THE SPIRIT OF PISSOTTE
Pissotte wines have been produced by the Coirier family since 1895. The family house
was built more than a hundred years ago, and the wisteria growing up the walls blooms
anew every spring. The river Vendée runs along the bottom of the 24-hectare family
vineyard, which overlooks the Mervent-Vouvant forest. The special soil of the area, a
mixture of clay and sand, confers on the Pissotte wines their characteristic delicate bouquet. In the cool of the winery, visitors receive a friendly welcome. Wine production in
Pissotte has been passed from father to son, the respect for tradition remaining while
the generations changed. The essential values of the family are still the same.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
It was thanks to Jean Coirier that the Domaine Coirier specialised in wine production. After the war, many local farmers preferred to grow cereals or to go into livestock farming.
Jean’s English friend, Robert James, went back to England after the war to work as a wine
merchant. He played a key role in the commercialisation of the Pissotte wines. Then two
of Jean’s seven children, Xavier and Philippe, took over the production of Pissotte. Later,
Xavier continued on his own, further building up the reputation of Pissotte wines.
Xavier’s eldest son, Mathieu, joined the business in 2002, and is now the sole proprietor.

THE VINES
The designation “AOC Fiefs Vendeens Pissotte” applies solely to wines produced
from the 24 hectares of the Domaine Coirier. The entire area has been under cultivation for nearly 40 years. We maintain a density of 6,000 vines per hectare, cultivated on espaliers Pruning the green shoots or disbudding is carried out every
year. The annual production of wine per hectare varies between 3,500 and 5,500
litres, depending on the grape variety. The vines are on average 20 years old.
Terra Vitis guarantees the production of quality wines using ecologically optimized
methods, the aim being to safeguard our viticultural heritage to be able to hand it
down to future generations.
“Terra Vitis, is the stamp of French vinegrower-winemakers who respect nature
and Man and who craft wines to please the taste buds.”
THE WINES
The rosé wines account for 50% of the total annual production, red wines 20 %
and white wines 30%. The white wines are made primarily from Chenin grapes,
blended with Chardonnay. The red wines are a blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, and 10% Negrette. For the rosé, the grape variety is
mainly Gamay. Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are also used in the rosé Apellation
d’Origine Controlée. One third of the production of the vineyard is Pinot Noir
grapes.

Average age of the vines: 25 years
Planting density vines/ha: 6,000
Soil: red schist (Precambrien)
Annual yield: 30 hl/ha
Chenin 90%, Chardonnay 10%
A special wine, reviving the hundred-year-old tradition of the Domaine, a tribute
to the succeeding generations who have cultivated the land. The name “La Petite
Groie” refers to the nature of the soil on which the vines are grown, “terres de
Groie”, found between the southern side of the house and the clay and silica
hills.
The grape varieties used for La Petite Groie are 90% Chenin and 10% Chardonnay, grown on the stoniest parts of the property (pebbles and gravel on red
schist). Production involves maceration with the skins for one night, taking the
first juice from a slow pressing, then12 months’ maturation in oak barrels (400 l)
from the Mervent Vouvant forest. The taste is full and strong.
Tasting notes
Shiny and soft in appearance with a glint of grey-gold. Discreet honeysuckle, kiwi
and mango bouquet ending in slightly smoky and toasty notes. Round, supple
and rich taste reminiscent of dried apricot and almonds. Brilliantly accompanies
large crustaceans, sea fish, mussels, white meat or hot goat cheese pastries.
Serve at 11-14°C. Can be stored for 4-6 years.

Mélusine Red
Designation: AOC FIEFS VENDEENS PISSOTTE
Number of bottles produced: 2,300
Vintage: 2011
Vines:
0.3 ha Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 years old
0.1 ha Cabernet Franc, 20 years old
0.3 ha Pinot Noir, 20 years old
Planting density vines/ha: 6,000
Soil: siliceous clay on schist
Annual yield: 40 hl/ha
50% Pinot Noir, 30% Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet franc.
Mélusine, the legendary fairy, half-woman, half-serpent, who is said to have
built the Vouvant tower in the heart of the Mervent forest, gives her name to
this blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes. As extraordinary as Mélusine herself, this unconventional wine is aged for 12 months
in 400-litre barrels made of oak from the Mervant-Vouvant forest.
Tasting notes
Deep red and dense in appearance. The bouquet is like freshly harvested grapes,
and is reminiscent of blackcurrant buds. Round, sophisticated taste with a delicate texture of wild blueberry and plum, a concentrated flavour with notes of
toast. Velvety tannins, slightly granular, melting and captivating. Goes best with
free-range poultry, roast meats and soft cheeses.
“Wonderful sensation of a slightly smoky, tarry flavour with accents of the forest
floor. Velvety at first, followed by a sweet caramel and resinous taste. Mélusine
bewitches us. This elegant bottle can wait a little. Let the fairy work on it.”
