CEO Column: A year of giving
Your donations help NCCC fulfill its mission to prevent cancer
With the close of another year, my
thoughts turn to the wonderful gifts the
Northern California Cancer Center has
received from you, our donors. You have
played a critical role in our mission to find
answers to imperative questions about
cancer prevention and survivorship.
This past year, the Northern California
Cancer Center received national and international media attention for studies on the
parallel declines in breast cancer diagnoses
and hormone replacement therapy use,
the possible prevention of non-Hodgkin
lymphoma through dietary changes, and a
profile of the health concerns of Vietnamese nail salon workers.
Your generous contributions help us
further the science of cancer for these and
many other important studies. I hope you
feel the same sense of pride that I do when
NCCC’s work is publicly recognized.
In addition, NCCC is increasing its outreach in the community. In partnership
with Stanford University, NCCC is building a comprehensive outreach program by
improving community cancer education,
making better cancer information readily
available, and improving access to cancer
care. With programs and publications in
English and Spanish, and the expansion of
existing seminars and conferences, we are
well on our way.
Your support has enabled NCCC to
develop and maintain resources unavailable elsewhere. NCCC committed to continuing the online Bay Area Breast Cancer
Resource Guide, a comprehensive listing of
breast health and breast cancer resources
created by the Better Health Foundation,
which closed its doors last year.
In 2006, NCCC was able to count among
its donors a number of new and promising
partnerships. These include working with
the Fremont IronCops, four members of
the Fremont Police Department who raised
money for NCCC through their participation in the Ironman Canada triathlon.
We also received valuable sponsorship
support from the Fremont Bank Foundation in bringing CBS news anchorwoman
Katie Couric to San Francisco to talk about
her experiences with cancer.
As a nonprofit organization, it is only
through your ongoing support that we can
continue our essential research work and
educational programs. We thank all of you
for your support and formally acknowledge you in this special tribute issue of the
Highlights newsletter.

NCCC pathway to
cancer prevention
and survivor care
Join us in our quest to understand
and advance the science of cancer
We’re looking for lasting solutions in cancer prevention and survivorship. If you are interested in
leaving a legacy, please consider joining us.
For more than 30 years, NCCC has operated as
an independent organization that depends on
support from the community as well as grants
to conduct research, disseminate cancer registry
information and provide community programs
for patients, their families and friends.
Please consider how your gift can help us
make a difference in the lives of individuals
living with cancer.
The Northern California Cancer Center gratefully acknowledges a generous gift of $50,000
from the Sophie W. Jakobsen Trust for education
purposes. Ms. Jakobsen valued our efforts to
educate the community and provide resources
as individuals face cancer themselves or with
loved ones.
This generous gift will go a long way in
helping us extend outreach to those who need
it most.
To encourage and recognize these important
gifts during the donor’s lifetime, NCCC welcomes donors to the Legacy Circle. This new
giving circle acknowledges intentions of future
gifts of $5,000 or more through trusts, wills or
other means of gift planning.
For information, please call Development
Director Emma Lee Twitchell at (510) 608-5051.
NCCC sincerely thanks retiring board member
Dr. Vincent Caggiano for his guidance and service.

Dr. Vincent Caggiano retires from board
Dr. Vincent Caggiano, Research Medical
Director for Sutter Cancer Center in Sacramento, is retiring from NCCC’s board
of trustees after having spent 23 years on
the board and serving as chair.
In NCCC’s early years, he also served
on the committee of the Northern California Oncology Group, which conducted
clinical trials until the early ‘90s. He
served on a number of other committees
including membership and development.
NCCC interviewed Dr. Caggiano about
his experience as a board member.
NCCC: Why did you decide to serve on the
NCCC board of trustees?
Caggiano: I always felt that NCCC was
a nice bridge between academia and
community physicians. The organization
fulfilled a role that others didn’t want
to, with epidemiology research, in-depth
supportive care and education for cancer
patients. These are things that hospitals,
medical schools and academic institu-
tions don’t do well. Because of the rich
epidemiology background and the
running of the SEER registry, NCCC
has the unique opportunity to do a
lot of research and to move ahead and
collaborate with others on molecular
research. That’s where medicine is
heading, and the more we learn, the
more we find out how complex it is.
Having a registry and a core staff of
epidemiologists is a big plus.
NCCC: What did you enjoy about serving
on the board?
Caggiano: Most of all, meeting people
from all walks of life, especially those
who weren’t in the medical profession and whom I’m not ordinarily in
contact with. I learned a lot from the
other board members, and I hope I
helped others to see me in the same
way, that we all have something to
offer. Coming from Sacramento, I
thought it was important to show that
we have to break down geographic
barriers. What happens at NCCC has
important ramifications elsewhere in
the state and in the country.
NCCC: Why did you decide to retire from
the board?
Caggiano: First, I’m getting on in
years. I’m semi-retired and working
part-time as a research physician. I’m
also heavily involved in the Sutter
Medical Foundation board. I couldn’t
devote any more spare time. It was a

serving on NCCC’s board, but I’ve lived
and practiced in Sacramento for 35 years.
My life and heart are here. So, instead of
trying to do everything, I decided to focus
on doing one thing and doing it well.
NCCC: What do you like about NCCC as an
organization?
Caggiano: I like the people, the scientists and the professionalism, and what
you’re doing. You are the unsung heroes
- hospitals and medical schools get all
the credit because they’re taking care of
patients. But the work you’re doing in
epidemiology provides us hints into what
we should be studying and how. NCCC
doesn’t get the hype that these other
organizations get, but it fulfills a role in
providing education to the public and to
cancer survivors. Other organizations are
only recently beginning to do this, but
over the years, NCCC has done an excellent job.
NCCC: What advice do you have for NCCC as
an organization moving forward?
Caggiano: To always keep your eyes open
for opportunities. Be f lexible. We can’t be
rigid in our thinking. The role of NCCC
is changing, and sometimes change is
perceived as a bad thing. But if you keep
your mind open, change can be a good
thing. Be vigilant and always look at the
big picture. NCCC has done this in its evolution, and its gotten bigger, stronger and
better as an organization for it. ●

Hilary Newsom Callan
receives AFP award
NCCC board member Hilary Newsom Callan received the “Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer” award from the Association of
Fundraising Professionals-Golden Gate Chapter and Northern
California Grantmakers at an award ceremony held on November 14, 2006 in San Francisco. Callan was nominated by NCCC.
The award description asked for a nominee who “gave time
and energy without compensation and who offers organizations and fundraising staff their talent for strategy, relationship
enhancement and the successful solicitation of donations, and
someone who motivates others to give.” Callan is the epitome of
this description and NCCC is very proud that she was the worthy
recipient of the award.
“We are very privileged to have Hilary serve on our board. Her
unflagging energy, tremendous enthusiasm and insightful ideas
are invaluable to NCCC,” notes CEO Donald Nielsen.
Callan is vice president of PlumpJack Management Group. ●

Study by NCCC scientist garners

Dr. Christina Clarke, Ph.D. examines declining breast cancer rates and hormone therapy use
Dr. Christina A. Clarke, a
junior research scientist
with the Northern California
Cancer Center, is doing highly
visible work understanding
the roles of hormone therapy
and other risk factors in
explaining breast cancer rates.
Clarke has worked to
understand the high rates of
breast cancer in Marin and
San Francisco counties as part
of teams of other scientists,
community agencies and the
media, and more recently has
been studying the parallel
declines of hormone therapy
use and breast cancer rates in
California and the U.S.
In her analysis published in
the November 20, 2006 issue
of the Journal of Clinical
Oncology, Clarke found significant reductions in both the
use of hormone replacement
therapies and the incidence of
breast cancer in California in
the years following the release
of the 2002 Women’s Health
Initiative (WHI), the trial
that definitively established a
link between hormones and
breast cancer. This analysis
was the first to show that
breast cancer incidence drops
observed in 2003 persisted
in 2004, further bolstering
the theory that women who
discontinue hormone therapy
use may reduce their chances
of developing breast cancer.
Clarke’s findings made
national and international
news in December, garnering
media coverage as far away as
China and Britain, as well as in
U.S. media including Newsweek,
the New York Times, NBC, CBS,
the Los Angeles Times, and the
San Francisco Chronicle.
For the future, Clarke plans
to focus on conducting more
detailed surveillance studies
of breast cancer subtypes and,
with her colleagues at NCCC,
designing a means of monitoring breast cancer rates in
sociodemographically distinct

Real Life
Survivor Stories: Jennifer Wake
This is third in a series of talks with breast cancer survivors
She addressed 200 individuals at
NCCC’s 5th Annual Alison Taylor Holbrooks/Barbara Jo Johnson Breast Cancer
Conference held in San Francisco in 2006.
NCCC: What have you been working on lately?
Jennifer: I worked on an essay for one of
the “Cup of Comfort” books, which is due
out later this year. You can go to www.
cupofcomfort.com to find them. I also do
some freelance writing projects here and
there.
Jennifer Wake
A mother of two young boys, Jennifer
Wake was diagnosed with breast cancer
in October 2003 when her children were
one and three years old.
Wake, a freelance writer, was introduced to NCCC Community Education
Director Pamela Priest Naeve through
her friend Linda Childers, who had done
some freelance work with the organization.
NCCC: What is the benefit of an organization
like NCCC to people living with cancer?
Jennifer: When NCCC hosts programs like
the annual conference, you get a wonderful sense of camaraderie with other
survivors.
With the speakers and resources NCCC
provides at these programs, you get to ask
questions and get answers from physicians and researchers directly. These are
people who know so much about the
disease.
We also get to hear about new technol-
ogies and how we might be able to utilize
them, which is just invaluable.
NCCC: What would you like people living with
cancer to know?
Jennifer: A valuable lesson has been,
going through all of this crap of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and
hair loss, you begin losing the sense that
you’ll live forever. When that happens,
you come away with the reality that
you have more strength than you ever
thought you did.
For a while, I wallowed in self-pity. We
called it, “riding the pity train.” But then
I had an epiphany. I asked myself what
would my kids do without me and then
I realized that kids will go on. I’ve set up
traditions for them to have without me
and looked for ways to have comfort and
security in the present. I know I could let
it go and they’d still have these traditions
and memories.
NCCC hosts Body & soul program
Program provides wellness, empowerment for African American church members
In November 2006, the Northern
California Cancer Center hosted a
training session for the wellness
program: Body & Soul - A Celebration
of Healthy Eating & Living.
The program was developed
for African American churches
to empower and inspire church
members to eat five to nine servings
of fruits and vegetables every day for
better health.
Body & Soul is meant to address
the high risk for serious and often fatal
diseases among African Americans,
including high blood pressure,
diabetes, heart disease and many
types of cancer. A diet high in servings
of fruits and vegetables lowers the risk
for these illnesses and is one of the
easiest ways to improve one’s health.
The program also serves as a
gateway for church members to adopt
other healthy lifestyle choices such as
exercise and regular early detection
cancer screenings.
Participants in the training had
an opportunity to learn about the
successes and challenges of this
evidence-based program, the tools
and resources available, as well as
how they could be strong partners in
supporting the church in customizing
the program to fit the needs of their
congregation.
Twenty-one participants came
from organizations throughout the
Bay Area and represented hospitals,
faith-based programs, county health
departments, community-based
organizations, churches, and African
American nutrition networks.
The Body & Soul program was
developed by the National Cancer
Institute in collaboration with the
American Cancer Society and the
Centers for Disease Control, so it was
fitting that NCCC, which sponsors
the NCI’s Cancer Information
Service Partnership Program in
California, host a training for Bay Area
community partners.
To order a free copy of the Body
& Soul guide for your church, call
