Wine List - World Of Fine Wine
The Wine List 2015
We have enjoyed building this wine list up over the last 16 years, we continue to evolve the content and are
delighted to have won a few more awards this year even one for our German Riesling campaign. Having
visited South Africa twice last year we are now building up one of the finest collections of premium South
African wines outside the Cape. Australia and New Zealand continue to be very special to us, but you will
also find some great Old World wines from Alsace, Rhone, Spain and of course one of the best collections of
aged Champagnes in this list.
Roger is the Wine Consultant for The Caterer Magazine, contributes to Decanter, Harpers and Glass of
Bubbly Magazines. His articles and travel blogs can be seen on his website,
www.rogerjonesconsultancy.com.
If this wine list is too big for you please note that every dish that we serve is offered with a matched wine.
Getting the best from our Award Winning Wine List
Together with Riedel and Le Verre de Vin preservation system we offer exceptional and rare wines by the
glass. We were the first in the UK to offer Penfolds Grange and Vintage Krug by the glass, and will
continue to offer further exceptional and rare wines throughout the year for your enjoyment.
Australia Rules!
Whilst the Supermarkets continue to swamp their shelves with mass produced New World Wines, we take
pride in having amassed one of the finest Australian Wine Lists in the World, with back vintages which are
the envy of many an Australian Wine Maker. Remember ABC means; Absolutely Brilliant Chardonnay.
New Zealand offers some of the finest Pinot Noir’s, Syrah and Chardonnay in the world. It’s not just about
Sauvignon Blanc, also do remember quality Sauvignon Blanc really is elegant and pure. Roger is visiting
New Zealand in November as guest of The New Zealand Winegrowers.
Having visited South Africa in April and back there again in January we are now building up one of the
finest lists of South African wine outside the Cape. Premium quality with finesse, these guys have come
along way in the last decade, lots of young vibrant winemakers.
Riedel Glassware
Numerous consumer and trade tests have been carried out to prove that Riedel makes a huge difference in
the enjoyment of wine. We offer up to 18 different glass styles here at The Harrow each to complement
various grape varieties. Georg Riedel even uses The Harrow as his UK base to promote his glassware.
Roger sits on The Decanter World Wines Awards Judging Panel representing Australia, and is a regular
contributor to the monthly Tasting panel in the magazine. He also has a fortnightly feature in the trade
magazine The Caterer. All these articles can be read free of charge on his website.

English & Welsh Sparkling Wines
In recent years we have seen sparkling wines from the U.K leading the way internationally, competing on
the world stage and often delivering a better product than many Champagnes. They are made in the same
traditional method as champagne and in most cases are ‘Vintage’, therefore you are getting a far superior
product to the normal non vintage champagne.
With climate changes it is estimated that Southern England will have the perfect temperature for
‘Champagne’ style wines very shortly. There are a growing number of new vineyards being developed led
by the pioneers, Nyetimber, who in the last two decades have shown the wine world how good a product
British sparkling wine is.
We will be offering an exciting range of these wines over the next 6 months by the glass to help you
understand both the quality and the passion we now have for sparkling wine in the U.K.

DOM PERIGNON
Pierre Pérignon was born to a clerk of a local judge in the town of Saint-Menehould in the Champagne region of France. When he
was 19 he entered the Benedictine order, first serving at the Abbey of Saint-Vannes in the town of Verdun. In 1668, he transferred
to the Abbey of Hautvillers near the town of Epernay. He served as cellar master of the Abbey until his death in 1715. Under his

Champagne Bollinger was founded in 1829, and is still 100% family owned today. Mentzendorff have been agents for Bollinger
since 1858. Somewhat unusual for a Champagne House, Bollinger have been growers and producers from the outset. 70% of
Bollinger's grape supply comes from its own vineyards. This is a minimum, set out in Bollinger's Charter of Ethics and Quality,
which was published in 1992.

LOUIS ROEDERER
A key event in the success of Roederer was breaking the Russian market, as achieved by the elder Louis Roederer. As a result the
blue-blooded Russians found themselves partial to the odd glass of Roederer Champagne, so much so that Tsar Alexander II
requested that a special cuvée be created; one fitting to grace the table of a royal family. And so Louis Roederer II produced

WORLD CLASS CHARDONNAY from Australia
There may still be a few of you who are not converted back to the clean seductive, elegant and pure class of Australian
Chardonnay! Don’t be embarrassed many of the press have failed to realise that! Over the last 10 years there has been a
transformation with Chardonnay in Australia, especially at the top end. These wines now regularly outclass top Burgundies from
France, at a fraction of the cost. Rated by Decanter Magazine as World Class ….I should know as I sit on their Tasting Panel
A young English doctor who migrated to one of his country’s most distant colonies over a century and a half ago
founded Penfolds. Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold was born in 1811, the youngest of 11 children. He studied
medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, graduating in 1838.
In 1844 Dr Penfold and his wife Mary
purchased the Mackgill estate (now called Magill) , “comprising 500 acres of the choicest land.” By all accounts it
was Mary Penfold who was responsible for the management and early winemaking responsibilities of the fledgling
wine estate. Initially the wines - made from Grenache – were prescribed as tonic wines for anemic patients and the
famous Penfolds slogan ‘1844 to evermore’ harks back to its origins as a prescribed tonic.

Sourced from a 4-hectare plot, the grapes for this exquisite Chardonnay are barrel-fermented, with full
malolactic, and are then left in barrel, 33% new, on their lees for 2 years before bottling with no filtration.
The style is quite Burgundian but the wine’s Australian origins shine through in the form of an exotic bouquet
of pineapple and peach alongside the nutty notes associated with this varietal. It is probably one of the very
finest examples of Chardonnay produced in Australia, will reach a plateau of maturity in 2012 and remain
there for 5-10 more years at least. Retails at around £120.00 a bottle.

FELTON ROAD RIESLING, NEW ZEALAND
‘With Felton Road offered in over 500 top restaurants around the world (over 40 countries at last count), it
can be hard to keep up with them all, but there are a small group that we count as "friends of the winery".
These tend to be people who come to visit us, like to drink the sort of bottles that excite us, stay in touch with
the things we are doing and, of course, people who cook the sort of food that we love to eat. The Harrow at
Little Bedwyn is most definitely in that gang. Has been for a long time and will be for many years to come.
Just a shame Roger and Sue won't open up a branch in Bannockburn! ‘

Estate-grown in The Elms Vineyard, on a ‘steeper slope’ which yields ‘riper fruit’ without noble rot, this wine
is made in a style ‘similar to a late-harvest, Mosel Spätlese’. Very rich, with intense, citrusy, peachy flavours
and a racy, very long finish, lovely poise and vivacity. Already hard to resist, these wines are for long term cellaring.

Behind the Label
Felton Road Bannockburn Chardonnay
The Bannockburn Chardonnay, forging ahead in quality, is grown at three sites at Bannockburn and matured in French oak
barriques (with limited new oak; 12 per cent in 2010). The 2010 vintage is richly scented, with very citrusy aromas and flavours.
An intense, elegant, cool-climate style, slightly apply and spicy, with finely integrated oak, it is tight, harmonious, slightly mineral
and long. Drink now or cellar.
Felton Road Block 2 Chardonnay
The Block 2 Chardonnay is an outstanding wine and grown in a ‘special part of the Elms Vineyard in front of the winery’, which
has the oldest vines. In a vertical tasting of the 2007–2011 vintages, held in September 2012, the older wines were still drinking
superbly – the 2007 is terrific now, with a real sense of drive and depth. The 2010 is a star vintage, notably fragrant and rich.
The 2011 vintage is a very elegant, Chablis-like wine with rich, citrusy, complex flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak
and a very long finish.

AUSTRALIA SHIRAZ & RHONE VARIETALS
Here we have collected without question one of the finest range of Shiraz from Australia; many are in prime
condition with plenty of age giving a seductive, luscious velvety wine that would grace any table. Some may
have high alcohol, but two points to remember before you skip over these pages, firstly if a wine is balanced
and age, the alcohol level is not as obvious and secondly the Australians have to state the correct alcohol
level on the bottle where as the French pick a level and publish the same every year.

FELTON ROAD, CENTRAL OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND – PINOT NOIR
‘With Felton Road offered in over 500 top restaurants around the world (over 40 countries at last count),
it can be hard to keep up with them all, but there are a small group that we count as "friends of the
winery. These tend to be people who come to visit us, like to drink the sort of bottles that excite us, stay in
touch with the things we are doing and, of course, people who cook the sort of food that we love to eat.
The Harrow at Little Bedwyn is most definitely in that gang. Has been for a long time and will be for
many years to come. Just a shame Roger and Sue won't open up a branch in Bannockburn!’
Nigel Greening, Felton Road Wines
Behind the Label
Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir
The Bannockburn winery’s ‘standard’ Pinot Noir is a distinguished wine in its own right, blended from its three vineyards at
Bannockburn – The Elms, Cornish Point and Calvert. Matured for 11 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new), it is bottled
without fining or filtering. Instantly attractive.
Felton Road Cornish Point Pinot Noir
From the company-owned Cornish Point Vineyard at the eastern end of Bannockburn, 6 kilometres from the winery, this is always
one of my favourite Felton Road reds. Matured in French oak barriques (about 30 per cent new), a sturdy and deeply coloured,
powerful and highly concentrated, with deep plum, spice and nut flavours, lively and long. It should flourish with cellaring.
Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir
Grown in the Calvert Vineyard at Bannockburn – which neighbours and is managed by Felton Road – and matured in French oak
barriques (about 30 per cent new), is a very savoury and complex wine, deep and youthful in colour. Full-bodied, it is ripe and
silky-textured, with rich, vibrant cherry, plum, spice, dried-herb and nut flavours and a long finish. It's delicious in its youth but
evolves too.
Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir
Grown at Bannockburn, on a north-facing slope 270 metres above sea level, this is a majestic Central Otago wine, among the
finest Pinot Noirs in the country. The mature vines are cultivated just in front of the winery, in a section of the vineyard where the
clay content is relatively high, giving ‘dried herbs and ripe fruit characters’. The wine is matured for about a year in Burgundy oak
barrels (about 30 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtration.
Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir
This is winemaker Blair Walter’s favourite Felton Road red. Grown in a ‘special’ block of The Elms Vineyard at Bannockburn in
Central Otago, it matures for a year in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), and is then held for several more months in
seasoned oak casks. In a vertical tasting of the 2007– 2011 vintages, held in September 2012, the 2010 vintage was the standout –
exceptionally concentrated, yet deliciously poised and silky-textured. The 2011 is a 'masculine' style, powerful and firm, sweetfruited and savoury, with deep cherry, plum and spice flavours, tight and youthful. It should flourish for a decade.

Don’t worry about the blend, the winemaker only admits to nine or more types, except in certain years where it may be
a few less. Mediterranean varieties, silky smooth, clean and savoury, with wild berries and hints of spice.

Restless River, Cabernet Sauvignon, Hemel-en-Arde
2011
£88.00
When we first tried this wine last year we were determined to get it on our list, we managed to secure a parcel of this
very rare Cabernet which is made in the Pinot dominated Hemel-en-Arde area of South Africa. Deep concentration of
Bordeaux flavours, silky smooth, elegant cigar box, soft brambles and juicy fruit this is up there with the finest Cabernet
Sauvignon’s that I have tried.
Meerlust Rubicon, Stellenbosch
2008
£78.00
A classic Bordeaux-style blend, this wine has an intense, opaque deep ruby colour. Bright and vivacious in the glass,
with deep, dark fruit, cassis, plum and black cherry. There is a pronounced minerality on the nose with graphite, cedar
smoke and cigar box bouquet. The perfectly formed, ripe tannins are densely packed giving the wine a generous
opulence even at this early phase of its development

One of the finest Syrah’s that I have tasted from South Africa, dark perfumed nose, seductive nose and flavours, fruit is
ripe but controlled and precise, juicy mouth-watering flavours, both intense and clean. This will bring a glowing smile to your face.
Haskell IV, Haskell Vineyards, Stellenbosch
2010
£68.00
Blend of Cabernet and Merlot with a tiny bit of Shiraz added for ‘salt and pepper’ (the winemaker’s words not mine). Liquorice, hints of
aniseed, elegance, very Bordeaux style with lots of soft cedar and some elegant cigar smoke. Will open up in the glass to give you a heady
aromatic deep experience.

cellars in bottle until requested, but for a minimum of a further 7 years. The grapes are a mixture of
Tempranillo, Garnacho, Mazuelo and Graciano producing the”Supreme Rioja”.

The grapes are left to intensify in flavour on a cordon or cane and the result is this nectar. Beautifully balanced
between its acidity, which drives the wine, sweetness, which adds extra depth and texture, and the fruit.

De Bortoli
The jewel in the crown is the De Bortoli ‘Sauternes’, which was first produced in 1982. In later years
renamed Noble One, this is a classic botrytised Semillon, with a label and capsule bearing a remarkable
resemblance to that of Yquem, the most famous dessert wine of Sauternes. Australia’s most famous dessert
wine.

Alvear PX Solera
1927
£58.00
Our best selling wine, luscious clean sweet fruits, raisins, sultanas, hints of grilled bananas, really like Christmas Pudding in a
glass! This is also great in the morning if you have a hangover, but of course in moderation. This was not tasted by Parker, but
when he does get the chance, there is no question that he will rate it up there with the Gods.
Alvear PX Reserva
1998
£58.00
Grapes on their optimum degree of maturity are spread out on mats to dry in the sun until they become raisins. Matured and aged
in American oak butts by using the “Solera System” for 5 years. The date in the description label of this PX wine is referred to the
real vintage date and not to the solera constitution year. Nuts and wood with light vanilla aromas rising to the surface. Maple
syrup and burnt sugar flavours with cocoa and coffee but with a balance of acidity that is rare in PXs.
