Opening the Door to Unconditional Love
An Interview with Marci
M
Shimoff
By Randy Peyser
arci Shimoff is the
author of the #1
New York Times
bestseller, Happy
for No Reason,
six Chicken Soup for the Soul
Randy: I once heard that the
phrase, “Love is a state of being,
not a relationship.”
Marci: That’s exactly what
I mean. We generally think of
Marci: The more we live in
this state of unconditional love,
the less we have an attachment
to how someone responds to
us. When we’re giving love and
love as a stream of energy going between two people. When
we think of love that way we
become what I call, “Love Beggars.” We walk around with our
little cup, hoping to get our fulfillment from other people. We
miss that we’re the ocean of
love!
Love is who we are. When we
recognize and experience that,
instead of being Love Beggars,
we become “Love Philanthropists.” We naturally overflow
with love and it’s effortless. It’s
not something we have to do; it’s
a natural outcome of who we’re
being.
Randy: When we don’t get
back what we’re putting out, disappointment comes up.
want a response in return, that’s
conditional love. That leads to
disappointment. As we develop
this inner state of love, we’re
less attached to someone else’s
response. Their response is more
a reflection of them, than it is
of us. We feel freedom when we
don’t have a need for someone
to respond back.
In the meantime, if you’re
not there yet — which most of
us aren’t — then we have the
ability to love ourselves so when
we do feel disappointment, we
welcome that feeling and allow it to go through us. Arjuna
Ardagh, one of the 150 “Love
Luminaries” I interviewed, said,
“Any feeling fully felt turns into
love.”
books, and Love for No Reason:
7 Steps to Creating a Life of
Unconditional Love. One of
the best-selling female nonfiction authors of all time, Her
books have topped all major
bestseller lists, with 14 million
copies in 33 languages sold.
Marci, who is featured in The
Secret, is also the host of the
national PBS television special, Happy for No Reason.
I’d been looking forward to
interviewing Marci regarding
her new book, Love for No Reason, because my long-term relationship had just ended, and I
was hoping she would show me
some ways to heal my heart. The
simple practices Marci shared
have been immensely helpful.
If your heart is in need of tender, loving care — or if you want
to expand your capacity to love
greater and deeper — Love for
No Reason receives my highest
recommendation. Visit: www.

Randy Peyser: I think the
Beatles said it best: “All we need
is love.” Yet don’t most of us
practice conditional love?
Marci Shimoff: Yes, people
want love but our society has
trained us to love conditionally.
We think we’ll feel love when
the right person shows up. Love
in a relationship is a wonderful
thing, but I call that kind of love,
“love for good reason.” That’s
the kind of love that comes and
goes.
What I believe people want
most deeply is “love for no reason,” or unconditional love, a
love that transcends a particular relationship or situation, a
love that you feel whether you
have a romantic partner or not.
Living in love is not only what
we want, but it’s also our purpose for being on the planet.
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 Randy: The people whom I
know who are unconditionally
loving have all had some kind
of transcendent experience. For
example, you share the story of
Bill Baumann, a popular workshop facilitator who lay down
on his stage, experienced a sense
of paralysis, and re-emerged as
pure love.
Marci: Some of the people I
interviewed, like Bill, spent their
lives doing everything they could
to remove the blocks to love and
then had some kind of spontaneous awakening. Bill discovered
he was no longer his body or his
personality. He was filled with
love. That forever changed him.
Eckert Tolle had a similar experience. You might think these
are random experiences, but in
many cases, people set up the
circumstances in their lives to
welcome in that kind of divine
grace.
Randy: How do you think people set it up?
Marci: I identify 7 doorways
to setting up this experience of
love for no reason. These doorways correlate to our energy
centers, our chakras, and each
doorway allows us to experience
a greater state of unconditional
love.
Randy: Can you share an example?
Marci: Sure. One of the doorways is the “Doorway of Unconditional Self-Love.” Our relationships mirror our relationship with ourselves. When we
don’t love ourselves we can’t
love others. For example, Sally,
who I interviewed, was rushed
to the hospital just before her
50th birthday. She needed a liver
transplant within three days or
she’d die. This shocked Sally because she wasn’t a drinker and
she’d never had liver problems.
Fortunately, an organ donor was
found, she had the surgery, and
all was well for a year. Then the
second liver started failing.
Sally was sitting in her doc(Continued on page 6)

(Continued from page 5)
tor’s waiting room next to an
angry, critical woman who was
having her third liver transplant.
This reminded Sally that in Chinese medicine, all our organs
are related to a particular emotion, and the liver was associated with anger.
So she asked herself, “Where
in my life am I angry?” She realized she was angry at herself.
She was self-critical and never
thought she was good enough.
That moment, Sally made a commitment to practice unconditional self-love every day. Four
months later, her doctor said, “I
have no idea what happened. It
is a miracle. Your liver is healed.”
That was 18 years ago.
This shows the power of unconditional self-love. At the Institute of Heart Math, they found
that five minutes of anger suppresses the immune system for
six hours, whereas five minutes
of love, caring and compassion
will strengthen the immune system for six hours.
Randy: If you’re feeling an-
gry, isn’t it good to get it out?
Marci: Yes, but that doesn’t
necessarily mean to express it
to the person you’re angry at or
to repress it; it means to welcome the feeling and let it flow
through you.
Ask yourself, “What is the
most loving thing I can do for
myself right now?” If you ask this
question every day, you start
retraining yourself to give care
to yourself, rather than to ignore
your importance.
Randy: It’s been my experience that the people who do the
deep work of feeling their grief
develop the greater capacity to
experience much more joy.
Marci: I agree. They say that
when you’re writing a book you
should be careful about what
you’re writing because you will
be vested in it. No sooner had I
signed the contract for Love for
No Reason when my husband
and I decided to divorce. It was
a loving divorce but it was still
challenging. Over the next six
months, three friends died, we
sold our family home of 58 years
that I’d been very attached to,
and three days later, my mother
passed away.
International
So, I practiced everything that
my interview subjects shared.
I felt guilt, pain, and grief. But
because I was practicing these
techniques of love, I got through
the experience much more easily. These techniques were a salve
to help me experience love in
the midst of all the challenges,
sadness, and grief.
Randy: Can you share some
techniques?
Marci: One of my favorites is
Ho’o pono pono, the ancient
Hawaiian Kahuna practice that
consists of saying these four sentences:
“I’m sorry.
Please forgive me.
Thank you.
I love you.”
You don’t say them out loud.
You feel them in your heart toward anyone you are holding
a grudge against — including
yourself.
I’ve had miracles happen
with this technique. For example, my sister and I had an argument and weren’t talking. Three
months later, my family gathered to move my mother into an
assisted-living facility. My sister
and I wouldn’t even make eye
contact. After 3 hours, I felt so
uncomfortable I decided to sit in
my car and do Ho’o pono pono
for her and for me . I did it for
only ten minutes and my heart
melted. I felt great compassion.
I went back inside and within
four minutes, my sister reached
for my hand. That day, there was
a huge shift in our relationship.
Randy: So, forgiveness is
always possible.
Marci: Yes. Write down five
areas in your life where you
haven’t forgiven a person, a situation, or yourself, and practice
Ho’o pono pono as an experiment. Then see what shows up
in your life.
Randy: Can you share another technique?
Marci: Sure. This is an exercise contributed by author Raphael Cushnir about dealing
with difficult feelings. Imagine
stepping into a warm bath, and
as you do so, your body naturally relaxes. Now feel the feeling
you’re resisting and invite it in
with you into that bath. In relaxation, difficult feelings dissolve.
It’s only when we tense up that
feelings get more lodged in our
cells. Another simple technique

I learned from the Institute of
Heart Math is called the “Inner
Ease Technique.” It’s a 3-step process to shift you from the Stress
Response to the Love Response,
which is a physiological state
that has its own brain activity,
heart rhythm and bio-chemical
counterparts.
First, put the palm of your
hand over your heart. This simple action releases the hormone,
oxytocin, which is called the
“love hormone.” It’s what we
feel when we feel bonded and
connected with each other. Second, imagine you are breathing
in and out, slowly and gently, through your heart. This is
called heart-focused breathing.
On every in-breath, the last step
is to imagine you are breathing
in care and self-love from your
whole heart and infusing it into
your being. I do this technique
three times every day, and I’ve
been feeling an amazing expansion in my heart.
Randy: Most women hate
some part of their bodies. How
do we love that which we find
unlovable about ourselves?
Marci: That is key. We’ve been
taught that we need self-esteem,
which is fine, but that’s conditional: I love myself or accept
myself because I look a particular way, or because I’m a great
person, or because I do a great
job. Unconditional self-love
means “I love myself no matter
what.” Most people spend more
time every day focusing on how
they look, rather than on how
they love.
Randy: That’s an important
distinction.
Marci: The purpose of our life
is love. It’s our job description
on earth. During our life review
at the end of our lives there’s
only one question that’s asked
of us, which is, “How much did
you love?”
This is the final exam and you
can’t cram for it at the end. It
doesn’t matter what you do in
life; our job is to love and to
expand our capacity to love.
Love is the truth of who we are.
That’s why we’re so hungry to
experience it. When we experience love, we’re in touch with
our essence. We all know that
feeling. Pain, disappointment
and heartache are simply the
disconnection from the essence
of who we are as love.
The reason it’s so fabulous to
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 be around people who are living
in a state of unconditional love
is that it’s contagious. You want
to be around them. A year ago I
met the Dalai Lama. It doesn’t
matter whether he’s meeting a
head of state or a person on the
street. He feels the primary essence of each person and connects to everybody with love.
Randy: What are some ways
we can express unconditional
love?
Marci: Through words and acts
of kindness. We can use words
to express our gratitude and appreciation. It’s been shown that
acts of altruism are physically
good for us; they change our
physiology — as long as we’re
not giving at our own expense.
When you give and can’t receive, or over-give, you aren’t in
that state of unconditional love;
you’re giving to please, to have
people like you in return for your
giving. That’s not pure giving.
Randy: Can everyone reach a
state of unconditional love?
Marci: There is a happiness
set point, which is the range at
which our happiness hovers. No
matter what good or bad happens to us, within a year, we will
return to our original set point.
This set point can change; it’s
50% genetic and 50% based on
one’s habits. You can raise your
set point by changing your habits.
I believe we also have a “love
set point.” If we start to experience more love, unless we’ve
expanded our “container,” we
will unconsciously sabotage it
because we’ll generally stay at
the level we’re comfortable with.
But you can raise your love set
point.
Randy: How so?
Marci: Practice opening up to
receive. If you’re given a compliment, take it in. It takes a full 20
seconds for us to register when
something positive happens to
us. We have what science calls
a “negativity bias” where we
mostly remember that which
is negative. If you receive ten
compliments and one criticism
on the same day, you’ll remember the criticism. Reverse this by
favoring the positive. Let those
compliments settle into your system for a full 20 seconds.
Randy: With so much conflict
around the world, do you think

The Value of Love
(Continued from page 7)
we’ll ever create a more loving
planet?
Marci: We’re experiencing an
enormous planetary shift. We’re
in polarity. Many people are living in fear or anger. But lots of
people are waking up to recognize that love is where we have
to go. This is the one thing that
will shift the planet and create
the change we’re looking for.
R a n dy : D o yo u o f fer any
programs to help facilitate this
change?
Marci: I have a Love Ambassador Program where people can
learn to teach the Love Course
based on Love for No Reason. I
want this message of love to go
out far and wide because I believe that if each of us feels more
love in our own lives, that is how
we will help create a planet of
peace.
There is a Chinese proverb
that says:
“When there is light in the
soul, there will be beauty in the
person.
When there is beauty in the
person, there will be harmony in
the house.
When there is harmony in the
house, there will be order in the
nation.
When there is order in the
nation, there will be peace in
the world.”
My prayer is that each of us
feels the love in our hearts and
the light in our souls, and through
that may we all heal.

for sure, but there always was a calling to
cuddle up in that old
chicken-feathered
bed. The summer that
changed my life was
when “Skipper” came
into my life. I wanted to call him “Side
Kick” but my Grandma said he
skipped around, so that’s what
we called him. . . Skipper. I was only about 6 that summer and I was so happy school
was out and I began packing
my clothes. Didn’t need much
there. I went barefoot most of
the time and it was hot and
muggy so just a few t-shirts and
shorts. My mom always made
sure I had my toothbrush and
all. Me, I just wanted to go wade
by the river and walk in the
woods. Sometimes we’d ride the
old mule “Hank.” But he walked
too slowly for me. I needed to
run.
When I stepped onto the
porch my grandma smiled and
said, “Child. I’ve got a surprise
for you! Let’s go to the barn.”
I ran — pulling her as fast
as her 78-year-old legs would
waddle. As we entered the barn,
I heard a yelping noise and our
eyes met. Skipper and I just
looked at each other. It was love. Just plain love. That little puppy and I just knew each other. I have never felt that feeling
before. Sure I was
happy when my
younger brother and
sister came into the
world. But this feeling? This was the
first time that I felt
this much joy. My
heart hurt I was so
excited.
From that moment on, Skipper
and I did everything together. We
explored the river where the
bull frogs hide. We chased possums up trees and laughed
at their rat tails. We found a secret place next to the old oak
tree and I told Skipper all my
dreams and my thoughts about
how everything was. He just sat
t h e r e listening and looking at
me with those big browns. I don’t
tell many people this, but Skipper told me some things that
nobody knows.
Summer went way too fast
that year. I remember Mom and
Dad driving up in that old black
car. I think it was a Buick. I told
Skipper they were coming so
he was prepared. I gave him a
bath the night before so he
would smell real good. We ran
up and Skipper just welcomed
them with all of his heart. He
gave my Dad a kiss so big that I
thought I would pop a button or
something.
I just knew everything was

going to be fine. Everyone was
so happy. That night I heard Grandma
talking to them about how Skipper and I had connected and she
was fine if I wanted to take him
home. I couldn’t hear what they
said. Everything seemed so hush
-hush. The next day I remember my
Dad asking me if I wanted to
take Skipper home with me
and I said, “Yes! He’s my best
friend ever!” My Dad had that
look and talked about living in
the city with cars and trucks and
noise and pollution and school
and my brother and sister and
money and our small apartment
and I just didn’t want to hear
any more. Skipper just sat there
looking at me. I don’t know why
but a tear snuck out of my eye.
My Mom said she would give
me a dollar for some candy if I
left Skipper behind. I said, “No
way. A dollar isn’t worth anything. Besides, Skipper and I
belong together.” My Dad smiled and said,
“How about if I give you five dollars and you can do what ever
you want with it?”
I had never held five dollars
in my hands before. That would
buy a lot of candy and anything
else I would want. I said, “Ok.”
The only thing I remember
after that was looking out the
back window of that black car
at my Grandma holding Skipper. I looked at the five dollars in my
hands. I don’t know how or if
I told Skipper goodbye. I don’t
remember much.
Somewhere in time I realized
money can never replace love.
Skipper, where every you are
thank you for loving me, for listening to me and for teaching
me value of love.

Monique: How did you go
from being college athlete and
coach to writing books about
personal and spiritual growth?
Dan: In retrospect, it seems
a natural evolution in my case,
combining a love for teaching,
leading me to first explore how
to increase talent for sports, and
then into the larger arena of
daily life and a quest for those
skill-sets that would improve our
talent for living.
Monique: Given the title of
your book, can you give us a
short description of the four
purposes? And why these four?
Dan: As I note in the book’s
prologue, people have various
ideas about our purpose for living. Some say it’s all about love,
or service, or knowing God. One
could argue that there are ten
or twenty purposes, or as many
as there are people.
Still, just as we divide the
compass into four cardinal directions, it occurred to me (in
a moment of lucidity), that we
are, most fundamentally, here
to learn the lessons of life and
all that entails (the first purpose
I present in the book); but we
can’t ignore that purpose involving our work — our career and
in some cases our calling (the
second purpose).
I wrote a major book, one of
my most popular, called The Life
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 You Were Born to Live: A Guide
to Finding Your Life Purpose, so
I couldn’t very well ignore this
mysterious system or what it reveals (covered in the third purpose); and finally, I present what
mastery. These twelve arenas
address self-worth, self-discipline, energy, money, mind, intuition, emotions, courage, selfknowledge, sexuality, love, and
service.
may be the most important purpose of all (the fourth purpose)
— the one that appears in each
arising moment.
Monique: In The First Purpose, Learning Life’s Lessons,
you suggest that Earth is a perfect school and the daily life is
our classroom. Then what are
the courses we need to pass in
order to graduate?
Dan: Again, in a previous
book — and a course I am now
offering at www.dailyom.com
titled “Master the Peaceful Warrior’s Path” — I present twelve
gateways or golden keys to self-
Yet in this new book, we can
appreciate these areas as required courses in the school
of daily life — what we are really here to master within and
through the theater of our work,
relationships, and physical challenges.
Monique: You wrote, “We
learn to ride the shifting tides of
emotion like skillful surfers as
we grasp the great truth that we
don’t need to feel compassionate, peaceful, confident, courageous, happy, or kind — we only
need to behave that way.” Isn’t
behaving differently from what
we feel a form of pretense or
denial?
Dan: This may be one of the
most controversial areas of my
teaching, because it runs counter
to our dominant social programming and beliefs about how we
have to fix or improve our feelings, or quiet our minds, before
we can live well. So let me put it
in the simplest terms within our
context here: It is only possible
to show courage when we are
feeling afraid of something.
Is behaving with courage
when we feel afraid denial? I
think not. It is the same for any
feeling and any action. We can
feel whatever we feel, yet behave
with kindness, with courage, in a
peaceful way. Paradoxically, doing so reflects a warrior’s spirit.
Monique: The Second Purpose deals with Finding Your
Career and Calling. Why is it
important to differentiate between a career and a calling?
Dan: A primary purpose of
this book was to replace confusion with clarity. Just as I draw
a clear distinction between selfesteem and self-worth in a previous work, here it seems useful
to help people understand that
some of us have a higher calling, drive or interest that may
or may not be a career (or work
that produces income); and that
not every career becomes a calling. Sometimes they merge, and
sometimes they remain separate
in our lives.
M o n i q u e : Yo u w r i t e t h a t
many young people are pressured to choose a career path
before they really know themselves, so they end up choosing what they think they should
do rather than what they really
want to do. Can you say more
about this?
Dan: Until we know who we
are — our talents, interests, and
values — we may make the
right choices for the wrong person! Although there are exceptions, social scientists say that

early marriage, for example, is
the number one predictor of
divorce.
Similarly, having to pick a
long-term career before we understand ourselves often leads to
a mismatch between work and
emerging values. That’s why I
recommend in the book, “Until
you find your career and calling,
just get a job. Meanwhile, stay
open to new opportunities.”
Monique: The Third Purpose
seems the most mysterious,
based on a number system and
one’s date of birth. Where did
you come up with this as the
third purpose of life?
Dan: As I explain in the book,
I learned the fundamental elements of this system from an
unusual mentor. Quite skeptical myself at first, I questioned
Change the way you look
at things, and the things
you look at will change.
— Dr. Wayne Dyer
how working with the numbers
in one’s date of birth could possibly provide accurate information about core elements of
one’s life.
It was only after working with
many, many people and years of
study that I fully came to appreciate the power and clarity of this
mysterious method, and how it
provided deep insight into our
individual life path — information usually hidden beneath the
distractions of daily life.
Monique: In The Fourth Purpose, dealing with each arising
moment, you suggest that “there
is no such thing as a future decision?” What do you mean by
this?
Dan: Thinking about doing
something is the same as not doing it. We can think about and
talk about decisions we are going to make (in the future), but
decisions are always made by
action, in the present moment.
The rest is the subjective merrygo-round. As E.M. Forster wrote,
“How can I know what I think
until I see what I do?”
Monique: What steps can
someone take to immerse themselves in each moment, and find
10 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E the flow or the zone, as some
athletes experience?
Dan: I receive emails from a
number of athletes who have experienced what feels like a mystical moment of transcendence,
and they want to know how to
be in “the zone” all the time.
I respond that the quality and
intensity of our awareness and
attention change all the time.
Naturally, there may be some
moments that feel extraordinary,
when a golfer can “see” the line
to the hole with absolute clarity,
and a tennis play can put every
shot right on the line. We can
increase such moments of clarity
or absorption by practicing what
we do rather than just doing it.
Monique: Each of the four
purposes leads readers toward
greater clarity — even spiritual
awakening. In your other books
you describe instances of your
own awakening. Can you select
one recent moment of transcendence and share what you
felt with our readers?
Dan: Many people love miracles and moments of transcendence — the idea of getting
smacked across the head by a
Cosmic Oar — and many of us
pursue such altered states of
consciousness by various means
and methods. But the reality of
my life has been less like a light
switch turning on, and more like
a dimmer switch slowly turned
up, over time and experience —
brighter in some moments than
others. Nature has always been my
primary teacher — watching
streams flow around obstacles,
pursuing the path of least resistance; observing how trees grow
strong roots, but flexible branches that bend in the wind; how
the seasons change in their own
rhythmic cycles.
The natural world, along with
training (in any sport or art) can
teach us all the universal laws
I describe in another book, The
Laws of Spirit. Now I’m happy
to share the four purposes of life
that lend meaning and direction
to anyone’s life, in any moment
— especially helpful for those at
a crossroads, in transition, going
through changes.

Breaking the Cycle
of Unfulfilling Relationships
An excerpt from How to Create A Magical Relationship:
Three Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life
By Shya & Ariel Kane
If you want to create a working, supportive relationship with
another, it is imperative that you
be willing to be complete in the
relationship you have with your
parents. The dictionary defines
complete as “lacking no component part; full; whole; entire.”
But what does being incomplete
with your parents mean? It is
when you are looking to prove
them wrong or right for what
they did, or didn’t do, or when
you endlessly search for their
weak points.
When you reference how you
are living your life in comparison
to how your parents have lived
their lives and to what they did
or didn’t do for you, then you
are incomplete. If, for example,
in your opinion they were either there too much and smothered you or they were not there
enough and you felt abandoned
and misunderstood, these are
symptoms of being incomplete.
One way or the other, your

responsible for your
actions and start living
your own life.
source of identity is in relation
and reaction to your parents. If
you are saying that your parents
are responsible for the way you
relate, then you are incomplete
with them.
We have seen many adults
who were children of highly-successful people be failures in life
and relationship because they
wanted to prove to their parents
that their parents did it wrong.
Any time things started going too
well, these people would sabotage the possibility of their own
success. Being right was more
important than being happy. The
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 aversion to being like one’s parents is nondiscriminatory; you
can’t just pick and choose the
parts of them you don’t want to
be like. If you are trying to not be
like them, you will avoid even
their “good” traits.
other people, and being responsible for the well-being and survival of the family. Children, by
definition, have an immature
Don’t Blame Your
Parents
You can’t be yourself if you
are avoiding being like one or the
other of your parents, because
then you are not living your own
life. If you are resisting your parents, or going for their approval,
then that relationship will persist, and each action you take
will be filtered in a nanosecond
through your idea of how they
would do things rather than
simply being yourself.
If you are still blaming your
mother or father for the way you
are, you will be handicapped in
your ability to have a fully satisfying relationship. Your relationship to your parents is your
archetypical relationship to men
and women. They did not do it
wrong. They were just living their
lives as best they knew how, and
you happened to be born into
that family.
Your parents probably didn’t
take any courses on parenting or
on how to have satisfying relationships. Neither did their parents — nor theirs. Until recently,
probably within the last fifty
years, there weren’t any classes in parenting or relating. The
way people are is the way they
learned to be in the families in
which they grew up. And, more
than likely, your parents did the
best they knew how to do.
From a child’s point of view,
your parents should have done
things differently. Children’s perspectives are centered on themselves and on what they want.
They cannot take into account
all of the complexities of earning a living, having to relate with
Shya and Ariel Kane
and limited perspective of reality
and can filter day-to-day events
only through how these events
affect them and their desires,
preferences, and wants.
At a young age, you made decisions about who your parents
were and then have held those
decisions over time as though
they are true. Most people don’t
realize that many of their opinions were formed when they
were in a childish temper tantrum or contraction years ago.
LeAnne’s Story
Our friend LeAnne can now
laugh at her child’s interpretation of the things her father did
“wrong.” One rather dramatic
childhood memory had to do
with a vacation she had with
her parents in Greece. While
traveling about the country,
they stopped at a scenic overlook. Because LeAnne was not
tall enough to see over the stone
wall that hugged the cliff face,
her father lifted her up and stood
her on top so that she could enjoy the view.
LeAnne was scared by the
height, and through her imma-
ture perspective, she made up
the story that her father was trying to throw her over the cliff.
This fable remained in place for
years, repeated to herself
and embellished over time.
Eventually, LeAnne realized she had made up a
very imaginative, creative
explanation to justify her
fear and further saw that
her father had no intention
of doing her harm nor had
any desire to hurt her in any
way. Bringing awareness to
how she related to her father released her from her
expectation that men were
out to hurt her.
Some people reading
this excerpt will have had
parents who were, in fact,
abusive or severely lacking in
parenting skills. We don’t mean
to suggest that some individuals
did not experience severe childhood trauma. What we are suggesting is that carrying a grudge
or having a vendetta with one
or both of your parents will severely hamper your ability to
relate.
Even if your parents did things
that were insensitive, ill-advised,
or abusive, there comes a point
where you must choose between
having a fully satisfying life or
being right about how your parents did you wrong.

CTypes – A Breakthrough in Creating
the Relationships of Your Dreams
By David Dibble
For over 30 years, Linda, my
better half of 40 years, and I
have been on a quest to learn as
much as possible about the human experience. We wanted to
know answers to questions such
as, Who are we? and Why are
we here?
We also had a deep commitment to knowing as much as
possible about each other, ourselves individually, and our relationship. What did it mean to
be in a truly committed relationship in which both people were
growing personally, professionally and spiritually?
Along the way we had the
privilege to study with a number of master teachers and people of wisdom. For eight years
we studied directly with our
now old friend, don Miguel
Ruiz. We learned to relate with
each other using the Four Agreements before don Miguel’s The
Four Agreements became a bestselling book.
We also studied eastern teachings, Native American teachings
and other bodies of wisdom that
have been termed universal spiritual principles. It is interesting
that, at the end of the day, the
teachings of all master teachers
is much the same — universal.
Beginning in 1987 and for six
years I studied a body of knowledge called Character Types
(CTypes). Linda and I have been
using them every day since.
CTypes describe how we
THINK and create our individual realities. Of course,
our thinking drives much
of our behavior. Thinking
in many ways also defines
the quality of our relationships.
It’s clear that when we
think negative thoughts
about another, our relationship with that person
will be more distant than
if we think positively about
someone. Because each individual’s reality is created
first in the mind and then in
the outside world, our relationships, good and not so good,
are a function of our thinking.
But back to CTypes and their
power over our relationships.
CTypes — The DNA
of the Mind
Each CType is created in the
individual according to the date,
time, and place of the person’s
birth and corresponds to the
signs of the Western Zodiac.
CTypes are not associated with
Astrology in the traditional
sense. However, because we often talk about the signs of the
Zodiac, the natural tendency is
to think of CTypes as knowledge that came from Astrology.
It didn’t.
The body of knowledge we
call CTypes came directly from
I n n e r Wi s d o m t h r o u g h t h e
sleeping dream state in another
body of work we call DreamWork. The essence of DreamWork is being able to ask Inner
Wisdom questions and receive
answers through a whole new
way of dream interpretation —
which of course came from
Inner Wisdom. Inner Wisdom,
accessed through over 20 years
of intense research of the sleeping dream state and “Dream
Assignments,” shared with us
the marvel of CTypes.
12 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E CTypes can be thought of as
the DNA of the mind and the engine of evolution of the human
mind. Although CTypes have
David and Linda Dibble
been with us since the beginning of time (time being created
only in the human mind), they
are simply a foundational human principle whose time has
come.
CTypes and
Astrology
For those of you who are into
Astrology, let me share a couple
of thoughts. Although I am by
no means an expert in Astrology, my personal belief is that
there is some type of connection
between CTypes and Astrology.
Human beings are connected to
the planets and stars, which is
the basis of Astrology. Physics
tells us as much.
The fact that the human body
contains a number of elements
essential to life that do not exist
on Earth, is telling. Most of these
essential elements come to Earth
from red giant stars (dying stars)
in a never-ending gentle rain of
stardust.
The fact that CTypes correspond to the signs of the Western Zodiac is not an accident.
Based upon information we have
received from Inner Wisdom
(DreamWork), I believe the connections between CTypes and
Astrology will begin to emerge
in the near future.
Projection — The Heart
of Miscommunication
in Relationships
CType is, in our experience,
one of the most powerful bodies of knowledge for healing,
enhancing, and deepening relationships with the most important people in our lives. However,
CType is also at the heart of
much of the miscommunication, frustration, and friction in
stressed or problematic relationships.
This occurs when a person
naturally projects his/her own
CType (ways of thinking and relating) onto those with whom he/
she is in relationship. This natural
tendency to project one’s CType
on to others is based upon the
faulty assumption that everyone
else thinks like I do. For those
who are unaware of CType, it is
rare indeed when this projection
is not a part of issues in relationships.
One of the fundamental principles in healing relationships is
becoming aware in real time of
people projecting their CTypes
on to other people, including
you and me. It is probably even
more important that we be aware
of when we are projecting our
own CType on to others, especially those closest to us.
CType Opposites
The Most Important
CType Principle
When a CType runs into trouble in life, it is because he or she
is doing too much of his/her natural CType thinking. For example, as a Scorpio CType, my life
falls apart when I do too much
of my Natural Scorpio thinking.
Linda’s life becomes stress-filled
and problematic when she does
too much of her Natural Sagittarius thinking. As with any good
thing, too much usually creates
its own set of problems. Dosage determines the difference
between medicine and poison,
yes?
The unconscious strategy for
a CType having problems is to
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1
continue to do more of what is
creating those problems. Left
unobserved, when faced with
trouble, my mind will want to
do more of the Scorpio thinking which created the problems
in the first place. Thankfully,
CTypes also provide ready solutions to our problems.
Each CType also has an opposite alternative (Opposite), which
is both opposite and complementary to its Natural. When a
CType runs into trouble in life
or relationships, the effective
choice for a new strategy to
solve the problem is to move toward its Opposite.
A CType will only move toward his or her Opposite, and
thereby evolve or grow, when
the emotional energy of an experience is high enough to act
as a catalyst for movement. It is
the emotions, emotional energy,
and an event with high emotional content, which triggers the
move toward the Opposite and
promotes personal growth.
For example, too much Scorpio thinking had me near the
breaking point in my relationship with my mother. We had
stopped speaking. The solution?
I had to move my thinking toward my Opposite, Taurus. Although difficult for me, over a
period of nine months of always
moving toward Taurus when
dealing with or thinking about
my mother, we reconciled and
became closer than ever before. Notice that this reconciliation did not require my mother
to change. It simply required a
change in my thinking. As on the
inside, so on the outside, yes?
When faced with any major
life or relationship problem,
understanding the fundamental
CType principle of moving to our
Opposites is invaluable. While
the move to our Opposites is difficult for all CTypes, this move
is an always reliable strategy for
holistic growth and solving life’s
most difficult relationship problems.
As a CType begins to embrace
change, the move to the opposite alternative becomes easier.
Once an individual understands
his or her own CType and has
practiced the move to its Opposite, this practice becomes a
powerful tool for accelerating
personal growth and addressing
relationship issues that can be
solved in no other way.
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 In healing and deepening
relationships between couples,
with family, or on the job, moving to the opposite alternative
becomes a unique and powerful success strategy that trumps,
in my experience, all others.
If practiced widely, CTypes
might well be a powerful problem solver for humanity. Used in
conjunction with other personal
and professional growth practices, CTypes are a powerful
accelerant in healing and improving relationships with the
most important people in our
lives. We must keep in mind that
everything starts with self.
Whatever relationship you
have in the outside world, good
or bad, was created first in your
mind. If you have relationship
problems, you’re doing too much
of your CType Natural. The solution? Become a master of moving
toward your CType Opposite. A
master of CTypes is a master of
relationships. A master of relationships is a master of life.

Conscious Relationships
By Leonard Jacobson
There are two kinds of relationship. The first is a dysfunctional and unconscious relationship based in the past and
future. The second is a conscious
relationship based in the present
moment.
When a relationship is based
in the past, we are looking to
our partner to fulfill needs that
were not met in childhood by
our parents. Our mother and father were not present for us in
the way we needed them to be.
As a result, we did not feel loved
and accepted in a way that made
us feel safe, and so to varying
degrees, we developed limiting
beliefs that now affect every aspect of our lives and our relationships.
These beliefs include I am not
loved, I am not good enough, I
am not accepted, There is no
one here for me, I am unworthy,
I am alone, I am abandoned, I
have to repress my feelings, I
don’t count, I can’t ask for what
I want, I have to please others,
just to name a few.
These beliefs are associated
with very painful feelings, that
we learn to repress. We then
embark upon a journey to find
someone who will be here for
us and who will meet that unfilled need to be loved, accepted
and acknowledged. The problem is that life manifests as a
reflection of our inner world, so
that we attract people into our
lives who match those limiting
beliefs.
We attract people into our
lives who are not loving or accepting, and so the pain of living
in a world where no one is truly
present with us continues. If we
attract a partner who is loving
and accepting, we cannot really
feel it or allow it in, because it
contradicts our deeper beliefs.
In an unconscious relationship, our repressed
emotions are constantly being triggered, and we project
the blame onto our
partner, when what
is really happening
is that our partner is
simply triggering feelings repressed within
us from our past.
In an unconscious
relationship, we are
lost in our story and
we are trying to get our partner
to enter our story to make
it better. Some typical issues
that arise in an unconscious relationship are blame, guilt, expectation and resentment. In an
unconscious relationship, control patterns and judgment are
often a source of conflict.
An unconscious relationship
is not necessarily a bad thing.
In fact I recommend it! It gives
us the opportunity to look into
the mirror that is the relationship, and bring consciousness
to all the unconscious aspects
of ourselves, all the unhealed
emotional wounds and all those
limiting beliefs still with us from
childhood.
This kind of relationship gives
us the opportunity to witness
certain aspects of our personality which we would prefer to
ignore, deny or project onto our
partner. It gives us the opportunity to be observant of our control patterns and judgments. How
present are you with your part-
Plant Trees!
14 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E ner? How do you express love?
Are you generous, grateful, compassionate and supportive? Are
you judgmental and controlling?
Are you filled with expectations which you do
not clearly express
and when those expectations are not
met, do you become
resentful? When you
are hurt, do you become angry or do
you withdraw? How
do you express your
anger? Are you abusive? Are you a victim? These are just
some of the issues
and questions that must be addressed and brought to consciousness if you want to move
from a dysfunctional relationship
to a conscious relationship.
In a conscious relationship,
we are fundamentally present.
We have been through a process
of healing the past. We have
released ourselves from those
limiting beliefs from childhood
and we have emptied those reservoirs of emotions which were
repressed within us. We have
embraced responsibility for ourselves at every level. We feel
whole and complete within ourselves and we do not need our
partner to complete us or make
us feel safe and secure. We no
longer need our partner to be
here for us, but rather we want
our partner to be here with us.
Just to change one simple
word from ‘for’ to ‘with’ radically transforms the relationship.
In a conscious relationship, both
parties are empowered from
within and are not seeking to
have power or control over the
other. In a conscious relationship, communication is clear
and direct and honest.
A conscious relationship does
not have to be perfect. It is OK
to make mistakes as long as both
parties to the relationship are
willing to take responsibility for
whatever is arising within them.
In fact, it is in making mistakes
or lapsing into unconsciousness
that provides us with the opportunity for greater consciousness,
provided we are willing and
able to look into the mirror that
is the relationship and to own,
acknowledge and confess any
unconscious aspect of ourselves
we see reflected there.
At the deepest level, the real
gift we bring to each other is the
gift of Presence. When you are
present you are, by your very
nature, loving, accepting, compassionate, generous, grateful
and allowing. When you are
present, you are without judgment. The more that Presence is
the foundation of your relationship, the more fulfilling, joyful
and uncomplicated it will be.
In a conscious relationship,
we relate to each other in the
moment and do not seek comfort from the idea that someone
will be there to make us feel
safe in one year or five years or
for a lifetime. In truth there is
only NOW! When we come to
terms with that simple truth, it
will open us into a life of freedom, truth and love.
A conscious relationship is a
great blessing. It provides you
with a companion with whom
you can share a loving life. An
unconscious relationship is also
a great blessing. It provides you
with a remarkable opportunity
to wake up out of your unconsciousness.

Power Over Life’s Pings
Mastering Adversity = Mastery of Life
By Kristin Andress
Whether in our personal interactions or in the workplace,
whether with spouses or our
children, our bosses or our relatives, we all experience difficulties and disappointments in life.
And while some of us have highly developed coping skills, the
stress that results from dealing
with life’s pings, the unexpected
variables, impact more than just
our jobs and personal relationships; the stress they cause can
impact our health.
Poorly managed, pings can
knock us off course, sometimes
causing anxiety, depression, and
even physical ailments. Well
managed, they become nothing
more than bumps in the road
that may cause us to detour to a
better path.
Have you ever watched a
movie that left you with a sense
of empowerment as you walked
out of the theater? One that had
you cheering the protagonist
for beating seemingly impossible odds? Most likely you have.
Moving. Inspiring. Empowering.
These movies resonate with us
because we like to see people
triumph. We truly want others
to beat the odds, whether it is
in love, sports, business, war, or
life in general.
We want happy endings. Of
course, on the road from youth
to adulthood, we learn that not
everything ends happily-everafter. We come to realize that
while we can overcome the
dragons, poisoned apples,
and evil stepmothers... we
still may not end up with a balanced life. Life, and its pings,
teaches us that.
But what life does not necessarily teach us is the skill to deal
with the setbacks we face, and
these pings are powerful forces
that interrupt our health and
wellness plans. Some pings may
be annoying ripples that cause

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 you to look at new routes to
achieve your goals, while some
may be high seas that are catastrophic, making
you hang on for dear
life.
You never know
when pings are going to hit; you need
to learn to recognize them so you
can control just how
much effect they will
have on your life and
whether that impact
will be positive or
negative.
What is important to remember is that pings — while they
can be seemingly devastating at
the time — can actually end up
benefitting us. It is how pings
are perceived and received and
then handled that makes all the
difference.
Consider the XY Factor:
X = The variables in life
Y = You, the constant
You are the Y (and the “why”)
in every situation, and if you
have a strong belief system, a
strong emotional core, you will
be able to overcome any obstacle, any variable that comes
into your life. Your belief system
equips you with the creative
ability to confront and deal with
the problems that arise.
It will arm you with the resourcefulness to face any situation — no matter how dire
— and, if necessary, chart a new
direction for the future. It will
also inspire you. It will be the
fire in your belly that will allow
you to believe in the seemingly
impossible.
It will be the energy that will
propel you through fears and
doubts. Be the constant. Be the
Y — and the “why” — at all
times and you will find that no
X can stop you. Make the conscious choice to not let the pings
rule you.
There is no way to de-ping
your life; however, there are
ways to utilize the pings to your
advantage or to get past them
when they stop you. To gain
power over the pings:
1 . R e m a i n re s i l i e n t . B e lieve in your ability
to deal with whatever comes your way.
You may have to adjust in order to handle a given situation
or circ u m s t a n c e ,
and you will need
to consider what you
need to do next. If,
however, you become a reaction to
the PING, you will
lose your power to
focus and continue.
2. Use your lifelines. These
are exactly the times when you
need others to support you.
Reach out to those you trust and
ask them for what you need.
3. Exercise your internal or
personal power. Power is “the
ability to act or produce an effect.” Your ability to overcome
obstacles is directly related to
the power of your imagination
and the strength of your belief
system. How you control your
life in tense or stressful situations, and how you intensify
that potential within you, will
determine your success in handling setbacks.
Conversely, powerlessness
comes from the feeling or belief that you have no control,
no capacity to dig deep inside
for that power to overcome setbacks. You feel weak and unable
to cope. You can’t see the possibilities or believe in a positive
outcome. If you allow that feeling of powerlessness to master
you, then you will be swallowed
whole and spit out by life. Master the pings; do not give them
power over you.
4. Stay focused on your intentions. Keep what you desire
to manifest in your life front and
center. You will need to address
head on the pings that are providing you with the reasons, explanations, and excuses for not
taking the actions needed for
you to be in a life you love.
5. Be willing to make things
happen for yourself. Be wise
enough to welcome change, take
another approach, create new
opportunities, and talk to people
who will help you through the
problem. And, when you need
to, take an SPD. What is an SPD?
It’s a Special Person Day. It can
be your way of acknowledging
that you are getting pinged.
Allow yourself time to get
angry or sad about it, and then
move on. That is the really important part to understand here
— move on. Without extenuating circumstances, you only get
24-hours for your SPD. Any more
than that and you will become
one of those people who most
likely gets on your nerves!
These variables in life, these
pings, do exist and will continually challenge you. Having
a strong core, a strong belief
system, can help you overcome
them, and help you gain control over them. Use your imagination to get through the setbacks. Do not hand your power
over to someone or something
else. Do not wallow in the misfortunes. The minute you do,
you lose. Stay focused on your
intentions, walking with the
knowledge that you will handle
any setback that comes your
way.
Bring real power into your
everyday life by refusing to be a
victim of life’s circumstances. If
you can say, “I have the power
to handle anything and everything that gets in my way of
reaching my best intention,” you
will be one step closer to managing the pings you face in life
so you can live it by your design.

Expanded awareness of ourselves and others, can mean a more real
and deep relationship, more deeply experienced, more intently savored.

Aware Relationship
T
By Jesse Wolf Hardin
he degree of deep,
healthy relationship
with anybody — or
with any thing, for that
matter — directly correlates to our degree of awareness: the extent to which we
truly notice and understand
the larger world beyond the
boundaries of our skin. Not
only our responsibilities but
relationships, rewards and delights come alive... for those
of us most aware of life.
To begin with, the more aspects, characteristics and revealing stories that we know about
someone, the more we may find
to appreciate about them.
Some of the finest of qualities are not obvious but subtle,
underplayed or concealed. Likewise, the more aware that we
are of their complexities, fears
and motivations, even the past
incidents and other factors that
helped form their character and
determine behavior, the better
we can understand, estimate and
appropriately respond to any
traits of theirs that we might find
unpleasant or unacceptable.
The problem is that in the vast
majority of modern civilized relationships, exchanges and inter-
actions are often either narrow
in scope or superficial in content, all too many times insincere or contrived, with minimal
conscious awareness involved in
the relating.
This is partly a reflection of
a natural human desire to comfort each other with interchange,
irrespective of meaning, engendering the “small talk” that can
help us feel part of a group and
less alone. When acquaintances
ask us how we are doing, they
are usually looking for a stock
reply that’s as positive as it is
brief, rather than a discomforting sharing of how we really
feel, what has been hurting or
troubling us, the challenges we
face or dreams we have yet to
fulfill.
In addition to not wanting to
make others uneasy, we humans
also want to be liked, which is
yet another reason why we may
not only narrowly limit and carefully censor any topics of conversation, but also “put on our
best face” in any direct interactions.
And yet, the most healthy, let
alone deeply meaningful relationships, are predicated on our
having a broad awareness and
16 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E substantial understanding of
what is real. To the extent that
we relate to the edited self that
someone projects or the illusion
and “positive spin” that we project on them, the interactions
are unreal as well, the content
of any communication insubstantial or untrustworthy, and
the value of any commitments
become suspect.
With sufficient determination,
practice and skill, we can ensure that at least on party in any
relationship is working to see
through illusion and pretense,
to weigh the value of content
and speak or act deliberately,
with the potential results, benefits and consequences in mind:
ourselves.
From that point, we can influence the course and therefore
the ramifications of conversation and relationship, the power
of friendships, the effectiveness
of partnerships and alliances,
and the substance, meaningfulness and even longevity of love
affairs and marriages.
The work starts not so much
with heightened awareness of
others, or even of context, environs or possible outcomes,
but with advanced conscious
awareness of our own personal
feelings, perspective, needs, motivations, presentation and communication.
How often do we associate
with others, converse without
them, work with them, maybe
even live with them, without being consistently conscious of our
emotional needs and moods, of
our immediate hopes and greater
aims, why we are investing time
in certain involvements, social
arrangements or even subjects
of conversation?
Or without being conscious
of our body language, facial expressions, and the effects that
these things have on the composure and impressions of others.
What we teach in Anima, is
that every moment is a decisive moment — and most of the
things that we both do and don’t
do, are conscious decisions.
One of the defining traits for not
only Anima practitioners but the
more adept of shamans, artists
and activists, medicine women
and healers, is highly developed
awareness.
The most impressive of our
other abilities can only serve us
or our purpose well when we are
totally aware, of the full extent of
our abilities as well as any possible limitations, of the present
situation and context, of the intentions of others... and of the
intentional as well as unintended effects of our own actions.
It is then that we are not only
most response-able, but most
able to take in the rewards of
sensation and meaning, depth
and delight.
A practitioner combines this
heightened presence with purposeful action and considered
response, in order to help shape
events and thus consciously cocreate our world. Only the intensely aware can make the best
choices.... and for the Anima
practitioner, at least, every single
act — no matter how large or
small — is a conscious choice.
The recommended ideal order for completing Anima lifeways courses, is to start with the
Practitioner’s Journey (orientation, language and exploration),
Presence (so we can be wholly
here for all that follows), Awakeness (embodiment and heightening our bodily senses), and
then Awareness (learning to be
ever more intensely conscious of
things beyond the range of our
senses).
The information in courses
like Sense of Place, the Foundations of Western Herbalism and
Mission & Purpose, is best fathomed and most effectively applied when we are maximally,
not nominally, aware.
There is likely no one who
couldn’t benefit from an intense,
ongoing awareness practice,
utilizing the insights and examples afforded us by the nature
world, and perhaps the tools for
awareness that some schools
and traditions provide. And relationships, of any kind, can be
made more real, substantial, purposeful and usually satisfying,
by doing the moment-to-moment work of being aware and
going deep. By paying more attention the them, ourselves and
our world... anytime we’re not
asleep.
To close, I will leave you with
the gift of some simple Anima
awareness exercises to try:
• Attention is a gift we give
to ourselves, whenever we pay
close attention to the people
and things around us. When
walking down the sidewalk, notice what grass or plants grow to
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1
either side, the designs where
the cement has cracked, the
dandelions that poke their heads
up through them, the sounds of
not only singing birds but vehicles driving by even if you find it
unpleasant. The anchoring touch
of a mother when we feel unmoored, the signature scent of
the neck of a lover.
• Look closely at all people
and things, arrangements and associations, alliances and agreements... while keeping in mind
that people and things, interactions and relationships are never
solely as they appear.
• Notice and explore how
friends and spouse look, dress,
and carry themselves one hour
to the next, the communicative
furrowing of a brow and telltale
flushing of the skin, the slow
changes that come with age
and the form and gestures of
beauty that are ageless. Notice
how they act and respond, what
contributes to their pleasure
and fulfillment or increases their
dissatisfaction, when their spirits are either neglected or fed,
when they are keeping something to themselves as well as
what they may be trying to tell
us.
• What do their body postures communicate, and do they
tell a different story than the person’s facial expressions? Based
on their clothes, hair and posture, what do they want us to
think about them, and what do
they think about themselves?
Are their energies focused inward uncertainly, or do they
project their energies? If they
are projecting their energy and
will, what is it that they are trying to effect, direct, change or
create? Try to identify the source
of fear in the room and in each
person you relate to, as well as
the sources of giftings and love.
• Notice what is hard about
every worthwhile relationship,
and deliberately get stronger
from it. Notice what takes skill,
and learn from it. Notice the benefits of commitments, and consciously commit to the healthful
and helpful, whole and right.
• Notice what makes you feel
either comfortable or uncomfortable in your relationships,
while keeping in mind the ways
in which comfort can sometimes
be the greater disadvantage.
• Notice the effect you have
on the people you are in relationship with. What impact does
your attitude or example, your
attention or neglect, your ideas
and acts have on the people
you come into contact with, are
they better informed, affirmed,
inspired or enabled? How are
the ways that you live and act
impacting your many various
relationships, in the moment
and after the fact?
• Which friends, lovers, ideas,
conversations, activities, types
of entertainment, or personal
habits seem to obstruct your intentions, lessening or preventing
the desired results? Which enable or further your intentions,
and how?
• Notice not just what it is
about the people in your life that
disturbs you, but also that which
pleasures or calms, inspires action, stirs the heart or soothes
the spirit.
• At the end of each day, try
to remember the details of everything that happened in your
process of relating, and write
the details down in an aware-
ness journal. Record not only
what you noticed, but how you
responded... and what effects or
results you inevitably brought
about.

Intimate Communication — 9 Key Steps
By David Gersten
More than half of the marriages in America end in divorce.
When the magic (and honeymoon biology) wears off, you
may not yet have the tools for
communication that unites and
heals.
There are a variety of reasons
for difficulties in communication: 1) The breakdown of the
nuclear family has left many without positive images or experiences of intimate communication, 2) Marital role expectations
have changed over the last 40
years, leaving many confused,
and 3) Sometimes there is a great
inequality regarding what each
brings to the relationship, and
if there are huge gaps in interests, spirituality, nutrition, hobbies, music, sexuality (etc), much
more work needs to go into that
relationship.
When people fall in love,
their partner appears close to
perfect, but “being in love” is a
mental/emotional state that lasts
12 to 18 months. When the initial chemistry changes, suddenly
we see our partner’s flaws, which
can throw communication into
a tailspin.
Love is blind, and when the
blinders come off, people need
tools to deal with flaws, misconceptions, mismatches, and
poor communication. This is the
time for couples to really learn
to love. This article focuses on
learning to communicate in a
way that heals and unites. Here
are 9 key steps for intimate communication.
1. Startup. Identify whether
or not you create a “fast startup”
in expressing things that are difficult to say. If you express hurt
or anger in a loud and heated
way, the conversation will rapidly accelerate and turn into an
argument. If your style
is a fast startup, take a
few deep breaths before “starting a fire.”
2. Develop Ground
R u l e s f o r h ow yo u
communicate strong
emotions. Here is a
good way to start. Tell
your partner there is
something you’d like
to talk about, and ask,
“Is this a good time?”
If it’s not, agree on a time that’s
good for both of you . . . in the
near future. Make yourselves
comfortable. Sit on a comfortable couch and make physical
contact. Hold hands. Make eye
contact.
3. How Severe Is The Problem? Before talking, ask yourself
how serious your concern is on
a scale of 1-10. If you can say
to your partner, “This issue is
a 3,” s/he will instantly feel relief. If the issue is a 7-10, share
that, and then ask your partner if
they’d like a minute to get centered. Consider how much easier
it is to hear something painful
when you’ve taken a minute to
get centered compared to when
you are blind-sided by hot, raw
emotion.
4. Express Yourself. You may
feel mad, glad, sad, or scared
(the 4 core emotions) and may
have concluded that the prince
or princess you married has an
evil twin living inside. Here is
how to convey what you need
to. Take responsibility for how
you feel. If you say, “You really
pissed me off with that absurd
comment,” you are conveying
the message that your feelings
are your partner’s responsibility.
But, you are responsible for how you respond to anything
Here is a healthy
w ay t o c o m m u n i cate distress, “When
you said or did x, y,
and z, it caught me
off guard. At first I
was scared, and I felt
my gut tighten up. I
was shaking. Pretty
quickly fear turned
to anger. I feel that anger right
now. My heart’s pounding and
my palms are sweaty.”
5. Accept What IS. You are
both learning to accept what
“is” right now. Don’t enter a
conversation with the idea that
you’re going to change the other
person, and don’t make assumptions about your partner’s motivations. He or she will always
have a good reason for why they
did what they did. Avoid “proving that you are right and s/he
is wrong.” Remember that the
two of you are striving to solve
a problem together...as a team.
6. Listen. After you’ve shared
your concern, you need to listen.
Be eager to discover their motivation and what they thought
they said or did, because what
you think motivated your partner
is almost never true. Many of us
feel the urge to jump in and respond quickly. Now is the time
to sit back and listen with an
open mind, without judgment.
Real listening is powerful and
lets your partner know that it’s
safe to speak their mind.
7. Be Open and Vulnerable.

When you are vulnerable, you’re
willing to embrace uncertainty. And it means that you may
hear something that is difficult
to hear. Listen. And after all the
words have been spoken, there
may arise a period of silence.
Practice being okay with silence.
It’s normal and healthy.
8. Moving to Resolution. Moving from fear and anger back to
love is great, but don’t move to
the bedroom too quickly if this is
a romantic relationship. As your
conversation is approaching closure, you may feel the urge to
quickly hug and kiss your partner. Slow down. At this point,
hold hands with intention and
love. Move slowly, letting your
hearts soften.
9. Closure. Ask if there is anything else your partner wants
to say. Likewise, ask yourself if
there is anything else you need
to say. Bring the conversation to
an end in a loving way. In your
“opening comments” you may
have said things that felt hurtful
to your partner. End the conversation with words of appreciation
and gratitude. You’ve survived a
conversation that used to be a
battle, and now you are truly a
healthier couple.
By practicing these 9 steps,
you will see your partner with
loving eyes, instead of repeatedly asking yourself, “How did
my prince/princess turn into a
frog?”

The Inner Eye: Balance in A Changing World
By Peggy Kornegger
All thoughts are sacred energy.
When you change the way you
look at the world, everything
you look at changes.
— Nana Mercedes Barrios
Longfellow, Maya Mam elder
So many spiritual traditions
teach that abundance is not
about money or material goods;
it is a way of seeing the world.
Is the glass half-empty or halffull? We know the preferred answer, but do we actually live
it? In these turbulent times of
economic uncertainty and huge
planetary changes, is it possible
for us to recognize that the presence of abundance is dependent
on how we perceive events in
our lives?
Those who have recently lost
a job or savings might find this
idea unbelievable. Yet it touches on some universal truths that
humans throughout history have
uncovered beneath the hard
rocks of life’s lessons. Sometimes
when we lose greatly, we discover something even greater: the
generosity of strangers, the love
of friends and family, or connection to a spiritual force beyond
our own lives.
I am no stranger to loss myself, and perhaps it has been
those painful experiences that
have caused me to search for
a higher meaning in the universe. Through the teachings of
a variety of individuals in many
spiritual traditions, I have found
solace and balance. It is not magic. It is a practice, an intention.
I take a deep breath and remind myself of what I have to
be grateful for (the old litany of
“counting your blessings”) or
that the world holds incredible
beauty, no matter how dire the
circumstances. I take a walk in
a park or sanctuary to immerse
myself in Nature. I read poetry
or talk with friends. I
play music and sing.
Any or all of these
help me to remember the abundance
in my life, to recenter and rebalance in
a world that is radically changing on a
daily basis. Of course,
daily change means
daily practice, daily
recentering. Finding
hope over and over
again. I believe this is the greatest challenge we face as human
beings on planet Earth at this
time: to continue believing that
a peaceful, loving world is possible and that we as individuals
can do something to make that
happen.
That love is more powerful
than fear or hatred is the inner
core belief that will help us stay
balanced as we live through the
transition from one world age
to another. The much-discussed
prophesied year 2012 is not one
date on the calendar; it is a cosmic shift, a time of tremendous
possibility.
We hold the keys to transformation within us, literally in
our genes. All of us were born
to be here at this time, to play
our own individual roles in how
the planet evolves. And we don’t
need an external GPS system to
guide us. It is inner guidance,
inner intent, which will help us
to remain balanced and positively focused.
We each have an inner eye
(some call it intuition, higher
self, or cosmic connection) that,
if strengthened through practice, can be our greatest support
during challenging
times. M e d i t a t i o n ,
yoga, conscious
breathing, visualization, or energy
work all make our
inner eye grow stronger. Participating in
these practices in the
company of others
strengthens it even
more and opens our
hearts as well. And
the collective energy that we create together can
shape our lives and our world.
Throughout the world, groups
of all kinds participate in collective visualizations, prayers, or
meditations, which many believe
have a measurable effect. Just as
we as individuals are affected by
one another’s feelings, the living Earth responds to our mass
emotions. If those emotions are
positive, if our hearts are open
and loving, and our inner eye focuses on the beauty that already
exists, then the possibilities for
global transformation are exponential.
When we share the abundance in our lives with others
— whether in physical, emotional, or spiritual ways — we
can co-create communities of
concerned individuals who continually support and assist one
another.
Each morning, as part of my
meditation and yoga practice, I
send light and love to the Earth
and all beings. With my inner
eye, I visualize myself as part
of the web of life on a beautiful
blue planet, mutual caring and
compassion swirling through
the intricate fibers of our connections. There is no center to
this web, yet just envisioning it
recenters me. My day begins on
a positive note, spirit and body
attuned, heart open.
I am sustained and uplifted
by the growing numbers of individuals and groups who hold
to a vision of a better world and
speak out and work for it. Their
voices and actions remind me
of the great amount of positive
human energy that exists on
this planet. Yes, there is still war,
hatred, and violence, but there
are also rising waves of kindness, generosity, compassion,
and love.
People are gradually recognizing that each thought, feeling,
and action impacts the universe
within and around us. This is
truly “sacred energy.” We are all
connected — every stone, every
flower, every star, every heart.
Seeing the wonders of the
world in the present moment,
and envisioning even more in
the future is a true gratitude practice. An inner sense of abundance uplifts the seer and the
seen with the light of hope. I
hold to this practice, this inner
vision, to help me create internal
and external balance, moment to
moment, in this transitional time
of extraordinary change.

Top 10 Natural Remedies
for Women’s Health
By David Wolfe
It was the best of times, it was
the worst of times. Charles Dickens got it right with the opening
line of A Tale of Two Cities. That
statement applies as much today
as it ever has. With the increasing
prevalence of dangerous health
conditions, grocery stores selling
the worst “food” items in history,
and an environment laden with
toxins and chemicals (even radioactive fallout), it’s a wonder
we’ve gotten this far.
Yet, the flip side of these challenges is that now we also have
access to the best living foods,
superfoods, superherbs and supplements available in our planet’s history. We are beginning to
unravel the secrets of detoxification, herbalism and superfood
nutrition.
In spite of the environmental
and societal toxicity we all face,
we can now enjoy an exceptional level of health by making improved choices in what we put
into our bodies.
Both my parents were in the
medical field and I grew up inside a doctor’s office. My mom
always reminded me, “If you
lose your health, you have lost
everything.” Because of that
gentle reminder being embedded into my consciousness, I’ve
literally spent the last 22 years
of my life on the cutting edge of
what’s possible via supplements,
herbalism, food, superfoods, and
positive thinking without resorting to addictive chemical drugs
and pharmaceuticals.
I have found that
women in particular
have specific health
requirements that
can be addressed
nutritionally. If we
look to the oldest
healing systems in
the world, Ayurveda
and Chinese medicine, there are literally dozens of superfoods and superherbs that have been used for
centuries and withstood the test
of time. There is so much available and yet we don’t need to
know everything. If we focus our
attention on only the top, most
powerful items from time-proven
traditions, we can go a long way
in creating and maintaining our
health.
My top 10 list of natural remedies for women includes something for everyone. Who does
not know someone close to us,
if not ourselves, who struggles
with one of the following health
challenges: heart disease, cancer, obesity, hormone imbalances, and sleep or mood disorders?
The root causes of illnesses may
be addressed (in part) by a holistic nutrition strategy allowing
the body to correct itself.

20 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E Of course it is important for
anyone with a health concern to
get appropriate advice from a qualified
health professional
who covers mental and emotional
areas of health. Yet
nutrition must be
addressed. “You are
what you eat” is not
going away any time
soon. We must be
responsible for our
own nutritional wellbeing.
Here are my current top 10 picks for natural
remedies for women. Try them
out and see how they work for
you!
1. Medicinal Mushrooms.
This is one of my favorite cateegories, not just for women,
but for everyone. High in super
immune-enhancing polysaccharides such as beta glucans,
medicinal mushrooms are one
of the most intelligent adaptogenic herbs/superfoods on the
planet.
Reishi mushroom, the “mushroom of immortality,” is an immune-system nutrient suitable
for nearly anyone to take, even
children. Reishi is the most wellstudied herb in the history of
the world. Reishi has antioxidant properties that protect the
body from radiation and free
radicals. It inhibits bacteria, viruses, treats tumors and its adaptogenic quality protects the body
against stress. It also treats heart
disease and high blood pressure.
2 . O m e g a - 3 Fa t t y A c i d s .
These are especially important
for women because they perform
a number of functions in the
body from balancing hormones
to improving skin and hair.
In general, most diets are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids
and have excessive omega-6
fatty acids. Having an excess
of omega-6 fatty acids and rancid trans-fatty acids, such as are
commonly found in processed
foods, leads to an inflammato-
ry response in the body, which
can develop into a contributing
factor in cardiovascular disease,
immunity challenges and neurological problems.
The best way to get the right
kind of fatty acids is to consume
foods containing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). These are
commonly found in foods like
microalgaes, such as chlorella, marine phytoplankton, and
seeds like hempseed, chia and
flax. For non-vegetarians, fish oil
is an excellent source of DHA.
3. B-Vitamins are essential,
especially vitamin B-6, B-9 and
B-12. B vitamins are highly correlated with our ability to handle
stress. B-12 gets used up in our
body quickly just by the stresses
and toxicity found in our environment on a daily basis. B-12 is
known to deactivate toxic homocysteine found in our blood.
Elevated homocysteine levels correlate directly with our
chances of having a heart attack.
The best form to take is methylcobalamin, which has the added
benefit of contributing a methyl
group that breaks down carcinogenic “bad” estrogen in the
system and helps rebalance hormones in women. Vitamin B-6
and B-9 also contribute methyl
groups to our liver, helping to
break down “bad” estrogen.
4. Maca. A staple in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of
years, this adaptogenic superfood increases energy, endurance, strength and libido. Dried
maca powder contains more than
10% protein, nearly 20 amino
acids, and 7 essential amino
acids. It offers incredible hormone regulation from the top
down, supporting the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the
thyroid, and the adrenals. Maca
is also rich in B Vitamins.
5. Probiotics. It’s very important that we build and maintain a healthy ecosystem in our
body. Donna Gates, the bestselling author of The Body Ecology Diet, advocates consuming
a combination of good-quality
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1
probiotics as well as cultured
and fermented foods like coconut water kefir, while reducing
sugar intake. This will lead to enhanced immunity as the beneficial bacteria in your body work
as part of the immune system.
6. Astragalus. This herb has
been used in Traditional Chinese
medicine for thousands of years.
Astragalus has antioxidants that
protects the cell against damage
caused by free radicals, and is
used to protect and support the
body’s immune system, including improving the power of the
lungs. Some astragalus samples
contain TA-65, the most powerful anti-aging compound ever
discovered.
7. Goji Berries (Lycium). Used
in traditional Chinese medicine
for over 5,000 years, goji berries are regarded as a longevity,
strength-building, and potency
food of the highest order.
This superfood contains 18
kinds of amino acids, all 8 essential amino acids, up to 21 trace
minerals, high amounts of antioxidants, iron, polysaccharides, B
and E vitamins, and many other
nutrients. They are very high in
antioxidants, especially eyesightimproving zeaxanthin. Goji berries have always been associated
with longevity and beauty.
8. Cacao (Raw Chocolate).
The seed/nut of a fruit of an Amazonian tree, cacao is the highest
antioxidant food on the planet,
the #1 source of magnesium,
iron, chromium, manganese and
is also extremely high in PEA.
Cacao’s theobromine adds cardiovascular support.
Raw chocolate balances the
brain chemistry, builds strong
bones, is a natural aphrodisiac,
and elevates your mood and energy by increasing serotonin and
other positive brain chemicals.
Women have long known that
chocolate makes them feel good.
We can give our operating system an upgrade with raw chocolate to maximize goodness and
at the same time eliminate inferior processed roasted chocolate
products altogether.
9. Aloe Vera. The gel of raw
aloe vera contains vitamins A, C,
and E, the minerals sulfur, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium,
and chromium, as well as antioxidants, fiber, amino acids, enzymes, sterols, lignans, and most
importantly, polysaccharides.
The polysaccharides in aloe vera
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 have a particular lubricating
effect on the joints, brain, nervous system and the skin. They
also have immuno-modulating
effects, allowing the body to
fight back chronic viral, nanobacterial and fungal infections.
Aloe vera is a crucial part of
any weight loss and fitness program as it has been shown that
when you ingest aloe, you can
lose weight and gain lean muscle mass. Aloe vera is a beauty
food.
10. Grounding. Walking barefoot on the Earth (grass, sand,
soil, forest floor, etc.) can help
ameliorate the constant irritation caused by electromagnetic
frequencies (EMFs) and other
types of radiation on our systems from household appliances, cell phones, computers and
Wi-Fi. By getting outside, barefoot, and touching the Earth, we
are allowing the massive negatively-charged electrical field of
the Earth to push off static electricity fields and positive charge
from our body.
The Earth transfers free electricity (electrons) from itself to
us. This “grounding effect” gives
us access to one of the most
potent antioxidants we know of
— the free electrons that accumulate on the surface of the planet. This breakthrough grounding
research has finally been collected and collated in a new book
called Earthing by Clint Ober.

Five Simple Steps to Ultimate
Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Fitness
A Formula for Life Transformation
(Part 3)
By Dr. Juliet Tien (Dr. J), D. N. Sc.
This article has three parts.
Part 1 addresses how you can
take: Step 1 to educate yourself, and Step 2 to remove
toxins in your body. Part 2
discusses how you can take:
Step 3 to regenerate your
glands and organs, and Step 4
to cleanse your mental toxins.
Part 3 explains how you can
take Step 5 to regenerate your
physical and mental metabolic
functions.
Step 5. Regenerate Your
Physical and Mental
Metabolic Functions
If you have taken Steps 1
through 4, you will find that
you are becoming a different
person — a person who has
control over your life, instead
of being controlled by your life
events, whatever they may be.
Now, there is another aspect of
your health I must address, and
that is your metabolic function.
I mean both your Physical and
Mental Metabolism.
You probably understand
physical metabolism. To use
plain language, physical metabolism is the speed at which
your body processes food,
turns the food into fuel (calories), and burns calories to
turn them into useful energy.
“What is mental metabolism?”
you ask. Mental metabolism is
the speed at which your mind
processes emotions (wheth-
er positive or negative), and
turns them into useful mental
energy, so that you can be the
best you can be!
Given above definitions, how would
you rate your physical and mental metabolism. Great,
good, fair, poor, or
I don’t know. Any
room for improvement. Are you willing and ready to take
one more step to
achieve your optimal health.
Read on, so you can make an
informed decision.
Now, it’s time for questionsand-answers again. Remember,
be honest with yourself.
* Are you sick and tired of
your weight yo-yos.
* Are you frustrated and disgusted by your uncontrollable
emotional eating.
* D o yo u f e e l guilty when
you eat “comfort food”.
* Do you feel sleepy and
need to take a nap after you
eat?
* Do you feel “innocent”
because you gain weight no
matter how little you eat?
* Do you eat until your jaw
and stomach hurt, even though
you are not hungry.
If any of the above applies
to you, then you need to consider Step 5: The Comprehensive Weight Control System.

22 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E In Step 5, you combine Steps
1 through 4, plus you take potent weight control herbal formulas to boost your
metabolism. A good
weight control system should have the
following three functions:
1) Curbs your appetite by providing
you with high quality nutrients so that
your body is “satisfied” and feels no
need for sugary, fatty or salty
foods.
2) Balances blood sugar,
blood pressure and cholesterol, so that your body is harmonized.
3) Burns excess fat in your
body and turns it into useful
and productive energy.
Now that I have addressed
the physical aspect of your
weight control “journey,” let’s
look at the emotional (mental)
aspect of it. An overweight
condition is a symbol of protection. When situations in
your life trigger your sense
of insecurity, you automatically (and unconsciously) try
to protect yourself with extra
weight.
This is very common with
p e o p l e who were sexually,
physically, or emotionally
abused in the earlier parts of
their lives (such as childhood
or early adulthood). If you play
ostrich by burying your head
in the sand, you will experience weight yo-yos no matter
how many weight control programs you have tried.
I know it is not easy for you
to admit that you are carrying
some emotional baggage. I
fully understand because I‘ve
been there. However, once
you acknowledge that you
need guidance and support,
the journey is actually easier
than you think! Again, traditional psychotherapy does not
work if your weight problem
is associated with yeast and
parasitic infections, and deeprooted emotional and spiritual
conflicts. You need spiritual
counseling.
The goal of spiritual counseling is to help you understand,
accept, forgive and release
whatever emotional issues are
“eating you.” When you reach
a state of peace and love for
yourself and with others, the
need to stuff yourself with food
for protection or comfort will
not exist.
The five steps I’ve described
so far have been responsible
for my physical, mental and
spiritual fitness for over 30
years. You, too, can achieve the
same if you take those steps.
One Thousand miles begins
with the first step. One important thing for you to remember
is that taking any step is better
than taking no step.
Once you begin to take the
first and the following steps,
your direction in life will become clearer. Soon, you will
realize that suffering is simply an opportunity for you to
learn, grow and expand. We
were all born with a unique
mission. Perhaps your mission
is to learn to set yourself free,
and then teach others to do
the same.

Co-create & Live in Ayni
By Isabella Stoloff, Shaman-Teacher-Spiritual Guide
The Qero are an indigenous
group of people who live in the
Andes Mountains. I have had the
privilege of working with and
learning from these amazing
people as well as receiving ancient medicine rites from them
on sacred sites.
A beautiful concept of the Qero,
which I brought back
from my many journeys to Peru, is Ayni.
Ayni is a Quechuan
word meaning reciprocity, the act of giving and receiving. It is a word one hears
when Peruvian villagers are
working to help their neighbors
build, or plant crops.
The Qero know the importance of being in right relationship with each other, and the
planet. It is a concept that I bring
into my daily life. The Qero honor the mountains, oceans, animal kingdom and plant world,
the seen and unseen. Offering
their prayers to the Universe is
a daily ritual.
Another concept I have connected with is to follow the
cycles of the moon. I honor
the full moon and new moon
with fire ceremony and Despachos. A Despacho is a Peruvian
prayer bundle used for a variety
of reasons. The one I use during a new moon, or anytime I
want to give thanks, is called an
Ayni Despacho. This particular
Despacho is filled with grains,
flowers, and candy for the Gods
to feast upon. They are meant
to honor the earth and show
our deep gratitude at a cellular
level. Despachos and fire ceremonies help create
Ayni in the community, and in our souls.
During a full moon
fire ceremony we’re
able to transform
what no longer serves
us by giving it to the
fire. We release our
ch a l l e n g e s a s t h e y
arise and are able to
shift our perceptions quickly.
We learn how to take things to
a mythic level and see our lives
as stories, stories to which we
no longer need to be attached.
As I learned and taught these
concepts, my clients and I grew
together and our lives began
to change.
It is important for each and
every one of us to find our own
way of honoring one another.
We are all interconnected and
on the planet at this time to
remember our divine nature,
our true selves. When we honor
each other and ourselves we will
find it easier to co-create a magnificent world, one where Ayni
becomes a way of life.
A fine example of Ayni recently happened when a hummingbird was hanging out in
the back-yard of the Orange
County Healing Center. He had
been asking me to fill his hummingbird feeder and when I got
too busy he flew in front of my
clients to remind me. Finally, I
made the sugar-water mixture
and it was not quite right. He let
me know by hovering near the
window facing the back yard.
I finally made the mixture
perfectly and watched as he
drank. Then I walked around to
another room and sat down.
As I did, I looked to my left and
there he was hovering outside,
thanking me. I could actually
hear him. This hummingbird
had created a relationship with
me, and I with him. He was asking me to remember the sweetness of life, to pay attention.
My hummingbird is here to
remind me of the work I am doing and the love that is growing. The love that reminds me I
am a co-creator in the universe.
The love I see in myself, I can
also see in the hummingbird.
I see it in every living thing.
Connect to your inner wisdom by finding a ceremony to
partake in, or create one of your
own. Light a candle and set
out some flowers. Honor yourself for all you do. Now is the
time for deep remembering. It
is time to tune into who we
really are. By seeing our divine
essence in another’s eyes and
learning how to give and receive, we will create lasting
relationships filled with light
and love.
Tuning into and living in the
molecule of the moment is what
we all strive for. Ceremony is one
way of doing this. I have tuned
into the moment and found myself in the now. I feel everyone
can do this. Right here, right
now, remember who you are.
Tune into your divine self and
love like you have never loved
before. The world is waiting.

Unifying Mayan, Egyptian,
and Tibetan Voices
Universal Truths Revealed
(Part One)
By Sri Ram Kaa & Kira Raa
Welcome! You are choosing
to read this article, right now,
because deep within, at the core
of your essence, the universal
truths are preparing themselves
to be revealed through you…
Again!
As we soar toward the heightened connections that are upon
humanity, whether it is cosmically, spiritually, technologically or beyond, we are all at THE
threshold of divine re-unification.
This one fact, the momentum
and energy of re-unification, has
become a distorted frequency,
subject to a myriad of interpretations, messages, prophecies,
and confusion. Yet, deep within this thunderous storm, like a
small child crying for attention,
is a unifying voice.
It is the quest for the rediscovery of this unifying voice
that has propelled us all to this
moment and the dialogue is
brisk and emotions are high.
There is a marked increase in
blog posts, news reports and
“opinion.” Does all this chatter
serve us? And if it does, how can
we as beings of core love and
light, know our truth? How can
we discern which energetic frequency to tune into?
What if we simply relaxed
into the spacious recognition
that as we have traveled many
lifetimes on this specific planet,
we have left ourselves markers
along the way? The great texts
that have survived on our planet
all point us to the recognition
that within humanity’s extensive journey on Gaia, advanced
wisdom-filled civilizations have
thrived and “mysteriously” perished. Great upswells of knowledge and luminescent presence
have left their markers for us to
discover as we, ourselves, spiritually mature.
If we can allow ourselves to
breathe and accept that our for-
mer incarnations had the premonition of this moment in history, would it be so far fetched
to recognize that we would have
placed “evidence” of who we
are as a means of reassurance to
those who would
awaken within a
world of great chaos and amnesia?
Perhaps within our DNA is the
wake-up code that
automatically ignites when the
cosmic alignments
trigger them.
Why has it just
been THIS YEAR,
THIS MOMENT
when we discover that Egypt has
set the bar for non-violent revolt
a n d e m b ra c i n g a p a ra d i g m
shift? Why have other countries
with-in the same location been
unable to do the same?
Why has the Dalai Lama suddenly requested to be removed
as the political leader of the
Tibetans? Why is the Mayan Calendar suddenly a household
name? And, could these three
energies, (Egypt, Tibet and the
Maya), actually be related?
Deep within the energy of
re-unification is the core molecule of light that is seeded within all beings of love. Through the
millennia of soul expansion on
this particular planet we have
allowed ourselves the freedom
of “Allness” to create and experience EVERYTHING without
limits.
This has led to an extraordinary experience of energy that
could not be planned, could not
be pre-conceived and in its highest form, completely supports
free will. Yet, within our experience without limits, the Allness
became its own experience and
through that energy, we forgot
ourselves… again… and again.
Yes, we literally created our
24 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E own “Inception” moment. Is it
any surprise why this theme is
being shared with the public…
right now?
In the middle part of the last
century, China decided that the
Ti b e t a n c u l t u r e
was in conflict
with their vision
of the future.
And yet, with
the extreme eradication of this secluded country,
the world became
aware of a spiritual experience that
without the Chinese intervention
may not have ever
spread so freely around the
globe.
Without allowing yourself any
judgments of the events that
created the displacement of the
Tibetans, can you see the greater
expansion of energy that was released because of it?
Similarly, at the same time
pyramids of Egypt were being
activated, and Pharaohs were
creating great civilizations, so
the Mayan Mystics were on the
other side of the “known world,”
creating pyramids, charting the
stars and creating in stone the
significant records that were
necessary to survive thousands
of years into the future.
All of these cultures recognized our connection with the
cosmos and all of them saw the
great need to preserve records
in a form that could be understood by the awake. And, they
also saw a need to “code” their
records to prevent them from
being misinterpreted by those
who were not awake.
As we are all aware, history
unfolded, wars ensued, the Maya
were slaughtered and forced to
convert to Christianity or die.
The ancient Egyptian religions
were discredited and the Tibet-
ans eventually run out of their
homelands.
The presence of the Mayan
calendar in and of itself is a
miracle. The numerous carefully-crafted codex’s that foretold
the great cycles of the ages and
the origins of our birth were
all destroyed at the hands of
well- meaning missionaries: they
sought to keep the heathens out
of hell!
A n d y e t , t h e calendar is
here, the Tibetan book of the
dead is here, the Egyptian Records have been re-discovered
and t h e r e i s a P R O FOUND
LINK between all three.
What if these are all the same
people… literally?
What if that proof exists and
has been carefully guarded and
preserved for the moment of reunification?
What if that moment is now?
What does this mean for humanity?
Living in Guatemala, we are
honored to share sacred time
with the elders who have not
yet revealed themselves to the
world, these links have revealed
themselves. They are powerful links to the markers that we
all left for ourselves, and with
these links we discover the truth
within.
We’re able to break free from
the loud clamor that is upon
us all. There is a jockeying for
power and attention that is being
woven into the 2012 parade of
information. Perhaps if you left
yourself a message eons ago,
your soul’s wisdom is ready to
claim it. Would you know it if
you saw it? Now is a good time
to cultivate the discernment between truth and sensationalism
for the sake of ratings.
There is a message coming
from the Egyptian people, right
now, that they themselves may
not even be fully aware of, yet
are sending, right on time. There
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1
is a message coming from the
Mayan calendar, and yet it is not
for a scholar to interpret (which
is why they are all arguing with
each other), and there is a message coming from the Tibetan
people through the Dalai Lama.
These messages will save our
world, if we let them and they
were put in place eons ago!
Next month we will reveal these
messages, and invite you to put
them into practice into your
own life. We are at the moment
of re-unification, and only you
can bring yourself to that magic
point. Are you ready?

By Joseph Costa, PhD
I a m a s k e d t h e wh a t a n d
where of the Akashic Records.
What do the records consist
of, what is the process of getting there and who is
in charge of letting you
in? The Akashic Records are in the Collective Consciousness. The
contents are the same,
but it is organized, like
a library.
Collective
Consciousness
The Collective Con sciousness of all human
beings of Earth — that would be
all the thinking done by the human beings of the Planet stored
in a field (let us say of thought
particles) used by anyone and all
of human kind. This Collective
Consciousness of all on Earth
since Earth’s beginning, floats in
a sea of used thought particles
permeating the Planet Earth as
thoughts or thinking — a living
history of all mankind you can
say. It surrounds and permeates
the Earth like a vast vague field
of thoughts.
What is called the Collective
Consciousness of the human
being is the psychic state, or
non-matter state. This state reflects as non-material, however,
it has bearing on what we call
our material life. When transferring from one state to the next
— from non-material to material — we influence the material
state psychically. This explains
how one can be psychic in ability and, as consequence, affect
and change a material state.
Karma
Each individual has created
their history which automatically lies in the Collect ive C o n s c i o u s n e s s
waiting to be accessed. Karma is the
natural formula that
d e t e r m i n e s t h e essence and meaning of
information from the
Collective Consciousness.
You can erase negative karma from the
Collective Consciousness by
substituting truth for what has
been recorded as negative karma. This must be done through
the heart and not just the brain
to be effective.
Akashic Records
There is a teaching that all one
thinks, does and portends with
one’s way of expressing the self,
is somehow recorded and preserved in the ethers of the Planet
Earth. This history of the person’s
totality is commonly called “The
Akashic Records.” The Records
have meaning in the context
of explaining the connection
between mankind and the socalled Inner World.
By describing the relationship to each one (Inner and Outer World), one can accept their
material self and their psychic
self. The Akashic aspect of man
is psychic, yet there is a correlation when one understands the
thinking of the psychic state has
an effect on the material state.
Hall of Records and Doors
Yo u a c c e s s t h e A k a s h i c
Records through the Hall of
Records and Doors by understanding that you are these two
things — a material thinking being and a non-material inner
being. Access is through a process that divides those two fields
and permits the person to enter
directly to that which is called
the psychic field.
Most methods of access are
through a numbered sequence
such as 1 to 15 for what is referred to as the 15th Step and /or
other similar number processes
depending on the depth needed
to attain the type or kind of answers required. The numbered
sequence is used because the
material person is already preconditioned to accept pacing
through a numbered system that
has value — an important ingredient to have an organization to
attain levels desired.
We can be our own gatekeeper. In self-hypnosis, it is the
self. In guided hypnosis, it is the
guide. It is important the individual determine that they have
the guide (or Angel) they would
most desire and avoid guides
who are not wanted. One can
go to the inner and receive truth,
or one can go to the inner, be
fooled and receive untruth.

Unusual Trips
That Enhance
the Soul
A
By Ann Nelson
fter traipsing around
the globe for many
years, I have come
to treasure visiting
places that are truly
unique. The anticipation of not
knowing what to expect and the
surprises of finding caches of
richness upon arrival is half the
fun. My husband and I picked
out four destinations that we felt
would fit into the “unusual destination” category.
You won’t find marble floors,
chandeliers, valet parking, big
screen televisions, or make-up
mirrors with 100X magnification
in any of these places. What you
will find is one-hundred percent
genuine, authentic and delightful.
Thoreau once wrote “Most
of the luxuries and many of the
so-called comforts of life are not
only indispensable, but a positive hindrance to the elevation of
mankind.” We kept these words
in our mind while we were pondering over our choices regarding unusual places to visit.
Following is a brief description of each of the places we
selected:
el Capitan Canyon Nature
Lodging on the California
Coast, near Santa Barbara, CA
Safari tents and cedar cabins
may not sound luxurious, but
when we first walked into our
cabin suite and discovered the
down-style duvets, the partial
kitchen and a deep soaking bath
tub with view windows, I knew
we wouldn’t be “roughing it.”
The view of El Capitan Canyon
from our front porch was filled
with the natural beauty of expansive stands of sycamore and
oak trees, tall ridge-tops and a
huge blue sky. We felt the ocean
breeze and could hear intermittent waves of the Pacific Ocean
in the background.
Simplicity took center stage
while we were staying in our
nature retreat. Our car stayed in
a parked position. We walked
down the path to the ocean, we
gazed at the stars, and we listened to the frogs as we drifted
off to sleep and we woke up to
the sound of chirping birds. We
left the curtains open at night so
we could see the first glimmer
of sunlight bouncing off the tree
tops when we opened our eyes
in the morning.
We didn’t want to leave without cooking dinner over the fire
pit in our backyard. After picking
up a BBQ kit and other dinner
preparations at the local camp
store, the Canyon Market, we
made a fabulous dinner. My
husband was delighted when
he achieved what he referred
to as his “one-match dinner.”
I have a feeling that may have
been his proudest outdoor accomplishment since his days in
the Boy Scouts about thirty five
years ago.
Our stay at el Capitan was
peaceful and quiet. The brochure sums up the vision of el
Capitan beautifully. “The camp
is designed to be an antidote
to all that is excessive, formal,
artificial or contrived. By focusing on the essence of things, we
hope to offer you a welcomed
retreat in tune with the spirit of
the Canyon.”
Aliso Creek Inn and Golf
Course in Laguna Beach, CA
We stumbled across Aliso
Creek Inn purely by accident.
My husband and I wanted to
stay in Laguna Beach in a place
with a kitchen and not spend a
fortune. After a quick search,
David found an inn with a complete kitchen, tucked away in a
spectacular eighty-acre canyon
on a golf course.
After arriving, we soon realized that one delightful surprise
after another awaited us. The

inn was only a ten-minute walk
to the beach. The views from
the beach were incredible. We
could see Catalina Island and
the Palos Verdes peninsula in the
background.
We woke up in the morning, made a fabulous breakfast,
played a round of golf and then
went back to the beach. We
read about the warning signs
to watch out for mountain lions
and rattle snakes, but didn’t let
that bother us. At night, after taking in a Jacuzzi, we sat outside
in the open air drinking wine
and gazing up at the walls of
the canyon. After we discovered
this little gem, we found it exceptionally hard to leave. Aliso
Creek Inn is an unpretentious,
tranquil resort and definitely a
place we want to return to.
and filled with character, charm
and lots of room. There are two
bathrooms, and a full kitchen
stocked with everything you’d
need to cook a gourmet dinner.
There are a number of boats to
choose from, including a sleek
modern yacht. We picked The
Crown Jewel because it is situated at the end of the dock, had
a huge deck with comfortable
patio furniture and a view of The
Queen Mary.
After dinner at Gladstone’s.
located directly across from our
boat, we retired to our master
suite and were lulled to sleep by
the gentle lapping of the sea
water on the hull of the boat and
the smell of salt air. Dockside
Bed & Boat is located in Rainbow Harbor in downtown Long
Beach at dock #5.
Dockside Bed & Boat in Long
Beach, CA
If you have ever wanted to
spend the night on a 54-foot
classic motor yacht, this may be
the place to do it. We stayed in
The Crown Jewel, an all wooden boat, built in the mid-fifties
Prince of Peace Abbey in
Oceanside, CA
Some people go to the Prince
of Peace Abbey for religious
reasons. The Prince of Peace
Abbey is a place of cultural diversity. One of the monks was
born in India, three were born
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1
in the Philippines, two are from
Vietnam, one is from Holland
and another monk was born in
Cuba. I wanted to stay at the
abbey for the purpose of making it a personal spiritual retreat.
After a long career in real estate,
I needed to spend some time
deciding what to do next.
I knew from past experiences
that many of my best answers
have come to me when I am
away from my usual surroundings and after a time of quiet
meditation. Intuitively, I knew
that this was a good place for
me to go and find answers. During my visit, I ate meals in complete silence and hiked on the
130 acres on top of the hills and
vistas that overlook Oceanside.
My time spent alone here in quiet contemplation is exactly what
I needed.
After completing our tour of
these unique places, I reaffirmed
my belief that relationships are
enhanced by creating special
moments. These moments remind us why we’re together in
the first place.

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 Relationship Changes
in Transformative Times
By Heather Green
We are living in a time of
great transformation. In this vibration of 2012, the earth and all
beings on her are showered with
healing energies from the center
of the galaxy, other planets and
planetary beings. This is an opportunity to harness our initiative
and step into the change that impacts all areas of our lives. One
aspect that is affected by these
changes is our relationships.
Are you feeling like you’ve
been abandoned or need to move
on from a relationship? Perhaps
you have found yourself yearning for new, harmonious, and
growth instigating friendships,
business alliances, or romantic
partnerships? This is the time to
take those leaps into unknown
territories.
There are many souls leaving
the planet at this time due to the
ending of a life contract, or simply a free-will choice to depart
the intensity while the planet
and its occupants go through
the ascension process. Many
souls may drop out of our lives
because of their unwillingness to
move forward.
If we are on a spiritual path
moving full steam ahead and
others around us are not, there
will often be some kind of separation or split. As we kick up
our heels, they get lost in the
dust behind us. But we should
not look back.
A s w e d o o u r s o u l wo r k ,
clearing out old patterns and
releasing hurts from the past,
we open ourselves to healthier
and unique relationships. We
may finally attract a loyal and
trustworthy friend or an honest
business partner, when in the
past we had experienced betrayal.
The best part is it no longer
needs to be a struggle to heal
like it did in the old energy paradigm. With the new paradigm,
all we have to do is allow the
transformative energies to heal
us, riding this magical wave into
our future.
We do need to use the tools
that work for us, whether it is
meditation, energywork, prayer,
or nature, but it is a decision to
release resistance and step into
this new energy.
We can also tune-u p c u rr ent, happy and balanced relationships. We might choose to
begin a co-creative partnership,
one where both people fairly
contribute their gifts, mastery,
and desire to be together in an
original way.
The big picture of this is presently going on in the world as
the feminine and masculine
energies are being balanced,
healed, and for the first time
in history, equally valued. In
romantic relationships, this cocreative piece is easily seen
when both partners put in the
same amount of time, effort, and
intimacy. Couples are of service
to each other just by sharing in
this way.
It is time to take a chance.
Leave that relationship that is
causing you undue stress, tension, and heartache. Join a new
crowd that leaves you feeling
invigorated. Heal those wounds
from this lifetime and others,
so you can have the courage
to upgrade the special ties that
will fulfill and support you as
your life unfolds.
It is as easy as pie, and we
are like children at play with
these shifts. Mother Earth is
role modeling this to us. If we
tune into her energetically, we
can easily do the same for ourselves.

28 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E Who Is Responsible?
Our Relationship with Our World
By Kalix Sky
As the second decade of our
new millennium begins, there is
an expansion of human awareness occurring at a quickening pace. One reflection of this
broader awareness
is the internet. It is
truly catapulting us
into a golden age of
information. Simply Google a topic
and within seconds
pages upon pages
o f r e l e va n t d a t a
appears. This new
flood of information guarantees that
we are becoming more educated about the issues that face humanity, but it also challenges us
as we confront our own ignorance. It is by addressing these
challenges that we realize one
of our greatest gifts, responsibility.
O u r wo r l d c u l t u r e i s a p proaching a fork in the road. We
are waking to the realization of
how uninformed we have been,
and facing the degree to which
the information we have been
receiving was manipulated and
censored. It can be difficult to
reconcile the fact that we played
a role in creating our own ignorance.
Suddenly, we realize much
of the food we have been consuming is incredibly toxic. Very
serious repercussions for our
environmental abuses are coming to light. New cases of government corruption are disclosed
almost daily and a shocking degree of corporate greed and unethical conduct have become
the norm. This leaves many of
us processing feelings of fear,
resentment, guilt, and anger.
Culturally, we’ve been taught
to blame our governments and
corporations rather than look at
ourselves, but this will no longer
serve us. It is we who created the
governments and corporations,
and therein lies the solution.
We wield the power of creation. Are we not the ones who
have wasted our resources and
polluted our environment? We
can realize that it has all been
perfect reflection of our creative
actions, take responsibility, and
change them.
The perspectives and beliefs that we hold influence our
lives. When we perceive a thing
as negative, we
define our experience of it by that
very belief. It is
each individual’s
responsibility to
recognize this and
adopt more positive perspectives.
With practice
we can train ourselves to view our
world only in a positive light.
Conflict, destructiveness, and
suffering are products of the
selfishness that arises from the
perception of separateness. By
cultivating an awareness of our
oneness we heal the negative
reflections of this belief.
When we become conscious
of ourselves as a single entity,
our enemies and rivals disapp e a r. We b e g i n t o u s e o u r
strength to support, rather than
resist each other, and suddenly
find that each action is a gift.
A truer way of life has existed
here all along. We need only
see it. Oneness is reflected all
around us. Our interaction with
the earth, water, and air clearly
mirrors this fundamental truth.
We take them into our bodies
as they take us into theirs. It is
the next step in our evolution
to recognize this sacred transfer of energy within the one.
The sum of our choices is
what defines our shared experience of life in each moment.
The solution to our difficulties
can be found in a unifying perspective and the unconditional
love that arises from it. Unconditional love creates happiness
because it is our natural state of
being. We have seen how our
resistance produces suffering.
Let us simply let go of resistance,
take responsibility, and love.

Are Your Relationships Helping
or Hurting Your Health?
By Marilyn Beidler, C.N.
Doctors aren’t the only people who have a powerful effect on our health. This is true
because, as much as
we “mature adults”
would like to think
we’re immune to peer
pressure, our friends
and relatives strongly
influence our healthrelated behaviors.
According to one
much-publicized
study, people whose
friends are overweight
are much more likely to become overweight themselves. The study,
which was published in 2007
in the New England Journal of
Medicine, analyzed the social
networks of over 12,000 people
over a period of 32 years.
The researchers concluded
that a person’s risk of becoming
obese increased by 57 percent
if he or she had an obese friend.
If that friendship was particularly close, the risk of becoming
obese was 171 percent higher.
There are at least three likely
explanations for this cause-andeffect relationship. The first is
that most of us decide what is
normal by looking at the people
around us. If the people around
us are overweight, we are less
likely to perceive being overweight as a problem.
The second explanation is
that our self-image is shaped by
the people with whom we associate. If we spend time with
people who “Live fast and die
young,” we’re likely to adopt the
same careless attitude toward
our own bodies. By the same
token, if most of our friends are
health-conscious, we’ll probably start perceiving ourselves
as health-conscious, too.
In turn, our selfimage has a major
influence on our beh av i o r. M a ny p e o ple, after repeatedly
failing to kick a bad
habit, finally succeed
when they adopt a
new self-image that
is incompatible with
that habit.
The third explanation is that we tend to
engage in the same
activities as the people we spend
most of our time with. So if our
friends are weekend athletes,
we might tag along on a hike to
avoid being left out. If, on the
other hand, our friends would
rather eat chips in front of the
TV, it’s a lot easier to join in than
to go for a solitary bike ride.
The point is that relationships
can either work for or against
your efforts to build a healthy
lifestyle. The more your friends,
relatives, and even acquaintances adopt healthy behaviors,
the easier it will be for you to
practice those healthy behaviors
yourself — and to let go of negative habits that are holding you
back.
As a first step, try to evaluate your relationships with an
open mind. Make a list of all
the people in your life, then sort
these people into three groups,

Deva Premal &
The Gyuto Monks
Tibetan Mantras For
Turbulent Times
www.DevaPremalMiten.com
www.whiteswanrecords.com
Given the unprecedented turbulence, both natural and manmade, that characterizes our
world today, this album is certainly timely and relevant. Deva
Premal, a best-selling new age
vocalist and kirtan singer, has
taken a bold step in creating
this cross-cultural fusion which
brings the sacred sounds of Tibet
to Western listeners.
Describing her interaction
with the monks: “Their incredible voices and the intense vibration they create, infused with
such a deep immersion into the
holy sound, has always inspired
and intrigued me. Together we
chose eight mantras that we
felt to be most helpful in daily
life.” The mantras reflect compassion, purification, Buddha,
White Tara, perfection, wisdom,
healing, and prosperity.
It is an interesting yin-yang
that is created by the blending
of Deva Premal’s crystal-clear
angelic voice and the deep guttural vocalizations of the monks.
The chanting is accompanied
and enhanced by the accom-
plished musicianship of David
Darling on cello, keyboards by
Kit Walker, and flutes by Manose
and Marina Stanton, adding
more familiar and musical element to the mantras which can
sound esoteric to Western ears.
This is not the kind of album
you would put on while kicking
back with a glass of Chardonnay. It is best used as an interactive experience with the listener
meditating or chanting along to
the CD. Those purchasing the
album, which comes with a
beautiful 12-page booklet, are
further interacting since all proceeds are directed to the Gyoto
Monastery in India and related
projects.
Matthew Schoening
Elements
www.SoloElectricCello.com
If you haven’t heard the music of Matthew Schoening (pronounced Shane-ing) you can
probably take whatever preconceptions you may have about
what a solo cello concert might
sound like and toss them right
out the window. Listening to the
CD, you would swear you were
hearing a full ensemble consisting of drums, bass, guitar, synthesizers, and yes, even cello.
That is because Matthew plays
his futuristic-looking electric cello through a looping device that
allows him to play a part, record
it in real time, and then play over
that one layer at a time, including melodies, harmonies, bass
lines, and percussive rhythms,
building up a complex composition that sounds like a complete
band.
What is even more amazing
is that this album was recorded
in front of a live audience with
no backing tracks or accompaniment other than his solo instrument and electronic effects.
While on the CD it has been
divided into five movements —
Water, Air, Fire, Earth, and Spirit, it is actually one continuous
composition with no editing or
post-production.
I recently had the good fortune to see Matthew in concert
and I highly recommend visiting his website to view a video
of him performing to see how
he creates his unique soundscapes.
I also appreciated the sentiments he expressed in the CD’s
liner notes: “We are only part
of a much larger picture… my
hope is that we can all realize
how powerful we are, and use
that power to create a better
world.”
Ann Licater
Doorway To A Dream
www.AnnLicater.com
Music lovers who find solace
in soothing sounds will certainly enjoy award-winning flautist
Ann Licater’s latest CD. I mention “award-winning” because
at the time of this writing, it was
just announced that the album
has won Best Native American
Album in the ZMR Music Awards
as well as having been chosen
one of the top ten albums in the
New Age category on Amazon
in 2010, and has been nominated in the Independent Music
Awards.
While Ann has had formal
musical training in the silver
flute, it was the sound of the
wooden Native American flute
that spoke to her Spirit and led
her to study with one of the acknowledged masters of the instrument, R. Carlos Nakai. She
now records and gives concerts
using a variety of flutes from
around the world, including having performed at Carnegie Hall,
and as a featured soloist with
the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, among others.
On “Doorway To A Dream”
there are tracks that feature
solo and duet flutes, as well
as those with accompaniment
by a number of highly-talented
guest musicians on keyboards,
guitar, percussion, electric sitar,
flugelhorn, and more. These serene instrumentals beautifully
showcase her impressive abilities as well as the range of the
flute to be both earthy and airy.
Ann also facilitates a workshop called “Flute For The Soul”
and sees “creativity as a divine
journey.” This ideal certainly
shines through in the graceful
and heartfelt music of “Doorway
To A Dream.”

OPPOSITES ATTRACT
How to Use the Secrets
of Personality Type to Create
A Love That Lasts
By Renee Baron
Stop letting your differences drive you apart. Author and
therapist Renee Baron provides
a new pathway for couples to
navigate their differences by using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the most widely used and
respected personality assessment tool in the world. Through
learning about their personality
preferences in four key areas,
readers will come to better understand both themselves and
their partners.
Full of funny little situational
cartoons throughout, the approach here is to point out that
while other people’s way of living and acting may be different
from your own, they are not right
or wrong. They are just different.
Many conflicts in relationships
are driven by deeply-ingrained
thoughts and behavior that have
accumulated for quite some
time.
When you think that there is
only one “right way” to act in a
relationship, you are contributing to the perceived problem
and not part of the solution.
When your partner feels misunderstood or controlled, it may
lead to resentment: the exact
opposite of what you want to
accomplish.
Full of quizzes and down-toearth advice, this book makes it
fun to recognize the differences in a relationship and learn
to work with them and appreciate them, instead of trying to
change them, just for the sake
of change.

Enjoying Your Own Deepest

By Sally Kempton
The core of tantric strategy is

we do that, the energy within

itself.
The author is a “teacher’s
teacher” who has been practicing and teaching since the early
1970’s. A former Swami in one
of the Saraswati orders of India,
Kempton is an acknowledged
master teacher of meditation,
subtle energy and Tantric wisdom. She offers practical guidance to lead meditators at all
levels to a deeper level of personal transformation.
Here, we are introduced to
what the Tantrikas call the creative potential of Shakti, a feminine aspect of divine reality. It is
the subtle pulsation of creative
potency that permeates all experience. In our reflective moments, the sense of Shakti that
we feel can be accessed by sensing the life force that pulses in
the breath. It is quite literally
the power that impels spiritual
evolution.
This book will help draw your

Two worlds, two souls and
two cultures all meet and gently

courtship have not disappeared.
The “process” can still work as
long as the entities involved are

The book is a beautifullywritten narrative that includes
excerpts as well as copies of
entire letters that the betrothed
exchanged prior to the couple’s
traditional wedding ceremony.
Interwoven into the text of the

the couple’s state of mind and

LIKE A TREE
How Trees, Women, and Tree
People Can Save the Planet
By Jean Shinoda Bolen
Drawing from the traditional
wisdom around the world, such
as Buddha, John Muir, Jung and
the Tao, this book covers the subject of trees, from their anatomy
and physiology to their role as
archetypal and sacred symbols.
Author Jean Bolen is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst and
internationally-known author
and speaker, who was inspired
about this subject on the day her
Monterey pine was cut down.
While she was not there to see
it happen, if she had been, she
would have organized a demonstration to save it. In the aftermath of the event, Bolen found
that there was a world of difference between “tree people” and
“not-tree people.”
The author believes that we
have a reciprocal relationship
with trees; rainforests have been
called the lungs of the planet.
Herein we find a series of views
on the subject of trees, from
many different perspectives,
from archeological to mystical,
from an ecosystem standpoint to
the destruction of trees because
of corporate greed and profit.
While many trees are cut
down to make paper, which is
the usual way a tree can become
a book, the author’s tree lives on
through the words and spirit in
this tome.

There are many talented and

3rd Eye Rising
www.5thelementmusic.com
It’s not that often in today’s
fast-changing world that we hear
music created on an instrument
whose lineage goes back 40,000
years. But the didjeridoo, which
is a hollowed out wooden wind
instrument, traces back to the
Aboriginal Australians and has
remained relatively unchanged
since that time.
Bringing this exotic sound
into a context that blends ancient
and modern is sound healer/
musician Paradiso Turturici who
combines it with synthesizers,
Shamanic percussion, and the
exquisite ethereal chanting and
Tibetan and crystal singing bowl
accompaniment of his partner
and “soul-mate” Rasamayi.
This latest release, which is
subtitled “A Journey Through
Ascending Realms” has been
created from a space of deep
intention to assist the listener
experience accelerated with
evolution and healing on all
levels and is perfect for meditation, massage and other healing
practices. In Paradiso’s words, “I
believe music can heal the mind,
body and spirit and liberate us.
My vision is to inspire all of us
to rediscover oneness with each
other, our environment, and all
of creation through music.”
This is deep, powerful, and
soulful, music, which is simultaneously primal and otherworldly
that resonates with the listener
on levels they may not even be
aware of consciously. In fact,
the sound of the didjeridoo has
been said to help facilitate alpha
and theta states of brain activity, which are associated with
deep relaxation and meditation.
While the roots of this music
stretch back to antiquity, “Third
Eye Rising” is truly a soundtrack
for the Age of Aquarius.

CHIPPY CHIPMUNK PARTIES
IN THE GARDEN
Written and photographed by
Kathy M. Miller
Chippy wakes up from his
long winter sleep feeling hungry.
So he explores the garden looking for tasty treats. He runs up
a tree and meets a bushy-tailed
squirrel. He feels a vibration in
the ground, and a yawning box
turtle wanders past. He climbs
up the birdbath for a drink of
cool water. He meets a cottontail
rabbit munching leaves.
Then Chippy sees a woodpecker and blue jay eating peanuts from a bird feeder. Chippy
climbs up and up, and leaps onto
the feeder. He crawls inside and
grabs a delicious peanut. As he is
scampering home with his prize,
Chippy sees a scary shadow on
the ground. A red-tailed hawk is
flying straight toward him! Chippy runs as fast as he can for the
safety of his burrow.
This charming book invites
readers into the daily life of a
feisty chipmunk and the busy
world of the backyard garden he
calls home. Each page is filled
with close-up photographs of the
real-life Chippy and the wildlife
that frequent the wilderness of
the author’s garden.
The antics of this little chipmunk and the beautiful nature
photography will appeal to readers of all ages. Even very young
children will follow the simple
story. Inspired by photographs
taken over the period of two
years, this book is pure delight.

Every afternoon she leaves the

when she comes back, the egg

the throat of Mr. Snake! Her husband goes to see his wise friend,

teach him a lesson about stealing eggs.
This unusual story will intrigue children, and when Mr.

As this article is being penned,
there are revolts and transitions
in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Bahrain,
Yemen, Jordan and Syria. If history is any guide, it’s fair to say
that these will not be quick and
clean events. We need to be prepared for protracted conflicts
between those loyal (and dependent) to the old regimes, versus
those who just want “change,”
versus religious ideologues.
By Robert Ross
on The Unraveling
We’re in the middle of something . . . something historic. Life
on this planet, geopolitical relationships . . . geological stabilities . . . financial certainties . . .
are all coming unraveled. Bob
Dylan’s famous line from The
Ballad of a Thin Man expresses
the surreal confusing state we
live in . . . “something is happening here, but you don’t know
what it is, do you Mister Jones?” Whether it is the 9.0 earthquake in Japan, the toppling of
multiple governments in the
Middle East, the new war — the
west versus Libya — the ongoing meltdown of nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi, or the
financial crises and the subsequent bailing out of multiple
governments in Europe . . . there
is something happening here . . .
and we really don’t know what
it is . . . Trying to figure out where this
is all going is an exercise in futility. The unraveling is happening
too fast. History may offer some
hints though. As Mark Twain
said, history may not repeat, but
it rhymes.
Revolutions
Revolutions are rarely clean
events. Franz Kafka once said:
“Every revolution evaporates and
leaves behind only the slime of a
new bureaucracy.” When Julius
Caesar crossed the Rubicon in
Italy, it was the start of a revolution — one that would eventually lead to Julius Caesar being
declared “dictator in perpetuity”
and head of the Roman Empire.
The French revolted in the late
1700’s which led to Napoleon’s
military exploits throughout
Europe for the following twenty
years.
The Bolshevik revolution — a
people’s revolution — led to the
most repressive form of government the world has ever seen.
Castro’s revolution, the Iranian
revolt in 1979, and lest we not
forget the Chinese revolution led
by Chairman Mao, all resulted
in turmoil and authoritarian governments. The U.S. revolution,
on the other hand, was relatively
straightforward — five years of
fighting, and the rest was . . . as
they say, history.
Earth Changes
Haiti, Chile, New Zealand
and now Japan — four devastating earthquakes in the last 14
months. But Japan has experienced the ultimate nightmare, a
9.0 earthquake, a tsunami and
a partial nuclear reactor meltdown. This begs the question: is
something geologically different happening? A quickening?
Subduction zones gone rogue?
Or is our high-tech modern media just showing its adeptness
at covering tragedy and suffering as it happens? Thirty years
ago, we would read about tragic
events the following day rather
than the live broadcasts we now

Defining Love
Expressions of Love
Love is a source of energy.
There are many ways to express
how much you care and everyone has their own language of
love. Love can be expressed
with encouraging words, physical affection, appreciation, material gifts, compromise, and of
course, with attention and care.
Languages of love are established in your subconscious during childhood. People are raised
to love in different ways. Consequently, you and your partner
may express love differently.
When love is expressed but
not recognized as loving, you
end up with unfulfilled partners. This can develop into resentment and a prolonged sense
of loneliness, which can make
the unfulfilled person vulnerable
to starting a relationship with a
third party who has a similar
language of love.
Many couples do not realize
it is this difference in expressing love that creates a gap in
their relationship. Instead, they
think they are just growing apart
or do not love each other anymore. The consensus tells us that
many people feel unloved, under appreciated, lonely, misunderstood, unsupported, lost, or
drained in their relationships.
Before victimizing yourself as
one of these, take the time and
make the effort to understand
how to translate your partner’s
language of love — especially if
you find it differs from your own.
You and your partner need to
communicate about how you
were loved in your childhood
and what it means for you to
love someone. For some, love
is being open, honest, and direct, which sometimes means
blunt, candid, and often amplified expressions of various levels
of happiness or displeasure. For
some, love is being obedient and
letting your partner be in charge.
And yet for others, love is to dote
upon their partner with physical
affections and gifts.
Once you understand each
other’s language of love, it requires self-cultivation and grace
to know how to embrace love
expression that is different from
your own. When you can do this,
you will either find out just how
very loved you are, or where
there is lack.

Q: I am watching and listening to the troubling events going
on in Japan, Libya, the United
States and elsewhere around
the world, and I just can’t make
any sense of it. What is going on
and how can I resolve the conflicts in my own life that seem
to be reflected in these global
events?
Jason, Irvine, CA
A: Ernest Holmes, in the Science of Mind, states: “The objective form to which we give our
attention is created from the very
attention which we give to it. The
objective is but the reflection of
the subjective state of thought.”
SOM pg. 412.
What this means is that our
minds are always creating with
thought and what we see outside
of us is a reflection of what we
are thinking. The key to the resolution of conflicts outside of us
is to begin thinking new and different thoughts and to practice
affirmative prayer.
When we recognize the power of the mind and use that consistently with feeling, the world

We Are All in A Relationship
I think that sometimes we forget we are in relationship to everything on this planet. We need
to look to the Archetypes as a
way to understand and a way to
explain what is happening to us
here.
The relationship we are having with the world is in a state
of chaos and turmoil. We are
playing out archetypal energy
in our lives both in our personal
relationships and on a global
level. Relationships are mirrors
and sometimes it is hard to hold
your boundary.
It helps to have some understanding of the major archetypes that Carl Jung referred to
as well as some knowledge of
the old Gods and Goddesses and
the way they dance through our
lives.
We are all playing out the
dance of the archetypal energy
of the planets. In some areas
entire countries and regions are
playing out that energy. This year
we have the Middle East playing out the story of Passover: the
mighty Pharaoh of Egypt and a
few other countries chose to release their people from tyranny
and a red sea of political change
is parting the region.
But not all despots are relinquishing their thrones. How
many lambs must be sacrificed
for freedom? This would be the
dance of the archetypes of Aries the God of war in Uranus the
planet of revolution.
We also have the story of
Innana and Ereshkigal and the
story of the loss of worldly possessions. It is the dance between
Pluto and Capricorn which plays
out in the Great Recession that
started in 2008 and will continue for many more years.
The Capitalism of big business is Capricorn (Innana) and
the financial collapse is Pluto
(Ereshkigal). In my parable the
story has a more satisfying ending than in the original one
where the sisters were antagonistic and vengeful. In this one,
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 they cooperate, and love and
trust one another.
There once was a Woman
who forgot she had a Sister. She
lived a beautiful life with all the
trappings of a Queen (Capricorn). The Sister lived in a cave
in the dark woods (Pluto) and
suffered all alone in silence until one day the pain became so
great she screamed out and the
Woman heard her.
The Woman had been out
walking on a lovely day when
a storm overtook her far from
home. The Woman sought protection from the storm in the
woods and trees began to fall.
She went deeper into the woods
till she stood at the mouth of a
cave. The Woman heard wailing and could see firelight and
a small figure huddled there in
the gloom.
With trepidation from both
the storm howling on the outside and the wailing figure inside
the cave she stepped forward,
seeking shelter from the storm
and perhaps to help the wailing
figure, who was clearly in pain.
As the Woman walked toward
the huddled figure by the fire
the Sister turned and they faced
each other. Both were startled
by what they beheld: her own
face staring back at her.
The Woman asked, “Who are
you that you have my face?”
The Sister said, “Give me your
beautiful cloak that it may dry
by the fire. I am your Sister the
one you forgot.” And so they sat
facing each other, identical now
that the cloak of beauty was removed. They could sit as equals
and keep each other company as
the storm passed.
Pluto is a great equalizer, it
levels everyone to their foundation. Strips away everything and
in its wake leaves you vulnerable and humble. That vulnerability leaves you open to spirit
and it compels you to reach out
to others.
Right now the world is weathering many storms and we all
need to come together and support each other even if all we can
do is offer a smile and a prayer.
Remember “Doubt is a pain too
lonely to know faith is his twin
brother.” (Khalil Gibran).
On a lighter note we are seeing the storm with a certain wellknown actor right now who says
he has Adonis DNA. He certainly seems to be playing out the
Adonis archetype, which would
also be Backus the god of wine
and revelry. He even found two
young ladies to play out the roles
of the Goddesses Venus and
Aphrodite.
So as we do this dance with
our brothers and sisters, look
around you and see who you are
dancing with. Are you playing
out the part of some mythological allegorical personality from
our collective past. If you are,
then who are you really having
a relationship with?
I think that sometimes we
forget we are in relationship to
everything on this planet, seen
and unseen. We need to look to
the Archetypes as an explanation
and a way to understand what is
happening to us here. And remember to offer your sister shelter and your brother a hand, after
all we are all children of God/
Goddess.

Tips on Keeping Mind & Body Young
Jesse Anson Dawn (accurately photographed at age 67),
author of the national awardwinning book Never “Old,”
plus The Rejuvenator’s Bible,
speaks out about a most stirring subject: how to personally
control the unwanted effects of
“aging.”
Presently answering the question: “Dear Jesse, can you tell us
more about the amazing effects
of what you call Spirit-MindPower/Injury-Shielding?”
Dear Readers,
Spirit-Mind-Power/InjuryShielding is an aura-expanding,
protective-energy that I’ve had
numerous near-death, life-saving experiences with, which is
why I have made it a central
theme of my new, yet-to-bepublished book — The New Era
of Consciousness. Thus to answer the question
above, I will quote from a section of that unique book — a
piece describing what I call a
C.E. (Creational Energy) Test —
a true-to-life account of being
saved from what would have
been a fatal (or very serious)
injury .
But before I quote from that
book, I should emphasize that
although most of this experience is relayed in my lyricalpoetry style, it is nevertheless a
totally accurate description of
what happened — this the Hilo,
Hawaii, Shielding-Energy-Test
that I call —
C.E. TEST 12
The Pacer Car Hawaii
Brake-Test
Being that it’s a Sunday, I
decided to take a day off from
writing and activism, and drive
to my favorite beach — a sandy
one that is a few miles from my
house. It is a nice sunny day, and
I’m feeling up-to-par in my little
old Pacer car, cruising along
going about 40 miles an hour, a
normal speed for this two-lane,
narrow highway that passes by
a lovely stretch of the East Hawaiian coastline.
But suddenly, in front of me,
I see a man sitting at the steering wheel of a big Ford station
wagon, stopped in the middle
of the road, apparently stalled
out.
And so of course I stepped on
my brake pedal to avoid hitting
that car — unable to pass it on
the left (due to oncoming traffic) — and unable to pass it on
the right (because there’s a line
of vehicles parked on that side
of the road). But when stepping
on the brake — it goes all the
way to the floor — no brakes
— NOTHING! — What?! — a
leak in the brake line? — But I
can’t turn to the left or right (so
I evoke a shield of C.E.-light) —
oh dear Lord — it’s a 40-MILESPER-HOUR — CRASH!! — into
the back of that Ford!!
As again time shifts into
slow motion poetry — as again
there’s that WHOOSH of outgoing energy — a quick-SHIFTinto-SPIRIT that vitally saves me
— and so help me C.E. SPIRITUALITY — there was not even
a dent on that car I hit — and
on my Pacer not a scratch on it
— as the man in the Ford shook
his head in disbelief — and so
did I with great relief — and
seeing no injuries on him or
me — I shook his hand saying
— “See you in ETERNITY!”
And so back into my car I
went — totally unscathed by
that accident — so thankful
that activated C.E. — had again
successfully saved me — and to
savor my “luck” I laid down by
the sea — reflecting on the vastness of shielding energy…
And then it’s back to my
house on Oceanview Drive —
still wondering (how?) I was still
alive — as I anxiously typed
46 / A W A R E N E S S M A G A Z I N E on computer keys — sharing
another “miracle” that flowed
with such ease.
Come the night and it’s (IS)
— my time for Inner Suggestions — evoking my body to
follow directions… And in the
morning I see my IS-renewed
face — a saving-grace plan that
can’t be replaced — as what I
do and teach is for the WHOLE
human race… So learn it while
you can, one step at a time —
this life-saving energy from the
center of your mind — pro-
tecting the progression of your
precious possession — as its
word turned to DEED — and
then back to WORD again —
crucially learning ways to TRANSCEND…
As again I survive an urgent
C.E. Test — exploring new levels of spiritual PROGRESS —
this New Frontier too vital to
be missed — dawning The New
Era of Consciousness…

Protect Your Pet and Planet
One Scrap at A Time
By Deborah Nave
Our quest for nutritious and
delicious meals is never-ending.
When we find that deeply satisfying dish, we save the recipe,
or if we’ve dined out, request a
doggy bag.
For pet owners wishing to
extend the same standard of
nutrition and palatability to enhance their pet’s overall wellbeing, chow time can be a confusing experience. Browse any retail pet food aisle and the choices
are endless, even though most foreign pets have never eaten commercially-prepared pet food.
So why do U.S. consumers
believe our beloved companions must survive solely on a
commercial diet? It is due in
large part to successful marketing campaigns by pet food corporations who have redefined their
products to include ingredients
such as brown rice, seafood,
poultry, grains and vegetables.
Turns out, whole foods are what
our pets require.
It only takes a few simple
steps to bridge the nutritional gap
for your companion. By turning
table scraps into meals, you will
save money, improve your pet’s
health, and lower your planetary
footprint.
Think about the foods you
discard on a weekly basis — if
you’re like most consumers, it’s
limp vegetables, hard rolls and
last night’s leftovers. Oftentimes,
the food we throw out is consumable — it’s just not up to our
demanding standards. That limp
stalk of celery and stale cereal
may have lost their crunch, but
they are still perfectly edible.
On average, U.S. households
waste 14 percent of their food
purchases, estimating that a family of four tosses out $590 per
year in meat, fruits, vegetables,
and grain products — about 1.28
pounds of daily waste.
There are consequences to our
habit of sending food to landfills,
since rotting foods take years to
decay. Landfill waste generates
methane, a greenhouse gas 23
times as potent as carbon dioxide, which traps heat within our
atmosphere. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports
that food found in landfills are a
significant source of methane,
roughly 34 percent of all methane emissions.
Wet food waste can also be a
threat to groundwater or stream
pollution if there is a storm or
a waste container breaks and
leaks. Moreover, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has
a program that helps com-panies
convert food discards into commercial animal feed and pet
food.
Your pet will enjoy the variety
of meals and reap the benefits of
a diet free of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. You benefit by lowering your food bill and
reducing your personal waste.

The Transformation of A Relationship
By Allen and Linda Anderson
Often we hear from other animal lovers who tell us
about the challenges of blending an animal-human family.
Sometimes, animals are thrust
together when their humans
create new households together. Other times, a new pet is
introduced into home and has
to find a way to fit in without
being an intruder.
By observing how animals
handle these relationship crises, people can learn much
about their own interactions
with each other. How do you
win over a co-worker, for example, who doesn’t like the fact
that you were hired or brought
into the department? What do
you do when there are negative vibes between you and the
close friend or family member
of someone you love?
A little kitten named Belle
has the answers to some of
those questions. Emma Laurence wrote about what she
learned by watching her new
cat work out relationship issues with the family’s elder
cat Oscar.
Emma writes:
To me, our cat, Belle, is an
amazing example of kindness,
compassion, and divine love
in action. Belle arrived in our
household when our other cat,
Oscar, was two years old. She
was skittish to begin with, but
Oscar made sure that Belle
knew what an imposition it
was to have her join the family. He hissed at her at every
turn, and she gave him a wide
berth.
When Oscar was three, he
was bitten on the head by a
wild animal. The veterinarian
told us she usually saw such
bites on the back end of a cat
running away. This meant that
Oscar had stood up to and met
his enemy head-on. That decision nearly cost him his life.
M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 1 After the bite Oscar got very
ill, had to be fed with an eyedropper, and given medicine
around the clock. It was truly
touch and go. During those
weeks of Oscar’s illness, Belle
stayed nearby. Tentatively, she
drew closer to Oscar to give
him company and comfort.
Over time, she gingerly approached to give him a bath.
At first he fussed but was too ill
to resist. Finally he learned to
accept Belle’s love graciously.
From that time on, Belle
always created an aura of sweet
protection around Oscar with
her presence. It’s so impressive
to me that Belle forgave. She
has taught me to take less offense, to offer kindness more,
and to build my daily life on
loving service.
Not all relationship-building
takes place in the animal kingdom. In Peggy Lubahn’s story
below, she learned a valuable
lesson about noninterference.
How many friendships are
destroyed when people think
they know what is best and
impose their will or ways of
thinking on others? A little butterfly showed Peggy the consequences of invading someone’s
space, no matter how well-intentioned.
Peggy writes:
Around the middle of June
I spotted on one of my dill
plants a handsome green caterpillar with black and yellow
markings. The little fellow was
about three-quarters of an inch
long, so he must have already
been at least two weeks old. I
called him (or her) Charlie and
talked to him every day while
I watered my plants. His color
matched the stems and leaves
of the dill plants so closely that
sometimes it took a little while
for me to find him.
Before long, it was easy to
see that the mother butterfly
had been wise to lay only one
egg on my dill plant. Charlie
ate so much that there would
not have been enough leaves
to share with even one more
caterpillar.
In mid-July I found Charlie
in the wrong place. He had
obviously gotten confused
and wandered along a catnip
branch that was close to his
dill plant. Now he was resting
on the catnip plant. At first I
was worried Charlie would
starve: All the books say that
black swallowtail caterpillars
like to eat only dill and parsley
leaves. Catnip leaves are simply not on their menu.
Then I realized that he was
ready to make his chrysalis because he was getting into his
question mark position. I was
sure that he was on the wrong
plant because he didn’t know
any better. I figured the best
thing to do would be to move
him back to his proper home
on a dill plant.
But Charlie knew where he
wanted to be, and it wasn’t on
a bare dill stem where every
hungry bird could see him. I
watched in amazement as the
poor guy scurried around in
a panic, trying to find his way
back, until I wised up and
helped him return to the catnip.
I stayed with Charlie long
enough to make sure that he
found another comfortable
spot on the catnip. I was really worried that he might have
used up so much of his stored
energy when I moved him
that he wouldn’t have enough
strength left to turn into a butterfly. But the next day, Charlie the caterpillar had become
Charlie the chrysalis and was
perfectly camouflaged against
the green leaves of the catnip
plants. I guess he knew what
was best, after all.
I still felt pretty guilty about
interfering and continued to
check on Charlie every day. It
wasn’t long before I was encouraged by new patterns
and colors appearing under
the surface of the chrysalis,
as Charlie transformed inside.
On a Sunday morning in early August I stepped outside to
find that Charlie had already
emerged from the chrysalis.
I got my camera and spent
an hour with him as his wings
dried, partly to help keep birds
away and so I could reassure
myself that he was okay.
I was able to get some great
photos of Charlie before he
finally soared away on a breeze.
I’m so happy and relieved that
my good intentions didn’t prevent Charlie from becoming
what he was meant to be.
Have your good intentions
caused a relationship to go
awry? Are there relationships
that could be salvaged, improved, or begun with a little
extra compassion from you?
Look to the animals (and insects) for answers. Spiritual
awareness is all around you.
