AUTUMN 2015 NEWSLETTER
Neighborhood Watch
Garden Party Thank Yous….
While the housing market is on the rise, several
empty homes remain within our Village. If you live
next door to a vacant property, kindly report any
suspicious activity in or around the home to police
and the Village Hal. HOAs should hold title holders
responsible for property maintenance issues,
whether this be former residents trying to sell, a
bank or other lender. The Village has stepped up
police patrols around vacant properties, but a
“neighborhood watch” lends an added layer of
comfort and safety to all.

Zoning Change
A Public Hearing was recently held to receive input
on a request to change the zoning on the parcel of
property at Darrel & Roberts Roads, north of Crossroads
Church. Currently it is zoned “General Business” and it
is requested to be changed to “Residential”. A concept
plan submitted shows the development of 11 homes,
similar in size and design to those currently adjacent to it
in Deer Grove. The developer is working with the
Village and the Deer Grove HOA to the benefit of all
parties.

Pumpkin Eaters!
Squirrels and raccoons have made pumpkins among
their favorite snacks this season!! To deter them in a
humane way, don’t use cayenne pepper or other drastic
measures. Try dousing your squash with one of the
following as a deterrent:
 Spray with vinegar
 Surround with dog hair
 Spray with hair spray and let dry—they don’t
like the crunchiness! (Dove Extra Hold is
especially recommended!)
 Eucalyptus and/or garlic oil—dab on or make a
spray of 1 part oil to 10 parts water
 Sprinkle blood meal around it (found at
nurseries) Don’t use more than 4 ounces per
square yard of soil though.
 Purchase a spray animal repellant from the store.
Make sure it contains “putrescent whole egg
solids” as critters can’t stand rotten eggs!
Fortunately, humans can only smell it for a short
time after it is sprayed where it remains pungent
for the critters!
These deterrents must be reapplied every few days
and after it rains for the first couple of weeks. After
that, weekly or even monthly as the critters learn to
stay away! Motion detector sprinklers also have a
great “training” effect & it’s fun to watch the show!

Don’t Get Skunked!
Occasional skunk sightings in a neighborhood need
not be cause for alarm! Because skunks are
nomadic, most concerns about them being under sheds,
porches, and out-buildings are resolved in due time:
skunks just move on. Skunks are beneficial to farmers,
gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large
numbers of agricultural and garden pests. Skunks are
mild mannered and will not spray unless surprised,
cornered, harmed or they need to protect their young. To
prevent damage to lawns—don’t over water as this
promotes worms and grubs near the lawn’s surface,
attracting skunks. Skunks tend to dig 1 to 3 inches only
were a grub is located (raccoons are the ones that roll or
shred the sod in their search!) Do not use pesticides to
eliminate grubs because of their toxic effect on the
environment, our water, people and animals. Try milky
spore instead (found at garden stores.) Natural spray
repellents as described in the previous “Pumpkin Eaters”
article can be used to encourage a skunk to move on.
