Turns out there are lots of great benefits that impact your family, as well as your environment from buying local produce! Buying from the local farmer cuts out the middle man producing a higher profit for the farmer, who then circulates his profits into the community creating a cycle that helps build a strong local economy. Local farmers also ensure healthier and better tasting food, which is always great for a growing family. Best of all, buying local means the food doesn’t have to travel far, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials. There are many great options in the St. Louis area, and we encourage everyone to try one out this weekend. The Soulard Market is a great option and is open every Saturday offering all kinds of fresh products from fruits and vegetables, to spices and sweets. As summer comes to a close, many of our lifeguards return to college or high school along with most of our members children. Norwood News, August 2015 Page 9 MEN’S & LADIES’ RANDOM HANDICAP QUESTIONS...AND ANSWERS Over the past couple of months, I have heard (overheard) a number of questions about handicaps and thought I would address a few of them. Q. When I look up my handicap on the GHIN system there is a “Trend Handicap”, what is it? A. The Trend Handicap is the unofficial estimate of your handicap. It includes un-reviewed scores posted since the previous revision. As much as I would like to use my trend during some matches, it is nothing more than an indicator of what you next revision will look like. Q. Is there a maximum handicap index for men and women? A. The maximum Handicap Index for men is 36.4 and 40.4 for women. Q. Can the Handicap Committee adjust a Handicap index for an injured player? A. Yes! The Handicap Committee can grant an increase in handicap for temporary and permanent disabilities (as determined by the committee). The increased handicap must be identified by the letter “L” to indicate that it is for club use only. Example: A player being treated for a wrist injury may be given a higher handicap while recovering. Whether it is a temporary or permanent adjustment, and the amount of the adjustment, is to be determined at the club level by the player’s Handicap Committee. For the sake of full disclosure, I am asking the last question on my own behalf. I am recovering from a Bursitis in one shoulder and have developed some other joint issues in my hands & wrists. Hopefully, the rheumatologist comes up with a solution soon, as I haven’t been able to play in about 6 weeks. My question to you is… Do you think that my golfing group will recognize my medically adjusted Handicap when I return to playing? As always, if you have any handicap questions, send me an email at [email protected] or stop by the pro shop. -Chuck Pecher, Handicap Chair Page 10 AUGUST 15TH & 16TH 36 Holes Stroke Play on the East and West Courses on Saturday and Sunday, August 15th &16th Entry deadline is August 13th, 2015 at 12:00pm The Pro Shop will pair by flight and assign tee times which will be posted in the Pro Shop. Tee times begin at 7:00am on both courses in threesomes with 10 minute intervals. All flights will be determined by handicap index. Tees will be based on Flights. August 1st Handicap re vis io n will be u s e d f or Championship. Any player has the option to play in the Championship flight. Call the Pro Shop at 314-521-4802 or log onto the website to register. HUCK’S TOURNAMENT RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 17th Just a reminder that both courses will be closed on Thursday, September 17th as the Huck’s Convenience Tournament returns to Norwood. This annual tournament has helped pay for club improvements such as the new scoreboard and the exterior renovation of the West Shack. Norwood News, August 2015 We are hitting the home stretch of the 2015 golf season. The season seems though, as it has only just begun. The rains lasted from April through July, making the season feel like perpetual spring, and now we are talking about the end of the season, and the best time of the year to golf, the fall. The rains have been a major issue this season, making it difficult to stay on regular maintenance schedules, often going for ten days at a time without being able to get mowers out of the shed. Of course this meant we were unable to get carts off the path as well. This is never an enjoyable situation for me. I do not like to tell people they can't get off the path when I know that it means they can't play. Yet I know it is my responsibility to take care of the courses for the entire membership as well. The heat and humidity has made it a good season for the zoysia once it finally got going in June. All the rain has not been good for the cool weather grasses though. All the excess water causes the cool season grasses to have their roots near the soil surface. When it gets hot, the plants don't have roots deep enough to draw the moisture they need to respire and survive. To compound the situation, the moisture and humidity is the ideal environment for funguses that kill these grasses to thrive and do their dirty work. This will be evident in areas of the rough around the grounds. The bent-grass greens being a cool season grass are on a preventive fungicide program. Even so, at the one-eighth inch mowing height, are susceptible to a myriad of problems under these weather conditions, and the guys will be working very hard to nurse them through the month of August. By the end of August, day lengths are getting significantly shorter, and maintaining greens becomes much easier. Maintaining green speeds and firmness through the rains has been difficult too. Not being able to keep on schedules has meant we could not top-dress, roll, and mow at regular intervals. Add this to the fact that the grass is growing faster than normal, greens tend to get "puffy" in our region. Through all this I think the guys did a wonderful job preparing the courses on the days we were afforded the opportunity to get equipment out of the door. Despite spending three to four days a week shoveling bunkers for six weeks. It felt a lot like the movie "Ground Hog Day" with Bill Murray. I'm hoping for a dry August, and looking forward to September and October for some really good golf. -Mike Null, Grounds Superintendent Norwood News, August 2015 Page 11 CONTACT INFORMATION #1 NORWOOD HILLS COUNTRY CLUB DRIVE SAINT LOUIS, MISSOURI 63121 GOLF SHOP & GOLF SERVICES 314.521.4802 Fax: 314.521.6150 CLUBHOUSE 314.521.0682 Fax: 314.521.0792 WEBSITE www.norwoodhills.com Follow us on: Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedIn You Tube CLUBHOUSE OFFICE Monday - Friday 8:00am to 3:00pm FAIRWAY LOUNGE Tuesday - Wednesday Thursday - Saturday Sunday 11:00am to 12:00am 11:00am to 1:30am 11:00am to 10:00pm FAIRWAY GRILLE Tuesday - Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Breakfast Sunday Brunch Sunday Lunch Sunday Dinner 11:00am to 9:00pm 11:00am to 9:30pm 7:00am to 9:30pm 7:00am to 12:00pm 10:00am to 2:00pm 12:00pm to 4:00pm 4:00pm to 8:00pm MEN’S 19TH HOLE Tuesday Wednesday - Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 11:30am to 6:00pm 11:30am to 9:00pm 11:30am to 6:00pm 10:30am to 6:00pm 10:30am to 5:00pm FITNESS CENTER Tuesday - Friday Saturday - Sunday 6:00am to 9:00pm 6:00am to 9:00pm (No Free Weights After 4pm on Sat/Sun) GOLF SHOP Tuesday - Friday Saturday - Sunday First Tee Time 7:00am to 6:00pm 6:30am to 6:00pm 7:30am Weekdays 7:00am Weekends GOLF CONCESSION STANDS Tuesday - Sunday 8:00am - 5:00pm Weather Permitting TENNIS COURTS Tuesday-Sunday 8:00am to Dusk SWIMMING POOL Tuesday-Sunday 10:00am to 8:00pm SWIMMING POOL CONCESSIONS Tuesday-Sunday 10:00am to 7:30pm VERANDA Tuesday - Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 11:00am to 9:00pm 11:00am to 9:30pm 7:00am to 9:30pm 7:00am to 8:00pm WEST PATIO AND FRINGE Friday 5:00pm to 12:00am ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Norwood Hills Country Club One Norwood Hills Country Club Drive Saint Louis, MO 63121 Page 12
