16 August 2014
Before the trip everyone should reconsider taking part in this
trip, because the exhibitions and exploration of camps where
mass extermination took place, generally impact on everyone’s
feelings and mood. The trip will include visiting the permanent
exhibitions and buildings at the Auschwitz I – Main Camp and
the most important original camp buildings at Auschwitz II –
Birkenau: prisoner barracks, the unloading platform (ramp),
and the ruins of the gas chamber and crematoria.

All over the world, Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror
and genocide. It was established by Germans in 1940, in the
suburbs of Oświęcim, a Polish city annexed to the Third Reich
by the German National-Socialists Government (the Nazis).
Its name was changed to Auschwitz, which also became the
name of the Concentration Camp “Auschwitz”. The direct
reason for the establishment of the camp was the fact that
mass arrests of Poles were increasing after the fall of Poland in
1939, beyond the capacity of existing “local” prisons. Initially,
Auschwitz was to be one more concentration camp of the
type that the Nazis had been setting up since the early 1930s.
It functioned in this role throughout its existence, even when,
at the beginning of 1942, it also became the largest of the
death camps, mainly for Poles, Jews and other nationals of
occupied Europe.
Excursion 4: Kraków and surroundings
17 August 2014
The excursion will consist of sightseeing in Kraków and
the historical WIeliczka Salt Mine. In Kraków we will see
the Old Town and antique Jewish quarter – Kazimierz
district.
The MAIN SQUARE is the center of Kraków - the old capital
of Poland. It is located on the main traffic route of the
medieval city, leading from St. Florian’s Gate to Wawel
Castle. It’s a square with a side 200 m long, occupying
an area of 4 hectares. It has a regular shape, with some
deviations – a result of an earlier settlement when St.
Mary’s Church and the wide road leading to Wawel Hill
(today: Grodzka Street) had already been built.
WAWEL CASTLE is a royal residence, from the eleventh
century. From then, over the centuries, it was the site of
the coronations and the seat of Polish kings. Originally
built in the Romanesque style, in the following centuries it
was repeatedly expanded. Today it’s a two-storey building

From the Main Square, the heart of the Old Town, you
head to the Royal Way. Via Grodzka Street going to the
south, and passing the historic St. Peter and Paul Church,
you will get to Wawel Castle.
KAZIMIERZ was a medieval city, located according to
Magdeburg law in the early thirteenth century. Apart from
Poles, from the fifteenth century, a significant proportion
of the inhabitants of Kazimierz were Jews. The city became
an important center of Jewish culture in Poland. Wealthy
Jewish merchants and bankers successfully conducted their
economic activities, and built numerous synagogues, such as
the old synagogue. Built in the fourteenth century in GothicRomanesque style, it is one of the oldest synagogues in
Poland and one of the most valuable monuments of Jewish
architecture in Europe. Currently it’s a museum of Jewish
history and culture. Another unique site is the Old Jewish
Cemetery (Remuh) - one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in
Europe, founded in the sixteenth century.
The Nazi occupation during World War II caused a significant
depopulation of this part of town. Jews were imprisoned in the
ghetto, forced to work in a nearby labor camp “Plaszow”, and
finally many of them died in the death camps. Currently Jewish

with four wings, a courtyard and five towers. Architecturally,
it is a mix of styles: Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist. Today
the castle is open to visitors who can admire: royal chambers,
treasury, armory and royal gardens.
culture is being reborn in Kazimierz. The annual Jewish
Culture Festival attracts more and more tourists. Kazimierz
is also a fashionable meeting place in Krakow with a number
of pubs. Tourists are attracted by synagogues, art galleries,
museums and theaters. More and more restaurants are
being created, serving traditional food. In one of them the
whole group will meet for lunch.
Another place we will see is the ‘WIELICZKA’ SALT MINE.
The oldest mining enterprise in the world, it has been
operating continuously since its opening in the 2nd half
of the 13th century up to the present day. Miners were
exploiting a rich deposit of salt: approx. 10 kilometers
long, 0,5 to 1,5 kilometers wide, and 0,5 kilometer thick.
During over 700 years of its history, miners excavated
over 7,5 million cubic meters of rock salt, which led
to the creation of 2040 chambers connected by over
245 kilometers of corridors and located over 9 levels.
The Tourist Route is composed of chambers and corridors,
saline and wooden chapels, and saline lakes. A walk along
30
the route resembles not only an expedition into the
depths of the Earth, but also a trip into the past. Mining
machines, tools and traces of the ancient miners’ labor
form a thrilling adventure tale about the place and the
people who created them during the past centuries.
More sacred sites, amongst them the amazing Chapel of
St. Kinga, form a unique – as it is the only one in Europe –
underground pilgrim’s route “God Bless” (Szczęść Boże).
The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine is one of the most valuable
monuments of material and spiritual culture in Poland.
Each year it is visited by more than one million tourists
from all over the world. It is also a world class monument,
featuring twelve objects on the UNESCO’s World Cultural
and Natural Heritage List.
