Building g BRIDGES 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from the 2012 Chairman: Tom Heckard The decision to join any board of directors comes with a set of responsibilities beyond just attending meetings so when I was asked to join the CCCF Board in 2006, I thought about what my role might be and how I would be asked to participate. It took some persuasion for me to commit three years to the Board and I am now serving my third and last three term as Board member of one of the most effective, efficient organizations in the area. Never in those early years did I envision how much I would grow to appreciate and participate in building the legacy of CCCF and serve as Board Chairman. While I may have been reluctant in the beginning, my time on the CCCF Board has been filled with amazing growth in our assets, greater community awareness, and the building of many positive relationships. The year has gone by quickly with great success and yet there is more building to do for the next generation. I invite you to get involved and help us be the bridge builders for those who follow! Tom Heckard 2012 Board Chairman Letter from the President: Deanna Crispen It is always hard to describe in a brief paragraph all the good that CCCF accomplishes in Cass County throughout the year. Whether we are providing scholarships for students to build educations, grants to build a better community, or funding for emergency needs; the Community Foundation continues to be the resource that moves community needs into 2 www.casscountycf.org community accomplishments and all the while we are growing assets for the future. 2012 was a year of great growth for us and along with that growth, a renewed sense of the responsibility we have to be not just good stewards, but exceptional stewards of the gifts entrusted to our care. As a recent grandparent, I am ever mindful that the work we are doing today is not about me or even my own children, but my grandchildren and those of others who someday choose to live in Cass County. It is by far, the most significant work we must do to ensure a bright future for all cross the bridge behind us. The use of this stage will enhance the sound and lighting of locally produced shows, increasing the level of professionalism and potentially drawing performers who are not presently active in the area. By purchasing this stage, the collaborating organizations will save significant amounts presently spent on rental of equipment, which will free up funds to be spent on other aspects of their organizations’ projects and missions. In addition to its use by the collaborating organizations, this stage will also be made available to other entities and organizations to utilize in Cass County. Availability of this stage will allow multiple local organizations to expand the scope of their activities and make the arts more accessible to Cass County’s population. This will enhance the quality of life in Cass County and there is the potential economic impact of visitors from other counties traveling to attend the shows and events in Cass County. Foundation has grown from an abstract idea without resources in 1993 to an organization recognized for community impact, stewardship, and over $14 million in resources for good, forever. On behalf of the Board, we are very excited to make this dream a reality and give this outstanding equipment to our community in celebration of twenty years!” CCCF 2012 Board Chairman Tom Heckard told those gathered, “The Community www.casscountycf.org 5 ng a Legacy oodness: This is the story of an ordinary person with an extraordinary heart for doing good... Bill Frushour was a local farmer, born and raised just north of town near Metea. He was a gentleman farmer by all accounts, who lived a quiet, unassuming, Christian life. If you ever visited Bill, you probably ended up sitting in his kitchen area, reminiscing about another time. If you stayed long enough your eyes would be eventually be drawn to a collection of unusual items on the wall. Bill loved to share that the collection belonged to his wife Valerie. He might even tell you about how all those little items ended up on the hoop: some belonged to relatives, some were his wife Valerie’s and others were things Valerie had found in the dirt when they were building their house. Bill had always lived on the same ground and he often chuckled about how he and his wife met and eventually married. 6 www.casscountycf.org “I was a reluctant groom” he’d tell, “I had no interest in getting married. Valerie, on the other hand, had been married to my best friend, Wendell, who unfortunately passed away a few years after they married. Val and I attended the same church, and a few years later Valerie decided she wanted me and even though I thought I had no interest in getting married, something changed.” The couple were married January 26, 1961 and as they say, “the rest is history.” Valerie passed away in 2005 shortly after she and Bill established their scholarship fund at the Community Foundation. When Bill passed away in May 2012, the gift he left to the community through his estate included the hoop collection of those miniatures as well as over $2.4 million to make Cass County a better place for all. The extraordinary part of the story is that the majority of the gift is unrestricted and will be endowed to provide grant awards For Good, For Ever. All that from a farmer whose first job at the RBM factory after high school in 1934 paid just 25 cents an hour. Bill was a gentleman farmer who never sought attention for his good deeds but both he and Valerie were excited about being able to help the community in this way. Their legacy and unselfish gift will benefit our community in ways even they couldn’t imagine! ng Build a e to a Better munity The Judge Norman L. and Ruth B. Kiesling Unrestricted Charitable Fund When a family as civically engaged as the Kiesling family was in Logansport, starts to think about how best to honor the work and passionate service of their parents, it can be difficult to choose one charity to support. The children of Judge Norman and Ruth Kiesling, son John Kiesling and daughter Marlene Konsek considered the legacy of their parents along with the current and future needs of the community and established an unrestricted fund to benefit the many purposes and organizations their parents loved. Judge Kiesling was born in Logansport in 1912, graduated from LHS, and earned a bachelor of arts from Valparaiso University and a law degree in 1935. He met his wife Ruth while at Valparaiso and they wed in 1937.The couple returned to Logansport where Norman served as a prosecuting attorney prior to being called to the US Navy during WWII. Norman returned to Cass County and practiced law until 1958. He served as judge of the Cass County Circuit Court for twenty-four years and also was elected a state representative in 1949. Both Judge Kiesling and his wife Ruth were civically engaged and active participants during their time in Logansport supporting organizations such as the St. James Lutheran Church, Pastoral Counseling Center, Boy Scouts, Mental Health Association, Red Cross, PTA, Neal Home, Psi Iota Xi Sorority and others. After Judge Kieslings death in 1984, Ruth moved to Fort Myers, Florida where she lived and was active in the Zion Lutheran Church until her death in 2007. www.casscountycf.org 7 ge ecting the o the Future: The Charles P. Schaefer Designated Endowmentt The Charles P. Schaefer Designated Endowment Fund was established by Sam and Sally Butler, Anne and Bob Hoover, and Jane, Katie, and John Kahle, in memory of their cousin and to honor his commitment to the work of the Cass County Historical Society. A board member and volunteer at the Historical Society for over two decades, Chuck, as he is known locally, began his service as an active board member at the museum in 1977 and was elected board president in 1990. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Carriage House, served on the finance committee during the publication of the first edition of Where Two Rivers Meet, and participated in the periodic updating of the museum bylaws. 8 www.casscountycf.org He served as chairman of nominations, clearly focusing on the future of the society and encouraging new board members to actively participate in all future planning. In 2009 he was granted Director Emeritus standing. Thelma Conrad, CCHS Executive Director reflected, Anyone who ever served on the Cass County Historical Society Board of Directors with Chuck Schaefer knew how dedicated he was to the preservation of our local history. The Society is grateful that his family has honored him in such a way as to benefit the Cass County Historical Society and museum and those of us who knew him have no doubt that hed be pleased. Receives National Recognition If you’re like most donors, sometimes you have to ask yourself, “When I make a donation to my favorite charity, how do I know that they do the right things with my gift?” One way for Community Foundations to exhibit their quality and answer these types of donor questions is to pursue a certification through national standards adopted for the highest standards in the industry. The Cass County Community Foundation has received recertification from the National and ethics. The designation, valid for five years, assures donors and the community that the Cass Community Foundation County Council on Foundations adheres to best practices and meets recognizing CCCF for excellence or exceeds the rigorous national in governance and management. standards developed for U.S. The recertification was the result community foundations. All are important but one person who often is the first contact someone would have with CCCF is our Executive Assistant. Amanda Muller, had been our Executive Assistant since before she was even married. In her time here she quickly became part of the CCCF family and a vital member of our team. You can imagine then, how sad we were to say good bye to Mandy as she enters a new chapter in her life as a full time mommy! ™ And Welcome! The search to replace Mandy was intense over several months with many applications and several interviews. When we completed our search, Brooke Stotler was named as the new Executive Assistant and we couldn’t be happier that she accepted! Brooke comes to us from the Indiana Department of Corrections Administration and is currently a student at Ivy Tech. She is married to Josh Stotler and they enjoy three children: Tate, Braxton, and Mackenzie. She has settled into our CCCF family and brings a wide range of skills! Welcome Brooke! www.casscountycf.org 9 Thanks for Giving Award Recipient Bill Fouts NAMED 2012 RICHARD W CASSIDY JR. “Thanks for Giving” Award Recipient On Thursday, November 15th, a crowd of over a hundred people gathered at Boondockers for the Cass County Community Foundation’s traditional “Thanks for Giving” celebration, a donor and volunteer recognition event. The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the 2012 Dick Cassidy “Thanks for Giving” outstanding community volunteer award to Bill Fouts. The award is given to an individual who through their unselfish and outstanding commitment of time, talent and treasure, embodies the CCCF spirit of giving. Fouts, a Young America native and farmer was on the initial committee involved 10 www.casscountycf.org with the Foundation’s efforts to build a Lewis Cass Scholarship Endowment Fund. It was Fouts who suggested the first Corn for Kings Grain Drive to encourage farmers to donate grain to support the new scholarship in 2004. The fund has continued to grow and now holds almost $175,000 in endowed funds producing five $1000 awards to Lewis Cass seniors. Several testimonials were shared at the event highlighting Bill’s love of community, Purdue University, Deer Creek Presbyterian Church and of course, his ornery sense of humor! Speakers included CCCF President Deanna Crispen, Board Chairperson, Tom Heckard, Lewis Cass Scholarship Committee member, Joyce Eshelman, and Southeastern Superintendent, Dr. John Bevan. In addition to honoring Fouts, the Foundation had also promised a drawing for 5-$1000 mini-grants for local charitable programs. After five organizations were named from the thousands of entries stuffed into a recliner chair box, Crispen made a surprise announcement, “Due to the generosity and caring of former Royal Center residents, Richard and Rose Gates, we have had an additional $1000 donated to draw a sixth recipient tonight.” She shared that the Gates’ spend most of their time in Arizona and typically visit the Foundation when they return to Indiana in the springtime. www.casscountycf.org 11 ng a Future nnah Jay 2012 LILLY ENDOWMENT COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP HOLARSHIP On a chilly spring morning, Savannah Jay opened the door to the conference room at Lewis Cass High School, spied her parents and two younger brothers, and realized her dream of becoming a Lilly Scholar was about to be a reality. Competing for the coveted scholarship with five other finalists, Savannah is the daughter of Ian and Anita Jay of rural Logansport and ranked first in her class at Lewis Cass High School. Her plans include attending Rose-Hulman Institute and major in biomedical engineering with aspirations of pursuing a career in emerging medical technologies. The recipient of numerous academic and extracurricular awards, Savannah is a three sport varsity athlete, cheerleader, editor of the high school yearbook, and active club member at LCHS. She is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, SADD, FCA, Art Club, Foreign Language Club and daily editor of the school newspaper. 12 www.casscountycf.org A member of All Saints Catholic Parish, Savannah volunteers for Special Olympics, Thompson Totes, Anoka UMC Church, and Relay for Life as well as working summers as a lifeguard and swim instructor. She was the 2011 recipient of the coveted Rosemary Todd Memorial Award recognizing outstanding character at Lewis Cass. Lana Swanson, Calculus Teacher at Lewis Cass said of Ms. Jay, She is an example of a person who truly believes all things are possible through hard work, perseverance and faithan exceptional young woman with high moral values, amazing strength of character and genuine integrity. Savannah’s older brother, Will, was also a Lilly Finalist in 2007. We are sure that the strong tradition of academic excellence and achievement that has been built in the Jay family will carry on through the two younger brothers who shared the joy and tears of Savannah’s special moment. Building Educational Excellence: 2012 Lilly Finalists Boondockers was the place to be as we celebrated some of the most talented students that Cass County high schools produce each year. This year’s group of Lilly Finalists continued to set the bar for personal achievement very high resulting in five high schools having a finalist. All four Cass County High Schools were represented as well as North Miami High School whose finalist lives in Cass County. The five finalist in additional to the recipient, Savannah Jay from Lewis Cass were: Graham Redweik, Caston; Nicole Korniak, Pioneer, Jackson O’Brien, Logansport, Ashley Lowe, North Miami, and McKenzie Mills, Logansport. It was noted that during the last ten years, less than 1% of all local seniors have earned the distinction of being named, a Lilly Finalist. Those attending enjoyed a delightful meal, keynote speaker Ms. Lisa Swaim, and updates on past Lilly recipients and finalists. The evening concluded with the annual presentation of the Lilly Scholar pin to Savannah Jay. www.ca ww c ssscoun u ty tycf.org 13 Community Projects GLOVE AWARD PROGRAM FOR 2012 “GROWING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES” The Glove Program, “Growing Local Opportunities for Volunteer Experiences”, is a CCCF initiative which began in 2010 in response to the very rough economy and the effect the economy had on our local non-profits. The Foundation established the GLOVE Awards to assist returning college students who may have difficulty finding a summer job to help pay for their schooling and to promote volunteerism as a desirable activity for learning about our community. Through the program, students may apply at the end of summer for the awards if they meet the specific criteria including at least 100 hours of volunteer service. 2012 was the third year for the innovative program which is open to any traditional age Cass County college student who has completed at least one year. Fifteen students received $1000 scholarships and completed projects at participating organizations such as Area Five Agency, McHale Performing Arts Center, Thompson Elementary, Salvation Army, Emmaus Mission, and Cass County YMCA. We are always excited to offer scholarships for our deserving students and help them meet the high costs of education. Students who participated had a great experience to add to their resume as well as new contacts for future references and some our most needy organizations received some great volunteers over the summer. 14 www.casscountycf.org BUILDING WITH FLOWER POWER: $5000 MATCH FOR NEW SOUTHSIDE GATEWAY PROJECT With a new highway and gateway into the city of Logansport scheduled for completion in 2013, area residents and businesses started thinking about how to enhance the new gateway to Logansport. Not willing to sit back and ait and see, a grassroots beautification effort by residents and businesses to enhance the Southside entrance soon began meeting and planning. The first phase of the design plans included hanging baskets, flower pots and banners with the estimated cost of the project to be $10,000. Even though Cass County Community Corrections and LMU had pledged manpower support, it was a lot of money to raise in very short time. As a proactive grant, the Cass County Community Foundation quickly established a Southside Gateway Pass-Through Fund to accept donations and also provided a $1 for $1 match up to a total of $5000 in matching funds to assist the citizen group with the project. As the funds poured in, the group met the challenge, and in May beautiful hanging baskets lined Burlington Avenue and Main Street. The bridges were adorned with locally designed welcome banners and the Southside looked vibrant and ready for the future. While flower power seems to be a throw back to the 60s, the impact of the flowers brought a new sense of pride to the residents and businesses along the Southside Gateway. $5,000 EMERGENCY GRANT TO FILL THE SALVATION ARMY FOOD PANTRY What if you were hungry? Would you go o to the pantry and make yourself a snack? Go out to dinner at a restaurant? Some in our community do not have reso ources to do those things that many of us simply taake for granted so when the Foundation Board learrned in November that the local Salvation Army wass in danger of closing its food pantry for the needyy du d e to lack of funds, the Board awarded a $5,000 emerge gency ge grant to Food Finders of Lafayette for the local group. The Board of Directors at CCCF un nderstood that the situation at the food pantry was critical and because of proactive policies and willin ngness to respond, the grant was made immediatelly to help those who are most in need and provid ded food for over 15,000 meals to area families. Thee grant provided a bridge for the food pantry until the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive.. CCCF FOOTBALL FOOD DRIVES Our now traditional food drives signaled d the opening of football for Cass County High Schools. The Community Foundation tent was up eaarly at the first game of the season at Lewis Cass High h School between the Pioneer Panthers and Lewis Cass Kings. While it always a friendly rivalry, on the field, it has also become competitive to see which scho ool can gather the most food for their own local foo od pantry. Foundation board members and staff also visited the Crater at Caston the following week an nd Logansport High School for the big game against conference foe, Marion in September. Fanss bringing food to help the hungry received a rally tow wel for the local team of their choice! www.casscountyycf.org 1 15 Building Bridges of Support with Just a Little More! “We need just a little more” 2012 Grants Chair. Joyce Eshelman reported to the CCCF Board of Directors. The Board had previously allocated $87,000 for competitive community grants but when Joyce and the committee met to discuss the applications and projects, the decision was difficult and they found that with “Just a little more” , they might be able to complete some very worthwhile projects all around the county. The CCCF Board of Directors agreed with Joyce and the committee and additional money was allocated to allow nine grants to be awarded. A press conference and reception was held to announce the recipients of the 2012 CCCF Community Grant Awards on August 23, 2012. The crowd of attendees included representatives of the recipient organizations, as well as donors, board members, volunteers, and members of the media. Eshelman, Grants Chairman this year stated, “As the committee worked through the evaluation process, the quality of the nine projects selected warranted asking the board to consider the extra amount. The committee was pleased we were able to allocate the additional funds.” Funding for community grants is made available through the generosity of donors to CCCF’s unrestricted endowments. $87,765 AWARDED IN COMMUNITY GRANTS 2012 COMMUNITY GRANT AWARD RECIPIENTS AND THEIR PROJECTS: Junior Achievementt . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4260 Cardinal Services . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3855 Personal finance program to be taught at Tablet computers, cases LHS during 2012-2013 school year Cass Countyy 4H Llama/ The Cass Countyy Carousel. . . . . . . . $10,000 Alpaca p Club . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $3650 Replacement of East and West garage doors New llama/alpaca barn Harrison Twp p Volunteer Fire Dept pt . . . $6,000 CLEAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10,000 Thermal imaging equipment Laptops for mobile lab for ESL classroom Special p Olympics y p . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $6,000 g Landing/ g New uniforms and equipment Cass Countyy 4H/Logan’s Cass Countyy Arts Alliance/ Walton LLions Walton ions C Club/Walton lub/Walton M Main ain SStreet treet . $4 $4,00000 00 Logansport g p t Parkks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $40 $40,00000 00 New rooff on Lion’’s Den Portable Communityy Stagge 16 www.casscountycf.org www.casscountycf.org 17 arships Back Home Again g in Indiana Scholarship p Diana Ross Nicole Ross Julie Kitchell Elaine Whitlock Homer & Marie Baer Scholarship p Cass Countyy Memorial 4-H Scholarship p Cole Calloway - Pioneer High School Zachary Cowell - Caston High School Richard W. The fund was established with original gifts of $50,000. During the last ten years, the initial fund value has grown to $73,233 while granting $27,831 to support the Carousel. Your gift to any endowed fund at the Community Foundation is invested and grants are made only from the investment earnings. Through careful stewardship, endowment funds grant and grow.
