part of our ongoing effort to keep our operations as cost-effective
as possible. An expanded version can be found on our website,

Give 5 to Change Lives: Champion
Thirty years have passed
since Claudia Seaman died
in a fire in her off-campus
apartment near the State
University of Binghamton.
And while the pain and grief
have not subsided, Claudia’s
family honors her memory
by celebrating her passion
– poetry and other forms of
creative literary expression.
Claudia’s parents, Elayne
and Hal, said the idea for
the award was conceived
the day before the funeral
during a conversation in their
Poughkeepsie home with their
surviving daughter, Donna,
and a close family friend,
Marcia Preiss. “It was as if we
all had the same idea at the
same time,” Elayne said.“We all
agreed it would be the perfect
way to remember Claudia.”
an early age. Claudia was
already a prolific poet by her
early teens and never stopped
writing. Donna called the
Claudia Seaman Award “an
affirmation” of her sister’s life.
Over the past three decades,
dozens of young writers and
poets – in Dutchess County
and across the country – have
been recognized for their talent
as recipients of the Claudia
Ann Seaman Award for Young
Writers, a fund started by
the Seaman family at the
Community Foundation of
Dutchess County.
Donna, senior editor at
American Library Association’s
Booklist Magazine, believes
her sister would have been
embarrassed – but also proud
– that the family found a
way to celebrate her life by
championing the next
generation of
young writers.
“Claudia was a true artist –
she wasn’t ambitious about
promoting her work,” Donna
said. “But I think she would
have shared our desire to
encourage kids to become
part of such an ancient
tradition as expressing
feelings through poetry.
“It was a very cathartic thing
for our family to do this – the
day of the awards is always
very emotional for all of us,”
she said.
Elayne, Hal, and Donna credit
the Community Foundation
with relieving the family of the
burden of handling the fund’s
administrative details. “The
Community Foundation has
made this possible by taking all
the details out of our hands in
a way that made these awards
completely automatic,”
Elayne said.
Hal and Donna agreed. “These
awards forge connections
between teachers and student
writers, and all the work the
Community Foundation does
has been essential in fostering
this fund’s growth all these
years,” Donna said. “They’re
keeping Claudia
with us in a very
special way.”

Donna said she and her sister
had “grown up surrounded by

Give 5 to Change Lives: Remember
a Beloved Pet
Soon thereafter, the two
were discussing a plan that
became the Chilee Memorial
Fund, which provides up to
$500 for pet owners facing
emergency vet bills they
cannot afford.
Eric Timberlake only knew
Chilee, a big, rambunctious
Labrador retriever, for about
three weeks before he died
unexpectedly. But Timberlake
is celebrating Chilee’s memory
by raising funds for those
who can’t afford emergency
veterinary care.
Timberlake, an electrical contractor in Rhinebeck, adopted
Chilee from his sister, Robin,
in June 2008 when she and her
family were relocating to Florida. About 3 weeks after Chilee
arrived in Rhinebeck, he began
to show symptoms of stomach
distress, so Timberlake took
him to Round Top Animal
Hospital in Germantown where
Dr. Elaine Tucker discovered
Chilee had swallowed a marble
and arranged to perform surgery to remove it. Chilee did
not survive the ordeal.
Timberlake has raised about
$15,000 for the fund so far,
and he said one of the best
decisions he made about the
project was turning over its
administration to the Community Foundation. “I talked to
some friends about how to start
the fund, and getting the Community Foundation involved
was a lot simpler than starting
my own charity,” he said.
Timberlake realized some
people might think it was a bit
unusual to launch a fund that
benefits animals but he’s convinced that being affiliated with
has lent credibility to his effort.

More than a dozen grants
have been awarded so far, and
some veterinarians are raising
additional funds by selling
leashes, collars and other
pet-related items bearing
Chilee’s name. Timberlake
knows the fund, with help
from the Community
Foundation, will continue
to help pet owners for
many years to come.

Give 5 to Change Lives: Honor
Long before she entered
elementary school in Wappingers Falls, Nicole Joy Frame had
been diagnosed with Cystic
Fibrosis, a chronic genetic
disease that affects the lungs
and digestive system. Due to
her condition, Nicole was told
she didn’t have to participate in
gym classes.
But Nicole didn’t want any
special treatment and today, her
name is on the plaque in the
school that lists all the students
with perfect attendance in gym.
Thanks to this fund and the
Nicole’s still standing – her
memory is alive. She is the
driving force for us to make
a difference in the world.
Nicole died at the age of 27 on
September 28, 2011, less than
Nicole Joy Frame
four years after she married
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert
Frame, an instructor at the
U.S. Military Academy at West
Point. At the time of her death,
she was pregnant with a son,
who would have been named
Robert Louis Frame.
Nicole’s sister, Tina Pisani, said
the pregnancy complicated
her health because she couldn’t
take certain drugs in sufficient
dosage because of possible
harm to the child. “She really
wanted a baby and was willing
to risk the consequences,” Tina
said. “She was fearless.”
Nicole didn’t just endure
her own illness. She worked
tirelessly with the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation to help
others cope with theirs.
Nicole was an advocate for
awareness. She participated
and raised funds for annual
Walk-a-Thons, spoke to others
affected by cystic fibrosis about
the importance of taking their
medications, and participated
in clinical drug trials.
When Nicole died, the family
immediately decided to
establish The Joy Fund with
of Dutchess County, an
affiliate of Community
Foundations of the
Hudson Valley, to
honor her memory
and benefit the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation and other
charities.
Deborah and Tina both said
the family could not have
established The Joy Fund without the help of the Community
Foundation. “The people there
have been tremendous, taking
the burden off us, handling all
the details,” Deborah said.
“We want to help families who
are in the same boat we were
in all those years,” Tina said,
“and we couldn’t do it without

Give 5 to Change Lives: Preserve
The beautiful brick church
located on Route 9W in Ulster
Park is now the headquarters
of the Klyne Esopus Historical
Society Museum, a group that’s
been preserving documents and
artifacts and celebrating the
town’s rich history since 1986.
The 185-year-old building is
listed on the National Register
of Historic Places.
The museum is run and
operated by volunteers so
recruiting volunteers with
necessary skills is an ongoing
need. In 2010 Jonathan
Herring, president of the Board
of Directors, asked Byllye
Montalto to join the board
and use her accounting
background to manage the
group’s finances.
Not long after, the board
needed to make a decision:
finding a new place to
put an endowment fund

matter – they give us the same
level of service they give to
every organization,” he said.

“It’s an advantage when people
are researching to see whether
to respond to our appeals for
donations,” she said. “With the
Community Foundation in our
corner, we have a lot more
resources behind us now. It
even makes it easier to recruit
new volunteers for our board.”

structure, we’re assured of
having a museum that
celebrates our history 20,
50 or 100 years from now,”
Montalto said. “We have
more books to write,” she
says, referring to the several
histories of the town, the
museum and local notables

just to collect and store papers
and artifacts... it is also to
interpret and disseminate
the history of the town.”

Give 5 to Change Lives: Ensure
Today, St. Joseph School boasts
a 25% increased enrollment
and a Giving Tree Endowment
Fund that is growing, but the
story was not always so rosy.
In 2009 Jeanne Dolamore, the
newly hired principal, received
some devastating news:
St. Joseph School, a fixture in
Kingston for nearly a century,
was one of several Catholic
schools in the Hudson Valley
slated for closure.
“The announcement was a
shock to all of us,” Dolamore
recalled. “Like many Catholic
schools, our enrollment was
declining. But nobody
connected with the school
or surrounding community –
the students, the parents,
the alumni, or local leaders
or businesses – wanted to
see St. Joseph closed.”
campaign was immediately
launched. The result: $300,000
was raised quickly, ensuring
enough short-term funds for
operating expenses and
scholarships.
Almost as soon as the
fundraising campaign began,
members of the board of
trustees elected to create a fund
at the Community Foundation
of Ulster County. Dolamore
said the decision has helped
the school in numerous ways.
“We chose the Community
Foundation because we knew
it was a safe and well-organized
place for our money,” she said.
“The staff walked us through
the process and explained
everything. We wanted a place
that past and future donors
would have faith in, and we
found it,” she said.
Dolamore said she knows
St. Joseph will have a long and
successful future. The school
has opened a new state-of-theart media center and tripled
the size of its art and music
programs at a time when many
public schools are curtailing
theirs. And St. Joseph’s
reputation is stronger than
it’s been in a long time, in
part, Dolamore said, because
of its affiliation with the
Community Foundation.
We chose the Community
Foundation because we knew it
was a safe and well-organized
place for our money. We wanted
a place that past and future
donors would have faith in,
and we found it.
“My job is to tell the story of
St. Joseph School and what
we stand for. We feel that if
we do that, the rest will take
care of itself,” Dolamore said.
“The community is behind
us – there’s a real buzz about
the place – and having the
helping us is a big boost.”
Dolamore and members of the
school’s board of trustees took
immediate action. Over 300
school, parish and community
members attended a first
meeting and a fundraising

the $12,175 awarded this past
year from funds established
by Putnam County residents
and organizations, $40,000
more was awarded to
Putnam County nonprofits
and residents through other
funds at the Community
Foundations of the Hudson
Valley.
Grow Community-Based Philanthropy
We’ve awarded college
scholarships, given Excellence
in Teaching Awards to
teachers at Mahopac and
Brewster High Schools, and
provided grants for medical
and safety equipment and
training across the county,
school-to-work transition
funding for students with
disabilities entering the
workforce, humane animal
care, breast cancer support
services and immigrant
transition services.
This is just a small sample
of the charitable activities
supported by the Community
Foundation, and we’d love to
do more. Contributions to the
Fund for Putnam County are

Monies raised support charitable programs and grants in three counties

Nancy Aronzon, and William
and Tildy Davenport epitomize
the culture of community
service that is the basis of
what we do at the Community
Foundations. The Aronzons
first moved to Dutchess
County over 30 years ago and
immediately became an integral
part of the philanthropic
fabric in our community. The
Davenports are both lifelong
residents of Ulster County

Five years ago Brian Drabkin,
a lumber wholesaler who lives
in High Falls, learned from a
neighbor about a charitable
organization being launched in
Ulster County. He expressed
an interest and was asked by
of Ulster County, an affiliate of
the Community Foundations
of the Hudson Valley, to be a
member of the advisory board.
“Sure, they give money to
organizations everybody’s
heard of, like the Red Cross,
Mohonk Preserve and Family
of Woodstock,” he said. “But
also makes sure grants are
awarded to as many geographic
and charitable areas as
possible.”
Judy and Brian Drabkin
He conceived the idea for their
fund after reading an article by
William F. Buckley, Jr. in the
New Yorker Magazine. Buckley
and 9 other influential people
were invited to be the trustees
of a trust fund created by a
man who lived in Wichita,
Kansas. None of the trustees
were acquainted with the
benefactor yet they were
entrusted, over a period of 10
years, to give away his money.
Drabkin recognized the flaws
in this process and serves to
ensure that funds raised and
allocated are local.
“The people on the advisory
board are a diverse group. They
know the County and they
allocate funds to all sorts of
causes within Ulster County,
and that’s what I want,” he said.
“It’s the structure of the board
that makes me comfortable
about creating this fund.”
Legacy Society
The Legacy Society was created by
the Community Foundation to honor
and thank those individuals whose
commitment to our communities
inspired them to make a planned
gift through their wills and estates
to support the causes they care
about most.
