Annual Report
LIFTING UP THEIR VOICE TO BRIGHTEN THEIR FUTURE
Our Mission
Henrico CASA is a nonprofit organization committed to advocating for the best interests of children involved in the Juvenile and
Domestic Relations District Court
process. The CASA program recruits, trains, and supervises competent volunteers dedicated to
representing the needs of abused
and neglected children, as well as
other children in juvenile dependency proceedings.
CASA promotes safe, permanent
homes for all children and seeks
to educate the community concerning the needs of abused and
neglected children.
A Message From
Our Special Donor
Dear Friends,
Those who are in the trenches for CASA visiting families, interviewing
teachers and caregivers, and ultimately advocating in court are the true heroes and the backbone that makes our system work.
When the time came for me to step back as an advocate, after ten years of
service, I was fortunate to be able to support the very efficient and effective
staff who had supported me as a CASA volunteer. It gives my family great
pleasure to make a yearly gift to help with the annual fund that keeps the
office running. The less time staff spends raising next year’s budget, the
more time they have to do the good work of CASA. By donating, I know
that I am still part of this beautiful and necessary outreach to children in
need of help.
Sincerely,
Our Vision
Ann Ramsey
Henrico CASA’s vision is that
every child in Henrico County
lives in a safe and stable home.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS
In celebration of our twentieth year, Bluebird at the Hipp
was, in a word, extraordinary. Held on February 6, 2015,
Bluebird at the Hipp was a musical adventure designed in
the spirit of the Bluebird Café in Nashville where musicians
find a safe haven. The evening commemorated 20 years of
our advocates helping 2,325 abused and neglected children
find safe and permanent homes.
Thanks to the leadership of co-chairs, Lissy Bryan, Susan
Ewing, Pat Hackler, and Ann Ramsey, Henrico CASA
raised a record-breaking $74,366, netting enough dollars to
connect advocates with an additional 50 abused and neglected children in front of Henrico County’s Juvenile and
Domestic Relations Court.
The 250 supporters who were in attendance at the beautifully restored historic Hippodrome Theater enjoyed
signature cocktails, comfort food, an exciting silent auction,
artist-decorated birdhouses as table centerpieces, and
fabulous musical entertainment. Guests danced to the
music by performers Dane Ferguson, James and Emma,
and The Woodshedders.
We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to this
wonderful event! Major sponsors of Bluebird at the Hipp
were Patricia W. Hackler, Richmond Times-Dispatch,
Media General, McGuire Woods, NewMarket, Anonymous,
Virginia Green Lawn Care, Betty Baugh’s Animal Clinic,
Cobb Technologies, CSC Leasing Company, Farmer Properties, Inc., C.L. Hyman Auto Wholesale, Union First Market
Bank, Kinloch, Partner MD, Molly and Arthur Anderson,
Professional Governmental Underwriters, Inc., Pruitt Associates, Troutman Sanders, and Terrell and Elliott Harrigan.
The proceeds will help Henrico CASA continue to support
enough volunteers to serve all at-risk children who are
referred to our agency for advocacy services.

CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS
On November 6, 2014, a very special evening
was held to celebrate the work of our amazing
volunteers over the last twenty years. We thank
Jefferson Lakeside Country Club for hosting our
wonderful evening, and local bakeries for donating
cakes, desserts, and other goodies for our delicious
dessert bar. It was an evening of memories as we
applauded the many accomplishments of our
dedicated volunteers over the past twenty years.
Clockwise from Top: Melissa O’Neill, CASA Program State Coordinator and Fran Ecker, Director, Department of Criminal Justice Services;
beautiful food and décor set the tone of the evening; CASA volunteer Richard Davis; Board Director, Jon Ganues; beautiful cakes donated by
local bakeries; CASA volunteer Esther Snead and Executive Director, Barbara Herzog; the stunning Jefferson Lakeside Country Club.

CASA improves the effectiveness
of our juvenile justice system.
CASAs have the ability and the power to
transform children’s life stories for the
better. Through diligent investigation and
detailed research, CASAs write thorough
court reports and make critical
recommendations that give juvenile court
judges an inside, balanced look at their
assigned child’s situation. Many of the
decisions that judges make concerning a
child’s welfare, placement, therapies, or
services are based on CASA reports.

THESE ARE OUR MOMENTS
On August 26, 2014, we welcomed a very special
guest to Henrico County. K.L Randis, bestselling
author of Spilled Milk, traveled to Henrico to share
her personal story of sexual abuse at the hands of
her father and her inspirational triumph as a survivor.
Held at Belmont Recreation Center, Ms. Randis
spoke to a full room of CASAs, attorneys, social
workers, and interested citizens about her story. The
evening also included a reception and book signing.
Every day of the year, Jon
Ganues (left and pictured with
his wife and CASA volunteer,
Maria) and Chuck Ludwig
(below) are superheroes for
CASA. Chuck is a caring,
compassionate advocate and
Jon provides leadership by
serving on the Board of Directors. During the CASA
Superhero Run, Jon and Chuck
use their amazing alter-egos to
generate thousands of dollars to
ensure that all children who need
an advocate are provided a voice.
In April 2015, Rebecca Kalman-Winston (top), Case
Manager, and Debra Rogers (below), Development
Manager, joined Henrico CASA’s staff. Rebecca
began her career as a CPS investigator for Fairfax
County and eventually transitioned to administrative
support roles in nonprofits to help ensure programs are
well supported. Debra has over ten years of nonprofit
experience, including fundraising, special events, and
annual fund management. We are happy to have them
as part of our great team!
Patricia Hackler and Kevin Bruny (below) served
Henrico CASA for six years as members of our
Board of Directors. Kevin Bruny most recently
served as our Board President. We are thankful for
all of the years of guidance, time, and support that
both Pat and Kevin have donated to our agency. We
are thrilled that they will remain involved and have
both agreed to serve as advisors during FY 2016.
Last year, Henrico CASA staff took on a major
project and created a case study for new
volunteers in training, like Lynn Brust and Jack
Harsh (right). Based on a real life scenario, the
case is woven through the National CASA training
curriculum, yet gives volunteers the opportunity to
simulate working as an advocate. The curriculum
has received high praise from new volunteers and
other programs in the CASA network.
Henrico CASA received a very
special honor from the General
Assembly when a Joint
Resolution was passed to commemorate twenty years of serving
Henrico County’s children. Abbey
Philips (left), long-time Henrico
CASA volunteer and Legislative
Aide to Delegate Jennifer L.
McClellan (71st District), presented the resolution to Executive
Director, Barbara Herzog (far left),
at our special volunteer appreciation event in November 2014.
