The GR-3 has come and gone. Attendance was down a little this year, probably due to the weather forecast for Saturday that shouted about rain. Well, we had a little, but it did not spoil the fun. The rides went out as planned and folks seemed to be having a good time. The club was there in force for the set-up on Thursday. I got there around noon thirty. Rob Himmelman was already setting up the t-shirt tent and he had rolled out his barn find from two GR-3s ago......the original proof of concept BMW R1200 Airhead......powered by a 4 cylinder late 50's VW engine. Well, I guess that this was not a factory prototype, but it sure sounded impressive when he started it up on the first kick. It featured custom farm welding on the bell housing and automatic boot waterproofing courtesy of the oil leaking out of the heads. Looked like a lot of fun to ride. I was at the rally on 4 wheels instead of two due to some surprise body maintenance that I had to take care of. It cropped up on Wednesday a week before the rally. There is nothing like hospital food to motivate you into getting well and getting the @#$%! out of there. I did bring two motorcycles to work on while at the rally since I knew that I would not be riding much for a while. With the help of many rally goers, especially Rob H and Randy B, I got my R60/5 up and running. The Honda XL125S was not as lucky, needing a pile of parts and much more TLC than could be mustered at the rally. We had motorcycles movies in the shelter on both Friday and Saturday night, lots of good food throughout the rally provided by our friends from Soldiers Grove, a great selection of door prizes, two kegs of beer on Friday that went really fast, camaraderie around the campfires and some really great riding. What a wonderful way to start out the rally season. Notes from New Albin While loitering in New Albin, IA (while the GR3G2R2 continued on without me), Al Wuennecke (owner of the City Meat Market) was phenomenally helpful to me in obtaining a ride back to Soldier’s Grove. His smokehouse operations there are outstanding and may have some of the best beef and pork jerky I have ever tasted. While I couldn’t sample everything he had in the deli case, most of it made me salivate. Should you find yourself in the vicinity of New Albin on highway 26, it would be very worthwhile to stop and check it out. Derek. Secretary’s Report by Roland Thompson Madison BMW Club Meeting Minutes—May 1, 2011 The May meeting was called to order by Vice President Sam Hokin at 10:00 AM. There were several guests, and they were given the opportunity to introduce themselves. Jim Harms covered the last minute details for the GR3 coming up May 20-22. We still need volunteers for registration, coffee detail and cleanup so don’t be shy about coming forward. We will have an overflow tent this year in case the numbers for the Saturday banquet exceed the pavilion’s capacity, especially if it rains. Mike Shannon and Sam Garst are hosting a “welcome keg” on Friday afternoon for thirsty rally arrivals. The beer choice this year is Bitburger. There will be a led touring and GS ride again this year. Its also important to note that the Old Oak Inn bar will be open Friday night. The Holiday Shores Motel in McGregor IA is once again sponsoring a free night’s stay drawing among pre-registrants. They also offered a riverside barbecue if we could get enough people for a group ride over there in June or July. We need someone to organize that. The Hiawatha Rally in MN is June 3-5. Preregistration for that ends May 15th. The annual Club Picnic is August 14th at Brigham County Park. Don’t forget the June 5 meeting is at the Dry Bean Saloon at 9:30 AM. Breakfast follows the meeting. Dave Maly won the 50/50 and Bert Hefty won the free breakfast. Meeting adjourned at about 10:30 so we could go to the Slimy Crud run. Roland Thompson Secretary Bikes for Sale I recently splurged on a 2004 K1200GT. Hopefully you will get a chance to see it at out next breakfast at The Dry Bean. I also own two other bikes. One or both will be going to a new home this summer. I just don’t want to be doing maintenance on three bikes. I’m about to head out the door for Nashville and Memphis. I’ll be back on Monday but thought I’d throw this out to the club in case anyone wants first look at either of these bikes before I advertise them in early June. Both bikes have been dealer maintained at specified intervals and both have had recent visits to Mischler’s. 1977 R100/7 Asking $1,900 Owned since 1994 I’ve ridden this bike to Alaska twice. The last time was 2005. Black – repainted a few years ago but the tank was replaced with used which I resealed before installing last year. 113K miles New rings and exhaust valves around 85K Transmission rebuild around 85K Russell Day Long Saddle, bar backs, BMW hard bags, rear rack, good shocks, Luftmeister rain front fender + stock fender, BMW tank bag, mustang tank bra, mid sized handlebar windscreen and RAM mount for accessories. I’m probably forgetting something but you get the picture. It is well maintained, running well and has some nice additions. I’ve been using this bike mostly for camping trips in recent years. 1994 K75S Asking $3,900 Owned since 2006 I’ve toured with this bike as well as had some lovely day runs. My most memorable trip was through Glacier National Park then over the Bear Tooth Highway to Yellowstone and the Tetons. I love this bike but I think the GT offers a close ride and will end up getting most of my attention. Light yellow 57K miles Bar backs, Corbin low seat and back rest with color matched piping to the bike, BMW K75 tank bag with color matched piping, Givi monokey rear rack, BMW hard bags (newer than the bike), Aeroflow windshield and RAM accessory mounts. Let me know if you would like to see or ride either of these bikes. Edwin Burington 608-772-1933 For Sale: 1975 BMW R90/S This is an historic motorcycle. BMW campaigned two Daytona Orange R90/S motorcycles in the AMA Superbike class in 1974, winning the title. Practically every history written about BMW (both the motorcycles as well as the company) has a photo of the Daytona Orange R90/S. This bike is in excellent original condition. It has not been modified as many have to include dual spark plugs and electronic ignition. It has 30k miles and has been owned by the current owners for the past 22 years. It does have hard bags and engine guards. Asking price: $8,000. Bob & Cheryl: 608/455-1617 >From Roland: A guy I’ve been talking to about buying my 1200ST has a 78 BMW R100S for sale in Lake Mills, WI. 23,000 miles, $6900. Pics are on Craigslist ad. Looks nice, but maybe overpriced.
