PRESIDENT’S LETTER
“No kind action ever stops
with itself. One kind
action leads to another.
Good example is followed.
A single act of kindness
throws out roots in all
directions, and the roots
spring up and make
new trees.”
– Amelia Earhart
A Message to Alumni
and Friends of Elyria
Catholic High School
Recently after visiting an ESL (English as a Second
Language) class with our new Chinese students, I was
reminded once again of the power of the words “thank
you.” These words carry the same message and evoke
the same emotional response in everyone who uses them
regardless of their language or culture.
As Elyria Catholic High School embarks on yet another year of living a mission designed
to educate our students for life and to prepare them for eternity, saying “thank you” and
expressing my gratitude on behalf of so many becomes a necessity. The acts of kindness
and generosity that have been bestowed on EC over the past year have not merely
helped to preserve our work and mission but have strengthened it by providing some
fantastic opportunities for every student.
The famous aviator and adventurer Amelia Earhart once stated:
“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is
followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring
up and make new trees.”
“New trees” seem to be the order at EC this year and many stories and articles describing
them can be found as you read on in the newly designed Panther Prowl.
The fantastic opportunities afforded our students through the implementation of our
1:1 Chromebook Initiative have generated great excitement among our students. More
importantly the capacities for sharing resources and enhancing collaborative learning,
creativity, and innovation are sure to increase the academic productivity for every EC
student. This one-time dream became a reality as a result of the generosity of so many
who faithfully supported this endeavor.
With the support of our Diocese, Dads’ Boosters, and a number of private donations, a
new synthetic latex, polymer track was installed this summer. It will provide all of our
students ample opportunities for physical fitness and interscholastic competition.
Aesthetically, the track has added a great dimension for the marketing of our campus,
school, and programs.
Through the generosity of members of the Class of 1957, the new “Panther Pavilion” was
recently completed and dedicated to provide a meeting place in the stadium for alumni,
students, and special events. It is sure to provide years of service to our school community.
Many acts of kindness along with a renewed sense of “reinvestment in EC” are causing
roots to spring up from which new trees will grow! It is now necessary, however, to begin
to evaluate the forest! We have much work ahead in framing a vision for the future of EC
along with the road map to get us there.
Tree dedication was held on Friday,
September 19 in memory of Joan
Rothgery Reaser ’52. Joan’s family
was present for the dedication.
In closing, I encourage each of you to “never doubt that a group of generous and committed
alumni, parents, and friends, can ensure the future of Elyria Catholic High School.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Andrew G. Krakowiak

Capital Improvements
Summer Projects Spruce Up Campus
The work did not stop when students dismissed for the summer, as EC received several upgrades
and renovations to its facilities both indoors and out. Through major contributions from the
Diocese of Cleveland and Elyria Catholic Dads’ Boosters, along with Bob Lehman and family, Alco
Manufacturing Corporation LLC, and the Dan Hartnett family, the Knights of Columbus Field got
a facelift with a new synthetic all-weather track surface. New striping with “Panthers” etched on
both sides completed the overhaul. An important capital project from both a safety as well as a
marketing standpoint, the track will provide years of service to EC’s student athletes, its physical
education classes, and the entire EC community. Total cost of the project was $65,000.
Along with the track, a new 24x32 foot
pavilion was constructed on the home side
of the football stadium. Furnished with
ample seating for 48 on six Amish-built
picnic tables, the pavilion will no doubt get
much use from student activities, game
night socializing, and alumni gatherings.
The grounds near the pavilion were spruced
up with new paving and shrubs as well.
Generously funded by an anonymous donor,
the pavilion was dedicated to the Class of
1957 on Sunday, September 7, 2014 with a
ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the event.
Inside the school, campus classrooms saw
many major improvements as Maintenance
Supervisor, Craig Petrus, and his staff
painted several classrooms, installed new
windows and flooring throughout, and
renovated the second floor men’s restroom.
The maintenance staff has replaced nearly
all of the campus windows, with just 14 left
to be installed.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
A Note
from Mrs. Butler
As alumni, we are well aware of how our Elyria
Catholic High School experience has influenced
decisions we have made in our lives. I know this
because of the many stories that alum share with
me or others when they return to their alma mater.
Alumni “come home” to Elyria Catholic to reminisce
about their time spent as a student at EC. Many of
them reconnect by attending a play, watching the
Panthers take on a rival team, or sharing memories
with their classmates during their reunion week.
These shared experiences help to create the Elyria Catholic community, and remind
us that we are proud to be part of the Catholic school legacy which develops highly
effective and academically prepared young men and women.
Our community has faced a number of challenges and changes this past year. With
heavy hearts, the EC community mourned the loss of two extraordinary teachers,
Mrs. Patricia Bradesca-Schock and Mrs. Donna Grisa. Both teachers touched the
lives of so many students, faculty and staff at Elyria Catholic over the years, and their
legacies will live on through the dedicated work and inspiration they gave with their
combined 43 years of teaching experience. We wished farewell to Mrs. Carrie Fritz
and Mrs. Sheila Soptelean, two highly regarded veteran teachers, who have moved
on to another phase in their lives in retirement, while welcoming many new faces to
our faculty and staff for the 2014-15 school year.
In addition, with the project leadership of alumni Kristen (Frey) Frank ’00, Kevin
Machovina ’03 and Ryan Gorney ’99 we have successfully launched the first-ever
One-to-One (1:1) technology program. This initiative has created a learning
environment that is consistent with advances in technology and facilitates resource
sharing, critical thinking, innovation, research, creativity, communication,
collaboration, increased productivity and mobile real-time learning for our entire
school community! As you can see from the pictures, our students and faculty are
really embracing this new tool.

It’s an exciting time
to be a Panther! As
we move forward in
the 2014-15 school
year, there are so
many great things
happening at EC that
need to be shared
with our current
community of
Annie Cunningham,
students and
Director of Admissions
parents, our alumni,
and our prospective families. We welcomed
108 freshmen on August 25, 2014 and five
more transfer students from surrounding
communities. The second year of our
foreign exchange program with the
Cambridge Institute has brought us five
additional students from China, joining four
others from our inaugural year in 2013.
We have had, to date, 180 shadow students
from surrounding Lorain County public and
private elementary schools. By spending “A
Day in the Life of an EC Student” these
prospective students have gotten to see
what it is really like to be a part of the Elyria
Catholic community.
There are good things happening at Elyria Catholic. I personally invite you to
reconnect with our school’s purpose by stopping by and sharing your stories or
consider partnering with us in being a professional contact for our students to give
them an authentic career experience. We are charged with developing the next
generation of compassionate, thoughtful world citizens who can make a difference.
We have all been afforded this opportunity, now it’s time for us to make sure that EC
is not just an option but the Catholic educational destination. It is through your
personal commitment that we continue to grow and develop the spiritual and
educational richness of the gifts that God has blessed us with. May God continue to
bless you and yours!
Peace,

Pioneering Creative Tech Solutions in the
Classroom
In August 2014, Elyria Catholic rolled out its 1:1 initiative, the first of its kind for any Cleveland
Diocesan high school. It’s a simple concept: for every student, one technology device.
Not a small undertaking in the least, the
fledgling project has taken many hours of
planning and preparation, with major funding
provided through very generous donors,
fundraising efforts at EC’s Spring Gala, and
also The Ridge Tool Company in Elyria.
“This is an exciting time for the students,
our families and the EC community,” stated
Amy Butler ’80, Principal. “We think the
Google Chromebook is the perfect fit for our
faculty and student needs. We are moving
into a new era, giving them a unique
opportunity in the digital learning
environment. We want our students to
compete in a global market. When every
student has a device, we are able to bring
digital and information literacy skills to the
forefront, as well as engage students in
critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and
communication.” Project managers Kevin
Machovina ’03 and Kristen Frank ’00 agreed
that the Chromebook was the obvious
device of choice for EC’s 1:1 initiative
because the school integrated Google Apps
for Education, a free suite of hosted email
and education apps, two years ago. “The
students and teachers are comfortable
using Google Apps, and the Chromebook is,
from an IT standpoint, relatively low
maintenance. It’s a great fit for what the
school needs.”
The fledgling project has taken many hours of planning and
preparation, with major funding provided through very
generous donors, fundraising efforts at EC’s Spring Gala, and
also The Ridge Tool Company in Elyria.
The program itself is a leasing option that
allows the students to use a Chromebook
both at school and at home for their tenure
at EC. Each student has 24/7 access to their
Google docs accounts, Google apps, and
even some textbooks. Students have the
capabilities to work with each other on
assignments and projects, submit work
digitally, and are able to participate in
flipped classroom environments.
Butler states that the launch of the program
has gone smoothly and both students and
teachers are embracing the new options
available. “The most notable aspect is the
instant communication and collaboration
that is occurring between student to student
and student to teacher, either in the
classroom or at home. Teachers can post
notices, changes in schedules, and add
notes to assist students, all at their
fingertips and instantly accessible. The
impact on the pace of learning is much
quicker because the student does not have
to wait to physically see the teacher or be in
the classroom to get the needed information
to move the process along.”

Rosemary Kretschmann Scholarship
In 2014 the Kretschmann family established the Rosemary
Kretschmann Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of their
mother, Rosemary, who throughout her life embodied Christian
values through her unfailing faith in God, hope in all things
possible, and boundless love for her family and others. The
Kretschmann children: Kathy ’64, Don ’67, Joanne ’69, Bob ’70,
Jerry ’71 and Fran ’73 all graduated from Elyria Catholic. The
scholarship is intended to assist a St. Jude student who is
interested in furthering

Night of Celebration
The Night of Celebration Spring Gala and Auction was held on
Saturday, April 12, 2014. Guests enjoyed a catered dinner, a $5,000
cash raffle, live entertainment by New Decade, and the chance to
bid on some fabulous prizes in our auctions. The highlight of the
evening was the honoring of Hal Minnich ’53 and Ron Zidek ’63 for
their outstanding service to the Dads’ Boosters Club. Thanks to the
generosity of our five lead sponsors, Amotec, Inc. /Mr. Carmine
Izzo, Dr. Nick and Mrs. Mary Ann Ksenich, Mr. and Mrs. Jim and
Dawn Reichlin and two anonymous donors, the gala raised a record
breaking $83,000 for the school and an additional $21,000 for the
Chromebook initiative.
The gala also served as the venue for the culmination of our
annual student car raffle. Thanks to the generosity of Elyria Catholic
alumni Nick Abraham ’60 (Nick Abraham Automall), Jim Herrick ’70
(Liberty Auto Group) and Jack Matia ’75 (Matia Honda), the car
raffle hit an all-time high of more than $82,000 raised for student
scholarships. EC parents Mr. and Mrs. Dennis White were the lucky
winners and they chose the 2014 Buick Verano donated by Nick
Abraham’s Automall.

The Call To Serve
By Michael Frey ’07
For most of us, “the call to serve” evokes a sense of patriotic duty or invokes the idea of building
moral fiber. The phrase, from whatever capacity it comes, implies a predisposition that is shared
by many: a desire to reach out, give back, and pay it forward. Those who choose to serve respond
to the phrase with feelings of zeal and empathy. They want to help. They choose to go above and
beyond their civic duties and lend a hand. Having been rooted in the school’s pillars of Excellence,
Compassion, Faith, Tradition, and Community, four alumni have graciously provided unique
perspectives on their calls to serve. Their stories can not only teach us about why service remains an
important facet in our communities—both here at Elyria Catholic as well as in the wider scope of
society—but they can also reinforce the idea that every person, no matter who they are or what they
do, is capable of making a difference.
A Pragmatic Passion for Giving Back
Mike Essenmacher and wife Becky celebrate
their daughter Peyton’s First Communion along
with son Benjamin.
Michael Essenmacher
’94, a director at Barnes
Wendling CPAs takes
pride, not only in his
career, but also in the
outside organizations
in which he is involved.
His background in
accounting affords him the ability to
perform a bit of preventive maintenance
for organizations like the Elyria Catholic
Educational Endowment Foundation,
“which provides financial support to the
school for scholarships and operations.”
Essenmacher works to ensure that the
organization understands the reasons
behind its successes and shortcomings. He
explains, “Once an organization’s board has
this information, solutions can be devised to
take corrective action, alter operations, and
recreate the organization to meet financial
commitments while maintaining services to
those in need.” He also serves as treasurer
on Elyria Catholic’s finance committee,
which involves discussing and ensuring the
financial success of the school, maintaining
the school’s budget, and reporting to the
diocese.
Essenmacher said that he continues to
actively serve the Elyria Catholic community
because of its positive, profound effect on
his college-preparedness, career choice,
and the friendships he has since maintained
for over 20 years. He believes that
volunteering provides the opportunity to
achieve more by working together. “It
becomes an opportunity to network and
socialize while working towards a common
goal, and achieving that goal feels good.”
says Essenmacher. From a very young age,
Essenmacher was taught that service to
others in the community was important. He
credits his parents and grandparents for
inspiring him to use his talents to give
back. He advises individuals who want to
volunteer to start small; that is, find an
organization that might not be as strongly
structured and supported as some of the
big-name companies, and provide a
jump-start to get their operation up and
running. “This provides a chance to learn
about volunteerism while having a big
impact to the organization.”

Chris Kish shares some talking points about Lorain County.
A Heart for Serving Hometown Communities
Chris Kish ’78,
maintains a passion for
service through her
career and her alma
mater and continues to
proactively serve others
right in the heart of her
community. As Project
Manager for Team Lorain County, a public
and private partnership dedicated to
economic growth in the county, Kish works
with her team to retain existing businesses,
as well as attract new business development.
“My passion is really for event planning. The
volunteer work that I participate in—at EC
and other organizations—really focuses on
planning of events and fundraising.” At EC,
Kish pays it forward as the president of the
Alumni Association, a group which she
believes has great potential to benefit the
school in a number of ways. When her
daughter, Victoria ’11 was enrolled at EC,
Kish also gave her time working at the
10 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine
school’s soccer fundraiser. Currently, she
also volunteers at the Spring Gala, the
annual Golf Outing, and numerous
homecoming events.
Outside of her positions at EC, Kish is also
a devoted member of the United Polish
Club of Elyria, and has been active in its
company since 1978. She also serves with
the United States Polka Association in the
Cleveland area, volunteering for many of
their functions throughout the year and at
their Annual Convention, which is held on
Memorial Day weekend. Kish credits her
family as being the fervent instruments of
inspiration for her willingness to give back.
“I watched both of them [my parents] serve
and give back, not for accolades, but for the
good of the cause. I admire and love them
so much, I just want to make them proud
by emulating what I have learned from
watching them.” She feels blessed that God
has graced her with such exemplary role
models and has tried to honor their legacy
through her own charitable acts. She hopes
to pass along this sense of selflessness and
compassion to her daughter. Kish reveals
that her daughter is a rather important
inspiration to her. “I want her to see that you
can make a difference and what one person
can accomplish either by themselves or in a
group.” Kish hopes to not only better her
community but to also better the world so
that her daughter can thrive and prosper.
She encourages the curious to be on the
giving side, rather than the receiving side by
indicating, “you will never realize how good
it feels until you do.” Another piece of
inspiration Kish uses to fuel her spirit of
service is scripture itself: “Do nothing from
selfishness or empty conceit, but with
humility of mind let each of you regard one
another as more important than himself; do
not merely look out for your own personal
interests, but also for the interests of
others.” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Sowing the Seeds of Faith through Service
Julia Strukely, Class of
’99, provides a unique
perspective on service.
Although her roots of
charity began in
Northeast Ohio,
Strukely has since
taken her talents to
Alexandria, Virginia, teaching theology to
students at Bishop Ireton High School.
Currently, she resides as chair of the
Religion Department and teaches a variety
of courses mandated by the United States’
Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Curriculum
Framework for high school students. Prior
to her teaching career, she worked as a
youth minister at a parish for three years,
worked at a non-profit promoting long-term
volunteer service, and spent one year as a
postulant for the Daughters of St. Paul.
Needless to say, Strukely has spent a good
part of her life devoted to the Catholic
Church and its teachings.
As a teacher, she tries to emphasize to
her students that putting Christ and his
teachings at the center of their lives is a
fundamental approach to understanding
how they can relate to God. She remarks,
“Many teens do understand suffering,
death, and resurrection and hope for
ascension in their own, real way. So I try
to get them to connect their experience to
Christ’s and vice versa.” Beyond her duties
as an educator, Strukely also serves as a
moderator for her school’s chapter of The
Beta Club, a national service organization.
In this organization, she oversees students
who go beyond the mandated service hour
requirement to participate in extra service
opportunities. Strukely also serves as a
moderator for the Best Buddies affiliation
at her school. This organization pairs teens
with members of the disabled community
in order to foster relationships between
the students and those with disabilities.
Strukely admits that Best Buddies is a
service group that she feels closely
connected to, as she was heavily involved
in its activities during her college years. “It is
such a humbling and rewarding experience
because the people we work with are so
open and trusting to allow us to come and
be a part of their lives. They express an
immense joy and positive perspective on
the world despite being
considered perhaps at a
“disadvantage” to the rest of the
world.” Due to her strong
appreciation and belief of the
group’s service-oriented practice,
she wishes she had more time to
devote to its activity. Her more
outward volunteer projects
include attending mission trips
to Camden, New Jersey, where
she and students work at the
homeless shelters and soup
kitchens, and volunteering at her
diocesan service camp during the
summer. The camp is a weeklong endeavor in which students
and volunteers will be assigned
to different work sites in the
Virginia area to assist in repairing
people’s homes. Because she
witnesses firsthand how serving
in an impoverished city like
Camden and helping residents
put their lives back together
around Virginia can change the

for instilling the initial values of sharing
these with others. Strukely also recognizes
and credits her peers, especially in college,
for inspiring her. “I found myself surrounded

Strukely’s advice to those who are
interested in serving is simply to do it.
She believes that everyone can do it, and
encourages people to pray if they are
unsure about what path to take. She also
suggests researching various service
projects and organizations that might need
volunteers. Above all, Strukely believes that

Team Spirit Fuels Passion to Give Back
Rob Zidek, Class of
1986, represents how
the right attitude for
serving and the fervent
passion for doing one’s
best can culminate in
successful projects.
Zidek works as a
District Business Manager at Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals and has been doing so for
18 years. His role is that of a coach to his
sales representatives, in that he ensures
that they promote the company’s products
appropriately so that business relationships
are positive and progressive. Zidek, who
comes from a long line of EC alumni, helped
to start the Quarterback Club at the school
in 2004 and continues to be greatly involved
in improving the football program.
After moving back to the Cleveland area in
2003, Zidek noticed that very few alumni
were involved in the football program and
fewer were attending games. He, along with
a close circle of other alumni met to discuss
how to improve the relationship between
the program and the alumni base. He
credits the return of Dave McFarland, Class
of 1979, as the head football coach as what
inspired him to get the Quarterback Club
started. “I saw this as an opportunity to get
involved and get former players involved in
the success of the [football] program,” says
Zidek. The club itself is dedicated to
supporting the past, present, and future of
EC’s football program. This includes raising
funds for events and features that benefit
the growth of the team and its players,
feeding the team and the visiting teams
each week during the season, and updating
the community on the state of the program
through online updates.
Zidek believes that having a “servant
attitude” is an important quality in life, and
he credits his father for demonstrating this
mentality to him at a very young age. “I was
taught this at an early age, watching my
father, Ron Zidek ’63 volunteer at EC football
games.” It was this early appreciation and
recognition of service that led Zidek to
continue the tradition his father began many
years ago. He also acknowledges “Mr. EC”
Lou Rotunda and Hal Minnich as two other
individuals who set examples of how to
serve the school without expecting anything
in return. Zidek takes great pride in, not only
his father’s contributions, but in his own
to the school. He remarks, “I think it is
important for me to show that service to

something bigger than yourself can be
rewarding in many ways.” He feels proud
of the relationships he has built with the
players, parents, and other alumni in
building this program.
Through these experiences, Zidek has
developed a certain connectivity with the
athletic program at EC. His desire to serve

Immersion Trip: Honduras Reflection
Our travels took us to Honduras. During the past summer, 35 people from both the Gesu
Parish and Elyria Catholic High School communities embarked on an incredible mission to
Honduras. The majority of our group was made up of high school students accompanied by
some adults including members of the Gesu Parish staff, Elyria Catholic staff, parents, and a
few others. A large portion of the group was traveling to Honduras for the first time and,
with that, came a great deal of positive anticipation for the mission experience.

shares the impact of his
travels to Honduras.
Juniors, Becky Horvath, Meredith Ternes and Kathryn Scarvelli visit a child living in the community of Nuevo Paraiso.
Upon arrival, the group got a view of the capital city of Tegucigalpa,
a city very different than our home in Cleveland, as we began our
hour-long journey to the countryside community of Nuevo Paraíso.
Nuevo Paraíso is a rural community of homes, schools, and activity
centers for over 100 children. Gesu has been connected with the
community for over 15 years. It is a large community full of life and
children; these children are abandoned or orphaned and now live in
group homes with housemothers, or Tías. Here, they receive
schooling, computer training, skills training, healthcare,
psychological counseling, and love and attention. These children
are then able to grow up in a safe environment and prepare
themselves to attend the University in Tegucigalpa or become a
skilled worker in one of the many trades that are taught in the
schools of Nuevo.
What was the groups’ first impression of the Host
community?
Our group was welcomed with open arms by our dear friend, Mae.
Mae is the incredible woman who coordinates and hosts our
mission experience through Sociedad de los Niños. Sociedad
Amigos de los Niños or “Society for The Friends of Children,” is one
of the most known and respected private nonprofit organizations in
Honduras; Nuevo Paraíso is one of the many missions of this
greater organization. Within minutes of arriving at Nuevo Paraíso it
became our home thanks to Mae’s generous hospitality and
genuine welcoming. Anyone that meets Mae can quickly see how
much she loves the children of Nuevo Paraíso and how she has
sacrificed to serve this community. We are lucky to be
partnered with such an incredible organization, selflessly led
by our friend Mae.

Can you explain the philosophy of an immersion
experience?
Our experience can be summarized by a few things: compassion,
faith, and community; immersion into a new community, service,
forming relationships, and encountering Christ. The group was
immediately immersed into a new community. Honduras is much
different than our familiar life and culture at home, so it did not take
more than a minute to realize we were not in Cleveland. We were
immersed into a community that helped us to see that the world is
much bigger than we often realize throughout our daily experiences.
In order to fully immerse ourselves, we did not have communication
with the outside world. Smart phones were put away and we made
ourselves present to everything happening around us during the
weeklong experience. Throughout the week, students expressed
how grateful they were to be “disconnected” and they took full
advantage of face to face contact. Although immersion into a
different culture comes with the challenge of leaving your comfort
zone, it lead to self-discovery and a better understanding of the
world at large.
Elyria Catholic and Gesu students work on building ten-foot wall.
What impact was there on the people you visited?
One of the most enjoyable parts of the trip was the opportunity to
form relationships. The group met a number of people from the
Nuevo Paraiso community including children, teens, and adults.
Despite a language barrier for many of us, we were able to bond
throughout the week as we quickly realized that love has no
barriers. The group had an opportunity to spend time with the
children each day and it was very clear that they made a lasting
impression. The children of Nuevo Paraíso were an inspiration to
our group as they shared joy and friendship with us despite the fact
that most of us came as strangers. Their love and openness
touched the hearts of everyone in our group and we hope that we
touched them in return. It is amazing how a smile or game of tag
can bring people together despite any differences. Not only did we
build relationships with the people of the community, but wonderful
relationships grew out of our own group. This is the first time that
the trip merged two groups, Gesu and Elyria Catholic, and it was
wonderful. The high school participants, adults, and leaders alike
came together throughout the mission and everyone returned home
with a shared experience with new friends.
Rosa Josephine Perkins ’16 takes a riding tour through the city.
What was the mission’s specific purpose?
How has the trip impacted you and the students?
The mission experience included daily service projects. There were
three major projects that we worked on throughout the week. The
first was the painting of the exterior and interior of a new home built
for a group of teenage boys from Flor Azul, a neighboring
organization. The painting was complete by the end of the week
and we were able to get to know many of the boys who live in the
house as they helped us. We were able to help make the house
look more like a home for our friends. The second project was
assisting with mixing cement and making more sidewalks around
the living areas of the compound. This project required a great deal
of strength and stamina, but the end result was amazing! The third,
and perhaps most daunting, project was to continue to build the
wall that will extend along the entire community to protect from any
potential outside danger. The wall project was far from complete,
but we made significant progress in helping to accomplish this
major project of Nuevo Paraíso.
The mission provided a real encounter with Christ that will leave a
lasting impact. In addition to immersion and forming relationships,
we were able to encounter Christ in a very real way. A significant
part of the mission was prayer and reflection. We began and ended
every day with prayer and had time at the end of each day to reflect
on our experiences. We had three liturgies throughout the week
with the community where we had a unique, bilingual experience.
We were able to share in prayer with our friends of Nuevo Paraíso
and it was a very unifying experience for all of us. We encountered
Christ through the people of Honduras, through our prayer and
reflection, through the Eucharist, and through the relationships
formed among the group.

She credits being at that game as what

and said ‘I’d like to do that.’” Two years later
while in 8th grade, Horvath began seriously
practicing kicks in the soccer fields behind
Avon Village School with her mom. Her
career as a kicker began her freshman year
at Elyria Catholic. As a sophomore she was
10 for 10 under the Friday night lights. This
year, as the starting kicker, she’s 20 for 23
field goals. “Becky is one of our hardest
working athletes,” remarks Athletic Director
Bob Thayer. “She can be found out at the
field at all times working to improve her
performance.” Head football coach, Mike
Polevacik commends Becky’s tremendous
work ethic and consistency on the field.
“She has the determination and will to be a
good kicker. She puts a great amount of
time in and has been deadly accurate as a
kicker for EC football.”

got to be too difficult to devote enough time

Senior Moms Club
What does a mom do once her children graduate from high school and leave home for
college? She forms a “moms club” and continues the relationships that were built
around shared experiences with other moms raising their children. Jayne Eisbrenner,
mother to Eric ’03 and Ellen ’06 recently stopped by EC and shared her story explaining,
“The Senior Moms’ Club was formed so that we could continue to build friendships that
were established while our children were attending EC. We spent much of our time
together watching our kids play football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and run cross
country. We now meet for lunch once a month and while our kids were in college we
shared news, made college food packages and offered support.” Jayne says that in
recent years many of the boys have found jobs, moved away and have girlfriends.
“We’ve continued to share stories and support each other through terrible tragedy such
as the death of a spouse or offering help to a young man in need. We’ve laughed and
cried with each other. Our sons and Elyria Catholic are the reasons that the club exists,”
said Jayne. This fall the Senior Moms Club celebrates their 12th year.
