our Civil War—which lasted four years at
approximately $2.5 million per day. The
Bureau of Internal Revenue was established
by an Act of Congress on the same day. Woohoo! What a coincidence that the first of July
is also International Joke Day, so in that
spirit here’s one. Why should tax forms be
printed on Kleenex? It’s because so many
of us have to pay through the nose. And
speaking of tax forms, our tax code in 1913
was 400 pages and today it has grown to over
70,000.
Tax day was originally in April, then
changed to March 1st, then March 15th, and
finally moved to April 15th in 1955 where
it remains. The IRS claims this was done to
spread out the workload for their employees.
However, tax experts suggest that the date
was pushed back to give our government
more time to hold on to our money. That
sounds reasonable although holding on to
my little bit of money won’t do them much
good. In fact it probably gives them a good
laugh when they receive my tax forms.
But enough about taxes. July 11th
is Cheer Up the Lonely Day, so just do it.
Look around. Find someone who’s lonely,
depressed, feeling down, and take that
person to Bingo with you. Buy the cards,
spring for some refreshments; spend some
quality time talking before and after the
Bingo session. Not only will you feel better
yourself, you will have done a good deed in
a way that truly counts in the book of life.

Why am I writing about taxes in July
instead of April? Well, it’s taken me since
April 24th, Tax Freedom Day, to dry my
tears and stop cursing the IRS. Tax Freedom
Day is significant because it represents how
long Americans as a whole have to work in
order to pay our nation’s tax burden. I’ll bet
that bit of info lifts your spirits; that it took
124 days to earn enough to offset your taxes
for this year. If it depresses you as it did me,
maybe this will cheer you up. If you want to be
a snitch and report someone for tax evasion
in the U.S. and it leads to a conviction, you
can get up to 30% of the amount collected.
On the other hand, this will depress you big
time. A few years ago, General Electric paid
no taxes on $10.3 billion dollars by offsetting
losses from another GE division.
On July 1, 1862, the first income tax bill
was signed by President Lincoln. It levied
a 3% income tax on annual incomes of
$600-$10,000 and a 5% tax on incomes

Opposites attract?
We got an e-mail from Charlene the
same day we got a letter from Lena both
saying they wanted to come for a visit—
at the same time. Kate and I talked it
over and decided we could handle them
both although they are as different as
chalk and cheese and would want to
do very different things. For instance,
Lena loves the dice tables or slots
while Charlene abhors anything like
gambling. She would much rather shop,
especially if a quilt store is available.
They both love to eat so they do have
that much in common, although
Charlene is very hefty while Lena is a
little bitty thing no bigger than she was in
high school.
Lena flew in from the south while
Charlene drove a much shorter distance
from the east. They arrived the same day
and I kept telling myself I was ready for
whatever happened.
It turned out very well. The women
knew each other and that helped, plus
they were both very glad to see us and find
us all hale and hearty.
The first night I treated us all to
Chinese and that went very well. They
like our local Chinese restaurant and the
food is abundant.
We have only one guest room,
but the visiting ladies did not want to
share it. Lena insisted she could sleep
comfortably with me. I did not want this
as I do not sleep well with anyone in my
bed, but Lena simply moved into my
room and I was stuck with her. I didn’t
sleep well.
The next day I planned a shopping trip
in the morning, as I knew Lena would
tolerate that better than later in the day
when she tends to get cranky. We went to
a newly opened general store and I gave
them a list of three things I was looking
for to keep them occupied. Kate opted
out of this excursion, but I figured to get
even later in the visit. They shopped like
good fellows and quickly found two of the
three items I had specified.
The third, a small cabinet for my
bathroom, they could not find so we
gave up and I took them to lunch where
we ran across a friend of mine who is
a photographer, but did not have her
camera with her. She did, however, take
pictures of the three of us with her cell
phone saying she would e-mail them to
me.
After a fine lunch we went home to play
pinochle—which is a passion for both
of them. Lena could not seem to get any
decent cards so we quickly gave up the
game.
The next day was Bingo! Charlene was
a little hesitant, but Kate got her going
and soon she was absorbed in the game.
She chanted for her number and was
ecstatic when she won. Lena was having
a great time and was on several times
before she finally won a small jackpot. I
was delighted and so was Kate.
Then, as we were leaving, Lena insisted
she could risk her winnings on the slot
machines, but Charlene would have
nothing to do with those devil machines
and so opted to sit in the sunshine with
her knitting.
Lena quickly lost her winnings and
we were off home. I sort of enjoyed their
visit and hope they will come again, but
please, please not at the same time.

n First-time tourney player can’t wait to go again

Since 2011, Kim Pamphilis of South
Pasadena, California, and her family have
been exploring the fun and excitement
of cruise vacations. “We fell in love with
cruising from the start,” Kim says. “It is
so enjoyable to go from point A to point B
without having to rush around and pack and
unpack. The ship takes you everywhere you
want to go.”
Kim’s cruise experience took a different
turn in 2014 when her friend, Del Moore,
approached her about going with her on the
World Championship Bingo Tournament
& Gaming Cruise. Kim says that Del had
tried to pull together a group for the Bingo
Bugle Cruise in 2013, but their plans fell
through. “Del and I enjoy travel and we both
love to play Bingo,” Kim says. “The idea of a
cruise combined with a Bingo Tournament
sounded great to me.”
Kim was also curious about what it would
be like to go on a cruise with friends instead
of family. “You feel responsible for everyone
on a family vacation, always worrying that
everyone is being looked after and having a
good time,” she says. “With friends there is
less of that. It’s easier to relax.”
A third friend, Mimi Weiner, joined Kim
and Del on the Bingo cruise, and the three
Bingo buddies soon found themselves flying
to Florida and joining the rest of the 2014
Tournament Cruise crowd. By the end of the
Tournament, Kim had won $1,200 in the
first Bingo session and another $300 in pull
tabs; Mimi had won a $1,200 Bingo pot, a
$700 Flash game, and the $1,500 second
prize in the Sizzling Slots tournament; while
Del did her winning at the roulette table in
the ship’s casino.
Away from the tournament, Kim enjoyed
visiting the ports of call. “We did a two-hour
bus tour at one of the ports, but for the most
part preferred to be on our own just walking
around, shopping, trying the local food and
chatting with the local people,” she says.
The three had such a good time, in fact,
that they signed on for the 2015 World
Championship Bingo & Gaming Cruise,
which will sail the eastern Caribbean and
visit the ports of St. Maarten, Antigua, St.
Thomas and Nassau, The Bahamas.
“I was impressed with how well the
Tournament was run,” Kim says. “The
staff was great. It was different from other
tournaments I’ve played in. There were no
machines with people playing 50 packs; it
was all very fair and equal. Everybody had the
same number of sheets and the same amount
of chances to win.”

We have a little bit of a debate going on
here about the Bingo manager’s family
members playing Bingo at the hall he heads.
There are four of them and they appear to
win a lot. The Bingo system is computerized
so I don’t see how they could have any kind
of advantage, but it seems like they win more
than anyone else. —LGG, via email
Hi LGG,
This is an issue that comes up from time to
time—an impression by players that certain
people must somehow be getting some kind
of advantage that allows them to win more.
Let me start out by saying that a lot
of work has gone into the development
of computerized Bingo gaming to guard
against cheating. This leaves the only
possible advantage as frequency—people
going more often and playing more cards
than their competitors. But even then, the
odds of any particular number coming up is
even across the board.
Your letter does highlight an important
point, however. You say that in the eyes of
players, the manager’s family members
“appear” to win a lot. It is really an
impression you are talking about, brought
about by the familial relationship.
I think every Bingo manager should think
twice about allowing family members and
close friends play Bingo at the halls they
manage. Time and time again it results in
bad feelings for players who think something
suspicious or “insider” is going on.
Bingo is a gaming competition where
money is involved and tensions may
sometimes run high. The last thing a Bingo
hall manager should want to do is fuel that
tension with suspicion. —Guy

My wife, Sue, and I took a trip to England
and France this past spring. It was a guided
tour that lasted three weeks and included
some down time so that people in the tour
group could break away and do something
on their own if they wanted to.

Hannibal returned to NBC in June for its
third season, where you can see Gillian as
Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier. You’ll recall at the
end of last season, she and Hannibal Lector
(Mads Mikkelsen) were fleeing to France.
It was recently announced that Gillian
will co-star in the Lifetime/A&E/History
networks’ joint production of War and
Peace, which is based on the classic novel by
Leo Tolstoy.
Anderson is also set to return for season
three of the fantastic BBC2 psychologicalthriller series The Fall, which should air
sometime in 2016. The Fall also stars Fifty
Shades of Grey heartthrob Jamie Dornan.
Q: Can you give me any news about the
next American Horror Story? —Nina D.,

A: The list of big names who have signed
on to star in American Horror Story: Hotel
keeps getting bigger. I previously reported
that Lady Gaga, Chloe Sevigny, Kathy Bates,
Evan Peters, Wes Bentley, Matt Bomer,
Cheyenne Jackson and Sara Paulson were
we got the chance, we’d try our hand at Bingo
while we were in England. We actually got
the idea from the Bingo Bugle and the stories
we sometimes see in it about British Bingo
games.
We asked a desk clerk about it and she
said there were lots of places in and around
London to play Bingo. She suggested we try
one of the large Bingo houses because of
the many games and large payouts, which
sounded perfect to us.
Some other people on the tour decided to
come along with us, so we were about 10 or
12 total. The hotel offered to shuttle us to a
big Bingo that was 20 minutes away. We were
glad for the free ride!
When we got to the hall it was indeed quite
large (apparently in England there are a
number of companies that run chains of
Bingo halls that operate throughout the
country) and buzzing with energy. As
it turned out, our shuttle driver was a big
Bingo fan and he took us in, helped us get
our Bingo paper and find seats, and joined
us for the games. We were lucky to have him:
They may speak English in England, but
the accents sometimes made it difficult to
understand what was being said. I think we
would have been a little stressed out trying
to figure out what was going on without the
driver’s help.
None of us won that night, but it was still
one of the highlights of our trip. I encourage
everybody to look into Bingo when they

That does sound like quite an adventure. I
have yet to play Bingo internationally (unless
you count playing on a cruise ship) and very
much look forward to doing so someday.
Your letter serves as an excellent guide
on how to do it, too: Try and get a group
of people to go together, ask the hotel to
suggest destinations, see if the hotel is
willing to transport you, and, best of all, ask
if the hotel has a staff member who can escort
you and show you the ropes.
Even if none of the above is possible,
there’s also nothing wrong with having the
hotel find the closest Bingo venue and then
just grabbing a cab and heading off on your
own.

announced that Angela Bassett has been
added to the hotel’s registry. Rumors have
been swirling that Alexander Skarsgard and
Michelle Pfeiffer also would be on the show,
however, that casting news is looking more
and more to be a red herring, unfortunately.

Sexual Assault Rates
A new RAND study for the Defense
Department concludes that cases of sexual
assault in the military are down, but that
reporting of those assaults is up.
More than half a million active and reserve
service members were invited to participate in
the Military Workplace Study, and 170,000
responded. The study measured sexual
assault, sexual harassment (sexually hostile
work environment, sexual coercion) and
gender discrimination. The numbers are bad.
Over 20,000 service members were
sexually assaulted in the past year, 10,600
men and 9,600 women. With activity-duty
personnel, 90 percent occurred in a military
setting or were perpetrated by military
personnel. Reserve personal had lower rates
of assault, but 81 percent of assailants were
military and it occurred in a military setting
63 percent of the time.
Men experienced “multiple incidents in
the past year,” were assaulted by multiple
offenders during a single incident and were
assaulted at work during duty hours. Men
preferred to describe the events as hazing or
abuse or humiliation, and were less likely to
report the incidents.
RAND estimated that 116,000 service
members were assaulted in the past year, 22
percent of women and 7 percent of men.
Of women who reported an assault,
52 percent believe there was retaliation
afterward. That, however, isn’t the reason
most didn’t report the incident. Instead they
wanted to forget it and move on. While the
number of assaults has decreased, the rate of
retaliation has not.
The Air Force had lower rates of assault
than the other branches, where women had
1.7 times the risk of assault and men had 4 to 5
times the risk.

School Bingo Regrets
The Conway, Arkansas, school
district says it regrets a Bingo game
played among teachers who marked
spaces based on a student’s appearance,
Arkanasamatters.com reported. “Too
much makeup,” “Unnatural hair color
or extensions,” “Drawn on eyebrows”
and “Crying” were just some of the boxes
teachers sought to mark off to get Bingo.
“We regret the decision that was made to
make and distribute this Bingo Card…
High School Administration resolved
this issue immediately,” Conway Schools
superintendent Dr. Greg Murry said in a
statement. School administrators say
resolving the issue with the teachers did not
involve a punishment, and that no prizes
were given out to Bingo winners.
Bingo & Burgers by the Bay
The third annual Bingo & Burgers by the
Bay in Excelsior, Minnesota, saw an excellent
turnout as people came to enjoy burgers,
Bingo, beer and wine, and live music—all
to raise money for the city’s Fourth of July
fireworks display. The event was sponsored
by the Lake Minnetonka Excelsior Rotary,
with help from Maynards Restaurant and
Excelsior Brewing Co. The Excelsior-Lake
Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce also
participated in the event. “We look at
this as a fun way to raise funds and bring
awareness to projects the Lake Minnetonka
Excelsior Rotary supports,” said Rotary
President-Elect Dave Petroske. Rotary
initiatives include the fireworks, Tasks
Unlimited, Inc., Lake Minnetonka Excelsior
Rotary Foundation and the Mitten Pond
rehabilitation project.

Quebec Province, Canada, Bingo hall
owners are hoping Finance Minister Carlos
Leitao will breathe new life into their
industry and give them the go-ahead to start
a pilot project that would see electronic
Bingo and other gaming added in some halls
across Quebec. Almost half of Bingo revenue
goes to Quebec charities, but the amount of
money halls are raising has declined. “We
have to do something in the short term, or
we won’t be in business for long,” Benoit
Bougie, who owns five Bingo halls in and
around Montreal, told CBC News. Bougie
and others are pinning their hopes on a trial
that would allow them to offer electronic
Bingo and other gaming in their halls. But
they need the finance minister’s approval.
They already have the support of the Public
Safety Minister Lise Thériault, who oversees
Bingo licenses. She wrote a letter to Leitao
encouraging him to give the go ahead. In her
letter, Thériault said 800 charities depend
on Bingo revenue. “I’m sure that, like other
provinces, it will be profitable for charities
and the owner,” says Bougie, whose family
started its Bingo business as a fundraiser in
a church basement more than 40 years ago.
A World of Peas
While we are one big United States, the
vastness and diversity of our country is most
obvious in the food we eat. While we all salute
the same flag, when it comes to food, we
form smaller, ferociously loyal groups. Our
culinary inheritance was granted to us by the
distinct land that each of us calls home, and
the place where we took our first bites.
There are certain foods that are native
to a New Englander’s dinner table -- food
that for decades, even centuries, sustained
a whole line of Pilgrims -- that someone
from Colorado wouldn’t consider eating.
Historically, there were many good reasons
for that.
Today, there are even more reasons to
appreciate the different foods that are
common to our particular part of the
continent. Thanks to the farm-to-table
movement, we are all coming to understand
the true value of eating local, and cooking
with what is available in our area.
If you are a Southerner, you’ve probably
had more than one bowl of Purple Hull
peas. They are a cultivar of a bigger family
of Southern peas, or cow peas. Most people
have heard of its more popular cousin, the
black-eyed pea, even if they’ve never spent
New Year’s Day boiling up a pot flavored
with a smoked ham hock. In the South, we
also enjoy chowder peas, cream peas and the
more exotic pink-eye. Many times, people
from this region refer to the whole lot of
them as “peas,” which someone from the
North would strongly disagree with.
It’s all a little confusing, with so many
similar types that are each slightly different
from the other. Especially since all of them
are not really peas by botanical definition, and chopped
but beans. Peas also possess all the wonderful 1

Dear Readers: A few issues ago, I invited
readers to send in stories of their earliest
recollections of Bingo. The invitation
generated a lot of responses, with letters still
coming in! Following are some of the tales
you shared. —Aunt Bingo
Dear Aunt Bingo,
My earliest memory of playing Bingo was
as a Brownie.
The mothers of the troop members took
turns hosting meetings at their homes every
few weeks. At one house, one of the girls’
mothers took us to the basement family
room and handed out cardboard Bingo cards
from a boxed set. She had a little metal cage
that spun wooden balls with the numbers on
them. As she called the numbers, we covered
them with un-popped popcorn kernels.
I remember it vividly because I was the first
one to get a Bingo. It was also the first game I
had ever won which came with a prize. After
I called Bingo, our hostess brought out a
basket of wrapped gifts and told me I could
choose any one I wanted as my prize. Let me
tell you…the troop really perked up when
they saw all those prizes!
Naturally, I reached for the biggest prize.
The whole troop hushed as they waited to see
what I’d won. I unfolded the tissue paper to
reveal a glossy white ceramic horse dotted
with pink and yellow rosebuds. It was the
most beautiful thing I had ever seen!
Dear Aunt Bingo,
My earliest Bingo memory is of playing at
an ice cream social in the parking lot behind
the local high school.
It was a beautiful, breezy summer day.
We each had a ticket for one cupcake (home
baked by the mothers), a scoop of ice cream
(spooned out of big cardboard drums by the
fathers), and one Bingo card. The Bingo was
only for the kids.
Once we were served, we were led to long
folding tables where we ate our cupcakes
and ice cream and pretended to play Bingo,
although it was really our parents who were
playing our cards for us. Prizes were penny
candy, small toys, and tickets for more cake
and ice cream. I won a red plastic folding
Chinese fan with a black silk tassel, which I
treasured.
This is one of my favorite childhood

Dear Aunt Bingo,
I knew of Bingo as a kid’s game, but
it wasn’t until I was away at college that I
experienced my first “money” game.
A friend who was a big Bingo fan invited a
few of us to go with him to a church Bingo one
evening. When we arrived, the townspeople
there seemed pretty happy to see us joining
them for Bingo instead of heading downtown
to one of the bars.
I recall that it didn’t cost much to buy-in.
We played on cardboard cards and covered
the numbers with little red plastic chips.
Most of the evening was uneventful, until
about halfway through the 10th or 11th
game when my friend Elise tapped my arm
anxiously and pointed to her card. She had a
Bingo.

Atlantic City. Another month, another
purchase of the Revel casino by Florida
developer Glenn Straub. This one’s
for real, however, and Straub is now
attempting to buy the Showboat and possibly
additional properties as part of a city-wide
redevelopment he’s calling “The Phoenix
Project,” complete details of which are,
naturally, yet to come.
Louisiana. A full smoking ban is now in
effect in New Orleans, affecting bars, hotels,
workplaces, private clubs, stores, and
casinos.
Native American. Tribal casinos
generated a gambling win of $28.3 billion in
2013, a marginal .5% increase over 2012, but
still a single-year record. The win came from
“Call it!” I told her. Elise was pretty shy
and just looked at me with huge eyes and
shook her head. “I can’t,” she whispered
back.
“B-9!” The caller called another number.
Luckily, no else had Bingo. Elise looked at
me and implored, “Help me!”
“BINGO!” I called so loud that it made
everyone at our table jump and most
everyone else in the room snicker. “BINGO!
BINGO! BINGO!”
Elise’s face flushed red with excitement
and embarrassment as they confirmed her
card was a winner.
She won $25—and swore she would never

Bingo Rights
As we Americans celebrate our
Independence Day, it is good to remember a
bit of the obscure history that prompted such
a monumental break with Great Britain.
Actually the separation was a long time
coming. It all started with a Seven Years War.
It had been a financially brutal war and Great
Britain needed money.
That was when Parliamentary Bingo was
invented. In the beginning our favorite game
was called Beano because the numbers were
secured with ordinary beans. Beano proved
to be lucrative and Great Britain began to
recover from the great recession. Naturally,
the colonists brought the game with them,
but since there were no beans here at the
time, they used corn to cover the numbers.
The Indians, who supplied the corn at first,
didn’t play the game as they had no need of
British cash, but they paid attention to how it
was done, for future reference.
After a year or so the Colonists noticed
that Great Britain was beginning to feel the
need to control them more and more and
it angered them. There was the Stamp Act,
the tax on tea fiasco, the gouging on prices
of commodities from the Motherland, and
now this new demand for a cut of their Bingo
proceeds. The Colonists finally decided that
enough was enough.
In 1774, Thomas Jefferson declared
the British Parliament had no legitimate
jurisdiction over the Colonies. After
an eighteen-month war against British
nationals, the thirteen Colonies became
the original thirteen States and our country
became the United States of America.
Jefferson convinced the States that we have
some inalienable rights…life, liberty, Bingo
and the pursuit of happiness.
And now you know the rest of the story.

Japan. Action toward legalizing gambling
in Japan is picking up again. A bill that
would enable legalization is pending, and if
it passes, a second statute outlining specific
rules and logistical details would have to
be created and passed. The first part of
the process is expected to come into focus
this month and shine a light on realistic
prospects and timetables.
Online. Morgan Stanley has drastically
downsized its expectations for the U.S.
online gambling market. The investment
firm issued a report cutting its estimate for
2020 from $5 billion to $2.7 billion. Nearer
term, the estimate for 2017 is $410 million,
down from $1.3 billion. The report predicts
that no new states will begin operations this
year, but that California, Pennsylvania, New
York, and Illinois will legalize some form
of online gambling “within a few years.”
One development that will have a positive
effect on online gambling’s prospects is a
return of PokerStars to the market, and that
may be close to happening. Amaya Gaming,
owners of PokerStars, says it “expects to be
up and running” in New Jersey by this fall,
and is working to be licensed in California
when online gaming is approved there. A
daily fantasy sports (“DFS”) product to be
released under the PokerStars brand is also
in the works.

Dear Savvy Senior,
Can you write a column
alerting seniors to the dangers of
summertime heat? I manage a
number of urgent care clinics, and
last summer we had more than 200
cases of heat-related illnesses, most
of who were seniors. I would like to
reduce that this year.
Concerned Citizen
Dear Concerned,
I certainly can. Most people don’t
realize that extreme summer heat
causes thousands of heat-related
illnesses in the U.S. each year, and
kills more people than hurricanes,
lightning, tornadoes, floods and
earthquakes combined, and seniors
are among the most vulnerable.
The reasons behind this are
because of the body’s ability to
regulate temperature through blood
circulation and sweat glands tends
to decline with age. Bodies of older
adults also contain far less water
than a younger person, and older
brains don’t recognize thirst as
easily, making them more likely to
get dehydrated.
In addition, many seniors have
certain health problems that can
increase their risk of hyperthermia
(when the body overheats). These
include:
• Underlying diseases like
congestive heart failure, diabetes
and chronic obstructive pulmonary
need requires. Think of all the energy you’ll
conserve!

If you, or someone you know is
experiencing these symptoms, call
911 immediately because heat
stroke is a medical emergency.
Heat exhaustion is milder and
can develop after several days of
exposure to high temperatures.

tiredness, weakness, fainting,
dizziness, headache, and nausea or
vomiting.
What to Do
If you think you may be suffering
from a heat-related condition, cool
yourself down by going indoors into
air conditioning, remove or loosen
any tight-fitting or heavy clothing,
drink plenty of water (but avoid
alcohol and caffeine), take a cool
bath or shower, or apply cold water,
ice packs or cold compresses to
your skin.
And when you do go out in the
heat, be sure to dress in lightweight,
light-colored, loose-fitting clothing,
avoid extended periods of sun
exposure and drink plenty of water

In 2007, researchers using Google Earth discovered the
world’s largest beaver dam. Located in the wilderness of
northern Canada, the dam is more than a half-mile long
at 2,790 feet; experts estimate the structure was started in the
mid-1970s.
…The U.S.S. Iowa holds the distinction of being the only
American naval ship to have a bathtub.
…You might think of Uncle Sam as a fictional character, but
he’s actually based in fact. The original Uncle Sam was one
Samuel Wilson, born in Massachusetts in 1766. When he
was 14 years old, he joined the army to fight in the American
Revolution. Once the war was over, he moved to Troy, N.Y.,
started working in the meat-packing industry, and became
known locally as “Uncle Sam” due to his jovial manner and
ethical business practices. During the War of 1812, Sam won a
contract to provide meat to troops stationed nearby. To keep
track of which crates of meat were destined for the troops,
he stamped “U.S.” on them, even though that abbreviation
for United States was not yet in common use. When his
packing plant was inspected in October of 1812, a government
inspector asked a nearby worker what “U.S.” stood for.
Unsure of the abbreviation himself, the worker replied that
it must stand for the name of the owner, Uncle Sam. Though
the answer was in error, it took hold, and soldiers soon began
calling military rations “bounty of Uncle Sam.”
