on the board of the Phoenix Art Museum and is a
former member of The Phoenix Symphony’s Board.

Strategic Plan Reflects Transformational
CHANGES IN HEALTHCARE
Scottsdale Healthcare Signs Letter of Intent to Create a System-Wide Affiliation
Reflecting the historic changes
occurring in the healthcare industry,
the Scottsdale Healthcare Board
of Directors has approved a new
strategic plan to successfully guide
the system into the future.
The new strategic plan is the result of a months-long
process of gathering input from stakeholders and
sets a course that is implementable and builds on
the healthcare system’s strengths to achieve its goals,
according to Scottsdale Healthcare President and
Chief Executive Officer Tom Sadvary.
“Much has changed since our strategic plan was
last updated in 2007. There is increased emphasis
on quality and care management, evidence-based
practice and physician alignment,” said Tom. “The
strategic plan empowers us to provide local solutions
for our local needs.”
The strategic planning process showed Scottsdale
Healthcare’s current initiatives are leading in the
right direction, and provided a framework and
new perspectives for how we are going to not only
survive, but thrive, under health reform, said Tom.
To reflect the new strategic direction a new Vision
Statement – Leading personalized healthcare and
shaping healthier communities – was developed with
input from employees, volunteers and physicians
across the system. The intent is to convey a focus
on improving the overall health of our community
through quality care, wellness and value.
Our nonprofit, community-based mission, “to
provide the highest quality and most compassionate
care for all individuals” remains unchanged.
Scottsdale Healthcare is choosing to lead from a
position of strength as it evolves from hospitalfocused care into a clinically integrated health
system, bringing care into the communities we serve
and aligning with the best physicians and partners
who share our commitment to quality and providing

an excellent patient/family experience, said Tom.
“Our first 50 years were focused on acute care in the
hospitals and that will continue to play a large role in
what we do. The next step in our evolution involves
working harder to improve the overall health of our
community. That means going beyond our campuses
into the community to provide more wellness
and prevention, chronic disease management and
ambulatory services,” he said.
The goal is for Scottsdale Healthcare to become
a population co-manager. “This means providing
the services needed to help our community be well
at every stage of life. To accomplish this we may
expand our partnerships in a way that creates a valuebased system that is clinically integrated with other
providers,” said Tom.
Partnerships and affiliations like those with
Scottsdale Health Partners, TGen, outpatient
surgery centers, stem cell transplant and others
already in place provide a foundation for becoming a
clinically integrated health system, explained Tom.
“Partnerships and affiliations make sense when a
relationship can help enhance our market position or
competencies. Any potential partnership is evaluated
across consistent criteria like high quality care,
superior patient satisfaction and cultural fit,” he said.
“Providing an excellent patient/family experience
will always be at the heart of what we do.”

Lincoln announce intent to form a
system-wide affiliation
Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln Health
Network have endorsed a Letter of Intent to
form a system-wide affiliation to better meet the
healthcare needs and thus improve the health of the
communities they serve.
The nonbinding agreement between the two nonprofit organizations allows both to pursue an exclusive
negotiation during a due diligence period in order
to create a combined health system. Discussions are
anticipated to be complete by late summer.
The new non-profit system, which would be called
Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network, would include
five hospitals with approximately 10,500 employees,
3,700 affiliated physicians and 3,100 volunteers.
Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network would also
include an extensive primary care physician network,
urgent care centers, clinical research, medical
education, an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, an
Accountable Care Organization, two foundations
and extensive community services.
Both John C. Lincoln and Scottsdale Healthcare
have a strong reputation and history of providing
high quality care for the residents of Phoenix and
greater Scottsdale. The non-profit health systems
share similar visions and cultures, and both are
Magnet organizations, a national recognition of
providing the highest standards of patient care.
“This affiliation will provide resources to further
develop the current high quality care in the hospitals
and community healthcare facilities, and honor the
legacy of each organization. Our shared vision is
to become a fully integrated, locally controlled,
world-class health system,” explains Tom.

Healthcare are financially strong, operationally
successful and committed to meeting local health
needs. Both organizations have been developing
integrated delivery systems to expand services
beyond acute care.
“Each of our organizations is known for quality and
collaboration with community partners to promote
the well-being of the communities we serve. The
combined Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network will
allow us to provide more cost effective healthcare
and to thrive during this period of rapid change as
a result of national and local health reform as we
continue to develop a full continuum of services
beyond acute care,” added John C. Lincoln Health
Network President and CEO Rhonda Forsyth.

their current organizational structures with each
advancing their individual missions through
philanthropy.
“Philanthropy has led to the development and
growth of Scottsdale Healthcare,” added Tom. “Our
generous donors and the outpouring of support from
the community have enabled us to expand our network
of hospitals, bring the latest technology to patients and
recruit the finest staff and physicians. As we continue
along this new journey, philanthropy will play a vital
role in shaping who we are and our future.” n

What does “Affiliation” mean?
Our two non-profit organizations are in
discussion to determine whether working
together will be beneficial in serving our
communities through improved access to high
quality care, shared resources and enhanced
services beyond acute care.
Does “Affiliation” mean a merger?
No. Both SHC and JCL will remain separate
legal entities, but a new parent company will be
created. This is not an acquisition; we’re coming
together as two equal systems. As a system-wide
affiliation we will collaborate to enhance services
to more efficiently and cost-effectively utilize
our collective resources to improve the health of
the communities we serve.
Why affiliate?
System-wide affiliation allows us to maintain
a locally owned and controlled system with
combined organizational resources to invest
in programs, services and technology, and to
maximize clinical excellence, quality care and
outcomes across the continuum of care.
Both of our organizations have similar visions
and cultures, have Magnet designation, are
financially strong and are committed to meeting
local health needs.
Our shared vision is to become a fully integrated,
locally controlled world-class health system.
What are the next steps?

The Sound
of Music is the
Right Medicine
M
usicians from the Phoenix Symphony
brought the healing power of music directly to
patients, employees and physicians. Last November,
was the launch of “Be-Sharp, a new Music Wellness
Initiative” at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical
Center. The program, an unprecedented partnership
between the Symphony and Scottsdale Healthcare
Foundation, promotes physical, mental and social
wellness through music. The unconventional setting
served as the official launch of Be-Sharp and proved
a welcome respite for patients, visitors and staff.
By listening to music and being involved in live music
making experiences, a greater quality of life is possible.
A second performance was
held in late April at Scottsdale
Healthcare’s Virginia G. Piper
Cancer Center. Music has been
shown to be particularly effective
in reducing stress and promoting
a healthy well-being at every
stage of life.
The afternoon concerts offered a few minutes of relief
for patient Juliana Swenson. The Phoenix resident said
that the soothing music “made me feel almost normal.”
Jim Ward, president of the Phoenix Symphony said,
“The Symphony’s mission is to provide the joy of
music as a catalyst in helping Arizona become the best
place in America to work and live. Through innovative
programs like the ‘Be Sharp Music Wellness
Initiative,’ the Symphony will continue its strong and
long-standing commitment of providing high quality
education and outreach programs.”
“This collaborative partnership between Scottsdale
Healthcare Foundation and the Phoenix Symphony
is a true gift to our entire community,” said Laura
Grafman, executive vice president of Scottsdale
Healthcare Foundation. “We are so grateful for
everyone involved in Be-Sharp.” n

Imagine having a hysterectomy
or a cancerous prostate
removed and resuming your
morning hike within three or
four weeks.
Thanks to dedicated Scottsdale Healthcare
supporters like Joy and Howard Berlin, minimally
invasive surgery is making these scenarios a reality.
At Scottsdale Healthcare, experienced surgeons are
using minimally invasive technology like the daVinci
Robotic Surgical System to benefit patients with a
variety of health issues. The daVinci in reference
to the genius artist and inventor Leonardo daVinci,
offers many benefits to patients - less pain, fewer
complications and quicker recovery time.
For the Berlins, the daVinci robot was the perfect
fit to share their passion for technology combined
with their personal wish to advance patient services
at Scottsdale Healthcare. Their gift in 2008 was the
catalyst to advance the use of robotics at Scottsdale
Healthcare. It was through the dedicated support
of donors that Scottsdale Healthcare was the first
in Arizona to pioneer robotic surgery with the
daVinci. “Philanthropy really paved the way so that
Scottsdale Healthcare could have this state-of-the-art
technology,” says Gilberto Brito, M.D., chair of the
daVinci sub-committee.
Then, two years ago, Joy and Howard sponsored
a challenge grant, appropriately titled “The Berlin
Challenge” to help spearhead fundraising efforts
for the daVinci robot at Scottsdale Healthcare
Thompson Peak Hospital.
“We wanted to get people motivated,” said Howard.
“We thought the challenge grant would be a fresh
approach.” “We really wanted to trigger something
and make it exciting for donors,” added Joy. The
fundraising goal was met and since that time, many
patients have benefited from their creative and
enthusiastic leadership efforts.
Originally from New York, together, the Berlins
share a deep passion for the arts, Native American
culture and for making this world a better place.
“We want to make a difference and we believe
in Scottsdale Healthcare ‘our hospital’,” says
Howard who also serves on Scottsdale Healthcare
Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “The nurses are
amazing. They really emphasize that caring is just as
important as curing.”
Today, Scottsdale Healthcare maintains a
leadership role in daVinci robotic surgery and has
launched the Scottsdale Robotics Institute. At the
core of the Institute are more than 35 surgeons
representing a wide variety of surgical specialities
including - gynecology, general, urology, colorectal,
gynecological oncology and transoral.
“The Scottsdale Healthcare Robotics
Institute is unique in its multi-disciplinary
approach,” explains Dr. Brito. “As
physicians, we are working together to
ensure the highest quality of care and
successful outcomes for our patients.”

when earlier this year, Mike Janicek, M.D.,
performed his 1,000th operation using the
daVinci surgical robot.
“Robotic instruments allow for magnified, 3D
viewing and fine-tuned manipulation of tissues.
This means the surgeon can see better, control
the smallest of blood vessels to limit bleeding and

Each year, friends of Scottsdale Healthcare
Foundation’s Honor Ball wait in anticipation
for the event of the year.
And, 2013 was no different as more than 700 guests
were treated to The Honor Ball, one of the Valley’s
most enduring, fun and successful black-tie parties.
Held at the Phoenician Resort, the community
graciously showed their support once again, for the
time honored Ball and turned out to fill the Grand
Ballroom. Guests were entertained from the moment
they entered the exquisitely decorated ballroom with
professional dancers reminiscent of Fred Astaire and
Ginger Rogers. The duo danced gracefully across the
custom designed white dance floor and set the mood
for the elegant festivities of the evening.
The 2013 Honor Ball Chairman Nancy Harris Heltne
added her special touch as an interior designer and
along with her dedicated committee literally “wowed”
the audience with the breathtaking decorations.
Stunning centerpieces added to the overall ambiance of
the party.
“Being a part of The Honor Ball 2013 was an amazing
experience. It was a special evening that I will always
feel so privileged to have shared with the committee,
the Scottsdale Healthcare community and many
friends,” said Nancy.
“We are so grateful to Nancy and to all of the
committee members who so graciously gave of their
time and talents to The Honor Ball,” said John Ferree,
president of Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation.
Another highlight of the evening was the Los-Angeles
based Jacqueline Foster Orchestra who brought
Hollywood to the Valley with their high-energy
dancers and singers.
Long-time Scottsdale Healthcare philanthropist
Bob Duffy was recognized as the 2013 Honoree.
Bob captivated the audience with his personal and
heartfelt gratitude, “It has been my honor to serve the
community,” Bob said. “I must admit that while many
patients’ lives were changed and in some cases actually
saved, my own life changed as well because of the
wonderful experience. I feel that I took away so much
more than I was able to give.”
While the party-goers enjoyed the fun and festivities of
the evening, John Ferree explained the significance of
The Honor Ball with proceeds benefiting the Virginia
G. Piper Cancer Center, “For many of you, this may be
‘the party’ of the year to attend; however, for hundreds
of cancer patients, your being here tonight means that
life-saving discoveries are happening right now at the
Scottsdale Healthcare Research Institute.”
The evening proved to be a smash hit with $700,000
raised to directly benefit patients and families of the
Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. Now, everyone is
looking forward to The Honor Ball 2014!

2013 Honoree Bob Duffy
One of the Valley’s most admired communicators is
Bob Duffy. In fact, you could say that communication
was key to his success in sports, business and
philanthropy. Bob’s journey has taken him to many
places, yet the consummate businessman has always
reached out along the way to help others. Originally
from New York, Bob attended Colgate University on
a basketball scholarship. Colgate in return, showed
their appreciation for Bob by retiring his jersey. In
fact, he had the distinction of being among the first
to have such an honor. He went on to have a threeyear career in the NBA with the St. Louis Hawks
and Detroit Pistons. Then, at age 24, he returned
to Colgate to serve as Head Coach for the men’s
basketball team. It was during that time that Bob
made two life-changing decisions – he wanted to work
in business and he decided that he wanted to share his
“good fortune” with others.
He found his passion in the radio business and at a
very young age, quickly advanced through the ranks.
With his entrepreneurial spirit, Bob launched Duffy
Broadcasting Corporation and acquired Christal
Radio Rep Firm.
At age 43, Bob decided to take a rest from the hustle
and bustle of the communications world. He retired
to Arizona, but “didn’t want to just sit still.” So, Bob
devoted his time to philanthropic endeavors. He
joined Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation’s Board of

Trustees in 1998 and went on to serve as Board
Chairman for four years during which time he
also served on the Scottsdale Healthcare Board of
Directors.
Bob’s quest to help spanned across Scottsdale
Healthcare – his generosity benefited the building of
Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak, the Virginia
G. Piper Cancer Center, the acquisition of
the daVinci robotic surgical system, the Trauma
Center at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical
Center and many other key services.
John Ferree said, “It is our distinct privilege to honor
and recognize Bob Duffy. We salute him as the
Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation Honor Ball 2013
honoree, and thank him for his never ending service,

Lifetime Circle of Distinction members received a
unique insight into the complex world of health care
at their spring event on May 1. Scottsdale Healthcare
President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Sadvary
brought the captivated audience up-to-date on the
latest happenings in health care and introduced
Scottsdale Healthcare’s new strategic plan (for more
information see page 04). In a surprising turnaround,
audience members, with the help of interactive clickers,
were able to share their thoughts throughout the
presentation.

(commonly referred to as a bone marrow transplant) at the

On December 5, 2012, Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation
celebrated more than 100 Circle of Distinction (COD) and
Legacies of Distinction (LOD) members at the annual fall Circle
of Distinction event. The highlight of the evening for these
loyal donors was the introduction to the newest jewel in the
crown of the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center – the Cancer
Transplant Institute.
Honored guests were treated to presentations featuring staff
members from the Cancer Transplant Institute. “Our program,
which was introduced in 2012, has already made significant
strides,” said Dr. Jeffrey Schriber, medical director, Cancer
Transplant Institute. “Cancer patients from across the Valley

Heart...For All Time
Caregiver, nurturer, philanthropist; these are just a
few ways to describe Becky Curtis Stevens. For the
hundreds of heart and vascular patients at Scottsdale
Healthcare, whose lives have been changed because
of her generosity, “lifesaver” would be added to the
list. When Becky was first introduced to Scottsdale
Healthcare more than 13 years ago, her goal was “to
help people as much as she could.” She more than
fulfilled that goal.
Becky’s interest in health care goes back to her
younger days in Indianapolis when she volunteered
at a local hospital. After she relocated to Scottsdale,
she discovered Scottsdale
Healthcare.
“My husband always received superior care at Scottsdale
Healthcare. So, my wish was to support the department
of Heart and Vascular Services,” says Becky.
“I especially wanted to help

obtain the most advanced
technology for heart and
vascular care. I feel that my

progress in heart care for the
community.”
Becky has also actively served on Scottsdale Healthcare
Foundation’s Heart and Vascular Leadership Council.

Saying Thank You in
a Whole New Way!
Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation has entered into
the digital age. The Foundation recently launched two
new donor recognition displays at Osborn and Shea
Medical Centers. Each display includes four 42” flat
screens enclosed in a wood case and replaces the existing
recognition displays.
Each display features compelling videos and high
definition colors to honor our most generous individuals,
community organizations and others who have
contributed to patient and community services.
In addition, the Foundation’s Tree of Love program is
included in each display and features animated heartshaped leaves bearing the names of babies born at each of
the medical centers.
The donor wall at Osborn Medical Center greets patients
and visitors at the main entrance, while the Shea Medical
Center wall is located in the main lobby hallway beside
Baquettes Café.
“We want to recognize and pay tribute to all those who
have changed and saved so many lives over the years,”
says John Ferree, president of Scottsdale Healthcare
Foundation. “These vibrant displays literally light up the
surrounding areas and provide a wonderful welcome for
everyone. We are so grateful to share this recognition
with our donors, patients, visitors, physicians and staff.”
