By Miguel Petchkovsky, Curator of the Guerilla Video
The Video Guerrilla concept - conceived by artist, Visualfarm VJ and
founder Alexis Anastasiou, expresses a clear need for a contemporary
discourse when setting in motion relational processes whose individual
and collective experiences allude to an urban imaginary, disclosing an
artificial temporality, artistically represented and reproduced by new
technologies for projecting video images.
This project’s conceptual framework amounts to an open platform open
to contemporary creativity expressed in social activity taking place at
public spaces. There multi-shaped creative technological practices
interface with multiple formats and a broad urban audience, therewith
generating innovative flows of information, communication, training,
production, possibility and continuity.
Video Guerrilla therefore becomes a pragmatic reflection centered
in representative expressions of social and public spaces further to
contemporary artistic practices in new media, articulated with the
most recent languages and narratives of monumental image projection
technologies. It therefore catalyses and inspires a transversal flow of
ideas tangent to everyday experience and individual creativity, in spite of
its being positioned in a collective context.
In another instance, Video Guerrilla displays a creative, inclusive, urban,
sustainable attitude, conversely to the usual inner spaces used in artistic
practices, but instead referring to the city as an independent organism
in constant architectural change, further to social models which are
sometimes imperceptible to the common man.
Seen in these terms, the creative experience of Video Guerrilla belongs
to everyone, provided they act as renewing social agents, inspirers of this
modern artistic-technological context.

Augusta Street
Augusta Street
The choice of “Rua Augusta” to stage Video
Guerrilla was deliberate since this has for a
long time been an icon of the city of Sao Paulo.
The street had its heyday as an economic
showcase in the 50´s and 60´s. In the 70s, 80s and
90s it underwent social decay, turning into a
location that housed prostitution and drug
sales. The street is currently a center of art
and urban culture, having been socially and
economically revitalized.

Interaction
Video Guerrilla 2011 featured two special interaction
areas created by the Visualfarm team. Several
structures were set up where large numbers of people
were permitted to interact and directly play around
with those structures.
The People Magnifier
The People Magnifier
The “people magnifier” was our most
successful structure. With its simple
format, this structure directly touches
ordinary citizens’ self-esteem , playing
with the perception they have of their own
image, turning them into real everyday
“actresses and actors”, giving them the
power and opportunity to become Giants
for a moment.

Art
Video Guerrilla is a project designed and performed by Visualfarm
which invests in projects that promote an encounter between ethics
and aesthetics, propped on socio-economic responsibility and
artistic practices. Visualfarm is a Brazilian producer, a pioneer in the
development of new projective languages. It is geared towards creating
customized solutions with the promoting of interaction among art,
culture and technology for its mission.
Formed by a group of artists, designers, VJs, animators and projection
engineers that have been working for years in Brazil, Visualfarm was
the first Brazilian producer to work using techniques such as Mapped
Projection or 3DMapping, and Virtual Graffiti. Its founder, Alexis
Anastasiou, is considered the first Brazilian VJ. In its eight years of
existence, the company has worked throughout Brazil, Europe, Latin
America and the USA.
In May 2011, Visualfarm was awarded “most innovative use of audiovisual
technology for external events” in the traditional American Prize
InfoComm/LSA, for “The World’s Biggest Hug” campaign, promoted by
The National Council of SESI, This campaign received silver medals in the
New York Festival and Clio Awards.
