The movies in competition, the premieres and the documentaries portray heroes who often seem weary and demotivated, yet who are still curious to understand what they are going through, and in the course of their trials, seek to confront themselves. That is the narrative theme of a great many of the fiction films in this year’s line-up. In search of identity, the characters in BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, BLUE JASMINE, WHITE HOUSE DOWN, RUSH or JOE all bear out this idea. The competition is also shot through with a quest for reference points, probing the roots of rural America to find meaning in existence, and demonstrating that having one’s feet in the soil can be as good as therapy. The theme of heroes revealed in the selection could have been the inspiration behind the choice of Vincent Lindon as president of the jury, a genuine herald of this competition. But that wasn’t the case. It was, in fact, the result of a shared wish on the part of the Festival’s organizers to have him as president for the past three years, and Vincent’s desire to share with us his ardent passion for American cinema. It is the first time that an actor has headed the jury, and similarly, the first time an actress – Valérie Donzelli – will preside over the Cartier Révélation jury. We continue to take an interest in the wider world of the moving image, through the documentary section and Deauville Season 4, the former affirming the longevity of the genre and its high standards, the latter affirming the future of original writing and the influence it can have on cinema. The Festival is always keen to encourage debate through meaningful dialog and fruitful exchanges, and this will be on offer in abundance through the Film Corner, the masterclasses, the literary award, the Prix Michel d’Ornano, the Nuits Américaines, and much more. As we like to say, cinema is always better when we talk about it. The many contemporary films on show should not let us forget the history of this art and those who forged it. We will pay tribute to them in the shape of a producer without whom the movies would not be what they are today, two actors and an actress who have all played modern-day heroes, and for the first time this year, Deauville Legend will provide the occasion to honor a personality who has visited Deauville, or who has made an outstanding contribution to cinema before they passed into celluloid legend. 3 THE JURY VINCENT LINDON Actor, screenwriter & director Jury President © Bruno Lévy SELECTED FILMOGRAPHY Actor 2013 2012 2012 2011 2010 2010 2010 2008 2008 2007 2006 2006 2005 2005 2005 2004 2003 2001 2001 MEA CULPA by Fred Cavayé AUGUSTINE by Alice Winocour BASTARDS by Claire Denis A FEW HOURS OF SPRING by Stéphane Brizé ALL OUR DESIRES by Philippe Lioret MOON CHILD by Delphine Gleize PATER by Alain Cavalier WELCOME de Philippe Lioret MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON by Stéphane Brizé ANYTHING FOR HER by Fred Cavaye COULD THIS BE LOVE? by Pierre Jolivet THOSE WHO REMAIN by Anne Le Ny CHARLIE SAYS by Nicole Garcia LA MOUSTACHE by Emmanuel Carrère L’AVION by Cédric Kahn LA CONFIANCE RÈGNE by Etienne Chatiliez THE COST OF LIVING by Philippe Le Guay FRIDAY NIGHT by Claire Denis THE WARRIOR’S BROTHER by Pierre Jolivet 4 2001 2001 1999 1998 1998 1997 1997 1996 1995 1995 1995 1993 1992 1991 1990 1990 1989 1989 1988 1987 1986 1985 1985 1984 1984 1984 1983 DAY OFF by Pierre Jolivet CHAOS by Coline Serreau KEEP IT QUIET by Benoît Jacquot MY LITTLE BUSINESS by Pierre Jolivet THE SCHOOL OF FLESH by Benoît Jacquot SEVENTH HEAVEN by Benoît Jacquot PAPARAZZI by Alain Berberian FRED by Pierre Jolivet LES VICTIMES by Patrick Grandperret LA BELLE VERTE by Coline Serreau VITE STROZZATE by Ricky Tognazzi LA CRISE by Coline Serreau TOUT ÇA POUR ÇA by Claude Lelouch LA BELLE HISTOIRE by Claude Lelouch NETCHAIEV EST DE RETOUR by Jacques Deray GASPARD AND ROBINSON by Tony Gatlif C’EST LA VIE by Diane Kurys THERE WERE DAYS... Danny Kaye Actor ©DR Danny Kaye was born David Daniel Kaminsky on January 18, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. (His actual year of birth was 1911, but the birthday he celebrated was 1913). The son of an immigrant Russian tailor, his parents spoke Yiddish and Russian at home and he started “entertaining” when he was about five, singing and dancing at three-day Jewish weddings. He was a high school dropout who specialized in pole vaulting and playing hookey. His official debut in show business began as a “tummeler” at summer resorts in the Catskill Mountains. “Tummeling” meant clowning around anywhere, at all hours, for the entertainment of the guests. Further afield, he toured the Far East in 1934 and since most audiences didn’t speak English, he developed the signature “Danny Kaye” style of artful communication, a pantomime of body language and gymnastic face that could express every emotion. 1939 was a year that would change his life. At an audition in a Broadway loft, he met Sylvia Fine. They eloped in 1940. She was an integral and intimate part of Danny Kaye’s stardom. A gifted pianist, lyricist and composer, she wrote 67 most of his material for nightclubs, stage and film, and worked throughout his career, often behind the scenes, as editor and producer. Her credits include two Oscar nominations for best song and in 1979, she won a Peabody for the first of three specials she produced, created, wrote, and hosted on PBS, Musical Comedy Tonight. As president of the Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine Kaye Foundation, their daughter, Dena, is dedicated to continuing her father’s legacy of helping people around the world. Danny Kaye first caught the world’s attention in 1941 with a small role in Moss Hart’s Broadway show, Lady in the Dark. From this platform, Kaye jumped to star status in his next Broadway appearance, Cole Porter’s Let’s Face It. In 1943, he made a longer jump to Hollywood, under contract to Samuel Goldwyn. In his first starring role, he appeared the year after in Elliott Nugent’s UP IN ARMS, opposite Dinah Shore. Danny Kaye became an international star with his SRO performances at The London Palladium. The early 50s was a fertile time for Danny Kaye, with such definitive films as Walter Lang’s ON THE RIVIERA (1951), Charles Vidor’s HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1952), Melvin Frank & Norman Panama’s KNOCK ON WOOD (1954) and his sold-out, one-man shows in New York. In 1952 he hosted the 24th Academy Awards. Kaye made the timeless film, Michael Curtiz’s WHITE CHRISTMAS, with Bing Crosby in 1954, a year that opened a new chapter in his life when he became UNICEF’s first Goodwill Ambassador. In 1955 he received an honorary Oscar, relating to the documentary, ASSIGNMENT CHILDREN, about his work around the world with UNICEF. In 1956, he was privileged to star in one of legendary Edward R. Murrow’s SEE IT NOW SPECIALS. THE SECRET LIFE OF DANNY KAYE won a Peabody Award and focused largely on his role for UNICEF. “Children are the world’s most valuable natural resource,” Kaye said. “All you have to do is hold out a hand and embrace a child and you will have a lifelong ally.” In the late 50s, before joining the world of television, he made two successful movies: Peter Glenville’s ME AND THE COLONEL (1958) and Melville Shavelson’s THE FIVE PENNIES (1959). The Danny Kaye most familiar to audiences made his foray into television entertainment in 1960 in the first of three An Evening with Danny Kaye specials. In 1963, Kaye began his own, Emmy-winning weekly variety hour on CBS. He returned to Broadway in 1970 as Noah in Two by Two, with music by Richard Rogers. Though he injured his leg and hip, he still performed every night—from a wheelchair. Kaye’s television appearances included Pinocchio, Peter Pan, The Twilight Zone, The Muppet Show and The Cosby Show. The Emmy-winning special, Look-in at the Met, from the Metropolitan Opera, explained opera to children. 68 In 1979, Kaye celebrated his 25th anniversary as UNICEF’s first Goodwill Ambassador, and made The Guinness Book of Records by piloting a private jet to 65 cities in the U.S. and Canada in 5 days, stopping at each city’s airport to greet thousands of UNICEF volunteers for Halloween’s Trick or Treat campaign. When Danny Kaye died on March 3, 1987, not only had he lived the American Dream, he had lived a bucketful of dreams. He stood for excellence in his profession, had reached a level of intellectual, artistic and humanitarian achievement attained by few individuals. The son of immigrant parents, product of the streets of New York, ambassador of laughter to an entire world and Pied Piper to its children, Kaye was an authentic giant of his times. As part of this tribute on September 4th, which his daughter Dena Kaye will attend, a selection of three films with Danny Kaye will be screened. 69 SELECTED FILMOGRAPHY 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1951 1952 1954 1954 1956 1958 1958 1959 1961 1963 1969 UP IN ARMS by Elliott Nugent WONDER MAN by H. Blanchett’s roles on stage include Hedda Gabler for which she won the Ibsen Centennial Award, Helpmann Award and the MO Award for Best Actress; Richard II in the celebrated STC production of The Wars of The Roses; Blanche Du Bois in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire which travelled to much acclaim from Sydney to Washington and New York (her performance was considered the ‘performance of the year’ by The New York Times) and for which she received the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress in a non-resident production; Yelena in Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, in a new adaptation by Andrew Upton, which toured to Washington in 2011 and New York in 2012 to great critical acclaim and for which she received the Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor in a Play and the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress in a non-resident production; and Lotte in Botho Strauss’ Gross und Klein, which toured extensively throughout Europe in 2012 and was part of the London Cultural Olympiad, and for which she received the Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor in a Play. She is currently performing opposite Isabelle Huppert in 72 STC’s production of Jean Genet’s The Maids, directed by Benedict Andrews and co-adapted by Andrew Upton and Benedict Andrews. She has been awarded the Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society through Acting and in 2007 she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. She has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2008, she co-Chaired the creative stream of the Prime Minister of Australia’s National 2020 Summit. She is a patron of the Sydney Film Festival and an ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Australian Film Institute. Blanchett will appear soon in Woody Allen’s BLUE JASMINE, presented this year at the Deauville American Film Festival, and George Clooney’s THE MONUMENTS MEN. Later this year, she will begin production in London on Disney's live-action CINDERELLA as well as John Hillcoat’s 999. She has also completed production on two untitled Terrence Malick films with pending release dates. In 2014, she will star in David Mamet’s film KESTREL followed by the Todd Haynes’ film CAROL, based on the Patrica Highsmith novel The Price of Salt. Cage was raised in Long Beach, California, and lived there until his family moved to San Francisco when he was 12. Cage began acting at age 15 when he enrolled in San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater. He later moved to Los Angeles and while still a high school student, landed a role in the television film The Best of Times. He made his feature film debut in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH in 1982 and truly broke through in RUMBLE FISH (1984) by his uncle Francis Coppola with whom he teamed back in 1984 for THE COTTON CLUB. The same year, his portrayal of a tormented Vietnam vet in BIRDY first established him as a serious actor. Directed by Alan Parker, BIRDY won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. From then on, Cage started multiplying roles. He played in PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED (1986), his third film under the direction of Coppola, RAISING ARIZONA (1987) by Joel Coen, MOONSTRUCK (1987) by Norman Jewison, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, VAMPIRE’S KISS (1988) by Robert Bieman and David Lynch's WILD AT HEART, in which Cage starred opposite Laura Dern, and which won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. His memorable performance as an alcoholic drinking himself to death in Mike Figgis' acclaimed drama LEAVING LAS VEGAS earned Cage an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and Best 75 Actor awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics and the National Board of Review. During the 90’s, and among the biggest hits of his filmography, Cage was the lead role in countless successful action-packed films: THE ROCK (1996) by Michael Bay, CON AIR (1997) by Simon West, respectively first and second of the seven films with producer jerry Bruckheimer, FACE/OFF (1997) by John Woo, opposite John Travolta, SNAKE EYES (1998) by Brian De Palma, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999) by Martin Scorsese, and GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS (2000) by Dominic Sena. In 2002, Cage further solidified his leading man status when he received Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations for his dual role as twin brothers Charlie and Donald Kaufman in Spike Jonze's quirky comedy, ADAPTATION.. The same year, he made his feature film directorial debut with SONNY, world premiere at the Deauville Film Festival, and his production company, Saturn Films, produced the drama THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE by Alan Parker. In the 2000’s, Cage kept on portraying eclectic characters: fearless adventurer in NATIONAL TREASURE (2004) by Jon Turteltaub, and the sequel National Treasure: BOOK OF SECRETS (2007), merchant of death in LORD OF WAR by Andrew Niccol, witness of history and miracle survivor in WORLD TRADE CENTER (2006) by Oliver Stone or stunter-rider from Hell in GHOST RIDER (2007), policeman looking for redemption in Werner Herzog’s THE BAD LIEUTENANT : PORT OF CALL – NEW ORLEANS (2009) or father-figure superhero in KICK-ASS by Matthew Vaughn. The tribute to Nicolas Cage, in his presence, will be held on Monday, September 2, followed by the premiere of JOE by David Gordon Green, who will introduce the film on stage. He started out assisting his mother, herself a photographer, specializing in photos of infants. With a keen interest in underground movements and the blossoming subculture of the 1960s, he began to photograph suburban America and its disaffected, drug-taking youth in his home town. He came to critical attention in 1971 with the photo documentary book Tulsa, composed of self-portraits and photos of his friends living on the fringes of society. His subsequent books – Teenage Lust, centered on a Porto Rican hustler in New York, and The Perfect Childhood featuring photos of naked teenagers and press cuttings about youths guilty of killings – both feature an unflinching, almostanthropological vision of his contemporaries and youth in particular. His work has been exhibited in museums around the world, including MOMA, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim in New York, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, which dedicated a major retrospective to him in 2010. Martin Scorsese and Gus Van Sant acknowledged the influence of Larry Clark’s work on their respective films TAXI DRIVER and DRUGSTORE COWBOY, and it was their encouragement which led him to direct his first movie, KIDS, in 1995. 79 Based on a script from Harmony Korine (GUMMO, SPRING BREAKERS), the film painted an uncompromising portrait of a group of New York teens, involving sex and substance abuse in the era of HIV. The film caused controversy at the Sundance Festival, where it premiered. He followed up with ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE (1998) – a road movie starring James Woods, Melanie Griffith and the young Vincent Kartheiser – then BULLY (2001), inspired by a true story, and which again explored the world of teenagers and the visceral link with violence. In parallel, Larry Clark made the TV-movie Teenage Caveman in 2001, an HBO commission, and published Punk Picasso, a sort of autobiographical scrapbook tracing his turbulent past. KEN PARK (2002), again directed from a script by Harmony Korine, was censored in Australia, the UK, France and the United States, where the film is still banned and unreleased today. With WASSUP ROCKERS (2005), he adopted an almost documentary style to follow the tribulations of a group of skaters upsetting the palm-lined streets of Beverly Hills. In 2012, Larry Clark decided to distribute his latest film, MARFA GIRL, via his own website: www.larryclark.com. The movie won the Best Film Award at the Rome International Festival. During summer 2013, he began shooting THE SMELL OF US in Paris, his first film in French. By continually selecting daring material, championing technological innovations, and remaining handson in her approach, Hurd has carved out a leading position in the previously male-dominated world of the blockbuster, and become a recognized creator of iconic cultural touchstones. After a successful rise from Roger Corman's executive assistant to head of marketing at New World Pictures, Hurd's production career launched when she produced and co-wrote James Cameron’s THE TERMINATOR (1984). This success was quickly followed by James Cameron’s ALIENS (1986), which received seven nominations and two Academy Awards, and the Academy Award-winning films James Cameron’s THE ABYSS (1989), TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991) and Stephen Hopkins’ THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1996). Additional feature credits include the Academy Award nominated Michael Bay’s ARMAGEDDON (1998), Louis Leterrier’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008), Karyn Kusama’s ÆON FLUX (2005), Jonathan Hensleigh’s THE PUNISHER (2004), Andrew Fleming’s DICK (1999), and Neal Jimenez and Michael Steinberg’s THE WATERDANCE (1992), which won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, and the Audience and Screenplay Awards at the Sundance Film Festival. 81 When Hurd decided to enter into the world of television, she did so with a bang. Hurd’s record-breaking AMC series, The Walking Dead, currently reigns as the most-watched scripted drama since 2010, beating all broadcast and cable series, and is the number one television series among Adults 18-49. With over 12 million viewers, the show will return for a fourth season and has been honored by the American Film Institute in both 2010 and 2012 as a “Top 10” TV program. With the success of The Walking Dead, Hurd now acts as a Consulting Producer on AMC’s spinoff talk show, Talking Dead (2013). Hurd also serves as an officer of the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and a Governor on the Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Hurd's company, Valhalla Entertainment, has an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions to develop new television and digital series. He went on to star in the big-screen version of the long-running musical GREASE by Randal Kleiser (1978) and the wildly successful URBAN COWBOY by James Bridges (1980) which also influenced trends in popular culture. Additional film credits include the Brian De Palma thrillers CARRIE (1976) and BLOW OUT (1981) as well as Amy Heckerling’s hit comedy LOOK WHO’S TALKING (1989) and Nora Ephron’s comic hit MICHAEL (1996). Travolta starred in John Turteltaub’s PHENOMENON (1996) and took an equally distinctive turn as an action star in John Woo’s topgrossing BROKEN ARROW (1996) opposite Christian Slater, and classic FACE/OFF (1997) opposite Nicolas Cage. He also starred in Simon West’s THE GENERAL’S DAUGHTER (1999), co-starring Madeline Stowe. In 2005, Travolta reprised the role of ultra-cool Chili Palmer in Barry Sonnenfeld’s GET SHORTY (1995) in the sequel BE COOL by F. Gary Gray (2005). In addition, he starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in the independent feature film A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG by Shainee Gabel (2004), which was screened at the Venice Film Festival, where both Travolta and the films won rave reviews. In February 2011, he was honored by Europe’s leading weekly program magazine Hörzu, with the prestigious Golden Camera Award for “International Best Actor” in Berlin, Germany. Travolta earned another Academy Award nomination for his riveting portrayal of a philosophical hit-man in Quentin Tarantino’s PULP FICTION (1994). He also received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for this highly acclaimed role 84 and was named Best Actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, among other distinguished awards. He garnered further praise as a Mafioso-turned-movie producer in the comedy sensation GET SHORTY (1995), winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. In 1998, Travolta was honored by the BAFTAs with the Britannia Award: and in that same year he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chicago Film Festival. He also won the prestigious Alan J. Pakula Award from the US Broadcast Critics Association for his performance in A CIVIL ACTION (1998), based on the best-selling book and directed by Steve Zaillian. He was nominated again for a Golden Globe for his performance in PRIMARY COLORS (1998), directed by Mike Nichols and costarring Emma Thompson and Billy Bob Thornton, and in 2008, he received his fourth Golden Globe nomination for his role as Edna Turnblad in the big-screen, Adam Shankman’s box-office hit HAIRSPRAY. As a result of this performance, the Chicago Film Critics and the Santa Barbara Film Festival decided to recognize Travolta with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his role. Travolta was most recently seen in Tony Scott’s THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (2009), Pierre Morel’s FROM PARIS WITH LOVE (2010) and in the Oliver Stonedirected movie, SAVAGES, based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel and presented at the 2012 Deauville American Film Festival. By honoring John Travolta on Friday, September 6, the Deauville American Film Festival is bringing the spotlight on the aristocracy of talent, carried into the firmament. This star is a legend who has played some mythical movie roles. While some movies owe their success to their director, what would SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, BLOW OUT, HAIRSPRAY, FACE/OFF or PULP FICTION have been without John Travolta? After the first two editions presented by fashion designers, the Festival is this year delighted to offer Carte Blanche to the French electronic music duo © Kim Chapiron “In music as in cinema, the Americans have a science of entertainment which we really love, both for its substance and its style. We leapt at the chance to program this Carte Blanche to share our unabashed passion for the kind of cinema we grew up with, choosing examples of this entertainment form which forged our imaginations as children, then as teenagers in the 1980/90s.” Gaspard Augé & Xavier de Rosnay 87 Ten years ago, the strident beats of “We Are Your Friends” put the spotlight on Justice, a young French duo signed to the label that Pedro Winter had just launched, Ed Banger. The album which followed, “✝”, condensed staccato electro with disco flourishes and the energy of heavy metal. Singles like “D.A.N.C.E”, “Stress” and “Phantom” and their accompanying videos allowed Justice to take over the mantle of the French Touch in electro music of the 1990s with its filtered disco loops. From 2007, following their first album, Justice went on the live circuit with an arena tour taking in a series of festivals and concert venues around the planet. This initial encounter with a live audience was the opportunity for the group to develop a stage show that became more grandiose with every date. The wall of old Marshall amps placed at the front of the stage, the huge cross, the lightshow, and the Justice sound which was totally overhauled for live performance. In 2012, the tour which followed the release of their second album, “Audio, Video, Disco”, took them from Australia to the Unites States, Europe, Asia and South America. The duo are equally at home on the main stage of major rock festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Les Eurockéennes, Les Vieilles Charrues, etc.) and electro gatherings (Ultra, Sonar, Melt, etc.), staging around 100 concerts which has allowed them to hone their performance. As soon as the first notes of “Genesis” are heard, the crowd is off on a sonic rollercoaster for an hourand-a-half of the duo’s tracks pumped up into megamixes and accompanied by a frenetic lightshow. With the album “Access All Arenas”, recorded during their concert in the Roman amphitheater in Nîmes in July 2012, Justice provides a taste of a tour which stretched over almost a year, and uses it to revisit the best of 10 years of existence and three albums (“✝”, “A Cross The Universe” and “Audio, Video, Disco”), conveying all the effervescence and energy of their live shows. Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay will attend Deauville on September 4th to present 3 films as part of their Carte Blanche selection. 88 DEAUVILLE SEASON 4 DEAUVILLE SEASON 4 will once again feature TV series and their creators during the festival’s closing weekend. The line-up includes many PREMIERES, EXCLUSIVE SERIES and MEETINGS on the theme of writing. The programming of Deauville Season 4 sets out to confront, analyze and explore the various links between European writing and its US counterpart. MASTERCLASS VINCE GILLIGAN creator of BREAKING BAD © Frank Ockenfels 3/AMC After inviting renowned screenwriters such as David Chase (creator of The Sopranos), Clyde Phillips (showrunner* for the first four seasons of Dexter), Tom Fontana (creator of Oz and Borgias) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), the Deauville American Film Festival and Deauville Season 4 are this year delighted to be hosting an exceptional masterclass from American director, producer and screenwriter Vince Gilligan. Born in 1967 in Richmond (Virginia, USA) and raised in Farmville and Chesterfield, Vince Gilligan is a graduate of the esteemed Tisch School of the Arts at the University of New York. During his studies, he wrote Home Fries, for which he received the prestigious Virginia Governor’s Screenwriting Award in 1989 and which would be made a decade later by Dean Parisot, starring Drew 89 Barrymore and Luke Wilson. During the same period, he wrote Wilder Napalm, made in 1993 by Glenn Gordon Caron. This story of two pyromaniac brothers attracted the attention of screenwriter Chris Carter, who invited Vince Gilligan to join the group of screenwriters working on the cult series The X-Files. The Soft Light episode (season two, episode 23) marked the start of a fruitful collaboration that would lead him to producing and/or writing 143 episodes of the series. The X-Files entered the annals of US TV series, with spectacular ratings, growing from an average of 14 to 20 million viewers per episode, and garnering record audience figures for certain episodes, including season four, episode 12 which was watched by 29.9 million viewers in the US. From 1993 to 2002, nine seasons of the series screened, with 202 43-minute episodes. It won five Golden Globes including Best Drama Series in 1995, 1997 and 1998; 16 Emmy Awards; and almost 50 other international awards. Gilligan went on to drive the X-Files spin-off, The Lone Gunmen, which, despite the quality of the show, was cancelled after one season in 2001. While demand for his writing skills was limited, Gilligan spent his time devising humorous ways of making a living, including working as a mobile drug dealer, traveling across the USA in an RV. This provided the inspiration for Breaking Bad and the preliminary sketches for the character of Walter White. Given the cautious approach of the TV networks, Gilligan was contacted by AMC, an American cable channel newly involved in the content creation process following in the bold footsteps of HBO and Showtime. Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead all enjoyed very successful debuts on the channel. The black humor of Breaking Bad, its off-beat tone and violent writing have been met with growing international audience and critical acclaim. Kennedy embodied everything that the long-standing head of the FBI detested. J. Edgar Hoover saw his traditionalist, Protestant and conservative vision threatened by the Kennedy clan’s version of a free, Catholic, colorful America. Clyde Tolson, Hoover’s right-hand man and lover, was the last survivor of this bitter power-struggle in the highest offices. Over 90 minutes, between fiction and archive footage, this insider witness reveals all about Hoover and his political strategy, and manages to penetrate as never before the enigmatic personality of Edgar, a man consumed by his demons at the most critical moment in his extraordinary career. As DEXTER is coming to a close and HANNIBAL is just starting, we will explore these stories and characters that cast such fascination despite their horror. Like Joe Carroll in THE FOLLOWING, serial killers have their own disciples. They are part of a narrative heritage, and are each adapted to a storyline that they attempt to control and fashion. What are the narrative and reflective mechanisms of these stories with their plot twists? What is their cultural significance? The Festival is delighted to welcome the following academics: SYLVAINE BATAILLE (Lecturer, University of Rouen) is the author of several articles about series (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, ROME, SONS OF ANARCHY), and co-wrote the second issue of the review TV/Series. MARJOLAINE BOUTET (Lecturer, University of Picardie) is the author of Séries Télé pour les Nuls (First, 2009); Sériescopie: Guide Thématique des Séries Télévisées (Ellipses, 2011, with P. Sérisier and J. Bassaget); Cold Case: la Mélodie du Passé (PUF, 2013); and also writes columns for Phosphore and Today in English. SARAH HATCHUEL (Professor, University of Le Havre) is head of the Identities and Cultures Research Group. She is the author of Lost: Fiction Vitale (PUF, 2013) and with Monica Michlin is co-writing a book on dreams in TV series (Rouge Profond, 2014). She co-directs the review TV/Series (tvseries.univlehavre.fr). ARIANE HUDELET (Lecturer, University Paris Diderot) co-directs the review TV/Series, of which she also edited the first issue. She is the author of works on adaptation and articles about TV series (THE WIRE, TREME, the issue of credits). MONICA MICHLIN (Lecturer, University Paris-Sorbonne) co-edited the issue entitled “Les Pièges des Nouvelles Séries Télévisées Américaines” of the review GRAAT online (2009), and has published articles on the serial structure in 96 audiovisual works, pilots of contemporary series, American “presidential” series, and the “queering” of the codes of series in THE WIRE and QUEER AS FOLK. SHANNON WELLS-LASSAGNE (Lecturer, University of Bretagne Sud) is the author of the book Étudier l'Adaptation Filmique (with Laurent Mellet, Presses Universitaires de Rennes). She has written articles on series including THE OFFICE, GAME OF THRONES, TRUE BLOOD, CASTLE and COMMUNITY. 97 THE ROUND TABLE FROM PAGE TO SCREEN, THE GENRE IN QUESTION Saturday, September 7 – 10: 30am Building on the success of the three previous editions, Deauville Season 4 this year continues its exploration of screenwriting mechanisms through a round table which will compare the working methods of writers for the small and big screens. This year, authors, screenwriters of feature films and writers for TV series will examine the crossovers between their different styles of writing: from page to screen, from big to small screen, from documentary to fiction, from one genre to another. Their different points of view, esthetics and intentions promise a rich dialog. Moderated by STÉPHANE FOENKINOS, this discussion will bring together: MARC DUGAIN French novelist born in Senegal, he drew inspiration from his childhood, especially his maternal grandfather who fought in WW1, to write his first novel published in 1998, The Officers’ Ward. The novel was a bestseller and was adapted as a movie in 2001 by the director François Dupeyron. With AN ORDINARY EXECUTION, he adapted his own work for the cinema in 2009, based on the first part of his eponymous novel. He also directed an adaptation of part of his novel The Curse of Edgar in the form of a documented fiction. FABRICE GOBERT He began his career as a director for television. Switching between drama series and documentaries, he worked on the documentary series for Arte, Lettre à un jeune cinéaste, and directed several episodes of the series Âge sensible for France 2. After the well-received short film CAMILLE, he directed his first feature film, LIGHTS OUT, selected for the Cannes sidebar Un Certain Regard in 2010. The film attracted the attention of Canal + and the production company Haut et Court, who hired Gobert to direct the supernatural series The Returned, an unprecedented critical and popular hit. ÉRIC OVERMYER American screenwriter, producer, and showrunner, he has also written for the stage, notably the play On the Verge which has been widely performed in English-speaking territories. He mainly works in movies and TV, as both 98 producer and screenwriter. He has written episodes of Homicide, created by David Simon, who also called on him to write for the fourth season of the hit series The Wire. Their collaboration gave rise to the HBO series Treme, which is set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans. FRANK SPOTNITZ American screenwriter, producer, and showrunner, he is best-known for his work on series such as The X-Files, or more recently Hunted. He co-wrote 40 episodes of The X-Files for TV, and was the producer and co-writer of two feature films adapted from the series (The X-Files in 1998 and X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008). He is currently writing a series adapted from the TRANSPORTER hit movie franchise, and is writing and coproducing an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle for Ridley Scott. * STÉPHANE FOENKINOS has worked as casting director on around 60 movies. His credits as screenwriter include co-writing the series Vénus & Apollon (2009) for Arte, and Hard 2 (2011) for Canal +. Along with his brother, the novelist David Foenkinos, he directed the feature film DELICACY adapted from David’s novel, LA DÉLICATESSE, starring Audrey Tautou and François Damiens. Deauville Season 4 is supported by: 99 FRANCO-AMERICAN MEETING Monday September 2 - 3:30pm Always eager to enrich dialog between movie professionals, and buoyed by the success of the two previous editions, the Deauville American Film Festival is once again partnering with the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and France’s Association of Cinema Producers (APC), in collaboration with the Île de France Film Commission for the third Franco-American Meeting. nd 2 France-American round table, 2 September 2012, featuring Alain Attal, Paula Wagner and Eric Altmayer / © Robin Petillault INNOVATION vs. CREATIVITY? The digital revolution affects, impacts upon and transforms all facets of filmmaking, from a film’s conception, its writing, the scale of its ambition through to its distribution and consumption by the audience. It has also prompted every section of the industry to question what it does, and how this is changing. Two decades after it began, can we today measure the real impact of this revolution on the movie production process? Does the growth in distribution platforms indeed open the way for new financing models? And have technological changes facilitated the emergence of new areas for creation, capable of meeting the needs of filmmakers, whether producers or directors? These questions and others will be tackled by Gale Anne Hurd, Thomas Anargyros and Marc Missonnier in an effort to get to grips with the new challenges facing cinematographic production. (Le Film français) 100 TRIBUTE TO GALE ANNE HURD The Deauville American Film Festival will pay tribute to the US producer Gale Anne Hurd, saluting her audacious work throughout a visionary career that includes seminal hits such as ALIENS, THE WALKING DEAD, THE ABYSS and THE TERMINATOR. in partnership with: 101 DEAUVILLE AMERICAN FILM CORNER A dedicated space for sellers and buyers to discover and (re)consider the best of current US movie production. The Deauville American Film Festival and the CINANDO Video Library are reteaming for another edition of the DEAUVILLE AMERICAN FILM CORNER, initiated in 2011 and designed to encourage acquisitions of “made in USA” movies. Part of the line-up of the 39th edition, as well as certain new films for which French rights are available and which drew our attention during the selection process, will be presented in this professional space exclusively reserved for buyers and sellers. The Festival is thereby reaffirming its wish to act as place of culture, where the acquisition of films is part of the artistic economy. At the end of the Festival, subscribers to the Cinando.com platform can watch or rewatch all or part of the line-up of the 39th edition, and potentially acquire one of the films screened. This was the case in previous years for THE DYNAMITER (Summertime) by Matthew Gordon and UNA NOCHE by Lucy Mulloy, Grand Jury Prize in 2012, both securing French deals thanks to the DEAUVILLE AMERICAN FILM CORNER. In collaboration with: 102 MASTERCLASS STEVEN SODERBERGH Saturday, August 31st - 12:30 pm In conjunction with the screening of his latest film, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, director Steven Soderbergh will be giving a filmmaking masterclass, hosted by director & screenwriter Nicolas Saada (ESPION(S), 2009). Steven Soderbergh follows in the footsteps of Darren Aronofsky, Neil LaBute, James Foley, Edward Burns, Scott McGehee, David Siegel, Jonathan Nossiter, Charlie Kaufman, Andy Garcia, Terry Gilliam, Roger Avary and last year, William Friedkin. 103 MASTERCLASS BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Thursday, September 5 - 5:30 pm The Festival is delighted to program an exceptional masterclass given by Christopher Vogler, who will provide a filmic analysis of BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD by Benh Zeitlin, which won the Grand Prize at Deauville American Film Festival last year. The American expert in narrative Christopher Vogler will use his expertise on the heroic figure to question the codes of this enigmatic, vibrant and moving film. His reading will attempt to reveal the links between the film and an astonishing, primitive mythology that is peculiar to American culture. According to him, “BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is a film that brings people together, provoking strong reactions and defying narrative conventions through its dreamlike style. Is it a fable, a work of magical neo-realism, a modern myth, whether reflective or primitive, or a representation of the subconscious?” Christopher Vogler is a regular advisor to Hollywood studios for major US productions, and an internationally renowned professor of film. His bestseller The Writer’s Journey investigates modern storytelling through the prism of the narrative structures of mythology. His analysis has become a reference in movie and TV production and his work is included in several academic programs in cinema and literature. He contributed to the writing of Disney films like THE LION KING and ALADDIN, worked with David Fincher on FIGHT CLUB, Terrence Malick on THE THIN RED LINE, and with Darren Aronofsky on THE WRESTLER and his next film, NOAH. The ESRA group is the largest private training organization in France in the field of cinema and television. Since it was founded in 1972, the group has trained more than 4,000 working professionals. It comprises the film and TV school ESRA, the sound engineers’ school ISTS, and the ESRA 3D school of animated film. Since 2007, ESRA has offered an optional fourth year in New York. The school offers professional master’s degrees in screenwriting and production, as well as initiation internships in the audiovisual sector under the JUNIOR scheme. THE NOVEL I CANADA Great Falls, Montana, 1960. Dell Parsons is 15 when his parents carry out a hold-up, in the desperate hope of paying off a threatening creditor. But the heist fails, his parents are arrested, and Dell finds himself faced with a choice between running away or life in an orphanage. He decides to flee, crossing the Canadian border into Saskatchewan. There he is taken in by Remlinger, a man who makes him his apprentice and factotum. Remlinger is a libertarian”, a believer in total individual freedom, who lives according to his own laws whilst organizing hunts. Canada is the tale of these years of apprenticeship against a magnificent backdrop of nature, amongst men for whom only brute force counts, which is underlined by a savagely violent final episode. Years later, Dell, now a university professor, looks back on those years which marked him for life. This novel of exceptional power and beauty will remind fans of Richard Ford of his earlier book published in France by Éditions de l’Olivier in 1991, Wildlife. 109 THE AUTHOR I RICHARD FORD Born in 1944 in Jackson, Mississippi, Richard Ford is a major figure of contemporary American literature. After publishing two novels in 1976 and 1981 (A Piece of My Heart and The Ultimate Good Luck), he temporarily abandoned writing and dedicated himself to journalism for the US magazine Inside Sports. The Sportswriter (published in France by Éditions de l’Olivier, 1999), a caustic satire on the American middle-classes, won him wider acclaim. It was also the first tome of an ambitious literary project built around the character of Frank Bascombe, who would appear in two more of his novels. The first of these was in 1995 in Independence Day, a broad sweep combining personal history with the political history of the United States, and which won the Pen/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1996. Then Lay of the Land (2006) closed the cycle based on Bascombe, this character who some compare to John Updike’s Rabbit, and who reflects 30 years of American life. 110 PAST LITERARY AWARDS 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1998 PAS SIDNEY POITIER by Percival Everett MINUIT DANS UNE VIE PARFAITE by Michael Collins BLONDE by Joyce Carol Oates AND QUE LE VASTE MONDE POURSUIVE SA COURSE FOLLE by Colum McCann MARILYN AND JFK by François Forestier LA BELLE VIE by Jay McInerney HENRI OU HENRY, LE ROMAN DE MON PERE by Didier Decoin SANCTUARY V by Budd Schulberg DE MARQUETTE A VERACRUZ by Jim Harrison RIEN NE VA PLUS by Douglas Kennedy LE BAISER by Danielle Steel BIG JANE by Michael Cimino ET SI C’ETAIT VRAI by Marc Lévy TU M’APPARTIENS by Mary Higgins Clark PRESS RELATIONS - EDITIONS DE L’OLIVIER Aurélie Lacroix – Tel : +33 (0)1 41 48 84 71 111 PRACTICAL INFORMATION WELCOME DESK, INFORMATION POINT & TICKET SALES Centre International de Deauville (C.I.D.) The art of blending created by John Walker is carried on by generations of Walkers, with knowledge and passion. Undeniably rich and smooth, Johnnie Walker blends, and mostly BLACK LABEL, are acclaimed as masterpieces of blending craftsmanship. Built on roots from the four corners of Scotland, the brand’s legacy is as diverse as these areas that create one of the richest stories of all kinds. The Walker establishment has always demonstrated a pioneering spirit. Since 1870, the Brand identity is created: oblique label and square bottle. But it’s only in 1909, when the Red Label was launched, that the Dandy or The Striding Man was drawn, a caricature of its founder, John Walker. This Gentleman embodies the brand spirit: the pioneering spirit, success, dynamism The Man Who Walked Around The World. Proud of its origins and codes, Johnnie Walker asked the famous actor Robert Carlyle, born and raised in Scotland, to discuss the entire story of Johnnie Walker in one sequence shot, walking through a Scottish landscape in a 6 minutes commercial broadcast worldwide. This movie, shot near Loch Doyne (Perthshire) reveals the brand’s heritage but it also reveals how close the brand is to the world of cinematographic art. For this reason, Johnnie Walker is very pleased to meet you each evening on the terrace of the Casino Royal Barrière and also in every places of the city for this 38th American Film Festival. Renault and film: a love story dating back over 110 years Automotive pioneer Louis Renault was one of the first industrialists to see cinema as a new tool for communicating on his products. In Boulogne-Billancourt, west of Paris, the studios of the Lumière brothers were located just a few streets away from his workshops. This closeness engendered a unique relationship that has made Renault a preferred partner to actors and directors. Today, more than 200 TV and movie productions are filmed each year with a special fleet of 40 Renault vehicles. In addition to its long-standing commitments to TV and cinema production, Renault also partners the biggest movie festivals and awards ceremonies, including Cannes, the Césars, Deauville, Alpe d’Huez, Marrakesh, London and many more across Europe. And following on from 2012, the French carmaker will also be electrifying the festival nights with a fleet of Twizy and ZOE models.
