The Boss's Corner
By Mike Rey
MOCSEM President
Well this last month has been quite a month! It
started with an amazing private tour of MOCSEM
member Mike Berardi's beautiful collection of
almost 40 Mustangs! Mike opened up his collection
to share with our club, with a personal narration of
each and every car! This was an amazing day and
a huge thank you to Mr. Berardi.
Then the following weekend, Ken Janus, Mike
Sové, Craig Zygmunt and I went to Dallas for the
annual MCA Regional Directors Summit. Once
again a great and productive time building our
relationship with the MCA and other regional clubs
from around the country and helping make positive
changes with our national club.
We then just finished up with our 2012 appreciation
dinner! Great night with 170+ members in
attendance!
Ken Janus and I are coming up with a few new
surprises to be implemented in January of 2013! I
am looking forward to a very exciting 2013 for
MOCSEM, as we have already picked up our first
new sponsor for the upcoming year! So stay tuned
as we continue to excel as a club in 2013!
A final note, congratulations to CDC for winning the
Ford Outstanding Achievement in Design award for
their 2013 Ford Fusion Talledaga concept at the
2012 SEMA show.
About the Club
The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern
Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November
1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to
protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of
the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made.
We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair
with the many generations of America’s Premiere
Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or
fastback from 1964½ to the 2013 GT or the 2004
Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club
members is to collect, restore and preserve the
history of the Mustang along with the stories of the
people and the roles that they played in making this
one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although
ownership is not a requirement for membership,
your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or love of the
automobile are most welcome.
Many of our club members own one or more
Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years.
Club members are always exchanging information,
providing sources for parts, literature and helpful
hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs.
Our members are a diverse group of individuals,
located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all
share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang.
Our general membership meetings are held on the
second Tuesday of each month. Our monthly
newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members
with reports on club activities, technical information,
advertisements and business service locations and
more. Some club activities include car shows,
picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical
sessions.

General membership meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at:

Mustang Memories
Appreciation Dinner
By Craig Zygmunt

Every year MOCSEM's Mustang Memories show
seems to get bigger and better. With hundreds of
show vehicles, dozens of sponsors and vendors
and thousands of spectators, on the surface the
show always seems to go off without a hitch.
Making that possible behind the scenes is a virtual
army of volunteers, well over 200 this year. As a
"thank you" to all those volunteers for their hard
work, MOCSEM held their annual Mustang
Memories Worker Appreciation Dinner.
The dinner was held on October 20th at Warren
Valley in Dearborn Heights. About 170 volunteers
and guests attended and were treated to a
delicious buffet dinner and entertainment. The night
is a great opportunity for members to mingle,
especially as it comes at the end of the season
when the ponies are being tucked away for the
lengthy Michigan winter. One of the highlights at
the dinner was the Mustang pony logo carved in
ice, a generous donation from club member
Richard Teeple. Attendees were even treated to a
brief talk by John Clor from Ford Performance
Group (and a club member) who is always great to
listen to.
Melissa Palmquist, MOCSEM's new Social Director
for 2013, and April Zygmunt deserve our gratitude
for making this event happen. This dinner is one of
the rewards for working at Mustang Memories and
a true sign of MOCSEM's appreciation for the
volunteers that make the show possible.

Saves Member's Life
By Craig Zygmunt,
MOCSEM Web
Administrator
We've heard many times about
MOCSEM members being rescued by other members
when their cars break down, but the stakes were much
higher during a recent incident and a MOCSEM member
became a hero.
The incident occurred at the Mega Meet car show held
at Baker's on September 29th. Member Annette
Pellegrini began choking on a piece of food and another
member, Ron Maniaci, calmly stepped in to perform the
Heimlich maneuver. After a couple tries, Ron was able to
dislodge the blockage and effectively saved Annette's
life.
At the October General Meeting, Mike Pelligrini,
Annette's husband, recounted the story for the club and
presented Ron with an award as a sign of their
appreciation. The MOCSEM board also awarded Ron
with a free year of membership for his heroic action.
Congratulations Ron and thank you for what you did!
This is a classic example of how the club creates bonds
of that go well beyond our shared appreciation for the
Mustang.
Mike Berardi's
Mustang Collection
Tour
By Gary Brewer
MOCSEM Editor
On October 6, MOCSEM member Mike Berardi opened
the doors to his Mustang collection for the membership
to enjoy. And about 50 of us enjoyed every moment!
Mike’s collection includes 40 Mustangs, from a 1965
Indy Pace car to a 2013 GT500, with every color you can
think of. And out back, he has 29 Mustangs he uses as
parts cars.
After introductions, exploring and mingling, Mike gave us
a tour of his collection. He told us the history of every
Mustang in his collection and answered every question
we could come up with. His favorite Mustangs are the
’69 / ’70 body style but his first Mustang was a turquoise
’77 Mustang II. Mike regularly sells or swaps cars in his
collection for other Mustangs that he just has to have. All
of Mike’s cars are drivable, and with the help of his
family, he keeps his cars in operating condition by
driving each and every one a minimum of 300 miles
every year (many of us offered to help put miles on his
cars).
In front of some of the cars are stacks of parts waiting to
be installed to improve appearance and function. Mike is
in charge of the Ford Service Engineering organization.
If there is anyone who knows how to keep a Mustang
running in tip-top condition, it’s Mike. A couple of years
ago while reviewing the new Mustangs with the Mustang
Program Team, he saw a bright green Mustang and
called it "Gotta Have It Green," and a color name was
born.
Even though our tour was scheduled for two hours, Mike
invited us to stay as long as we wanted, and it was hard
to leave. It was a wonderful afternoon enjoying Mike’s
hospitality and checking out our favorite Mustangs again
and again, and yes, he provided refreshments too. After
talking Mustangs with Mike for a few hours, it was clear
from his enthusiasm that he is a real car guy.
Mike enjoyed the day as much as we did and suggested
we do this every year. It didn't take long to get
unanimous agreement. Mike, thank you for sharing your
passion with us and putting many smiles on the faces of
a bunch of Mustang fanatics. We're already looking
forward to next year's tour.

California Dreamin'
By Dennis and Diane Hamilton
MOCSEM Members
After graduating from California State College at Long Beach with a
Mechanical Engineering degree in February 1967, my wife Diane and I
moved to Michigan so I could begin working at Ford Styling Department.
In the Ford Car studio was a red fiberglass model of a 1969 Mustang
fastback and I decided I had to have one.
In late 1968 I ordered the car at Stuart Wilson Ford (now Village Ford) in
Dearborn. As the experts tell you, the way you got a Super Cobra Jet
was to order either a 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle. I ordered the 3.91, but when
the car came in, it had a 3.50 axle and the ‘regular’ CJ engine. Rather
than wait more months for the exact car I wanted, I accepted delivery.
At that time I thought drag racing was where it was at, so the car was a
Candy Apple Red Mach 1 Ram Air 428CJ 4-speed and no A/C. Other
options included traction lok axle, power front disc brakes, power
steering, tinted glass, AM radio, and black interior
I knew from the beginning that I would never sell this car.
I took it to Milan Dragway to see what it would do. I had installed Hooker
headers and a 427 all-mechanical advance distributor. It turned 104
MPH in 13.96 sec which was what the car magazines said it should do.
By 1987 leaded premium gas was hard to get so it sat undriven with
about 33K miles on the odometer. Although never driven in salt, it had
some small rust-through areas at the bottom front and rear of the rear
wheel openings on both sides.
Diane and I took a Foreign Service assignment in Hiroshima from 1990
through 1992, leaving the car in our garage. During that time our son
moved the car outside so he could do his first race car build project.
Somehow it ended up with dents in the roof and cowl top. I suspect they
were from a basketball, but nobody will confess.
The 1993 Mustang Mach III show car had beautiful clear-coated carbon
fiber scoops on the quarter panels and I fell in love with that look. From
the mid-90s on I worked part time at a fiberglass shop in Redford. I
wanted to make carbon fiber parts for all the original flat black painted
surfaces. These included the hood, shaker scoop, cowl outer panel, and
backlight louvers. I also decided I wanted the same look on the interior
to replace all the wood grain appliqués. Easier said than done!
Around 1995 I pulled the motor and began rebuilding it. I retired in 1997
and kept moving forward on the motor as money would allow. It has
standard bore, new pistons and rings, a PI aluminum intake, and
Edlebrock aluminum heads which result in a 9.7:1 compression ratio
(down from the original spec of 10.6: 1) so it will run on today’s pump
gas. The lower end was align bored because the main bearing caps had
been installed in the wrong order at the factory. And it has one gold
anodized connecting rod (you tell me why!). Everything was dynamically
balanced. The cam is a Crane RV hydraulic lifter grind that is very close
to the original spec. I also added an Edlebrock aluminum water pump,
MSD distributor, and Hooker headers. The carburetor is the original
735 CFM Holley with a manual choke conversion. The motor was
finished in 2002

I was starting to go to work on the rest of the car when Diane decided
we were moving from Dearborn Heights to Wixom to be closer to our
children and their families. So the project got packed up and moved.
All along, the biggest hold-up on doing the restoration was funding.
Then in 2007 I got my dream job. I was getting paid to help build several
racing sports cars. That lasted part way through 2009 and I walked
away with (almost) enough money to do the restoration on the Mustang
For a long time I had dreamed of restoring the car and driving it to
California and back, and now that trip became intertwined with the
whole project.
Around Christmas of 2009 the car was stripped and put on a rotisserie. I
then made the rust repairs, moved the seats 1” lower and 1” rearward
and prepped the body shell and other panels for paint. Other Mustang
buddies who saw the car were envious that there was so little rust
damage to be repaired.
I got the engine running on a hot-test stand in the summer of 2010 and
set it aside for later. January 2011, I took it to Jimkid Motorsports in
Redford for testing. It made 378 HP @ 4700 RPM. The good news is it
makes 469 Lb. Ft. of torque @ 3400 RPM. And, even better, it makes
over 450 Lb. Ft. from 3000 to 4100 RPM. It will burn rubber from here to
tomorrow.
The car is now over 200 pounds lighter than the original. The big hitters
for weight reduction are the alum intake (-52 lbs.), alum heads (-39 lbs.),
carbon fiber hood (-32 lbs.), and alum case trans (-26 lbs.).
The paint was done by Randy Russell in Howell (R-Creations) in the
summer of 2011. The first time I talked to him I mentioned that I wanted
the Mach I stripes painted on. He said “Yes! And I’ll bury them under
clear coat so there’s no ridge!” I think the paint is outstanding, and to me
the stripes are one of the real highlights of the finished car.
Clear coating the carbon parts was a nightmare. Fresh out of the molds
the parts looked great, but when the clear went on there were
thousands of pinholes. I did three applications of clear myself only to
have the pinholes reappear. I turned it over to Randy and he did the
same process who knows how many times.
Other features include; 2” dropped front spindles with Granada disk
brakes, American Racing Torque Thrust “D” wheels (14” front, 15” rear),
and a 2-1/2” exhaust system. It has a traction lock 3.00:1 rear end
(highway gears), an aluminum-case top-loader trans with the wide-ratio
gears and Hurst shifter. All the chrome was redone, and the stainless
and aluminum trim was polished. The tail lights are LED with sequential
turn signals. Inside, the headliner and “C” pillar trim are new, along with
all the seat belts, but the rest is original. It has a carbon fiber-look
steering wheel and shift knob, and carbon fiber appliqués for the I/P,
doors, and console that I made.
In April 2012, we were ready for the first test drive. The steering was
sloppy, the trans leaked, the rear end leaked, the carburetor leaked,
both side windows and the rear window leaked. The clutch squawked
sometimes on engagement. And it got 10 MPG on the highway!
Most of that stuff got sorted out by June 7 when we took it on a
shakedown drive to Muskegon and back. 16 MPG! That surely made
the California trip more feasible! From then on the good times rolled:
