The partners at Global Golf Advisors, the National firm
directing the formation of our 5 year strategic plan, are now
at the point where they will be conducting focus groups to
get the opinions of the membership on several subjects.
Focus groups will begin in mid-August and will concentrate
on collecting the thoughts of a cross section of our
membership to assist in guiding a completed marketing
analysis and business plan. The groups will be composed of
8-10 people and will last for approximately 75 minutes. If
contacted, please try to set aside the time to add your input
into this process. And if you’re not contacted but want to
participate, please contact me. It is the intent of the Board
of Directors to be able to have the strategic plan
completed and presented to you at this year’s Annual
Shareholder’s meeting on Wednesday, November 4, 2015.
Frank’s Been Busy: Frank Cusumano is keeping Norwood in
the positive spotlight via print, radio, television, and hands
on. He emceed our 5th Annual Scholarship Scramble on
Monday, July 6th, and what a great job he did. He kept the
sold out golfing attendance entertained throughout the
event and has promised his services to the yearly event for
years to come.
St. Louis Club Reciprocals: Just a reminder that we have a
standing dining reciprocity agreement with the St. Louis Club
for every Monday throughout the year, but only on
Mondays. You can call to make your own reservations by
identifying yourself as a Norwood members and giving them
your number.
Don’t Believe Everything You Hear: McGladrey LLP, one of
the nation’s leading tax and consulting services recently
published an annual report on private clubs in Florida. It
used the term “flourishing” to describe operations, adding
42% of clubs in Florida, the state with the highest
concentration of private clubs, plan significant
improvements projects and at an average cost of $6.9
million and that clubs are rapidly refilling their membership
numbers. Things are looking up after a long and difficult
period.
Looks like it’s finally stopped raining and the St. Louis summer
temperatures are back - enjoy your club.

How often do you visit your local Farmer’s Market?
Turns out there are lots of great benefits that impact your
family, as well as your environment from buying local
produce! Buying from the local farmer cuts out the
middle man producing a higher profit for the farmer, who
then circulates his profits into the community creating a
cycle that helps build a strong local economy. Local
farmers also ensure healthier and better tasting food,
which is always great for a growing family. Best of all,
buying local means the food doesn’t have to travel far,
reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials.
There are many great options in the St. Louis area, and
we encourage everyone to try one out this weekend. The
Soulard Market is a great option and is open every
Saturday offering all kinds of fresh products from fruits
and vegetables, to spices and sweets.
As summer comes to a close, many of our
lifeguards return to college or high school
along with most of our members children.

Did you know…The Missouri Amateur Championship was
held last month. Norwood’s favorite Amateur still holds 2
records in the Amateur. Bob Cochran holds the record
for Most WINS (1931-1973) 78 wins and only 27 losses
and Most Appearances (Cuts made to Match Play) 31
(1931-1973).
Bob was elected to the Missouri
Golf Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Bob’s widow
Kathleen is still a Norwood member.

I am certain everyone has been treasuring and/or enduring this lovely (HOT but oh so rainy…) weather. I can’t believe we are entering what many consider to be the
“final” month of the summer season. Labor Day and
families heading back to school are both just around the
corner…During the past few months, the Pro Shop has
been a busy place. Thanks to all of you who have made
purchases this season. The response to the new apparel
lines we have begun carrying as well as our “tried and
true standbys” in the Shop has been wonderful. We all in
the Pro Shop really appreciate your support!

MEN’S & LADIES’
RANDOM HANDICAP QUESTIONS...AND ANSWERS
Over the past couple of months, I have heard (overheard) a
number of questions about handicaps and thought I would
address a few of them.
Q.
When I look up my handicap on the GHIN system there is a
“Trend Handicap”, what is it?
A.
The Trend Handicap is the unofficial estimate of your
handicap. It includes un-reviewed scores posted since the
previous revision. As much as I would like to use my trend
during some matches, it is nothing more than an indicator of
what you next revision will look like.
Q.
Is there a maximum handicap index for men and women?
A.
The maximum Handicap Index for men is 36.4 and 40.4 for
women.
Q.
Can the Handicap Committee adjust a Handicap index for an
injured player?
A.
Yes! The Handicap Committee can grant an increase in
handicap for temporary and permanent disabilities (as
determined by the committee). The increased handicap must
be identified by the letter “L” to indicate that it is for club use
only.
Example: A player being treated for a wrist injury may be
given a higher handicap while recovering. Whether it is a
temporary or permanent adjustment, and the amount of
the adjustment, is to be determined at the club level by
the player’s Handicap Committee.
For the sake of full disclosure, I am asking the last question on
my own behalf. I am recovering from a Bursitis in one shoulder
and have developed some other joint issues in my hands & wrists.
Hopefully, the rheumatologist comes up with a solution soon, as I
haven’t been able to play in about 6 weeks.
My question to you is… Do you think that my golfing group will
recognize my medically adjusted Handicap when I return to
playing?
As always, if you have any handicap questions, send me an email at
[email protected] or stop by the pro shop.

Norwood News, August 2015
We are hitting the home stretch of the 2015 golf season. The
season seems though, as it has only just begun. The rains lasted
from April through July, making the season feel like perpetual
spring, and now we are talking about the end of the season,
and the best time of the year to golf, the fall.
The rains have been a major issue this season, making it difficult
to stay on regular maintenance schedules, often going for ten
days at a time without being able to get mowers out of the
shed. Of course this meant we were unable to get carts off the
path as well. This is never an enjoyable situation for me. I do not
like to tell people they can't get off the path when I know that it
means they can't play. Yet I know it is my responsibility to take
care of the courses for the entire membership as well.
The heat and humidity has made it a good season for the zoysia once it finally got going in
June. All the rain has not been good for the cool weather grasses though. All the excess
water causes the cool season grasses to have their roots near the soil surface. When it gets
hot, the plants don't have roots deep enough to draw the moisture they need to respire and
survive. To compound the situation, the moisture and humidity is the ideal environment for
funguses that kill these grasses to thrive and do their dirty work. This will be evident in areas of
the rough around the grounds.
The bent-grass greens being a cool season grass are on a preventive fungicide program.
Even so, at the one-eighth inch mowing height, are susceptible to a myriad of problems
under these weather conditions, and the guys will be working very hard to nurse them
through the month of August. By the end of August, day lengths are getting significantly
shorter, and maintaining greens becomes much easier.
Maintaining green speeds and firmness through the rains has been difficult too. Not being
able to keep on schedules has meant we could not top-dress, roll, and mow at regular
intervals. Add this to the fact that the grass is growing faster than normal, greens tend to get
"puffy" in our region.
Through all this I think the guys did a wonderful job preparing the courses on the days we
were afforded the opportunity to get equipment out of the door. Despite spending three to
four days a week shoveling bunkers for six weeks. It felt a lot like the movie "Ground Hog Day"
with Bill Murray. I'm hoping for a dry August, and looking forward to September and October
for some really good golf.
