Dear Community Partner,
On Friday and Saturday, August 17-18, 2012, the Makamae Cultural Arts Center (MCAC) of Elk Grove, CA will hold
its 1st annual, People of the Pacific community festival - Heiva Ma’ohi O’ Patitifa (HMOP), to celebrate the cultural
arts, crafts, food, dance, and music of the Pacific Islands. This is a non-profit event with a mission to honor,
educate, and preserve the traditions and culture of the Pacific Islander community.
In 2001, Makamae Melia Polynesian Cultural organization was formed at California State University, Sacramento to
educate CSU, Sacramento students about the Pacific Islander culture, with emphasis on Polynesia (Hawaiian,
Tahitian, Samoan, Maori). Known today as Makamae Cultural Arts Center or Makamae Melia O’ Polynesia (MMOP);
our organization partnered with Fractured Atlas as a non-profit 501c3. Makamae Cultural Arts Center is a
multi-generational organization where members of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities are exposed to the
Polynesian culture through traditional and contemporary forms of Polynesian arts, crafts, food, dance, and music.
We strive to instill a cultural awareness to the entire community through education and cultural arts.
The 1st People of the Pacific Festival will celebrate at the Elk Grove Event Center, 8434 Bradshaw Road
Elk Grove, CA 95624. The celebration will commence with our traditional orero (chants) by our dignitaries, joined
by the opening parade ceremony. In addition, our festival will be honored by community leaders, community
organizations, Pacific Islander groups from all over California, Nevada, Hawaii, and Tahiti. There will be traditional
food, arts and crafts, games, vendors, entertainment, dance competition, scholarship programs and more. To
honor the Polynesian dance culture, our festival will include a Tahitian dance competition, where Pacific Islander
groups from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii will showcase their talent and culture. In addition, we will also
present the Siva Afi (fire dance) competition to honor the late Paramount Chief Letuli Olo Misilagi, inventor of
Samoan fire knife dancing. The People of the Pacific festival will provide youth development scholarship programs
that offer many opportunities for achievement and recognition to deserving children, teens and young adults. A
scholarship has been created for the Mr. & Ms. Heiva Ma’ohi Scholarship Pageant to honor Maeva Goo of Tahiti
Toa. Maeva has provided countless hours of non-profit work to preserve the Tahitian culture. She has inspired
our organization to donate a portion of the proceeds to a Pacific Islander Culture and Educational foundation and
award educational scholarships for Pacific Islanders, or those involved in the Pacific Islander community, that are in
need of aid in higher education.
The 1st annual, People of the Pacific community festival - Heiva Ma’ohi O’ Patitifa anticipates approximately 2,000
attendees and anticipates up to 10,000 attendees each year after. We estimate approximately 30 business and
community organizations participating as vendors. We anticipate guests to pack the outdoor stage area
throughout the day to enjoy the performances of local entertainers. We are inviting companies,
community-based organizations, the religious community and other groups to participate in the activities as
vendors, volunteers, corporate sponsors, etc. As a corporate sponsor your company will receive valuable general
and diverse market visibility. We offer six levels of sponsorship packages as detailed on the enclosed sponsorship
commitment form. You can select the level of participation that best meets your needs and be assured in the
knowledge that your sponsorship fee will be used to help the Heiva Ma’ohi O’ Patitifa 2012 project to fund
educational and cultural preservation activities in the community.
